New Police Chief Introduced at Rotary Luncheon Crime Rate Down 30 Percent in first half of 2012 by Jackie Devereaux DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA – The new incoming police chief was formally introduced to the public at the monthly Rotary Club luncheon held last Thursday at the Agua Soleil Hotel restaurant. Commander Kate Singer will officially take over the helm on Aug. 9 when outgoing DHS Police Chief Patrick Williams leaves to accept a chief ’s position in Petaluma, California. Chief Williams accepted the chief ’s job with the DHS police department in June 2007, and over the past five years has achieved statewide recognition for implementing anti-crime programs that have lowered the city’s crime rate significantly. “As of June 30, 2012, compared to the first half of 2011, the crime rate is down 30 percent in the city,” said Police Chief Williams proudly to the applause of those attending the Rotary Club luncheon. He attributes the impressive drop in crime to the Community Policing Initiative (CPI), a program where citizens participate more openly with the police department by making service calls even if those reports are considered to be of a minor nuisance nature. The high number of nuisance-related calls were never seen in the past, Williams said, pointing to a particularly bloody shooting incident in the summer of 2007 when multiple rounds were fired and police found blood trails from the scene. ‘”Not one phone call came in during that shooting,” he said. But those days of gang banging gun fights, open prostitution and drug dealing along Palm Drive are memories in the past. The battle to win back the streets from criminal thugs took a lot of hard work and dedication from the men and women in uniform, he added.

That’s because in California cities with less than 100,000 population, DHS led the state in crime in two categories of violence crimes, such as murder, rape, assault and robberies. The city has seen a successive decline in those high statistics each year, and 2012 has the potential to be the lowest crime rate ever, he said. “There is still more work to be done,” Chief Williams said as he introduced Commander Katie Singer, as his number one choice to take over command as police chief Singer is the first female police chief in Riverside County, and only two percent of all police chiefs are women nationwide. Singer visited DHS seven times before putting in her application with the police department. “I saw how strongly the community embraced the police department here, and didn’t want to miss an opportunity to work with Chief Williams. He’s known statewide for his work,” she said. Singer focused on the future saying the police department will be operating with a full staff of 34 police officers soon, including five new positions filled by officers from Cathedral City and Indio, two cities that recently reduced their police force due to budget cuts. “We in DHS will be operating with a full staff soon and those five new officers bring a collective 100 years of experience with them,” she said. There are approximately 98,000 police officers working in the state of California today. In 2007, DHS had 17 officers, in 2012 we will have 34 officers. Singer described how the Coachella Valley police departments are structured. DHS, Palm Springs, Cathedral City and Indio all have their own police departments, while Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert Indian

Commander Kate Singer Wells, La Quinta and Coachella are patroled by the Riverside County Sheriff ’s Department. The three police departments at the west end of the Valley, (DHS, Palm Springs and Cathedral City) may implement a Regionalized Dispatch Center for service calls known as ERICA, or the Eastern Riverside Interoperation Communication Agency. This gives those areas a unified service model with huge cost benefits. The mayors of these three cities meet quarterly to discuss police and fire service, but Palm Springs is reluctant to “give up” anything. However, these three cities share boundaries and could improve service while reducing cost if they implemented the Regionalized Dispatch Center. “If and when the Big One happens (referring to a major earthquake or other natural disaster), we have to operate together.”

Tribal Council Election Announced PALM SPRINGS, CA –– The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians announced Tribal Council election results in June, naming Mr. Jeff L. Grubbe as chairman. Chairman Grubbe is the first newly elected Chairman of the Tribal Council since Chairman Richard M. Milanovich passed away on March 11. Chairman Milanovich had served on the Tribal Council since 1978, and had been chairman for 28 years. Chairman Grubbe stated that he is “humbled and honored to be elected to serve as Chairman for the Tribal Council, and will continue to follow tribal traditions of strong leadership, determination and compassion.” Chairman Grubbe has served on the Tribal Council since 2006, and has been Vice Chairman since 2007. Prior to the Tribal Council, Chairman Grubbe served on the Agua Caliente Child Development

Committee, the Agua Caliente Election B oard, the Gaming Commission, a n d t h e Tr i b a l Building Committee. Chairman Grubbe als o joined the Agua Caliente Development Authority (ACDA) and has been involved with the authority since 2003. He also gained important experience at the Agua Caliente Casino Resort and Spa as a tribal intern in 1999. Vincent Gonzales III, Secretary/ Treasurer, Member Anthony Andreas III, and Member Jessica Norte continue in their elected terms on the Agua Caliente Tribal Council.

“We learned from 9-11 that there has to be a seamless interaction of departments.” Singer said a new and upgraded contract has been approved by the city council this month for the Graffiti Abatement Program which includes the introduction of an app for iPhones that generates a photo of the graffiti and instantly sends a report to the police department through the mydeserthotsprings.com. Singer explained how officers caught a young man in the act of spraying graffiti and he confessed to a few other incidents. After officers pieced together 38 similar graffiti marks totaling more than $38,000 in damages, the district attorney’s office decided to prosecute to the full extent of the law. “If someone reports graffiti, there will be a live person answering the phone 24 hours a day,” she said.

Those were the questions facing the Also making the numbers and star availability Annenberg Theater Council before the upcoming 2012-2013 season. Fortunately, for lovers of live entertainment the Annenberg Theater has found its niche. The presentation of large on-stage Broadway productions will be ceded to the McCallum Theatre. Outdoor music festivals will have the Empire Polo Club as their main venue, and the desert’s casino showrooms will have the A-list showroom acts. Meanwhile, the Annenberg Theater will present concerts by Tony-recognized Broadway stars. Located within the Palm Springs Art Museum, the Annenberg Theater, with its nearperfect acoustics, is a 433-seat, state-of-the-art facility presenting the unique experience that can only be provided by live, professional theater. She was able to secure the talents of six artists with five Tony Awards and 15 Tony nominations, between them. Singer, actress Sutton Foster will headline the Nov. 17 season-opening concert. She earned Tonys for her Broadway performances nominations in “Anything Goes” and “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” as well as Tony nominations for her appearances in “Shrek, The Musical,” “The Drowsy Chaperone” and “Little Women.” Foster also has a hit TV show, “Bunheads,” on the ABC Family channel. MOVIE SET AT FANTASY SPRINGS RESORT CASINO Not all performances occur on stage. Sometimes the venue is the stage, as when the entire resort property of the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio became part of a major movie shoot for a TV movie to air on the SYFY Channel Titled, “Blowing Vegas off the Map,” the film, which stars Frankie Muniz and Barry Bostwick, uses the grounds of the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino to create three distinct movie sets: a western themed hotel complete with cacti and a giant buffalo; a replica of the famed Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino; and an Egyptianthemed Isis Hotel and Casino. I won’t give away the plot, but the film takes place during a Spring Break Pool party, and will feature special effects created by a Beijing-based company as well as effects crafted by the wizards at Industrial Light & Magic.

AGUA CALIENTE CASINO RESORT SPA HOSTS POOL PARTIES Not to be outdone by movie magic – to say nothing about surgical augmentation - the Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa in Rancho Mirage has begun its series of Caliente Pool Parties, part of a bikini contest worth more than $5,000 in cash and prizes to the participates. The Caliente Pool Party runs every Friday evening from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., with the contest starting at 10:00 p.m. Contestants must be at least 21 years old to enter. Three weekly winners will each receive $100 in cash, complimentary entry to all Caliente Pool Parties and a complimentary hotel room on Aug. 31, the day of the finals. The grand prize winner will take home

$2,500 in cash, plus she will receive a professional photo shoot so she can become the ‘face’ of next year’s Caliente Pool Party. Second and third place winners will receive cash prizes of $1,500 and $1,000, respectively.

WOLFGANG PUCK PIZZA BAR ON EL PASEO El Paseo – the Desert’s Rodeo Drive – is getting the food recognition it deserves. No longer will hungry Beverly Hills and West Los Angeles trendies have to forgo a trip to a Wolfgang Puck restaurant when they visit the Coachella Valley. Wolfgang Puck’s second pizza bar, (the first one just opened in Charlotte, North Carolina), called “Wolfgang Puck Pizza Bar,” is currently constructing a 4,000-sq. feet restaurant on fashionable El Paseo. While the restaurant will not be one of Puck’s Fine Dining Group’s gourmet establishments, it will feature a variety of pizzas, pastas, sandwiches, salads and desserts. There will also be a full bar and a kids menu. Construction of the Wolfgang Puck Pizza Bar is slated to begin by the fall, with the first pies coming out of the oven in 2013. I’ll have a pepperoni, please.

Marriott Courts LGBT by Sherman Fridman

MARRIOTT MARKETING CAMPAIGN TARGETS LGBT COMMUNITY Mention the name “Marriott” to most travelers and they will think of hotels. But for decades, the Marriott-family name has also been associated with conservative, very conservative, family values. That’s why Marriott’s announcement last month of a new marketing campaign aimed at lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) travelers is newsworthy. Titled, “Be You, With Us,” the campaign is being launched throughout the summer to celebrate the LGBT communities in cities around the world that host gay pride parades and festivals. Along with imagery and messages that welcome all guests to be themselves when staying at a Marriott-brand facility, the marketing campaign concludes with a sweepstakes where one grand prize winner and companion will receive a trip valued at $5,000 to either the 2013 New York, San Francisco or Berlin Gay Pride Festival. Some of the special packages designed to appeal to the LGBT community are: The Rainbow NOLA offer, which features deluxe accommodations at several New Orleans hotels plus two complimentary welcome drinks and a Gay guide map to New Orleans. The Get a Room! Vancouver Pride package includes overnight accommodations in a king deluxe studio, a hot buffet breakfast, parking, two door passes to Celebrities Night Club and two cocktails in the hotel’s restaurant. The Rainbow Connection LGBT special offer at the Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa in Hawaii that includes a $300 hotel credit plus daily breakfast for two in the resort’s restaurant. These special offers are not limited to a few hotels, and those guests interested in Marriott’s LGBT special offers should inquire when making their reservations at any Marriott property. Participating Marriott brands include JW Marriott; Renaissance; Autograph; Marriott Hotels & Resorts; Courtyard, Spring Hill suites; Fairfield Inn; Residence Inn; and TownPlace Suites. But, you say, “My partner and I are straight.” Go ahead; book one of the available special promotions

anyway…who would know? Or, you can wait until later this year when Marriott plans to launch new campaigns to reach African American and Latino guests. Here’s an idea: Why not have all special offers available to anyone, at anytime, without any differentiation? It probably wouldn’t work; no one would be able to consider themselves as special.

FOUR SEASON HOTEL HAMPSHIRE LONDON Before there was a New Hampshire there was a Hampshire; a storybook land set in the English countryside with sleepy hamlets tucked in among rolling hills, dense forests and flower-filled meadows, just an hour’s drive from central London. It’s also the location of a gentrified Georgian manor house set in 500 acres of gentle fields, ultramodern on the inside, but retaining a quintessential historic look with red brick façade and heritage-listed gardens. Savvy international travelers know that the Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire provides a unique country retreat with all the amenities and color of an English estate, including an equestrian center, shooting and fishing coupled with such modern day pursuits as a luxury spa, as well as hard and grass tennis courts. It’s easy to feel like the lord or lady of the manor here as you relish a few carefree days away from the hustle of London, the rest of your European tour or to escape the Olympic festivities. But, what about London, surely it’s not to be missed, especially after the Olympics, when fall sets in and London’s West End, with its designer shops, turns into a fairyland of multicolored lights and decorated shop windows in anticipation of the

approaching holidays. This year the excitement will be enhanced as the Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane - re-opened to seven-star acclaim after having been closed for a two-year total renovation – welcome guests with that Four Seasons cache. At the Four Seasons Park Lane, British sophistication is blended with urban chic, all served up by an impeccably-trained staff. The room count has been reduced in favor of more suites with conservatories and balconies and there is a new openness to all the public spaces. Guest rooms overlook Hyde Park, but by far the hotel’s most impressive view is from the top-floor 360-degree glass-walled fitness center, featuring a view that pans from the London Eye to Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. The Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane, in the heart of London, truly offers the best of British refinement and innovation.

CELL PHONE USE ON AIRPLANE FLIGHTS The issue of cell phone use on airplanes has been in the news lately, so a travel advocacy group decided to ask 855 travelers: What would you do if another airline passenger seated near you won’t turn off their cell phone while in flight? Calling a flight attendant to handle the situation was the reply of 34.3 percent of respondents, 27.1 percent said that they would say something directly to the person and 23.9 percent would sit quietly and say nothing. As to the other 14.7 percent, they were probably on their cell phones and couldn’t hear the question. I wonder how the percentages would change if it were Alec Baldwin using the cell phone.

The Fixx, Stone Temple Pilots And Shawn Jones Impress With New Releases by Robert Kinsler

The Fixx and Stone Temple Pilots celebrate big anniversaries with epic releases while gifted singer-songwriter Shawn Jones is empowered by struggles

Artist: The Fixx Album: Beautiful Friction (Kirtland Records) You might be interested in buying this if you like: the 1982 Fixx album “Shuttered Room,” Simple Minds, Peter Gabriel Tell me more: It has been 30 years since the Fixx burst on the international

New Wave music scene with the album “Shuttered Room” which yielded the timeless modern rock hits “Stand or Fall” and “Red Skies.” Fast forward to 2012 and the British quintet has released another epic rock album, “Beautiful Friction.” Every track on the disc is outstanding, with the driving anthem “Anyone Else,” luxuriant “Second Time Around” and hypnotic “Just Before Dawn” building on the outfit’s wonderful legacy. The ferocious “Take a Risk” and textured “Shaman” in particular showcase a band that is interested in continuing to mine new musical territory while using the hottest political and economic issues of the day as the lyrical focus of many of the songs.

On the recently-issued DVD (also available on Blu-ray), the band is captured while performing a hard-rocking 18-track set at the Riviera Theatre in Chicago in March 2010. With lead singer Scott

Weiland in fine form, the rest of the band (bassist Robert DeLeo, guitarist Dean DeLeo, drummer Eric Kretz) is amped while performing the mix of classic and new material. Highlights abound, with powerful versions of “Vasoline,” “Plush” and “Big Empty” thrilling an eager and enthusiastic crowd. The DVD includes an interview with the band as a bonus feature.

Album: Struggle Makes You Stronger (High Drive Records) You might be interested in buying this if you like: Joe Bonamassa, Jonny Lang, Tab Benoit Tell me more: Few artists possess the blend of guitar prowess, songwriting skills and great vocals displayed by Shawn Jones. On the Southern California-based artist’s latest album “Struggle Makes You Stronger,” it’s clear there is little that Jones can’t express in a song. From the scorching blues-rock of “She Don’t Know (‘Bout Her Own Mojo)” and heartfelt soul of “Day Without Rain” to the tender ballad “Sweet Victoria” and countrified blues of “Lonesome Road,” Jones has crafted another masterpiece. Local Woman Competes for Olympic Gold “Beauty is Strength”

DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA – She’s been called the “strongest woman in America” but struggles to pay her monthly bills. Sarah Robles was born in Desert Hot Springs in 1988, but began competing in the 8th grade at San Jacinto High School, said Principal Gary Packham. She competed in discus and shot put earning scholarships to the University of Alabama and Arizona State University. “We’re excited to have someone from our school represent us and the U.S. at this level, Packham said. She was a two-time Riverside County athlete of the year. She went on to win the silver medal at the 2010 Pan American competition, and became a three time national champion. At the 2011 World Championships, she finished in first place among American woman weightlifters. Robles has qualified as one of two American women to compete in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London but like many unsung athletes, her road to greatness has been paved with poverty. Despite being the highest-ranked weightlifter in the US, Robles lives on less than $400 a month, has trouble paying her rent and

female athletes who are traditionally portrayed in the press as beauty queens, like tennis star Maria Sharapova. “You can get that sponsorship if you’re a super-built guy or a girl who looks good in a bikini, but not if you’re a girl who’s built like a guy,” she said in previously published reports. To make matters even harder for Robles, she has a deformity in her arm known as Madelung’s deformity, which results in an ulna that is shorter than normal and crooked. That deformity leads to significant pain during lifts, and she treats the pain with simple first-aid remedies such as wrist wraps and over-thecounter warming creams. Robles is a fabulous athlete, but outside the world of weightlifting, no one knows her name. And even though she’s the America’s best chance at an Olympic medal, she’ll probably continue to struggle with finances. The 23-year-old DHS native stands 5 feet, 10.5 inches tall and weighs 275 pound. She became the highest ranked weightlifter in the country last year after placing 11th at the world championships, beating out every male and female American on the roster. On a good day, she can lift more than 560 pounds or the size of an average tiger.

Sarah Robles competing at Olympic Trials

Sarah Robles Traditionally, male weightlifters can earn sponsorship deals for nutritional supplements because their strong, ripped bodies translate well in the press. However, female weightlifters are viewed just the opposite, as bulky, malelooking women and not the image advertisers want to reflect in their products. Luckily for Robles, being on an Olympic team means she doesn’t have to pay for travel, food or lodging while competing in London. And luckily, Procter & Gamble granted her mother, Joy, a special grant for Olympic parents in need of funding so she could watch her daughter compete. “When I was two, I helped my mom put away groceries. I chose to carry the 12 pack of sodas in. I was tipping over to one side so my mom gave me another 12 pack to balance me out. It was that day, my mom knew I was strong,” Robles said on her Facebook page. Robles see herself teaching Physical Education in public schools after her weightlifting career ends. She has a Twitter account with more than 350 followers and a Facebook page where her favorite quote is: “Beauty is strength.” She’s hoping that mantra will catch the attention of a sports sponsor so she can stop worrying about paying her rent. Robles did receive one sponsorship from Solve Media. “Being a female weightlifter and Olympian comes with a variety of challenges,” said Robles on the advertising firm’s website. “But everyday I persevere to lift more, become stronger and change the perception of women’s weightlifting. Having a sponsor that supports my quest for gold and greater awareness around my sport is amazing, and that’s why I am excited to have Solve Media on my team.”. Living Longer

Radioactivity: Bad? Good? Or Very Necessary? By Art Kunkin A major component of my present lifeextension program is the preparation and eating of what I call a “Magic Apple” once a week. I have been eating such an apple weekly for the past five years. It is the culmination of a laboratory research project and study of life-extension techniques that became my full-time occupation in 1980. My goal is to live for hundreds of years. I want to live that long only if I can do so in good health and with sufficient wealth to ensure a happy life. I am inviting a limited number of locals living nearby in the California desert to also have their own apple a week. Do you want to be one of these fortunate people? My unique life-extension program includes eating a “Magic Apple” once a week, avoiding the harmful minerals in tap water that clog up the internal channels of the body by using distilled water and natural plant juices, a variety of consciousness-raising and “brain-rewiring” techniques to increase self-actualization and ability to concentrate, plus physical exercises and Tibetan yoga to keep the body healthy throughout the expanded lifetime I hope to achieve. I believe that any so-called life-extension program which does not include a discussion of radioactivity and its proper use will produce

extremely limited results if any. Diet, food supplements and pharmaceutical chemicals can be useful in helping us to stay alive as much as we do but, in my opinion, will not add much to the extension of our life. Organic life on earth is produced by and dependent on the energy of the Sun. Without that radiation, human, animal or plant life would not exist. The energy coming from the Sun is stored on earth in the slightly more than 100 atomic elements listed in the chemist’s Periodic Table. This Sun energy is particularly available from the unstable heavy elements that fill our atmosphere with radioactive particles and electro-magnetic waves. We live in that sea of radioactivity and depend on that environment much as fish depend on water. Visible light, the electricity contained in the wires of our homes and the batteries of our flashlights, the electrical waves of energy that power our radios and televisions, the electricity that can be found in the voltages of our brains and nervous systems are all manifestations of radioactivity. However, too much energy, too much radioactivity, kills. The related fact is that we age and die because our human bodies have a deficiency of the energy waves and particles we term as radioactive. We have just enough radioactivity for our too-short lives, and then we die.

In simple terms, the radioactive particles and waves in our environment ultimately emanating from our Sun are picked up by a bacterial-like organelle existing in every living cell called mitochondria. These mitochondria use that energy to make a limited amount of a chemical called ATP which is the basic “food” of the living cell, whether human, animal or plant. However, the mitochondria do not produce sufficient ATP for the needs of the living organism. Another way of describing this is that the mitochondria experience a deficiency of energizing radiation. This contributes to the eventual aging of the individual cells and the short life of the entire human organism. Through a simple and very inexpensive procedure, the mitochondria already existing in my “Magic Apples” store a great quantity of the beneficial radioactivity existing in our environment. When eaten, the “Magic Apple” releases that vital life energy to the mitochondria existing in our body and lets them survive for much longer than usual. The usual deficiency of radioactivity in our body is overcome. It’s as simple as that! Until recently, I have had the ability to only make a few apples a week for myself and my immediate family. Frankly, I also was not sure of what I was doing. My 31 years of research had

come to fruition in 2006. I was already 78 years of age. I immediately began eating my “Magic Apples” regularly at that time to stop my own aging process. However, I had not completed enough experimentation at that time to be sure the “Magic Apples” were effective or safe. Given my advanced age, I also was not certain that I had enough productive years ahead of me to get the proof I needed. After five years, my personal experience with this anti-aging program is that my hair is healthily growing at a rate far greater than before, a team of medical doctors have concluded that my real biological age is far less than my chronological age of 84, and my energy and optimism are extremely high. That is why I am looking forward to the actual possibility of living for hundreds of years. Incidentally, for those of you interested in Eastern traditions who have heard about the magical life quality in air termed “Prana,” available only through special breath exercises, I have some particularly valuable news for you. After more than 60 years of study in such disciplines, I have concluded that the mysterious and legendary “Prana” is nothing other than natural radioactivity. In my humble opinion, my “Magic Apples” are just a simple shortcut for taking “Prana” into your body without superficial contortions or tedious breathwork. Enjoy! Live Longer And Happier!

Dining Out

Cello’s, an American Bistro A New Desert Dining Experience by Jackie Devereaux When you first walk into Cello’s in Cathedral City, you’re greeted with a smile by owner Bonnie Barkley as she guides you through her elegant yet cozy four-star restaurant tucked quietly inside an unassuming shopping plaza on Date Palm and Gerald Ford drives. As Barkley seats you at a table and props your back up with raw silk throw pillows, you begin to realize you’re in for a real dining treat. What you may not realize as you’re sipping your signature martini is that Barkley was once a high-powered, corporate executive from Connecticut, and that life changed dramatically shortly after her move to the

special recognition,” Barkley said humbly while serving a frosted martini glass filled with their house specialty drink, “The Cello Drop” made from premium citrus vodka, their signature “Limoncello” aperitif and lemon Torani served with fresh lemon juice. Ah...it tastes like fancy lemonade and goes down way to easily for a vodka martini. I limited myself to one, knowing full well that it packed a lemon punch. Other specialty drink selections include the Caramel Apple, the Very Berry and the Forbidden Chocolate Martini. Another unusual martini called the Arnold All Grown Up, is made with Tea Vodka, (yes, there is such a thing), a splash of peach and sparkling

Instead Barkley was convinced by friends and food admirers to open a catering business so the world could taste her unique and exquisite cuisine. Barkley accepted the challenge and opened the catering side of Cello’s in 2009. Finally, in Jan. 2010, she opened an expanded dining room and quickly became known for world-class food and service. With her corporate Connecticut days behind her, Barkley now spends all her time running the most successful new restaurant in the Valley. In fact, she’s so successful as a restauranteur over the past two and a half years that she’s won awards including, Woman of the Year and the 2011 Restaurant of the Year, both Orion Awards from the Cathedral City Chamber of Commerce. That’s not all. The prestigious Palm Springs Life Magazine recently named Cello’s among the top 10 best new restaurants in the Valley. “We couldn’t be more pleased with this

She chose their signature dish, Chicken Caprese - a lightly breaded chicken breast topped with fresh caprese salad, tomatoes, mozzarella, basil ($18). My husband ordered their Braised Short Ribs ($24) - slow-cooked boneless short ribs in a red wine reduction served with a potato risotto and seasonal fresh vegetables ($24). Both were delicious. The portions were large enough to split, so I took half of my Chicken Caprese home in a doggy-bag and finished it off the next Tom’s “Limoncello” and “Limoncello” tiramisu morning. A DESERT ORIGINAL New gallery satisfies itching for etchings by Michael Craft PALM SPRINGS, CA — When Larry Warnock asks you over to see his etchings, it’s not a pickup line. His collection of some 1500 museum-grade etchings, serigraphs, block prints, monoprints — and virtually every other medium of original graphic art — has moved south to the desert with this San Francisco transplant, who has now opened a local retail gallery space for the summer. Warnock Fine Arts is located inside the existing business of Just Fabulous at 515 N. Palm Canyon Drive in downtown Palm Springs. Warnock is quick to point out that many people associate “prints” with reproductions. “But fine art prints are original artworks that did not previously exist in some other medium.” The editions are always signed and

What’s more, Larry Warnock is the only local member of the International Fine Print Dealers Association, which numbers only 170 members worldwide. Through his travels in Europe, Warnock seeks out award-winning printmakers seldom seen in the United States. His goal is to promote contemporary artists who have developed their own authentic expression and style while mastering the same printmaking skills that have endured for five centuries through such masters as Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt, Picasso and David Hockney. The selection of more than 500 works on view at the gallery represents some of the most accomplished printmakers working today. Artists such as Erik Desmazières (France) and Peter Milton (US) are found in most major museums around the world and have had museum retrospectives in the United States and Europe in recent years. “Bien Loin d’Ici” etching and aquatint by Christian Bozon has brought Warnock’s passion for prints full circle. He explains, “I actually bought my first print at a gallery here in Palm Springs

when I was on vacation 30 years ago, and I still have that print. After I started learning about all the different techniques and styles, I just got hooked.” Once the collecting bug had bitten, one thing led to another. “I was on the board of directors for the Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts at the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts and getting more and more involved in the arts community. At the same time, I had started creating websites for artists I knew. Eventually I saw a path for myself in the business and created my own website.” Warnock has also served on the boards of the California Society of Printmakers and the San Francisco Center for the Book. The upper limit? “Some of the top prints by Peter Milton and Erik Desmazières range from $10,000 to $15,000,” says Warnock. At the Movies

“People Like Us” By Theda Kleinhans Reichman Writer/director Alex Kurtzman knew that his father had been married before and had other children. Separated by age and distance, the siblings never met till he bumped into his sister at a party and she introduced herself. This personal situation was the inspiration for Kurtzman‘s film “People Like Us.” In the film, Sam (Chris Pine, “Star Trek” and “The Lieutenant of Inishmore” at the Mark Taper Forum” in 2011) is a fast talking, wheeler-dealer salesman who finds himself in deep trouble not only with his boss but with the law as well when his latest business scheme goes disastrously wrong. Just as his career takes a nose-dive he learns that his estranged father has died. His girlfriend

Elizabeth Banks and Chris Pine

Michelle Pfeiffer

(Olivia Wilde) convinces him to go home to be with his family in their time of need and he reluctantly agrees. He arrives after the funeral and gets off on the wrong foot with his mother (Michelle Pfeiffer) as soon as he walks in the door. It’s obvious from the start that Sam’s life, personal, emotional and professional, is a total disaster. Then, before he is scheduled to return back East to face the music at work, his father’s lawyer and friend (Philip Baker Hall, stage, film and TV actor who was hilarious as the hard boiled library cop in an episode of TV’s “Seinfeld”) contacts Sam to take care of his father‘s estate. When called upon to fulfill his father’s last wishes Sam soon discovers a startling

secret. It turns out that he has a 30-year old sister Frankie (Elizabeth Banks) and a very disturbed nephew he never knew existed (Michael Hall D‘Addario, making his feature film debut). At first Sam, who desperately needs the money he is supposed to give to Frankie, tries to figure out her connection to his late father and why he would bequeath a box full of cold hard cash to her and not to him or his mother. Curious, angry and bitter, he is reluctant to part with the money. With her address in hand, he sets out to see who this mystery woman is. What happens next, as they begin to bond, propels the story. It seems that the actions and betrayals of the father have had

a very strong negative impact on these two siblings who never knew the other existed. Getting to know one another, however, comes with all sorts of complications. The story is character driven and you really learn to care about this family, from Sam and his mother to Frankie and her son.. The man who connects them all to one another is never seen as the story unfolds. But even though he is not physically present, his influence is felt as the skeletons in his closet are revealed. It turns out that he was a talented man in the music industry who, while respected,

never achieved the fame or fortune his talents merited according to his obituary. But even if we only glimpse him fleetingly at the end of the film, we learn all about him as Sam and Frankie sort out their personal relationship with him and with one another. “People Like Us“ was filmed entirely in Los Angeles, but the locations the filmmakers chose were more hometown L.A. spots. According to Kurtzman, “I’m a native Los Angeleno and my city is not the glitzy, clichéd Los Angeles that I feel like I see on screen in other films.” One of the scenes in the film was shot at Rhino Records, one of the oldest record stores still in existence and famed Hollywood High School which became the setting for the Toluca Park Middle School. And to further add to the home town flavor, old-time eateries like Henry’s Tacos, Cole’s French Dip and Neptune’s Net were also featured. “People Like Us” is a funny, sometimes sad tale about the importance of family connections even if they are off kilter. Rated PG-13 for some drug use, language and brief sexuality.

At the Movies

Astrological Affects by Guru Ren Yogamaya, M.A. E-RYT 500

JULY 18-19 – NEW MOON IN CANCER Most affected are Cancer and All Water Signs. For Cancer: Tolerance, kindness and service to others is the theme of this New Moon. More opportunities may arrive affecting your personal Life. Prepare before the Full Moon arrives by making a list on things that you need to have happen in your Life. It is time for you to change. Depending on where you place your focus, there is where the success ratio begins. Begin with your heart’s intention. For All Signs: Consider if this is the right time to make any announcements; don’t throw caution to the wind. If you are feeling “the shift, ascension symptoms” such as: Mood swings, heightened sensitivity, fatigue, changing sleep patterns, memory loss, and unusual aches and pains – It may be an indication that your body is releasing blocked energy so that it can adjust to and prepare you for a higher vibratory frequency, also known as your Mer-Ka-Ba (Light, Spirit, Body, a vehicle of ascension). Change your perceptions, change your beliefs, what you wish to receive may be gained by you becoming the change first. Continue or consider in your meditation to get in touch with your feminine side, as it is the most powerful and divine energy within you. Further, in your meditations, ask for what you need and not for what you want.

JULY 22 - SUN IN LEO Most Affected is Leo. For Leo: All Sun themes such as warmth, heat, leadership, creativity, wealth, loyalty and showmanship will rule supreme until Aug. 21. A more heightened awareness of courage, selfconfidence, arrogance or humility. The best side of Leo is seen in their regal demeanor, their display of generosity, loyalty, containing their egos graciously, sharing their palatial-like home and their talents. The key is to know when to behave with humility, when to end undue-loyalty and to leave justice in the hands of the Universe. For All Signs: Expressing what is important to you is good as long as you deliver the message with a touch of class. Our urge may be that of creativity and playfulness. When in doubt, remain positive, keep a smile on your face. Celebrate this month with Seva, being of service to others with love. Best Sacred Geometry: Tetrahedron (triangle) Best Yantra: The color Gold.

ON-GOING ASTROLOGICAL AFFECTS: Mercury Retrograde Most Affected are Cancer, Leo, Gemini and Virgo. For All Signs: This transit will continue until Aug. 9. It is best to lay low in matters of communications, travel, and purchases relating to electrical gadgets of communications, the cell phone, the computer, an automobile. The written, spoken and typed word may have to be REwritten, RE-spoken, RE-typed.

Generally, not a good time to commit with your word or sign important documents as when MIR goes direct, in three weeks there will be changes. Some changes for the better, or more likely, for some people, it will fall apart by the next MIR in three months. The return of unfinished business from the past, either your past Life but mostly from this Life, will come back via the telephone, the email, the regular mail, certified mail – requesting closure. Machinery such as computers, most telecommunications devices and automobiles are jumpy, faulty or stalled. If you were born during MIR, some or most of this may not apply to you. For All Signs: With this particular retrograde, it brings the opportunity to remember, to reconnect. We can become too emotional or unwilling to release, to surrender and let go, this being only the worst of it. The best of it can bring us to be sharp, to double or triple check all communications to avoid emotional distress. Also during this particular retrograde, not just Cancer and Leo need be careful. Due to other contributing planetary affects, it’s important to expect the unexpected. Being is more important than “doing.” Do your best to be in a higher conscious realm. Use awareness to avoid unnecessary dramas, disappointments or worse – emotional distress.

The Artist Now Available on Blu-ray and DVD By Theda Kleinhans Reichman “The Artist” won the Academy Award for Best Picture of 2011. It also won the Oscar for Best Actor (Jean Dujardin), Best Musical Score, Best Director and Best Costume Design. The numerous honors don’t end with the Oscars. “The Artist” also won three Golden Globes, received top honors from the Directors Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild and was a top 10 pick on over 200 USA Film Critics’ lists. Even the 10-year-old Jack Russell, Uggie, took home the top honor from the first annual “Golden Collar Awards.” This loving tribute to the magic of the movies also won

his career crash. Of course his adorable dog Uggie remains loyal forever, as does his chauffeur Clifton (James Cromwell). Other stars in the film include Malcolm

Job Seekers Take Note: Have no expectations other than the good possibility that it may only be a temporary thing. Unless you are compelled not to take the job, take it anyway for the experience of it. Try not to get attached and know that it may end by the next MIR. A visit down memory lane is possible – some memories we wish to forget or sweet memories to cherish always - it’s your choice. Best Meditation Mudra: Buddha, (Mercury, thumb over the 5th finger).

Uranus Retrograde Most affected are Aquarius and Cancer. This transit began on July 12 and will continue until Dec. 13. For Aquarius: Your ruling planet is retrograde; the energies are inward. Refrain from displaying negative emotions in front of others. Your best answers will come from within, not always from outside. For Cancer: Expect the unexpected related to your career or business dealings. If you feel that you need help or guidance, ask for it. For All Signs: We will need to review some of your ideas, especially if it involves the off-beat, the unusual or the collective group. The revolution continues a little more quietly; rather than hurling it in the faces of others, it turns inward, reaching for inner freedom from psychological limits. Occupy your inner wisdom, your third-eye.

Jean Dujardin (as George Valentine) and Berenice Bejo (as Peppy Miller). the hearts of the movie-going public. If you haven’t seen this delightful tribute to the silent movie era, now you can since “The Artist” is available on Blu-ray and DVD with Ultra Violet. The setting for “ The Artist” is glamorous Hollywood, circa 1927. Tinseltown then, as now, was a place where dreams are born and movies are made. The top superstar of the day is George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) whose career will soon plummet with the advent of talking pictures. While still a top star, George gives young movie extra Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo) her big break. In no time, with the meteoric popularity of “The Talkies,” movies with sound are all the rage and Valentin’s star crashes as Peppy’s career takes off like a rocket.. The story revolves around George’s problematic marriage, his career and his personal relationships before and after

McDowell as the Butler and John Goodman as studio-head, Al Zimmer. Like the silent films of the era, “The Artist” was filmed in glorious, sharp, crystal clear black and white and, like the films of the day, it’s silent with subtitles. But don’t worry, the film is, and was, one of the most entertaining motion pictures of last year, filled with humor and delightful dog antics thanks to Uggie, as well as romance, pathos and the bond of friendship and loyalty that interlinks the destinies of George and Peppy throughout. “The Artist“ special features include: Blooper Reel, Q & A with the filmmakers and cast, a featurette “Hollywood As A Character: The Locations of “The Artist,“ plus two other featurettes about the film and the artisans --costume and production designers, the cinematographer and composer. Running time is approximately 100 minutes, rated PG-13.

Safety Awareness

Illegal Immigrants and Sanctuary Cities A Sanctuary For Who? By Charles Bennett, Jr. Illegal immigrants, the crime rate and politics is a very sensitive subject for all Americans. More importantly, it’s a subject that needs to be addressed and rectified to ensure the safety of local communities. According to law enforcement reports, some of the most violent criminals at large are illegal immigrants. However in many cities across the country, and specifically here in California, police cannot use their illegal immigraiton status to arrest them and to prevent them from committing further crimes. We hear frequently about illegal immigrants who commit violent crimes that had previously been arrested, sometimes multiple times and never deported. The reason is because of “sanctuary city” policies. These “sanctuary” policies prohibit city employees, including police officers, from reporting immigration violations to federal authorities. These are not laws, but only local policies. However, these policies are a violation of the federal Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigration Responsibility Act of 1996 which requires states and municipalities to cooperate with federal authorities when it comes to immigration enforcement. Further, the California state penal code (834) states that “...every law enforcement agency in California shall fully cooperate with the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service regarding any person who is arrested if he or she is suspected of being present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws.” The state penal code also mandates that any person who is arrested must have their legal status verified. The verification process may include questioning the person regarding his or her date and place of birth, their original entry into the United States, and demanding documentation to indicate his or her legal status. According to published reports, 95 percent of all outstanding homicide warrants in Los Angeles, which totals between 12001500, targets illegal immigrants, and twothirds of all fugitive felony warrants or 17,000 are for illegal immigrants. According to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s office in Feb. 2009, more than 30 weapons were “confiscated during a series of arrests of top members of the Mexican Mafia operating in the Coachella Valley.” Thirteen members of one of Southern California’s most feared gangs, including a 75-year old woman who allegedly collected “taxes” from other gangs in the Mexican Mafia, were arrested and hit with a flurry of narcotics and money laundering charges, according to court papers unsealed from a April 2007 law enforcement sweep.

Guns from 2007 Mexican mafia sweep Unfortunately, in many cases, when our law enforcement officers observe someone who they know is an illegal immigrant or a previously deported illegal immigrant, they can do nothing until the individual breaks the law, and in a lot of cases, it’s when they break the law again or harm another person. These tiny bits of information are a mere fraction of what happens all over California and across the country, including right here in the Coachella Valley. So why is this so important for us? Posted on the Justice for Immigrants Coalition of Inland Southern California website on Feb. 9, 2012, “Mayor Eduardo Garcia has proclaimed the city of Coachella a sanctuary city for undocumented immigrants,” but that isn’t the law. Furthermore, the Coachella Valley Immigration Service and Assistance organization provides assistance to illegal immigrants with criminal histories in the U.S., in order to help them become legal. Looking at it from a law enforcement perspective, they want to solve crimes and protect people from becoming a victim, whether a citizen, legal immigrant, and even a law abiding illegal immigrant. The stated reason for sanctuary policies is that they encourage illegal immigrant crime victims and witnesses to cooperate with police without fear of deportation. If that is the case, then sanctuary policies are unnecessary here in California because the law states that immigration status only becomes an issue for “any person who is arrested.” Not one of us can blame anyone wanting to come here to pursue a better life for themselves and their families, as long as it does not involve criminal activity. For more information, questions or comments on sanctuary cities, contact The Moneé Group at info@themoneegroup.com or call (760) 342-2977. JULY 19 - 25, 2012

Perfecting Your Summer Lawn by Chris Hermann, RLA/ASLA This month we have had the first indications of monsoon season and many of our readers may be struggling with the additional humidity and higher temperatures. The good news is that this type of weather brings grass growth and the best time of year to see significant growth and establishment for your lawn is during the hot summer months.

grass is not shade tolerant and any rye grass left on top of it is serving as the worst type of shade. So how do you get it out of there and get the lawn fixed? First, verticut the lawn now that it is actively growing and remove any of the dead material left behind. When you finish this operation, you will notice some bare areas but don’t be concerned since now that the restriction between

Remember the summer is the absolute best time to put a new lawn in and you can expect it to root down in three to five days. Most people are afraid to put a lawn down during the summer because they are scared that it will shrink up and fade away in the 115-degree temperatures, but that is actually not the case. Warm season lawns are grown optimally between 90-105 degrees and the higher temperatures don’t set it back at all. The first and most important thing is getting a good summer lawn established so you have a base for your rye grass during the winter months. If you have do not have any Bermuda grass, you will not have any rye grass. Rye grass grows extremely well when it has a protective base such as a warm season grass; when it is planted in dirt it will be weak and spindly. Even though it is hot out, a little preventative work now will save you a lot of time this winter. Many of us - including myself - have seen the rye grass finally fade away in the last few areas and because of the length of time it was shaded, you may be seeing a decline in your warm season grass. Remember that Bermuda

grass blades has been removed, you will see growth. Second, fill in the open areas with sand (a washed mortar sand is ok) and give the grass a level surface for the runners to grow. The runners that you see all over your sidewalks and concrete will do the same thing in bare grass areas if treated correctly. Third, don’t be concerned about small areas during transition because the primary growth time for summer grasses will begin once we start to get some humidity. Fourth, fertilize with a 5-15-10 at 10 pounds/1000 SF for Bermuda grass this month and get the proper nutrients back in your lawn. If you have large sections of lawn to fill in or need a quick green up for a party then use 21-0-0 (ammonium sulfate) at five pounds per 1000 SF on Bermuda grass. This is a temporary fix and should not be solely used in lieu of proper nutrients. The best place to find these types of fertilizers is a commercial

Bermuda grass landscape supply store. Fifth, during periods of hot, dry weather watering times will be dependent upon the soil’s ability to hold water . At least 20 total minutes of water is necessary every day. Three shorter cycles may be the best way to minimize run off in heavy clay soils. For sandy soils with faster absorption 15 minutes first thing in the morning and in the evening works best. Sixth, Foliar feed your lawn with 7-77, 16-0-4, and 4-0-6 to maintain good leaf color and to grow good roots. West Coast Turf recommends switching between four fertilizer types each month to ensure proper nutrient balance and great lawn

color. (Example: June 5-15-10, July 7-7-7, August 16-0-4, September 4-0-6, October 5-15-10 with the overseed.) Seventh, if you have large dead spots in your lawn that are three feet or more apart then you should cut out the area in a square and lay sod in those spots. The new sod will require you water it three to four times a day for a month but hand watering will be fine. Cut it out square and larger than needed to keep the area clean and the edges nice. Eighth, if you’re suffering from run off or your soil is extremely compacted, it is a great time to run an aerifier over the lawn. You can simply mow up the plugs when you’re finished and leave the holes open. Ninth, if at all possible, give your lawn 100 days of no competition with rye grass before you start the over seeding process this fall. In other words if you plan on reseeding mid-October, now is the time to get your summer lawn fully established. And finally, the tenth thing to do is to remember the summer is the absolute best time to put a new lawn in and you can expect it to root down in three to five days. The grass will probably turn brown right after it goes down but that is because the root system has been cut off and once the grass takes hold in the ground it greens back quickly. Until next week!
