State Legislators Meet in Coachella Helping Young Men of Color–and California–Thrive COACHELLA, CA. — California state legislators gathered in Coachella for a fifth hearing investigating ways to improve the lives of young men of color in the state last Friday, June 29. Experts from the Coachella Valley and region testified on ways to prepare young men for the workforce and establish commonsense law enforcement policies. “The Coachella Valley’s future prosperity and health depends on all members of the community having a fair chance to thrive and succeed. But today, boys and young men of color face unique and significant barriers to their health and economic well-being,” said Elizabeth R. Toledo, Hub Manager of Building Healthy Communities, Eastern Coachella Valley. “That’s why community leaders in Coachella are pioneering approaches to help young men overcome those barriers to lead successful lives.” Assemblymembers also participated in a local site tour before the hearing to experience firsthand the barriers facing boys and young men of color and visit some of Coachella’s most promising programs helping youth succeed. Stops included the Mecca Boys & Girls Club, Latino Commission Center and RAICES Art Lab, where they received presentations from youth and program leaders. The California Assembly’s Select Committee on the Status of Boys and Men of Color, which was formed by Speaker John Pérez at the request of the Chair, Assemblymember Sandré Swanson, and includes Assemblymember V. Manuel Pérez of Coachella, seeks to harness the promise and lessons from the frontlines of the Coachella Valley’s most successful and innovative policies and programs.

Promising approaches in Coachella have helped inform statewide policy priorities to eliminate obstacles for boys and young men of color. Examples of Coachella’s success include Coachella Valley Economic Partnership’s Pathways to Success program, which has enabled young men of color to attend college through its scholarship and mentoring programs. Coachella’s Center for Employment Training provides young men of color with training and life skills so they are prepared to join and contribute to the local and state economy. “Today’s hearing and testimony highlighted the local initiatives and opportunities that tap the potential of boys and young men of color to make lasting contributions – whether it’s making our neighborhoods safer or strengthening our state and global economy,” said Assemblymember V. Manuel Pérez. “That is why we are encouraging greater investment in programs that have been proven to work at the local level.” The hearing in Coachella is the fifth in a year-long series of hearings conducted by the California Assembly’s Select Committee on the Status of Boys and Men of Color. The Select Committee will hold a final hearing in Sacramento on August 8 to share its overall findings and policy recommendations. Research conducted by the RAND Corporation, PolicyLink and Drexel University found that African-American and Latino boys and young men are much more likely to experience poor health outcomes than white boys and young men. Most of these differences in health are directly related to the communities where they grow up. “The future of California is tied to the

future of boys and young men of color,” said Dr. Robert Ross, President and CEO of The California Endowment. “We know that health happens in our neighborhoods and in our schools, therefore we must work together to ensure every one of these boys and young men has the resources to live a long, healthy and productive life.” Investing in young men of color can reap huge dividends for California. According to a 2007 study by the California Dropout Research Project at UC Santa Barbara, African-American and Latino men graduating high school generate $681,130 and $451,360 more per person, respectively, in additional dollars for the state over the course of their lives than those who do not graduate high school. This is due to increased tax revenue and economic productivity as well as decreased costs associated with poor health or incarceration. “The role that place and race play in the long-term health and well-being of boys and men of color in California – and across the nation – cannot be underestimated,” said PolicyLink Associate Director Rubén Lizardo. “Leaders participating in these hearings are unanimous in their efforts to transform California and make the investments needed for this vulnerable population of youth to truly thrive and succeed.” Many organizations who have worked on the issues facing young men of color for years expressed support for the committee and its ability to elevate these issues, including: Building Healthy Communities, RAICES Cultura, Californians for Justice, Boys and Girls Club of Coachella Valley, Inland Congregations United for Change, Center for Employment Training.

The Star’s Desert “Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the mid-day sun.” by Frances Allen This saying never has more meaning than in the Desert during July. That’s when, with temperatures in the oneteens, the Pegasus Riding Academy for the Handicapped and the Humane Society of the Desert present their annual joint fundraiser luncheon, “Pets On Parade.” The event, held at the animal-friendly Doral Desert Princess Resort in Cathedral City, awards prizes in various animal categories and is eagerly attended by proud pet owners numbering more than 500, along with their significant others. This year, Pets On Parade will be held Sunday, July 15, and is slated to be the Desert’s mid-summer’s “must-attend” sold out event. Tickets and more information are available by calling (760) 770-0424 or (760) 322-3465.

Desert Profiles Movie-star handsome, Scott Hines, the mayor of Rancho Mirage, grinned comfortably as he welcomed us into his City Hall office for the first in a series of Desert Star Weekly profiles on the outstanding men and woman of the Desert; those local dynamos who daily commit their time and treasure to improve the quality of life in the Coachella Valley. Not surprisingly there was a practiced ease about him; this former Air Force Major and Latin American-based intelligence operative was used to dealing with the media … he had honed his skills briefing generals. Hines is the youngest of Rancho Mirage’s five City Council members and is now serving a rotating one year term as Mayor. As the youngest member of what previously was perceived as a ‘good, old men’s club’ Hines had to overcome less than unanimous approval. He won his council

gateway to Rancho Mirage. Known as “Section 19” this development will feature high-end retail shops and restaurants, offices and luxury residential units in an open, planned, meandering setting that will rival The Grove in Los Angeles. When he is not attending to city business Hines enjoys camping with his children and serving as President and Chief Operating Officer of World Education University, an institution of higher learning that believes “Education Should Be Free.” Imagine that, Scott Hines does; and, as he has shown by his service on the city council, if it can be imagined, Hines can find innovative ways to get it done. Scott Hines, Mayor of Rancho Mirage seat in April 2010 by just 11 votes, but his diligence in analyzing the issues and finding solutions has won over many converts. For example, Hines, while researching the city’s Municipal Code, found that by making a minor adjustment to how the city’s streets are painted, dedicated bike lanes could be added at no additional expense. In an achievement he is particularly proud of, 60 percent of Rancho Mirage streets now have the safety feature of marked bicycle lanes. Guiding a city that has a multi-million dollar surplus, Hines is concerned that the city not expand beyond its tax base, arguing for balanced real estate development. He points out it brings in relatively little revenue to the city with commercial business, whose payment of sales taxes go almost directly into the city’s coffers. Therefore, according to Hines, the city is in the development stage of a major multiple-use project on land adjacent to the Agua Caliente Casino at the northern

What happened to the Ritz? It’s been called “The Dream on the Hill,” “A Black Hole” and from the numerous contractors and construction workers who haven’t been paid, comments far too unprintable to mention here. The object of all this attention: The RitzCarlton Rancho Mirage, unquestionably the most expensive white elephant ever to take form in the Coachella Valley. Many years ago, the City of Rancho Mirage boasted that it had the only six-star luxury hotel in the Valley. That was the RitzCarlton. Then the “Ritz,” (as the locals called it), was sold and the new owners named the still six-star property, “The Lodge at Rancho Mirage.” Later, about a year before the debacle at Lehman Brothers that heralded in an era of Wall Street woes, the Lodge was sold again, with the new owners planning to use money borrowed from Lehman Brothers and others to tear down and renovate the property to a level of luxuriousness far beyond its former glory. But a funny thing happened on the way to the re-Grand Opening of the Ritz-

Carlton. The money dried up, building ceased and the project lay dormant. Assurances where given that new financing was eminent and that the construction stoppage was just temporary. Unfortunately, no lender was willing to back these assurances with money, and the Dream on the Hill, fittingly, became a mirage. Fast-forward to a few weeks ago and the announcement that the Rancho Mirage City Council has given the owners of the Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage an ultimatum. Either sell the property, bring in other investors or complete construction of the property by December 2013. There has been optimism about the opening of the Ritz Carlton before … many times before. However, with a new mayor, and a relatively new city council, it is beginning to look as if the city means business. Surf Air

All You Can Fly For A Monthly Fee by Sherman Fridman If the Beach Boys owned an airline it would be only fitting to call it “Surf Air.” Fortunately, these iconic purveyors of the California Sound haven’t given up their dayjobs and are still performing because the Surf Air name is not available. It’s been taken by a group of institutional and private investors, including actor/musician Jared Leto, as the name for a new California-based, all-youcan-fly, membership-only airline that expects to be airborne before the end of this summer, pending government approval. Surf Air’s concept is simple. For a monthly membership fee of about $1,000, members can travel Surf Air’s routes as many times as they want for the month at no additional cost. That’s the upside, one that is sure to please impatient business and leisure travelers. The downside: don’t expect to be flying on a luxurious Gulfstream V. You will be aboard a six-seat, single turboprop, Pilatus PC-12NG for your nearly 90-minute flight. And you won’t be flying in or out of LAX either, but that may be a good thing. When it receives regulatory approval, Surf Air will initially offer flights between underutilized airports in Palo Alto, Monterey, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Additional cities are being eyed for service, including Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe and Palm Springs. Free wait-list membership applications are now being taken at www.surfair.com for founding memberships, which initiate when Surf Air begins service. Members of this select group of frequent fliers will pay dues three months in advance and, in addition to all regular membership benefits, will receive unlimited complimentary guest passes as well as access to exclusive events and offers. As you might expect, the major airlines are looking askance at Surf Air’s business model, but they are looking.

All You Need is Mud Mud equals beauty; all you need do is connect the dots as certain South Korean cosmetic companies did about 15 years ago and developed what has become internationally known as one of the dirtiest events on the planet - the Mud Festival at Daecheon Beach. The event attracts more than two million visitors annually to experience the physical and psychological benefits of mud. Daecheon Beach, in the South Korean city of Boryeong, is famous for its beautifying mud, which is rich in minerals and used in the manufacture of cosmetics. The beach also boasts having the only shell-powdered sandy beach in the Asian region, allowing visitors to experience the local mud while bathing in the sea at virtually the same time. It is a way, Mud Festival organizers claim, for participants to free themselves from their daily routine and, while putting mud all over their bodies, meeting new people as they break down the barriers of age, nationality, race and have fun together. This year’s festival runs from July 14 - 24,

which gives plenty of time to enjoy the mud pools, body-painting with colored mud, a mud prison (I guess you’re locked up until it rains) and mud skiing competitions. For those less adventurous there is live entertainment to enjoy and the closing night fireworks display.

Spanish Eyes Half way around the world, the sleepy Spanish town of Bunol, population 9,000,

about 25 miles from Valencia, quadruples in number as up to 40,000 people flock to the city for a week-long festival highlighted by what is billed as “World’s Biggest Food Fight.” Its Spanish name is La Tomatina, and it begins after many large trucks, filled with rotting tomatoes, pull into the Plaza del Pueblo in the center of town. Once the trucks are in position, the firing of water cannons signal the beginning of a massive tomato fight in which the battle is generally every man, or woman, for themselves. After an hour of indiscriminate tomato hurling, the water cannons are fired once again to signal the end of the fight, after which no more tomatoes can be thrown. The cleaning process involves the use of fire trucks to spray down the streets, with the water coming from an ancient Roman aqueduct. Once the tomato pulp is flushed away, the ground is clean due to the acidity of the tomatoes. The visitors don’t fare so well. Some people find their way to the Bunol River and wash up there, while other tourists are hosed down by the local residents. This year’s food fight is on Aug. 29, and one thing is certain: You’ll never look at a bottle of ketchup the same way again.

Music Worth Buying

Beatles’ Legacy Celebrated stories ranging from revealing events that played out when the members of the band were teens just starting out in Liverpool to seminal events that played out during the height of Beatlemania and incidents involving John, Paul, George and Ringo following the breakup of the group. Brian Wilson, Susanna Hoffs, Justin Hayward, Art Garfunkel, Graham Nash and Denny Laine (of Moody Blues and Paul McCartney & Wings fame) provide some of the best moments in the wonderful film. It is bittersweet to see recently-lost names such as Monkees singer Davy Jones, Andrew Gold, one-time Capitol Records president Alan Livingston and Norman “Hurricane” Smith featured in some of their last interviews, but that sobering element of loss enhances the importance of Swirsky’s winning film.

Comprehensive, Compassionate Care Helping Seniors Transition to a More Fulfilled Life PALM DESERT, CA – What’s in a name? When it comes to the Center for Geropsychiatry at Eisenhower Medical Center, this clinical moniker doesn’t do justice to the compassionate and supportive care this unique program offers seniors who are struggling with anxiety, depression or other mental health issues. Now a year old, this program — the only one of its kind in the desert — is a comprehensive and compassionate inpatient center that provides an extraordinary level of personalized care and support exclusively for people aged 65 and older who need help returning to a healthier mental and physical state. The 12-bed unit, all private rooms, provides a safe and confidential setting in which patients are carefully evaluated and take part in a range of daily therapeutic activities designed to help them resolve the issues that prevent them from living a happy, healthy lifestyle. The average length of stay at the center is six to ten days, and it is covered by most major health plans including Medicare, HMOs, private health insurance plans and private pay. “The buzzword for our approach is biopsychosocial,” says Anthony Bassanelli, MD, Medical Director, Eisenhower Center for Geropsychiatry. “It means we look at the whole person, and we have an entire team of

Geropsychiatry at Eisenhower Medical Center experts who are focused on each individual’s unique situation and needs.” These experts include a psychiatrist, registered nurse, social worker and recreational therapist who meet with the patient as a team every day. Family members, significant others or care providers are frequently invited to attend these daily review sessions.

“This level of attentiveness is unique,” Dr. Bassanelli notes. “Other treatment programs generally only review patients’ progress weekly. We’re very much aware of what’s going on with each patient. We feel it’s imperative because these patients often have a complicated medical history and their condition can change quickly. “We definitely look at medical problems along with mental health issues.” We conduct a complete physical exam and facilitate access to any specialty care that may be needed.” During their stay, patients are also seen by their own primary care physician or an internist who specializes in geriatric medicine. E ach patient is also given a comprehensive screening test called the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA©) upon admission. “It’s a tool that gives us a handle on any problems a patient might be having with concentration, attention, memory and language, for example,” explains Dr. Bassanelli. “It lets us know if someone is capable of living independently, managing medications and being in charge of their own finances.” “Families look to us for answers about what’s happening with their spouse, significant other or parent,” he adds. “With this objective test, we can quantify and understand what we’re dealing with and formulate an appropriate treatment plan.” “During their stay, patients participate in a daily program of therapeutic group activities, designed to enhance health, positive coping skills, independence and quality of life. Dining is family-style to encourage socialization and to decrease isolation,” notes Maura Fisher, Director, Eisenhower Center for Geropsychiatry. “There is still a stigma about psychiatry, particularly among seniors,” Dr. Bassanelli acknowledges. “But what we are offering is

a supportive network of resources to help seniors feel less alone and to learn new ways of doing things to help them feel more fulfilled and connected.” This supportive network doesn’t end when the patient leaves the Center. “We develop a comprehensive after-care plan, working closely with the patient and family to identify what the patient is capable of doing at home, if they can safely return there and offer additional support such as home health care or community resources. “Our discharge plan includes medical as well as mental health follow-up, along with any necessary physical or occupational therapy and specialty care.” “Notably, our program is completely voluntary, and a physician referral is not required. In other words, seniors can admit themselves to this program,” explains Judy Kaye-Cressman, who handles the Center’s community relations. “Family members or even concerned administrators of senior housing or assistedliving facilities may also refer someone they believe would benefit from the Center’s services. All it takes to get started is a phone call.” Each call receives an immediate response. “We can conduct a phone intake (assessment) and have a patient admitted to our Center within two hours,” Fisher notes. “This program is different from anything else out there, and it’s making a positive impact in seniors’ lives,” Dr. Bassanelli adds. “They deserve quality health care, and Eisenhower is here to help make that happen.” “The so-called golden years are often difficult for many people in their 80s or 90s who are living alone, whose families are far away, and whose spouse and close friends are deceased,” said Dr. Bassanelli. “They’re often socially isolated, their nutrition is frequently poor, and there’s likely been some decline in their memory and thinking. “It’s not uncommon for seniors to feel lonely and depressed. Who wouldn’t be in this situation?” he added. “And when you factor in the health issues that come with aging, life can be very hard for many older adults.” Other common scenarios include seniors with a history of depression or bipolar disorder whose condition has worsened with age or perhaps whose medications are no longer effective. Or someone who isn’t feeling or acting “right” — the individual may be anxious, or family members are concerned that they’re depressed or perhaps experiencing the early stages of dementia. For many, aging often presents a range of complex issues. Living Longer

Everyone Wants to Live Longer by Jackie Devereaux No one wants to die young. It would be insane to think that. As we baby boomers reach 60 years old, we’re learning about ways to extend our life span to 100 years and beyond! Art Kunkin, the founder/publisher/editor of the notorious Los Angeles Free Press, believes people can live to be 200 years old and much older. He is so convinced about he can live that long that he’s mailed invitations with a Save the Date notice to attend his 200 birthday party which is scheduled to take place in the year 2108. I hope to attend. Kunkin and his infamous group of merry pranksters at the LA Free Press are credited with publicizing a series of counter-culture, public protests against the war in Vietnam during the late 1960s and early 1970s. These days, Kunkin is a featured writer for this publication with his weekly “Living Longer” columns. He lives in Joshua Tree and has dedicated his golden years to studying the art and science of alchemy, and particularly the process of extending life. Kunkin, an 84-year-young man from the Joshua Tree Retreat Center, has been experimenting on himself for the past four

years in ways to extend life. One alchemical technique he developed after year of studying is to eat radiated apples. He stores freshly ripe apples in glass jars, sitting on top of numerous radioactive rocks from mines like the Merry Widow’s Mine in Montana. The apples sit there for about a week, then he eats one a day until he replaces the eaten apples with new ones.

by the spectacular Aurora Borealis light shows witnessed and photographed by residents in Scandinavian countries as well as those across Russia and Canada. Kunkin would say your chances of reaching age 100 are much better than you think, especially if you follow a few simple rules. For starters, get plenty of sleep. At least eight hours or more a night are reported by people over 80

We are surrounded by electromagnetic energy from the high-voltage power lines and wind mill turbines that crisscross over the entire Coachella Valley Kunkin admits to eating those radioactive apples since 2008. I have seen his otherwise gray hair grow back long and dark colored over the past four years. He will be the first to tell you that all people on the planet live in a sea of radioactivity much like fish swimming in the ocean. We are surrounded by electromagnetic energy from the high-voltage power lines and wind mill turbines that crisscross over the entire Coachella Valley. We are surrounded by solar particles hitting the Earth, evidenced

as a reason for their longevity. The second most important rule is to improve your diet. A new study released by UnitedHealthcare asked centenarians and baby boomers the secrets of aging success and evaluated what steps they are taking to celebrate a 100th birthday. According to their findings, 71 percent of those surveyed over 100 said they get eight hours or more of sleep each night while only 38 percent of baby-boomers said they get the same amount of rest. When it comes to eating right, 81 percent of centenarians said they regularly

eat a balanced meal, compared with just over 68 percent of the baby-boomers. In a report entitled,“100@100 Survey,” some startling numbers rise. As of 2010, the United States had an estimated 72,000 centenarians, according to the Census Bureau. By the year 2050, that number is expected to reach more than 600,000. Meanwhile, an estimated 10,000 baby-boomers will turn 65 each and every day for the next decade. Who reaches 100? Centenarians claim they have close social interactions, that they exercise and take part in some kind of spiritual activity regularly. More than 67 percent said they pray or meditate and 51 percent said they exercise almost daily. Diet, sleep and exercise are the three areas where baby boomers fall short when compared to centenarians. However, they do report they are more active is the workplace. More than three-quarters of surveyed baby boomers or 76 percent said they work at a job or hobby almost every day. Only 16 percent of centenarians report workplace activity. If you want to live longer, get lots of sleep, exercise, interact with people and make a spiritual connection with the God of your choosing. Art Kunkin’s column will return next week.

Poolside Designs by Chris Hermann, RLA/ASLA This week’s article will focus on ideas about planting around pool areas which are some of the most difficult places to create a low maintenance and attractive design. Plants have several difficult conditions to overcome such as reflected light, hot concrete, chlorine splash, and tight spaces that limit root growth. Most of our landscape design projects include the layout of the entire outdoor environment - swimming pools, spas, firepits, gazebos and outdoor kitchens. The selection of appropriate low maintenance materials will reduce constant problems with sweeping, raking and cleaning. All plants will produce some litter, but there are some plants that are less messy than others and these are the ones we will be addressing. The pool and spa locations are typically arranged where the primary view from the home reveals the sound and sight of water. That view is enhanced with dramatic form, texture, scale and color in plant material. We try to avoid using plants with thorns and high litter; however, there are times that a bougainvillea is the perfect choice for a particular location and the homeowner is willing to put up with the mess. No pool area is complete in the desert without a palm tree. Some newer selections include Sabal minor (Sabal palm), Brahea edulis (Guadalupe Island palm), and Brahea armata (Mexican blue palm). All are slow growing and typically remain under 20 feet, with the exception being Sabal palm. Tried and true is Washingtonia filifera or the famous California fan palm. It grows slowly to 35 to 40 feet, with a massive trunk up to 3-1/2 feet in diameter. Washingtonia robusta otherwise known as the Mexican fan palm, has a slender, 18-inch trunk that can reach 50 to 75 feet high. This height makes it a skyline tree and should only be used in large-scale gardens. There are also some hybrid varieties available today with skinned trunks that are very attractive. In addition the always reliable Chamaerops humilis commonly known as

Ornamental grasses are at home around pools, especially as a backdrop. the Mediterranean fan palm and Chamaerops humilis “Blue”, the Blue Mediterranean fan palm are both great choices for additional foliage interest and close up viewing. It is typically multi-trunked growing 8 to 12 feet high. Growth is slow. Welcome the pups - offshoot plants - that fill in around the base. Leave them on the palm to encourage growth to develop more

vertically. These are also excellent choices for growing palms in containers. Although palms are popular, there are a number of other evergreen trees and shrubs that are attractive around pools. Consider Acacia aneura or Acacia craspedocarpa, two low-litter species from Australia. Acacia willardiana (palo blanco) is native to Mexico. It will accept reflected sunlight and heat near pools and adds a graceful, weeping-willowlike feel, as does Callistemon viminalis (weeping bottle-brush). Olneya tesota (desert ironwood), Sophora secundiflora (Texas mountain laurel), and Pistacia lentiscus (evergreen pistachio) are additional trees to consider for poolside plantings. Creeping ground covers that are both functional and visually appealing are good choices around pools. These plants will help retain the soil from falling into the pools and if some taller accent plants are added for additional visual interest the overall feel of the space is enhanced. The addition of a few boulders, sculpture or statuary can be a perfect final touch. The groundcover selections we suggest for poolside landscapes include Chrysactinia Mexicana (damianita), Convolvulus cneorum (silver

bush morning glory), Oenothera stubbeii (Saltillo primrose), Ruellia brittoniana ‘Katie’ (dwarf ruellia), and the creeping evergreen herbs: Rosmarinus officinalis ‘Prostratus’ (prostrate rosemary), and Teucrium chamaedrys ‘Prostratum’ (prostrate germander). Ornamental grasses are at home around pools, especially as a backdrop. Consider Muhlenbergia species, which are attractive almost year-round and are low-litter plants. Pennisetum rubrum has interesting color for contrast and Stipa (Mexican Feather Grass) can be a nice choice. Another newer variety that is being grown for our desert environment is Rusellia equisetiformis (coral fountain grass). This shrubs soft foliage and brilliant coral to pink flowers are a dramatic choice. Additionally, there is a hybrid Rusellia equisetiformis called “St. Elmo’s Fire” which produces very attractive red flowers. High-litter plants to avoid include oleander, bougainvillea, pyracantha, eucalyptus, ash, pines, privet, mesquite and palo verde. If you want to include these plants for shade, screening, or other functions, try to place them 25 to 35 feet away, ideally on the downwind side of the pool. Low voltage, night lighting on palms and bold accent plants will enhance the pool landscape. The play of light reflections on plants and water add to the beauty of the scene. Until next week! Happy gardening!

signature dishes plus many exciting new offerings. In the Capri tradition, Rancho Mirage, Ca - Michael’s Pizzeria, known for its authentic Napolistyle pizza baked at 850 degrees for 90 seconds and served whole instead of sliced, will open its second location at The River at Rancho Mirage on July 9. The restaurant will be open daily from 11am for lunch and dinner. When longtime Rancho Mirage homeowner Michael Dene decided to launch Michael’s Pizzeria last year near his primary residence in Long Beach, California, he wanted guests to enjoy an authentic experience. His first task was to ship the chef off to the oldest pizzeria in Naples, Italy, to learn the art of making pizza as it was intended--using handtossed dough made from the finest flour then topped with fresh sauces, freshly plucked herbs and homemade mozzarella then baked at a scorching 850 degrees in a wood-fired oven for 90 seconds.

contemporary surroundings with warm wood floors, a palette of soothing earth tones, and modern globed pendants that softly illuminate the space. Cantaloupe-hued chairs offer a nice contrast against the white marble tables where monogrammed flatware and dishes welcome guests. Glass bottles filled with water—flat or sparkling—are set on each table allowing diners to replenish their cups whenever the urge may strike. The exhibition kitchen, where the wood-burning oven will be cured for seven days prior to its July 9 opening, sets the stage for the culinary show that unfolds with each meal. The chef can be seen plying and tossing the freshly-made dough, hand-slicing the various housemade toppings, and pulling the finished pies from the oven. Aside from pizza, Michael’s Pizzeria also offers a selection of antipasti, salads, charcuterie, cheese, and puccias (pronounced poo-chas) – Italian flatbread sandwiches made from the same hand-tossed dough as the pizza and filled with such edibles as prosciutto, mozzarella, arugula and more. Michael’s also features beer along with a suggested wine pairing list that takes the guess work out of choosing the best vintage to pair with the various pizzas. Michael’s Pizzeria is located at The River at Rancho Mirage on Highway 111 at Bob Hope Drive and is open year-round Sunday-Thursday from 11am to 10pm; until 11pm Friday and Saturday. There was no place to go for that experience, and I feel as if Michael’s Pizzeria has filled a culinary void. We pride ourselves on everything being made in-house, from our sauces to our cheeses. Karen and Tony Barone Masters of Pop Art by Jackie Devereaux Rancho Mirage, CA - There are a lot of art galleries throughout the Valley, and a lot of local artists too. All different kinds can be found living between Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley, to Desert Hot Springs and Palm Springs all the way down to the Salton Sea. I don’t care which neighborhood you look in, you’ll find some very eclectic, talented and world-famous artists in our midst. I put the word out among folks “in the know” that I’m looking for local artists to profile each week. It didn’t take long for the names of Karen and Tony Barone to pop up, and there’s plenty of reasons why. A number of Barone art works can be found popping up all over the valley. On El Paseo they have “R Hero,” a purple Dalmatian dog sculpture standing 6-feet, 2-inches tall. It is permanently installed in front of the Historical Society of Palm Desert building which was the original fire station for the area. “R. Hero” was sold for $15,000 through the couple’s Art Adoption program which states that the buyer donate the sculpture back to a city. They originally wanted the sculpture to be placed in front of Palm Desert’s Fire Station 33 on Town Center Way. However, the city’s Art in Public Places Commission chose the Historical Society building as a more appropriate site. The Barone’s are very proud that thousands of school kids tour the site each year and enjoy their art. They have produced a plethora of artwork during their decades together with many pieces on exhibit at local galleries around town and around the world.

titled, “The Queen’s Pudding,” containing background colors from the previous canvas. The backgrounds shift, starts and stops without acknowledging the boundaries of each of the six 8-foot sections and one 6-foot section. Each canvas is part of the whole; however, each canvas is a completed work in itself – it can stand alone, much like a slice or two of bread remains a complete entity when cut away from a loaf. “The Queen’s Pudding” is intended to be exhibited or acquired as a single entity. However, each segment can be purchased individually or acquired in 2, 3, or 4 pieces under the condition that when it tours, it all tours together on a loan back basis, he said. However, each of the 8-foot and 6-foot canvases which make up the 54 foot long work has its own subject and title. They may be hung individually or as a diptych or a triptych. “We envision the canvases stacked, one above the other, creating an 8 foot by 8 foot painting,” he said.

“We just completed a series of paintings under the masthead, ‘The Queen’s Pudding,’ inspired by a Victorian English tale which told of a pudding so delicious that when it was served to the Queen she decreed a piece of this fine pudding be brought forward in the making of each pudding thereafter,” said Tony Barone from his Rancho Mirage home. “In effect, the pudding served today to the current Queen is the same original pudding,” Barone said. Like the Victorian Queen’s pudding, each successive canvas in the 54 foot painting

“Another exciting project is that we will be the curators for UCR Palm Desert Campus for the 2012/2013 season. Based on the success of last year’s opening show at the University where we were co-curators, we were asked to now curate the entire coming season, Karen Barone said. “We were honored by the request and have agreed to commit ourselves for three diverse and hopefully exciting exhibitions,” she said. When asked who does what artwork on the paintings or sculptures, their collective response in unison was, “We work together.” And together they are. “We don’t spend more an hour away from each other,” she said, while standing in the kitchen toasting vegan approved bread for our lunch. “No girls night out,” I asked? “Oh, no, I couldn’t image doing anything without Tony. We’re always together. We’ve been together ever since we met,” she said. They met decades ago on a commuter train in Chicago. Tony spotted Karen immediately and drew a portrait to impress her. She pretended to ignore him at first because they were both married to other people. But the sparks flew during that first day on the train and they both made sure to catch the same train each day thereafter. Before long, it was all over with the other marriage partners. “We’ve been inseparable ever since.” And ever since means a number of decades and still counting. They relocated from Chicago to the desert, “decades ago” leaving their meat-eating days behind them. The Barones both follow a healthy, meatless, vegan-style diet. They both

Our homemade lunch consisted of a lovely, fresh arugula, tomato, basil, olive oil and garlic salad with that toasted vegan approved bread tossed and served on some elegant Barone plates. While Tony told stories about their cocreator artistic forms, Karen displayed an uncanny memory for names, far off dates of events, places, hotels, with minor characters in stories, and more importantly, she spelled everyone’s named correctly. She is truly an

amazing woman who’s eye make-up equals her photographic memory. Tony said, “She’s perfect for me because I can’t remember anything. What’s your name again?” Karen quickly piped up, “Jackie Devereaux,” and spelled my name out loud correctly. Karen and Tony Barone’s art can be found at the Blue Print Green Gallery in Palm Springs. Curator Robin Quinta said he will offer their cocktail tables, sculptures, fine art and other eclectic pieces at his gallery. The Blue Print Green Gallery is located at 386 N. Palm Canyon. Disney Pixar’s “Brave” Visually Stunning By Theda Kleinhans Reichman You don’t have to be Scottish to enjoy Disney Pixar’s newest film “Brave,“ a medieval tale about Merida, a spirited, willful, red haired princess who gallops through the highlands atop her loyal horse and companion, Angus. Angus allows Merida (voice of Kelly MacDonald) to escape the formalities of the castle where she’s expected to act like a lady by her mother, Queen Elinor (voiced by Emma Thompson). But Merida is far more like her highland warrior father King Fergus (voiced by Billy Connolly) and likes to ride free with her flowing mane of red hair blowing in the wind. When she’s on her own she proves to be an amazing archer, always hitting the mark. Like her father, she is truly a wild, heroic child, but once she becomes a headstrong teenager her mother has more ladylike plans for her only daughter. These plans include marrying the son of a highland chieftain whether feisty Merida is ready and willing to wed or not. Based on an original story by Breda Chapman, who co-directed and co-wrote the script with director Mark Andrews,

“Brave” is a very personal story about a child-parent clash of wills that eventually involves a magical curse that will change everyone’s lives. In creating the plot each director drew upon experiences with their own families, blending those ideas with their knowledge of Scottish heritage and personal admiration for that land. Together they weave a tale of family love and angst combined with old Scottish history from medieval times when witches thrived and places like Stonehenge were built in the misty, shrouded forests. According to “Brave” co-director, Mark Andrews, “The main theme of the film is being brave, finding the courage to let go. Merida is a very brave character--she climbs cliffs, shoots arrows, fights bears--but it’s really that bravery of the heart that’s the hardest.” And even though the story is centered on a princess with whom young girls can relate, Merida has three mischievous brothers, triplets no less, who add humor and chaos to castle life. Boys will relate to their naughty, yet lovable boyhood behavior and pranks. Brave boys and girls will also thrill to the clashes between humans and bears like the

The character Merida from the movie “Brave” terrifying, ferocious bear Mor’du. Fergus lost his leg to the beast and now the king sports his wooden peg leg with pride, delighting in telling everyone about his heroic battle of long ago with that demon bear. Like all of the Pixar films that came before, the storytelling works on multiple levels. Many jokes and insights will appeal to adult sensibilities while the clashes between humans and nature, man and beast, will thrill the kid and adventurer in all of us. The story is a coming of age tale about becoming your own person rather than finding prince charming. In fact the Scottish sons of the chieftains are more hilarious than handsome or appealing. Over the course of 26 years and 12 groundbreaking features like “Wall-E,” “Toy Story I, II & III,” and the totally delightful “Ratatouille” to name but a few, Pixar animators have raised the bar for animated storytelling. Their artists and technicians are creative magicians of the art form when it comes to cinematography, lighting and photography and in “Brave” they have

created the highlands right down to the heather on the hills and each hair on the bears and that trusty steed Angus are vividly real and authentically rendered. If you’re traveling into Los Angeles from through Aug. 12, go to the film at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, where you can enjoy an all new live stage show featuring favorite Disney and Pixar characters. The performers include singers and dancers as well as Disney princesses Belle, Cinderella and Snow White who perform along with Pixar’s first princess, Merida. For the show’s finale they are joined by kilted highland dancers doing Scottish flings. The show is filled with music and song performed by princesses and Disney. Pixar characters like Mickey, Minnie, Donald Duck and Pluto along with Woody and Buzz Lightyear from Pixar‘s “Toy Story.” Adults and kids alike will have a blast. Lots of fun. Astrological Affects

Movie Reviews

- By Guru Ren Yogamaya, M.A. E-RYT 500

Sun In Cancer:

Life will now begin to be on the mend.

Most Affected are Cancer and all Water Signs. The month is in the sign of Cancer. For Cancer: All Moon themes such as sensitivity, moods, nurturing and stability will rule supreme until July 22. A more heightened awareness of emotions, sensitivity to heat, fondness of food and harmony. The best side of Cancer is seen in their caring demeanor, their display of compassion, dealing with family issues easily, their cozy home and their culinary talents. The key is to know when to let go, to balance your moods, to silence overt emotions at the appropriate time and to leave justice in the hands of the Universe. For All Signs: The Moon shines brighter this month. The divine feminine and the divine masculine energies in all people, nature, in Life, is found in the 2nd Chakra, the sacrum, abdomen, that also represents the element of Water, the sign of Cancer. We may feel more for others and for ourselves, cautious and protective. By using your awareness from divine guidance, the virtues of patience and observances will assist to bring solution to problems and healing. When in doubt stay positive, don’t whine or complain as it will only wear you out, and bring wrinkles and exhaustion. Celebrate this month by having more consideration of family members at home, enjoy water; the pool, the spa, the beach or trying Aquatic Pool Yoga. Best Sacred Geometry: Icosahedron (Water) Best Yantra: The colors Orange or Coral.

Mercury In Leo Most Affected are Leo, Gemini and Virgo. This transit began on June 25 and will continue until August 31. For Leo: With the planet of communications and electrical impulses enters your sign, you may feel a surge of energy moving easily, supporting your communications, travel and gadgetry. The sign of Gemini or Virgo may figure more prominently. Do your presentation(s) before July 12, before Mercury goes retrograde. For Gemini: Expect fire and passion to fuel your ideas and communications. Along with Jupiter and Venus in your sign, everything is expanded; flirting now can mislead others by your words or actions, so be cool, be careful. For Virgo: Your mind may now guide you in a more passionate way. Your presentations may have a grand flair to them. For All Signs: Bold statements and creative ideas come on strong now. The past, retrograde planetary affects dim in comparison to the transformational powers of the Sun; the planet that represents Leo. The Challenge: If you do come on too strong, have no expectations; enjoy the process, and be prepared to explain yourself. The Best: Focus on the positive for best results. Venus Direct - Most affected are Gemini, Libra and Taurus. The Venus retrograde transit began on May 15 and turned direct on June 27. For Gemini: Venus continues direct in your sign until August 7 and brings a better balance or mend to your personal relationships and social interactions. Until July 14 when Mercury goes retro, you are primed to advance and get what you need. For Libra: Hopefully, you did not over-spend. If you did, begin a new budget to repay it. Any disappointments, delays or disagreements in your

Desert Star Weekly

For Taurus: You can now move forward with your romantic or partnership plans as your ruling planet, Venus is once again direct and while Jupiter is in Gemini, it may expand the joy and take your relationships to the next level, the next realm. For All Signs: The planet representing Love, beauty and the senses returns to its’ direct motion. While it may have been challenging for couples, it may have also helped to review the relationship with others, our values, the relationship with ourselves. The best outcome may have been: To have reconnected with some pleasures or certain people from the past, to re-experience, remind us of what didn’t work or to bring closure.

Week of July 5 – July 11: July 3 – Mars Into Libra Most affected are Libra and Aries. This transit will continue until August 23. For Libra: Mars enters your sign infusing more energy into your Life. If you’re not the physical type, you may suddenly feel like joining a gym or start walking on breaks or after work. Or if you are athletic, you may go to the next level up. The good news: Your sexual drive and physical stamina will be heightened and making decisions may become easier. The worst: You may find that you need to practice more patience. Use or consider techniques that help bring calm and balance to your metabolism. The sign of Aries may figure more prominently. For Aries: With other planetary affects involved, this may become a challenging time as you continue to forge ahead. The best is that there may be more flirtatious beauty coming your way. Stay on track. For All Signs: The details in the preparations and going over it again and again from the last eight months has brought us to new liberated heights. New contacts, reaching out to others, fighting for a good cause and finally putting your projects out there for the world to respond to are some accelerated characteristics of this transit. Warning: Please consider in letting go and let God, meaning, leave justice in the hands of the Universe.

July 3 - Full Moon In Capricorn Most affected are Capricorn and All Earth Signs. For Capricorn: The Full Moon is in your sign and may bring an important personal issue into focus. Also, on that date begins an improved climate surrounding your business goals. Any concerns that you have will be illuminated on this date, so consider before you speak.

Hollywood Stinkers Three Bombs, I’m Gone by Jackie Devereaux Are A-List Actors struggling to find good roles in Hollywood? Are there no good scripts anymore? Is Hollywood empty of Academy Award-winning screenwriters? The answer to all three questions must be “Yes.” We couldn’t believe the asinine roles that several highly-paid A-List Actors accepted, and the stupid High Concepts that went with those scripts. It was my birthday over this past weekend and I wanted to go to the movies. My husband picked the Mary Pickford Theater in Cathedral City because it was showing a number of starstudded movies. However, don’t believe the start times on the Web. They’re all wrong. And you can’t call the theater to check. No one answers the phones. You’ll just have to wing it like we did. However, once at the Mary Pickford Theater we found “Moonrise Kingdom,” which looked good from the trailers we saw on TV. It stars Bruce Willis paired with Edward Norton, Frances McDormand and Bill Murray. Surely, this would be good movie. Wrong. After sitting through the first 10 minutes, it became abundantly clear that this movie was a bomb. My husband whispered to me, “Do you like this? It’s awful.” I glanced at him with a look saying, “Let’s give it a couple more minutes.” We agonized through another 10 minutes, then he whispered, “That’s My Boy” is starting right now, pointing to his watch. I agreed, we quietly got up and left - and we weren’t the only ones. I couldn’t believe that my favorite all-time action actor, Bruce Willis, who plays the island cop in “Moonrise Kingdom,” accepted a role in a movie that was not just a bomb, but a big bomb! Adding to that injury is one of my all-time favorite dramatic actors, Edward Norton, who plays the part of an idiot Boy Scout leader who is functionally 13 years old and you get the horrible picture. I guess if you’re a 13-year-old, you might like this movie but then you’re probably not reading this article either. Don’t waste your

For All Signs: Inner needs and outer responsibilities may be the theme of this Full Moon. Tough planetary affects from Uranus and Pluto may bring some chaos or disruption before we can begin anew. Try not to go to extreme with tactics; don’t misuse your power. Everyone has purpose; you are a part of the equation of the future. In your meditation, ask the Universe for guidance, connection and maternal support in assisting you in finding strength to release and to let go of people, places or things that are no longer serving you well in your Life. Best Mantra: AUM. Best Color: Violet or White. Ren Yogamaya is a Yoga teacher registered at the highest level with the Yoga Alliance, a writer, author of, EAT BY COLOR: Foods, Colors and The Chakras. Mark Wahlberg in the movie “Ted”

time or money going to see this one. We walked out of “Moonrise Kingdom” after less than 20 minutes and walked into our next choice: “That’s My Boy” starring Adam Sandler, James Caan and Susan Sarandon. We eagerly hoped for a good comedy but it soon became clear that this movie was a bomb too. I got through the crude sexual content, brief nudity, pervasive language and some childish drug use scenes. But I couldn’t get past the low-brow High Concept of a wayward father showing up at his son’s wedding uninvited. Boring and not funny at all. This movie was a major disappointment even for an Adam Sandler comedy, unless you’re a 13-year-old boy. We ventured out again, and so did some other folks. We gave this movie about 15 to 20 minutes too. Then we moved on to what critics are claiming is the best movie at the box office this week, “TED” starring my favorite Boston hunk, Mark Walhberg. Unfortunately, this movie perturbed us within the first 10 minutes. When the beautiful, wide-eyed co-star Mila Kunis resorted to dialogue about someone “shitting” on the living room floor, we got up and left the theater for good. So did others behind us. It was gross. My husband asked which movie I’d like to try next. I gave up. Three bombs and I’m gone. Thank goodness we only spent $15 on matinee tickets, otherwise I would have been upset by wasting money going to the movies. If you’re thinking about going to the movies this week, do not go to any of these. They’re a waste of time, unless of course, you’re a 13-year-old boy.

Safety Awareness

Child Safety by Charles Bennett Jr. According to the FBI, crimes rise approximately 10 percent in the summer months. Murder rises 16 percent and rape and other violent crimes such as assault and robbery rise by 13 percent. In 2005, there were over 3,000 accidental drowning’s. More than one in four fatal drowning victims are children 14 or younger. Four children require medical attention for water related injuries for every one child who dies. Why are these statistics important? Because kids are on summer break and often times are left home alone due to the fact that many parents work. And as we all remember, summer vacation is full of a lot of time do to nothing. No one wants their child to be a victim of a crime and most parents do not believe that their child would be involved in criminal activity. If peer pressure isn’t enough, it is during the long summer break

that teenagers get into more trouble with drugs and alcohol and get involved with other crimes such as theft and assault. A lot of children are left home alone with older siblings. Parents need to recognize that the older siblings many times are children themselves. In these circumstances, parents should give them strict rules, discuss their responsibilities, and make sure they are very clear and understood. Further, it should be understood by the older siblings that they should not have friends over or leave the house without the parents’ permission. It is suggested that parents who work call and check on their children during the day. Also make sure they have your work and cellular numbers, as well as a family members and even a neighbors. It is also a good idea to insure that those family members and neighbor have all your contact numbers as well.

Advise your children to stay away from pools, lakes, canals and any other unsupervised water locations. Make sure your children know not to open the door for anyone they do not know. Additionally, advise them never to tell anyone that either of the parents are not home, whether at the door or over the phone. Be sure to keep all cleaning products, chemicals and other poisonous products where your children cannot get to them. Make your children are aware of fire safety. It is not a good idea to allow them

to use the stove, oven or BBQ. Insure they know where fire extinguishers are located as well as how to properly use them. Additionally, have a fire evacuation plan posted and understood, including the use of locks and window security bars. Advise your children to stay away from pools, lakes, canals and any other unsupervised water locations. Additionally, it is a good idea to teach your children how to swim and other water safety. Children drown because they are not properly supervised. They tend to wander off without being noticed. More importantly, your children should be familiar with 911 and your home security systems panic and fire/medical emergency features. For more information on child safety and preventing criminal behavior, contact The Moneé Group at info@themoneegroup. com, (760) 342-2977 or contact your local police and fire departments.

Study: Inhaled Cannabis Reduces Symptoms

Chicago Ruling

In Patients With Treatment-Resistant Multiple Sclerosis

No Longer Arrestable Offense

by Paul Armentano SAN DIEGO, CA- Cannabis inhalation mitigates spasticity and pain in patients with treatment-resistant multiple sclerosis (MS), according to clinical trial data published online this week in the Journal of the Canadian Medical Association (CMAJ). Investigators at the University of California, San Diego assessed the use of inhaled cannabis versus placebo in 30 patients with MS who were unresponsive to conventional treatments. Authors reported that cannabis administration resulted in a decrease in subjects’ spasticity, as measured on the modified Ashworth scale, and reduced patients’ pain scores on a visual analogue scale. “Smoked cannabis was superior to placebo in symptom and pain reduction in patients with treatment-resistant spasticity,” authors

concluded. Investigators cautioned that cannabisinhalation was also negatively associated with short-term “acute cognitive effects.” However, they noted that the “clinical significance of this result is uncertain ... (because) patients were still within the normal range for their ages and levels of education. “Overall, researchers described cannabis therapy as “generally well tolerated.” The trial is one of several recently published studies funded by the California Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research demonstrating the short-term safety and efficacy of cannabis in the treatment of a variety of hard-to-treat disease conditions. Separate clinical trials assessing the administration of oral cannabis extracts on patients with MS have shown that cannabinoids can alleviate symptoms of the disease long-

term and may also act in ways to mitigate MS progression. Sativex, an oral spray containing plant cannabis extracts, is presently legal by prescription to treat MS-related symptoms in over a dozen countries, including Canada, Germany, Great Britain, New Zealand, and Spain. Nonetheless, the National MS Society shares little enthusiasm for cannabis as a potential treatment for multiple sclerosis in the United States, stating, “Studies completed thus far have not provided convincing evidence that marijuana or its derivatives provide substantiated benefits for symptoms of MS.” For more information, contact Paul Armentano, NORML Deputy Director, at: paul@norml.org. Full text of the study, “Smoked cannabis for spasticity in multiple sclerosis: a randomized, placebo-controlled trial,” appears in the Journal of the Canadian Medical Association.

Medical Marijuana Legalization Not Accompanied By Increases In Teen Use By Paul Armentano BONN, GERMANY - The legalization of cannabis for therapeutic purposes is not associated with increases in the use of marijuana or other illicit substances among adolescents, according to a discussion paper commissioned by the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) in Germany. Economists from Montana State University, the University of Oregon, and the University of Colorado, Denver examined the relationship between state medical cannabis laws and marijuana consumption among high school students. Authors analyzed data from the national and state Youth Risky Behavior Surveys (YRBS) for the years 1993 through 2009 - during which time 13 states enacted laws allowing for the production and use of cannabis for medicinal purposes. The national YRBS is conducted biennially by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is a nationally representative sample of

U.S. high school students. Authors found no evidence that the enactment of medical cannabis legalization adversely impacted adolescents’ drug consumption. They concluded: “Our results are not consistent with the hypothesis that the legalization of medical marijuana caused an increase in the use of marijuana and other substances among high school students. “Our results suggest that the legalization of medical marijuana was not accompanied by increases in the use of marijuana or other substances such as alcohol and cocaine among high school students. Interestingly, several of our estimates suggest that marijuana use actually declined with the passage of medical marijuana laws.” A 2012 study by researchers at McGill University in Montreal and published in the journal Annals of Epidemiology previously reported similar findings, concluding: “[P]assing MMLs (medical marijuana laws) decreased past-month use among adolescents ... and had no discernible

effect on the perceived riskiness of monthly use. ... [These] estimates suggest that reported adolescent marijuana use may actually decrease following the passing of medical marijuana laws.” Previous investigations by research teams at Brown University in 2011 and Texas A&M in 2007 made similar determinations, concluding, “[C] onsistent with other studies of the liberalization of cannabis laws, medical cannabis laws do not appear to increase use of the drug.” The findings of these studies contradict public statements made by Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowske and other medical cannabis opponents, who in recent years have repeatedly alleged that the passage of medical cannabis laws is directly responsible for higher levels of self-reported marijuana consumption among U.S. teenagers.
