La Quinta, CA - Joining us in the desert this weekend is the musician, songwriter and singer who helped define progressive rock that fusion of classical, jazz, blues and rock music. Greg Lake will play the La Quinta Resort this Friday night in an intimate setting more like a conversation than a concert. The casual style of the affair is as if Lake is personally entertaining you in your living room. “I stumbled upon this after writing my autobiography, Lucky Man” Lake said, sounding positive. “With influential songs I’d share with audiences over the years, in journeys I found the audience had their own stories about the tunes they wanted to share.” Back then (the 1970s and 1980s) it was a shared experience with people gathering around in their circle to hear the latest albums and to examine album cover art which was often daring and experimental. “What I’ve done is immediate apparent,” Lake said. “The audience really got on board making certain it was a roller coaster of surprises. Not predictable and not boring was important. The challenge really was for me to make it always fresh and appealing, for me to go out there each night like walking in a family room, like you’ve only been away for a short while. It’s an amazing feeling of interactive bonding.” Greg Lake’s tunes have been running in our heads for decades such as “Lucky Man” (Emerson, Lake & Palmer), “The Sage” (Pictures at an Exhibition), “From the Beginning” (Trilogy), “Still... You Turn Me On” (Brain Salad Surgery) and “C’est la Vie” (Works Volume I). Lake enjoyed tremendous success with best selling albums and stadium appearances yet he is also popularly known for his Christmas single, “I Believe in Father Christmas” “Songs of a Lifetime” is Lake’s unique one-man-show touring intimate venues allowing him to talk with the audience in a small and focused setting with special effects. Lake left his London home to start his tour in Quebec before bringing his show to the eastern seaboard in Boston then Florida, and Texas. He prepared himself for our heat while in Arizona, just before arriving here in the Coachella Valley for this special event. After this, Lake’s off to Europe and Asia for his unique presentation. “It’s not just my material,” Lake said. “I’m bringing in songs from other places as well; including a song by Elvis who was a big influence upon me. I’m painting a broader picture of how life went.” Greg Lake came to prominence as a founding member of King Crimson with guitarist Robert Fripp. “In The Court of

the Crimson King”, released in 1969, made King Crimson a key influence and landmark in the emerging progressive rock genre. Lake’s vocals, which ranged from serene and soothing to acerbic and distorted, were a striking element of the album. However, Lake soon left to start the rock trio Emerson, Lake & Palmer, forming the ‘supergroup,’ ELP. From the outset, Lake filled acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, lyrics, vocals and production duties for the band. The trio did not make use of external producers for any of their albums in the 1970s, nor did they ever employ session players for studio work or live performances. ELP became highly commercially successful in the 1970s (with album sales totalling more than 30 million), and
significantly contributed to the evolution of progressive rock. Lake contributed to many of ELP’s songs but was particularly noticeable for his guitar-orientated and soulful ballads. On their debut album (Emerson, Lake & Palmer), Lake included an acoustic song called “Lucky Man”, based on a poem he had written at the age of 12. In determining the direction of the band, Lake’s focus on ballads, radio-friendly material and “down-to-earth” compositions contrasting sharply with Emerson’s desire to create rock symphonies and polyphonic, poly-rhythmic suites. The result was that ELP continuously merged classical and blues styles, producing albums with bewildering mixtures of classical pieces,

How Safe Are We Crimes Against The Elderly Crimes against the elderly are on a rapid rise, and specifically here in our valley. Criminals seek out their elderly victims because they are perceived as helpless and easy targets. Some of the current scams being used on elderly victims are the following: • Calls from scammers claiming to be family that are in trouble and need money. They will ask their victims to wire transfer money to them. • Calls from scammers claiming their victims have won a lottery. They will say that in order to receive the money, they must pay taxes and transfer fees. • Prepaid credit cards: Some prepaid cards are a scam. Scammers will call and tell their victims they have won a car or other large luxury items and tell their victims they need to add money to cover the taxes. After receiving that money, they will call back and ask for licensing fees. After receiving that money, they will call again and say that the taxes have increased, and that more money must be added. These additional charges will continue as long as their victims keep adding the money. Don’t fall victim to these crimes. Here are a few

vocals and ELP’s unique brand of musicality would continue to gain popular recognition. ELP’s massive commercial success continued when they were the headline act (along with Deep Purple) at 1974’s California Jam, where they played to 180,000 people. Throughout the 1970s, Lake was known as the svelte singer who could nonetheless deliver powerful, rasping vocals. After the break-up of ELP, Lake played a few concerts with the group Asia in 1983, released two well-received solo albums, reunited with King Crimson, and toured, as well as performing with the Trans Siberian Orchestra. While many of his lyrics defy simple interpretation, his simple ballads have endured as well-regarded love songs (Still You Turn Me On and Closer to Believing, for example). Although he does write about many typical progressive rock themes - for example, war and apocalypse - he was unique throughout the 1970s with his regular output of comical songs such as “Jeremy Bender”, “The Sheriff” and “Benny the Bouncer.” Greg Lake at La Quinta should be fun for all. Cemetery Going Dead? By dean gray
Twentynine Palms, CA – Like death and taxes - it’s one of those things you take for granted - that the local cemetery will be there forever. Instead, one local cemetery is in danger of being killed off by a county decision reducing its sphere of influence to zero. That means that although people might be dying to get in, no one will be eligible.
Trouble Down Under
The Twentynine Palms Cemetery District is also facing the Grand Jury and the District Attorney’s Public Integrity Unit. Unearthing the story has just begun. The Local Agency Formation Commission, LAFCO, recently learned of several issues at the Cemetery District. No one is complaining about the dead. It’s a grave issue about lack of money and what seems like what might be sloppy management. According to LAFCO’s report, the District’s books have not been audited for four years; the District’s most recent budget is not balanced and is severely underfunded; the District’s Board of Trustees did not officially adopt the most recent budget; the District’s reserve fund is only 7 percent, smaller than the recommended 10 percent; the lack of budgeted revenues which represent 42 percent of the District’s expenditures; and District salaries and benefits totaling more than $200,000, more than 54 percent of the Cemetery District’s expenditures.
Secret Bank Account
While this might all seem like just sloppy management - burying the truth about a secret bank account is something else. In a surprising discovery that brought investigators alive, LAFCO learned that the District has a bank account not identified in the District’s financial statements, and checks written on that hidden account have bounced. The cemetery business is not what it used to be. Current cash balances for the General Fund are substantially less than Fiscal Year 200809. Coupled with bounced checks, LAFCO staff questioned the ability of the Cemetery District to support ongoing operations. Still, lips are zipped at the cemetery as District officials remain deathly silent and are not returning calls.
Waiting for a Warm Body
LAFCO also said the Cemetery District did not respond to requests for documentation and information. Although District officials appear to know where the bodies are buried, they are resting in peace by remaining silent. The Cemetery District’s Board of Trustees are Chair Sandra Gray, Elizabeth “Betty” Laferriere, April Gibson, and Omer “Les” Snodgrass. A fifth trustee seat is vacant – waiting for a warm body to fill the now

Members of the Cemetery District Board of Trustees serve four-year terms (without compensation) and are appointed by the county supervisor, on recommendation of the local board, to establish cemetery policies. “We are assessing the situation at this point,” George Watson said. Watson, chief of staff for San Bernardino County Third District Supervisor Neil Derry explained that the redistricting that took effect in December only recently placed the city (and sphere of influence) of Twentynine Palms under third district authority. LAFCO commissioners went so far as to recommend that the problems of the Twentynine Palms Cemetery District be referred to the District Attorney’s Public Integrity Unit, which handles complaints involving people holding public office and monitors government boards and commissions.

Aunt Effie’s has sponsored the Raymond Cree Middle School’s Butterfly Garden and supported the Desert Horticultural Society in their event last year that featured Butterfly and Hummingbird Gardening. We decided to write this week’s article with the help of Mountain States Wholesale Nursery and Tucson botanist Greg Starr. Additionally, two sources of information were particularly helpful: the booklet “Desert Butterfly Gardening”, published by the Arizona Native Plant Society and the Sonoran Arthropod Studies Institute; and the book “Native Gardens for Dry Climates”, by Sally and Andy Wasowski. In a butterfly garden you should provide both nectar sources and larval foodplants. Adult butterflies feed on the nectar of certain flowers, while the caterpillars feed on specific plants known as “larval foodplants”. Try to combine plants to provide a year-round source of nectar, if possible. Limit or eliminate the use of pesticides and other chemicals in the garden, as they can kill caterpillars and adult butterflies. You can expect butterflies to be most active during ideal conditions: Sunny, calm days, when the temperatures range from 65 to 95 degrees fahrenheit. They seem to prefer early mornings and evenings during the hot summer months.

Here are some of the 100 factors that can add or subtract years from your life as they are written about in The Long Life Equation, a useful book by Dr. Trisha Macnair, M.D. that we have been reviewing in recent columns. 30: VITAMINS (Plus 3 Years). “The need for vitamins has been recognized for centuries – the ancient Egyptians knew that eating liver could prevents night blindness (now known to be due to Vitamin A deficiency), and lemons and limes were first used by the British Royal Navy in the eighteenth century to prevent scurvy (a disease caused by Vitamin C deficiency).” While Dr. Macnair notes that government guidelines recommend the amount of each vitamin you should obtain in your diet every day, she also writes that some scientists believe the government guidelines are too low. 32: TOO MUCH SUGAR (Minus 1 Year). Low sugar intake can help to control weight and reduce the risks associated with obesity. 34: FAST FOOD (Minus 4 Years). To prepare foods that taste good, have a reasonable shelf life and return a good profit,
manufacturers pack foods with preservatives, refined sugars and trans fats – ingredients that make nutritionists shriek. That’s why Dr. Macnair concludes that if you regularly eat fast foods or pre-packaged foods, you could lose four years off your life span. 38: OMEGA-3s (Plus 5 Years). This is a fatty acid that does “a fantastic job of preventing coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and arthritis, among a host of other conditions…There are ways we can up our Omega-3 intake. Oily fish such as mackerel, salmon or sardines are a good source and you should aim to eat at least two portions a week…And consider supplements after consulting with your doctor – they may be the only way to get enough Omega-3s.” 40: STRETCHING (Plus 1 Year). “Limbs that are stiff and tight are more prone to injury and put abnormal strain on other areas of the body, leading to back pain, arthritis and other problems…You want to get out there and dance (or run, jump or play tennis – whatever you like).” 44. (Minus 4 Years). Dr Macnair writes that “If you want to live forever, you’re going to need your own personal health expert…It is also important that if you don’t get along, you get out – and find someone else.” 58: ROOM WITH A VIEW (Plus 2 Years). “…Research has shown that after an operation, those patients who were assigned to hospital rooms with a pleasant outdoor
view (of trees, for example) recovered faster and were discharged sooner than those who had a view of a brick wall…So park your chair by the window and take a good look outside. If you don’t like what you see, put up posters or paint pictures on the wall – or just make sure you get out and spend some time every day where the view is good.” 93: SMOKING (Minus 8 Years). “Cigarette smoking is the single most important cause of preventable disease and premature death in developed countries. Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, many of which are highly toxic, such as arsenic, formaldehyde, cyanide, benzene, toluene and acrolein…Smoking increases the risk of at least 50 different health problems…A study of British doctors in 2004 (found that) those who smoked lost, on average, about 8 years of life. Get Wet For The Heat
A swimming pool in the hot summer sun is one of life’s greatest pleasures here in the desert. But while water games seem fun for us, we have to remember water safety to prevent accidents for our pets. The best way to prevent accidents is by taking preventative measures like teaching your pet to swim and show him how to get out of the pool. Everyday there are reported animal deaths from pools even if they are experienced swimmers. Falling in a pool causes panic for the pooch and once they begin to panic, fear sets in then all they can focus on is getting out of the situation. If you’re not home and Fido is outside your best way of keeping him safe is by fencing in the pool area to reduce accidents. This can be a simple kind of collapsible fence and easily put up in a moments notice or you can go all out and have a professional come over and install one. There are also alarms that can attach to dog collars. The receiver sits in your house so if the dog falls in the pool the alarm will sound giving you enough time to retrieve
your pet befor something horrible can occur. The Skamper ramp is a floating device that connects to the side of the pool. By floating it can be detected eaisly by Fido who will swim over and be able to get out without having to maneuver stairs. Life vests can be a great tool, also. This will not only frighten them; this will give a negative experience to the pool altogether. The Warriors Way
Warriors is a definitive term for Grand Finale music ministry which is a two man ensemble doing some amazing things for the Gospel Hip Hop music scene. From Coachella Valley to Wyoming, nothing seems out of grasp for these Christian artists whom are just now on the verge of exploding with their outreaching performances. Alfonso Sanchez, DJ/producer of the group (aka Young Master A) has an incredible story of triumph over drug abuse and drug dealing, to being a forerunner in an industry that is sometimes put under scrutiny by more traditional religious groups. Alfonso is the Youth Pastor at Living Word in the Desert and on any given Sunday you’ll find him on stage cutting it up on his turn tables as a member of a powerful and talented worship crew. In addition to producing, he’s been an inspiration to other young performers who decided to take their music and share the Gospel through it. “Grand Finale was a group Darren Hughes aka Droc and I started,” Sanchez said, “Initially was a secular group back in 1983. We were preforming in big shows
with mainstream music artists. But the music lead to drugs and the drugs lead to addiction, and eventually we stopped making music all together. I was killing myself with my habit.” It’s hard to prepare yourself for stories like these even though you know people hit rough patches in their lives. Having them actually open up about it can be humbling. Alfonso continues, “In 1999, Pastor Jesse Sanchez, a long time friend came knocking on my door inviting me to the church End Times Christian Center. Back then it had only eight members in the congregation.” I asked Alfonso what the defining moment of his ministerial experience has been. “Having my addiction to meth taken away by the transformation Jesus made in my life. You have to understand something, I was selling drugs just to have enough money to keep my habit going and that day when Pastor Jesse knocked on my door, I was excited. I was ready for change.” Fast forward to July of 2010, “Warriors” a self-titled song, took center stage when Timothy “The Desert Storm” Bradley, entered the Agua Caliente Casino arena.
Droc preformed the song to a national audience of over 6 million HBO and showtime viewers. “The Lord used us as vessels that day to touch the hearts of people all across America,” he said. The song “Warriors” was inspired by the book of Timothy; “I fought the good fight, I finished the race,”which is one of the lines Grand Finale incorporated into the song. On June 9 2012, Timothy Bradley will be pitted against Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand in a dispute for the Welter Weight Title, and he’ll take the ring with the song “Warriors” blaring encouragement from the speakers. Frankie’s Fresh Fish Indio, CA - Hey Everyone! So this week I sharpened my Kasumi knives, trained with the dragons and found my inner fish. Frankie’s Fresh Fish in Indio, is just that. I am seriously irate with the simple fact this Boston Bred Bonehead has not been here before. This place is unpretentious and oh so welcoming.

The installation/exhibition represents Mark Bulwinkle’s signature style that he has developed over the past forty years and includes a flock of fantastical flying aluminum birds hanging from the ceiling, a forest of fanciful free-standing steel story-sculptures mounted on re-bar and brake discs, quirky steel cut desert varmints and character-driven steel screen cut-outs, along with collections of hydraulicallypressed stoneware tiles and digitally created and printed “faces” that are recognizable characters from our culture with a refinement reminiscent of ancient miniatures. Mark Bulwinkle is a San Francisco Bay area
artist well known for his intricate flame-cut works in galvanized steel and aluminum. His previous career as a ships welder inspired him to pursue transferring the art of paper stenciling to thick steel plate using a burning torch. His gift for creating elaborate and complex designs brought him instant international recognition and led him to pursue his artistry full time. California Desert Chorale has just completed its eighteenth season of bringing fine choral music to the Coachella Valley. The Chorale performs in many Coachella Valley venues, including local churches, schools, Indian Wells Theater and McCallum Theatre. Whatever you call it, the local bar has been an institution in America since its founding. In fact, our country was

And now, thanks to television, the local pub has become an extension of the very stadiums the games are played in complete with peanuts, popcorn and beer. Nowadays, the typical sports bar features wall-to-wall monitors, carrying multiple games and sports memorabilia from all over

Bars in the desert seem to fit into one of four categories: the old fashioned neighborhood bars, the commercial neighborhood bars, the sports bars, and the high-end lounges with respectable dining establishments. There is something about going to an authentic neighborhood bar that still does the soul good. It’s the feel of the place. Rustic. Real. Authentic. The wood floors wearing the scars and divots of its years of steady loyal customers. There is also the good ol’ bartender. Everyone’s friend and confidante. Someone who can do more than just mix drinks and take your order. When you find a good one, you know it. They have a way of making everything better. And they remember your name. That may be the real distinction between the traditional neighborhood bars and the commercial look-alikes. Everything is too smooth – too shiny. It’s not real. Life leaves marks, not only on people, but on businesses and bars. There is something reassuring in knowing that the bar and the bartender have stood the test of time. Oh, and speaking of the test of time, there is a good chance that in 10, 15, or 20 years, that shiny new plastic trendy hot spot may be a used book store, a pet shop, or a 7/11.
