Musican, movie star and cartoon character, the always colorful George Clinton stages a not to be missed show at Spotlight 29 on Saturday, June 23 at 8:00 p.m.
Clinton’s career began when he formed a doo-wop group in a barbershop called the Parliments which enjoyed a hit single in 1967 with “(I Wanna) Testify.” Clinton regularly reorganized musicians in the Parliaments, later known as the Funkadelic then P-Funk All Stars to create new sounds. These two bands combined the elements of musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, Sly and the Family Stone, Cream and James Brown while exploring different sounds,

City Pushes for Shopping Center Desert Hot Springs, CA — City Council members, staff, a Chamber executive and representatives of private business traveled to last week’s International Convention of Shopping Centers (I.C.S.C) in Las Vegas to bring jobs and encourage development within the city. “Never before has such a comprehensive effort been made to encourage investment in our city,” said Councilman Scott Matas. “From the dinner hosted by private business owners the first night, to the multiple team approach developed this year, Desert Hot Springs leaders worked non-stop over the four days to promote our community,” Matas said.
“We were proud to showcase our city and the hard work being done in it. This was an important effort for the community and will end up being a ‘win/win’ for everyone,” said Mayor Pro-tem Jan Pye.
The city of Desert Hot Springs has attended this convention for several years, but the decision to include business owners and the Chamber’s new executive director, Heather Coldanado, began last year when a local business owner approached Mayor Yvonne Parks about hosting a dinner on behalf of the city. Upward Bound Grant Renewed at COD Palm Desert, CA—College of the Desert (COD) has received notification from the Department of Education that their Upward Bound grant has been renewed for five years. The purpose of Upward Bound at College of the Desert is to provide tutoring, academic counseling, and financial aid guidance to first-generation, low-income high school students. Students in the program receive services such as: supplemental instruction and tutoring in core subjects; laptop/ scientific calculator loans, monthly stipends, a week-long summer residential program, college tours, and exposure to cultural/ educational activities. The program was established at COD in 1995. Through a competitive grant writing process in March 2012, Upward Bound at COD submitted a comprehensive proposal to 10 Desert Star Weekly June 07, 2012
the Department of Education detailing the need for the program, including, the Plan of Operation, Budget, and Evaluation. The program was notified by the Hemet office of Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack it would be one of 780 programs nationwide to receive funding for five additional years, 2012-2017, at $356,350 per year, for a total of over $1.7 million. The program, 100 percent funded by the Department of Education, will serve a minimum of 85 students per year at the following high schools: Coachella Valley High School, Desert Hot Springs High School and Indio High School. My husband generally orders their Champachana (Mixed Seafood Cocktail) Grande at $10.95 which is filled with shrimp, octopus and abalone. He said the Las Palmas Champachana is just as good as the one’s served at La Vaquita’s Restaurant in San Felipe, Mexico, which is 240 miles south across the US/Mexico border on the Sea of Cortez. That’s high praise coming from a man who either really likes food or really hates it. With gasoline prices more than $4.00 a gallon in California, it’s a lot cheaper to get our Mexican cuisine fix locally then driving four hours south for the real deal.
I can recommend Las Palmas Mexican Cuisine restaurants in both Yucca Valley and Desert Hot Springs since we have frequented them both over the years. Arturo took over the old Mexican restaurant (La Palapa #4) in DHS, so now we don’t have to drive up to Yucca to enjoy his terrific food on the weekends.

Evening at Cabot’s Pueblo Desert Hot Springs, CA - A nearly full moon offered the perfect backdrop for the Cabot’s Museum 6th annual “Evening at the Pueblo” last Saturday night. Approximately 225 guests enjoyed lavish buffets, multiple music performances, silent/live auctions and tours of the Pueblo building. Attendees from as far as Los Angeles and San Diego flocked to the museum to honor the evening’s award recipients; Donna and Cargill MacMillian, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack and Barbra Maron. The evening began with a cocktail reception in the Pueblo’s main courtyard. Museum volunteers were on hand to share stories from Cabot and Portia Yerxa’s time at the Pueblo, long before it became the museum that Desert Hot Springs

This bee was holding the pieces of the leaf it cut off and was flying like an overloaded plane - nose high, tail low, barely gaining altitude. As it disappeared over the fence towards the vacant lot next door, I thought of chasing it down to find where it was going — perhaps to a nest — but the gate was locked, so I decided to find out more about these pesky things.
The inspiration of today’s article came as I was watering our Western Redbud trees this week. I noticed there were round and half moon cut outs on most of the leaves that had to be from sort of pest. As luck would have it, I noticed a low flying dark colored bee making its way towards our garden. It landed right in front of me on the leaves of our tree and started turning in a circle on top of the leaf. The darn thing ate a couple of our leaves and

Medical Marijuana Zoning Ban — CA Supreme Court Challenge Medical Marijuana Dispensaries (MMD) across California are regulated by zoning ordinances either permitting or placing a ban on operations in specific areas in counties and cities. Decisions reached regarding a Riverside MMD collective will have far reaching consequences for dispensaries located in in our desert region. The question on the legality of bans will eventually be answered by the lawsuit filed by the city of Riverside against the Health and Wellness Center MMD for violating their zoning ordinance which totally bans medical marijuana collectives. Its been two years winding its way through the courts. The city kind-of-won the first tussle when Judge John Molloy granted the injunction to close the collective. The city didn’t-kind-of-
win as he allowed the collective to continue operating by staying implementation of the injunction to give them time to file an appeal with the 4th District Court.
