Payless Shoes Helps Local Kids DESERT HOT SPRINGS - There are basic needs that all children must have – food, shelter, clothing and shoes, and many local parents today struggle to provide those basic needs. Payless Shoes has stepped up to the plate to help meet one of those needs through their “Payless 4 Kids” program. Recently, 80 Desert Hot Springs children benefitted from

DESERT HOT SPRINGS – Recently, seven military cadets from Desert Hot Springs High School have enlisted in the Marine Corps and an additional three cadets have signed enlistment papers to enter the Army. “In my nearly 10 years as the Senior Marine Instructor, I would have to state that this year’s color guard and drill teams from Desert Hot Springs are the sharpest and have done the best during drill competitions, which is a testament to Master Sergeant Benoit’s skill as

the Payless program and the smiles on their faces were priceless. Payless Shoes provided 80 pairs of shoes to children who were unable to play outside because their shoes were either too small or they had no shoes at all. It’s a basic need that has been met through the generous contributions from the community to the Payless 4 Kids program. If you’d like to donate to this program, go to ww.paylessgives.com.

CV Sales Tax Revenues Up

DESERT HOT SPRINGS – According to a Riverside County report, local businesses sold $2,567,000 more taxable retail goods during the third Quarter (July, August September) of 2012 than in 2011. These summer months are generally the lowest volumes for the city, which is a good sign for the upcoming year, said DHS City Manager Rick Daniels. “Increases were seen in all retail sectors, building and construction materials. This is the first quarter in the last five that Desert Hot Springs has not led the Coachella Valley in retail sales growth. Dollar General will add modestly to these numbers. “During the last 13 quarters since June of 2009 to this quarter, taxable sales are up 71.9 percent for the city. That figure leads the Coachella Valley and Riverside

County communities. “Along with my earlier report on unemployment improving, this report continues to indicate that the local economy is showing signs of the beginnings of the recovery. Improvement is a strategy that requires constant effort and hard work by all to improve the business climate in the City and region. 6.6% State of California 6.7% Southern California Counties 13.6% Riverside County

Congressman Ruiz Destined for Greatness Newly-elected Congressman Raul Ruiz said recently he has visited the City of Desert Hot Springs more than any other city in the 36th congressional district during a DHS Chamber of Commerce Meet & Greet luncheon held on Wednesday, Jan. 30 at the Miracle Springs Resort & Spa. More than 120 businessmen and civic leaders packed the Grand Ballroom and paid $30-$40 each to meet, have their photo taken and hear his remarks. Congressman Ruiz’s topic was the “deep need to remedy the huge disparity in jobs, education and health care in the district,” adding that a success story is developing across the Valley and DHS is a big part of it. While the new congressman was happy about winning the tight race against 16-year incumbent Mary Bono Mack, Ruiz admitted the first few weeks in office have been a whirlwind. He talked about the logistics of casting his first vote, of getting his plastic ID card and explained why he waited to put on the ever-important pin, which allows entrance into Congress.

bulging with hunger. My mother gave him my mango,” Ruiz said. “I learned from my mother that you always help someone else. “Those values we have must be reaffirmed. We must see ourselves as one community, as one family of the same fabric – young/elderly, gay/straight, east/west, rich/poor – we are all one community. “We desert dwellers live in a harsh environment, and yet we thrive. We are all part of the American Dream, the collective dream, and these three fundamental pillars must raise high to make that dream come true.” Those three pillars are jobs, education and health care. “We must lessen the disparities by promoting wealth and lift those at the bottom up. We must position our communities with a competitive advantage because we have an enormous abundance of wind, solar and geothermal power (in the Coachella Valley) and can be the leaders in green, renewable energies.” Ruiz had a great opportunity at Eisenhower Medical Center to conduct clinical research with HIV

Photo by Bruce Montgomery patients and work with the Desert Aids Project “to have building blocks and bring people together at the table for our collective dream.” “In education, we lag behind in the state. It is unacceptable that we have a 50 to 60 percent high school dropout rate; that our schools have cracks in their walls; that our students have no books, and are lagging behind in test scores. We need more computers and access to the Internet. We need to compete locally, nationally and internationally so that our children are the next CEOs, Board of Directors and Leaders in this world. We must raise our expectations for the youth and for each other in industry,” he said. “In health care, we must make sure we have a healthy community and productive population. We must live a healthy life and have

access to health education to make wise decisions.” The new Boy & Girls Club, the Health & Wellness Center provides medical and dental services to a region previously underserviced with one doctor for every 9,000 residents. “It’s been a game changer. No longer will Desert Hot Springs be medically underserved. It’s a blueprint for a plan to build the American Dream. It’s the glue, the desire and momentum fueled by two values: excellence with personal responsibility, and service to the community, self and country,” he said to a standing ovation. It was an inspirational speech and in my opinion, Congressman Ruiz is destined for higher office. I foresee him in the Senate and later becoming the first Latino to run for President of the United States.

“The communities in my district really benefit from this program, as youth work hard to clean up illegal dumping sites,” said Supervisor Benoit. “In return, the C.L.E.A.N. Youth Force program provides an opportunity for youth to financially support their clubs and organizations.” Organizations and clubs must be located within the Fourth District, commit the funds to meet the needs of local youth in the community and submit proof of their 501(c)(3) status with the IRS. Dear Editor, The article on the Sentinel Energy Plant seemed to get lost in the paper. It should have been put on the editorial page instead of being front page news. It is a glaring promotion piece for this toxic polluting facility. Also, there are huge inaccuracies of omission such as no mention of the deadly smokestack emissions of 2.5 micron particulates into our air, the very fine particles which can penetrate the skin and involve body organs. And, I didn’t see any information on Desert Hot Springs’ pristine drinking water being misused to cool the plant when Colorado River water could have been used. Now our award-winning water will be compromised. Not only will this plant take our water and contaminate our air, but, according to the plant’s manager, the power in excess of what our claimed needs will be here will be used by Edison outside the Coachella Valley. The downsides of this plant are way too great for us to cope with here. - Darel Propst, Desert Hot Springs resident

D E T Home Loans C I V E Y L G N O WR & Interest FROM ELVIS’ ESTATE Rates Regular readers of this column know that I intermingle my articles with first-hand accounts of personal life experiences and my topic of the week. You also know if you follow my writings that my mindset in life is a GHF (glass half full) journey regardless of the circumstance. This week’s story is very personal. When the last word is written, I hope you find it informative and something you want to forward to a friend or family member who might be going through a similar situation. I was evicted on Jan. 17, 2013, from Elvis Presley’s former home on Chino Canyon in Palm Springs. That makes me unique. I’m the only person out of seven billion people on the planet living today who has ever been evicted from the Kings castle. Not exactly the claim to fame I was looking for, but a unique claim none the less. When given lemons make lemonade, right? These past two weeks I’ve been writing about wrongful foreclosures, also known as “fraudclosures.” There has been an avalanche of wrongful and illegal foreclosures in all 50 states since 2008. If losing your home to a fraudclosure isn’t bad enough, insult is added to the injury when you are wrongfully evicted from your property. Evictions are a traumatic and tremendously negative emotional experience for almost everyone in a household. Psychologists have said moving out of one’s home is the second most stressful event in

life next to a funeral. One neighbor of mine who watched the calamity of my eviction unfold said he would rather go to a funeral than to go through the nightmare of an eviction like I experienced. Moving is never convenient, and moving as a result of an eviction even less so. In my case, I was informed by a commissioner at 9 a.m. on Jan. 15, that I had 53 hours to move out of a 5,500 square foot historic home by 2 p.m. on Jan. 17, (commissioners are not judges. In

to file a proper emergency court action (called an Exparte Motion) to reverse the commissioner’s decision. My attorney was actually more upset than me at the thought of my having to vacate Elvis’ desert compound where my family and I have lived and operated “Graceland West” for the past nine years. Since my wrongful fraudclosure (verified by court documents) in May of 2010, three different judges halted my eviction on three separate occasions and prevented the lender from taking possession of my property that once was Elvis’ former hilltop mansion. The judges reasoning was (quite correctly) that if the foreclosure should rightfully never have occurred in the first place, then logic dictates there can be no possibility of a legitimate eviction. However, I had a commissioner rule on this particular day and not a judge. Unjust evictions have become so prevalent that the city of Merced, California halted all evictions after foreclosure for a time in 2012. Evictions can be catastrophic for those who find the stigma of being “kicked out” of their home just too much to bear. Evictions can be traced as the root cause of divorce and falling school grades for children. The trauma of having to give up the beloved family pets after eviction because many apartment owners have a “no pet” policy can be devastating for both the animals and their owners. Next week, I’ll share with you the details of my eviction. Let me leave you with this last thought. If you are going through some parallel experience at the moment, do what I’m doing – don’t be bitter, be better. Make it your goal to be an overcomer. Don’t fall into a victim mentality. Palm Springs SocietySTAR Art Museum Women Who Rule Gala Stories and Photo by Pat Krause

In a city known for the glamour of its lavish black-tie soirées, no event sets the bar higher for elegance, sophistication and world class entertainment than the Palm Springs Art Museum’s annual major fundraising gala; just ask any of the approximately 400 guests who paid $750 per person - and up - to attend this year’s sold out event. The evening’s activities were divided into four components. Arriving guests were greeted atop the museum’s grand entrance stairway, enhanced for the occasion by multi-hued carpeting that set the event’s Pucci-design theme - by gala co-chairs, Georgia and Jerry Fogelson along with Roberta Holland, President of the Museum Associates Council. First stop for guests: the Houston Atrium, where a lavish cocktail reception was held. It was here that the glamorously-attired art patrons mixed and mingled, barely noticing the troupe of entirely-clad-in-gray mimes that roamed through the space, seemingly oblivious to the crowd around them. The museum’s Annenberg Theater was the evening’s second stop. Here guests were regaled with a masterful performance by a quartet called Under the Streetlamp. The name has its origin from the mid-1900s, when groups of guys (primarily) would huddle on street corners in New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia – under the streetlamp – and try out their acappella harmonizing of rock ‘n’ roll, doo-wop and Motown hit songs. Under the Streetlamp (Michael Cunio, Shonn Wiley, Michael Ingersoll and Christopher Kale Jones) pay homage to that time more than half-century ago with their flawless voices reprising

Singing along with Under the Streetlamp and its sevenpiece band builds up an appetite, so after the group’s performance, guests returned to the museum’s main level for a sit-down dinner in the main-floor Annenberg Wing, now transformed in to an elegant supperclub featuring Pucci-inspired

custom-designed table centerpieces and overhead mobiles. During dinner, violinist Brittany Cottover performed a medley of contemporary hits, making her way among the dinners while the Houston Atrium was made ready for the New Sensation Band who provided music to dance the rest of the night away. Want to be part of the fun? The museum’s annual gala may be over until next year, but the exciting fundraisers presented by the museum’s various auxiliary councils are sure to make for a series of upcoming, fun-filled programs. On Feb. 21, the museum’s Architecture and Design Council will present a “Mad Men” themed party at the museum’s soon-to-berenovated Architecture and Design Center in Palm Springs. An Art of Shopping fundraiser featuring fashions, jewelry and lunch at Cuistot, one of Palm Desert’s premier restaurants, will be held on Feb. 25. The Western Art Council always provides unique and impressive fundraisers. On Mar. 2, the Council will present a dinner at the home of Jim Houston, featuring Robert Redford and honoring artist Dan Namingha. On Mar. 23, the Photography Collection Council will model its annual fundraiser, to be held at a private residence in Palm Springs, after the famous 1966 Truman Capote “Black and White Ball.” If paying taxes will deplete the amount of your disposal income, then the “99 Bucks Art Sale,” to be held on Apr. 13 at the Hotel Zoso in Palm Springs, will be just the thing to suit your budget. Discount Cruises and Travel Tips

With New Year festivities now but a distant memory, the “wave season” has begun. That’s the time, in the dead of winter and early spring, that cruise lines offer their best promotions and incentives to encourage cruisers to book their

2013 travel early. To help insure that your next cruise will be memorable, in a positive way, here are some travel tips to avoid cruise distress and with some slight modification, they can be applied to other forms of travel as well. Plan for adequate time between your flight and your cruise. If you have to travel before boarding your cruise ship, be sure to allow for adequate time between your arriving flight and your ship’s departure, perhaps even planning to arrive a night or two in advance.

This will also aid in fighting off the effects of ‘jet lag.’ And, check the weather, not only at home, but also in the area where you will be cruising to insure that weather does not pose a threat to your travel plans. Travel during hurricane season can present major problems, as evidenced during Superstorm Sandy, which affected more than 50 cruise sailings over a 10-day period. Carry on necessities. In the event that you arrive at your cruise ship but your luggage doesn’t, be sure to pack a carry-on bag with the necessities you don’t want to be without (i.e. change of clothes, swimsuit, essential toiletries, and medications). Secure important documents. Since a cruise typically involves visiting multiple destinations or countries, bringing your passport is a must, and keeping it safe is essential. If you plan to use your driver’s license or photo I.D. as your main form of identification which in port, lock your passport in the safe in your cabin (assuming that the The famed Bike Shop in Berlin

Cycling on, we enter the Grosser Stern roundabout in the center of The Tiergarten, where the Victory Column stands as centerpiece. Time for repast, a bratwurst and

Berlin by Bike By Lizett Bond For a California girl growing up in the 60’s, the Berlin Wall cast a lingering shadow. My memories of The Cold War include “duck and cover” school drills, the voice of Walter Cronkite on the evening news, “Radio Free Europe” and an ever-present threat of nuclear war. Grainy black-and--*+white newsreels portrayed a grey, cold, despairing city while films depicted spy exchanges on the Glienicke Bridge and desperate bids of escape from the prison of East Berlin. When The Wall tumbled in 1989 and the reunification process began, the former DDR continued to carry that tainted image of a dull, depressed locale. Now, years later, the melding of two cities is still a work in progress but this historical metropolis is thriving and definitely worth a visit. A rainy, late night arrival provides the quintessential Berlin ambience. Traveling across the city, the most striking landmark encountered is the newly built Hauptbahnhof, the largest train station in Europe. The spectacular, illuminated glass and steel structure not only glows in the dark, but glistens with rain. Our hotel, the NH Berlin Friedrichstrasse, once hidden behind The Wall, is now part of the major shopping area of Berlin. Across a cobbled street from the hotel stands the Friedrichstrasse train station, also located entirely in East Berlin during the Cold War. How many Berlin-based espionage

Whether you have your passport ashore or on board the ship, it is a good idea to bring along a copy of your passport and credit cards … and leave a second set with a friend or relative back home. Wash up. Falling ill on a vacation is never fun, especially if you are at sea. The Center for Disease Control has already warned about the severity of the 2013 flu outbreak as one of the worst in recent years. One of the most important and basic precaution you can take to keep from getting sick is washing your hands on a regular basis, both on and off the ship. Regular handwashing has been found to be effective in helping to avoid the flu, common cold, Norovirus and other airborne bugs.

table. Food and drink are in constant supply on cruise ships, and while it’s easy to go back for seconds and even thirds at the buffet, it is also easy to get sick to your stomach. Eating until the point of fullness and limiting the intake of rich foods are good waves to prevent spending your vacation regretting overindulgence. The same goes for alcohol which, in addition to physical sickness, can often be involved in other accidents that

could require medical attention. Too much sun can also hamper your cruise. Be sure to wear sunscreen, a hat and stay hydrated to stay healthy.

Consider the family. According to cruise industry insiders, the greatest passenger growth this year is expected to come from families, including multigenerational families. Traveling with the young or elderly presents special concerns about health issues and you may wish to consider appropriate travel insurance in the event grandma or the baby needs medical help while at sea, or if the entire family needs to leave the cruise early should an emergency situation arise at home or at sea.

Title: Joy Deep As Sorrow (Whitewater Productions) You might be interested if you like: Doyle Dykes, Dan Fogelberg Tell me more: One of the founding voices of the modernday Christian music movement, singer-songwriter Bob Bennett has returned with a beautiful acoustic album that includes breezy folk rock (the heartful “Strange Joy”), lush folk (“Fairthful,” “Broken Beauty”) and even Americana-styled ballads (a cover of Steve Bell’s “Birth of a Song” and his own “Panhandled at the Western Wall”). Bennett’s Singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith’s 13th full-length album “Forever Endeavour” highlights a crop of fantastic new releases that also includes the first-ever album featuring The Slide Brothers, the latest sonic chapter courtesy of singer-guitarist Bob Bennett and an impressive debut from 17-year-old Scott James.

“Something To Talk About” INDIO – Fantasy Springs Resort Casino is giving the entire Coachella valley “Something to Talk About” with their most recent announcement of Bonnie Raitt live in concert Feb. 16 at 8 p.m. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is the latest of a handful of top acts to take the stage at the Special Events Center at Fantasy Springs. Raitt’s tour comes in the wake of the release of her 19th album “Slipstream.” This album marks her return to the studio after seven long years, as fans and the music industry alike have waited with great anticipation for its release. Much of this anticipation has been due to Raitt shifting away from Capitol Records and Warner Brothers, and releasing the album under her freshly launched independent label Redwing Records. Lauded with critical acclaim, bolstered by a huge U.S. Tour and considered one of the best albums of 2012 so far by Rolling Stone Magazine, ‘Slipstream’ is ongoing proof of Raitt’s continued popularity and relevance in American music. Raitt’s long and successful career began in the late ‘60s when she decided to move from Los Angeles to Cambridge, Massachusetts. As a Harvard/Radcliffe student majoring in Social Relations and African Studies, she attended classes and immersed herself in the city’s turbulent cultural and political activities. Three years after entering college, Raitt left college to commit herself full-time to music, and shortly afterward was opening for surviving blues heroes such as Sippie Wallace, Son House and Muddy Waters. Word spread quickly of the young red-haired blues woman, her

On his newly-released album “Forever Endeavour,” the acclaimed Canadian has issued yet another brillian collection of original songs. He tackles the haunting territory of self doubt with melodious depth on “Nowhere To Go” while elsewhere celebrating the joys of romantic love on “She Does My Heart Good” that is served with an undercurrent of melancholy via the sparse acoustic soundscape. Sexsmith can make even the routine magical,

on “Sneak Out the Back Door” Sexsmith sings of quietly slipping out the back rather than take a farewell tour as is the fashion nowadays. The album closes with the beautiful “The Morning Light” with Sexsmith addressing his own mortality even while celebrating the simple joy of waking to enjoy another day. Information: www. Warner Brothers was the first to take notice, and in 1971 released her debut album, “Bonnie Raitt.” Her interpretation of classic blues coupled with powerful slide guitar riffs made a lasting critical impression, and it was evident from early on that this talented musician was here to stay. Over the next six years she would record five albums. “Give It Up,” “Takin’ My Time,” “Streetlights,” and “Home Plate” were followed in 1977 by “Sweet Forgiveness,” which featured her first hit single, a gritty Memphis/R&B arrangement of Del Shannon’s “Runaway.” Three Grammy nominations followed in the 1980s, as she released “The Glow,” “Green Light,” and “Nine Lives.” Tickets for the 8 p.m. performance cost $89, $69, $49 at the Fantasy Springs Box Office, via telephone (800) 827-2946 or online at www. Hidden Away

Author Stephen Chobsky makes his screenwriting and directing debut with the adaptation of his acclaimed coming-of-age novel “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” a film critics have lauded as “The Breakfast Club” for a new generation. The story centers around a high school freshman, Charlie (Logan Lerman), a shy, introverted youngster who observes life from the sidelines until he is befriended by a pair of charismatic seniors who take him under their wings. Emma Watson, Hermione from the “Harry Potter” films, plays the beautiful free-spirited Sam and Ezra Miller (”We Need to Talk About Kevin“) is her fun-loving, fearless stepbrother Patrick. Their friendship introduces Charlie to his first love. He is drawn to Emma, but is too shy to reveal how deeply he cares for her since he is only a high school freshman and she is a senior. The pair also include Charlie in their wild parties and games like “Truth or Dare,” as well as midnight screenings of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and other adventures like searching for the perfect song. His intellectual gifts are noticed and nurtured by his Freshman English teacher, sensitively played by Paul Rudd (“This is 40”), who lends

Charlie books from his personal collection. He also gives Charlie extra assignment which help hone the boy’s outstanding writing skills. Charlie also comes from a loving family, headed by his dad (Dylan McDermott) but there is something troubling from Charlie’s past that is woven throughout the fabric of the

Audi Allroad

Returns Us To Roads In 2013

Audi is bringing back the iconic allroad - likely the only wagon ever to deliver on the “town and country” idea - without ever uttering those words. The allroad is an A4 Avant wagon with some improved off-pavement ability, although I seriously doubt many of them ever so venture. However, the Audi allroad is a capable machine when the driving conditions become less than favorable - it’s at home just about anywhere. The new allroad features a high-tech 2.0-liter engine with 211 horsepower and 258 pounds-foot of torque - making it faster and more fuel efficient than its predecessor. The real magic of this (and every Audi) is Quattro all-wheel drive, and this new generation steps up the car control game with enhanced ABS and traction control. The exterior features a unique single frame grille design with vertical chrome struts, stainless steel skid plates and side sills, and raised aluminum-optic roof rails. Matte finished lower bumpers and wheel arches are standard, while a full paint finish is optional. The Audi allroad will replace the A4 Avant starting in the 2013 model year. This new model is wider, taller and offers higher

ground clearance. Compared to its predecessor, the new allroad has a longer wheelbase for ride comfort and more headroom for front passengers. The allroad has 27 cubic feet of cargo space and a cavernous 50 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats folded down. An optional power tailgate is available. 18-inch wheels are standard, and 19-inch wheels are optional. The interior of the new allroad features a standard Panorama sunroof, 8-way power seats, and Aluminum Trigon inlays. Heated front seats, driver memory, a choice of three wood inlays, and a 505 watt Bang & Olufsen Sound System are optional. The allroad can also be equipped with a sports interior package featuring 12-way power front sport seats, and a three-spoke steering wheel with shift paddles. Audi offers several advanced technology features for the all-new A4 family, including adaptive front lighting and Audi side assist, which monitors the space behind and beside the A4 by radar and detects any vehicles in neighboring lanes. Driving in the A4 is also enhanced by the optional Driver Assistance package, which features adaptive cruise control that keeps the A4 at a constant distance from the

preceding vehicle, active lane assist, and dynamic steering. Dynamic steering varies the effort as well as the steering ratio at different speeds. Active lane assist allows the steering to help maintain lane discipline should the driver begin to sway outside of the lane markings without setting the turn signal. Audi is the first company worldwide to feature factoryinstalled wireless internet, enabling the innovative infotainment system called Audi connect. Previously available in the A6, A7, A8 and Q7, Audi connect will now be available on all A4 and A5 models, making Audi the only brand worldwide to feature this level of internet system integrated service in the segment. With Audi connect, the onboard MMI Navigation system is enhanced with Google Earth maps and real-time SiriusXM Traffic information, for a true aerial view of the route. This is by far the coolest and best navigation system I’ve seen since they first amazed me with moving maps and turn-by-turn directions. Audi connect also features real-time localized weather, news and live fuel prices; Google Local Search for

detailed information about travel destinations, such as restaurant or hotel hours, pricing and customer reviews; the myAudi Destination feature, which allows registered users to log on to Google Maps from any location and download up to 50 destinations to the vehicle; and a rolling Wi-Fi hotspot, allowing up to eight Wi-Fi-enabled devices to simultaneously use the wireless connectivity. Uber-cool, to say the least.

2013 Audi Allroad Pricing starts at $39,600 and the allroad is covered by Audi’s standard factory warranty. Fuel economy ranges from 21 to 29mpg. A long list of options and accessories are available. For more information, see your local Audi dealer or visit AudiUSA.com.

STARPalatePleasers Wang’s in the Desert 10th Anniversary

PALM SPRINGS – If you like to celebrate Chinese New Year like I do, there’s no better place in the Coachella Valley than Wang’s in the Desert located in the heart of Palm Springs. Starting on Sunday, Feb. 10, Wang’s owner, Pieter Van Winkel, will begin celebrating the Year of the Snake, which coincides with the restaurant’s tenth anniversary. Last August, Van Winkel hired famed Dutch designer Gigi to renovate Wang’s. Van Winkel spent more than $100,000 on the extensive remodel, but says he’s extremely happy with the outcome. Walking in the door immediately heightens your senses. The restaurant, bar and outdoor patio are filled with beautiful Asian artwork and images of the Buddha gracing the walls and every corner. An 8-foot-tall red statue of Buddha in deep meditation sits erect to greet patrons. “Having a red Buddha in the house or business brings good luck,” Van Winkel said, and you’ll always see a Buddha by the cash register in any Asian business. Gigi’s new décor gives Wang’s patrons a relaxing and artistic environment for mingling with adult friends and family. Mixed in between the Asian décor and furnishings are colorful vibrant photographs by local Photographer Terry Hastings. This mixture of Asian décor and modern photography

The Year of the Snake

Wang’s in the Desert presents a huge happy hour with an incredible bar menu is not only unique but inspiring. And we haven’t even ordered our meal yet! The recently renovated dining room is surrounded by a indoor bubbling stream with a bridge and waterfall. Among Palm Springs locals, Wang’s is known as the Hot Spot for their famous Happy Hour from 5 - 7:30 p.m. Most

nights you’ll find a packed bar and patio where locals relax listening to guest DJs spinning cool music while sipping one of their elegant well Martinis for only $4. Happy Hour appetizers start at an affordable $3 and single-sized entrees start at $6, so there’s no excuse for not sampling their bar menu which is prepared by the same chefs

that serve dining room guests. In my opinion, Wang’s in the Desert is the Valley’s premiere Asian restaurant. The main room is expansive with seating to accommodate up to 160 guests. The flexibility of the room makes it possible to accommodate smaller groups of 30 and a semi-private VIP room for up to 16 guests. Their outdoor patio seats 70 guests and large cocktail receptions can take advantage of the 20 foot open air bar. My husband, Tom, and I had the pleasure of dining at Wang’s recently and it was a fantastic meal. That’s saying a lot because I generally I’m not fond of Chinese cuisine. However, now I’m very fond of Wang’s. We started our meal with their Hot and Sour Chicken Soup ($4) made with tofu, egg, Wood Ear Mushrooms and Bamboo Strips - it was rated the best, even over restaurants in San Francisco’s

Chinatown. My taste buds exploded from the first bite of their delicious Walnut Shrimp entrée ($19.50) in a creamy mayonnaise , honey and mustard sauce with candied walnuts. My husband’s two top favorites were the General Wang’s Chicken ($14) made with onions, broccoli and walnuts in their special spicy Wang’s Sauce, and the Korean Spare Ribs ($9) braised in a secret soy BBQ sauce served on a tangy Korean Cole Slaw. Most of the dishes are of ample portion and suitable for splitting, unless you’re a really big eater. Wang’s is located at 424 S. Indian Canyon Drive in Palm Springs. Call (760) 325-9264 for reservations or to book a party. Wang’s also has a second location in San Diego at 3029 University Ave in North Park. ph (619) 291.7500 or www. wangsnorthpark.com/

“Remembering Huell”

TWENTYNINE PALMS - Friends, fans, and desert folks are invited to a Huell Howser Remembrance on Sunday, Feb. 10, from 2 to 5 p.m., at the 29 Palms Inn. The event is an opportunity to share stories and remember the work of the longtime television personality and Twentynine Palms resident, who passed away on Jan. 7, 2013. Howser was producer and host of “California’s Gold,” “Visiting with Huell Howser,” “Road Trip,” “California’s Golden Parks” and other series for the PBS station KCET-TV in Los Angeles. For 25 years, he traveled the state of California from one end to the other visiting towns, parks, and historical sites, and introducing the public to hidden gems and historical treasures in the golden state. In 1992, he came to the desert at the insistence of Ginny Salisbury of the Twentynine Palms Historical Society to film the move of the Old Schoolhouse to National Park Drive. He returned to film other shows about the area, including Joshua Tree National Park, the murals, and the annual Weed Show. In 1997, Howser purchased a home in Twentynine Palms, the former residence of Judy Dunn, and transformed the house into a mid-century modern showcase. He later purchased an additional home in Palm Springs, which is where Howser died of cancer at the age of 67. Born on Oct. 18, 1945, in Tennessee, he was named Huell, after his lawyer father, Harold, and his homemaker mother, Jewell. The Huell Howser Remembrance at 29 Palms Inn is being co-

hosted by the Twentynine Palms Historical Society, Joshua Tree National Park Association, and the City of Twentynine Palms. The event is free and open to the public. Any children in attendance must be accompanied by an adult at all times. 29 Palms Inn is located at 73950 Inn Avenue off National Park Drive in Twentynine Palms, (760) 367-3505. For more information about the event, contact Vickie Waite at (760) 217-8839 or Les Snodgrass at Twentynine Palms Historical Society (760) 367-2366.

You Might be a Hypochondriac if… The older I get, the more anxious I become about personal illness. When I was in my 20s, I never gave much thought to every odd ache or pain – it was mostly just “a muscular thing.” But today when I experience a sudden twinge, I’m sure its major organ failure. So, if I may channel Jeff Foxworthy along these lines, you too might be a hypochondriac if …. • You’re afraid to go fishing in case you catch something. • Every birthday, you treat yourself to a spa, massage, and MRI. • You continually pester your pharmacist to email you when the FDA approves a home colonoscopy kit. • On vacations, you check into the hospital before the hotel. • Your favorite reference web site is Sickipedia. • You plan on attending Hypochondriac Anonymous meetings, but always phone in sick. • You dread going to the supermarket in case a cashier asks if you’re ready to check out. • When offered Tic Tacs, you explain that you can only take two every four hours, after meals, with a glass of water. • You have more doctors than friends. • You swear you heard the doctor whisper to the nurse “we’ll know more after the autopsy.” • Your cell phone plugs into a stethoscope.

• For recreation, you touch up your X-rays with Photoshop. • Drug dealers regularly visit your home, but they’re from Pfizer, Merck, or Johnson & Johnson. • Your favorite bedtime story to read to the kids is “Goldilocks and the Three Bayers.” • You wear a medical gown to bed. • You live in fear of back injury whenever you jump to conclusions. • You don’t believe laughter is the best medicine; it’s morphine. • You’re too scared to use Preparation H because you wonder what was wrong with Preparations A-G. • You believe you suffer from several previously unknown ailments including: Mississippi Ladybug Fever, Fatal Late-night TV Insomnia, Bookworm, Lemon-Lime Disease, and Irritable Spouse Syndrome. • Each Valentine’s Day you send a card to your cardiologist. • Your family has to eat meals off a physician’s examination table in your dining room. • And, you might just be a hypochondriac, if you ask to be buried with a first aid kit. celebrities, and the board of directors. She is also skilled in administration and public policy. Gimbel succeeds Stephen Harmon, who retired in December. The Alzheimer’s Association has been moving rapidly to address the impending public health crisis. Alzheimer’s disease is projected to rise dramatically as the U.S. population ages and enters the stage of life where an Alzheimer’s diagnosis is most common. “This is an important time in the battle against Alzheimer’s and we are fortunate to have Anne’s skills and expertise as we address the growing need for programs and services in the desert,” Galeas added. “Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and the only one of the top 10 causes of death that is neither treatable nor preventable. It is absolutely essential that we bring the need for Alzheimer’s research

to the front of people’s minds, before the disease reaches epidemic proportions.” A shocking 5.4 million Americans are estimated to have Alzheimer’s disease, a number that is projected to rise to 16 million by 2050. Alzheimer’s will bankrupt California’s medical system in 20 years unless action is taken to improve care and treatment of the disease. The Alzheimer’s Association is the

Chinese New Year of Snake Sleeping in Winter

Chinese New Year begins Sunday, Feb. 10, at the new moon of Aquarius (22 degrees). It’s the Year of the Black Water Snake (known in the Midwest to be gentle). The element of the year is water, element of changeability. “Snake sleeping in winter” is a year of transformation, warning of a period of preparing for hard times. It’s a year of transforming and awaking humanity from its slumbering belief in all that’s untrue. A year of learning the difference between illusion and reality. It’s a year of transformation, the snake shedding its skin at times blinded. Colors of the year are black, dark green and indigo blue darkness of the seed underground. The darkness needed to gestate a new reality. Water is needed so the seeds, planted for future use, can come forth. All that occurs in 2013 will bear fruit in 2014. In the Year of the Snake we are to set our ship on course toward our long held dreams, hopes and visions. The Year of the Snake brings forth the Feminine archetypes – strength of the receptive, relational and reflective powers, shadowed for eons and emerging this year to stand equally with the masculine radiatory powers. We are to be poised and receptive as sudden shocks and realizations occur. As the New Year begins, we place a pine or cedar branch at our front door to welcome the Snake. We make a wish for the upcoming New Year – that a cherished dream come true. Tuesday, Feb. 12 is Mardi Gras. Wednesday, the Feb. 13, is Ash Wednesday. Lent comes early this year. ARIES: Compromise and teamwork are your keywords ithis new year. Your fiery character will relish the leadership they bring. You realize how important others help you learn. They are your blessings. You will change the way you view yourself and family. Something comes along that allows you to soar above all expectations. You learn to love differently. TAURUS: You will create safety and security as changes occur in the world. You seek to leave one place for another. However, that new place may not be revealed yet. All things unexpressed, and many items in your life, untouched for years, must come into the light. Eliminate as much as possible. You discover you’re really brave and bold. Speech suddenly finds you. GEMINI: It’s important to bring forth your dreams, hopes and wishes. Often they rest untouched within. Sometimes you don’t believe in them anymore

value your mind like never before. A certain level of tension creates a motivation within to change how you relate to others. You begin to reveal your true feelings. You realize the only things left to lose are untruths. LEO: You will become greater than you thought you could be. All suffering turns into joy. Joy is a quality of the Soul. Happiness is part of the personality. All parts of yourself, your past and present beliefs, will go through a clearing process. All that doesn’t support your future will begin to be eliminated. This will create a sense of protection. And you turn toward your home and tend to it with loving care. VIRGO: So much will change for you this year. Things will be shaken up and values that you thought important will be different within the next twelve months. You will want to burst forth and stand directly within the changes. You will want to be liberated from everything in the past. You have many natural talents. It’s a year for integrating and synthesizing them. Offer them to a greater cause. LIBRA: Relationships are a natural field of reality for you. Libras are in relationship to learn how to be in relationship, how to give and take, create boundaries, and how to always have Goodwill which creates Right Relations. Last year Saturn taught you the value of relationships (one in particular). This year you will experience a deeper intimacy. You will share more. And you will contact someone you’ve almost forgotten. SCORPIO: Your mind is like a beam of light, focusing upon things that need research. You continue with this discipline and undertake

great tasks You must begin to write more, detail your research, learn new healing techniques and tend to an emotional issue. You’re capable of healing self and others. And of creating a harmony that balances and brings forth long held dreams. This will be a powerful experience in your life. SAGITTARIUS: You’re called to adventure in the new year of the Snake. You’ll learn about commitment and find that your “grass” (think lawn, field of reality, endeavors) is actually greener. You begin to exchange information and ideas, creating real communication, and this makes you feel your life more truthful and liberating. You encounter polarities and meet them with compromise. Don’t resist the dark days. They offer information. CAPRICORN: Get your big boots on because this new year of the black water snake will be one of ambition, climbing the ladder and achieving a position of recognition. You have working with ethics and responsibly through the years creating a groundwork of preparation. In months to come you step into your authentic self. Your power is “power with others”. Never “power over others.” This is your strength. Your “yoga.” A Q UA R I U S : Unusual perspectives come to mind as the new year unfolds. Many will consider your ideas too radical. But you know what is true and important for your life to be fulfilled. You will meet all ideas with a sense of adventure and excitement. You know you must change the world. That is your Aquarian task. So you must be innovative, challenging, and speak the truth when needed. Tension will push you forward to construct the new universe. PISCES: You must choose rest and nourishment in the coming New Year, honoring the needs of your body, heart, mind and Soul. You must be near water, swim daily in warm pools and avoid anything processed and synthetic. Your energy is becoming subtle and powerful. Tend to you health. Neptune is transiting Pisces and you must take care of all levels of your physical world. So the many layers and dimensions of the spiritual work can take hold. Place crystals all around where you live. Several States Considering Legislation To Legalize Adult Cannabis Consumption By Allen St. Pierre, NORML Executive Director NATIONWIDE - Several States Considering Legislation To Legalize Adult Cannabis ConsumptionWashington, DC: Lawmakers in several states are anticipated to debate legislative measures this year that seek to legalize and regulate the adult use and retail distribution of marijuana as To date, lawmakers in six states - Hawaii, Maine, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont - have either pre-filed or introduced legislation to legalize marijuana consumption for adults. On Friday, memb ers of Hawaii’s House Judiciary Committee will hear testimony regarding House Bill 699, which seeks to tax and regulate the commercial production, sale, and use of cannabis by those persons age 21 or older. House Chairman, Rep. Joseph Souki, is sponsoring the measure. Nearly six out of ten Hawaii voters believe that cannabis should be “taxed, regulated, and legalized for adults,” according to a statewide poll published earlier this month. Only 39 percent of respondents opposed the idea. You can read NORML’s written testimony to the committee here. According to a January 2013 New Hampshire poll conducted by the firm Public Policy Polling, 53 percent of respondents favor “changing (state) law to regulate and tax marijuana similarly to alcohol.” Only 37 percent of respondents opposed the plan.

In Vermont, a 2012 survey of respondents in 148 Vermont cities throughout the state reported that one out of two Vermonters support legalization. On Election Day, 55 percent of voters in Colorado and Washington approved citizens’ ballot initiatives legalizing the adult consumption of marijuana and authorizing the state to license individuals to commercially produce and sell it. Nationally, nearly six out of ten Americans support legalizing cannabis, according to a just released Public Policy Polling automated telephone survey of 1,325 voters, commissioned by the Marijuana Policy Project. “Calling for an end to marijuana prohibition is no longer a political liability; it is a political opportunity,” said NORML Deputy Director Paul Armentano. “Never in modern history has there been greater public support for ending the nation’s nearly centurylong experiment with cannabis prohibition and replacing it with a system of legalization and regulation. Politicians who are seeking to amend this failed policy are aligning themselves with the majority. Those who do not are siding with an ever decreasing minority of their constituents.” For more information, please contact Allen St. Pierre, NORML Executive Director, at (202) 4835500 or Paul Armentano, NORML Deputy Director, at: paul@norml. org.
