George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic with Lakeside and Grandmaster Flash

Musican, movie star and cartoon character, the always colorful George Clinton stages a not to be missed show at Spotlight 29 on Saturday, June 23 at 8:00 p.m.

Clinton’s career began when he formed a doo-wop group in a barbershop called the Parliments which enjoyed a hit single in 1967 with “(I Wanna) Testify.” Clinton regularly reorganized musicians in the Parliaments, later known as the Funkadelic then P-Funk All Stars to create new sounds. These two bands combined the elements of musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, Sly and the Family Stone, Cream and James Brown while exploring different sounds,

Clinton a nd Pa rlia mentFunkadelic dominated diverse music during the 1970s with over 40 R&B hit singles (including 3 number ones) and 3 platinum albums. Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow was their second album and its title track, a feedback-drenched number taking a third of the album’s length, introduces the destruction of Christian themes explored on later songs, describing a mystical approach to salvation in which “the Kingdom of Heaven is within” and achievable through freeing one’s mind, after which one’s ass will follow. Maggot Brain is the third studio album released in 1971 and in 2012, Rolling Stone ranked the album at number 479 on its list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The title track was set fire with Eddie Hazel’s guitar work cited in Rolling Stone as number 60 on its list of 100 greatest “guitar songs” of all time. He experienced something of a resurgence in the early 1990s, as many rappers cited him as an influence and began sampling his songs. In 1994 Clinton contributed to several tracks on Primal Scream’s studio album Give Out But Don’t Give Up. In the 1990s, Clinton appeared in films such as Graffiti Bridge (1990), House Party (1990), PCU (1994), Good Burger (1997) and The Breaks (1999). In 1997 he appeared as himself in the Cartoon Network show Space Ghost Coast to Coast. Clinton also appeared in the 2004 video game, Grand Theft Auto. Rapper Dr. Dre sampled most of his beats to create his G-Funk music era.

Alongside James Brown, George Clinton is considered to be one of the most sampled musicians ever. In 1989, Clinton released The Cinderella Theory on Paisley Park, Prince’s record label. City Pushes for Shopping Center Desert Hot Springs, CA — City Council members, staff, a Chamber executive and representatives of private business traveled to last week’s International Convention of Shopping Centers (I.C.S.C) in Las Vegas to bring jobs and encourage development within the city. “Never before has such a comprehensive effort been made to encourage investment in our city,” said Councilman Scott Matas. “From the dinner hosted by private business owners the first night, to the multiple team approach developed this year, Desert Hot Springs leaders worked non-stop over the four days to promote our community,” Matas said.

“We were proud to showcase our city and the hard work being done in it. This was an important effort for the community and will end up being a ‘win/win’ for everyone,” said Mayor Pro-tem Jan Pye.

The city of Desert Hot Springs has attended this convention for several years, but the decision to include business owners and the Chamber’s new executive director, Heather Coldanado, began last year when a local business owner approached Mayor Yvonne Parks about hosting a dinner on behalf of the city. The dinner, paid for entirely with private funds, was intended to showcase improvements in the city as well as development opportunities for retailers who

Las Palmas Offers Good Mexican Food and Plenty of It

seafood is fresh and tasty.

Desert Hot Springs and Yucca Valley, CA – Las Palmas Mexican Cuisine opened in Feb. 2012 offering good Mexican cuisine and seafood at affordable prices. My husband and I have gone there a number of times because we know the owner, Arturo Patricio, from his other restaurant located in Yucca Valley on Hwy. 62. Las Palmas offers delicious Daily Specials starting at $6.95 for lunch, and up to five different shrimp dishes that are to die for.

We like to go on Saturdays when they offer all five shrimp dishes for two at $24.95 called Mariscada. It actually could feed four people and we always bring what we cannot eat home for dinner that night.

My husband generally orders their Champachana (Mixed Seafood Cocktail) Grande at $10.95 which is filled with shrimp, octopus and abalone. He said the Las Palmas Champachana is just as good as the one’s served at La Vaquita’s Restaurant in San Felipe, Mexico, which is 240 miles south across the US/Mexico border on the Sea of Cortez. That’s high praise coming from a man who either really likes food or really hates it. With gasoline prices more than $4.00 a gallon in California, it’s a lot cheaper to get our Mexican cuisine fix locally then driving four hours south for the real deal.

I can recommend Las Palmas Mexican Cuisine restaurants in both Yucca Valley and Desert Hot Springs since we have frequented them both over the years. Arturo took over the old Mexican restaurant (La Palapa #4) in DHS, so now we don’t have to drive up to Yucca to enjoy his terrific food on the weekends.

Evening at Cabot’s Pueblo Desert Hot Springs, CA - A nearly full moon offered the perfect backdrop for the Cabot’s Museum 6th annual “Evening at the Pueblo” last Saturday night. Approximately 225 guests enjoyed lavish buffets, multiple music performances, silent/live auctions and tours of the Pueblo building. Attendees from as far as Los Angeles and San Diego flocked to the museum to honor the evening’s award recipients; Donna and Cargill MacMillian, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack and Barbra Maron. The evening began with a cocktail reception in the Pueblo’s main courtyard. Museum volunteers were on hand to share stories from Cabot and Portia Yerxa’s time at the Pueblo, long before it became the museum that Desert Hot Springs

“SUESSICAL” is described as a “a fantastical, musical extravaganza!” All of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters from 15 of his books are brought to life: Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, Mayzie, and a imaginative little boy--Jojo. astrologicalaffects By Guru Ren Yogamaya, M.A. E-RYT 500 Sun In Gemini: Most affected are Gemini and All Air Signs. The month is in the sign of Gemini. For Gemini: All Mercurial themes such as light, electrical impulses, mental agility, communication, will rule supreme until June 20. For All Signs: The “lightness of being” shines brighter this month. The divine feminine and the divine masculine energies in all people, nature, in Life, come together as one in the 5th Chakra, the throat, that also represents Gemini. Best Sacred Geometry: Oxhedron (Air) Best Yantra: The colors Light Blue or Turquoise. Affects of The Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius Most affected are Sagittarius and All Fire Signs. The Lunar Eclipse was on June 4 and its’ affects continue. For Sagittarius: The Moon is in your sign and it is a Super Full Moon that will certainly bring changes. Reassess or honor your important partnerships. See yourself change for the better with your priorities in focus. For All Signs: A Lunar Eclipse is a super-Full Moon. This Lunar Eclipse has super intensity and it brings transformation. The Sun in Gemini represents change, an Air sign that fans the flame of Fire. Best Mantra: OM. Best Color: Indigo Blue Neptune In Retrograde Most affected are Pisces, Gemini and Sagittarius. This transit began on June 4 and continues until Nov. 10. For Pisces: Expect the unexpected related to your career that will be affected by the Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius on the 4th and Neptune’s retrograde. Something may end; it may give way to something new and better. With your own planet turning retrograde, you may feel a bit more introverted in relating with others that affect your career. For Gemini: You may have to revisit some personal issues, possibly your ego or the return of people and circumstances related to your career. Think Universal Ego. For Sagittarius: Coupled with the recent Lunar Eclipse, Neptune’s turn has you revisiting the altruistic side of your self. Life and true meaning become more dream-like, spirituality is comforting. For All Signs: The planet of illusion turns inward in time to have us review our higher conscious self. Our inner wisdom can lead us to find answers that outside sources may not have provided. A great time for creativity!

18 Desert Star Weekly June 07, 2012

Week of June 7 - June 13: June 7 – Mercury Into Cancer Most Affected are Cancer, Gemini and Virgo. This transit will continue until June 25. For Cancer: With the planet of communications and electrical impulses enters your sign, you may feel a surge of energy moving easily, supporting your communications, travel and gadgetry. The sign of Gemini or Virgo may figure more prominently. For Gemini: With Jupiter preparing to enter your sign, your mind may be expanded. Try putting your focus on the spiritual, literature or videos. You may feel like the light has dimmed with your focus now on the divine feminine, mother and or home. This begins at first with your own home and mother. Resolve to let go of the past. For Virgo: Your mind may now guide you in a more intuitive way. This will enable your consciousness to flow so that you can simply check it by your feelings. For All Signs: Communications with the maternal may increase and just in time for what we may need. The Challenge: Not to have expectations where personal relating is concerned. The Best: If we communicate our message in a gentler way, then and we may receive a more amiable, gentle response. Please focus on the positive for best results. June 11 – Jupiter Enters Gemini Most Affected are Gemini and All Air Signs. For Gemini: The Big News: Jupiter, the planet of luck, opportunity and expansion enters your sign and will bring you a plethora of greatness into your Life for a full year. Higher learning may appeal to you as your spiritual beliefs may expand. Careful not to take on more than you can handle. The people born under the sign of Sagittarius (or have Sag rising) will figure more prominently. For All Signs: Trying to maintain a single point of view may become obsolete during this year. We may experience intellectual flexibility as well as more curiosity. The inexperienced may try to influence the gullible; teachers who have little knowledge or who look great on the surface may be viewed as a passing trend. The contribution that Jupiter in Gemini will provide is our immediate recognition of the genuine and the change of our belief system that will help us to open our minds to an expansive wave of truths. Leaf cutter bee in action

This bee was holding the pieces of the leaf it cut off and was flying like an overloaded plane - nose high, tail low, barely gaining altitude. As it disappeared over the fence towards the vacant lot next door, I thought of chasing it down to find where it was going — perhaps to a nest — but the gate was locked, so I decided to find out more about these pesky things.

The inspiration of today’s article came as I was watering our Western Redbud trees this week. I noticed there were round and half moon cut outs on most of the leaves that had to be from sort of pest. As luck would have it, I noticed a low flying dark colored bee making its way towards our garden. It landed right in front of me on the leaves of our tree and started turning in a circle on top of the leaf. The darn thing ate a couple of our leaves and

According to the research I did, the leaf cutter bees are important native insects of the western United States. They use the cut leaf fragments to construct their nest cells and are often essential pollinators of wild plants. Most leafcutter bees are approximately the size of the common honeybee, although somewhat darker with light bands on the abdomen. They are not aggressive and sting only when handled; their sting is very mild, much less painful that

Leafcutter bees are solitary insects, meaning that they do not produce colonies as do social insects (e.g., honeybees, yellow jackets, ants, etc.), and there is only one female. They nest in soft, rotted wood; thick-stemmed, pithy plants (e.g. rose); and in similar materials that the bees can easily cut through and excavate. The cut pieces of the leaves they remove are used to form nest cells within the tunnels that they construct. They provision the cell with a mixture of nectar and pollen.

will see these emergences in the spring.

Insecticides are ineffective for preventing leaf cutting. The only known control of leaf injuries is to cover susceptible plants with cheesecloth or other loose netting during periods when leaf cutter bees are most active. The number of leafcutter bees in an area can be reduced if breeding sites are eliminated, although these might be difficult to detect. Look for rotting boards with sawdust pushed out of excavated tunnels or thick stemmed plants with The female lays an egg and seals hollow openings. the cell, producing a finished nest cell that somewhat resembles a To prevent leafcutter bees from cigar butt. Medical Marijuana Zoning Ban — CA Supreme Court Challenge Medical Marijuana Dispensaries (MMD) across California are regulated by zoning ordinances either permitting or placing a ban on operations in specific areas in counties and cities. Decisions reached regarding a Riverside MMD collective will have far reaching consequences for dispensaries located in in our desert region. The question on the legality of bans will eventually be answered by the lawsuit filed by the city of Riverside against the Health and Wellness Center MMD for violating their zoning ordinance which totally bans medical marijuana collectives. Its been two years winding its way through the courts. The city kind-of-won the first tussle when Judge John Molloy granted the injunction to close the collective. The city didn’t-kind-of-

win as he allowed the collective to continue operating by staying implementation of the injunction to give them time to file an appeal with the 4th District Court.

“Inland Empire Center’s reliance on Civil Code section 3482 is misplaced since, here, the Legislature did not expressly prohibit cities from enacting zoning regulations banning MMDs or from bringing On Dec. 20, 2010 the 4th District a nuisance action enforcing such Court continued the stay of the ordinances.” injunction while they considered the appeal, thus allowing the Does this mean that in every collective to stay open during the single piece of legislation allowing people to do something - that year-long appeal process. unless the legislation specifically The appeal was heard on Nov. 2, 2011 says cities cannot ban – that and in an almost unprecedented cities can overturn any state law rush, the court released its opinion that they want simply by banning on Nov. 9 concluding that cities its implementation under their did have the right to ban MMD zoning ordinances unless the law collectives under their zoning specifically says they can’t? ordinances. to dispense marijuana without regard to local zoning and business licensing laws.” But California voters did create a right of access to medical marijuana and if you can’t get it legally without resorting to an unreasonable expenditure of time and money in either growing it yourself or driving long distances, then that right is essentially abrogated by a ban. If it is impossible to get, then what was the point of the legislature authorizing a person to use it. The courts wrote that the law “provides immunity only as to lawful MMDs. An MMD operating in violation of a zoning ordinance prohibiting MMDs is not lawful.” I really doubt if I have ever heard of a better example of a Catch-22 situation, than the above. It’s lawful

Since most cities and counties have passed bans and some of those who have not will most certainly pass them once they are allowed too, patients who cannot grow their own will have to drive literally hundreds of miles to obtain their medicine from one of the handful of cities that allow its distribution.
