DESERT HOT SPRINGS – Early this month, the city council adopted some goals which identified projects such as the feasibility of a new Community Library and a College of the Desert Learning Center to be fast-tracked and completed by 2014, said DHS City Manager Rick Daniels in a letter to the city council. “Now that the Community Health and Wellness Center is nearing completion, I have been able to provide greater focus on both of these projects. Former COD President Jerry Patton and former Vice President Edwin Deas worked sporadically on this project concept for more than four years and proposed to your council the concept at a Special Meeting in August of last year. “A non-binding letter of intent addressed to Dr. Joel Kinnamon, President of COD to administratively develop an agreement guiding our work on the facility program, plans, designs and architectural work and construction of the Learning Center Project on 4.5 acres city-owned land

CPV Sentinel Energy Project is on the rise and not just in its construction. CPV Sentinel Energy Project is a state-of-theart natural gas energy plant that is setting standards in non-renewable energy as well as renewable energy. Several weeks ago, Volume 7 No 2, the Desert Star Weekly reported on the large natural gas energy plant being built just west of Desert Hot Springs. Due to the objective reporting of the Desert Star Weekly, we were invited to an exclusive interview and up-close pictures of the plant. California Energy Commission (CEC) has overseen the project since its conception in 2006. There is always a Chief Building Official (CBO) onsite from

the CEC that oversees the whole project from start to finish. The control room is continually monitored by the plant operators. Operating data is provided to several outside agencies, including the CEC and SCAQMD. The construction and commissioning guidelines that CPV and GE have to follow ensure that the plant is designed, built and operated within the standards and guidelines that the State of California has put in place to protect the public. The CEC’s guidelines and standards for the plant can be found on CPV’s website, www.cpvsentinel.com/ library. CPV Sentinel Energy Project will be the “backstop” for the Coachella Valley, running only 15-30 percent of the time. continued on page 8

City Council Pros and Woes Cathedral City Equals Consensus while Desert Hot Springs Equals Dissention Recently, I and Desert Star Weekly Publisher Mike Perry, met with Cathedral City Mayor Kathleen DeRosa and their new City Manager Andy Hall to discuss several topics ranging from their balanced budget to attracting new business and achieving a consensus on the city council. Hall agreed that since DeRosa’s razor thin win (by 14 votes) in November’s election, he has seen a “true effort” on the part of each city council member to work things out. Each council member has their own frustrations but they also realize that if they’re going to compete for new jobs and growth, then they must say, okay, to those differences and compromise in order to build a consensus. “Our city council has been focused on the community and the issues, achieving a 5-0 vote most of the time,” Hall said during our meeting on January 16. “There may be an occasional 4-1 vote, but that is mostly on social issues,” Mayor DeRosa added. “We are a very committed group and understand how important

it is to have a consensus.” That is heart-warming to hear especially when compared to the chronic dissention that occurs in the neighboring city of Desert Hot Springs. Unfortunately for the residents of DHS, there are two city councilmen who appear

on heated issues, but somehow those cities seem to be able to reach a consensus for the betterment of their constituents, and the question looms large as why DHS cannot? City government and the growth of each city are dependent upon a consensus. We hear so

“It’s time for the entire Desert Hot Springs City Council to get on the same page. This is not about power and control, it’s about proving to a community that you have its best interest at heart.” to be “running the show” and it’s not a pretty picture. On Tuesday evenings, there is a five-hour marathon city council meeting where nothing seems to get done because these two council members create a huge riff by challenging and criticizing the city’s every move. Rarely has there been a 5-0 vote. Often the vote, on whatever issue, comes in at 3-2. No doubt things get a little sticky in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage and Cathedral City

much talk about DHS wanting to fix its bad reputation and negative image. Outsiders listen but go to a city council meeting and hear nothing but arguments with not a singular focus on moving the city forward. All people hear is dissention from two city council members. For once, I’d like to see the five person council get through a meeting and get things done without the chronic disagreement from Council men Adam Sanchez and Russell Betts.

January 30, 2013

American government, founded in the late 1700s, faced a leadership that was overseas, taking money through taxation without any representation. This situation led to the Revolutionary War. Today, a city council that has no singular focus and that suffers from chronic dissention is not the kind of representation that its residents wanted or voted for. These two city councilmen were elected from platforms that said, “I’ll get the job done,” and not from platforms that said, “I’ll block any progress at every meeting.” In my opinion, this lack of solidarity and dissention is not what the voters want or deserve. Never in all my experience living in a small community have I witnessed a public official being elected from a platform of dissention. My question is this: Does Cathedral City operate that smoothly? Do they have the consensus that Mayor DeRosa and City Manager Hall claim? Does their city council really choose an offer in compromise and do they build a consensus? After

looking at their recent voting record, the answer is “Yes.” How do five to seven people, who don’t think the same, manage to reach a consensus? Do they say, “I see what you mean, so let’s meet halfway?” It appears so. Unfortunately, it is obvious to anyone who attends a DHS city council meeting that Councilmen Sanchez and Betts have made their dissenting decisions without any glimmer of compromise. It’s time for the entire Desert Hot Springs City Council to get on the same page. This is not about power and control, it’s about proving to a community that you have its best interest at heart. LocalSTAR COD Board Launches Internal Audit PALM DESERT—At its regular meeting on Jan. 18, College of the Desert Board of Trustees accepted a proposal from the Fiscal Crisis & Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) to complete a management audit of college operations. At the request of the Board, COD President Joel Kinnamon presented the proposal and will now proceed with scheduling the work of the FC-MAT representatives. FC-MAT is well-known for its professional development, training and management audit services in the education industry. “When Dr. Kinnamon was hired, one of the early directions given by the Board was for him

to conduct a proactive and comprehensive internal analysis of the college organizational structure and operations,” stated Board Chair, Michael O’Neill. “The FC-MAT report is one component of the internal analysis being conducted by Dr. Kinnamon.” It is anticipated that the team will arrive on campus on Feb. 6. The team will be conducting a management audit designed to provide Dr. Kinnamon the information necessary for him to recommend to the Board an organizational structure that has adequate management and internal controls for the college to achieve its objectives while protecting it from

material weaknesses or errors. The Board of Trustees will be provided with ongoing updates as to the progress of the FC-MAT team. It is anticipated that the final report will be presented to the Board at the March meeting. In the meantime, Kinnamon will be providing updates to the Board, providing transparency while remaining sensitive to the confidential nature of some of the issues. O’Neill continued, “We are confident that, as the president completes his internal review, we will move the college forward and continue to provide our students and community with the quality education they expect and deserve.”

Tortoise Rock Casino Slated to Break Ground

TWENTYNINE PALMS - The Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians will break ground on a new, boutique casino just outside Palm Springs in Twentynine Palms. The project is expected to infuse the local High-Desert economy with a welcome boost in construction, retail, and gaming employment, as well as an increase in tourism to this quaint desert enclave. The new tribal gaming venue called Tortoise Rock Casino will be located in the city of Twentynine Palms, nestled between the majestic Joshua Tree National Park and one of the country’s largest military training facilities—the United States Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center. Tortoise Rock Casino will offer 30,000 square feet of gaming, retail, dining, entertainment, and office space. Guests will enjoy 500 Class III Slot Machines, 5 Table Games, and 2 Poker Tables. The casino’s design will complement the surrounding desert in a variety of ways, including landscaping that is both beautiful and eco-friendly, with high-tech recycling and water-reclamation features. “We have taken great care to design a beautiful casino property that will only add to the community as a whole,” says Darrell Mike, Chairman of the Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians which also owns and operates Spotlight 29 Casino in the nearby city of Coachella. “Not only are we using local contractors during construction, but Tortoise Rock will offer long-term stability in the Twentynine Palms community,

Such daily bizarre conduct is contrary to what has always been expected from young individuals in the middle of their education; it signals a very deficient indoctrination. The fact that the school from where these young students come straight to McDonald’s is next door to the shopping center could not keep the School Authorities unaware of such annoyance specially after the local Police had intervened on occasions. Wrongful Foreclosures Devastate Millions Of Families You know how to get away with robbing a bank (hypothetically speaking of course)? Rob 10,000 of them all within a year. The resources of the police agencies would be so overwhelmed looking for the bad guys that they might catch 500 of the thieves while the other 9,500 got away. That basically is what has happened to homeowners since the housing melt down began in 2008. Greedy bankers literally robbed their customers of their dwellings through wrongful foreclosures. Millions of homes have been illegally repossessed and resold by the banks to investors. To stop endless regulatory probes of their foreclosure practices, lenders have declared multi-billion dollar mea culpa’s (a Latin phrase that translates into English as “my mistake” or “my fault”.) Banks signed “oops” agreements with the Feds, forked over somewhere in the neighborhood of $25 billion for their wrongful foreclosure fraud (lenders loathe the word fraud – they would

This means that a lender can file a Notice of Default (NOD) once you fall behind in your mortgage payments, and after an additional short period of time, then file a Notice of Sale (NOS). Soon thereafter, your property can be sold at public auction if you’ve not taken some type of court action to stop the sale of your home. In non-judicial states the method to repossess real property is surprisingly short in terms of time, but also decidedly complicated. It is that exacting nature of the foreclosure process that creates substantial room for error by a lender and a solid defense for the homeowner in the event of a wrongful foreclosure claim against the lender. Therein lies the problem for homeowners who can prove they are a casualty of a wrongful foreclosure action. To have their case heard successfully in court requires someone educated in the science of law and potentially tens of thousands of dollars in legal costs to the homeowner. I admire attorneys.

Isreali Guide Dog Center With the press of all the Desert’s seasonal activities, sometimes an interesting story or two gets lost in the crush. That’s the way it was last year when Zohar Sharon, a blind Israeli golfer, played a round of golf in Palm Springs to benefit the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind and raise awareness about the obstacles that confront visually impaired Israelis. Sharon, the reigning World Champion Blind Golfer – a title he has earned three times in a row – had never played golf prior to losing his sight when defusing a chemical bomb. Now he regularly shoots in the 80’s and has had five hole-in-one shots in his career … two of them coming in the same round. But it is his remarkable energy and attitude not to let his blindness define himself that was the fundamental take-away lesson of the visit. This year, I’m circling Feb. 13 on my calendar. That’s the day Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind will present its annual fundraising luncheon and feature the remarkable accomplishments of another visually-impaired individual: mezzo-soprano Laurie Rubin. Blind since birth, Rubin, who is now 33, has performed at such international venues as Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall in London and Lincoln Center. The music critic for the “New York Times” lauded Rubin’s “compelling artistry,” but it is her drive to be better than others that is truly compelling. For luncheon tickets or more information about how you can aid the Israel Guide dog Center for the Blind, call 619-435-8226.

Hidden Harvest

Along with golf courses, tennis courts, swimming pools and an upscale lifestyle, the Coachella Valley is one of California’s main agriculture centers. But did you know that every year, millions of pounds of produce – a quarter of all food crops - are left un-harvested, plowed under or destroyed? The reasons: cosmetic blemishes, overproduction or dwindling market price. In 2001, Desert resident

percent of the children in the Coachella Valley live in poverty along with nearly a quarter of all adults, decided to do something to alleviate the problem; and, Hidden Harvest, a non-profit organization, was born. Hidden Harvest collects this unwanted produce and then distributes it to Valley agencies that feed the hungry. Using refrigerated trucks, each delivery is tailored to the food bank, soup kitchen or food pantry’s days and hours of service to ensure the produce arrives at its freshest. Deliveries are also made to apartment complexes designated for low-income senior citizens and to local schools with a high percentage of low-income students. Not only are the services of Hidden Harvest free, the organization also provides above minimum wages for those gleaning the fields picking produce destined for Hidden Harvest. Hidden Harvest has become so effective, (rescuing more than 11 million pounds of produce since 2001), it has been recognized by former President Bill Clinton and has been featured on the Clinton Health Matters Initiative’s Web site. While the services of Hidden Harvest are free, it still has expenses. So just over a year ago, a support group, “Friends & Family of Hidden Harvest” was formed to help spread the word about Hidden Harvest as well as to help with fundraising. The first fundraiser to benefit Hidden Harvest will be held on March 20th. More information is available at 760-398-8183.

Debuting this spring in its Mediterranean cruises, Crystal will offer a series of “Boutique Adventures,” a special program featuring shore-side experiences not available with any other cruise line. Accommodating between one and 15 guests, the specially designed Boutique Adventure outings provide cultural opportunities for deeper connections with local hosts and greater schedule flexibility. B o u t i qu e Ad ve n t u re s’ travelers in Florence, for example, will view the Uffzi Gallery’s private (normally closed to the public) Contini Bonacossi Collection featuring Bernini sculpture, Bellini and Savoldo paintings. Or, experience opera up close and personal with a special operatic performance at the world’s smallest historic public theater. Seen all the mandatory tourist sites in Rome? There is a Boutique Adventure that allows you to create unique souvenir

Crystal Cruise’s Teatro Concordia, the smallest historic theater in the world jewelry under the tutelage of a Valentino model-turned-museum jewelry designer who is opening her workshop for the first time ever, and only to Crystal guests. In Corfu, you can be one of only six guests per outing to receive a private painting lesson from the President of the Corfu Painters Society. There are two Boutique Adventures scheduled for Funchal. One is a private lunch at the elegant Reid’s Palace with a local celebrity; the other is a private visit to a family-run Madeiran winery followed by a leisurely, homemade lunch with the owners. If the culinary arts are your interest, you can improve your kitchen skills in either Sorrento or Taormina via hands-on cooking lessons and meals with local Michelin-star chefs. Prices for the Boutique Adventures range from $223 to over $1,000 per person. But you can afford it; on-board, Crystal’s ships are all-inclusive, making it easy to budget for your favorite land-excursions. Participation is first come, first serve, with itineraries and prices set six months before each cruise.

Fare

It may only be the end of January, but it’s never too early to think about vacations, especially the how-to-get-there part. As you may have noticed, last year was not a people-friendly year for airline travel. This year is looking like more of the same. One of the biggest changes for 2013 will be an increase in ‘bundled fare’ pricing. Standard airfares will remain, but with new tiered options for an additional fee. What do you get for that additional fee? The airlines call them ‘perks,’ such as free checked bags, a couple of inches of leg room in certain parts of Economy Class and the elimination of change fees; I call them entitlements. If any more proof is needed that airlines are determined to turn any passenger- activity into a profit center, just look at Southwest Airlines. The no-frills carrier has announced yet another way passengers can be among the first

Group Travel Opportunities in 2013 Are you ready to travel this year? Would you prefer to travel with a group? Then traveling with the Palm Desert Area Chamber of Commerce is the way to go. For 2013 the Chamber is scheduling up to four trips – Spain, Germany/ Austria during Oktoberfest, Cuba, and trip to Vietnam in November. Embark with a group for a low fare. Trips include roundtrip airfare and nine days of travel with seven nights of accommodations, guides, quality tour busses with some meals. First trip scheduled trip will embark to Spain on Mar. 5. The group will experience Coast del Sol, staying 7 nights at the Hotel Amargua, Torremolinos with stops including Seville, Malaga, the Rock of Gibraltar, shopping at the Kasbah bazaars and more.

The second trip is to Cuba! The Chamber just recently returned from it’s first Cuba trip and is ready to take another group of adventurers starting May 3 to explore Havana. Like classic cars? Then Cuba is the place to go…it’s like a working classic car showroom. American influence

has not touched Cuba since the 1950s! And it shows! The third trip is to Austria & Germany, taking flight on Oct. 4, and arriving in Munich in time to start the trip with experiencing Oktoberfest in Munich. Trip includes seven nights at the Hotel Grauer Baer in Innsburg, with day trips to explore the city and great sidetrips including Salzburg and the Italian Alps. A fourth adventure is a potential trip to Vietnam. Are you ready to go global with your local Five Star Area Chamber of Commerce? Ready to have some adventure and make some memories? to board using a coveted “A” boarding pass. On the day of travel, beginning 45 minutes before the flight departs, passengers with credit cards will have the opportunity to purchase one of the earliest available boarding positions at the gate for $40 per flight. A spokesman for Southwest said that this new boarding option was tested in San Diego last month and received “positive feedback” … really? Have you noticed how full your plane was on your last flight? Reduced capacity is another trend that began in 2012. According to industry analysts, this decrease in capacity, coupled with increased demand from leisure travelers will continue to cause fare surges. How, do you avoid this? You can’t, but the best way to mitigate uncertain airfares is to book early to avoid increasing prices and to fully understand what is included with your fare. The average booking window for domestic trips is 54 days, versus 78 days for international trips. But, there are some savings … if you know where to look. Because they are relatively inexpensive and unexplored, Central and South America have become increasing popular destinations, with

significant surges in Latin American bookings over last year to such locals as Santiago, Rio de Janeiro and Costa Rico.

Across the Atlantic an uptick in travel to Greece, Span, Italy and Turkey is expected. Prices are relatively cheap and the respective governments see tourism as a means for economic growth. If you are thinking about moving your vacation up from the traditional summer travel months and want to avoid the crowds, online travel sites are ranking the current top five international destinations as Cancun, Manila, San Jose, Lima and Trinidad and Tobago.

Promising Artists & Modern Music With the line up for the 14th Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival set, now is the time to start becoming more familiar with some of the promising artists scheduled to perform at the annual event. The double-weekend event (April 12-14 and 19-21) boasts its share of celebrated legends and promising young acts, all of which help make the annual music fest such an essential destination for modern music lovers. As an introduction to a handful of my some of my favorite acts bound for Coachellafest, here is a list of albums worth a listen.

Artist: The Stone Roses Album: The Stone Roses (Legacy Edition released by Silvertone Records in 2009). Tell me more: The Stone Roses’ eponymous debut album, originally release d in 1989, ranks as one of the greatest British rock albums of the era. In 2009, the album was released in an expanded 20th anniversary

reissue edition that includes two audio CD discs and a bonus DVD featuring a concert and six additional videos. The Stone Roses will perform on April 12 and 19.

Artist: Blur Album: Parklife Records)

Tell me more: With the exception of The Kinks, there has never been an English band quite as British sounding as Blur. It has been more than a decade since the original four-man line up of

Artist: Band of Horses Album: Infinite Arms (Columbia)

Tell me more: Fans of Neil Young, the late Gram Parsons and My Morning Jacket will all find something to admire in the emotive alt country-tinged songs that fill Band of Horses’ 2010 “Infinite Arms.” There is an authenticity and sonic beauty here that is ideally suited to these songs being performed in the wide open spaces - including here in the California desert. After discerning listeners fall in love with “Infinite Arms,” they can get the group’s more recent release “Mirage Rock” too. Saddle up and catch Band of Horses on April 12 and 19.

Robert Kinsler

Artist: Social Distortion Album: Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes (Epitaph)

Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree have brought their fantastic brand of rock stateside. Before the band makes its triumphant return on April 12 and 19, check out Blur’s wonderful 1994 album “Parklife” (released as an expanded reissue in 2012). Songs such as the infectious “Girls & Boys,” singalong “ Tracy Jacks” and epic Britpop ballad “This is a Low” will sound amazing in the desert night.

Tell me more: Mike Ness and company have been belting out some of the most blistering rock since the late 1970s. On the Orange County, California-based outfit’s most recent album (“Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes”) real world themes and fiery music are front and center. “Road Zombie,” “Diamond in the Rough” and “Bakersfield” are among the standouts on this excellent disc, which marked the group’s first full-length release since 2004’s equally-powerful “Sex, Love and Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Social Distortion will perform on April 14 and 21.

Artist: Sigur Ros A l b u m : Ta k k Records)

No matter what the label, Melissa Etheridge fans have been enjoying her music and following her career since she began playing in Los Angeles area bars in the early 1980s. Signed by Island Records, she has been a core artist for them ever since her critically-acclaimed, self-titled debut album went doubleplatinum, with the single “Bring Me Some Water” being nominated for a Grammy. Her first Grammy win for Best Female Rock Vocal came for “Ain’t It Heavy” from “Never Enough.” Etheridge went big time with her breakthrough album “Yes I Am” featuring the massive hits “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window,” a searing song of longing that brought her second Best Female Rock Grammy. The album went six-times platinum and spent more than two

Tell me more: To listen to Icelandic troupe Sigur Ros is to be transported to another world. “Takk” is likely the most accessible album by the band, and the perfect introduction to one

of the most original and shining artists coming to Coachella 2013. And as amazing as “Takk” is, the group’s concert performances are even more otherworldly. Sigur Ros will perform on April 13 and 20. Etheridge’s astonishing success continued as she was honored as Songwriter of the Year at the ASCAP Pop Awards in 1996 and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2007 for the film documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.” “Besides being an incredible performer, Melissa Etheridge has bravely faced breast cancer and has been an incredible role model for people who might have been struggling with their own sexuality when she came out publicly as a lesbian,” said Barbara Keller, co-chair of the 2013 Steve Chase gala. Keller’s co-chair, Jim Casey added, “And Melissa Etheridge is just the start of what we have to offer this year. If you don’t want to miss out, you’ll save the date and buy your tickets now.” As one of the signature fundraisers for Desert AIDS Project, the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards last year raised more than $1.4 million for client services. Travel ‘To Rome With Love’

Neverland with Disney‘s ‘Peter Pan’

Writer, director Woody Allen recently took us to Paris in his fanciful fable “Midnight in Paris.” Now we can join him for a series of romantic Roman romps in his latest film comedy “To Rome With Love,” available on Blue-ray and DVD. As always Woody knows how to showcase a city, filming beautiful scenic locations from the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps to the Coliseum as a lush musical score plays in the background. And, if you have ever asked a local for help in Italy, you’ll be especially amused by the elaborate verbal directions given to a young bride in the film who is looking for a nearby beauty salon. Using street names with left or right turn information is not the Italian way, rather you are told about landmarks and shops you will pass en route. These scenes brought back fun memories of

handsome young Italian lawyer who decides it would be easier to take her to her destination than try to tell her how to get there. Their encounter leads to romance and soon her parents (Woody Allen and Judy Davis) are flying

The lengthy directions, which we wrote down, included all sorts of canal bridges, toy stores and shops we would pass along the way--and to our amazement we actually found the place. This is not the case for the young newlywed who inadvertently winds up on an outdoor movie set where she is befriended by one of the stars of the film who turns out to be more than helpful. At the same time her sweet, naive young husband is surprised by a visit from Penelope Cruz who has been sent to his hotel room as a gift “from a friend.” Woody Allen’s daughter also asks for directions from a

In this lighthearted, picturesque love letter to the Eternal City, writer, director Allen weaves a series of romantic, humorous stories together, creating a cinematic tapestry that focuses on young lovers, fiancées, an opera singer, an architect, famous Italian film celebs and an unknown Italian office worker (Roberto Benigni) who, like the Kardashians, has no particular talents. Nevertheless, Roberto becomes a TV media darling in spite of himself with an adoring fan base fascinated by his inane life. Soon he is followed everywhere by reporters asking him what he ate for breakfast or whether he wears boxers or briefs. The other story in this blend

Scene from “To Rome With Love” of tales deals with an American architect (Alec Baldwin) who, while on a business trip to Rome, revisit’s the apartment he lived in thirty years earlier. On the way to his destination he encounters a budding architect (Jesse Eisenberg). Soon the older, wiser architect tries to save the younger man from making a terrible mistake involving his girl friend’s best friend (Ellen Page), an actress who has come to Rome following a failed relationship. At first it seems a bit chaotic, but just relax because all the pieces from each story eventually fall into place. From Sony Pictures Classics, rated R for some sexual references. Living LongerSTAR Grant Awarded for Stem Cell Research The upcoming February 2013 issue of Life Extension Magazine reports that the Life Extension Foundation (LEF) has given more than $2 million dollars to famous biological researcher Michael West, PhD. to determine if stem cell injection into human beings can result in virtual immortality. The February issue also contains an article by Michael West, “How Engineered Stem Cells May Enable Youthful Immortality” which we will briefly summarize below and in coming issues. This news comes immediately after the last two issues of this newspaper, the Desert Star Weekly, reported that in 2012 the John Templeton Foundation awarded a $5 million grant to Philosophy Professor John Fischer of the University of California at Riverside to conduct a three year study of the current scientific research into human immortality. (See The Desert Star Weekly for January 17 and 23, 2013). Also in December 2012, California’s stem cell funding agency, The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, approved nearly $100 million in grants for stem cell research into heart disease, cancer and spinal cord injuries. A computer search indicates that other States and the Federal Government as well are now also providing many millions for other stem cell projects. In my opinion, this massive funding demonstrates that humanity is now experiencing a new historical stage of biological revolution, a revolution that will completely transform our health, our relationships, our politics and our social structure. The beginning of this revolution was marked by the 1983 publication of the remarkable 853 page book “Life Extension” by physicist Durk Pearson and biochemist Sandy Shaw. The book, “Life Extension” was followed by the publication of a companion volume by Pearson and Shaw titled“The Life Extension Companion.” I recommend to the readers of this newspaper that they obtain both volumes for their personal libraries as the best way to learn valuable information for “adding years to your life and life to your years.” Here are the first words Pearson and Shaw wrote in their book “Life Extension.” These words are a good introduction to the Michael West article. “Until late in this century, the dream of lengthening the human life span was purely a matter of science fiction. Nothing could be done about it. Many, nevertheless, tried. Five hundred years ago,

www.desertstarweekly.com

Leonardo da Vinci dissected many corpses in an attempt to discover the secrets of life and death. But there was inadequate basic biological knowledge for him to draw upon in his studies. Benjamin

Mr. Life Extension Art Kunkin

Franklin even wrote in a letter that he regretted that he could not be preserved in a wine cask, to be revived after a hundred years or so.” As useful background, it also needs to be mentioned that Pearson -Shaw, as well as the contemporary two scientific grants

mentioned, make no reference to the considerable research into immortality done by alchemical scientists throughout history beginning earlier even than ancient Egypt and Sumeria. However, as this column and my other writings have reported, alchemical research may have already provided a practical method for increasing the human life span. See the reference to my own book below. To clarify my own involvement in this research, I began publishing a “Life Extension Newsletter” in 1983. This newsletter was inspired by the appearance of the Pearson-Shaw book and while I was completing my own seven-year alchemical apprenticeship in Salt Lake City, Utah. In their introductory comment to the Michael West article, the editors of Life Extension magazine say, “This is a report of a blueprint by which newly developing technologies may be used to induce

biological immortality in human beings. This research goes far beyond what is normally published in Life Extension magazine.” “When perfected, these research findings may enable doctors to inject progenitor stem cells that will regenerate every tissue in your body, thus restoring you to youthful health and vigor. Some readers will find this article challenging to comprehend (but it is suggested that) everyone review it several times to understand how close we may be to achieving meaningful reversal of aging processes.” “This article also contains new findings about how easy it is to increase your telomere length, which has been shown to confer longevity and protect against agerelated disease.” As Michael West explains at considerable length, telomeres are the caps at the ends of the DNA molecules that provide the genetic information which determines the various features of the human body. The telomeres are believed to be the “clock” that keeps track of how many times the individual cells divide, a clock that shortens as the cell ages. Therefore, telomeres are considered very important in determining the age and state of the particular body (somatic) cells, whether of the heart, liver, stomach, etc. If the telomeres can be kept at their initial length, it is believed that body aging can be stopped. And since stem cells are the non-specialized cells that initially become the somatic cells, the medical ability to inject new stem cells would probably make the body immortal. To fully understand these medical concepts, we refer our readers to the article by Michael West in the February 2013 “Life Extension” magazine and to further “Living Longer” columns. Art Kunkin is the 84-year young journalist who founded, published and edited the alternative newspaper Los Angeles Free Press in the 1960s and 70s. He later became president of the Philosophical Research Society and now lives in Joshua Tree, California. A magazine cover story interview with Art about his research into stopping aging is available at www.alchemyrevealed. com as is information about his book, “Life Extension Alchemy.” For information about the class on life extension, alchemy and conscious reincarnation being taught on Thursday nights by Art in Joshua Tree, please email him at artkunkin@gmail.com or phone the Joshua Tree Retreat Center at 760365-8371. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder`s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 1-800-280-2832 or visit this Internet Web site www.auction.com, using the file number assigned to this case 12-00227-5. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligations secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of this Notice of Trustee`s Sale is estimated to be $265,403.27 (Estimated), provided, however, prepayment premiums, accrued interest and advances will increase this figure prior to sale. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800-280-2832 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site www.auction.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case 20120159902917. Carbs - Do dogs really need them? Some people say they’ve switched to grain-free dietsbecause “dogs don’t need carbs.” While that’s true – both dogs and cats have no nutritional need for carbohydrates – the term‘grain-free’is not a statement for zero carbs. In fact, kibble based diets can containplenty of carbohydrates in the form of vegetables like white potatoes, sweet potatoes, peas and tapioca. So, while grains may be out, don’t be fooled, carbs are not! When choosing the best diet for your dog, it is important to recognize that all essential nutrients can be consumed from good sources of animal proteins and fat.Growing in popularity, these grain-free diets perform well for dogs that thrive onfoods with higheramounts of fat andprotein which naturally ups the price tag. Whether or not you should opt to feed your dog a diet free of grains depends on your dog’s gastrointestinal feedback and your budget. Some dogs have good stool quality when there are grains in the diet, and others do not. Fiber does help to regulate the transit time of the bowel contents and form of the stool. However, fiber can be obtained from vegetables alone. One favorite is canned pumpkin. Knowing that dogs can get everything they need from a diet that contains only protein and fat,why feed carbs? There are two matters of consideration – convenience and cost. We know thatthe opportunistic domestic dogevolved and adapted to eating family leftovers – convenient for us and cheap, too! Dr. Sean Delaney, an expert in animal nutrition, classifies carbohydrate content in dog food as “low” when less than 25 percent of the calories are from carbohydrates; “moderate” when 25 to 40 percent of

their calories are from carbohydrates. Using this guidepost – anything over 40 percent would be classified as “high.” Diets formulated high in carbohydrates enjoy higher company profits – noWalmart bargain for your dog’s health! Nor is the carbohydrate content listed on pet food labels. However, you can estimate the carb load by a simple calculation. As an example, add together the following typical percentages found in kibble diets and subtract the total from 100: protein 25 percent; fat 15 percent; fiber 4 percent; Moisture 8 percent; ash 3 percent. Subtract 55 from 100 and you are left with a carbohydrate percentage of 45 – nearly half of what’s in the bag! My advice is to keep carbs at a low level, less than 25 percent of the diet, since we know that nature designed canines to be predators, not grazingsheep. H owe ve r, there may be medical conditions that recommend lower fat or protein foods – allowing a higherthan suggested carbohydrate load to meet demand for calories. On the other hand, a select number of dogs cannot tolerate any amount of grains or the grain content must be Dr. Paula Terifaj, DVM limited. Failure to recognize these dogs will result in ongoing medical problems such as abnormal stools, poor appetite, vomiting and failure to thrive. Acclaimed Russian Pianist Yanna Reznik

PALM SPRINGS - When the Palm Springs Community Concert Association begins its 2013 series on January 31, a uniquely gifted keyboard artist, Yana Reznik, will dazzle and inspire. Widely hailed as a first-rate piano virtuoso, Russian born Reznik has stunned and surprised audiences across the globe with her passionate, captivating performances. From Disney Hall, L.A., to Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, N.Y., Resnik is reminiscent of greats like Horowitz, Rubenstein and Serkin in repertoire and style. Her Palm Springs audience will likely hear masterworks by fellow Russian composers Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev, as well as her sentimental American favorite, George Gershwin. Resnik holds degrees from the Manhattan School of Music, USC School of Music and has studied at the Rachmaninoff School in Moscow. When not performing on some international

stage, Reznik is at home in California where she is Artistic Director for the “Live at the Lounge” concert series in Hermosa Beach, an unconventional venue which brings classical music to a broader audience. The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Palm Springs High School Auditorium, one of the most venerable and distinguished venues in the desert, 2248 E. Ramon Rd., Palm Springs. Tickets are available at the door for $20 – or a full season pass for just $50. The Palm Springs Community Concert Association is the oldest performing arts organization in the Coachella Valley, bringing first rate, internationally acclaimed performing artists to the desert for more than half a century. This is the first in a series of four concerts sponsored by the Palm Springs Community Concert Association for 2013– its 54nd season in the desert. This grass roots association of music lovers plans and finances its season by advance subscription and offers complimentary reciprocal participation in the concert events of 8 other Southern California “sister cities” in the Community Concert family. Music for Our Winter Rituals

There’s a lot of planetary movement (planets changing signs) this week. Mars (energy) enters Pisces and Venus (love) enters Aquarius on Friday. On Tuesday, Mercury (communication) also enters Pisces. This creates a shifting of energies in our world. Pisces attempts to save the world as Aquarius attempts to change the world. Friday (Feb. 1) is St. Brigit’s Day. Saturday (Feb. 2nd) is Groundhog Day, Candlemas Day and Imbolc, a “cross-quarter” day between winter solstice and spring equinox with the Sun’s light each day is increasing in power. St. Brigid’s (healer & founder of an art school in Ireland) Day continues as a folk tradition with the making of corn dollies dressed in ribbons, shells and stones. Imbolc (ewe’s milk) is a Gaelic agrarian festival associated with birthing of spring lambs and the blooming of the Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) bush – a dark thorny shrub with plum-like astringent fruits. Imbolc, a festival of light indicating spring is near, is a festival of special foods (butter, milk and scones [bannocks), candles, hearth fires and bonfires. The fires signify the return of Sun’s warmth. Imbolc, in ancient times, was a day of weather divination. A watch was held night and day to see if serpents or badgers emerged from their winter dens - like our Groundhog Day. February 2nd is also the Purification of the Virgin Mary Feast Day -forty days after a young Jewish woman bears a child she must go to the temple for a mikvah [purification bath), a blessing and to present her child. During Candlemas (another fire symbol) beeswax candles are blessed in the church and distributed to the people to light during thunderstorms

Cello Virtuoso to Thrill Music Lovers PALM SPRINGS - Sebastian Baverstam, a classical performer whose talents seem to have out-paced his youth, is the featured performer in the Palm Springs Community Concert Association’s second event of 2013. Growing up a true prodigy in a household of amateur musicians, Sebastian quickly progressed to concert status, performing at age six at Harvard and with the Salem Phiharmonic at seven. While still in his teens Baverstam, who holds dual U.S./Swedish citizenship, began playing the Eastern “concert circuit” to rave reviews. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Palm Springs High School Auditorium, one of the best venues in the desert for comfort and acoustics. Tickets for the performance are available at the door for $20. Winner of the 2009 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, Sebastian has performed at Carnegie Hall, been the subject of a PBS documentary, and toured China, Venezuela and Brazil as a soloist. The 24-year-old performer transports audiences with the heartthrobbing power of his performances,

showing passion and precision in his interpretations of the musical drama bequeathed to us by the great composers. Concert-goers are sure to hear masterworks by contemporary composers as well, with whom Sebastian has a special affinity. and place in windows to ward of storms. Candlemas is the last Festival of Christmas Feast Day. Johann S. Bach composed music for February 2nd – “Mariae Reinigung” (Purification of Mary). Music for our winter rituals. ARIES: With the Sun in Aquarius, friends, groups, hopes, wishes and dreams are all important. Community is, also. You want your dreams to come true, you want a light sociability to permeate your life, you want to be happy, lighthearted and

not be captured by anything in particular. You want to be free. Making true contact with others is also important. Always have Goodwill. Then your dreams do come true. And contact happens. TAURUS: Your standing in the world is emphasized at this time and a place is made for you to exhibit your talents and gifts. Usually you’re behind the scenes supporting others. Now you’re in the spotlight, accomplishing important work with competency and sensitivity. Your vision is practical, your results apparent and your star shines. People love you. GEMINI: This is a quiet internal time for you. An inner transformation is creating growth and regeneration. You’re not necessarily out and about. The focus is on retreat and solitude. Care for finances, the deeply personal and intimate, and things psychological that you want to change. You will recognize your strengths, talents and gifts more easily. Share them. CANCER: Talking with those you trust allows for more self- understanding, important at this time. You seek a mirror, which helps you realize your potential. You also seek a change in your social life. You want an “us” for companionship. For this to occur include others more often. You’re used to doing everything alone. Think about diplomacy but don’t harbor secrets. LEO: It’s good to review how your daily life unfolds. It’s important that you take pride in all that you do. This means creating daily and weekly routines that you can depend upon, seeking what is worthwhile (of your time and attention) and what is not. Creating detailed order in your life creates opportunities to eliminate nonessentials. You seek to be perfect. You are. VIRGO: You have been like a mother bird in a nest, tending, caring and nurturing. Now you must be out and about and express yourself. You need a bit of pleasure and amusement, self-expression, freedom and play. Wear bright colors and express appreciation. It’s good to be with children, take some risks and spread a little

happiness around. LIBRA: Your home is most important to you at this time. Nesting is important for a while. Instinctively you’re concerned with family, property, your roots and heritage and more so with the beauty around you. It’s important to begin planting, to send down roots as a metaphor that strengthens your relationships, especially with family. It’s always good to start over to rebuild trust. SCORPIO: There’s movement, busy exploration and searching in the next weeks. You seek new connections, pay attention to your surroundings, create social interactions and become more and more light-hearted. You will have errands, phone calls to make. You will give people more of your time and this solidifies connections. You remember the esoteric statement, “contact releases love.” You will have “little adventures” SAGITTARIUS: You must explore more of your town’s neighborhoods. Or neighborhoods in town you’re most enchanted with. Exploration allows us to adapt and come to greater understanding. This exploration includes the behaviors and attitudes of friends, siblings, relatives, coworkers and those close to you. Do you have multiple realities you must tend to now? This is because you’ve become even more resourceful, enjoying your intelligence and intuitive knowledge. Express yourself with real confidence. CAPRICORN: What matters to you for a while are comfort, security, things material. You consider what is of value and what is of comfort. They two must go handin-hand. You’re also taking a hard look at finances. Eventually your creative ideas will enhance your financial future. You don’t make unnecessary purchases at this time. But do tend to yourself with the utmost care. Your needs tell you what comforts you. Knowing this, you can then “carry on.” AQUARIUS: Your appearance, personal identity, self-expression and out-in-the world behaviors are all highlighted by the Sun. You are literally illumined within and without by the Sun. Therefore you make a great impression upon others. There’s more spontaneity and more ability to change, saying goodbye to the past. You have confidence, the energy to create something new and fulfill personal endeavors. Be brave and be direct. A new path is presented. Happy Birthday! PISCES: It’s again a time of retreat and solitary thinking. A time to consider what things in your life, people, geographies, possessions, agendas are no longer useful and must be eliminated. Although it’s not time to initiate new realities, it is time to reflect, dream and envision. Many things you have outgrown. During this month allow yourself to rest more and prepare for an entirely new cycle to come forth. You have a birthday soon. A new solar cycle beginning. Indio Shooting Incident

On Sunday, Jan. 20, at approximately 7:25 p.m., Indio Police Officers responded to a report of a person with a gunshot wound at the intersection of Van Buren Street and Dr. Carreon Blvd. Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult female on the side street area of Van Buren Street near Dr. Carreon Blvd with a single gunshot wound to the lower body area. The female was transported to a local hospital by Indio Fire Department Paramedics for medical treatment. The female is currently in serious condition at the hospital. It appears the female victim is a homeless person and it’s unknown at this time why the shooting incident occurred. Indio Police Officers are on still scene investigating and the only information they have is that a dark colored four door possible Chrysler PT Cruiser was last seen leaving the area driving west bound on Dr. Carreon Blvd from Van Buren Street. We have no further suspect(s) information at this time. Subject demanded police to shoot him On 011413, at approximately 1340 hours, CCPD officers were dispatched to the 33140 block of Cathedral Canyon Dr,

regarding an irate subject breaking Christmas lights at the location. The reporting party was terrified and immediately hung up the phone after calling. The reporting party called back and advised Dispatch the subject had a pellet rifle that realistically resembled a hunting rifle and wanted the police to shoot him. CCPD officers were familiar with residence due to the fact they had responded to the same location under similar circumstances. On the pervious occasion the subject stated he would make police to shoot him if they showed up again. Officers had knowledge the subject had prior convictions for narcotics, assault with a deadly weapon, armed robbery, felon in possession of a firearm, and attempted murder. As officers arrived they heard the sound of a weapon being shot in the area. CCPD officers cordoned off the area. CHP’s H63 responded to assist. CCFD also responded as a precaution. The subject climbed atop the roof with a rifle. Officers called the subject and spoke with him. He told the officer on the phone he had an “automatic rifle,” he wanted to be “front page news,” and wanted “suicide by cop.” After almost an hour the subject was peacefully detained without further incident. It was .22/5.5 Caliber pellet rifle with a scope. The subject, Christopher Lopez Ramirez, 39, of Cathedral City was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation. Neither Ramirez, reporting parties, witnesses, nor officers were injured during this incident.
