STAR letters Jackie,

Russ Martin, of Mission Springs Water District, wrote in his letter to the Editor, (and stated at last Tuesday’s Desert Hot Springs City Council meeting), that “The Mission Springs Water District does NOT provide ANY water to the Sentinel Plant.” I questioned him about this during a break in the meeting. He told me “Well, you are correct. Technically, we don’t deliver it, but they do take it”, with their four wells. Mr. Martin finds it “odd” that we choose the City Council to speak out. “Odd since the power plant is not in Desert Hot Springs”. But at that same Mar 19 meeting, Mark Daniels of CPV Sentinel announced delivery of $1 million to the city, (latest installment of $2.75 million), with a “thank you for all your help” to the council members. MSWD also received $3.3 million from Sentinel mitigation funds. Maybe that helps explain the mixed messages from the water district. Mr. Martin also asks why we didn’t protest before the plant was being built. “It was announced and covered by all the newspapers and TV.” We protested when we found out. In fact, we have spoken to thousands of Desert Hot Springs residents, with the first question, “Do you know about the power plant being built right outside of town?” The answer is almost always “NO”! Not until WE told them about it! Maybe CPV Sentinel’s secret negotiations with the water district, (and the air quality management district), to “be kept confidential indefinitely in order to ensure protection of the confidential trade secrets and to ensure that ongoing negotiations are not hampered”, have something to do with that. Source: California Energy Commission documents on CPV Sentinel. I attended that Mar 19 meeting to inform the City Council and residents what I had recently found out that Competitive Power Ventures is currently building three plants in Maryland and Virginia. All three are to use reclaimed water. These places are not in the Desert, and not in a prolonged drought. All three are to use a combined-cycle power plant, more efficient and less polluting then the Sentinel. Riverside County, and Desert Hot Springs, did not look very hard for a better deal. I am not blaming Mr. Martin, he is doing what he is told. But the local residents who make up People Over Pollution, and the more than 2,000 residents who have signed our petition, are demanding answers. We are not paid to guard our air and our water, but the elected officials, and the agencies who are paid to do so must be tempted by the millions Sentinel can pay to have them look the other way. Same Sex Marriage: Equality For All It’s time we all started getting better educated on the issue of Same Sex Marriage now that the U.S. Supreme Court is hearing testimony on the issue this week and is expected to make a landmark ruling sometime in June. I was raised by parents who were very prejudiced and biased against just about every minority group in the world. They certainly were against Same Sex Marriage and anything gay because in their lifetime “men were men” and “women knew their place.” But I

I grew up when Woodstock was a worldwide happening and Neil Armstrong landed on the Moon. In 1969, I was 14 years old and watched those two lifechanging events on our new color TV. I wanted to run away and attend Woodstock, but my dad stopped me saying I was too young. Then I dreamed about being an astronaut, but my dad said that I could be president of the United States before I could be an astronaut because the military didn’t let women fly fighter jets and that’s where all the astronauts were recruited from. My dad was wrong on that subject too. But I still love, admire and respect him for being a Jackie Devereaux good father and doing the best he could with a family of six children. wonder now. EDITOR’S Opinion

my own way in life and reach my own conclusions about this and other serious social issues of my era. Today, gay rights protestors and those who oppose gay rights (the religious right) have gathered in cities across the nation including Palm Springs to express their views. Rainbow colored flags furl in the wind next to religious right banners and poster boards. “Why can’t we all just get along?” are infamous words from Rodney King, severely beaten by a group of Los Angeles Police Officers in 1991. His slogan echoes through my brain for just about all inequality and gay rights are no exception. Gay people are people too. They should have equal rights promised to all Americans under the U.S. Constitution. The words, “Equal rights for all” is chiseled into the very building where the Supreme Court justices are considering whether to grant Same Sex Marriage equal protection under

the law for all 50 states. Currently, nine states and the District of Columbia have granted Same Sex Marriage equal protection under the law. However, the remaining states want to make their own choices and not be dictated to by the federal government in social issues. I haven’t liked some of the fed’s decisions in the recent past, including the one ordering California to release 60,000 inmates to ease prison overcrowding to local jails. States don’t like to be ordered around. However, we do need to get better educated on how this whole thing started. On January 11, 2010, Judge Walker began trying Perry v Schwarzenegger. The case involved a federal-constitutional challenge to California Proposition 8, a voter initiative constitutional amendment that eliminated the right of same sex couples to marry in 2008, a right which had previously been granted after the California Supreme Court found a statute to the same effect unconstitutional under California law. Then less than eight months later, on August 4, 2010, Judge Walker ruled that Proposition 8 was unconstitutional “under both the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses” of the U.S. Constitution and prohibited its enforcement. That decision was affirmed by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on February 12, 2012. The losing parties have sought review which is currently underway by the U.S. Supreme Court. Okay, enough of the history lesson, now let’s get down to the nitty gritty decision of granting equal rights to gay Americans. How can we as a nation be so divided about this issue? Do folks in the religious right really believe gays are from the devil? Isn’t that thinking a little outdated? Don’t opponents to gay rights think that gays are people too? They’ve got to be kidding themselves. They’ve got to be hung up on some ancient biblical terminology that probably was misquoted to begin with. People are people. Human beings are all created equal under the eyes of God and I don’t think God would say no to gay rights because who knows, maybe God was a gay person. I know that one of my alltime favorite holy men of our era, Sai Baba of India, was accused of being gay and I thought, so what? Why can’t a holy man be gay?

Vacant Homes Bring Unwanted Neighbors By Riverside Sheriff’s Department Investigator Lance Comer According to RealtyTrac. com, 2012 saw a total of 2,304,941 foreclosure filings, default notices and bank repossessions. The overwhelming number of foreclosures and vacant homes has created a serious problem for real estate agents, the community and law enforcement. Former safe, family-friendly neighborhoods have become a magnet for squatters, gang members and identity thieves, who use these properties to further their criminal enterprise. Real estate agents, who have been contracted by the banks and absentee owners to sell these properties, often find them occupied by subjects who claim a “legitimate” right of occupancy.

Real estate agents, as well as law enforcement officers responding to a call of subjects squatting in a home are often shown a “deed” or a “rental agreement,” by the squatters who claim a legal right to be there. These calls are often erroneously handled as “civil” issues, leaving the real estate agents, banks and legal title holders to evict the squatters from the home. This process delays the sale of the home, costing the legal owners and real estate agents time and money. California law clearly indicates that squatting is a crime, not a civil issue. However, it is first important to understand what happens during the foreclosure process. Once a bank files an initial foreclosure notice, called a “Notice of Default,” the banks are required to wait a specified period prior to setting a date to foreclose and sell the property. This time period varies by state and can often be several months. In the meantime, the owners have walked away, sometimes months before a notice of default is even filed, leaving the property vacant. Criminals involved in foreclosed or abandoned property schemes usually have some knowledge of real estate and property law, and use this knowledge to scam real estate agents and confuse police officers not educated in these types of frauds. Two of the most common types of criminal activity related to foreclosed or abandoned properties are rent skimming and rent-free living. Rent skimming:California Penal Code § 602.9 defines rent skimming as a crime in which a suspect claims ownership or takes possession of a residential dwelling, without the legal owner’s consent, for the purposes of renting that dwelling to another person. In a typical rent skimming scenario, a suspect will locate a vacant home, break into the home and change the locks. The suspect may do minimal work to prepare the home and then place a “for rent” ad in the newspaper or an online site, such as Craigslist. The unsuspecting victim responding to the ad will give the suspect a cash payment as a security deposit and first month’s rent. The suspect pockets the cash and leaves the victim in the home. These victims are often later contacted by real estate agents and law enforcement and advised that they are actually trespassing in the home and are forced to leave. Rent-free living: Some squatters are not looking to make money, but rather, to simply live “rent free” until the legal owners or neighbors make enough complaints to have the squatters removed or arrested for trespassing. These types of squatters may use fake or forged rental documents to enable the trespassing, while others break into the home and live rent free until

The overwhelming number of foreclosures and vacant homes has created a serious problem for real estate agents

they are contacted by the police. Once removed by law enforcement, these opportunist squatters will move to the next vacant home and begin the scam again. Anyone suspecting that a

vacant home is being occupied by squatters should notify law enforcement. Aside from trespassing, many squatters are involved in more serious forms of crime and use the home as a base

of operations. Neighbors taking a proactive approach can help keep their community safe. Call local police or the Riverside County Sheriff ’s Department if you sense squatters in your neighborhood.

[Article 5: August 16, 1951] I started looking for work during a period of hard times such as California has had on several occasions. My problem was not only to make a living, but I must earn enough surplus to live seven months on the

Originally written for the Desert Sentinel

homestead without any known income and somehow build a cabin in which to live. I tramped many streets of Los Angeles, applied for work in all likely places, and visited the newspaper offices to read free copies of helpwanted sections. To save carfare I always walked. To stretch out money I ate 10- and 15-cent meals in Jap or Chinese restaurants in the slum section of the city. I slept in “flop rooms,” so called because in them 10 to 20 men just flopped on bedding. The usual charge was 15 cents. For 35 cents there was a cot and four men to a room. Even with these unpleasant economies, my money dwindled alarmingly. What jobs did turn up, I could not take because I must earn more than a bare living. To bolster my courage I kept the money in silver dollars and gripped them in one hand often. At last they got down to three and a few pennies. Then in the evening paper I read an advertisement for a man wanted at good salary. One who could do many things and with various qualifications, all of which I could fill. This man must be bookkeeper, grocer, butcher, experienced with horses and mules, able to run [a] Wells Fargo Express office, cook his own meals, and talk Spanish. Next morning when that office opened, I was there, walking on air because at last I had a break. The job was as good as mine. I had eaten 25 cents for supper, spent 35 cents for sleep, and eaten 25 cents for breakfast. Never mind that only one silver dollar and small change was left, this was a break. It was a large office with perhaps 30 clerks

and typists working at different desks. A small high counter barred my further entrance. One of these fat-jowled, well-fed, lazy clerks handed me an application for the job. It was of two pages with printed questions on all four sides. Finally it was finished, and the last question [was], “Are you married?” to which I answered, “Yes.” In high spirits I handed the completed questionnaire to the lazy clerk, noting well meanwhile with satisfaction, that no other men had yet appeared in answer to the advertisement. The clerk read slowly down one page after another, nodding his well-combed head at times as though satisfied with the answers, and I thought all was well. But he then tore the papers into bits and threw them in the waste basket, saying, “We do not hire married men.” I was stunned. Fighting mad and desperate because this was the only job in many days of search having possibilities, and my money was gone. Was this to be my final defeat? So in explosive desperation I pounded the counter with my fist and talked to the whole office in a loud voice that all might hear. I said, “This is a big company, it hires many men. There must be a place for a man like me who wants to work. I can do many things and do them well. I want to talk to some man who knows more about this business than this counter clerk. I want to see some man in authority. I want a job.” The 30-odd clerks all stopped work to stare at me. www.cabotsmuseum. org for tour information and hours

When Investing By Janice Gough Many mistakes made when investing can be avoided by using simple evaluations and common sense. When you hire an investment advisor, you do so because you do not have the time, tools or knowledge to do it yourself. You expect the counselor you select will help increase the value of your portfolio. This is not always the case. His fees and sales charges may be eating away the performance of your investments. If you use a fee-based advisor, you have signed an agreement for pay a percentage on the total of the portfolio being managed. The fees are normally within one to two percent of the assets under management. Sales charges are also incurred each time a trade is made. If your holdings have a lot of turnover, then you may be racking up many fees. Initially, your advisor will create an investment profile for you. During the interview, they will determine if you are a Conservative, Moderate, or Aggressive investor. The advisor will then enter your profile into their computer and create the list of investments that will be purchased with your money. The menu of products which they use will only include the ones with whom their Broker/Dealer has selling contracts with. Generally there will be a combination of Stocks, Mutual Funds, Bonds, REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts), Money Market funds, and (ETFs) Exchange Traded Funds. When you own many different investments, it may become overwhelming to track

the success of each. I use a simple graph to determine growth or loss for each asset owned. Each time you receive the brokerage statement, simply enter the closing value, comparing that with the last figure entered in the chart. Based on this information you can determine the percentage of gain or loss. The brokerage statement will generally show a gain or loss on the overall account, but to determine which ones are making you money, you must review each one to make effective decisions. The biggest mistake you can make is to not review the results consistently. When seeing consistent declines, then it is time to question your broker about the holding. We are in an extremely volatile market operating in a new environment of political, fiscal and economic uncertainty. Having clarity about each one of the investments in your portfolio is crucial. Warren Buffet has said, “Do not invest in anything that you do not understand.” Ask you advisor, “Why” he has selected each investment in his recommendation. Avoid paying fees on assets that do not require management, such as bonds. You may be asking yourself why you need to keep your own chart. This will help determine if your advisor is doing a good job for you. Owning numerous investments will not necessarily provide a greater or safer return. Understanding the investment, the performance and how it mirrors your investment profile will provide a greater safety net. For a complimentary Chart, email Janice@goughinsurance.com

Cyprus is a small island with a population of about one million, three-quarters whom are Greek Cypriot with the rest primarily of Turkish decent. It is east of Greece, south of Turkey and northwest of Israel and the Gaza Strip. It is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and most importantly they are a member of the European Union (EU). It is a popular tourist destination.

Investment Know-How Kevin Powell It is estimated that their GDP was about $24 billion in 2012 or a small fraction of (0.2 percent) of the entire euro zone. So why would there be so much concern about a country so small? The big concern is Cyprus’ banking sector. Cyprus has about $68 billion Euros on deposit for a country that has such a small population. This is a very unique situation. Cyprus is heavily connected to Greece and Greece is still facing the risk of default on its sovereign debt. Cyprus’ friendly banking laws have attracted money from around the world to its shore. Russians and Britons especially have a great deal of money in Cyprus banks. The only thing that was keeping those banks afloat was short term loans from the central bank of Cyprus with the blessing of the ECB. The banks must have this special funding because they do not have the collateral to receive normal loans. Banks have been closed for the past week and merchants are only accepting cash for transactions. They are only looking for about $13 billion in aid. In a frightening proposal last week, a flat tax was recommended on all depositors ranging from 10 percent for smaller deposits to 20 percent and more for some larger accounts ($100,000 Eros and above). Estimates are that the Cyprus central bank has already handed out close to $10 billion in aid to their banks. Early Monday morning a deal was announced that would provide some relief. The proposal was quickly approved by the euro zone finance ministers. The agreement would effectively set up a “good bank” and a “bad bank” system. All larger accounts would be frozen because those assets are not insured above $100,000 Euros. That money will be used to resolve the debt crisis. This could cause heavy losses to

wealthy investors who have used Cyprus banks to shelter the wealth in those accounts. The second largest bank in Cyprus will be closed as part of the deal. Officials expect to seize (tax, raid, etc.) approximately $4.2 billion from those large accounts that are uninsured to go towards the debt crisis. Account balances in excess of the insured amount of $100,000 were estimated to be close to $40 billion Euros. That works out to roughly a 10 percent tax on those larger accounts. So much money has already been spent on Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain in the form of bailouts that many fear even a small threat like the one Cyprus poses could risk another run in those fragile economies or push the EU deeper into recession. It’s very likely that once the banks reopen this week, there will be a run on accounts as depositors won’t want to risk leaving their money to be subjected to further taxes and seizure. It’s likely that Cyprus and other countries will not get the chance to do this again. It

would make absolutely no sense for anyone to keep more than the insured amount in any bank account. This will likely trigger more banking law reforms. The last minute agreement still does not mean that all is well for Cyprus or Greece that is still struggling with its own deals. Recent Italian elections overwhelmingly show that citizens there do not want any type of austerity for their country. There is a huge upcoming election in Germany for Prime Minister Merkel. The fact that Cyprus had considered seizing money from even insured accounts will likely have a lingering impact on the EU for some time. This plus the looming elections puts a lot of uncertainty in the European economies. If you own stocks, then these events are all things you should keep an eye on. Don’t forget the EU is the largest economy in the world and the largest trading partner of the US. Kevin Powell has been a financial advisor for the past 27 years and can be reached at kpplanner1@aol.com.

San Felipe Getaway By Jackie Devereaux

San Felipe, Mexico is just a short four hour drive from Palm Springs. My husband, Tom, and I travel there a lot because we love weekend getaways to a foreign country and the cheaper prices there. We take our dog to the veterinarian, (Dr. Antonio Solis), and sometimes get our car fixed by local mechanics saving hundreds of dollars, which is enough to pay for the trip. Our first stop was to check in at the Sandollar Hotel at mile maker 6.1 south of town on the main road going towards the airport. The Sandollar is owned and operated by John Trinkle, a former crop-duster from Central California who later took his money and became a developer. “This is my last project,” said Trinkle during our tour of his

comfortable accommodations. Generally, construction work can be on the shoddy side in Mexico, but not so with the Sandollar. Trinkle has elegant crown molding, hand-painted sinks and tile work in both the bathroom and kitchen areas giving each room some grandeur and elegance for a reasonable price. He also added one- and two-man kayaks, a paddle boat, bicycles, fishing gear and just about anything you need for an enjoyable San Felipe trip right there on site, included

beautiful ocean front property that includes a swimming pool, jacuzzi on the roof, wading pool seaside with four outside barbecues and a waterfall. There is also children’s playground equipment, a large sandbox, outdoor billiards and ping pong tables and exercise equipment to keep you amused on site. Trinkle designed and built everything using local contractors and laborers with a keen eye for

in the price of the room. And perhaps most important, he is dog-friendly, so you can bring your pooch on your getaway. Our next stop after checking in was to head to the El Nido Steak and Seafood restaurant located on Mar de Cortez near the Malecon, which is the ocean front boulevard running through downtown San Felipe. We both ordered a Rib Eye Steak medium well, served with a loaded baked

potato and house salad. We paid $480 pesos (about $40 USD at an exchange rate of 12 pesos per dollar). The steaks were huge and I took half mine home. That meal would have cost twice that price in the states. We spent the rest of the evening back in the room resting and watching Mexican television in our comfortable suite. The next day we cruised the Malecon, ordered two kilos of fresh shrimp ($15 a kilo) and Corvina Seabass ($6 a kilo) from Andy the Fish Salesmen for pick up the next day. We had breakfast at the newly-opened Sierra Restaurant located right on Malecon. Our waiter, Alfredo, gave us first class treatment at San Felipe prices. I ordered Machaca with Eggs ($6) and my husband ordered a Shrimp Omelet ($6) both served with hash brown, refried beans and a lazy Susan filled with assorted salsas. We were in Mexican cuisine heaven. We cruised town visiting our old friends including Linda Wilson at Club de Pesca and Michael Jordan at Baja Ink, the best tattoo parlor in town. Afterwards, we had lunch at the Taco Factory where we had to split their delicious Steamed Clams ($4), Crazy Peppers ($5) and Fish Burger with french fries ($5). I highly recommend visiting San Felipe and visiting a few of our favorite spots for a weekend getaway. It’s an easy drive, affordable and the locals are really nice people. Remember, San Felipe is dog-friendly, so pack up the pooch too.

and a bit sexy, Sin city Comedy combines comedians and burlesque acts in a new comedy show that will be offered on the Celebrity Reflection and the Celebrity Silhouette, and rotate to the Celebrity Solstice in May. Celebrity’s Sin City Comedy shows are presented at varying late-night time slots and, because of their adult content, they are open exclusively to guests age 18 years of age and older. I wonder if there is any insurance available covering the quality of the show.

Bill’s Insurance Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon Until recently, many cruise ship passengers considered trip insurance much like they considered buying extended warranties on electronic purchases…an unnecessary expense. But, with the news recently of three major trip disruptions aboard Carnival Cruises’ ships, travelers are beginning to have heightened concerns about the potential safety and financial outcomes of their trips. More cruise passengers have begun to consider travel insurance as an essential part of the cost of their cruise vacation; and here’s one good reason why. Although Carnival Cruises has, in the case of their recent misfortunes, made the decision to provide financial compensation to their passengers, cruise lines are not legally obligated to compensate passengers in any way for any kind of mishap happening to, or aboard, the ship. If Carnival had not provided compensation and additional assistance to passengers aboard the Triumph, Dream and Legend, those affected would have faced possibly severe financial losses and major headaches in trying to arrange for alternate transportation home from their botched vacations. Additionally, there could have been lost deposits on accommodations and activities connected to the cruise or, in the worst-case scenario, expenses for emergency medical treatment if anyone happened to fall ill or become injured aboard ship. Travel insurance provides benefits to help with each of these scenarios, as well as many other unexpected circumstances that can arise during a cruise; at least it deserves your consideration before you cast-off.

Celebrity Cruises Sin City On a lighter note, Celebrity Cruises, (one of Carnival Cruises’ sister companies), which believes that ship-board entertainment doesn’t need to end at bedtime and neither do passenger’s bar tabs – has launched “Sin City Comedy.” Designed to be funny

The belief that “Build it and they will come,” is still alive and well in Las Vegas. Luxury hotel brand, Gansevoort Hotel Group and nightclub impresario Victor Drai, in collaboration with Cesar’s Entertainment Corporation, have announced that Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon located in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip on the prime corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road will be renovated and, about $185 million later, replaced by the Gansevoort Las Vegas, billed as an intimate urban resort in the heart of the Strip. This would not be news but for the fact that the Gansevoort

Las Vegas will be the only standalone boutique resort on the Strip, featuring 188 Parisian apartmentstyle guest rooms including 19 suites and a ‘destination restaurant.’ The Gansevoort Las Vegas will also feature the creation of Drai’s Beach Club and Nightclub, with a 65,000 square feet indoor/ outdoor nightclub and rooftop pool and viewing experience. In addition to overseeing the beach-club-cum- nightclub, Las Vegas club icon Victor Drai, whose “Drai’s After Hours” earned him the title of “Father of the Las Vegas after-hour’s scene,” will bring back his legendary after-hour’s club, with it’s discrete and intimate underground style. Over the past 15 years, this is where insiders really went to find out if ‘what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.’ Start saving your money; present plans are for the Gansevoort Las Vegas to open early in 2014.

THE MAVERICKS

PALM DESERT – Fusing traditional country with traditional rock ‘n roll, The Mavericks became one of the most critically acclaimed and successful groups of the early ‘90s. They bring their special blend to the McCallum Theatre on Wednesday, Mar. 27 at 8 p.m. Led by singer/songwriter Raul Malo, the band was formed in Florida in the late ‘80s. Raul had played in several bands while in high school, as did bassist Robert Reynolds. The pair discovered they both enjoyed the music of Roy Orbison, Patsy Cline, Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, and Johnny Cash and decided to form a band. Robert persuaded his friend, Paul Deakin, a drummer in progressive rock bands, to join the fledgling country band. By the late 1980s, they had added guitarist Ben Peeler. Performing as The Mavericks, they began playing rock clubs around Miami and built a solid local following. With their latest album, In Time, the band that defied definitions and made everybody feel good is back. The Mavericks have captured the infectious energy and robust sound with In Time and have proven once again that they make genre-defying soul music. Getting back to being what they are underscores everything about The Mavericks’ return to form – the ferocity of their playing, the singularity of their intent, and yes, the copious sense of exuberance that infuses every note of the album. For all the polish and sophistication, sold out shows at London’s Royal Albert Hall, cultural blurring and tours of South America, Europe, the United States and Canada, The Mavericks remain a post-punk band from Miami’s indie scene. “The fans have always understood us,” says Raul. “We made them feel good – and that was something then, as now I think, people wanted. Life is so serious; even for a moment, let’s forget and enjoy!” The Mavericks on Wednesday, Mar. 27 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $55, $35, $30 and $25 mccallumtheatre. com, or call (760) 340-2787. living longer

March 27, 2013

Facts And Fears About Growing Older Thursday, Mar. 28 is the date of my 85th birthday. Since all of the readers of the Weekly Desert Star are themselves getting older every day, I would like to share my experience of being this old and what I am doing to stay alive and become younger. Frankly, being 85 is a bit scary! Although I have a lot of energy and wake up every morning with big plans and hopes, the possibility that this may be the last day of my life is always on my mind. However, I have been involved since

2006 in an unusual experiment that may permit me to live for hundreds of years or more. The extremely rapid growth of my hair and fingernails is proof of the growth of life energy in my body. I have great hopes that my success will also enable me to help other people live much longer than now possible and create a world filled with more mature, wise, fully human people than at present. However, at this time, I must admit that I cannot be absolutely sure that I have actually reversed the aging process.

Mr. Life Extension Art Kunkin

The fact is that even though medical doctors have told me the encouraging news that my body seems to be some 30 years younger than my actual age – a reality due to my anti-aging experiment - I also feel and experience that I am deteriorating around the edges. As a result I am seeing various medical specialists at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital to fix these hopefully peripheral problems. For example, I don’t hear as well as I used to. Too often I have to ask that words be repeated. A hearing aid helps but the one I have been given produces an electronic undertone that is not comfortable. Then my knees hurt because x-rays show that the cartilage between the bones has worn out. Too much soccer when I was younger. However, I have an appointment with an orthopedic specialist at the VA Hospital in Loma Linda in July. I’m told that it’s possible to correct this condition with a knee replacement. I also am not seeing as well as I used to see. A local optometrist said this is due to the fact that I have a slight darkening of the eye lens due to cataracts. I have another appointment in July at the VA with an opthamologist to consider a cataract operation. I’m told by people who have had this operation that it’s a fairly simple laser surgery that doesn’t require hospitalization and brings the eyes back to normal in a matter of days. Occasionally I experience severe fatigue due, I believe, to a low thyroid condition that naturally develops with aging. Here I have a problem because the VA doctors are not willing to do the advanced tests advocated by several thyroid specialists I have consulted that would show a proper conversion of thyroid hormone T4 into the T3 that would cure my fatigue. I am hoping that the VA doctors will read this article, do these tests and treat this condition. The deterioration I am experiencing is only around the “edges” and seems to be correctable. Therefore, despite the uncertainties involved, I am mostly optimistic about my anti-aging experiment. In the limited space of this column I can only summarize the reasons for my overall optimism.

For a fuller explanation, please refer to the new website, www. LifeExtensionSchool.com. I am establishing this website now that I am seven years into my current experiment and can report some success. I can report that I have outlived my parents, my two brothers as well as many close friends of my generation. My experimentation with anti-aging actually started 33 years ago in 1980. In February of that year, I went to Salt Lake City, Utah for a two week introduction to laboratory alchemy. Although alchemy is generally considered to be a medieval pseudo-science concerned with transmuting lead into gold, I learned that alchemy is really concerned with achieving great longevity. I had such a profound experience at this initial 1980 workshop that I moved to Salt Lake to continue my alchemical studies and lived there for four years. I became the editor of an international alchemy magazine and accumulated 1,000 manuscripts and books

on laboratory alchemy and the possibility of extreme longevity. For 30 years, I and others, conducted hundreds of experiments that failed because the old books failed to specify the correct starting mineral. In 2006, however, I concluded that the thousand-year secret of alchemy involved using a radioactive mineral. I then used that mineral to make the medicine that I have been ingesting weekly for the last seven years with positive results. My 85th birthday party will take place during the Aries month ending Apr. 20, 2013. For details and to receive Life Extension information, contact me at the email address below or at my websites or by calling760-369-8921. Modernism Week Announce Change PALM SPRINGS – Officials of Palm Springs Modernism Week, a non-profit organization that produces the annual festival, are announcing some changes to the structure of the organization for 2014. Board members have appointed local business owners Chris Mobley and Larry Abel to the positions of Chairman and Vice Chairman, respectively. In addition, Nickie McLaughlin has stepped down as Executive Director, and the organization is now seeking to make that role a full time position. “As Executive Director of Palm Springs Modernism Week for several years, Nickie McLaughlin helped the organization grow from a few events attended by local architecture buffs, to a world renowned celebration of midcentury modern architecture and design,” says Mobley. “McLaughlin oversaw the development and execution of more than 100 tours, films, lectures, and parties during this year’s event. Her contribution to the growth of Modernism Week has been significant, and the Board of Directors wishes her continued success in her future endeavors.” The Board has responded to the phenomenal growth of the organization by expanding its leadership structure to accommodate those who have made significant contributions to that growth over the last several years. Part of that expansion includes the creation of a Modernism Week Advisory Board, to be headed by former Modernism Week Board Chairman Jacques Caussin, who will assume the role of President Emeritus. “It gives me incredible joy to see that our event has been embraced so enthusiastically by the public, and we have shown our community that there is value in so-called ‘old,’ well-designed buildings,” says Caussin, a Modernism Week founder. “I am thrilled to pass the baton to our formidable team, and I know they will take this signature event to the next level of success and recognition.” This year’s event, which took place from Feb. 14-24 surpassed previous attendance levels, with more than 40,000 people descending on the Coachella Valley during that 11-day period. More than 86 percent of those attendees were visitors from outside the Coachella Valley,

packing area restaurants and stores, with many of those establishments reporting record sales during this time period. In terms of media exposure, the event garnered more than 180 unique print, broadcast, and online impressions, with 318 million total impressions, creating an estimated value of $2 million in coverage. Palm Springs Modernism Week also awards annual scholarships to high school students who have chosen career paths in architecture and design. This year, the Modernism Week Committee awarded seven renewable scholarships, each at $1,500, for a total of $10,500 in scholarship monies. Five of those scholarships went to Palm Springs High School students continuing in a design field in higher education, and two scholarships were awarded to College of the Desert students continuing their studies in a design field at an accredited college. The 9th Annual Palm Springs Modernism Week will take place from February 13-23, 2014, and organizers are promising some enhancements, including a new and improved web site. “We realize that some of those who attended this year’s event had experienced problems with our current website,” says Mobley. “Rest assured, the new site will launch this summer and will be much more user friendly, creating a better experience for ticket buyers next year.” For more information , visit www.modernismweek.com or “like” them on Facebook. For inquiries regarding the Executive Director position, please contact Chris Mobley at 310/467-5764 or chris@justmoderndecor.com Palm Springs Modernism Week is a celebration of mid-century modern design, architecture and culture, and features more than 100 events including home tours, films, lectures, fashion, and swank receptions at locations rarely-seen by the public. As the only such event in the country when it was launched in 2006, Palm Springs Modernism Week has helped fuel a robust national interest in the preservation and appreciation of modernism. Palm Springs Modernism Week supports local and state preservation organizations in their efforts to preserve modernist architecture throughout the state of California.

Bright Future for Stem Cell Therapy

While stem cell therapy for human application remains tied up with red tape by the FDA – your pooch is free to experience this modern day medical miracle. Employing stem cells to repair or replace damaged organs or tissues has birthed an exciting new branch of medicine known as regenerative medicine. This field also holds the great promise of regenerating failing organs using the patient’s own stem cells, thus eliminating the problem of finding suitable donors and organ transplant rejection. It’s not exactly new science, since the first major breakthrough came in 2006 when scientists discovered how to “reprogram” an adult cell to behave like an embryonic stem cell. Prior to this, stem cell research had been constrained by critics debating ethical and legal

issues surrounding the use of human embryos. During that debate, I bemoaned the critics who remained firmly against the use of discarded umbilical cords of newborns (also considered to be embryonic tissue) stifling this promising frontier of medical research in the U.S. Fortunately, maverick scientists from around the globe pushed this door of opportunity wide open. Advances in cell technology brought forth induced pluripotent cells (iPS). Like turning back the hands on a clock, mature adult cells could be returned to a primitive state of function – that of a developing embryo when cells are differentiating into specific tissue types. Pluripotent is a funny word that essentially means “able to do many things.” A fitting description for these mighty stem cells that are harvested from various tissues like skin, bone marrow, fat, and blood – then programed to heal other parts of the body. For the last five years, fatderived stem cell transplants – pioneered by a San Diego-based company called Vet-Stem (VetStem.com) – has revolutionized the treatment of arthritis as well as tendon and ligament injuries in horses and dogs. The transplant begins by removing several grams of fat from the dog’s shoulder or abdomen area which is shipped

to Vet-Stem. Their lab isolates the regenerative stem cells to be transplanted where needed. The most common canine application has been to repair diseased hip and other joints – improving mobility and reducing pain in older dogs. The average cost of a stem cell transplant is around $3,000. Some pet insurance companies, like my favorite Pet Plan, will reimburse for this therapy. Also, you will need to locate a trained and certified veterinarian that can perform the procedure. In addition to offering a valid alternative to invasive surgery or the need for pain killers, other benefits include quick action and unlimited potential. The rebuilding of tissues occurs within thirty to sixty days. Though currently approved to treat osteoarthritis and other jointrelated issues, the application of stem cell therapy to treat liver and kidney disease as well as other degenerative conditions holds real promise. Regenerative medicine is

paving the road with new hope to restore health – a vast improvement over what pharmaceuticals can accomplish. It’s already happening in countries like Costa Rica, where progressive free-thinking doctors are not deterred by overzealous regulation that keeps informed patients from getting the care they want and sometimes desperately need. People with crippling arthritis, spinal cord injuries, and multiple sclerosis that failed to improve with the standard of care in the U.S. can opt for this treatment at the Stem Cell Institute: CellMedicine.com Paula Terifaj DVM is owner of the DogSpa Resort & Wellness Center in Desert Hot Springs. It took me one whole year to catch Rudy, a gentle, sweet pit bull terrier. That’s how long it took to gain his trust. When he first showed up, he was terrified of every thing that moved, including me. He had an injured back leg. Because of his injury, he was at a huge disadvantage when competing for food. He ate last behind the wild dogs, coyotes, and even the ravens. He only got what was left over, which was usually nothing. This is why I kept taking food out especially for him, but even the sight of me would scare him off. His struggle for life was a big one, and he was out there alone. I was in the habit of looking for him everyday. If it was cold or windy or raining, I wondered where he was hunkered down. I was the most concerned for him in the extreme heat. He discovered a wet spot in the shade from one of my sprinkler heads and started digging a hole and crawling in there every day. I hooked up a drip line that would fill a pan next to his hole, so he would have something to drink while he was laying there. I started putting his own bowl of food by his hole. When ever I looked out to this hole, there he would be. A big event changed his life when I was able to rescue two other pit

bulls who had been dominating the wild area. He must have felt safer, because he started coming up to the fence to interact with my other dogs. I immediately put up a bed, food, and water by the fence, and he stayed there for the next two weeks. I wanted to put him in Lucy’s fenced yard, because she was living there by herself. I started gathering his poop and putting it in Lucy’s yard, so she would get used to his smell. I put Lucy in the guest house, opened the gates, and let Rudy come in and

check out the lay of the land, so he would not be at a disadvantage in a new territory. After one year and two weeks, Rudy was finally introduced to Lucy inside the fence. No more being alone for either one of them, they have been best friends ever since, and my Mom finally got her “lap dog!” Saving one dog’s life won’t change the world, but it does change the world for that one dog! Bhakti Fest

Bhakti Fest Announces 2013 Festivals Bhakti Fest, the originator of yoga and kirtan festivals in the now wildly popular yoga festival scene is pleased to announce their 2013 festivals. Bhakti Ventures will produce three festivals this year, the fifth anniversary of Bhakti Fest West in Joshua Tree taking place Sept. 5 – 8, the third annual Shakti Fest also in Joshua Tree May 17 – 19. Bhakti Fest debuts their season in May with Shakti Fest at the incredible Joshua Tree Desert Retreat Center with a three day event that celebrates divine feminine power. Taking place a week after Mother’s Day.

Many this week are preparing for Easter Sunday (or the Easter bunny). Easter celebrates the Spirit of Resurrection – a fire resurrecting all life everywhere on Earth. On Thursday the Sun, Venus and Uranus conjunct (join) in Aries (initiating all things new). The Sun illuminates, Venus carries the Ray of the Aquarian Age, and Uranus rules the Aquarian Age. There is an illumination of things to come, things bright, revolutionary and startling. These new energies falling to earth reveal to us that a new culture and civilization is immanent - the Culture of the New Era Community. The new energies no longer support that which does not build the new world era. Spirit (the Will of God) anchors into matter; the Willto-Good manifests; and a “new phase of the Plan” is initiated. There’s immediacy, a fusion, the Light quickens, opposites fuse and a bond is created for some greater goal. It is the goal of building the world anew. During this Easter week Uranus in Aries, combined with Venus and the Sun, birth into the collective new archetypical ideas from the Mind of God – fiery “pulses of life” emerging into our world, anchoring as seeds, resurrecting as a “new order in the world” We are thus called to develop balance and Right Relations. The established social order is rebelled against. The personal becomes transpersonal. During this time it is also Passover. Easter Sunday has (appropriately) a Pluto (death, resurrection) flavor. The moon’s in Sag. There will be heights and depths of feelings. Let there also be sweetness. In our Easter baskets. ARIES: It’s time for so many things. Celebrations, a birthday, creating your new appearance, a better way of communicating, beautifying your outer environments, harmonizing your inner environment. And calling forth a greater sense of balance in all parts of your life. You can do this simply by having the awareness and intention. It’s a new year for you. Make it novel, innovative and original. TAURUS: Your life seems secluded and hidden. Even though you’re out and about in the world at times, you really live behind the veils of an ashramic or monastic reality where you help those in need. Only a very few who know you well know this about your life - how you serve and help others. You teach others to be sympathetic, understanding and compassionate. You look within for spiritual guidance. GEMINI: People notice that you express greater kindness and consideration to everyone

in your group. You realize it’s important to invoke Right Human Relations with friends. It’s a good time to organize and lead a group. Because you inspire others. Should there be difficulties between you and another, talk things through with the guidance of your Soul. That is our spiritual mediator. You are to be the harmony in all relationships. CANCER: You will experience harmony with those outside your family. They may actually ask to visit you to talk and rest and sit a while. There will be harmony also with those you work with, meeting people at the very moment

on the very right day. Your timing is aligned with the world clock, the heaven’s natural timing. Follow all guidelines for gardening by the stars, planets and moon. Grow kale, collards, cilantro, parsley and beets. LEO: You need to be far away from home. You almost need a to flee, to run away, to break away and for this you need a triptych, an escape route. Perhaps you need to walk a long distance and find those “two roads diverged in a yellow wood…to where it bent in the undergrowth… grassy and wanting wear.” Which road would you take. It makes all the difference. You need an adventurous romance. VIRGO: There are several areas that need your deep thought. One is relationship and the other is money. Often they go together. The greater question is what is your relationship to money and finances? Ponder upon this carefully. It’s time now for greater trust within relationships and greater security financially. Be sure to create harmony with those you hold money in common. Consider giving gifts unexpectedly to those you love. LIBRA: It is good to think about kindness. Especially with your partner, close intimates and work associates. Kindness deepens harmony and creates balance. When discussing any imbalances, kindness allows you to accomplish with ease what may be difficult. Kindness creates a mindful heart. The Dalai Lama said, “Be kind whenever possible. It is always

possible.” And it always returns. SCORPIO: You will take special interest in your appearance (clothing, shoes, hair, health) and all daily personal habits to make yourself more beautiful, healthy and attractive. People will notice the difference. You discover something special about yourself not known before. That you want to beautify, care for and heal humanity, too, and all the kingdoms. You must also care for those you work and live with. They love you. You are the steward. SAGITTARIUS: All Sag’s will want to go home again. Major planets are in your fourth house which is home, mother, nurturing, and all you were taught as a child. You need the love of your parents, especially your mother. If you can’t go home, then make your home a home and refuge for others. Have intimate chats with the women and men in your life. Beautify your home a bit more. And then call home. CAPRICORN: You’re deeply considerate, caring and thoughtful toward those you love, especially family and parents. Sometimes you need mother. Something is occurring with your home situation making your home a sangha, place of refuge and beauty. Gardening is also a source of beauty and a refuge. There’s a need for more love to be shown in relationships, one in particular. They must be able to trust you. AQUARIUS: Do you have brothers and/or sisters (siblings)? It’s good to contact and make things right with them. Write or phone and talk with them. Communicate ideas, thoughts and feelings. If siblings are not available then be with those who feel like family, reaching out to them, discovering what you have in common. You need intelligent friends. Have tact and diplomacy when interacting. Short trips will ease your need for change. PISCES: Your relationship with resources, money and finances will be a major focus for a while. This is good. You will either purchase lots of things (herbs, medicine, seeds), buy for others, or feel a lack of resources and be tested concerning your money. Using money for others is returned ten-fold. Do not purchase what’s unneeded. Art is most important at this time. Is there an artist you like? Obtaining a piece of art for beauty and investment would be favorable now. Art and beauty are part of the “popsicle index.” Risa is Founder & Director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies & Research Institute, a contemporary Wisdom School in the Ancient Mysteries tradition Email: risagoodwill@gmail.com. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-730-2727 for information regarding the trustee’s sale, or visit this Internet Web site www.
