alm Springs, CA - Saturday, May 5th, the O’Donell Golf Club in Palm Springs will be holding Evening Under the Stars, the 19th annual gala event to benefit AIDS Assistance Program. This years main attraction are the eighties phenomenon The Go-Go’s. After more than three decades in the music business, these girls are still as awesome, energetic and beautiful as ever. The Go-Go’s were the first female ‘Girl Power’ group. They not only were an all girl band, they had an all female staff including
women roadies, a woman manager and women in every position needed. On the outside they seemed like a fun bunch of girl just out looking for a good time, but inside the group there was more going on than what the fans saw. I recently sat down with guitarist and keyboardist Charlotte Caffey to discuss The Go-Go’s long standing place in the rock-n -roll history books and we talked about some of the seedy underbelly that has been a lot of the focus over the past few years. Charlotte made it clear that she didn’t want to really focus on this subject, but
acknowledged in retrospect it probably was a little out of hand, but at that moment they were a group of young chicks who didn’t think it was all that that bad. “Rehab saved my life...I talked openly about it in a VH-1 Behind The Music. At that time I was 16 years sober and felt it could help a lot of people... I have a seventeen year old daughter now and am grateful I am able to talk openly with her about drugs. I know a lot of parents that can’t. So something good did come out of it all.” Surprisingly The Go-Go’s only put out four albums in their long career, which is a testament to their extraordinary singing and song writing abilities. “Everyone had a hand in the song writing... Music speaks to people... it’s powerful.” When asked if they had complete control over all their songs and video’s, Caffey said the one possible regret she had was the Vacation video. Laughing as she recalls,“I think it was Belinda and me who wanted to do a video as Roller Derby Girls in skates...that didn’t happen.” The band has shaped their tour this year around the AIDS Assistance Program and are proud to be making an impact in the process of finding a cure for AIDS.”It’s an important

Silent titans peer down pompously, not ominously. They seem bored as they lay about in piles of skulls, limbs and fists. I crawl along in my old Honda and wonder what they did to deserve it. I approach a signpost, park, get out and read it: You are positioned midpoint overlooking San Andreas. It’s not my fault if Mother Nature gets hungry, licks her chops and opens wide and not my fault if she swallows, but me and my Honda will morph into oysters, slip off the half-shelf, slide down her gullet and settle into her stomach. My best desert summer was the one in which I wasn’t Mother Nature’s appetizer.
Unemployed with two Bassets to raise, both with sad eyes, big paws, and highly skilled at nailing the ceiling fan with slobber. The truth is they ‘raised’ me that summer, denying me the chance to wallow in self doubt by relentlessly ‘hounding’ me for exercise. In the past, I’d run them, but now they were running me, dancing their way through the sprinklers at Nellie Coffman Middle School, totally in the moment, with the past and future meaningless. And it made me realize, the present is where I also wanted to be. My two friends are gone now, but the memory that remains, is how much their joy became my joy.

letters to editor Dear Editor, I am troubled by the number of people with whom I have spoken to regarding DHS Code Enforcement. Before I read the story below, I had just encountered a young man who told me that his 56 yr. old mother had been fined $5000. After reading the story below, and hearing this young man and others, I believe that we have a run away problem. How many homes are being taken away or lost, as a result of a code violation? The young man above stated that as a result of Code putting the fine on his tax bill, his mother’s monthly note rose to $200 more per month. In order to keep up with her house note, she was forced to borrow the $5000 to pay off the fine. I believe the city should be kept in an orderly fashion however, I do not believe that, in this economy, citizens are all able to immediately, correct some of the deficiencies in and around their homes. In addition, some complain about the “heavy handedness” applied to some while allowing others to continue with same infractions without being fined or forced to comply and , many are City

Is there any way to ascertain the number and amount of fines levied on DHS citizen for Code Violations? 2. Is there a maximum allowable fine for Code violations? 3. Are Codes violations categorized as minor to serious or, are all fines levied based on the whims of the Code enforcer? I believe that the City has found a way to rob the citizen in order to prop up their budget and, the enforcement is selective targeting of certain citizens. An expose on this issue is needed-HELP... Full Story: Mike Egan’s Story(compliment of Ron’s Log DHS City Council Meeting Feb. 2012) Mike Egan said he needs some help. He works for Group Egan, Inc. a company hired by banks to manage, market and sell assets. [Properties, I think]. On January 5, 2012, Fannie Mae assigned to them 11263 Pomelo Drive. On January 23 the bank sent a copy of a $1,000 fine dated November 7, 2011. “Two months before the bank owned the home,” he said. Mr. Egan contacted code enforcement on January 23 and was told that Theresa, the ticketing officer, was out sick and to call back later. After several days he called back and left a voice mail. Theresa returned his call the same day and explained the violation. He asked her, “How can you hold the bank responsible for the condition of the property months before they legally owned it.” She cut him off to ask if they could have an intelligent conversation. Theresa told him the bank becomes responsible for the property as soon as the owner stops making payments. He asked her to email him any photos or documentation she had. After waiting a few hours without receiving anything, Mr. Egan called her again. Theresa passed his call on to Mr. Sengstock who told him to file an open records request. Mr. Egan asked him why he couldn’t just send it. Mr. Sengstock told him to request it via email. Mr. Egan did so. He received a response telling him to go to the bank for the information. Here Mr. Egan’s 3 minutes expired, so he just asked “What do I do?” Mayor Parks said Mr. Egan had sent her an email and she had forwarded it to Chief Williams. Mr. Egan said the fines went from $1,000 for “weeds and two dead palm fronds” to $10,500. Mr. Egan held up a photo of the property when the bank took possession. City Attorney Duran cut off the conversation at this point. Chief Williams said that Mr. Egan could leave the photo at the back table so all could see it, but it wasn’t there later when I looked. Brew At The Zoo

alm Desert, CA - “Saving Wildlife One Beer at a Time.” That’s the theme behind the 3rd Annual Brew at the Zoo, one of SoCal’s most popular beer festivals. “Going into summer we really need the support of the community,” says Franchesa Forrer, the events manager for Brew at the Zoo. “The first year we sold out of the 400 tickets we had, this year we are selling 1,500!” The huge jump in tickets and money will go directly to help and support the animals. “The money not only helps our animals but we are part of a number of international and national projects to help endangered specie. It’s an honor to be able to help the animals. We are members of SSP (Species Survival Plan) and have several SSP animals here including a mexican wolf, Arabian oryx and amur leopard, which there are less than 200 left in the world.” The list of 35 vendors is not only impressive because of the food and drinks, but because everything is donated. The handcrafted beer, stone-oven pizza, wonder musical acts a re all giving their time and services for free. Including the VIP lounge hosted by Hot Purple Energy. In addition to the amazing beer, food and performances, there will be several raffles. The top raffle prize will be a seven day stay at Lake Tahoe. Of course there wouldn’t be an event without animals, and this year marks the debut of one of the most adorable creatures; Mr. Prickles with the cutest face you will ever see on a porcupine. As Franchesa Forrer says, “It’s a great way to rediscover the zoo. Come have fun, relax and discover our wildlife with a glass of wine or beer.” Note that this event is for adults ages 21 and up only. Tickets are $40 for members and $55 for non-members which includes ten 4oz premium beers. Award-winning Martin Scorsese film “Hugo” knows the story behind “Le Voyage Dans La Lune” (A Trip to the Moon), a classic 16-minute silent movie made by Georges Méliés in 1902 and recognized as the first film to use science fiction as its theme. For most of the late 20th century it was thought lost but in 1993 a long-lost hand-painted color print was found in Spain and a long process was undertaken to restore the film and transfer it to a digital print. Paris, France-based duo AIR was asked to compose an original new score for the restored 2011 premiere of “Le Voyage Dans La Lune,” which has now been released as part of a limited edition CD+DVD featuring the Nicolas Godin and JB Dunckel soundtrack on the CD and the
masterfully-restored film on the DVD. The blend of instrumental music and some vocalanchored selections, this is an involving and seminal musical recording that has helped renew interest in the 110-year-old film. When the dust settles over Stagecoach I
ndio, CA - At three days, Stagecoach 2012 proved to join the ranks of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival as a truly mammoth event. There was plenty to admire via the fest’s trio of stages positioned at the Empire Polo Club in Indio offering a wide range of choices for concertgoers. Stagecoach played out April 27-29, with many of the best Saturday and Sunday performances landing inside the relatively intimate Mustang and Palomino tents while the party-minded masses hung out in front of the Mane Stage to catch featured artists such as Jason Aldean, Alabama, Miranda Lambert, Sheryl Crow and Brad Paisley. Friday’s schedule was limited to action on the Mane Stage, with Sara Evans and Alabama delivering the best sets of the day. A gifted singer and performer, there was a rhythm and power that found the growing crowd embracing Evans’ hits, personal stories and strong covers, notably a version of an old Rod Stewart gem, “My Heart Can’t Tell You No.” With her bassist brother Matt Evans leading the band, Evans was able to maintain her focus on the show itself, and she didn’t disappoint those who wanted nothing but hit singles. Later 1970s and ‘80s country music hit makers Alabama pleased the faithful with well-known songs such as “Feels So Right,” “Song of the South,” “She & I” and many others, with the band bringing those magical vocal harmonies to life in the desert night. Saturday provided no fewer than five great reasons to hang out at the Palomino all day long. While Sara Watkins impressed with her sweet soprano and tasty fiddle playing, heavy hitters Dave Alvin and the Guilty Ones, the Jayhawks, Chris Isaak, and the Mavericks all provided memorable turns for discerning listeners. Backed by a terrific band, the 56-year-old Alvin bust out of the gate with a fiery “Fourth of July” (originally recorded by X when Alvin was briefly a member) and proceeded to offer up a batch of hard-charging roots-rock that gained intensity by the minute. The Jayhawks’ mix of power-pop harmonies and authentic Americana song craft was a joy to hear. Singer-songwriter and guitarist Gary Louris (who quickly sound-checked his mic with a round of Tim Hardin’s “Reason to Believe”) was greeted with welcoming shouts by die-hards likely drawn to Indio for the primary chance to see the Minneapolis band (reformed in 2009 after a five-year hiatus) and once more hear its unique sound, a wonderful mix akin to blending Big Star with Old 97’s.
Highlights came fast and frequently over the course of the band’s too-short 45-minute set. The classic “Wichita” with its sublime harmonies, the rollicking Neil Young-flavored “Waiting For The Sun,” the new melodic rocker “Closer to Your Side” and the ferocious country grind of “Black-Eyed Susan” the latter two off last year’s “Mockingbird Time” all succeeded big time. Clad in a sleek purple Nudie suit, Isaak hit the same artistic highs achieved by Alvin and the Jayhawks, but also nearly packed the spacious Palomino tent and delivered such an energetic show that he was able to please both discerning listeners and the party people who comprise the majority of the fest’s attendees. Featuring both his best-known hits (the haunting ballad “Wicked Game,” the swampy retro-rocker “Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing”) and a wealth of early rock ‘n’ roll tunes featured on his 2011 double-disc salute “Beyond the Sun,” Isaak literally had the place going nuts when only three songs into his hour-long set he walked into the packed audience and greeted fans as he sang “Don’t Let Me Be on My Own,” reaching the rear of the long tent before running back to the stage. Isaak is a unique performer who has carved out a long career via his entertaining live shows. He’s also a gifted comedian with a perfect knack for knowing how to weave a
story into another song or turn on the cheeky charm between tunes: “I feel like I’m back in my hometown of Stockton, out at the 4H meeting,” the seemingly unchanged 55-yearold heartthrob said. Here he had fans dancing and singing along to many of his offerings, including covers of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash. He closed things out with his most dynamic and rousing remake, a spirited rendering of Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman” that likely would have made those giants of the past proud. I can’t believe more Stagecoach-goers
were not on hand to catch the Mavericks’ first public concert in nine years (the Indio show was also the first stop on the reunited group’s North American reunion tour). Singer Raul Malo, lead guitarist and backing vocalist Eddie Perez, drummer Paul Deakin and bassist Robert Reynolds performed many of the band’s best-known songs (the soaring “What a Crying Shame,” spirited “Dance the Night Away,” “There Goes My Heart”) as well as a cover of Roy Orbison’s “Blue Bayou” and several new songs from the band’s forthcoming fulllength return disc. Like the world at large, Stagecoach can be cruel. While the wonderful fivemember American bluegrass outfit Greensky Bluegrass unleashed breathtaking mix of progressive bluegrass and jam-band-infused Americana in the Mustang tent Sunday afternoon, they attracted only a fraction of the viewers that commercial players did on the Mane Stage throughout the final day at the fest. But there was a dramatic difference between the small crowd gathered to watch Greensky and some of the much more successful modern country acts holding court nearby. Unlike the persistently loud crowd chatter that seemed to accompany every note on the big stage, fans who were on hand to view Anders Beck (dobro), Michael Arlen Bont (banjo), Paul Hoffman (mandolin), Mike Devol (bass) and David Bruzza (guitar) were actually listening to their tunes. Watching Greensky Bluegrass perform the title song from its new album “Handguns,” with Hoffman’s voice carrying the song’s beautiful alt-country melody in spades and the rest of the band orchestrating the piece with articulate phrasing, I couldn’t believe
more listeners weren’t on hand. “Tied Down” benefited from a similarly rich approach to songcraft and dynamics. Later, The Band Perry took the Mane Stage to thunderous applause and genuine enthusiasm from country fans around me, but the trio’s set was only casually entertaining. Kimberly Perry is a high-energy performer who hits all the high notes, but the group’s songs were simply too saccharine for my taste. And in truth, the trio’s backing 4-man band did the heavy musical lifting. Roy Clark got me feeling real again. At 79, the former host of “Hee Haw” is slowing down a bit but left few fans disappointed during his 45-minute set. With his winning personality, gift for wisecracks and genuine gratitude, he led his strong band through a wealth of classic material that blended traditional country and bluegrass in a set that showcased both singalong and instrumentals. Before he hosted Hee Haw, Clark actually first gained fame for his musical chops on banjo, guitar, fiddle and mandolin. On Sunday afternoon, he shared his stillmighty picking skills on a sharp version of “Ghost Riders in the Sky” and later exhibited how his aged baritone could nevertheless touch hearts with a rich vocal performance of “Yesterday, When I Was Young.” He also performed his polka-tinged hit “Thank God and Greyhound,” much to the delight of the fans. While high-energy sets from Crow and Paisley closed out the event on Sunday night, the last performance that really struck me was the powerful one from Kenny Rogers, now 73. He packed the Palomino with fans young and old, most singing along with his endless stream of timeless hits including “Coward of the County,” “We’ve Got Tonight,” “The Gambler,” “Lucille” and many more. The spirited connection between a legendary artist and an audience looking for meaning in the songs continues to be at the heart of country music.

orango Valley – i was never a “dog-person.” I like freedom to travel, work late, go to happy hour, sleep in, spontaneously stay overnight at my boyfriend’s house, and all of the things that make dog walks and feeding schedules a hassle. Besides, dogs are smelly, hairy, noisy, and a host of many other annoyances; why would I want to add the responsibility of a canine roommate to my already over-booked life? A gut-wrenching, soul-smashing break-up with a relationshipphobic, pet-avoiding boyfriend did the trick. I must admit when my friend Felicia told me I should get a dog, I audibly scoffed (and probably cussed). It was the most ridiculous suggestion I had ever heard; but being freshly dumped, I agreed to go visit animal shelters with her. It was miserable; all 5 visits ended in more tears, loneliness, and a touch of nausea from the acrid smell of the kennels. Suddenly, it happened. In the middle of a busy intersection, he appeared. He was scared, skinny, tag-less, and far from neutered, but agile enough to dodge the tires of fast moving cars. I prompted Felicia to stop her Prius by screaming “There’s a perfectly good free dog right there!” I got out of the car, suddenly aware of my acute lack of “dog skills,” and leaned towards the skittish, 4-pound-puppy without
knowing what to say, or how to wrangle him out of traffic. He promptly jumped into my arms, wriggling and whining. I’m pretty sure the feeling I experienced is akin to the scene in “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” where the angry, jaded, Grinch’s heart grows three sizes larger. I had re-discovered love. I didn’t take him to the pound right away; I was enjoying his company. I fantasized about cool, cryptic names for him like “Voldermort,” and “Captain Wiggles.” As a Southern woman, however, guilt took over, and I couldn’t help but wonder if somebody was missing him (albeit a “somebody” who hadn’t fixed him, given him a tag, or feed him enough). The staff at the pound deemed him a healthy chihuahuadachshund mix; I deemed his crossbreed “chiweenie.” After 5 days at the pound without any attempts from previous owners to retrieve him, the chiweenie puppy became officially mine. I gladly shelled out the cash for his vet bills, acquired supplies, and named him “Duende” (“small magical creature” in Spanish, and “dwarf” in Tagalog). Duende has stolen my heart. He rides with me on my bike, sits on my

shoulder while I type, and sleeps close to me at night. He is athletic, affectionate, protective and mischievous. Recently, Duende became a big brother. I rescued another neglected, un-claimed toy-sized dog from a busy street. Daisy is a 5 pound Maltese mix who idolizes her brother, snores like a freight train, and is the “yin” to Duende’s “yang.” I have a happy little family now; my new boyfriend adores my dogs, and doesn’t mind looking for dog-friendly vacations. I should probably call Felicia and tell her she was right.

The variety of festivals in our desert - of music and community events - is not over yet. Eat Me Gourmet Morongo Valley, CA- The first thing I noticed about Willie Boys is the wonderful ambiance. The owners have created the look and feel of an old time saloon both inside and out, without all the bar brawls and unsavory characters hanging around. The hostess was friendly and the server was prompt with my cold beer. My mouth began watering in anticipation for the memories of my southern youth when I discovered fired pickles and fried okra on the long style menu. When the appetizers arrived the pickles

where warm and juicy. Delicious!!! If you’ve never had one, trust me, you wont ever want a boring old simple dill pickle again. But unfortunately the fried okra was a bit on the bland side. Not bad, just not as good as the pickles. For the main event I chose something that is a bit different than their usual BBQ and meat based items; a portabella mushroom sandwich. It’s refreshing they offer an alternative menu so that even us vegetarians can enjoy a fun place like this.

Our Cars Coachella Valley, CA – Keeping our cars in dependable, drivable condition is a necessity. Here in the Coachella Valley we are somewhat isolated by the distance and the cost of fuel used to get us to the more metropolitan areas of Riverside, San Bernardino and Los Angeles which have a wider selection of maintenance shops and facilities available. We are, thus, dependent on local automotive service facilities. There are a full range of dealerships available for the purchase and maintenance of new or newer cars here in the valley. For a new car the usual best procedure is to follow the factory recommended maintenance schedule. Some new car prices include the maintenance costs for up to 50,000 or 100,000 miles as an.“incentive ,” for the buyer to feel secure and dependent on the dealer. Service agreements are generally honored by the equivalent dealer than the one who sold the car. This is important in a mobile society such as we have here in the valley where many are part time residents. Many of our part-time residents ship their cars here when they come in the fall and ship them home again when they leave in
the spring. Right now, at the end of April and beginning of May one can generally see the 18 wheel big rig transport trucks picking up cars for return near the country clubs, and in other areas of Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert and La Quinta. Most cars today are much more dependable than was the case a number of years ago. It is not unusual to see clean, well-running cars of 10 to 20 years of age with somewhere between 100,000 and 200,000 miles providing dependable every day service. For those of us who own or prefer a dependable older car, or have a collector car, there are the issues of where to have the maintenance work done with dependability and reasonable cost? We are fortunate to have here in the Coachella Valley a number of independent service shops, which can provide what is needed. There are shops such as OMAG Automotive & Machine in Palm Springs, which can take care of a collector car or a modern car. Whether it is a 1955 Porsche, a 1950s or 1960s Rolls Royce, Bentley or Jaguar, a 1940s or 1950s Chevrolet, the people at OMAG will get it right and honor their work.

The sandwich was hot, thick and flavorful. The side of sweet-potato fries where a perfect accompaniment to the sandwich. For dessert I decided on an old favorite and chose the apple crumble. It was everything a good desert should be; warm, gooey and oh so sweet. The mixture of sweet and tart apples in a spicy brown sugar sauce was perfect. The additional ‘crumble’ on top made my eyes water with glee. I never once had to wait for a beer or a refill of my water.
For the often seen 100,000, mile plus Lexus, Nissan, Cadillac, Mercedes, Audi, Ford, Honda or whatever, there are shops such as Kim’s Automotive on Joni Drive, in Palm Desert which do a great job of keeping these good higher mileage cars as “good as new.” The geography of the American West seems to be in conflict with the impact of the countries current leadership. The distance between desired destinations and the nature of our work and lives has made Americans into a flexible and mobile population. The de-facto method which developed over the last 100 plus years has been that government built roads with the tax money we provided and individuals purchased and maintained the flexible transportation vehicles which can go anywhere on the roads made available. We are now in the midst of the huge upswing in the cost of our personal transportation. Here in the golf oriented Coachella Valley we are over 100 miles from the population base of our largest audience. Certainly gas prices have had an impact on our tourism business. Palm Springs, CA - On Wednesday, April 25, the 1st Tee of Coachella Valley was given a check for $21,000 from the Clinton Foundation for Humana Challenge. The total earned for the event was $2 million bring the grand total through out the years to $52 million. Formerly known as the Bob Hope Classic, the 1st Tee by PGAT tour golf tournament began 53 years ago and helps out over 40 charities. Golfer Scott McCarron held a golf for 50 children and donated several personal items including his own golf clubs used in various tournaments over his career.. The executive director Glenn Miller was happy with the turnout and record earning money earned for charity this year.

COD Things are getting a bit “sketchy” on the campus of College of the Desert as the C.O.D. Dramatic Arts Company prepares to close out the academic school year with a raucous night of original sketch comedy, music, and dance. The cast of C.O.D. LIVE returns for a second year to the Pollock Theatre for ONE NIGHT ONLY in what promises to be the rowdiest theatre going experience of the year! Ham and Cheese on Wry… Coachella Valley, CA – Almost everyday I travel on Interstate 10 from one end of the valley to the other, and back. It’s a great conduit – the most direct route from point A to point B. No lights. No intersections. No people pulling out of driveways, running red lights, or otherwise encroaching on my right of way. For once I feel like the king of the road. The manifest destiny of “See the USA in a Chevrolet” has finally come true. For an L.A. transplant, I-10 seemed like a motorists dream. Wide open spaces, lots of lanes, hardly any traffic. You could move around, change lanes easily if things started to tighten up. There were nice off ramps and decent signage. In short, I-10 was more than just the main artery through the Valley, it was the means to a fast, trouble-free, ride across town. Over the last couple of years, I have noticed the traffic on I-10 seems to be increasing, and moreover, the size of the vehicles and their payloads seems to be increasing too. I’ve seen trucks carrying huge pieces of equipment, transformers, giant windmill blades, military equipment, and other unidentifiable objects. The common thread is they are all HUGE. And, add into the mix the ever increasing assortment of giant, oversized gazillion dollar RV’s, hauling everything from little runabout cars, to boats, trailers and SUV’s. I-10 is the major thoroughfare from west to east. It starts in Santa Monica, California, and runs across the country to Jacksonville, Florida, transversing Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and all the gulf states in the deep south. It is one of the major shipping routes for goods arriving at the port of Los Angeles on their way across the country. Through most of the Coachella Valley, I-10 consists of four lanes running in each direction. That is a total of eight lanes, not counting long on-ramps and off-ramps designed to permit motorists to get up to the speed of traffic or slow down when exiting – a good idea to prevent nasty pileups at the exits. Nowadays, there seems to be no shortage of traffic, especially truck traffic. I remember when large semi’s were relegated to the far right lane, only occasionally escaping to pass a slow poke truck in front of them. Now, it seems like the trucks are taking up most of the right two lanes, and even escaping into the third lane for passing when traffic slows below 70 in the right two lanes. It is a very uncomfortable feeling to be sandwiched between two big trucks, weaving around, pushing over the speed limit, their wheels spinning and whizzing at your side, with the realization that in one errant second you could become mere tire-goo to one of these giant mobile monsters. A blowout, a mechanical failure, a last second correction to avoid a collusion, a distraction in the cab, a ‘hey, good buddy’ call on the CB radio,
any little thing could result in a hellacious collision. It’s very spooky out there, and it’s getting worse. Add into the mix the usual assortment of impatient drivers, the giant SUV’s darting around, the increasing speed of the general flow of traffic, and the speed-demons who routinely push 100 mph. The daily commute has turned into a steeplechase, and it’s getting worse. So, what’s the solution. The first thing that hits me is simple to contemplate, although not so easy to implement. Why not just separate the cars from the trucks on I-10 going through the populated areas of the Coachella Valley. There are currently eight lanes total, four each way through the heart of the Valley. Why can’t I-10 be divided into two discrete 4-lane highways, one for trucks, the other for cars and passenger traffic. That way the battle of the road-warriors would at least be a fair fight. Truck vs. Truck Car vs. Car. No weight or size advantage for either combatant. Another possibility is to split off an I-10 truck route running parallel to I-10, but some distance away from the existing

freeway. There is no reason why big trucks need to be cohabitating with small passenger cars. Give them their own truck route. Perhaps Varner Road might be a good choice. Just add a few lanes and a couple of truck stops along the way. Oh, and amid prospects that CVAG might actually get their cross-valley bike path approved, they could just tag on a new truck route as well. Bicyclists, truckers and nature lovers. DRUM CIRCLE UNDER THE STARS
T
he Joshua Tree Retreat Center at the Institute of Mentalphysics will host another of their successful Community Drum Circles on Sunday, May 20, from 7 – 9 p.m. The gathering, facilitated by well-known Morongo Basin percussionist Sam Sloneker, will celebrate the New Moon and will be held outdoors on the patio in front of the center’s Sanctuary (the building with the spire); in the event of rain, high winds, or cold, the circle will move indoors. “Ah, springtime!” says Sloneker. “I’m looking forward to our first circle this year to move outside under our beautiful HiDesert canopy of stars. Legend identifies the New Moon as a particularly auspicious time—a time of birth and beginnings, a time to plant seeds, to start new projects, to begin relationships—and it often brings us a burst of dynamic and creative energy. “All are welcome and can benefit from participating—from beginning beginners to seasoned professional musicians. Along with group drumming, with lots of room for self-expression, we will do some simple and fun exercises designed to enhance our playing and listening skills and to increase
our awareness of our vital life energies. It’s a wonderful time for a community drum circle, and drumming together is an experience that can take us all right back to our creative and expressive roots, so come play with us, and bring your family and friends to share in our merriment!” Participants are encouraged to bring drums, shakers, tambourines, etc.—a number of instruments will also be available at the event. There is no charge to attend, although a suggested donation of $5 per participant or $10 per family will be gratefully received and appreciated. Studies have shown participation in group drumming to offer a number of worthwhile benefits, including artistic self-expression, community connection and interaction, an expanded sense of self and heightened sense of belonging, increased rapport with others, relief of stress, emotional balancing, and strengthening of the immune system. We all do it, some with more enthusiasm than others, some better and some longer. This leads to the mental anxiety and voices running through our heads when we should be relaxing and enjoying the pleasure of human touch. Instead of rejoicing in another’s embrace, we are wondering if he will think we are hideous and run away, despite this has never happened in the history of human sex.
