DHS Adds Police and Cars to Fleet By DSW Staff Writer DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA – The city’s police department has undergone a major re-engineering in the last couple of years and currently is enjoying full staffing for the first time in many years. At the Sept. 4 city council meeting, two new officers as well as two new sergeants were sworn into the department. With the additional hires as well as officers on loan from Cathedral City, the agency can continue the important work of fighting crime and interacting with the community. According to most recent crime statistics, major crime continues to decrease in the city, with some categories down as much as 25

percent over past year. By a unanimous vote on Aug. 14, the city council voted to spend a total of $173,615.41

to purchase new vehicles for the police department. The new cars - five officer cars at $24,988.63 each and two detective cars at $24,336.13 each - were acquired through Wondries Fleet Group. The new 2011 Ford models will make trading out equipment far easier, according to DHS Chief of Police Kate Singer. “These cars are a major benefit and absolutely needed, especially in extreme weather. We have made major repairs to some of our units, only to have them fail to perform under stress. Our officers must have vehicles that they can depend on,” DHS Police Chief Singer said.

Tighter Seating on Airplanes

What’s more packed with people than a roller coaster car or a Universal-produced night of Halloween horror? An airplane’s coach cabin and, thanks to the folks at United Airlines, the ‘we’re all suffering together feeling,’ is about to become enhanced as they install slimmer airplane seats on some of their aircraft flying the ‘friendly skies’ next year. The reason: to squeeze in room for another row of up to six seats on each airplane. aptly-titled “Let the 7Horse Run” provides a wild and rewarding ride. Would somebody please book these guys at Coachella in 2013?

Artist: Maia Sharp Title: Change the Ending (Blix Street/Crooked Crown Records) You might be interested in this if you like: Vonda Shepard, Paula Cole, Lisa Loeb Tell me more: A gifted singer and songwriter, Maia Sharp chronicles love and relationships with the kind of honesty and authenticity that thrills with a single listen. There are plenty of wonderful arrangements and shining melodies across Sharp’s new album “Change the Ending.” From the jazzy “I See Cecelia” to the more directly emotionally-wrenching folk rock-styled “Me After You” and “The Middle,” there are tinges of pop, folk, jazz and rock all in the service of her material. For those who have heard Sharp’s songs recorded by the celebrated likes of Bonnie Raitt, the Dixie Chicks, Terri Clark, Keb’ Mo’ and Lisa Loeb, “Change the Ending” is the perfect way to experience Sharp’s special bond with her own songs.

Artist: Sonny Landreth Title: Elemental Journey (Landfall) You might be interested in this if you like: Eric Johnson, Eric Clapton, Joe Bonamassa, Joe Satriani Tell me more: Few guitarists can make their guitar sing like Sonny Landreth. On his first-ever all-instrumental album, “Elemental Journey,” the virtuoso slide player from Louisiana delivers a mix of melodic arrangements, breathtaking fret work and a winning team-minded approach to working with other greats in the service of the music. Among the guests that join him are fellow guitar legends Eric Johnson

and Joe Satriani, as well as members of the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra. “Heavy Heart” is a dark and emotive piece, while “Wonderide” races along in a bright mood, incorporating baroque and classical elements in a delightful hodgepodge. “For You and Forever” is simply amazing, with the artist bringing the sounds of the Delta region he calls home. As for his high-profile collaborations, “Passionola” finds Landreth’s slide work and the distinctive finger style approach of Johnson joined in an awe-inspiring union that thankfully never overshadows the composition. “Gala Tribe” features Satriani and Landreth rocking in tandem, as well as trading licks in their respective styles in a splendid cacophony of sound.

Business

Politics Is Huge Business, Money & Egos By Reno Fontana Politics is huge business. Politics is huge money. But more than anything, politics is huge egos. It takes a special person with a touch of narcissism to run for political office. After all, President Obama went to bed after winning his election four years ago knowing that 58 million people voted McCain-Palin because they didn’t like him. That would completely wreck the heads of most people. For a winning politician, having people criticize the fact that you even breath is part of the everyday price you pay to become a King or Queen. As far as the money needed for the 2012 national election, it’s expected the contests for the House, Senate and Office of the President will likely cost $6 to $7 billion. Read that again…6-7 BILLION dollars. Something about that just doesn’t seem quite right. Someone once said politicians are liberal

and conservative - liberal with your money and conservative with theirs. All joking aside, America is a business, and it takes strong business ideas to run this country successfully. On April 4, 2012, President Obama signed one of the most radical business reforms in 80 years designed to help small business owners succeed by allowing them to advertise directly to investors. What’s unbelievably is that it was barely mentioned by the national press. What the President did was make it legal for the first time since 1933 for companies to advertise their investment opportunities on TV, Radio, and on the Internet. Prior to an advertising campaign, however, the company must prepare a Private Placement Memorandum (PPM) and notice file with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) under rule 506 Regulation D. Upon signing the right to advertise provision of the Jobs Act, which was passed with bipartisan support in the Senate and the House of

Representatives, President Obama stated this is a “potential game changer”. And he is 10o percent spot on right. There was another provision created by signing this law into effect and it has to do with “crowd funding.” Mitt Romney recently said at the Republican National Convention that he would create 12 million jobs if elected President. Under the Jobs Act, an estimated two million new small companies will be created. If each company hires an average of four new employees, eight million real new jobs can be realized. This may seem somewhat simplistic on the surface, but a simple approach to a complex problem is not always a bad idea. Will Rogers once said, “Alexander Hamilton started the U.S. Treasury with nothing – and that was the closest our country has ever been to even.” That’s a very simple statement. Now, if only we could get that message across to our political President Obama signing the Jobs Act leaders.

One of my favorite inspirational “falling down and getting back up” stories involves a fellow I once knew back in my home state of Indiana. I won’t mention his name out of respect for his family’s privacy, but about 45 years ago, he was convicted of arson and ordered to serve five years in state prison. Having grown up in a well-to-do family and generally feeling entitled to the finer things in life, he decided to burn down the local tennis club one night in the belief the insurance company would rebuild a new shiny one. He was right. What he hadn’t counted on was being seen by a neighbor carrying a gas can with the building in flames behind him.

He had a family background in the commercial laundry and dry cleaning business, so while serving his sentence he revamped the Indiana prison laundry system and ultimately saved the state millions of dollars annually. And in amazing comeback fashion, he was given a pardon by the Governor for his exemplary performance in making his time in prison a positive situation. He was paroled early and lived an exemplary life thereafter. And for reasons known only to him, he gave up the game of tennis. There you see a glass half full. Don’t let the voice in your head ever convince you that the mistakes of your past should dictate the

Are You Ready for Retirement? Tips To Get on Track

When it comes to planning for retirement, there are many factors to consider. For instance, when is the ideal time to retire? How much should you save and contribute annually? How do you know which type of retirement investments will fit your needs, goals and risk tolerance? “Retirement today is, not surprisingly, being redefined for many people,” says Lule Demmissie, managing director of investment products and retirement at TD Ameritrade, Inc., a broker dealer subsidiary of TD Ameritrade Holding Corporation. In fact, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the average life expectancy is now 78 years. In addition, the Families and Work Institute reports that nearly 75 percent of people age 50 and older expect to work during retirement. “If you’re not prepared, you may find yourself having to work in some capacity to supplement your retirement savings. For some, this may not

be an available option due to health issues as they get older,” says Demmissie. “So taking careful consideration when planning for your financial future can help you retire when the time is right for you and your family.” With that in mind, Demmissie shares the following retirement planning tips:

Focus on the key areas

There are four areas that can directly impact your retirement plan - your budget, resources, investments and lifestyle: • Lifestyle - Consider factors such as where you live, what hobbies you will pursue, and whether or not you will continue to work in some capacity. • Budget - Make sure you have a clear understanding of your expenses during retirement, from medical needs to the cost of housing and inflation. • Resources - Determine where your money

will come from during retirement. • Investments - Develop a plan that will try to make your money last throughout your retirement.

Utilize online resources

In addition to focusing on the key areas, there are a number of free online resources that can help investors, including TD Ameritrade’s online retirement center, www.tdameritrade.com/retire. Understand the benefits of a Roth IRA versus a Traditional IRA It’s also important to keep in mind that retirement accounts can lead to tax benefits, such as: • Roth IRA - Affords the ability for tax-free growth and federal tax-free withdrawals (for those investors meeting IRS requirements, such as age). • Traditional IRA - The ability to deduct contributions on your income taxes now and pay

the taxes when you make qualified withdrawals in retirement. September Concert Marks 9/11 Anniversary PALM DESERT, CA -The September Concert, the Coachella Valley’s longest running annual 9/11 remembrance event, will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11 in the amphitheater at Palm Desert Civic Center Park. Presented by the Palm Desert Sister Cities Foundation, the free event is an occasion to come together to celebrate universal humanity through music. It also provides an opportunity

to honor the courage of those who gave their all on that tragic day as well as the dedication of all those who have served, suffered, and sacrificed in the years since. The 75 minute patriotic and tribute themed program has become the Coachella’s premier remembrance event, one of many similar events occurring throughout the United States and around the world on this date. The

September Concert programs debuted in 2002 on the first anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001. Organizers expect hundreds to attend the Palm Desert remembrance and encourage those who plan to come to bring water, chairs, blankets and a

candle. Civic Center Park is located at Fred Waring Drive and San Pablo Avenue. Event sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information visit www. palmdesertsistercities.com or call 760-333-4629.

Angel View Announces Community Outreach Program PALM SPRINGS, CA - A special news conference to learn about Angel View’s new community outreach program will be held Thursday, Sept. 6 at 11 a.m. in the back room of Melvyn’s Restaurant at 200 W. Ramon Road in Palm Springs. Angel View president Mel Haber, outreach program director Amanda Galindo, and director of development Catherine Rips will be on hand to explain the program and hand out information kits. There will be a Q and A following the presentation. The Angel View Resource and Referral Center assists local families who are looking for resources for their children with disabilities. And it offers more than just names and numbers. When possible, Angel View’s bilingual Outreach Specialist also helps families access needed services and follows-up when new solutions have been found, said LuAnn Lubell, Development Director of Angle View. All Coachella Valley families are eligible

to call for resources and referrals for disabled children age 18 and under. There is no charge for this service. All calls are confidential; the number is (855) 8AV-KIDS. Our Outreach Specialist has offices in Desert Hot Springs, Indio and Mecca; she is available to meet clients by appointment. Accessing healthcare services can be a challenge for families with disabled children. Transportation costs really add up. Through collaboration with the Independent Living Par tnership and the Transportation Reimbursement and Information Program (TRIP), Angel View Outreach helps local families with disabled children access needed healthcare services. Mileage reimbursement (55 cents per mile) is available to low and moderate income Coachella Valley families with verified medical needs for their children’s trips to health-related services. Eligible trips include appointments with doctors, dentists or therapists; picking up medical supplies or prescriptions, etc. Payments

are sent to the family each month based on mileage logs. The maximum number of miles per family per year is 1,250 (or a $687.50 benefit per year). Any licensed driver can provide the transportation -- a family member living in the home, a relative or friend. This program was designed to offer families the maximum flexibility in accessing health services for their children with disabilities. Families with disabled children often need medical equipment and supplies not covered by Medi-Cal or Inland Regional Center. Angel View Outreach helps meet families’ needs through special mini-grants. Eligible expenses include: medical treatments, medical and adaptive equipment, medical supplies, medication, dental treatments, therapy treatments and special nutrition supplements. Reimbursement is limited to $400.00 per family once a year. Funds are paid directly to equipment vendors or health care providers. Mini-grants can be combined with grants from Another Way, a non-profit affiliated with Inland Regional Center. “We assisted the adoptive parents of a child with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The child had also been diagnosed with cancer and needed frequent trips to Loma Linda. We were able to award the family mileage reimbursement for those medical miles. “We helped the single parent of a 12-year

old who needed a shower chair. And because the child’s wheelchair had been stolen, we arranged for her to receive a donated Convaid Stroller, a wonderful mobility device. “The single mom of an 11-year old with Cerebral Palsy called us for assistance. She was having difficulty paying for gas money to take her daughter to multiple doctors’ appointments. We were able to cover the cost of more than 1,000 medical miles. “A four-year old drug baby with developmental delays was frustrated by his inability to communicate. He was having difficulty saying words and couldn’t get people to understand his needs. We were able to provide his adoptive mother with beneficial resources, used a mini-grant to buy him an interactive Leap Frog reading system, and helped cover the cost of transportation to his speech therapy and behavioral therapy. “A local family needed adaptive (orthopedic) shoes for their toddler who suffers from a rare form of bone cancer which affects her mobility and motor skills. The shoes were recommended by her physical therapist but the family had been unable to pay for them. We’re also reimbursing them for mileage to Loma Linda, for the child’s dialysis appointments. Living Longer

Another Tibetan Ritual To Stop Aging (Part Four) By Art Kunkin (Mr. Life Extension) How would you like to have many surplus dollars in your bank account plus hundreds of healthy, happy years of life in which to enjoy your wealth? I present this question because I want my readers to know that there are new opportunities for health, prosperity and longevity available in the world today that didn’t even exist or weren’t widely known as few as ten years ago. Continuing this line of thought, I was very pleased to see in last week’s issue of this newspaper an introductory business column by Mr. Reno Fontana. I see this business column as a useful complement to this column because, while reading Mr. Fontana’s enthusiastic prose, I sensed his fundamental agreement with my goals of being very long-lived and prosperous. After all, there would be little point in living for hundreds of years if a person could only look forward to being poor and sick. So welcome aboard, Reno. I will read with great interest the information you offer for improving the financial life of all the Desert Star Weekly readers while, in the same issue, I will offer the possibility of great longevity. Now I return again to the group of Tibetan exercises (or rituals) called the Fountain Of Youth that I have been writing about in recent columns. For the benefit of new readers, “Ancient Secret of The Fountain of Youth”, the 1939 book containing these exercises, was an international publishing sensation, selling over two million copies throughout the world in the 1980s and 1990s Testimonials by readers included in the book relate that the daily practice of these exercises improves vision, darkens grey hair, relieves arthritis pain, results in weight loss and even improves memory. The book has been praised by such celebrities as actor Martin Sheen, Medical Doctor Bernie S. Siegel and author John

Gray. In the 1930’s author Peter Kelder met an aged British Army officer who had come to believe in the truth behind legends of a Tibetan monastery where aging could be reversed. This Colonel Bradford returned to India after his retirement, located the monastery and came back years later as a much younger and vigorous person. Bradford then established a “Himalaya Club” where he taught the first five rituals. The 6th Rite was only taught to selected older members of the Himalaya Club. The first, and in my opinion the most important of these exercises to practice daily, consists of a spinning said to improve the performance of the endocrine glands. In the Eastern esoteric tradition of higher consciousness development (previously secret but increasingly more available in the United States), there is a belief that the endocrine glands vital to life correspond to invisible “rotating energy vortexes” in the human body (termed “chakras” in Sanskrit). These chakras are said to slow down and deteriorate as a result of aging but can be brought back to optimum speed and health by rotating the entire body as well as specific muscle stretches done in exercises two through five. The instructions for the first exercise are to stand erect with arms outstretched, horizontal to the floor, right palm up and left palm down. Then, slowly spin around, men clockwise and women counter-clockwise, stopping if one gets dizzy but desirably rotating up to 21 times. While spinning, I recite a Longevity Mantra. “I can and I will add many, many years to my life because I am strong, conscious and have many, many goals to complete. My life is healthy, happy and prosperous.” My experience is that repeating this powerful chant three or four times, silently or voiced, is a way of defining the required 21 rotations. In my opinion, doing only this

first ritual is beneficial. Since I don’t have space to present all six rituals in this week’s space, I will move ahead here to ritual four. Those who have not saved my previous columns and want the complete instruction can come to the class (information below) or leave a phone message on my cell at 760-369-8921, preferably leaving an email address to which I can send the missed rituals. Colonel Bradford (a pseudonym) said when he first performed Rite 4 “It seemed very difficult but after a week it was as simple to do as any of the others.” “First sit down on the floor with your legs straight out and your feet about 12 inches apart. With the trunk of the body erect, place the palms of your hands on the floor alongside the buttocks. Then tuck the Art Kunkin chin forward against the chest. “Now, drop the head backward…at the same time raising your body so the knees Art Kunkin is the 84-year young bend while the arms remain straight. The journalist who founded the alternative trunk of the boy will be in a straight line wth weekly newspaper, the Los Angeles Free the upper legs, horizontal to the floor. And Press in 1964 and later became president both the arms and legs will be straight up of the Philosophical Research Society in Los and down, perpendicular to the floor. Then Angeles after the passing of PRS founder tense every muscle in the body. Finally, relax Manly Palmer Hall. A free download of a your muscles as you return to the original magazine cover story interview with Art sitting procedure, and rest before repeating about his research into stopping aging is the procedure….The results in one month now available at www.alchemyrevealed. were more than gratifying.” com. Why Do British Live Longer Than Americans? By Art Kunkin Tom Geoghegan, a journalist for the British Broadcasting System, has reported that Americans live fewer years than people in countries like Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and Japan. Men in the United States are on average aged 75 when they die. That is 1.5 years younger than men in the United Kingdom and 3.5 years younger than men in Australia and Japan, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle and Imperial College, London. The study is titled “Falling Behind: Life Expectancy In United States Counties From 2000 To 2007 In An International Context.” Published June 15, 2011. (http://www. pophealthmetrics.com/content/pdf/14787954-9-16.pdf ) American women live on average to just under 81 – about three years younger

than the average Australian woman. While life expectancy in the US continues to improve, it is not increasing as quickly as in other Western countries, so the gap is widening. The researchers suggest that the relatively low life expectancies in the United States cannot be explained by the size of the nation, racial diversity or economics. They rank the United States 38th in the world for life expectancy overall. They point to high rates of obesity, tobacco use and other preventable risk factors for an early death as the leading drivers of the gap between the United States and other nations. “We weren’t surprised that we had lower life expectancies than other countries, but we were surprised by the fact that we were falling further behind,” says Dr Ali Mokdad, professor of global health at the University of Washington. Smoking alone is responsible for one

out of every five deaths in the US, the professor says, yet the United States has not been as tough as Australia in restricting tobacco advertising and public smoking. Australia also has a greater focus on primary care – which helps with health education, and early treatment of any problems – and it has done a good job reducing the number of road traffic accidents, he adds. The US could also save 100,000 lives a year by reducing salt in people’s diets, since high blood pressure kills one in six people, Dr Mokdad says. When you look at life expectancy at 65 or 75, the United States performs rather well, says Svetlana Ukraintseva, senior investigator at the Center for Population Health and Aging (CPHA) at Duke University in North Carolina. Elderly Americans have a higher chance of surviving heart disease and many

cancers than their counterparts in other rich countries, she says. Where the United States lags behind is what happens at a much younger age. “It’s likely not the quality of medical care itself that is the problem but access to it. Medical insurance for all might help.” This is one goal of the healthcare reform signed into law in March 2010, which will oblige American adults to have health insurance when it comes into force in 2014. However, this remains a controversial idea in the US, and the legislation could yet come unstuck. Challenges to the constitutionality of the law are working their way through the courts, and fierce opponents in the Republican Party make no secret of their desire to repeal the legislation if the opportunity arises.

Body, Mind & Spirit

Bhakti Fest Featured Teacher – Mas Vidal By Ren Yogamaya, E- RYT 500 JOSHUA TREE, CA - The Origin of Mas: When asked about his cultural heritage, Mas Vidal replied, “I have Cuban blood, an American heart and an Indian soul.” He began his yogic journey while in Chicago and later when he arrived in Los Angeles, after a short time spent in the investment-banking world, he turned his love of spirituality and yoga into a full time commitment, thanks in part to the teachings of Yogi Pramahansa Yogananda and Ayruvedic master, David Frawley. Today, Vidal follows the principles of Ananda, Yogananda and has dedicated DSYA and the website to Yogananda’s teachings with his mission being lifestyle through Ayruveda lifestyle program. Vidal is the founder and director of Dancing Shiva Yoga and Ayruveda (DSYA). In Los Angeles, the original center dedicated to the practice, education and lifestyle of the great Vedic sciences of Yoga and Ayruveda. Since opening in 2001, the center has been committed to teaching an integral form of yoga that combines the classical system of Patanjali, integrated with Ayruveda’s science of Tri-Dosha (the traditional principle three element characteristics found in individuals). Under Vidal’s direction, DSYA has been recognized internationally for developing a strong balance between the mind-body relationship and the principles emphasized

in both Yoga and Ayruveda. Vidal strongly encourages education in a practical sense and as a way of life in his dynamic yoga classes. The DSYA center is aligned with various notable institutions of health and wellness, spirituality and higher learning throughout the United States, Europe and India and maintains interaction in the areas of consulting, research and providing educational materials. In addition, Vidal and DSYA are members, registered and certified by the NAMA (National Ayruvedic Medical Association), AAPNA (Association of Ayruvedic Professionals of North America), YA (Yoga Alliance) and IAYT (International Association of Yoga Therapists). Presently DSYA offers a staff of twelve: Seven yoga teachers and five Ayruvedic professionals and including Yoga Therapist, David Frawley. The yoga classes range from Hatha Yoga Level 1 to Raja Yoga and Raja Vinyasa Yoga, Level 2-3 taught by Vidal and yours truly, Ren Yogamaya. As an Ayruvedic Practitioner: Vidal maintains an active clinical practice at Dancing Shiva and at other affiliated centers throughout the United States. Over the years, he has seen all types of patients for various reasons, disorders and general lifestyle counseling. His consultations place a strong emphasis on identifying the emotional causes of imbalance to the doshas and developing practical lifestyle guidelines

Mas Vidal to enable the individual to restore balance and perfect health. The clinic at Dancing Shiva follows and Integrative Medicine approach with specialized healing programs for every individual. In each consultation recommendations will include simple lifestyle suggestions related to diet, herbs, exercise and therapies or other modalities that may be beneficial to specific issues. Teaching at Bhakti Fest: At this year’s Bhakti Festival in Joshua Tree, Vidal will be teaching two classes on Thursday and

Friday: Shiva and Shakti – The Dancer and The Romancer and The Lover and The Rishi. This year’s classes will be more tantric-based and with more movement; dance, mudra and mantras integrated and internalized. Vidal’s base teaching style offers the traditional practice of Integral Hatha Yoga and incorporates the higher wisdom of Raja Yoga principles. For the aspiring yoga student or yoga teacher, his classes are not to be missed: On the most important issue in yoga today: When asked what he felt was the most important issue now he replied, “Yoga, Sadhana (spiritual practice towards an intended goal) is not therapy. It should be Brahmacharya – (A restraint or form of chastity). We need to teach people how to live – with better self-care, discipline through yoga, more of a Yogic-Ayruvedic lifestyle. Through the language of Ayruveda, yoga teachers should learn and know the causes of disorders, not symptoms of disorders. Secondly, we need to emphasis the individual person and traditional yoga does emphasis this. Within individuality is taking responsibility. Yoga and yoga teachers today – no one will ever succeed as an asana teacher unless they learn these two principles. “Dogma is a lifestyle. Practice yoga, live Aryuveda and let the divine take care of the rest.” The journey begins with this process.

Dining Out

AZUL Tapas-Inspired Lounge and Patio Serves up Live Entertainment with Delicious Food

Sunshine Cafe

By Jackie Devereaux PALM SPRINGS, CA – If you’re looking for a place that has live entertainment and delicious food, look no further than Azul’s Tapas Inspired Lounge and Patio located in the heart of downtown Palm Springs. I had the pleasure of dining here last Wednesday night, and had a surprisingly good time listening to the comic singing ruminations of their mid-week piano player, Rudy de la Mor. While I sipped my Mango Lemon Martini, I read over the Happy Hour menu which offers drinks from 3 to 8 p.m. at affordable prices of $3 to $8 each. Your selection of Happy Hour drinks includes martinis, margaritas, mojitos along with classic beers and wines. The Happy Hour menu offers food tastings for $3 to $8 such as Chips and Salsa or Hummus and Chips for $3; Five Wings with Homemade Potato Chips and Ranch Dressing, or Fried Calamari, Fried Zucchini Sticks or Fried Green Beans each for $5.. On the $7 menu are treats such as Spinach with Artichoke Dip and Chips, two Sliders or for the more adventurous try their Waffle Fry Nachos topped with Pulled Pork, jalapenos, black olives, sour cream, cheddar and mozzarella cheeses. Azul’s is famous for their Flatbreads($7) served with your choice of a variety of items. You’ll f i n d Tu n a Bruschetta, Lobster Spring Rolls, Shrimp Cocktail and Skewered Shrimp with pineapple, mushroom and tomato for $8. Check out their Sunday Brunch menu served from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with traditional Eggs Benedict ($10.25) and more exotic versions of Crab Benedict ($14.25) and Lobster Benedict ($15.00) as well as Filet Mignon Steak and Eggs Benedict ($18.75) served with sautéed Spinach, Roasted Potatoes and Lemon scented Hollandaise Sauce. Make Your Own Omelet ($10.50) with everything from Chopped Maine Lobster to Shrimp or Crab ($2 additional for each seafood item) and all the traditional fixings for $1 each additional item. However, let’s get back to the dinner. Shortly after arriving my husband, Tom, and I were met by Azul’s General Manager Tim Barton who recommended their Duet of Scallops from Drag Queen at Azul’s

the Tapas menus ($8.75). We took Barton up on his suggestion. The scallops were seared to perfection and served with a vanilla sauce that is to die for. My husband and I love scallops and order them whenever we get a chance, and we’ve tasted a lot of exotic recipes over the years. All were terrific, but Azul’s Vanilla Butter Sauce made this scallop recipe out-of-this-world delicious. My husband wanted to split their Fried Calamari tapas($11.50) along with the scallops tapas, and we split a delightful House Salad ($9.50) made of baby greens tossed with blue cheese, sour apples, walnuts and Azul’s yummy house dressing. For our entrees we ordered the Trio of Ahi Tuna ($17.95) and the mid-week Daily Special called Surf and Turf ($19.95) which is a six ounce thinly cut Filet Mignon with Shrimp and Garlic Mashed Potatoes. We split both entrees. The Trio of Ahi consisted of a black and white sashimi dish, tuna noodle salad and an Ahi tartare served with pickled ginger, wasabi and Ponzu sauce. All three were absolutely fabulous. Whatever night you go to Azul’s you’ll find some form of live entertainment. If you’re entertaining friends or just want a few hearty, belly-laughs, go to Azul’s for their drag queens, burlesque-style stage shows and of course, the musical stylings of Rudy de la Mor. And please go with an open mind because if you sit near the piano bar or close to the stage, you’ll to be joked about or roasted by the entertainers. Azul’s Tapas Inspired Lounge and Patio is located at 369 N. Palm Canyon Rd. Call 760-325-5533 or go to www.azultapaslounge.com for more information and a schedule of entertainers.

Artist Cid Newsome Paints Coachella Valley Cities Rock and Roll Music Merges with Fine Art By Jackie Devereaux Cathedral City, CA – It’s another “Tequila Sunrise” for artist Cid Newsome. She’s a person who gets inspired by her favorite rock and roll songs to paint local downtown scenes matching the name. “My favorite bands are the Beatles and the Eagles so songs like ‘Hotel California’ and ‘Long and Winding Road’ became subjects for my art,” Newsome said during a recent telephone interview. Newsome has been listening to music and painting scenes from around the Coachella Valley since 1999. Her work has been exhibited in numerous restaurants such as Trios, Wang’s of the Desert and the Old Town Coffee Shop in La Quinta, as well as public buildings like City Hall in Cathedral City. Newsome, 58, was born in Urbana, Illinois but like many children of her era, was raised as a military brat traveling to foreign lands and attending more schools than she

“California Dreaming” Newsome learned a lot from her father who now lives in Ecuador with her mother selling art portraying villages and sites in that region of the world. “When I was five or six years old, I would draw with my dad. He influenced my art and encouraged me in many ways,” she said. Newsome specializes in painting but is not limited to that medium. Early in her career she created stained-glass works, made jewelry and pottery until finally settling down to watercolor and oil painting as her main form of expression. After Newsome moved to Cathedral City, her parents decided to join her in 2003, and it was all one big happy family living under the same roof. This is when she and her father began to paint iconic scenes of the Coachella Valley. “We noticed no one was doing it, so we

can recall. Her father, Larry Higgins, was in the Navy but his professional career was as an architect. She recalled a pivotal moment in their family’s life when she was bitten by ants while in the jungles of Saipan and military doctors told her father that she couldn’t live there anymore. The family was transferred first to Hawaii, then to Bellevue, Washington where she graduated from high school, got married then later moved back to Hawaii where she lived for 16 years before relocating to the Desert in 1999.

“Night Cactus Flower” started our series. We would both paint the same scene back to back of each city,” she said, until her father returned to Hawaii in 2009 after the economy tanked. Newsome’s paintings of public places from Palms Springs to Indio and from the mountains to the desert rim still adorn the walls at City Hall, as well as the IncredibleArtist.com gallery and numerous local art savvy restaurants like Cello’s Bistro in Cathedral City. “Anyone can paint a desert scene but not a building. Because I’m architecturallytrained, I can do it.” Newsome likes Old Town La Quinta Park and painted scenes of it while sipping coffee at the Old Town Coffee Shop. “There is this funky little hotel across from the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs that, I think, was the original Hotel California from the Eagles’ song. I started doing my local scenic paintings to rock and roll songs from there,” she said. “I was listening to an Earth, Wind and Fire CD while driving into Palm Springs when the windmills came into view. It

Other paintings have names such as “California Dreaming,” “Moonshadow” and “Peaceful Easy Feeling.” Newsome’s art first got noticed locally while at the IncredibleArtist.com gallery because of her beautiful renditions of many familiar public places. Rick Pantele’s gallery

“Twitter” (now online as IncredibleArtist.com) put her art on the map. “He helped me tremendously, and helped me get noticed by important people. They saw my work at his gallery and said, ‘Oh, we want your art at city hall.” Newsome exhibited five of her local iconic scenes there until the city finally purchased one for $650. It still hangs at city hall today. To date she’s sold approximately 20 prints with prices ranging from $75 to $750 each. “Art has always been a part of my life, in many forms. I love fine art, as well as painting murals. Another passion is rescuing animals. All through the years I have painted with my favorite medium being watercolor. I love the difficulty of it and the interaction and transparency of the paint as it blends with the paper.

“I also love to teach art and have enjoyed this new challenge, as well as pushing myself with painting styles and subjects.” Cid Newsome

Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt Star in ‘Salmon Fishing in the Yemen’ and ‘Hysteria’- A VictorianRomp By Theda Kleinhans Reichman While the title “Salmon Fishing n the Yemen” is a clue to what the film is about, it really doesn’t give you an insight into how charming this little fable actually is. As the title suggest, the story deals with bringing salmon and plenty of water into the desert domain of a Middle Eastern Sheikh (Amr Waked). As told by Lasse Hallstrom, the beloved director of “Chocolat” and the Oscar winning screenwriter of “Slumdog Millionaire,” this playful romantic comedy is smart, funny and full of twists, turns and

some foreign intrigue. Emily Blunt, the Sheikh’s representative on this seemingly impossible project, comes to England to seek the involvement of Britain’s leading fisheries expert (Ewan McGregor). He thinks the whole idea is not only totally ridiculous, but totally impossible as well and he flatly refuses the lovely Ms. Blunt. However the British Prime Minister’s overzealous press secretary (Kristen Scott Thomas) sees this project as a way of promoting good-will in the region for Great Britain. She steps into the negotiations and

insists that McGregor is brought in on the project whether he likes it or not. Despite his belief that there is no way in the world to bring water and salmon into the Yemen, no matter how much money the Sheikh is willing to spend, he finds himself charmed by this pleasant visionary and smitten with Ms. Blunt. But there are hitches in everything, from how to get water, then salmon, into the region and how to bring these two co-workers together since she has a boyfriend who has been deployed to Afghanistan and McGregor is married to a rather distant woman who spends more time at her job than with him. McGegor is shy, yet very bright and Emily Blunt can melt any heart as she does with her boyfriend and McGrgor. What also works well is the actual reasoning behind the Sheik’s desire to bring a giant lake filled with salmon into the arid region. Critics have dubbed the film “wonderful, enchanting, inspiring and very moving” and each adjective of praise is accurate. At first we, like McGregor, thinks the idea is insane, but the Sheikh’s faith in making the impossible possible is contagious. Sony Pictures, rated PG-13. “Hysteria” arrives on DVD and Bluray on Sept. 18, starring Hugh Dancy (“Adam”, “The Jane Austen Book Club’). Ac a d e my Aw ard nom i ne e Mag g i e Gyllenhaal (Best Supporting Actress in “Crazy Heart” 2009) and Rupert Everett (“My Best Friend’s Wedding”). The film, a lighthearted romantic comedy, tells the surprising story of the birth of the electro-

mechanical vibrator at the very peak of Victorian prudishness. The Blue-ray and DVD include deleted scenes, commentary with director Tanya Wexler, a Q & A with Wexler, Hugh Dancy and Jonathan Pryce, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the making of “Hysteria.” The plot deals with how doctors in London, in the Victorian era, treated cases of hysteria characterized at the time by a woman’s irritability, anger or unexplained tears. Their solution was a new electrical device. The film has a running time of 95 minutes and is rated R for sexual content.

‘The Midnight Curse‘-A Ghostly Tale for Ages 9 to 12 By Theda Kleinhans Reichman Author L.M. Falcone has been a teacher, a private investigator and a screenwriter as well as a writer of fiction. Her previous young adult novels include: “The Mysterious Mummer,” “Walking with the Dead” and “The Devil, the Banshee and Me.” Her latest ghostly tale, “The Midnight Curse,” published by Kids Can Press, just won the 2012 Diamond Willow Award which is voted on by kids. As Ms. Falcone told me recently, “Kids love spooky stories and I try to deliver.” In her latest book, “The Midnight Curse,” 11-year-old Charlie and his twin sister, Lacey head to England for the reading of their great-uncle Jonathan’s will. For the twins and their mom, things have been really tough following the death of their dad so they are elated at the prospect of a new life. They will inherit all of Uncle Jonathan’s worldly goods which include a fantastic

manor house as well as a couple of ghosts, an eccentric spell-casting neighbor, a tragedy from the long-forgotten past and, worst of all, a deadly family curse that is bestowed on male members of the family. In this case, the curse lands on poor Charlie. Things go really wrong almost from the start. Soon after their arrival at the manor house for the reading of the will, mom disappears and two young ghosts make their presence known. There is drama, intrigue, ghosts and a curse on poor Charlie, but the reader gets pulled into the mystery a little bit at a time so it is not overwhelming, except for Charlie and Lacey of course. And while Charlie may be doomed to sleep in water from midnight to dawn every night of his life there might be a way to reverse the curse. The twins are aided in their search for a solution by a young ghost named Daniel who helps them discover clues to the mystery. Daniel also tells them what brought on this curse in the first place. Just when things look like they will

work out, new obstacles get in the way. And when the reader thinks things couldn’t get worse, they do. But the suspense is coupled with large doses of humor as well. In “Booklist-- Chicago” the reviewer described the book as “amazingly fast-paced and amusing to boot….there’s dialogue propelled with plenty of eerie action on every page. Readers will appreciate how quickly this moves while enjoying every moan and groan.” What is fun for young chapter book readers is the fact that just when they, and the twins, think the problem is solved, something goes wrong. Lacey seems to handle it better than Charlie, but as he tells her “It’s me whose cursed--not you.” Even though the twins have their differences-she is taller and thinner, he is shorter and

a bit on the pudgy side and Lacey is more calm in a crisis-- they work together when the going gets tough. Even though they often squabble over little things, Charlie soon discovers that he has a fierce ally in his feisty twin sister. JK Panama (Age 12) Florida, USA gave the book thumbs up. In her review she said, “I could not have read a better book! L.M. Falcone writes about mystery, terror, and going to the extreme to help your family. I was up all night, both because I was scared and because I couldn’t rest until I finished the book! If you dream of horror, love Edger Allen Poe works and other strange books, you’ll love “The Midnight Curse.” I know I did.” Parents and young readers can visit the author’s website at: www.LMfalcone.com.

Astrological Affects

Body, Mind & Spirit

By Guru Ren Yogamaya, M.A. E-RYT 500

Week of Sept. 6 -12 Sun In Virgo Most Affected is Virgo. The month is now in the sign of Virgo, for Vedic, Leo. For Virgo: All Mercurial themes such as light, electrical impulses, mental agility, communication, comfort with sound and silence and attention to details and wealth will rule supreme until Sept. 22. A more heightened awareness of the written and spoken word, health and the health industry. The best side of Virgo is seen in their gracious manner and their well thought-out strategies as solutions to problems. The key is to know when to behave with confidence, when to let go to allow the child within your heart to have a say and, to leave justice in the hands of the Universe. For All Signs: Celebrate this month with respect and action towards the earth beneath you, the earth within you; experience the stealthy strength of Earth poses found in Yoga. Best Sacred Geometry: Hexahedron (Earth). Best Yantra: The color Gold.

Affects of the Full “Blue Moon” In Pisces Most affected are Pisces and All Water Signs. The Full Moon occurred on Aug. 31. For Pisces: The Full Moon on Aug. 31 was in your sign and it highlighted a personal concern. You may have received news that brought insight to this issue. If you have not taken action, it may be best to bring things to completion. Otherwise, if you don’t have all the necessary info, find out as soon as you can. For All Signs: The “blue moon” can also refer to the connection of Pisces found in the 6th and 7th Chakras. The color for the 6th Chakra is Indigo Blue. The highlight of this Full Moon was the rebalancing of Ida and Pingala; the divine feminine and the masculine energies found in the left and right brain of everyone. The Worst: There were rough planetary affects that made this 24-hour period challenging. Self-criticism may have brought about selfdoubt. Emotions may have over-run while the Pisces moon’s ethereal, anti-materialism tempted many to turn away from reality. The Best: The Sun-Moon opposition at that time assisted us from going too far and may have prompted the thought of seeking out the necessary resources to turn your dream into a reality. In your meditations, ask the Universe for guidance, connection and maternal support in assisting you in finding strength to release and to let go of people, places or things that are no longer serving you well in your Life. Best Mantra: AUM. Best Color: Indigo Blue or White.

Sept. 6 – Venus Into Leo Most affected are Leo and all Fire signs (including Libra and Taurus as the planet Venus is their ruling sign). This transit will continue until Oct. 3. For Leo: The planet of Love and beauty is in your sign; you may now enjoy your new popularity and the good possibility of romantic interests.

Desert Star Weekly

If you are already involved, this can be a very romantic or creative time for you, one of the best times of the year for your love Life. However, when Venus is in any sign of the Zodiac, the senses are heightened as well. Watch that you don’t over-indulge in food, drink or stay at the party too long. Exercise and refresh yourself: Bask in the remaining summer sunlight on the Earth rather than just at the pool or ocean. The signs of Libra and Taurus may figure more prominently. For Taurus: The upside is firey passions, cozy times can take place more in your home. The possible downside is that there could be unnecessary drama by you or the other requesting more attention. Ask for what you need, focus on mutual agreement and move on. For Libra: Your confidence may be heightened and you may find yourself onstage. There is also the possibility of romance with one regarded as a friend. Lengthy conversations may spark this into happening. Before you embark on this adventure, be sure that your health, their health are a good match. For All Signs: Relationships may perk up due to the generous nature of the current Venus in Leo energy. Don’t allow drama to lead you to dinner, bed or miss-adventures. Have consideration of others and channel energies into a productive outcome. Bhakti, devotion begins when there is a generous, self-less heart.

Unfortunately, this constant strain on body and mind can lead to serious health consequences. On-Going Astrological Affects: Mercury In Virgo Most Affected are Gemini and Virgo. This transit began on Aug. 31 and will continue until Sept. 16. For Virgo: Your own planet of communications and electrical impulses enters your sign, you may feel a surge of energy moving easily, supporting your communications, travel and gadgetry. Your thoughts and words may have a touch of fresh brilliance; you’re on a roll. Signs of Gemini or other Virgos may figure more prominently. For Gemini: You mind is already precise; during this transit, it is even more meticulous and your words may be fabulous. Refrain from letting it go to your self-ego. Instead, channel it into fun creativity to help or heal others. For All Signs: The journey may be more rewarding if we can believe first, see the difference between materialism and spiritual fulfillment. Some materialism is necessary and when it is not, turn inward to find your own fulfillment. Orderly, detailed thinking when not necessary can clog you from natural flow. Allow the thoughts to come and to go like clouds. A spa treatment with hot rocks

In 2004, Spa Week recognized the epidemic of stress-related health issues and set out to change the dangerous course the country had charted. The first step was making it possible for everyone to experience the healing benefits of spa and wellness services, thus the biannual Spa Week Events and their affordable $50 treatments were created. Since then, Spa Week has implemented many other groundbreaking programs devoted to educating consumers about the preventative and life-long wellness benefits of spa visits. Moving into its 17th installation, Spa Week’s Fall 2012 Event will take place from October 15th – 21st when hundreds of spas (day, medical and resort), yoga and Pilates studios, fitness and nutrition centers, and other health and wellness practices nationwide will offer up to three signature treatments at the major discount of just $50 each. Spas and wellness facilities have become invested in improving overall health and well-being for consumers, rather than serving as only a brief escape from their hectic lifestyle. In alignment with this commitment to enrich consumer’s lives, the Fall 2012 Event will offer a wide variety of services that address the most vital health concerns including stress and pain management, weight loss and maintenance, mind-body balance and total fitness. Such services will incorporate holistic and alternative therapies such as traditional, ancient medicine like acupuncture and cupping to

spa-goers should register on SpaWeek.com as early as possible. The complete directory will launch five weeks early, on September 10th, to allow consumers to begin booking their most desired services. It is recommended that spagoers sign up and book in advance on SpaWeek. com to ensure they reserve their top treatment choices. Spa visits improve overall health in many ways, from the physical to psychological, but perhaps the most important is that they provide the tools for long-term prevention. Investing in personal health and well-being now decreases the chance of battling stress-related illness in the future. As more consumers turn to spas and wellness facilities to aid in their physical and mental health goals, Spa Week is there and will continue in its tradition of assisting millions in their journey of living a life of greater health, happiness and well-being. Spa Week was created and founded by Cheryl Reid, who hails from successful careers within the luxury spa industry and publishing spheres. Joining Spa Week for the Fall 2012 Event, sponsors include Exclusive National Media Sponsor: Health magazine; Exclusive Destination Sponsor: Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism; Exclusive Trade Association Partner: ISPA; Exclusive Skincare Sponsor: American Laser Skincare and Exclusive Hair Care Sponsor: Ouidad. Co-sponsors include CEW and Spa Chicks On The Go®. Spa Week donates a portion of the proceeds from the Spring and Fall Events to CancerAndCareers.org.

Safety Awareness

Back To School-Safety and Bullying By Charles Bennet, Jr.

Here we are again at that time of year; the summer is over and school is back in session. For kids, the time went by too fast and for some parents, the time didn’t go by fast enough! For some, going back to school is exciting and normal. For others it is not so exciting and for first timers it can be very scary. Whichever applies to your child, it is very important to stay involved in their school experience, for both your benefit and theirs. Many of the problems that face students go unresolved or get worse due to lack of parental involvement. Keeping an open line of communication with school staff and students is imperative. Sean Webb, Assistant Principal at La Quinta High School said that one of the biggest problems nationwide that schools are having is a lack of parental involvement. Additionally, Webb said that even though a student is doing well in school, i.e. good grades, it is important to recognize if there are any changes in a student. For example, if a student is losing weight, has the appearance of being tired frequently or change in clothing and/or hairstyle, there is the possibility that there could be something going on in that students life that has not been made aware of to their parents or school staff. If as a parent, one recognizes such changes in behavior and any attempt to communicate with that student fails, it is highly suggested that it be brought to the attention of the appropriate school staff in an effort to further monitor that student. Additionally, school staff may be able to better communicate and assist that student if in fact there is a problem. Even if the parent is successful in communicating with their child and a problem exists, it is highly recommended that school staff be advised of the problem so that they can monitor and take the appropriate measures in order to help that student. Keep in mind, the safety of all students is the top priority of all schools. Another issue that Webb addressed was the use of social media websites and how they have contributed to an increase in cyber bullying. Webb said that the school still sees bullying in the traditional format as we remember; calling names and fighting, however, what is happening now is

that the incident usually starts at school and later explodes on social media sites. Webb used the example of a popular girl who doesn’t like another girl then posts a derogatory comment on Facebook

or Twitter . Within seconds, 50-100 or more other students are seeing it. Webb strongly urges parents to monitor their children’s social media activities; not just for bullying but in order to detect any other inappropriate behavior such as issues that relate to drugs and sexually explicit content. Surprisingly and unfortunately, Webb said that “sexting” is more common among middle school students! Does this open anyone’s eyes? Jeff Kaye, Director of Security and Safety Services for the Desert Sands Unified School District has implemented an extensive Emergency Operations Plan district wide. The district is equipped to handle virtually any type of emergency through the use of an impressive command center that is linked with all local emergency services. In the event of an incident, all parents will be notified via mass notification. Kaye advises parents that in the event of an incident, do not come to the school until advised to do so as, depending on the incident, students will not be released. If not instructed to do so, parents who arrive will only add to the problem and in many cases will be turned away by first responders. It is understandable to be worried, however,

no matter how difficult it is, let the authorities do their job. This is also the general policy of schools nationwide. The students safety is their first priority. A startling piece of information that Kaye provided was that in his casual conversations with middle school kids, they have told him that drugs are easier to come by than alcohol. Here again parents, get involved! With regards to our younger students, Maryalice Owings, principle of Lyndon B. Johnson Elementary School in Indio stresses that parents have patience as this may be the child’s first separation. Owings said that parents need to give their children time to adjust to their classrooms and routine and recommends having a routine at home to help them adjust i.e. have a place for their backpack, have their clothes out and their lunch made the night before. The purpose behind this is to reinforce having a routine which in turn relieves anxiety. Another important issue that Owings presented is that some children may have had an unfortunate separation from a parent or loved one prior to coming school from summer break such as a death or parent who goes to jail. It is

essential that the child is made aware that the parent or guardian who is caring for the child is coming back for them when school is over. This kind of a loss can have a tremendous effect on a child and Owings strongly advises that parents let the school staff know so that they can better assist the child. Owings further advises that if a child has been bullied, report it immediately. Additionally, instruct children to report the incident to school staff as soon as it occurs. By doing so will allow the school to address the issue right away so that corrective action can be taken before it progresses. We as parents need to be thoroughly involved in our children’s educational experiences. It is also very important to know the school’s emergency procedures and other policies. In addition, all of the contributors advise that there are anti-bullying polices in place and that there will be zero tolerance for it. Keep in mind parents are legally responsible for the actions of their children, both criminally and civilly. In an effort to involve middle school concerns, John Glen and Indio middle schools were consulted however; neither chose to participate. Pets

Not All Pet Food Is Created Equal Nationwide, USA - One of the most important decisions you will make for your pet is the type of food they eat. Though generic, run-of-the-mill pet food may be cheap and easily available, there are certain pet foods that are a cut above, which can provide important benefits to the health of the pet. But finding the most nutritious food at a good value can be a daunting task.

Understanding AAFCO Regulations

nutritional levels set by AAFCO, or whether the nutritional adequacy is established through actual pet feeding trials,” said Dr. Carla Case-McCorvey, of Case Veterinary Hospital. “Most pet food companies don’t make the investment required to perform these trials, even though it assures that the pets are actually able to digest and receive the required nutrients,” she said. Dr. CaseMcCorvey recommends looking for a label that says: “Animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate” that the pet food “provides complete and balanced nutrition” for the specific life stage of your pet, rather than “all life stages.”

The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) develops model state regulations for animal feed, including pet food, with the main goal of ensuring the consumer protection and health of both animals and humans. However, consumer confusion over what they see on pet food The Benefits of Feeding Trials labels can make it difficult to choose the right Case-McCor vey said that some food. companies cite concern for test animals as “One mark of quality you should look for a reason for not performing feeding trials. is whether the food is only formulated to meet “However,” she adds, “some companies that

do conduct feeding trials have opened up these facilities for tours by veterinarians. I have personally been on a tour of Hill’s (maker of Science Diet and Prescription Diet) world class research facility in Topeka, Kansas,” she said, “and was deeply impressed by the gentle, loving nature of the staff who care for these dogs and cats as well as their sincere commitment to develop products to give pets healthier and happier lives and longer relationships with their human families. The animals at Hill’s are cared for in beautiful, clean buildings where they receive excellent veterinary care. They live normal lives and are never used for any other purpose but to monitor their health while being fed regimented pet food.” Checking the pet food label for the method used to establish nutritional adequacy, as well as investigating the companies that make the food, will give you peace of mind that the food you are feeding your pet on a

Healthy Cat is a Happy Cat A new kitten can make the “purr”fect addition to your family and provide companionship for years to come. Regardless of whether you’ve just adopted a kitten for the first time or are a seasoned pet parent, there are plenty of tasks to consider when it comes to cat care. To avoid becoming overwhelmed, follow these tips to ensure your cat is happy and healthy.

Satisfy the pickiest eaters

Cats are known to be picky eaters, but that doesn’t mean you can’t choose a healthy food option. Look for products with quality ingredients that will provide the nutrients your cat needs for its specific age. Kittens will need plenty of vitamins and minerals to support growth, while older cats may need something that aids in weight control, energy and bone support. Your veterinarian can help you choose healthy food that will satisfy even the pickiest cats.

Choose natural litters

A natural cat litter can help limit the amount of chemicals your cat is exposed to and help bring the freshness of the outdoors, indoors. One option is Feline Pine® Clumping Cat Litter, which has no perfumes, additives or harsh chemicals. It is made from highly absorbent pine, which acts as a natural sponge to quickly and efficiently absorb moisture and eliminate odor naturally.

Stay on schedule

Too many cat naps can add extra pounds to your kitty’s waistline. To ensure your cat maintains a healthy weight, stay on schedule when it comes to feedings. For households with several pet parents, make sure everyone is aware of when and who will feed the cat, especially during busy weeks. Also, be sure to incorporate play time into your cat’s day. It’s not only fun, but also a great work out!

“Where’s the Beef?”

Cats are naturally curious and have a knack for getting into trouble; therefore, creating a safe home environment is important, especially if you have a kitten. Cats love to explore and can jump to great heights so be sure to protect all nine lives by keeping harmful items - poisonous plants, medications, or toxic substances in a closed space that can’t be accessed by your cat. Remove any breakable items that could fall on them, and mount any artwork that could potentially get knocked over.

Get home safelySometimes, curiosity will get the best of well-behaved cats and cause them to wander from home. To ensure a happy homecoming, take extra precautions by putting an ID tag on your cat’s collar with your phone number. Also, make sure you have several images of your cat in case it goes missing and you need to spread the word to ensure their save return. Popular Chicken Chewies Blamed for 900 Dog Deaths Nationwide, USA – Alarmed pet owners across the nation owners are complaining that their dogs were sickened or died after eating popular brands of chicken jerky dog treats that were produced in China. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received more than 900 complaints since January 2012 and issued a number of warnings about the pet food products throughout the past four years.

Concerned pet owners claim their dogs began vomiting after eating the chicken chewies and some dogs experienced kidney failure resulting in death. The growing number of complaints are targeted at three brands of chicken chewies, all made in factories in China: Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch, made by Nestle Purina, and Milo’s Kitchen Home-style Dog Treats, made by Del Monte. Pet owners have launched a nationwide campaign to recall the pet treat products on Facebook. However, the manufacturers have denied any link between their products and the dogs’ illness.
