La Quinta, CA - Joining us in the desert this weekend is the musician, songwriter and singer who helped define progressive rock that fusion of classical, jazz, blues and rock music. Greg Lake will play the La Quinta Resort this Friday night in an intimate setting more like a conversation than a concert. The casual style of the affair is as if Lake is personally entertaining you in your living room. “I stumbled upon this after writing my autobiography, Lucky Man” Lake said, sounding positive. “With influential songs I’d share with audiences over the years, in journeys I found the audience had their own stories about the tunes they wanted to share.” Back then (the 1970s and 1980s) it was a shared experience with people gathering around in their circle to hear the latest albums and to examine album cover art which was often daring and experimental. “What I’ve done is immediate apparent,” Lake said. “The audience really got on board making certain it was a roller coaster of surprises. Not predictable and not boring was important. The challenge really was for me to make it always fresh and appealing, for me to go out there each night like walking in a family room, like you’ve only been away for a short while. It’s an amazing feeling of interactive bonding.” Greg Lake’s tunes have been running in our heads for decades such as “Lucky Man” (Emerson, Lake & Palmer), “The Sage” (Pictures at an Exhibition), “From the Beginning” (Trilogy), “Still... You Turn Me On” (Brain Salad Surgery) and “C’est la Vie” (Works Volume I). Lake enjoyed tremendous success with best selling albums and stadium appearances yet he is also popularly known for his Christmas single, “I Believe in Father Christmas” “Songs of a Lifetime” is Lake’s unique one-man-show touring intimate venues allowing him to talk with the audience in a small and focused setting with special effects. Lake left his London home to start his tour in Quebec before bringing his show to the eastern seaboard in Boston then Florida, and Texas. He prepared himself for our heat while in Arizona, just before arriving here in the Coachella Valley for this special event. After this, Lake’s off to Europe and Asia for his unique presentation. “It’s not just my material,” Lake said. “I’m bringing in songs from other places as well; including a song by Elvis who was a big influence upon me. I’m painting a broader picture of how life went.” Greg Lake came to prominence as a founding member of King Crimson with guitarist Robert Fripp. “In The Court of

the Crimson King”, released in 1969, made King Crimson a key influence and landmark in the emerging progressive rock genre. Lake’s vocals, which ranged from serene and soothing to acerbic and distorted, were a striking element of the album. However, Lake soon left to start the rock trio Emerson, Lake & Palmer, forming the ‘supergroup,’ ELP. From the outset, Lake filled acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, lyrics, vocals and production duties for the band. The trio did not make use of external producers for any of their albums in the 1970s, nor did they ever employ session players for studio work or live performances. ELP became highly commercially successful in the 1970s (with album sales totalling more than 30 million), and

significantly contributed to the evolution of progressive rock. Lake contributed to many of ELP’s songs but was particularly noticeable for his guitar-orientated and soulful ballads. On their debut album (Emerson, Lake & Palmer), Lake included an acoustic song called “Lucky Man”, based on a poem he had written at the age of 12. In determining the direction of the band, Lake’s focus on ballads, radio-friendly material and “down-to-earth” compositions contrasting sharply with Emerson’s desire to create rock symphonies and polyphonic, poly-rhythmic suites. The result was that ELP continuously merged classical and blues styles, producing albums with bewildering mixtures of classical pieces,

How Safe Are We Crimes Against The Elderly Crimes against the elderly are on a rapid rise, and specifically here in our valley. Criminals seek out their elderly victims because they are perceived as helpless and easy targets. Some of the current scams being used on elderly victims are the following: • Calls from scammers claiming to be family that are in trouble and need money. They will ask their victims to wire transfer money to them. • Calls from scammers claiming their victims have won a lottery. They will say that in order to receive the money, they must pay taxes and transfer fees. • Prepaid credit cards: Some prepaid cards are a scam. Scammers will call and tell their victims they have won a car or other large luxury items and tell their victims they need to add money to cover the taxes. After receiving that money, they will call back and ask for licensing fees. After receiving that money, they will call again and say that the taxes have increased, and that more money must be added. These additional charges will continue as long as their victims keep adding the money. Don’t fall victim to these crimes. Here are a few

LUCKY MAN •Continued from Pg 3 ballads, hard rock songs and epic-length suites. After their debut album, ELP recorded a live performance of their treatment of Pictures at an Exhibition, which brought in elements of electric rock, jazz and blues. The third album introduced Lake’s ballad From the Beginning which was their most commercially successful single. With ELP steadily becoming one of the highest-grossing live acts on earth, they released their most ambitious album yet in 1973, Brain Salad Surgery. Once again, Lake contributed a soulful ballad - “Still... not only with tight guitar and bass work, the You Turn Me On” - and was able to match the classic line “Welcome back my friends to the grandiose playing of Emerson and Palmer show that never ends,” ensured that Lake’s

tips to avoid becoming a victim: • Do not give money over the phone or solicitation via emails, i.e. credit card or bank info, or wire transfers unless it is a trusted person or business. Banks and other organizations will not ask for account numbers, credit card numbers, passwords or other personal information over the phone or via emails. • If a caller tells you the offer is only good at that time, or if the offer sounds too good to be true, it’s usually a scam. Do not give them any personal info, especially account or credit card numbers. • Before wiring money to a family member claiming to be in trouble, confirm with another family member the validity of the claim. • Never allow anyone into your home, even if they claim to need to use the phone or restroom, or in need of medical treatment. If they appear to need medical treatment have them wait outside while you call 911. • If asked to invest in a company or other business from someone that you have not reached out to, do not give them any personal info, i.e. credit cards, cash, or checks.

vocals and ELP’s unique brand of musicality would continue to gain popular recognition. ELP’s massive commercial success continued when they were the headline act (along with Deep Purple) at 1974’s California Jam, where they played to 180,000 people. Throughout the 1970s, Lake was known as the svelte singer who could nonetheless deliver powerful, rasping vocals. After the break-up of ELP, Lake played a few concerts with the group Asia in 1983, released two well-received solo albums, reunited with King Crimson, and toured, as well as performing with the Trans Siberian Orchestra. While many of his lyrics defy simple interpretation, his simple ballads have endured as well-regarded love songs (Still You Turn Me On and Closer to Believing, for example). Although he does write about many typical progressive rock themes - for example, war and apocalypse - he was unique throughout the 1970s with his regular output of comical songs such as “Jeremy Bender”, “The Sheriff” and “Benny the Bouncer.” Greg Lake at La Quinta should be fun for all. VIP Packages can be purchased at www. greglake.com which enables guests to attend Greg Lake’s soundcheck before the show and to enjoy a special backstage invitation to receive a limited edition laminated backstage pass, a special autographed item from Greg, Greg Lake CD plus two premium tickets to show.

Cemetery Going Dead? By dean gray

Twentynine Palms, CA – Like death and taxes - it’s one of those things you take for granted - that the local cemetery will be there forever. Instead, one local cemetery is in danger of being killed off by a county decision reducing its sphere of influence to zero. That means that although people might be dying to get in, no one will be eligible.

Trouble Down Under

The Twentynine Palms Cemetery District is also facing the Grand Jury and the District Attorney’s Public Integrity Unit. Unearthing the story has just begun. The Local Agency Formation Commission, LAFCO, recently learned of several issues at the Cemetery District. No one is complaining about the dead. It’s a grave issue about lack of money and what seems like what might be sloppy management. According to LAFCO’s report, the District’s books have not been audited for four years; the District’s most recent budget is not balanced and is severely underfunded; the District’s Board of Trustees did not officially adopt the most recent budget; the District’s reserve fund is only 7 percent, smaller than the recommended 10 percent; the lack of budgeted revenues which represent 42 percent of the District’s expenditures; and District salaries and benefits totaling more than $200,000, more than 54 percent of the Cemetery District’s expenditures.

Secret Bank Account

While this might all seem like just sloppy management - burying the truth about a secret bank account is something else. In a surprising discovery that brought investigators alive, LAFCO learned that the District has a bank account not identified in the District’s financial statements, and checks written on that hidden account have bounced. The cemetery business is not what it used to be. Current cash balances for the General Fund are substantially less than Fiscal Year 200809. Coupled with bounced checks, LAFCO staff questioned the ability of the Cemetery District to support ongoing operations. Still, lips are zipped at the cemetery as District officials remain deathly silent and are not returning calls.

Waiting for a Warm Body

LAFCO also said the Cemetery District did not respond to requests for documentation and information. Although District officials appear to know where the bodies are buried, they are resting in peace by remaining silent. The Cemetery District’s Board of Trustees are Chair Sandra Gray, Elizabeth “Betty” Laferriere, April Gibson, and Omer “Les” Snodgrass. A fifth trustee seat is vacant – waiting for a warm body to fill the now

mortifying position. Members of the Cemetery District Board of Trustees serve four-year terms (without compensation) and are appointed by the county supervisor, on recommendation of the local board, to establish cemetery policies. “We are assessing the situation at this point,” George Watson said. Watson, chief of staff for San Bernardino County Third District Supervisor Neil Derry explained that the redistricting that took effect in December only recently placed the city (and sphere of influence) of Twentynine Palms under third district authority. LAFCO commissioners went so far as to recommend that the problems of the Twentynine Palms Cemetery District be referred to the District Attorney’s Public Integrity Unit, which handles complaints involving people holding public office and monitors government boards and commissions.

one way or another on the matter. If the Twentynine Palms cemetery is shut down their customers face two possibilities - extended time on ice or internment elsewhere with the possibility of re-internment at Twentynine Palms Cemetery later once the problems of that facility are resolved. At this immediate time the cemetery remains operational. It’s unknown when the axe will fall putting an end to grief and speculation.

Cemetery History

In 1933 William J. “Bill” Lage, one of the ailing WW1 veterans who came to Twentynine Palms in hopes of improving their health, foresaw a very practical, personal need, as well as a community need Customers Deathly Silence for a cemetery in Twentynine Palms. No evidence has arisen that any cemetery The cemetery is supported by tax money customers have expressed their opinion received from property within the established

Featuring both his earlier “Available Light” and “Close At Hand” releases, as well as five previously-unheard tracks, the newly-issued collection is a great introduction to an artist who stands on his own apart from his illustrious roots (he is the only son of Paul and Linda McCartney). Just as Jeff Buckley easily established a full-fledged career separate from his famous father Tim Buckley, James McCartney is doing that with an arsenal of songs and a vocal style that are fully his own. Highlights on the “Complete EP Collection” include the experimental rock of “Glisten,” instantly-infectious power pop nugget “Angel,” a haunting reworking of Neil Young’s “Old Man” and an emotionallydetailed remembrance of his late mother (“Wings of a Lightest Weight”). BUTTERFLY GARDENING

garden guru

ATRIX

By Chris Hermann. RLA There has been an increasing interest in butterfly gardening in the last couple of years. Aunt Effie’s has sponsored the Raymond Cree Middle School’s Butterfly Garden and supported the Desert Horticultural Society in their event last year that featured Butterfly and Hummingbird Gardening. We decided to write this week’s article with the help of Mountain States Wholesale Nursery and Tucson botanist Greg Starr. Additionally, two sources of information were particularly helpful: the booklet “Desert Butterfly Gardening”, published by the Arizona Native Plant Society and the Sonoran Arthropod Studies Institute; and the book “Native Gardens for Dry Climates”, by Sally and Andy Wasowski. In a butterfly garden you should provide both nectar sources and larval foodplants. Adult butterflies feed on the nectar of certain flowers, while the caterpillars feed on specific plants known as “larval foodplants”. Try to combine plants to provide a year-round source of nectar, if possible. Limit or eliminate the use of pesticides and other chemicals in the garden, as they can kill caterpillars and adult butterflies. You can expect butterflies to be most active during ideal conditions: Sunny, calm days, when the temperatures range from 65 to 95 degrees fahrenheit. They seem to prefer early mornings and evenings during the hot summer months.

property management fly, and protection from wind when feeding. 4. Provide a puddle. Butterflies require a shallow puddle or moist soil for water. A slow dripping emitter near a water-loving plant can fulfill this need.

gardens compared to bird gardens. This is due to the greater recognition factor of plant masses rather than a singular plant by adult butterflies. Use of accent plants (unique shape such as agaves or yuccas) with the many masses can create effective contrast and interest for the garden visitor. 3. Provide sunny, wind-protected locations. Design Guidelines

1. Provide a variety of plants that feed larval and adult butterflies. Food plants need to provide for two different stages of the butterfly’s life: larval and adult. Therefore, it is important to have an adequate mix of plants that will support larvae and other plants that will be available for the adults. 2. Emphasize massing of plants. Massing should be relatively greater in butterfly

secrets of living longer

By Mr. Life Extension (Art Kunkin)

Cigarette Smokers: Subtract 8 Years From Your Life! Here are some of the 100 factors that can add or subtract years from your life as they are written about in The Long Life Equation, a useful book by Dr. Trisha Macnair, M.D. that we have been reviewing in recent columns. 30: VITAMINS (Plus 3 Years). “The need for vitamins has been recognized for centuries – the ancient Egyptians knew that eating liver could prevents night blindness (now known to be due to Vitamin A deficiency), and lemons and limes were first used by the British Royal Navy in the eighteenth century to prevent scurvy (a disease caused by Vitamin C deficiency).” While Dr. Macnair notes that government guidelines recommend the amount of each vitamin you should obtain in your diet every day, she also writes that some scientists believe the government guidelines are too low. 32: TOO MUCH SUGAR (Minus 1 Year). Low sugar intake can help to control weight and reduce the risks associated with obesity. 34: FAST FOOD (Minus 4 Years). Medicine, life on the sofa is life on the edge. Inactivity is now considered an independent risk factor for a shorter life, along with smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Lying around on the sofa makes you more prone to heart disease, diabetes, back pain, and falls and accidents when you do eventually drag yourself to your feet…A British Regional Heart Study showed that while vigorous activity halves the risk of death, any activity is better than none.” 45: NOT GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP (Minus 5 Years). “Good quality sleep can be positively linked to successful aging and longer survival…A large study in the 1950s by the American Cancer Society found that the highest death rates were among those people who said that they slept for just four hours or fewer a night. Those who slept excessively – nine to ten or more hours a night – had higher death rates as well. More recent research has confirmed these findings, with those people sleeping six to seven hours a night living the longest.” 46: NAPPING DURING THE DAY (Plus 1 Year). “…A study from Greece showed that regular midday naps of about 30 minutes may help reduce the risk of heart disease, especially in men, possibly because they help to break the tension of the day and relieve stress…A longer nap (may) alter the quality of sleep at night…If you find you need more substantial snoozes during the day, it may be time to get your health checked out.” 53: BAD DOCTOR. (Minus 4 Years). Dr Macnair writes that “If you want to live forever, you’re going to need your own personal health expert…It is also important that if you don’t get along, you get out – and find someone else.” 58: ROOM WITH A VIEW (Plus 2 Years). “…Research has shown that after an operation, those patients who were assigned to hospital rooms with a pleasant outdoor

view (of trees, for example) recovered faster and were discharged sooner than those who had a view of a brick wall…So park your chair by the window and take a good look outside. If you don’t like what you see, put up posters or paint pictures on the wall – or just make sure you get out and spend some time every day where the view is good.” 93: SMOKING (Minus 8 Years). “Cigarette smoking is the single most important cause of preventable disease and premature death in developed countries. Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, many of which are highly toxic, such as arsenic, formaldehyde, cyanide, benzene, toluene and acrolein…Smoking increases the risk of at least 50 different health problems…A study of British doctors in 2004 (found that) those who smoked lost, on average, about 8 years of life. But those smokers who quit before middle age had the same sort of life expectancy as nonsmokers…” Those wishing to purchase this book and learn more about all of the 100 lifeextension factors written about in The Long Life Equation can contact their local bookstore or phone Adams Media toll free at 1-800-289-0963. Pool Safety for Fido!

pets By brenda martin

Get Wet For The Heat

A swimming pool in the hot summer sun is one of life’s greatest pleasures here in the desert. But while water games seem fun for us, we have to remember water safety to prevent accidents for our pets. The best way to prevent accidents is by taking preventative measures like teaching your pet to swim and show him how to get out of the pool. Everyday there are reported animal deaths from pools even if they are experienced swimmers. Falling in a pool causes panic for the pooch and once they begin to panic, fear sets in then all they can focus on is getting out of the situation. If you’re not home and Fido is outside your best way of keeping him safe is by fencing in the pool area to reduce accidents. This can be a simple kind of collapsible fence and easily put up in a moments notice or you can go all out and have a professional come over and install one. There are also alarms that can attach to dog collars. The receiver sits in your house so if the dog falls in the pool the alarm will sound giving you enough time to retrieve

your pet befor something horrible can occur. The Skamper ramp is a floating device that connects to the side of the pool. By floating it can be detected eaisly by Fido who will swim over and be able to get out without having to maneuver stairs. Life vests can be a great tool, also. Cosmopawlitan Cafe on El Paseo in Palm Desert has a wonderful supply of life vest and other safety related items. And remember to never throw your pet in a pool for any reason. This will not only frighten them; this will give a negative experience to the pool altogether. Instead, hold them and ease them in slowly which will give them the confidence they need to go in on their own. This will also boost the trust and bond between animal and owner. Please keep safety tips in mind and enjoy the Summer!

The Warriors Way

Warriors is a definitive term for Grand Finale music ministry which is a two man ensemble doing some amazing things for the Gospel Hip Hop music scene. From Coachella Valley to Wyoming, nothing seems out of grasp for these Christian artists whom are just now on the verge of exploding with their outreaching performances. Alfonso Sanchez, DJ/producer of the group (aka Young Master A) has an incredible story of triumph over drug abuse and drug dealing, to being a forerunner in an industry that is sometimes put under scrutiny by more traditional religious groups. Alfonso is the Youth Pastor at Living Word in the Desert and on any given Sunday you’ll find him on stage cutting it up on his turn tables as a member of a powerful and talented worship crew. In addition to producing, he’s been an inspiration to other young performers who decided to take their music and share the Gospel through it. “Grand Finale was a group Darren Hughes aka Droc and I started,” Sanchez said, “Initially was a secular group back in 1983. We were preforming in big shows

with mainstream music artists. But the music lead to drugs and the drugs lead to addiction, and eventually we stopped making music all together. I was killing myself with my habit.” It’s hard to prepare yourself for stories like these even though you know people hit rough patches in their lives. Having them actually open up about it can be humbling. Alfonso continues, “In 1999, Pastor Jesse Sanchez, a long time friend came knocking on my door inviting me to the church End Times Christian Center. Back then it had only eight members in the congregation.” I asked Alfonso what the defining moment of his ministerial experience has been. “Having my addiction to meth taken away by the transformation Jesus made in my life. You have to understand something, I was selling drugs just to have enough money to keep my habit going and that day when Pastor Jesse knocked on my door, I was excited. I was ready for change.” Fast forward to July of 2010, “Warriors” a self-titled song, took center stage when Timothy “The Desert Storm” Bradley, entered the Agua Caliente Casino arena.

Droc preformed the song to a national audience of over 6 million HBO and showtime viewers. “The Lord used us as vessels that day to touch the hearts of people all across America,” he said. The song “Warriors” was inspired by the book of Timothy; “I fought the good fight, I finished the race,”which is one of the lines Grand Finale incorporated into the song. On June 9 2012, Timothy Bradley will be pitted against Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand in a dispute for the Welter Weight Title, and he’ll take the ring with the song “Warriors” blaring encouragement from the speakers. Frankie’s Fresh Fish Indio, CA - Hey Everyone! So this week I sharpened my Kasumi knives, trained with the dragons and found my inner fish. Frankie’s Fresh Fish in Indio, is just that. I am seriously irate with the simple fact this Boston Bred Bonehead has not been here before. This place is unpretentious and oh so welcoming.

the edible desert

Here are some of the many highlights I engaged in. (Actually…..too much.) There Frankie’s Fresh Fish is located at: 81944 are at least 20 pre-meditated sushi rolls, but Ca-111, Ste A, Indio. If you need more info Frankie nodded and smirked when I inquired give them a call (760) 342-2228 about custom requests. The tempura shrimp were perfectly battered, dipped, crisp, chewy, and hot as heck! There was a ginger soy sauce with it that was just that and it was perfect.

The smell when you walk in… wait there is no smell. Why doesn’t it smell like fresh fish? Either these guys are breeding, training and programming a super species of sushi grade task force or they “have a guy.” Razor sharp attention to detail matching their sashimi single bevel Damascus steel blades, 5 star service in a comfortable environment. Upon entering I felt like a chef in a chef’s kitchen. Confidence, simplicity and forecast of a great and inexpensive meal. I was ready. The place was packed with cheek filled smiles and chopstick wielding territorial predators of the sea, lined up at the tables like a saloon of pirates counting their treasure. Everyone seemed happy but with the understanding of “ Get your own FISH” .

Foam disposable plates, endless appetites and options. I can honestly say, that this may be my new spot. I don’t have spots because I tend to lose faith (it’s a chef thing). This place is my new #1 and my current vote for “where chef Aaron will be when you cant get him on the phone.” Frankie’s Fresh Fish, I do not think that it would fit the place or the Frankie to ramble on. Its simple, good, great, awesome, moderate, fun, lively, comfortable and just damn good. Say hello to Frankie and the many others there you will probably find hording their fish and cursing the guy ordering ahead to “hey save some fish for the humans buddy.” This was an assignment I am glad I took . Sorry to everyone that this was not reviewed earlier!

62nd Annual Grubstake Days In Yucca Valley Has Something For Everyone!

Yucca Valley, CA - From country to pop-punk, the entertainment stage at the Grubstakes Community Fair on Saturday, May 26th, will have a little bit of something for everyone. Immediately after the parade which starts down Twentynine palms highway at 10:00am, the Z107.7 Mobile DJ will take the stage and play adult contemporary hits. The Z107.7 Mobile DJ is a service that “brings the party to you.” Playing all genres of music, they offer both large and small state-of-the art sound systems and professional radio DJ’s for weddings, school dances, private parties, and other special events. Following the Z107.7 Mobile DJ will be Mosey Bravo, an all-original pop rock trio that transcends rock genres with catchy tunes and a big vocal and guitar sound that easily connects with audiences. The music melds British pop, American soul and folk music with reggae and hard rock rhythms. Mosey Bravo is led by vocalist, composer and

guitarist Michael Callan, who is responsible for crafting the band’s style and sound. His probing lyrics address the social and political forces of our time. Callan has played with George Harrison and performed in Chuck Berry’s band. He also performs as a solo artist and acoustic fingerpick guitar soloist. The group includes Daniel Boening on electric bass and Efrain Diaz on percussion. Kayla’s Little Dance Academy is a brand new dance program that just started at the Joshua Tree community center. The Academy offers classes in hip-hop, ballet, jazz, cheer, lyrical, and Polynesian. KLDA’s goal is to provide a fun, non-competitive environment for kids to dance and express themselves. The first headliner is local favorite Kristina Quigley. Quigley cannot remember a time when she wasn’t a singer. She was raised in a trucking family, and from a young age she would travel with them all over the country singing for people at truck stops with her karaoke machine.Beginning at age

Where Everybody Knows Your Name… “Making your way in the world today takes everything you’ve got. Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot. Wouldn’t you like to get away? Sometimes you want to go, where everybody knows your name.” (Theme song from TV series “Cheers”) The bar. The joint. The saloon. The watering-hole. Whatever you call it, the local bar has been an institution in America since its founding. In fact, our country was

of its clientele; dock workers, sailors, and steelmakers. With the advent of professional sports, bars became a clubhouse for fans before and after the big game. And now, thanks to television, the local pub has become an extension of the very stadiums the games are played in complete with peanuts, popcorn and beer. Nowadays, the typical sports bar features wall-to-wall monitors, carrying multiple games and sports memorabilia from all over

“There is something about going to an authentic neighborhood bar that still does the soul good.” originally conceived over the sloshing tankards of dissent by those rascals and traitors who ultimately became our founding fathers. And the birthplace was the taverns of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. No matter how sullied it may sound, the United States of America was born in a bar! It may be for that reason that the bar has emerged into a unique American institution. Less civil than the pubs of London or the lounges of Paris, the American bar has evolved from the ground up, taking form and shape not only by its location, but by the ethnicity, and common characteristics

the country, and the world. On a single wall, you can see photos of baseball from Dodger Stadium, cricket from London, soccer from Africa, cycling from France, and auto racing from Indy and Daytona. All the while enjoying great food, fabulous drinks, and not have to pay an admission fee, or spend $8 to park your car. new stadium without a complex of shops, restaurants and sports bars. Bars in the desert seem to fit into one of four categories: the old fashioned neighborhood bars, the commercial neighborhood bars, the sports bars, and the high-end lounges with respectable dining establishments. There is something about going to an authentic neighborhood bar that still does the soul good. It’s the feel of the place. Rustic. Real. Authentic. The wood floors wearing the scars and divots of its years of steady loyal customers. There is also the good ol’ bartender. Everyone’s friend and confidante. Someone who can do more than just mix drinks and take your order. When you find a good one, you know it. They have a way of making everything better. And they remember your name. That may be the real distinction between the traditional neighborhood bars and the commercial look-alikes. Everything is too smooth – too shiny. It’s not real. Life leaves marks, not only on people, but on businesses and bars. There is something reassuring in knowing that the bar and the bartender have stood the test of time. Oh, and speaking of the test of time, there is a good chance that in 10, 15, or 20 years, that shiny new plastic trendy hot spot may be a used book store, a pet shop, or a 7/11. But you can rest assured, the old neighborhood bar will still be there. And the bartender will very likely still know your name. If you want to visit some old fashioned neighborhood bars:

Sun In Gemini:

Most Affected is Gemini and All Air Signs. The month is in the sign of Gemini. For Gemini: All Mercurial themes such as light, electrical impulses, mental agility, communication, will rule supreme until June 20. A more heightened awareness of the lightness of being, sound and silence. The best side of Gemini is seen in their light attitude, dealing with their emotions easily, attraction to the genuine, thoughtfulness and, their ability to learn and communicate quickly, to accept intuition, creative expression in speech, writing, also in the arts. For All Signs: The divine feminine and the divine masculine energies in all people, nature, in Life, come together as one in the 5th Chakra, the throat, that also represents Gemini. Celebrate this month by exercising your vocal cords, doing breath techniques, breaking into a song or by trying Tantra or Partner Yoga. Best Sacred Geometry: Oxhedron (Air) Best Yantra: The colors Light Blue or Turquoise. Pluto Retrograde. Most Affected are Scorpio, Capricorn and Aries. This transit began on April 10 and will continue until September 17. For Scorpio: The energies of your ruling planet turn inward for a long stretch. The challenge is that your usual, powerful drive may be more subdued. The best is the opportunity to turn inward to review, examine your spirituality, emotions and any dark side. For Capricorn: Hard lessons from the past may come back to haunt you. Embrace the good that this has provided. Revisit the lessons and education from the past that will help you in your Life. For Aries: Opportunities related to spirituality or career may feel stalled. It’s only a temporary slow down; consider the possibility that this may work in your favor. For All Signs: We may feel like turning inward, reflecting on our personal or professional resources. The Good of this is that secrets or important, useful information that were hidden may come to light, The challenges are increased insecurities or how to handle the new info. Venus Retrograde Most affected are Taurus, Libra and Aries. This transit began on May 15 and will continue until June 27. For Taurus: Put important romantic or financial plans on hold from the 15th until June 27th as your ruling planet, Venus is in retrograde. Avoid negative thoughts, arguments with your partner. The Solar Eclipse on May 20th can bring positive, fiscal opportunities. For Libra: Your ruling planet is now running its’ course in the reverse and you may feel a bit more introverted. For Aries: Think twice before your words jump out, especially at your partner. The 16th could be a major power-play day as something in relation to a past relationship

may surface to bring opportunity to change what you can to your benefit. For All Signs: The planet representing Love, beauty and the senses turns retrograde to help us review the relationship with others, our values; our relationship with ourselves. The Challenge: Relating with others in a harmonious manner may be difficult, especially the first 48 hours into this transit. Affects From The Solar Eclipse in Gemini Most Affected are Gemini and All Air Signs. A Solar Eclipse is a Super-New Moon. For Gemini: The Solar Eclipse on May 20 was in your sign and the affects of this Super New Moon will bring higher opportunities into your Life. With Jupiter still in Taurus, the energies, the fun, the opportunities are doubled and expanded in most areas of your Life. For All Signs: This powerful Solar Eclipse has brought forth most important endings and most important beginnings. Another quantum leap is calling for each individual and all of humanity. As it always has been, it is and will always be, light is shining all around you, follow it. In your meditations, it is best to ask for what you need and not for what you want. Best Sacred Geometry: Octahedron (Air) Best Yantra: The colors Turquoise or Light Blue. Week of May 24 – May 30: Mercury Into Gemini: Most Affected are Gemini and Virgo. This transit began on May 9 and will continue until June 14. For Gemini: With the planet of communications and electrical impulses in your sign, you may feel a surge of energy moving easily, supporting your communications, travel and gadgetry. Coupled with Jupiter preparing to enter your sign, your mind may be expanded. Try putting your focus on the spiritual, literature or videos. For Virgo: Your mental capacity may jump to new heights and may become clearer and lead you to take quick yet changeable actions. For your state of mind and nervous system, it would be best to breath, slow your mind down and lay low or stop your intake of sugar, caffeine and the computer. The sign of Gemini may figure more prominently. For All Signs: We may feel lighter and quicker in our thoughts and actions. The Challenge: Too much flexibility in changing one’s mind can bring about feelings of uncertainty that can lead to insecurities. The Best: Ren Yogamaya is a Yoga teacher registered at the highest level with the Yoga Alliance, a writer, the published author of the book, EAT BY COLOR: Foods, Colors and The Chakras, a syndicated columnist and she is a natural channel for Universal Light. She supports your community and teaches at Yoga Blue in Pasadena, at Dancing Shiva Yoga in L.A. and can be reached at www.renyogamaya.com

Are You Still Paying Too Much For Your Medications? Every three minutes another person falls behind on credit card debt. It’s no wonder, since every major credit card company has nearly doubled the minimum monthly payment on consumers’ bills. Federal Regulators forced the change because of their concern about the growing mountain of consumer debt, which stands at $2.17 trillion. Many consumers can only pay the minimum payment, which can take up to 30 years to pay off. Now, relief is in sight for millions of Americans. CreditGUARD of America, a non-profit licensed debt management service provider, is making a new program available to lower debt payments and become free of all credit card debt in only three to five years. Consumers need only $2,000 or more in total credit card debt and behind on any account, to cut their payment by 35% to 50%, and reduce or eliminate interest charges altogether.

You can save up to 90% when you fill your prescriptions at our Canadian Pharmacy. Their
