Indio, CA - Country music is known for three things: good booze, pretty women, and real good men. This year’s Stagecoach is not lacking in any of these categories. For starters the whiskey and beer will be plentiful enough to quench even Toby Keith’s thirsty desires. The sun will be high in the desert sky, so be sure to drink water in between each alcoholic beverage, after all, you do want to see all of the concert, don’t you?

T

he ladies of Stagecoach this year are quite an impressive bunch. Miranda Lambert is headlining along side her man, Blake Shelton. Sarah Evans, Sherly Crow and Martina McBride are just a few of the spectacular strong women who are hitting the stage this year along side the plethora of male performers. Now for the main event, the men of country will once again be taking over Indio. With headliners Brad Paisley, Jason Aldean and aforementioned, Blake Shelton, the testosterone will be running high. When looking at the run down of acts, one can’t help but notice there are about eight men per female performer. What must it be like backstage with all those good lookin’ pranksters running around and all the guy-pallin’ brotherhood? One might almost feel sorry for the gals performing. This year they have to compete not only the usual suspects like legends Kenny Rogers and Alabama, but there are some added known jokers in the bunch like Justin Moore, silver-haired fox Steve Martin, who will be playing banjo with his group the Steep Canyon Rangers and the sexy crooner Chris Isaak (see page 5 for an in-depth interview). Country star Tim McGraw (who is not performing) best summed up this group when he sang, “I may be a real bad boy, but baby, I’m a real good man.” Amen. Our Cars

By Paul Merrigan

Palm Springs, CA - Love them or hate them we are tied to our automobiles. We are dependent upon them for getting about to pursue our work, obtain our food and clothing and in general participate in life today. With gas at over $4.00 per gallon, California roads showing the deterioration of massive governmental neglect, and the purchase effects of general inflation taking away most discretionary spending funds, we have a dependent love hate relationship with the automobile.

Few developments of mans inventiveness have had the sociological and life style impact that the automobile has brought about in the last 110 years. The much smaller U.S. population of the 100 year past was divided into those living in dense city areas who traveled the short distances to work and recreation by trolley, train and by foot. The bulk of the U.S. population were part of the small farm based agroeconomy and traveled by horse drawn carriage, horse back, or train. Life for all was closer to home and less flexible than today. The automobile was a big part of what changed all of that. With the population growth and immigration from troubled and more crowded areas of the world the U.S. offered stimulation of peoples sense of freedom, opportunity and exploration.

Nothing stimulated the interest in exploration of surroundings near and far, as did the automobile. The car brought, and still brings, a euphoric sense of freedom of individual movement unknown before this time period. We can read writings from the past of people having the sense of freedom given them by being able to own and ride a horse. But that freedom of movement was limited to twenty or so miles a day. And when you got done you still had to arrange to feed, water and stable the horse before you could sit down. Automotive pollution is a common catch phrase today but health and safety is a lot better with the car than it was for those moving about on streets contaminated with a continual fresh application of horse manure. How long is it

since you heard of anyone contacting a case of Tetanus. Some years ago I heard a very elderly lady rebut a politically correct reporter who was chastising her for her expressed love of the automobile. The reporter cited, “The terrible pollution caused by the automobile”. The elderly lady, who knew where of she spoke, said, “Young woman, you cannot understand what real pollution is unless you have driven a six horse team”. There are the downside issues of congestion, costs of maintenance, parking and storage, accidents and much more. However, the car lets us work where we need to, travel where we want to, have a sense of pride of possession in an appealing, non animate object which provides service.

It matters little if it is a twenty year old Toyota or a new Bentley, we have a special relationship with our car. We will in this column ramble and explore the world of which our automobiles are an integral component.

Letters to the editor Dear Editor, Many have waited patiently for the answer to the world food problem and are convinced that eating tropical fish is a valid solution. Tropical fish, high in protein have enhanced characteristics, such as iridescence and brilliant colors, are tasty and useful but have somehow been clouded by the misconception that they are somehow “cute” like a Nemo Fish and therefore unfit for human consumption. Cat food, maybe. But few of us humans find delight in dining on a plateful of goldfish. This must change. Fear is baseless. We must overcome the Nemo. As world fisheries become depleted, with good old fishing holes drying up, the hungry of the world are turning to tropical fish aquariums easily set up in living rooms as a receptacle for food. Think of it as a wet refrigerator wit bubbles. Perhaps our desert might appeal to those of us aware of the need for progressive reform concerning the psychology of fish consumption. We are coming out of the closet with open arms to embrace the desert community and to spread the word. We may not be Gallalie but with the strength of our unity can multiply tropical fish to feed the masses of the planet. Despite the Nemo factor. Ed Warltch, Rancho Mirage HI .. My co-workers are always loud and when I try to hush them so I can do my work, I am looked at like I have 3 heads. I can’t be the only one with this problem. What do you think? Sincerely, Misery Wants Company in Yucca Valley Dear Editor, I find the criticism being focused by a previous city leader on an issue regarding personal problems that should have been solved but were neglected until now disappointing. The agitation and allegations against these big profile people was brought forth by your paper and was refreshing to read despite no action taken by the city. I hope someone who is with the city staff is trying to correct the problems in regards to this embarrassment. As a private citizen, I do not condone the mistakes and actions made and feel we as a city need to try and represent a more wholesome image for all of us. Thank You, Lottie Paige from Palm Desert

Feeling Lucky with Chris Isaak www.DesertStarWeekly.com

By Laura Anne Rowell

Palm Desert, CA - When listening to Chris Isaak’s latest CD of covers, “Beyond the Sun” you realize how perfectly tuned his vocals are. Best known for his sexy hit video and song “Wicked Games”, however, this is to sell Mr Isaak short in the arena of talent, for there is more than just movie star good looks behind this blue-eyed crooner.

H

is early influences included Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Bing Crosby. He recalls, “I used to go with my mom to the second hand shop and she would buy clothes and stuff there and while she shopped I would go through all the records. I was always listening to old records, odd records, stuff that was out of style at the moment...I remember getting a stack of records and going home and just playing them all and hoping to hear that special song that made you just go “ahhhh!”.” Chris Isaak’s passion for playing music was ignited not only by the old greats, but mostly by his older brother, Nick, who taught himself to play the harmonic guitar. “I remember seeing him just pick up a guitar, tune it up, and start playing. ...Like a lot of thing, you just have to take off your shoes and jump in. I wouldn’t say I was naturally good, but I really, really LOVED it right away. I could play two cords for an hour and be having a ball.” Despite Chris’s love for the guitar he didn’t dare dream of making it as a famous singer, instead he spent much of his teen years in the gym training and fighting as a light-heavy weight boxer. His family was by no means wealthy and always seemed to be struggling to pay bills, keep the car going and just to get by. But there was one defining moment in Chris’s life that changed everything, “The first time I was in a secondhand store in Stockton where I grew up, I picked up a 45 record and it had a funny label of yellow sun rays. “I’ll Never let You Go” was the song and I just remember thinking it was the prettiest thing I ever heard. I didn’t know about where it came from. I didn’t know about Sam Phillips. I just knew when I played

that record it took me away, way out there. Then a few years later I was boxing in Japan and I found a record in a little shop and it was “Elvis Sun Sessions.” That was it. I didn’t know there was more than a 45 record of that kind of music, but hearing it all...I just started singing all those songs and started growing out my short hair. It almost got me kicked off the boxing team, but my coach said I could let my hair grow as long as I kept winning my bouts. I think I knew I just wanted to to sing like that, to make music like

might be surprised that Chris doesn’t have any superstitions like so many of his counterparts. When asked about it he laughs and says, “Never carry open gas cans on the forth of July. Don’t eat mayonnaise that was made the year you were born. ...I’m not a superstitious guy really. I’m pretty pragmatic, straightforward thinking type of guy. If I have bad “luck” I figure I must have forgotten to plan for something!” Chris must have planned pretty well considering where his “luck” has landed him. His humor prevails as he tells me that he is wanted in in seven states and that the rest are undecided. But after twenty-seven years of playing with the same guys, the music and gigs just keeps getting better. When asked what his favorite crowd has been over the years, he answers modestly, “...I guess some of the festivals, they get pretty big. Best crowd....I don’t know. Usually the crowd is good no matter where we play. You just gotta be good too...if you suck then the crowd is gonna let you know it! They never lie.” You can see just how good Chris Isaak and his band is at the Stagecoach Festival this weekend that. I didn’t have any big plans, I just knew I April 27-29. wanted to make music. I never looked back.” Since then Chris has had an amazing musical career that most would envy, including singing with some of his hero’s, In fact Roy Orbison befriended his younger protegee and both Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis asked Chris to join them for a session or two. “The great thing about this job is I get to work with the people I would otherwise be paying to go see!” Lee Rayburn Show Having finally made it to the big times, you

coachella By Robert Kinsler

Indio, CA - Everyone has a different Coachella experience. Many brave impossible elements or fatigue to catch as many performances as possible while others are fanatic about a specific artist and trek out to Indio for a single performance. Still others come to view the fantastic artwork, watch for celebrities, party with friends or for no other reason than to say “I was at Coachella” (even if that means they attended a party in far-off Palm Springs and never actually set foot on the Empire Polo Club grounds in Indio). For the record I have always come to Coachella to catch some of my favorite artists in the most thrilling of settings and for the joy of discovering great artists for the first time. After catching all or part of eight sets on

Friday, nine on Saturday and another nine on Sunday, here are some highlights of my sonic journey through Weekend 2 (April 20-22) of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. I’m glad I arrived at the Coachellafest first thing because Friday’s finest moments came early in the day. Don’t get me wrong; I did enjoy seeing Pulp, Mazzy Star and the Black Keys in their respective turns that would come after dark, but a string of incredible performances from Los Angeles Americana outfit honeyhoney, the eclectic Oklahomabased Other Lives, singer-songwriter-guitar virtuoso Gary Clark Jr., country-folk rockers Dawes (whose “Time Spent in Los Angeles” and “Fire Away” simply rocked live) and genredefying singer-songwriter-guitarist M. Ward set the perfect pace for me over the day. With the exception of the experimental rock of the Jesse Tabish-led Other Lives, the wealth of roots music artists who were featured on Friday really were terrific. Dawes recalled classic Crosby, Stills and Nash, while Clark Jr. floored a packed Gobi tent over the course of 55 magical minutes with potent blues rockers like “When My Train Pulls In” and “Don’t Owe You a Thang.” Anyone who loves blues rock needs to discover this

amazing Austin, Texas based artist. Saturday’s wide-ranging schedule yielded similarly-thrilling sets from early performers as well, although Coachella-goers had to contend with some of the highest fest temperatures in memory. Indeed, while checking weather conditions just prior to Grace Potter and the Nocturnals’ 3:40 p.m. set time I saw 106 listed as the current temp for Indio, a far cry from the cold and rain that had marked weekend 1 of the festival a week earlier. But baking in the sun was made a bit easier thanks to staff hosing down those positioned near the front of the Outdoor Theatre, the spot where I caught three solid performances. Orange County-based Suedehead’s hardcharging sound recalled Paul Weller’s The Jam while We Were Promised Jetpacks blended postpunk and ‘80’s alt rock into a rousing mix. The aforementioned Potter and company opened with the infectious singalong “Paris (Ooh La La).” Potter strummed away on her electric guitar while nailing high notes with her amazing soprano on the way through a 40-minute performance that boasted the depth and range of a full-length concert set. Highlights included the blues-rock of “Stop the Bus” and a musical tribute to the recently-deceased Band drummer Levon Helm. While the weather (thankfully) cooled a bit as the sun began to set, the intensity of the music making side of things never let up. From the energetic Kaiser Chiefs and U.K. power pop masters Squeeze, to Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and Portland-based the Shins, the day and evening brought one breathtaking set after another. Squeeze performed with a fire and intensity of an up-and-coming band, unleashing versions of timeless favorites including “Black Coffee in Bed,” “Pulling Mussels (from the Shell)” and “Is That Love” on the Mojave stage. Not long after, James Mercer led the Shins through a set that was the perfect setup for what was to come on the main stage throughout the rest of the night. Along with the delight of hearing the Shins perform a winning version of Neil Young’s gem “Helpless,” additional standouts came via the group’s terrific new album “Port of Morrow” (notably the infectious upbeat “Simple Song” and decidedly sad tune “It’s Only Life”). Following the Shins, Bon Iver played a 55-minute set that showcased the group’s blend of folk, alt-country and indie sensibilities as the faithful cheered. Singer-songwriter-guitarist Justin Vernon displayed a musical style that

often would find a quiet folk song grow into a neo-grunge roar. The stunning Bon Iver opener “Perth” (with its amazing guitar line and hushed intro layered with Vernon’s falsetto vocals) was my favorite track of his set, but “Holocene” reached an almost similar depth. Radiohead performed a marvelous two-hour concert to finish off Saturday in grand fashion, featuring mostly-recent material off the troupe’s last two studio albums (2007’s “In Rainbows” and 2011’s “The King of Limbs”) and some classic favorites, notably “Karma Police” and the nightending “Paranoid Android.” The English quintet, led by its charismatic front man Thom Yorke, utilized their experimental musical instincts and technology to enhance (rather than detract) from their concert show. With dazzling lights and a multitude of revolving projection screens, Radiohead immersed the crowd in an experience that was as much art as music. Weighty stuff that felt just right at Coachella. I got to the festival far earlier than I thought on day three so I was able to catch most of Gardens

& Villa’s set inside the Mojave tent. Until Sunday I never heard a group combine Thomas Dolbystyled ‘80s electronica with traditional Native American flute music. “Black Hills” mixed up a goth soundscape with a driving rhythm that got early birds moving to the music out on the grassy dance floor. Few who had gathered to watch Gardens & Villa left the Mohave tent once Brooklyn-based Oberhofer arrived on the scene with their own high-energy approach. The quartet’s direction was mostly set on fun. Lead singer Brad Oberhofer injected some real life drama when he climbed high on the stage frame to throw flowers down into the enthusiastic crowd. Even frustrating technical woes resulting in First Aid Kit’s keyboards not working properly did not dampen enthusiasm for the Swedish duo. Performing songs from both their “The Big Black & the Blue” debut and new sophomore effort “The Lion’s Roar,” the siblings’ shining harmonies and authentic ‘70s country folk was a joy. I predict very big things for these young sisters from Stockholm. The wide-range of styles of artists who perform at Coachella is an obvious attraction for music lovers. Sunday’s finale summed that up clearly. I caught the indie R&B-flavored pop ensemble Fitz and the Tantrums (who shared a splendid reworking of the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams”), the high-powered attack of Sweden’s The Hives (I loved the band’s new single “Go Right Ahead”), and the perfect set from Florence + the Machine (featuring singer Florence Welch) with dramatic crowd pleasers like “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up).” Welch finally ended a seemingly-flawless hourlong set with the beautiful and involving “No Light, No Light.” Another Coachella to remember.

P

alm Desert, CA - Hey Star Readers! I appreciate all of the demand letters, picketing and riots that occurred during my hiatus. Very much appreciated, just call me next time. Anyway, I am always on the lookout for good ethnic foods. I do not care what Continent, which village, how unsanitary, disturbing or delightful it is, as long as it’s different and not fast food then I am making a reservation. Speaking of reservations, I have a few of my own when it comes to Asian cuisine. Being from Boston, there were always Cantonese or “cheap Chinese”, Vietnamese or “the noodle pho a hangover”, Japanese or “samurai fisherman” and yes, Thai. I have always been intrigued by clean, crisp, vibrant ingredients. Thai is where it’s at. In fact, my wife thinks that she is owed Thai food for just waking up in the morning,.so I eat and cook my fair share. Now, I know because I was opposed to fast food a few words ago, I am going to regret saying this; Pick Up Stix, I know, but I liked it. Sorry. So I went to order my orange peel chicken and brown rice with a mountain dew and no, noo, NOOOOO! It was gone. Blue Orchid was now the current resident. Was this a flower shop? A front for some major underground Pick Up Stix

fan club? As I opened the door I immediately apologized to the girl waiting tables as she walked by. She said, “ohhhh, kaaaay” as in this guy is really creepy. I felt it was only right even though I was the only one who cared about my cursing and shady insinuations a few moments ago. The place was clean, fresh, smelled like lime, ginger, galangal (like ginger, a root. Almost looks like a sunchoke which is used in Asian cooking as a milder alternative to ginger. Makes great teas as well) and tea. Completely Zombieesque, I sat down and ordered a Thai Iced Tea which was perfectly sweet and creamy with just enough zip. I then ordered the Seafood Fried Rice, which had calamari, shrimp, egg, scallion and a fried soft shell crab on top! My first thought was, “this is good.” My second thought was, “wait a minute it isn’t soft shell season?” Nonetheless the quality and presentation was there. I continued to order, I had the Thai salad which was standard iceberg, chunks and tomato but the peanut dressing is by far the best Thai Dressing I’ve ever had. Next was the Kao Pad with shrimp, sauteed veggies, steamed shrimp and rice. A perfect dish for the health conscious which I am not, so I threw it down the gullet fast enough not have to worry about it anymore.

Very tasty though. The other advantage over the competition is the sauces. There was a green chile sauce, a siracha, a Thai chili paste, soy and ponzu. As a chef, a really overcharged dude and short attention span kind of guy, I tend to pick up or take things to go. This is always the biggest test for me. I want it to taste the same if I’m driving with my knees, on my phone and smoking a cigarette or if I am eating it by candlelit at the restaurant. Sorry, just how I need it to be. So I went last night and called ahead. They were on to me I think. The usually over yet genuinely friendly staff were even making me blush with the polite and attentive display. People eating

were looking at me like I was holding the place up or something. Pretty funny but very cool. It passed, same goodness on the couch as in the booth. Good Job Blue Orchid. Blue Orchid Thai Bistro (760) 776 6610 Open 7 days 11-9 p.m. 73030 El Paseo, Suit 102, Palm Desert 92260

and Wine with

Palm Desert – April 20, 2012 Have you ever been afraid that you might order the wrong kind of wine on a first date? Or maybe bring the red to your in-laws home when white was a better choice? Well, the 3rd Corner Wine Shop and Bistro are having an event to help answer some of these quandaries.

E

ducating 3rd Corner diners on the fine points of enjoying wine is important to owner Ed Moore, who will be hosting the first, “Wine Education Wine Maker Dinner” with DRAGONETTE CELLARS on April 25 at 6pm. The cost for this four-course food and wine pairing dinner is $70 plus taxes and gratuity. One of the missions of 3rd Corner, besides offering great food and amazing wine prices, is wine education. Introducing diners to up and coming wineries and winemakers are a key part of this education. There are so many wines in this world and not even wine magazines such as the Wine Spectator can scratch the surface of tasting them all. The next six months at the 3rd Corner is going to be about new wines, new wineries and new regions. “It’s easy to

do the same old stuff. Identifying different regions and what grows well there is exciting. Combining that with multiple producers gives us the desire to try something new. When I can use an entire country or an entire region, I can show people that there are so many great wines

One of the missions of 3rd Corner, besides offering great food and amazing wine prices, is wine education. and how they in-turn pair with the local cuisine. Continually demystifying wine allows us to enjoy so many more wines,” explains Moore. In addition to tasting fine wines including Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Rose from

Dragonette Santa Ynez and Santa Rita Hills vineyards, Wine Maker, and co-owner Brandon Sparks-Gillis will be at the dinner educating diners on his wines and owning and operating a winery. Dargonette’s owners John Dragonette, Steve Dragonette and Brandon Sparks-Gillis personally pursued the ultimate wine dream and are considered serious “cork dorks.” All three men left lucrative careers as they were smitten by the “wine and food bug” and have realized their dream of owning and operating a successful winery in Santa Ynez. The 3rd Corner Wine Shop is located at 73101 Highway 111 in Palm Desert. For more information call 760-837-9600 or visit www. the3rdcorner.com

comestothe desert Palm Desert, CA – The College of the Desert Performing Arts department is proud to present a true musical theatre phenomenon, Jekyll & Hyde. The gothic masterpiece attracted legions of loyal fans even before the show began its smash-hit Broadway run.

A

n evocative tale of the epic battle between good and evil, Jekyll & Hyde is based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story about a brilliant doctor whose experiments with human personality create a murderous counterpart. Convinced the cure for his father’s mental illness lies in the separation of Man’s evil nature from his good, Dr. Henry Jekyll unwittingly unleashes his own dark side, wreaking havoc in the streets of late 19th century London as the savage, maniacal Edward Hyde. The haunting score features music by Frank Wildhorn (The Scarlet Pimpernel) and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse (Victor/Victoria, Doctor Doolittle, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory). This COD Performing Arts production is fully staged and features the complete Broadway orchestration. The talented cast (comprised of numerous DTL award winners and nominees) features Mark Almy as Dr. Henry Jekyll & Edward Hyde, Kaley Smith as Lucy Harris, Natalie Gilbert as Emma Carew, Frank Haggard as John Utterson, and Tim Bruneau as Sir Danvers Carew. Other cast members include: Lou Galvan, Ashton Loyo, Rick Doerfler, Dale Jean Covington, Ramon Martinez, Kelly McDaniel, David Middleton, Stacey Mills, Carrick O’Dowd, Marcos Perez, Jake Phillips, Deborah Rubin, Judi Russo, Rick Schaffner, Vince Urbani, and Raul Valenzuela. For ticket information and reservations, call the McCallum Theatre box office at 760-340-ARTS or visit online at www. mccallumtheatre.com.

Future of City Property to Be Decided Desert Hot Springs, CA – The Desert Hot Springs RDA Successor Agency Oversight Board met for the first time on April 11. The Board selected Mr. Russ Martin to serve as Chairperson and Mr. John Aguilar to serve as Vice-Chair.

At this meeting, the Oversight Board approved the City’s Recognized Obligation Payment Schedule (ROPS) and authorized City staff to draft agreements between the city and the RDA Successor Agency, pursuant to the ROPS and subject to review and approval by the Oversight Board. For many years California cities relied on their city Redevelopment Agencies for administering funds generated by taxes and dispersed by Sacramento. These Redevelopment Agencies were often officiated by the city council deciding on the direction of the agency and use of the funding.

Some cities were criticized for free spending. Palm Desert used RDA funds for a golf course. Desert Hot Springs used RDA funds for code enforcement. Both these cities and Riverside County were admonished by John Chang, the State Controller. The Desert Hot Springs Redevelopment Agency used redevelopment funds to purchase vacant lots all over the city in addition to several blocks of buildings in the downtown core. Since Redevelopment Agencies has been disbanded the future of these real properties will be decided by the Oversight Board.

The next Oversight Board Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 2. Subsequent meetings are scheduled to take place on the second Wednesday of each month. All meetings will be held at the Carl May Community Center, located at 11711 West Dr., Desert Hot Springs at 8:00 A.M. Russ Martin serves on the DHS Public Safety Commission and is a board member of the Mission Springs Water District. John Agular is a former DHS Planning Commissioner for the city and works for the Coachella Valley Housing Coalition.

my twisted

perspective by Laura-Anne Rowell

Joshua Tree, CA - Artist Jack Slomovits was born in Florida, but made his a name for himself as an artist in New York. This former commercial photographer main focus was on lifestyles before turning his attention to erotica art adding a sense of voyeuristic appeal to the photos He was once hailed by Time-Out New York magazine as “The Stare Master.”

H

is career began to escalate to mainstream once he changed his directions by documenting weddings. He was then thrust into the spotlight and featured in numerous major bridal publications. His signature style has been reflected in both aspects of his work that documents intimate and candid moments of his subjects amidst a backdrop of mostly small claustrophobic, shadowy spaces in black and whites. The photographer moved to a new airy expansive home in Yucca Valley and once again changed his focus, but this time from people to nature. As a sun lover, Jack found solace in the trees and objects within the desert that were bathed in sun. The blinding presence was a challenge as well as inspiration in finding ways to mold his new subject matter. His latest work is also his first desert showing that will be held at the Joshua Tree Saloon until June 19 for more info visit www.jackps.com

Palm Springs, CA - “Puppy” wandered into my yard thirteen years ago. She was about a year old Rottweiler/Australian cattle dog mix, 60 pounds of random parts – small head with velvet ears and big, liquid brown eyes; large rib cage; narrow hips; dainty paws; a tail almost lethally enthusiastic.

C

alls to Animal Control and posted flyers produced not a single inquiry, but, already Mama to a 150 pound gorgeous, neurotic Chesapeake Bay Retriever, I wasn’t up for another pet. Weeks turned into months, without my finding either former owners or a new home, and Max calmed down with her companionship. I finally admitted to permanence by renaming her “Ruby.” After about a year together, Max broke down a fence and ran into the path of a car. Ruby mourned him, as I did, for months. We turned to each other, and Ruby became the best buddy a person could hope for. She adored long walks (often 3 miles or more), greeting total strangers as if they were long-lost friends, with a frenzy of delighted whimpers and mad tail-wagging. Favorite games were “chase the light,” (yapping, snapping and racing after a moving flashlight target); retrieving tennis balls, (best if it involved a long swim, and my arm always gave out before she did); chasing squirrels or cats (she was way too slow to be a threat, but I never told her

and a bit of play time. She made human and dog friends wherever she went. As her age and arthritis began to curtail our walks, neighbors would stop by with their dogs to say hello. Even our postmen would take a minute to pet her! She began to prefer more and more time outdoors, even at night, and trained me to give her a treat whenever I made her come in to sleep. Sometimes she’d demand to go back out and come right in again, sitting by her treat box as a “gentle” hint. She became quite vocal over her last few months, yipping to go out, come in, demand water, dinner, attention, the return a ball that rolled out of reach, or just for a good belly rub. I will always remember with gratitude the13 years of loyalty, companionship, amusement Ruby gave me.

so). She despised Harley’s, VW’s, skateboards, helicopters, blimps and wild parrots, “chasing them away” with a very authoritative bark. Ruby loved long car trips, calmly sleeping in back ‘til she needed out. She’d alert me by sitting up; I’d stop, she’d hop out, briskly do her business, and hop back in again. She was an Send your pet angel in motels or friends’ homes, never barking desertstarweekly.com or whining, just curling up after dinner, walk,

April 26 -May 2, 2012

ONENIGHTONLY Rancho Mirage, CA - The One Night Only concert by producer Michael Childers was held at the McCallum Theater for the Performing Arts on April 18th. The event was once again sold out. Famous songs by the Gershwin brothers were among some of the nights favorites that photos and story by Pat Krause were performed.

S

ome of the best known artists from Broadway and Hollywood took the stage including;Lucie Arnaz, Bradley Bahar, Brent Barrett, Angel Blue, David Burnham, Carol Cook, Ann Hampton Callaway, Lorett Devine, Brandon Victor Dixon, Rogelio Douglas Jr., Jason Graae, Alix Korey, Michele Lee, Vicki Lewis, Lypsinka, Marilyn Maye, Freda Payne, Valarie Pettiford, Gary Shaw, Rex Smith, Von SMith, James Snyder, Nita Whitaker, Billy Strich, and the

Voices of Calvary choir. These unbelievable talented people gave a superb performance to standing ovations, loud clapping and yells from the crowd. Calvin Remsberg and Ron Able did an outstanding job directing the show with Ken Katz as the Executive Producer. The concert benefits Jewish Family Services of the Desert and has raised almost 2.5 million dollars for local charities since it started in 2002.

“Ladies of Lincoln’s Era” exhibit

La Quinta, CA - The La Quinta Museum is pleased to introduce the new Ladies of Lincoln’s Era exhibit, highlighting thirteen of the most influ ential women of the 1860’s; opening Friday, May 4 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm.

T

he exhibition features biographies and photographs of 13 courageous women including Rose Greenhow, a spy for the Confederate army, and Sarah Emma Edmonds who spied for the Union army disguised as a man. Mary Todd Lincoln is represented along with her personal seamstress, Elizabeth Keckley, who had been a slave, then purchased her freedom and followed Mrs. Lincoln to the White House. Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman, both born into slavery, spoke for women and slave rights. Sarah Josepha Buell Hale, the founder of Godey’s Ladies’ Book magazine which influenced fashion and cooking at the time, as well as women in the medical profession like Clara Barton, the founder of the American Red Cross, are all portrayed. These women were many things - some highly educated, others self-educated, most outspoken and none boring. An additional feature will be a replica quilt like those made by the U. S. Sanitary Commission for soldiers serving during the Civil War. The U.S. Sanitary Commission supplied the soldiers with many daily necessities

including more than 250,000 quilts. This replica quilt is being supplied by the Home of the Brave Quilt Project, a national grassroots project to honor the service and memory of men and women who have died while on active duty in Afghanistan or Iraq. Try your hand at rolling a bandage, see a lock of Mary Todd Lincoln’s hair and find out what a passementerie is. The Ladies of Lincoln’s Era is a traveling exhibition from the California Exhibition Resources Alliance, originated by the Mission San Juan Capistrano - Orange County’s mission, historic landmark, and museum. The exhibit will run through September 8, 2012 and is free to the public. The La Quinta Museum is located at 77885 Avenida Montezuma (just off Eisenhower) in the historic La Quinta Cove district. The hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. For more information, contact 760.777.7170 and please visit: www.PlayInLaQuinta.com.

astrologicalaffects By Guru Ren Yogamaya, M.A. E-RYT 500

Sun In Taurus:

Most Affected is Taurus and All Earth Signs. The month is in the sign of Taurus. For Taurus: All Venusian themes such as Love, beauty, the senses and food will rule supreme until May 20. A more heightened awareness of family, growth or stubbornness, possessiveness and the pleasures in Life. The best side of Taurus is seen in their home, hospitality, gracious generosity, culinary talents and, their ability to make things grow, whether it be a penny into a dollar or a seed into a flower. The key is to know when to not to remain steadfast, to move a little quicker and to leave justice in the hands of the Universe. For All Signs: Progress may continue at a slower pace. Stubbornness for the right or wrong reason(s) can test patience. Careful evaluation on how financial resources are spent can save money and buy more time. Fortunately, the higher conscious energy of this Sun will remind us to take it at a slower pace (at times cautious), so that we can fully enjoy the benefits of the pleasure principle. Celebrate this month by embracing the senses by learning Pratyahara (devoid of the senses). Best Sacred Geometry: Hexahedron (Earth) Best Yantra: The colors Green and Pink Mercury In Aries

Most Affected are Aries, Gemini and Virgo. This transit began on April 16 and will continue until May 9. For Aries: With the planet of communications and electrical impulses now direct, you may feel a surge of energy moving easily, supporting your communications, travel and gadgetry. For Gemini: Your attention will become sharper and crisper as you move swiftly in most areas of your Life. Be sure to think twice before speaking, or pressing the “go button”. For Virgo: Action in most area of your Life will once again to move forward. Notice a subtle change in your sexuality as well. The sign of Aries may figure more prominently. For All Signs: Fresh ideas may come in to infuse new energy into already established plans and projects. Pent-up energies that seemed stalled or contained may now be released. The challenge is to not rush into action related to speech, travel and communications. The good of this is to see the true, genuine and positive qualities, the wisdom that has been there all along. Venus in Gemini

Most affected are Gemini and All Air Signs (including Libra and Taurus as the planet Venus is their ruling sign). This transit began on April 3 and will continue until August 7, with a retrograde happening in May. For Gemini: The planet of Love and beauty will be in your sign for a long stretch; the first three weeks being the best. Enjoy your new popularity and the good possibility of romantic interests. If you are already involved, this can be a very romantic or creative time for you, one of the best times of the year for your love Life. However, when Venus is in any sign of the Zodiac, the senses are heightened as well. Watch that you don’t over-indulge in food, drink or others. Exercise and refresh yourself: Enjoy an experience for two. Two for the road, Kama-Sutra, Partner Yoga or one dessert, two spoons. For All Signs: The social side of Venus enters changeable Gemini. The energies here are even more

playful or flirtatious. Various, more social people and situations may seem to grab your attention, but only for a little while as in the end substance will win over flightiness. The temptation for air signs “not to…” mirror the classic, Buddhist teachings of “not two” but rather one. Respectfully sticking to the one truth or the one person who is genuine in your Life reflects spiritual maturity. Pluto Retrograde.

Most Affected are Scorpio, Capricorn and Aries. This transit began on April 10 and will continue until September 17. For Scorpio: The energies of your ruling planet turn inward for a long stretch. The challenge is that your usual, powerful drive may be more subdued. The best is the opportunity to turn inward to review, examine your spirituality, emotions and any dark side. For Capricorn: Hard lessons from the past may come back to haunt you. Embrace the good that this has provided. Revisit the lessons and education from the past that will help you in your Life. For Aries: Opportunities related to spirituality or career may feel stalled. It’s only a temporary slow down; consider the possibility that this may work in your favor. For All Signs: We may feel like turning inward, reflecting on our personal or professional resources. The Good of this is that secrets or important, useful information that were hidden may come to light, The challenges are increased insecurities or how to handle the new info. When in doubt, seek clarity, ask or inquire first before taking action and give the benefit of the doubt. Week of April 26 – May 2, 2012: Affects of The New Moon In Taurus

Most affected are Taurus and All Earth Signs. For Taurus: This New Moon occurred on April 21st. This New Moon was in your sign and it continues to set the tone for the next twelve months. Sit, write down what you want to manifest, close your eyes and visualize it. In time, the opportunities will reveal themselves. Also, your energy may surge upward, now you can place more power behind your desired dreams. Use it to benefit your home or Mother Nature, the Earth. Depending on where you place your focus, there is where the success ratio begins. Start with your heart’s intention For All Signs: The action may continue to involve, take place at home or in nature. Release the tendency to be stubborn where important relationships may be affected. Sensual pleasures including culinary talents, sharing a meal with family or a loved one is highlighted. Enjoy nature, honor Mother Earth by being creative. In your meditations, ask for what you need and not for what you want. Best Mantra: YAM Best Color: Green Ren Yogamaya is a Yoga teacher registered at the highest level with the Yoga Alliance, a writer, the published author of the book, EAT BY COLOR: Foods, Colors and The Chakras, a syndicated columnist and she is a natural channel for Universal Light.
