DHS Cops Celebrate Birthday 15 Years of Service to the Community By Steve Sobotta

DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA – July 1, 2012 marked the 15th anniversary of the re-establishment of the Desert Hot Springs Police Department. With tremendous support from the public, under direction of then Mayor Gerald Pisha and the City Council in January, 1997, City Manager Bob Wilburn was successful in pulling together staff resources and various grant assistance, particularly those secured from the US Department of Justice, to fund the reforming of the department. There was much fanfare and celebrations when the department came on-line on July 1, 1997 with James Mathews from Temecula selected as Police Chief heading-up a relatively small department of 23 full time officers, many of which came from the City of Hawaiian Gardens that had recently decided to contract police protective services with the LA County Sheriff ’s Department. Staff included eight reserve officers, six dispatchers, one records clerk, one communications technician and an operating budget of $2.3 million. Most of the patrol cars that were secured were used vehicles with a significant number being driven down from the City of Fresno PD and the Fresno County Sheriff ’s Department and stored in the city hall’s rear parking lot until being re-stenciled with City of Desert Hot Springs markings. Accompanying this effort by the City, the DHS chapter of the Police Activities League (“PAL”), a youth activities and sports organization, was also formed by DHS residents Mary Stephens

(former DHS Mayor Pro Tem), Adam Sanchez (current DHS City Council Member) and Steve Sobotta (current Chairman of the DHS Planning Commission), with the new Police Department represented by a police officer liaison. When on contract with the City, the Riverside County Sheriff maintained a relatively small presence in the City of DHS prompting complaints by residents about relatively slow response times and insufficient staffing. However, with the new PD that changed with the City now in charge of their own full 911 system, the creation of their own emergency operation plans, and with response times often five to seven minutes. Since the re-founding of the DHS PD, the department has continued to grow, in large part to increased funding from city Utility Users Tax and Parcel Tax measures that have won overwhelming public support. Today, the department has grown significantly in personnel since 1997, and staffed with some or the original police officers from 1997, as well as many seasoned professionals attracted to the department from other parts of the state. Many residents credit the re-founding of the DHS PD for the significant reduction of crime and better stabilization of property values and a better, safer place to call “home” and raise a family. Congratulations from the Desert Star Weekly and a big “Thank You” are certainly due to the wisdom and vision of the past City Council and other community leaders since then in making our police department a reality for the entire community to benefit.

Oktoberfest in Palm Springs

You may not have noticed, but the Coachella Valley is rapidly becoming the festival capitol of the world. There is the granddaddy of then all, the Palm Springs International Film festival, and its several smaller, more genre-focused spawn. Then there are the separate art festivals in Indio, Rancho Mirage and La Quinta; the date, tamale and chili festivals in Indio; and various other smaller events, none of them having to do with golf; and, if this isn’t enough, there are reports that the City of Indio is considering hosting three new festivals next year: a Cinco de Mayo festival, a 4th of July festival and a Latino music and arts festival. So it should come as no surprise that Palm Springs is having a festival to celebrate the month of October. Generally known as Oktoberfest, the event began in 1810 to celebrate the wedding of Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildurghausen.

PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL GALA

It has become broadly recognized throughout the world that the Palm Springs International Film Festive black-tie awards gala ranks right behind the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes in prestige, glamour and A-list celebrity attendance. And that’s the problem, being in third place means you have to defer to

those ranked above you. Thus, to avoid any conflict with the Golden Globes, the Palm Springs Film Festival has shifted the date of its awards gala to Jan. 5 – two days earlier than last year – in order not to cause appearance conflicts for presenters and honorees attending the Golden Globes, which will take place on Jan. 13th. Individual announcements of the Palm Springs festival’s star-studded lineup of honorees and presenters should begin this November, and will last all the way until January. These announcements are also remarkable in the number of Academy Award and Golden Globe nominees who first appeared on the Palm Springs’ list. Now, with the date of the Palm Springs gala set, tickets and passes to special events are now on sale at www.psfilmfest.org.

Rowing to Honolulu, Best River Cruise Line and National Parks Birthday Celebration App By Sherman Fridman

Monterey Bay to Honolulu Pacific Rowing Race More people have flown in space than have rowed across an ocean. But you now have the opportunity of joining this elite group of adventurers as British-based New Ocean Wave has begun taking applications for the Pacific Rowing Race, a distance of 2,400 miles across the Pacific Ocean from Monterey Bay, California to Honolulu, Hawai–No engine, no sails, just muscle. The last ocean rower to complete the Monterey Bay to Honolulu route was environmental campaigner Roz Savage. Savage will serve as a race consultant to those taking part in the Pacific Rowing Race and will give all crews the benefit of her unique knowledge of the route and her experience as the first female to row across all three of the world’s major oceans: Atlantic, Pacific and Indian. Only a handful of boats have made this Pacific Ocean crossing before now; the Pacific Rowing Race will increase that number significantly. As many as 40 boats containing one, two or four intrepid individuals from around the globe set off across the Pacific, the world’s largest ocean. As can be imagined, the race will be extremely challenging and will push the crews to their limits mentally, emotionally and physically. Each boat uses only human power. Crews will take more than one million oar strokes and burn more than 250,000 calories as they cover the 2,400mile route in a journey that will take them between 35 to 90 days to complete. The boats are ruggedly designed and purpose built, using carbon fiber and Kevlar to make the boats as light and strong as possible. Depending on the size of the crew,

AmaWaterways European River Cruise the boats are approximately 26 feet long and five feet wide. Crews row around the clock, taking turns to rest or eat. Each crew member aims to complete the race without accepting outside assistance and will set out with everything they need including food, medical supplies and satellite communication equipment. The flotilla of boats will be shadowed by a number of support yachts able to provide assistance if it is required. Still interested? Then there are two things to keep in mind. The race starts from Monterey Bay on June 7, 2014, enough time, it is hoped, for participants to come up with the entry fee of approximately $20,000 to $25,000, per boat, depending on the number of crew and the dollar/pound exchange rate.

A highlight of the evening was AmaWaterways’ recognition as the Best River Cruise Line; an impressive accomplishment for a company that only just celebrated its tenth year in operation. Although it is headquartered in Chatsworth, CA, AmaWaterways is one of the premier river cruise lines on Europe’s Danube, Rhine, Main, Mosel and Rhone rivers. AmaWaterways’ flotilla of ships, all new to AmaWaterways this century, feature all-inclusive European cruises that include all meals, wine with dinner, daily shore excursions with a variety of activity levels, complimentary Internet and Wi-Fi along with use of a fleet of on-board bicycles. Business

Howdy Folks – Lets Talk About Money By Reno Fontana So, here I sit with pen in hand and a blank sheet of paper in front of me, trying to figure out how to condense the million words in my head about life and business down to 1000 words for an introductory story. As you’ve probably deduced, I’m old school. I’m not writing this on a computer. And I’m not sitting at a big fancy desk. I’m at my kitchen table with an egg salad sandwich, some Pringles, a cold glass of milk and Elvis music playing on the stereo. But I have an idea - an idea that is not just for my story today, but for story number 500 five years from now. I don’t know how other writers work, but I need to have an idea of the ending of a story before I can write the first word of the first chapter of a new story. So I’m looking far ahead, and I like what I see. A friend of mine calls it “future tripping.” It means planning so far into the future you get excited about all the possibilities. You might have to change course on the way to your dream, but never let the dream out of your sight. So pull up a chair, prop up your feet, pour yourself a glass of lemonade, put on your reading glasses, and get comfortable.

Let’s get started, and take our first step on this thousand mile journey together toward prosperity. In the coming weeks, months and years, I am going to talk to you about money. I hold no economic degree, never took a single college course, and have no training in journalism. But what I do have is 35 years of business knowledge. I have turned a $500 investment into a multi-million dollar enterprise, and I’ve done it twice. I have the documents and the witnesses to prove it. What I lack in formal business education, I more than make up with real world experience. The first thing you need to know about me is that I cannot cast the first stone. Every person who has ever lived has regrets. That includes me. Everybody at one time or another has made a bad decision and screwed up, and sometimes, spectacularly. Been there, done that. There is nobody, not a single human being on this planet with a perfect life record. That being said, the best thing we can do is not judge one another, but learn to forgive ourselves, and each other. Let’s move forward focusing always on a

glass half full. Let’s look for the positive in any situation and use that as our springboard to move higher in our life goals. During these last several years, most all Americans have taken a financial beating. The Great Recession in 2008-2009 has hammered people in ways not seen since The Great Depression of 1929. It affected me in a negative way financially and most all of my family, friends and business associates. People I know who had 850 FICO scores had to file bankruptcy. They lost their jobs, their income and their homes. Another fellow I know had to close a 90 year old family business. And without question many of you reading this column took hard hits and suffered your own financial losses. There are literally millions of tough time stories among millions of people as a result of the near global financial meltdown these past several years. I sympathize with anyone who has lost sleep at night worrying about paying the rent, utilities or medical bills. But here’s the great news. We survived the blows. We weathered the storm and everything the devil could throw at us. Now it’s time to fight our way back in ways that are bigger and better than ever before. The opportunities for business success today are greater than at any time in the last 50 years. I am an underdog kind of guy. I’m generally not inspired by anyone who starts a new company with a couple million dollars. Try as you might, it is highly unlikely you can convince me to be a cheerleader for anybody who begins a new journey with a big bankroll. Having a large checking account, money in reserve, all of the bills paid in advance and little or nothing to worry about financially is not a scenario many Americans can relate to. I’m certainly not jealous of any wealthy person. God Bless the rich for being able to live a life without financial concerns. It is a goal most everyone strives to achieve. Having the ability to take three or four exotic vacations a year is a wonderful thing. A great deal can be learned from people with money. I am genuinely happy for anyone who is in the top one percent of wealth in America. In fact, I intend to bring some of the wealthiest people in the United States to my upcoming money seminars so they can share their rags to riches story first hand. But for sheer inspiration, I am moved most by the single mom who is creating a new clothing line, or some other product, and she is fueling her dream only with her passion and the unwavering belief that she can succeed. Never mind that she is working out of a little cramped corner in her house and her electric bill is past due, the gas tank in her 100,000 mile car is on empty, or that she only has enough food in the fridge to feed he kids, and not herself. These life situations would cripple the minds of some, but to her, it’s a temporary bump in the road on the way to glory at a

Reno Fontana is a business professional spring fashion show in Milan. She doesn’t see the immediate obstacles in front of her; she sees victory on the catwalk in Italy. It’s that “future tripping” thing I was telling you about earlier. This is the kind of story that excites and motivates me to be the best I can possibly be in this short time all of us have on this earth. Some of the greatest success stories in the world have been created out of improbable beginnings. JK Rowling wrote the first Harry Potter book after battling depression and suicidal thoughts. Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart, was evicted from his first store. Sheldon Adelson was the son of a Boston cab driver and borrowed $200 at age 12 to start selling newspapers. Today, he owns the Las Vegas Sands Hotel. These three people started behind the eight ball, overcame tremendous obstacles and became billionaires. Finding a reason to press on during the climb of your own personal mountain is a trait shared by all successful people. There is no shame in failure or having gone through tough times. Just never let “giving up” be a life option for you. Success could be just one

more phone call or meeting away. My columns, as you’ll come to see, will be part Larry the Cable Guy, part Donald Trump, part Reverend Billy Graham (who I had the tremendous pleasure of personally meeting in 1974), part Ronald Reagan and ALWAYS with a dash of Elvis thrown in for flavor. Humor, money matters, religion, politics and music are part of everyday life. And they’ll always be part of my stories because you can’t discuss business, finance and investment without all those ingredients. And they’ll certainly be about money. Whether you have $50 dollars to invest, or $50 million, you’ll discover here in these stories how to be smart with your cash and to make it a tool that works for you. Thanks for joining me on this exciting new business adventure. As The King would say, “Thank you. Thankyouverymuch”. Crime Blotter Save-A-Pet Vandalized Again

DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA – The SaveA-Pet charity was struck again by vandals on Monday night, said Kennel Manager Stacy Lawler. “They threw quick cement and paint against the Puppy Room to seal it off, smashed water pipes and tore up the Tortoise Pen,” in the latest round of vandalism to strike the no-kill animal sanctuary in the past two weeks.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley – President Gerald Ford/La Quinta Unit (326 pledges) The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club – Conway South Carolina (309 pledges) “In recognition of these young people’s achievement, our partners at Samsung Electronics America and Universal Studios will award each of the winning Clubs with an ENERGY STAR qualified Samsung LED TV and a library of Universal movie titles. The top pledge driver (Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley – Desert Hot Springs Unit) also wins a trip to Universal Studios Hollywood.”

“This is the tenth time we have been vandalized and the worst thing is what they did to Lucy, our senior Golden Retriever-mix. They pinned her under a wheel barrow in a trench,” Lawler said. The vandal, who appears to be very familiar with the property, has been breaking in every few days letting dogs out, stealing items and damaging property. Approximately $3,000 worth of dog food was stolen from a shed at the adoption center in early August. Crimestoppers is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the theft and vandalism at Save A Pet. Neighbors report seeing vandals but are reluctant to sign a police report for fear of retaliation. In the meantime, the organization is setting up its own security efforts to catch the vandals in action. Call the DHS Police Department at 760329-6411, with any information on these crimes.

Living Longer

Tibetan Rituals To Stop Aging (Part Three) By Art Kunkin, Mr. Life Extension In this column, I present the third of six ancient Tibetan exercises or rituals said to stop the aging process. For the convenience of readers, I will also repeat instructions for the first and second exercises as published in this newspaper on August 9 and 16, 2012. “Ancient Secret of The Fountain of Youth” by author Peter Kelder, the 1939 book from which these exercises have been taken, was an international publishing sensation, selling over two million copies throughout the world in the 1980s and 1990s Outselling many New York Times best-sellers, this book was also on bestseller lists in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, having been published in two dozen foreign language editions. Testimonials by readers provided by the publisher say that doing these exercises has improved vision, darkens grey hair, relieves arthritis pain, results in weight loss and improves memory. Among those who have recommended a reading of “Ancient Secret of The Fountain of Youth” are actor Martin Sheen, Medical Doctor Bernie S. Siegel and author John Gray, (“Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus”). The book’s simple story tells of author Kelder meeting an aged British Army officer who had heard legends of a Tibetan monastery where aging could be reversed. This British colonel returned to India after his retirement, located the monastery and came back years later as a much younger and vigorous person. Colonel Bradford then established a “Himalaya Club” where Kelder learned the first five of these Tibetan Rites. The 6th Rite was only taught to selected members of the Himalaya Club.

Tibetan symbols of longevity

I plan to teach all six of these exercises for stopping the aging process at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center starting Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. along with other life extension methods. In this class I will reveal aspects of these Tibetan practices that were evidently not taught to author Kelder. More about this class at the end of this column.

The first exercise consists of a spinning said to improve the performance of the endocrine glands. The Tibetans believe that the human body contains “energy vortexes” often associated with the endocrine glands (termed “chakras” in Sanskrit) that slow down and deteriorate as a result of aging but can be brought back to a state of perfect health by rotating the body and certain stretches. The instructions given by Kelder for

the first exercise are to stand erect with arms outstretched, horizontal to the floor. Then, without wandering from that spot, slowly spin around. When learning to do this spinning, stop as soon as you begin to get dizzy. Kelder specifies that a beginner should start with as few as three repetitions of each exercise, working up to a maximum of 21 repetitions of each. When I learned the first spinning exercise, I was additonaly taught that men turn in a clockwise direction (imagine a clock on the ground with its face up) while women turn counter-clockwise. Also, when the arms are outstretched, the right palm faces up drawing energy from the heavens while the left palm faces down, returning the energy to the ground after the chakras have been rotated. The human being is thus visualized as a transformer Art Kunkin, Mr. Life Extension of heavenly energy. Before spinning, I face the East this, lift your legs, knees straight into a and recite a Longevity Mantra. vertical position. Then slowly lower both the head and the legs to the floor, keeping the knees as straight as possible. Breathe in deeply as you lift the head and legs; breathe out fully as you lower them. The third rite should be practiced immediately after rite two. Kneel on the floor with the body erect. Then incline the head and neck forward, tucking the chin against the chest. Then move the head and neck back as far as they will go, at the same time leaning backward, arching the spine. As you arch, brace your arms against your thighs for support. After arching, return to the original position. Also do this third rite also a minimum of three times and a maximum of 21 when you can easily do this many repetitions I plan to hold these Living Longer classes every Thursday night from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center, 59700 29 Palms Highway starting Thursday, Sept. 13. Please phone me at 760-7922032 to register. I will give instruction on Tibetan rites four, five and six in the next issues of the Desert Star Weekly

“I can and I will add many, many years to my life because I am strong, conscious and have many, many goals to complete. My life is healthy, happy and prosperous.”

Time the required maximum number of turns (21) by repeating this mantra four times while turning. The second Tibetan rite continues the stimulation of the seven body energy vortexes or chakras. One lays flat on the floor, face up, on a carpet or padded surface. Then fully extend your arms, placing the palms of your hands against the floor, keeping the fingers together. Then raise your head off the floor, tucking the chin against the chest. As you do

Dining Out

Culinary Art At Its Finest – A Global Fusion Arnold Palmer’s Restaurant – The Best Dining Experience Ever By Jackie Devereaux LA QUINTA, CA – I have dined at many five-star restaurants over the past four decades from San Francisco to San Diego and from Las Vegas to Palm Springs and have enjoyed them all. But without reservation, I can honestly say that the meal prepared by Chef Ivan Flowers at Arnold Palmer’s Restaurant was, to date, the best dining experience ever. My three dinner companions agreed, and there are several reasons for all this high praise. First, Chef Flowers planned our six-course tasting meal with careful thought, pairing each dish with the perfect Champagne, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah or Port wine, right down to the dessert. “I think about how delicious I want to make every plate of food for every guest,” Flowers said. Second, his entire kitchen staff and general manager win bragging rights for the perfect execution of his bold and daring tasting menu. “The service, atmosphere and food must all blend together for a total dining experience,” he said. Third, the breathtakingly beautiful restaurant features the King of golf, Arnold Palmer, in all his glory giving the feel of a very “private golf club.” We were surrounded by historic photos and artwork, including personal items from Palmer’s award-winning golf career. It’s this three-prong philosophy about fine dining - Service, Atmosphere and Food - that has earned Chef Flowers awards and accolades from the culinary art community. He has been featured in many publications, including the Food Arts Magazine, Frommer’s, Cognescenti, the Arizona Republic, Sedona Monthly, Sedona Magazine, Fox News Arizona, Good Morning Arizona, Traveling with Francoise and the New York Times. Our party of four was met inside the restaurant entrance by Tracy Phillips, the public relations gal and General Manager Dustin Nichols, who gave us a tour of the restaurant

Inside Arnie’s Pub

Arnold Plmer’s Restaurant in La Quinta and served double-duty as our Sommelier for the evening. Nichols explained that the newly renovated patio area would be open for dining by mid-to- late September. It features a putting green, desert landscaping, misters and open-air seating overlooking the beautiful Santa Rosa Mountains. However enticing the outdoor dining patio looked, we were directed b a ck i ns i d e through a packed main bar called Arnie’s Pub where patrons listened to the musical Chef Ivan Flowers stylings of Johnny Me za. Thes e patrons consisted of a mostly 40- to 80-year-old, upper-class, casually elegant crowd. After touring the Trophy and Wine Room, where parties of up to 20 people can dine in a more private setting, we were led to the Master’s Room, where one (replica) of Palmer’s four green Master’s jackets was proudly framed as the centerpiece of the room. Two adjoining dining rooms, the US Open and the British Open, were closed, but are available for seating as business dictates. By the way, Palmer won four Master’s Tournaments (1958, 1960, 1962 and 1964), two British Opens (1961, 1962), and one US Open (1960). He’s won 95 professional titles and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974. His other awards and distinctions are too numerous to recount but two stick out – he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004, and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2009, the highest civilian awards in the United States. If getting starry-eyed about The King of golf wasn’t enough to impress us on this hot August night, then dining at a comfortable corner table overlooking the entire Master’s Room, sipping our elegant martinis while drizzling Spicy Chocolate Sauce over our Duck Muscovy appetizer was. I said, “Yummmm,” while the others rolled their

eyes and said, “Fantastic,” “Oh My God,” and “This is unbelievably good.” Our waitress, J.B., which stands for “Just Beautiful,” has been working at the restaurant for seven years, and confessed to being a “golf widow,” because her husband is always on the course. She entertained us with anecdotes about Palmer going from table to table (after his meal) greeting patrons. So, if you’re lucky, you may get to meet Palmer, especially if there’s a big golf tournament in town. But enough about the atmosphere and the celebrity golfer, now it’s time to go back to the kitchen where Chef Flowers brings his passion and experience to score a hole in one. With one perfect stroke, he served, The Sea Trio - a Lobster Bisque Espresso with a Spiced Grassy Bar Oyster on a half shell with a Mango Sorbet alongside some New Zealand Green Lip Mussels served with a Louis Roederer “Brut Premier” champagne. This is what fine dining is all about, and we were only on the second course. “When I am in the kitchen, I live in a world of constantly trying to achieve deliciousness. Flavor dictates plating,” he said, and that’s an understatement because his presentations were each beautiful works of culinary art. “I have dreams about chicken parmesan heroes with ice cold, full sugar Pepsi cola. In other words, I go through the world thinking about food.” It’s easy to see his obsession in his exquisite works of food art. We were then served a handcrafted fresh Mozzarella Roulade with Baby Greens, a Confit Tomato, Basil and Extra Vecchio Balsamico Drizzle paired with a White Blend, Caymus Conundrum wine from the Napa Valley - again beautiful to look at and a delicious pairing of flavors. Our third course was entitled, “Take Another Dip” - a scrumptious Maine Diver Scallop with Wild Mushroom Florentine Stuffing served along a Corn Esquite and Lobster Thermidor Sauce. Add to that flavor explosion some Seared Hawaiian Ahi Sashimi with Yuzu Vinegar Glaze

and Gastrique Bok Choy, and we were in culinary heaven. After that, he decided to bring us back to earth serving a Roasted Rack of Lamb with Garlic Basil, Persillade and Baby Fingerling Potato Artichoke Ragout served with a Cognac Mushroom Herb Jus accompanied by a Syrah from the Rubicon Estate. And last but not least, he served a TDF Tiramisu with Belgian Chocolate and Crispy Rice Arancini with Molten Chocolate Center alongside a Vanilla Coffee Anglaise. This so-called tasting meal was fit for the Gods, and everyone on the planet should be so lucky to taste his fine cuisine. It’s easy to see why any smart restaurateur would bring Chef Flowers into their team. Since July 4, he has been creating exciting new menus with foods and flavors from countries around the world. He combines a love for French and Italian cuisine with a passion for Mediterranean in what he calls “global fusion.”

New Zealand Green Lip Mussels Flowers is French Escoffier-trained and worked with James Beard Chefs Alessandra Stratta and Bradford Thompson. Prior to coming to Arnold Palmer’s, he was the Executive Chef at Different Pointe of View in Scottsdale, AZ, L’Auberge in Sedona, AZ and most recently owned Fournos in Sedona. Fournos restaurant was named a top 25 restaurant in Arizona, was featured on CNBC World’s Wine Portfolio and was known as a Chef-driven gem. Flowers’ passion for cooking came from his father, who was chef and owner of Rendezvous Restaurant in New York. He learned from his father that a good chef lets the food do the work with respect to flavor and presentation. This lesson has guided Flowers’ elaborate career, earning him and the restaurants he has led many accolades and awards. This lesson has also made Chef Flowers an accomplished and sought-out teacher to aspiring chefs from around the world. To enjoy culinary art at its finest, go to Arnold Palmer’s Restaurant located at 78164 Avenue 52 in La Quinta. Call 760-771-GOLF (4653) for reservations. TERRY HASTINGS - Fine Art Photographer Reflections of Wind, Water, Flowers and Sand

By Jackie Devereaux PALM SPRINGS, CA – A lot of people may argue that photography is not a true art form. I disagree completely, and you will too after you see what Terry Hastings can do with a camera. Maybe he doesn’t put paint to canvas or cast metal into sculptures but he does create fine art with his photographic images, and he does it in a stunning and vibrant way. Hastings’ varied art forms have evolved since childhood. “I remember when I was four years old coming down the stairs with an encyclopedia open to pages with musical notes asking my parents ‘What are these?’” he said in an interview at this studio home located inside a clothing optional apartment complex in Palm Springs.

“I asked my parents what the notes sounded like and they bought me a piano and lessons,” he said. After the piano lessons were drumming lessons, then choir, speech and painting classes. That was the beginning of his artistic journey of self-realization which eventually led to a bachelor’s degree in Theater from Cal State Northridge in 1988. While living in Los Angeles he worked as an actor, director, songwriter and costume designer but paid his monthly bills working part-time as a waiter at high-end restaurants. Each artistic endeavor in Los Angeles lead him closer and closer to enlightenment until finally in the summer of 2003, he opened a clothing design store back in his home town of Minneapolis, Minnesota called Identity Fashions. His love for vibrant

colors and fabrics quickly became noticed by the local art community including Miss BeBe Zahara Benet, who walked into Hastings’ new store and announced she needed a dress for an upcoming stage appearance with singer/actress Cyndi Lauper for a Gay Pride event. The store had been open one week and Hastings had landed his first important commission. He drew mock up designs, selected various fabrics and found the perfect combination. The only problem was the dress would cost $6,000. Benet, herself a struggling artist, couldn’t afford that, so Hastings returned to the drawing board, choosing a less expensive fabric and created a show-stopping dress for free. However, after the economy tanked in 2008, he closed his clothing design store and accepted a longtime friend’s offer for a job at Trios Restaurant in Palm Springs, where he found quick acceptance. Trios owner, Tony Marchese, made a deal to exhibit Hastings’ photography for two months to benefit a high school charity. After that he moved his

dunes north of town and knew I had to photograph there. I took 15 yards of fabric, asked a few models to pose and waited for the wind,” he said. Hastings gets inspired by movement, motion and dance with vibrant colors of fabric combined with the elements of sand, water and the wind. Hastings, now 47, works part time at the Chop House in Palm Springs, so if you frequent that restaurant, he might be your waiter. People must realize that a lot of artists from New York to Los Angeles etch out a living working part-time in restaurants. It’s a natural way of life. But for Hastings art is his true passion and he’s pursued it at every twist and turn in life. After the Incredible Artist gallery closed in Feb. 2011, Hastings moved his photographs to the Stephen Archdeacon Gallery located at 865 N. Palm Canyon in

“Sunflower Tile” Palm Springs. “I got one small wall space for three photographs because most fine art galleries don’t exhibit photographers. They just don’t think we’re artists,” he said. But after those first three pieces sold, the gallery gave him more and more space until now his work adorns the gallery’s walls in one entire room and both front windows. To date, Hastings has sold 40 photographs ranging in price from $165 to $2,600 each.

“Palm Springs has blossomed into a world-class art, architecture and design destination. We are proud to be part of this renaissance by bringing together the work of leading local artists with collectors, designers and art lovers from around the globe,” said Stephen Archdeacon. “Our gallery specializes in the art of figurative and abstract artists who live and work in Palm Springs and the West Coast.” Hastings also was one of the featured artists at Wang’s of the Desert restaurant for about two years where his work was sold to benefit two local charities - the

AIDS Assistance Program and the Friends of Palm Springs Animal Shelter. Wang’s of the Desert closed briefly over the summer for renovations and is scheduled to reopen on Thursday, Aug. 30. For more information about Hastings’ art, go to www.incredibleartist.com or www.terryhastingsgallery.com and www. stephenarchdeacongallery.com or call 760673-7523 for an appointment to view his work.

AUGUST 30 - september 5, 2012

I Wonder What Happened Before The Beginning Of Time? Whose Side Is Time On Anyway? By Terrance K. Phillips Time happens. I have always wondered why the human intellect is driven by the insecurity of time. It appears we feel a need to compartmentalize time and stuff it into little boxes. We have nano-seconds, seconds, minutes, hours, days, months and years. Then there are decades, eons and who knows what? Apparently, it is only the human animal that has this need. I have never seen a Dachshund wearing a wristwatch and if one of them lived in Beverly Hills, the watch would be called a “Rolloverlex.” “Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.” “Speed limit is 65 miles per hour.” “I’ll be back tomorrow.” “It’s Back To School Time.” Does this sound familiar? Do aardvarks, kangaroos, or duckbilled platypuses share these sayings with one another? Do they wear f u n ny, p oi nt y hats and masks on Halloween? Do They blow horns exactly at midnight on New Year’s Eve? A minute later and it’s really just another day. Have you ever given much thought as to why homosapiens are the only species that necessitates this insecure need?

What if time was a continuous action—from beginning to end? No compartments, no restriction on length of accomplishments. Intimacy would last for days with no exploitation of procedures. Could this possibly mean that an NFL game could go on forever without commercial interruption? It could, but we seem to want to direct time and be in control of it every moment of the day. We want our team to score and then halt the rest of the game by calling “time-out.” Time ignores this command because it really doesn’t stop, does it? It goes on and on. It occurred to me that “time” isn’t on our side.

Time restricts us by always requiring a definitive ending. Do we ever focus on definitive beginnings? Where do we start and where does it end? Do you ever wonder what went on before the beginning of time? Now there’s a multifarious question for you. It doesn’t seem to matter to me if I wear a Rolex or a Timex, as I can be late to a meeting wearing either one. Time does not define me; however, it does determine my waist size as 20 years, five months, three days, four hours and 18 seconds ago my belts were eight-inches shorter. I guess we focus on endings because we are insecure about the future. We need to know that the sun will rise at 6 a.m. every day and the turkey needs two days to thaw in the refrigerator. We need to know that our wrinkles are really just ticks on a clock and a man’s smile could last for up to four hours or, you should consult with your physician. I guess it’s our requirement for “endings” that define us. With all this being said, I have an appointment to get my haircut at 3 p.m. This will take approximately 30 minutes and then I have to run over to the liquor store and purchase some vintage 1987 Dom Perignon Champagne before the sale ends tomorrow at 5 p.m. If I don’t hurry up, I’ll miss “Dancing With The Stars.” I’m just kidding, as I sat at home last New Year’s Eve all by myself trying to keep my eyes open to watch the ball drop. I missed the last two hours of the year—no ball drop, no bubbly, no pointy hats with a bevy of beauties wearing black dresses—just me and some Bon Bons. However, I do hold the knowledge that answers this entire thought-provoking colloquy—Have a great eternity. Terrance K. Safety Awareness

Holiday Safety-Labor Day Weekend Story By Charles Bennett Jr. Here we are at another holiday weekend. It seems like just yesterday it was Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. As we are all getting older, the holidays come and go at a faster rate. Unfortunately, not everyone gets older with us because they cease to exist due to irresponsible behavior. How many of us have had a loved one killed or seriously injured by a drunk driver? Or have killed or seriously injured someone else because they were driving drunk or had some other kind of alcohol related incident? It isn’t funny that the drunk driver most often ends up walking away from an accident with only minor injuries.

We all know that the legal limit in California is .08 percent blood alcohol content. For those under 21, any blood alcohol content is illegal resulting in the loss of their driver’s license until age 21. However, here are a few pieces of information that most people do not know. In California, if a driver gets into an accident that results in any injury to another person and their blood alcohol content is as low as .03 percent, they can be charged with driving under the influence. If someone is driving under the influence and kills another person, they will serve a mandatory 25 year prison sentence. If a driver is intoxicated and gets into an accident that is not their fault, they will still be charged with driving under the influence and determined at fault because they should not be driving in the first place. Additionally, if someone is not drinking and their driver’s license is suspended, revoked or expired and get into an accident that is not their fault, they will also be determined at fault because they should not

be driving. If a d r ive r is under the i n f lu e nc e and another person who is intoxicated and for whatever reason, touches the steering wheel causing an accident or erratic driving, both can be charged with driving under the influence because the second person essentially assumes control of the vehicle. In the same circumstance, if the driver is sober and the passenger is intoxicated, the passenger can be charged. All of the above examples also apply to those who are under the influence of narcotics as well. According to Officer Joe Zagorski of the California Highway Patrol-Indio area, there have been 306 DUI arrests from June 1 to Aug. 20 and 26 DUI arrests of drivers under 21 in the same period. Additionally in the same period, there have been 23 DUI related collisions, seven DUI related collisions resulting in injuries and thankfully no DUI related collisions resulting in fatalities. Officer Zagorski further reminds us that Interstate 10 will be highly traveled during the holiday weekend and there will be an increase in officer presence seeking out those who choose to drive while intoxicated. Corporal A. Ramos of the Riverside County Sheriff ’s Department said that holiday weekends generally generate a higher volume of alcohol related calls for service. “People should use extra caution when driving during the busy Labor Day weekend. Drivers should obey all traffic laws, follow the speed limit, don’t drink and drive and give yourself enough time to get to your destination.” There will be a zero tolerance approach for drunk drivers and if caught, the person will be arrested. Additionally, persons should report drunk drivers by dialing 911. Indio Police Department Spokesman Benjamin Guitron said that they expect a larger number of loud music complaints from parties and advises that they are in violation of City Code 95c. Upon a first complaint, officers will generally issue a strong warning. If they have to return, officers will shut the party down and issue a citation resulting in a fine. Guitron also asked that those hosting parties or other activities to be respectful of their neighbors. In Desert Hot Springs, Commander Ken Peary said the city will have a large amount of visitors enjoying the spas and advises that officers will be actively seeking out

vehicle and pedestrian violations, failure to use seatbelts, drivers using their cellular phones and intoxicated drivers. With that said, Commander Peary wants everyone to enjoy the holiday. If attending holiday functions or parties, please have a designated driver. That does not mean the person who has

had the least amount to drink either! If there is not a designated driver, call a taxi. Additionally, it is not advised that one who is intoxicated walk near busy streets or alone as it could result in being a victim of a crime or potentially struck by a vehicle. If consuming alcohol, do not drink in excess, as it will in many cases, have a negative effect on one’s behavior. The result could end relationships, result in an arrest, possible injury or death and even end one’s career. As we all know, the heat will cause us to get dehydrated, as does alcohol consumption, so be sure to drink plenty of water regardless. Do not be a statistic. Do not let your loved ones be a statistic either. Try and imagine how it would feel being the cause of someone else’s death or losing a loved one due to someone else’s lack of responsibility. Not a very good thought, is it? Have a wonderful and safe holiday.

Popular Chicken Chewies Blamed for 900 Dog Deaths

Nationwide, USA – Alarmed pet owners across the nation are complaining that their dogs were sickened or died after eating popular brands of chicken jerky dog treats that were produced in China. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received more than 900 complaints since January 2012 and issued a number of warnings about the pet food products throughout the past four years. Concerned pet owners claim their dogs began vomiting after eating the chicken chewies and some dogs experienced kidney failure resulting in death. The growing number of complaints are targeted at three brands of chicken chewies, all made in factories in China: Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch, made by Nestle Purina, and Milo’s Kitchen Home-style Dog Treats, made by Del Monte. Pet owners have launched a nationwide campaign to recall the pet treat products on Facebook. However, the manufacturers have denied any link between their products and the dogs’ illness. (photo does not have to be taken at The Living Desert). Along with the photo, students must submit a 100-word statement that supports the photo, the date and location it was taken, and how it exemplifies their passion for The Living Desert. Parents may assist their younger kids in writing this. The contest is open to Coachella Valley residents who are currently between the ages of four and 12 years old. Submissions will be accepted until Oct. 15, and winners will be selected and notified by email or by phone.

Warm Humid Weather Bring Pests To Pets Warm weather brings the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors with their furry loved ones. But it also brings the risk of flea and tick infestation. Veterinarians across the country are expecting an abundance of fleas and ticks this year, due in part to warmer temperatures in some areas of the nation. “Fleas and ticks are more than simple nuisances for your pets,” said Laura Petree, DVM, Manager of Technical Services for Central Garden and Pet Company. “They can cause your pet discomfort, and in the case of ticks, put your pets and your family at risk for a variety of diseases.” Dr. Petree said that flea eggs can account for 50 percent of a domestic flea infestation. One adult female flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day. If your pet has 10 fleas, your problem suddenly multiplies to 15,000 fleas in a month. “In order to effectively protect your dog or cat from fleas and ticks, you need to address any initial infestation problem, then keep the problem from coming back,” she said. Prevention is the best course of action.

Making your yard unfriendly to pests is a good place to start. Don’t give fleas and ticks a welcoming environment. Mow regularly, keep shrubs trimmed and rake up leaves. Keep the garbage covered so it won’t attract rodents - that means fleas and ticks won’t have any help getting close to your house. Outdoor sprays can be used on lawns, flowers, trees and shrubs. They kill and repel fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, ants, crickets and other insects. Spray wherever your pet frequents the most. Allow it to dry before letting pets or people onto the treated area. Whenever you groom your dog or cat, check for fleas and ticks. Signs of fleas include redness and scratching as well as what’s known as flea dirt - black flea droppings left on your pet’s coat. Ticks are most commonly found around the neck, in the ears, in the folds between the legs and body, and in between the toes. Cats may also have them around the neck and face. Topical treatments contain an insect growth regulator (IGR) that kills flea eggs and prevents

re-infestation. They kill and repel fleas, ticks and mosquitoes for up to 30 days. Shampoos and mists can also be used to complement your pet’s regular flea and tick control maintenance. Shampoos clean your pet by eliminating adult fleas, ticks and flea dirt. The active ingredients must come in contact with the pests for a certain period of time in order to be effective. Results are immediate. However, because shampoos have no long-lasting effects, it’s a good idea to follow the shampoo with a dip or maintenance product. Mists are used to kill fleas, ticks and mosquitos on dogs and cats instantly. Flea eggs and larvae will be prevented for one to two months. Sometimes, despite your best efforts, your pet brings home some unwanted pests. Quickly kill biting adult fleas and offer several days of flea protection by using short-term control products for severe infestation problems. Sprays, dips, shampoos and other products can be used to help combat an infestation problem until it is under

control. Vacuuming plays an important role in getting a flea infestation under control. This will help remove newly emerged fleas, flea dirt, eggs and some larvae from the carpets. Treating your home with carpet powders, carpet sprays, room foggers or home sprays will help control fleas. Every area your pet frequents should be treated - including the garage, basement, kennel and yard. Fleas are some of the best jumpers of all known animals. They can jump around 200 times their own body length. Only about five percent of the flea population is mature adults. The other 95 percent are in the egg, larva, or pupa stage of development. A female flea sucks up to 30 times her weight in blood - every day. Ticks are not insects. They are actually arachnids and are closely related to mites, spiders and scorpions. Ticks don’t burrow under the skin. In order to feed, they actually bite. Only adult female ticks feed off the blood of their host.
