Build-a-bike Event Brings Holiday Happiness to Kids By Jennifer Braun

Desert Hot Springs – This holiday season MSWD employees participated in donating 36 bikes and helmets to the neediest children in the area. From among the Family Resource Center’s (FRC) client list, organizers matched the bikes by age

and gender to the fortunate recipients. FRC is a community resource funded by Department of Public and Social Services, Children Services Division. Not only did the children receive bikes, each had an opportunity to be greeted by Santa himself. They also received

toys donated by citizens and various organizations and were referred to other sources for food, gifts and new clothing, a fitting tribute this holiday season. There were tears from parents, FRC staff and board members, laughter and great big smiles from everyone. One of the children took a hold of the handlebars with a look of surprise on his face that seemed to say, “This is too good to be true!” Each bike had a hang tag with the name continued on 18

The New Year:

A Historical Prospective

I made some New Year’s resolutions for 2013, first by reflecting back on resolutions from 2012, and the very important one I kept - I quit smoking as a gift to my husband. He quit too, so this year we want to keep another milestone resolution to lose weight, get in shape and eat healthy foods. From people I’ve spoken to across the Coachella Valley over the New Year’s holiday, it appears that losing weight, exercising and eating better seems to be the battle cry for 2013. And there is no better place than California to eat a healthier diet because of all the fabulous fresh fruits and vegetables we get year round. But an editorial on New Year’s resolutions would fall short without knowing the history of New Year’s and all its accompanying festivities, including those nasty resolutions. So I did some research on the Internet and came up with a history of the New Year. I hope you enjoy the information as much as I did. According to the History Channel, “Civilizations around the world have been celebrating the start of each new year for at least four millennia. Today, most New Year’s festivities begin on December 31 (New Year’s Eve), the last day of the Gregorian calendar, and continue into the early hours of January 1 (New Year’s Day). Common

traditions include attending parties, eating special New Year’s foods, making resolutions for the new year and watching fireworks displays. “The earliest recorded festivities in honor of a new year’s arrival date back some 4,000 years to ancient Babylon. For the Babylonians, the first new moon following the vernal equinox—the day in late March with an equal amount of sunlight and darkness—heralded the start of a new year. They marked the occasion with a massive religious festival called Akitu (derived from the Sumerian word for barley, which was cut in the spring) that involved a different ritual on each of its 11 days. In addition to the new year, Atiku celebrated the mythical victory of the Babylonian sky god Marduk over the evil sea goddess Tiamat and served an important political purpose: It was during this time that a new king was crowned or that the current ruler’s divine mandate was symbolically renewed. “Throughout antiquity, civilizations around the world developed increasingly sophisticated calendars, typically pinning the first day of the year to an agricultural or astronomical event. In Egypt, for instance, the year began with the annual flooding of the Nile, which coincided with the rising of the star Sirius. The first day of the Chinese new year, meanwhile,

EDITOR’S Opinion Jackie Devereaux

occurred with the second new moon after the winter solstice. “The early Roman calendar consisted of 10 months and 304 days, with each new year beginning at the vernal equinox; according to tradition, it was created by Romulus, the founder of Rome, in the eighth century B.C. A later king, Numa Pompilius, is credited with adding the months of Januarius and Februarius. Over the centuries, the calendar fell out of sync with the sun, and in 46 B.C. the emperor Julius Caesar decided to solve the problem by consulting with the most prominent astronomers and mathematicians of his time. He introduced the Julian calendar, which closely resembles the more modern Gregorian calendar that most countries around the world use today. “As part of his reform, Caesar instituted January 1 as the first day of the year, partly to honor the month’s namesake: Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, whose two faces allowed him to look back into the past and forward into the future. Romans celebrated by offering sacrifices to Janus, exchanging

gifts with one another, decorating their homes with laurel branches and attending raucous parties. In medieval Europe, Christian leaders temporarily replaced January 1 as the first of the year with days carrying more religious significance, such as December 25 (the anniversary of Jesus’ birth) and March 25 (the Feast of the Annunciation); Pope Gregory XIII reestablished January 1 as New Year’s Day in 1582. “In many countries, New Year’s celebrations begin on the evening of December 31—New Year’s Eve—and continue into the early hours of January 1. Revelers often enjoy meals and snacks thought to bestow good luck for the coming year. In Spain and several other Spanish-speaking countries, people bolt down a dozen grapes-symbolizing their hopes for the months ahead-right before midnight. In many parts of the world, traditional New Year’s dishes feature legumes, which are thought

is said that whoever finds the nut can expect 12 months of good fortune. “Other customs that are common worldwide include watching fireworks and singing songs to welcome the new year, including the ever-popular “Auld Lang Syne,” which native to its Scot descent means ‘long ago or days gone by,’ in many English-speaking countries. The practice of making resolutions for the new year is thought to have first caught on among the ancient Babylonians, who made promises in order to earn the favor of the gods and start the year off on the right foot. (They would reportedly vow to pay off debts and return borrowed farm equipment.) “In the United States, the most iconic New Year’s tradition is the dropping of a giant ball in New York City’s Times Square at the stroke of midnight. Millions of people around the world watch the event, which has taken place

Cartoon courtesy of Shelli Pruett to resemble coins and herald future financial success; examples include lentils in Italy and black-eyed peas in the southern United States. Because pigs represent progress and prosperity in some cultures, pork appears on the New Year’s Eve table in Cuba, Austria, Hungary, Portugal and other countries. Ring-shaped cakes and pastries, a sign that the year has come full circle, round out the feast in the Netherlands, Mexico, Greece and elsewhere. In Sweden and Norway, meanwhile, rice pudding with an almond hidden inside is served on New Year’s Eve; it

almost every year since 1907. Over time, the ball itself has ballooned from a 700-pound iron-and-wood orb to a brightly patterned sphere 12 feet in diameter and weighing in at nearly 12,000 pounds. Various towns and cities across America have developed their own versions of the Times Square ritual, organizing public drops of items ranging from pickles (Dillsburg, Pennsylvania) to possums (Tallapoosa, Georgia) at midnight on New Year’s Eve.” May 2013 be the best year yet for you all!

STARBusiness & Finance Being Rich Doesn’t Mean It’s Ok To Be

R-u-d-e There is a distinguishable and obvious difference though between well intentioned advice and un-necessary rudeness. All too often, money has a tendency to change people in ways that are less than ideal, especially if they have mega millions of dollars and have been rich for so long they’ve forgotten their Ramen noodle days. Most of us have heard growing up that money is the root of all evil. However, the Bible says “for the love of money is the root of all evil”. That love of cash frequently turns a person into an egotistic individual. Money is a great tool. A person of wealth can help a lot of others who lack money. Elvis Presley is remembered as the King of Rockn’ Roll. But Elvis was also a great philanthropist. It has been documented that Elvis gave away forty or so homes, 600 – 700 new cars, thousands of pieces of jewelry, and millions of dollars in his short lifetime. At one point, Elvis was the largest individual taxpayer in the United States. Elvis’ generosity and joy of giving knew no limits. His giving followed the laws of

I was watching TV a few nights ago and came across a show called ‘Shark Tank’. The premise of the series is that there are five mega wealthy and successful people (“sharks”) who sit on a panel while listening to pitches from entrepreneurs who are trying to raise money for their projects. The entrepreneurs bring samples of their products, give a history of themselves and the financials of their business, give demonstrations in some cases using their product or invention, and then wait to see if one or more of the sharks will make an investment into the entrepreneurs company. And that is where the show takes a sometimes ugly turn. The sharks behave all too often like school yard bullies just because they have vast amounts of dollars. More often than not they make jokes of the entrepreneur’s product, offer a small investment amount for a large percentage of the entrepreneur’s company, and then belittle the entrepreneur for taking too much time to accept or reject the sharks offer. Now don’t get me wrong. Being in business is not for the faint hearted. Anyone thinking of starting their own company should first take a class on rejection and set backs. For every literal “overnight success”, there are a 1000 other business owners that fought one battle after another for years before finally seeing the fruits of their labor in a very meaningful way. Anyone that is brave enough to step into the spotlight on a national TV show in an attempt to raise operating capital for their dream should rightly expect some constructive criticism.

the Bible as a prosperous man. I’ve seen a couple of other series on TV that took an entirely different approach to showcasing wealthy individuals. One was called ‘Undercover Boss’ and the other was titled ‘Secret Millionaire’. In the case of the former, the President or CEO of a corporation would disguise himself and work along his company’s regular workers without their knowledge of who their work mate was in real life. This would go on for 5 days. At the end of the work week, the business owner would head back to his corporate office and then invite the unsuspecting workers into his office for a meeting. It was then the employees learned that their co-worker was also their boss. The boss would then compliment his employees for the great effort they put forward for the company. Seldom was their a show that didn’t leave you misty eyed at the end. Secret Millionaire had its own positive formula for TV success and left the viewers with that warm fuzzy feeling as well. Being rich, kind hearted, inspiring, and genuinely caring for those less fortunate is the lifestyle all wealthy people should strive to lead. Being rich, rude, cynical, bitter, speaking towards others with a wicked tongue, looking down on the less fortunate, and generally mocking the “little people” of the world, is a lifestyle I personally can’t tolerate from someone who worries not of financial hardship. As someone once said, “It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice”. Those wouldn’t be funny if there Does anyone have Oliver Stone’s e-mail or phone number? wasn’t so much truth in them.

Investment Know-How

Can’t We Just Throw Congress Off the Fiscal Cliff? There are rumblings in Congress that Republicans want to postpone the mandatory spending cuts and tax hikes for 90 days. Democrats want to delay implementing the law of our land by as much as two years. Don’t forget that the Fiscal Cliff came about from these same politicians inability to get a similar deal done in July & August of 2011. Congress finally came to an agreement less than an hour before the government was to have shut down. The compromise was voted on and then it was signed into law by President Obama on August 15, 2011. So the Fiscal Cliff isn’t something foreign to our elected leaders. It’s their solution from fifteen months ago. Remember the “Super Committee?” They were convened shortly after the bill was signed into law to solve these same issues by the end of 2011 or $1.2 trillion in acrossthe-board cuts would be locked in. They were unable to come to an agreement. Why you ask? It was made up entirely of current politicians who were set on making sure their respective political parties didn’t give an inch. At least they accomplished one goal.

I think we need to investigate one further part of this fiasco and that’s the conspiracy aspect of it all. Think about it for a minute. What risk did our politicians take by letting us go over the Fiscal Cliff? Sadly, there was very little. We re-elected nearly 85% of the incumbents from the last election after they put us in this mess. The real risk to politicians was to avert the Fiscal Cliff. That would have meant raising taxes on most all of US. That would have meant cutting future entitlements to nearly every family in the United States. That would have meant a little pain for everyone. But that’s what it is going to take to prevent the US from becoming the next Greece, Italy, Ireland, Spain . . . well you get the picture. These problems are real. If we don’t fix them soon, the greatest country in history could be asking for a bailout when there’s not enough money in the world to do it. Being raised in the south, there are many things you never forget. One is “You can’t fix stupid.” Kevin Powell has been a financial adviser for more than 25 years and can be reached at kpplanner1@aol. com.

“Beg, Borrow and Steal”

It’s hardly the crime of the century; it may not even be a crime at all. But, for the 58 artists whose works have been chosen by the Palm Springs Art Museum and the Rubell Family Collection/ Contemporary Arts Foundation of Miami, the title of the exhibition provides an insight into their artistic inspirations. The exhibition is entitled “Beg, Borrow and Steal” a title taken from a quote attributed to Picasso who once opined, “Good artists borrow, great artists steal.” Organized in 2009 as an immense annual installation to coincide with the colorful international art scene surrounding the hugely popular Art Basel art festival in Miami, the Beg, Borrow and Steal theme resulted from a series of conversations the Rubells had with artists Kelly Walker and Wade Guyton. The frequently collaborative duo noted the generosity of some artists in the nature of their work and further described how Andy Warhol, Marcell Duchamp and Richard Prince opened doors for younger artists like themselves to walk through. Beg, Borrow and Steal is the first exhibition to be installed simultaneously at the Palm Springs Art Museum in downtown Palm Springs and the Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm

Desert in The Galen Building. Given the enormity of the original installation, which was made up entirely of works from the Rubells’ permanent collection, the exhibition has been shaved a bit from the 78 artists originally represented and now includes paintings, sculpture, photographs and videos from 58 artists, with an emphasis on those working on the west coast and particularly in Los Angeles. The exhibition presents the opportunity for a visual dialogue among internationally recognized older

The Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert is an 8,400 square feet Silver LEEDcertified building in Palm Desert – appropriately named the Galen Building in honor of local philanthropist and museum patron, Helene Galen. The Galen Building will house changing exhibitions and collections and is surrounded by the four-acre Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden featuring more than 10 significant works of sculpture. Both museum locations are open to the public, with free admission every Thursday from 4-8 p.m. In addition, the Palm Springs museum facility offers free admission and programming the second Sunday of each month. Steve Chase Awards Gala

Behind every good dancer there is another good dancer. No, I don’t mean your partner who – hopefully - stands ready to pick you up when you fall; I mean the choreographer whose job it is to keep you from falling on your face in the first place. The importance of choreography and a world renowned choreographer will be featured at the 19th Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards when one of the headliners will be Ray Leeper, the choreographer for seasons 8 and 9 of “So You Think You Can Dance.” And, to demonstrate how choreography is a critical part of dance, Leeper will bring along two of his star pupils: Chehon, Season 8’s winner and Marko, a So You Think You Can Dance all-star. The entertainment doesn’t stop with dancing. Melissa Etheridge has been already announced as a performer at the gala, along with Broadway and musical theater stars Stephnie J. Block, who played

Natalie Cole performs

“Unforgettable”

Natalie Cole

Story and Photos by Pat Krause

Grammy Award winner, Natalie Cole, the daughter of famous Nat King Cole, performed her final concert of the year at THE SHOW at Agua Caliente Resort Spa in Rancho Mirage on Dec. 28. The Theatre holds over 2,000 seats and it was nearly full of Natalie Cole Fans. Cole started her concert with “Fever” which brought a response from a member of the audience saying “I love you Natalie.” She came back with “I love you too.” She then wished the audience a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. She sang with a seven-piece band and

two backup singers which included two drummers. Some of her songs were “Nice N Easy,” “Love On My Mind,” “The Very Thought of You,” “Here’s to Life,” “This Will Be,” “Smile” and even, “The Christmas Song,” to celebrate the season. Natalie sang “Unforgettable” with her late father Nat King Cole as he appeared on a video screen. It was such a nostalgic moment. She has this soft sexy style to her voice. She sang, pop, rock, Jazz, Love songs and ballads for all to enjoy with her own style to each of her songs. Upcoming events at THE SHOW include Men of Soul, Lea Solanga, Alabama and Sylvia Browne.

sitka, alaska

Sounding like steam escaping from a leaky pipe, the killer whales announced their presence with a vertical spray of water forced through their blowholes. Then the Orcas’ massive black and white cylindrical shapes rose in graceful arcs from the frigid waters along Alaska’s southern coastline before, tail high, they sunk back beneath the surface only to reappear, heading in a different direction. Our small, twin-hulled whale-watching boat bobbed gently in the slate-colored ocean, the engine turned off so as not to disturb the several pods of feeding whales nearby, providing us with an up-close glimpse of these remarkable creatures. It was an unforgettable experience and just one of the many to come as we sailed Alaska’s Inland Passage aboard the M/S Silver Shadow, one of the half-dozen, uncommonly luxurious six-star vessels that make up the Silversea fleet, a multiple winner of the coveted title: World’s Best Small Ship Cruise Line. Don’t get me wrong, the Desert is still paradise, but when daily temperatures are stuck in the triple-teens, we head for more amenable climes. Europe is overdone and over-priced, making our decision to tour Alaska, as seen from our seagoing veranda and visits to historic ports-of-call, a no-brainer. A day and a half’s sail north from Vancouver, Canada, our first port of call was Sitka, the first capital of the Alaska Territory. Like all the Alaskan towns visited, Sitka is built on a strip of coastal land, surrounded by evergreen-treed mountains and cathedral-like granite peaks, some still bearing remnants of last winter’s snow. But, don’t be fooled by the diminutive size of its four-square-block downtown; the City of Sitka boasts that it encompasses almost 3,000 square miles, making it North America’s largest municipality in geographic area. And, don’t be fooled by the relative small size of the ships of Silversea either. No ship, regardless of size has more luxurious accommodations or amenities. It’s just that on the 28,000-ton Silver Shadow the public rooms are on a smaller scale, reminiscent of an exclusive country club that just happens to float.

those whose appetites are not regulated by the clock, 24hour room service is available - featuring your choice of items, no fixed menu need be followed. And drinks, whether from your always-stocked insuite refrigerator, the various bars around the ship, or in the restaurants, are complimentary. But to me, the most remarkable amenity aboard the Silver Shadow is its crew, and the ultra-high levels of service and attention provided by the ship’s staff made even more astonishing when you realize that they are done without the expectation of an end-of-

voyage gratuity, for tipping is built into the price of your very competitive Silversea cruise. Good or bad, it is the crew that makes for a memorable voyage and, beginning with its Master, Captain Ignazio Tatulli –- an aspiring artist before heeding the siren call of the sea -- the Silver Shadow’s staff is indicative of the rest of the fleet’s. There was David Lawton, incomparable Cruise Director and on-board impresario, whose talent and humor transcend the stage. Lawton left his native Wales, (just saying the name of his multisyllabic village consumes nearly half the time allotted for his act), and honed his Welsh baritone and natural sense of humor on the make-do stages of British workingmen’s clubs. The result is a singeractor-comedian who, after making his mark on stage and television on two continents, is now, literally, sharing his talents with the world. The youngest executive chef in the Silversea fleet, Ricardo Dotti, oversees a kitchen staff of 43 aboard the Shadow, a relatively easy task when you consider that prior to joining the cruise line this one-time economics student cooked for Silvio Berlusconi, former Prime Minister of Italy, and for A.C. Milan, a Premiere League soccer team owned by billionaire Berlusconi.

Can you trust your Tour Manager? You can if he’s Clive Jellicoe. The longest-serving Silversea Tour Manager and program manager for numerous

Olympiads and world-class sporting events as well, Jellicoe does not promote tours, he offers once-in-a-lifetime experiences and he will not hesitate to dissuade you from a contemplated shore excursion if he knows of another one more suited to your interests. And then there are the service and housekeeping staffs. These men and woman are away from their families and loved ones for long months on end, with Skype or a ship-to-shore telephone call their only contact with home. Remember, they don’t expect a gratuity, yet they always greet you by name and with a smile that reflects their passion to enhance your day aboard Silversea. The vessels of Silversea cater to the cosmopolitan world traveler, and a cruise aboard any one of these smaller, more intimate vessels is an enriching voyage that stretches beyond expectations.

You might be interested if you like: Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Jamey’s Johnson’s “The Guitar Song.” Tell me more: When word circulated that singer-songwriterguitarist Jamey Johnson was working on a full-length tribute to legendary songwriter Hank Cochran (who died at age 74 in 2010), it didn’t take long before several generations of country music stars eagerly joined in to assist with the project. In addition to the gifted Johnson (whose own two-disc “The Guitar Song” was one of the best releases of 2010),

Before we shut the door on 2012 completely, it seemed like a good idea to take a look back at some of the best country and Americana collections of the year that didn’t get all the attention they deserved.

Artist: Dwight Yoakam Title: 3 Pears (Warner Music Nashville)

You might be interested if you like: Buck Owens, Flying Burrito Brothers, Michael and the Lonesome Playboys. Tell me more: Singersongwriter Dwight Yoakam’s “3 Pears” marks the Grammy Award winner’s first new studio disc of original music in seven years. Whether singing ballads (“It’s Never Alright,” “Long Way To Go”), midtempo honky tonk chestnuts (“Nothing But Love”) or uptempo stuff (“Dim Lights, Thick Smoke”), the 12 songs here are among the finest recordings of the his celebrated career. “A Heart Like Mine” recalls the intoxicating blend of melody and psychedelic swirl of The Beatles’ latter work, while “Long Way To Go” boasts the authentic Bakersfield country sounds aptly suited for Yoakam’s inviting twangy vocals. Good news for fans of the Kentucky native; he will be appearing at the Stagecoach Festival in Indio on Saturday, April 27. The Nashville-based trio (Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood) perform hits such as “American Honey,” “I Run To You,” “We Owned the Night” and “Just a Kiss.” In addition to the filmed 90-minute concert which looks and sounds great, the release features bonus features including behind-thescenes interviews that provides additional insight into the group. Eastwood’s

‘Trouble With the Curve’ In his latest film, “Trouble With the Curve,” Clint Eastwood is Gus Lobel, a top baseball scout whose career may be coming to an end. He has been successful for decades, but lately the Atlanta Braves’ front office is starting to question his judgment, feeling he is too old and too old school to handle the rigors of the job. Fortunately Gus has a strong ally in his long time friend played by John Goodman who defends him. He insists that there is no one better at the job than Gus, but he too is having some reservations. Not about his pal’s ability, but about his health since Gus is having trouble with his eyesight. Gus is not willing to retire, but the young guns in the head office feel he is no longer relevant. They rely on computers and statistics, while Gus relies on gut instincts and interaction with the players he is scouting. A worried Goodman calls on Clint’s estranged daughter Mickey (Amy Adams) to accompany her father on his upcoming trip. She reluctantly joins her dad even though he doesn’t want her help. The timing is also really bad for Mickey. She is a top attorney who is up for a partnership in her firm and being away from her job at this time could jeopardize her promotion.

Eastwood is, as always, great as a curmudgeon who can say a lot with a curl of his lip or his signature growl when things are not going his way. He also can reveal a soft side which he tries to keep to himself rather than share. He loves his daughter and is proud of her intellect but he has a hard time expressing his true feelings. As they spend more time together she tries to find out why he is so distant. In fact she seems to enjoy being a scout more than her legal accomplishments and she asks Gus why he stopped taking her with him on scouting trips. After her mother died he used to take her with him all the time, then suddenly it ended and he sent her to live with an aunt. Why? Deep inside she has felt rejected ever since because those trips were the happiest times of her life. She tells him she misses the closeness they once shared and she misses the fun of being an active part of baseball and scouting with him. Gus and Mickey are both bright proud and feisty and their clashes eventually allow each of them to express their true feelings. The film gets off to a rather slow start, but eventually it heats us when father and daughter are reunited on their road trips to understanding. Clint is, as usual,

Award include Amy Adams and Jessica Chastain. Both actresses received Academy Award nominations for their respective years of being presented with this award. Hunt co-stars in Fox Searchlight Pictures’ The Sessions, based on the poignantly optimistic autobiographical writings of California–based journalist and poet Mark O’Brien. The Sessions tells the story of a man who lived most of his life in an iron lung who is determined – at age 38 – to lose his virginity. With the help of his therapist and the guidance of his priest, he sets out to make his dream a reality. John Hawkes and William H. Macy also star in a film written for the screen and directed by Ben Levin. The Sessions will be released wide on Friday, November 16. Helen Hunt has enjoyed a diverse career not only as an awardwinning actress, but more recently as an accomplished writer, director and producer. Hunt attended the

Palm Springs International Film Festival in 2008 for the Opening Night screening of her film Then She Found Me, which she co-wrote, produced and directed. The film won the Best Narrative Feature Award at the Festival. Her other film credits include Soul Surfer, Bobby, As Good As It Gets, What Women Want, Castaway, A Good Woman, Robert Altman’s Dr. T and the Women, Pay It Forward and Twister. She most recently completed work on Steven Bernstein’s Decoding Annie Parker with Samantha Morton. Some of Hunt’s television work includes “Mad About You” and the critically acclaimed HBO Miniseries “Empire Falls.” For her role as Jamie Buchman in “Mad About You,” Hunt garnered four Emmy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards (three as lead actress and one as Producer for Best Comedy), and a Screen Actors Guild Award. She also won the Best Actress Award at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild and the Oscars for her role in the film As Good As It Gets.

very good at being gruff and distant as well as caring. Add to the mix, Justin Timberlake who stars as a rival scout with his sights set on an announcing career and his eyes on Mickey. He also shares a past with Gus. What makes the film engrossing is its focus on what is really important. Often life can throw you a curve, but if you know what really matters you can hit doubts right out of the park.

Spotlight Award at PSIFF Gala talents are myriad. From her awardwinning portrayal of Jamie on ‘Mad About You,’ an iconic character that helped to define a generation, to her work on Then She Found Me, which was honored at the 2008 Palm Springs International Film Festival, Hunt has demonstrated that the sky’s the limit when it comes to her talents. In her latest film, The Sessions, Hunt gives a bravura performance as a therapist with a most delicate taskto help a man who has spent his life in an iron lung achieve a most unusual wish- lose his virginity. LA QUINTA, CA – Four-time major championship winner Phil Mickelson announced this month his commitment to play in the Humana Challenge in partnership with the William J. Clinton Foundation, the PGA TOUR golf tournament at PGA WEST’s Palmer and Nicklaus Private Courses and La Quinta Country Club from Jan. 14-20, 2013.

Challenge. Mickelson is one of seven players to have won the tournament multiple times, with both of his victories coming in playoffs. His four-shot rally during the final round in 2002 is tied for the second-biggest comeback in event history and was his 20th PGA TOUR win. Mickelson’s 37 birdies over 90 holes in 2004 is tied for the tournament record.

Newly inducted Hall of Famer, Phil Mickelson Humana Challenge. Ranked No. 9 in the world and coming off his best finish in the event (T8 in 2012), Snedeker is the second reigning FedExCup champion to return to the event, following in the footsteps of 2011 FedExCup winner and 2010 event winner Bill Haas.

“Southern California native, 40-time PGA TOUR winner and four-time major champion is the Humana Challenge’s all-time leading money-winner.” Newly inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in May and ranked No. 15 in the world, Mickelson won the Humana Challenge in 2002 and 2004, and he is the event’s all-time leading money-winner, having amassed $2,043,681 in eight pro starts. He will begin his PGA TOUR season at the Humana Challenge for the second consecutive year. For the fourth consecutive year, the $5.6 million tournament will take place entirely within La Quinta, where players will compete for a $1.008 million winner’s check. The purse and winner’s check are tied for the largest in event history. Mickelson’s 40 PGA TOUR victories are the second most among active PGA TOUR golfers and include major championships at the 2004, 2006 and 2010 Masters and the 2005 PGA Championship. He also holds a prominent place in the history of the Humana

The Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation, the Birdies for the Brave, the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, Homes for Our Troops and Start Smart bear testament to the passion Mickelson has for giving back off the course. Mickelson joins defending FedExCup champion and 2012 U.S. Ryder Cup teammate Brandt Snedeker and 2012 Humana Challenge champion Mark Wilson as early commitments to the 2013

“Having Phil and Brandt on board already bodes well for the strength of our field again this year and provides further proof of the appeal of the event,” said Bob Marra, Humana Challenge executive director and CEO. “The legacy Phil has left on our event is undeniable, his popularity among our fans is remarkable and we could not be more pleased to have him start his season with us again. I am also proud to welcome back our defending champion, Mark Wilson, who has committed to the field. “Everybody gave it rave reviews afterward, how great it was to play, and I think you’re going to see more guys step up this year that haven’t played in the past and have a great time,” Snedeker said, referring to the 2012 Humana Challenge. “I think the field will grow every year. More guys will go out and play and see what it’s like. I think, year to year, it’s going

Healthy food and lifestyle choices are top of mind for many people. Adopting even one new behavior will help you stick to a healthier lifestyle. “Eating a quality plant-based diet a few times a week provides a wide variety of foods and nutrients the body needs for optimal function, and can also reduce your risk for developing chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes,” says registered dietitian Ashley Koff. “Many people worry that cutting meat from their diet will cut flavor and protein – both key for a satisfying meal. It’s fun for me to teach them that marinating organic tofu – a plant-based protein – with spices and oils delivers meatless meals that are full of flavor and protein.” Try incorporating these tips from Koff to help make healthier food choices yearround: • Be a qualitarian: Choose the best quality food available at every eating occasion – you are what you eat, and your body runs best on better-quality fuel. • Go all-natural: Make sure when you buy something that claims to be “all-natural,” it really is as marketed. Companies like Pulmuone Foods USA, Inc. make that easy through their eight all-natural principles, which exclude use of preservatives, artificial additives, MSG, hydrogenated oil and irradiated ingredients. • Get a nutrition upgrade: Whether eating animal or plant-based proteins, eat them in their whole food form – think cubed tofu as opposed to a bar or product with soy protein isolate. • Choose nutrient balance for optimal energy and results: Incorporating a balance of carbs, proteins and healthy fats, as opposed to just counting calories, gives your body a

Points of Light Within the Square

Friday (Jan. 11th) is the first new moon of 2013 (22 degrees Capricorn). The moon & Sun, joined by Mercury, offers a message to humanity. It’s time to learn how to create and build the new world government, future structures and the new culture and civilization. We receive this information through “impressions’ - patterns and symbols impressed upon our minds and hearts by our inner spiritual teachers. The impressions are quietly given, subtly impressed. As we begin a New Year, with the first new moon of the year, we’re asked to create a new rhythm (pattern, sequences of activities) for the New Year. Establishing a defining rhythm in our daily lives brings forth direction. The art and science of astrology follows heavenly rhythms - cyclic timings, patterned movements of the stars, planets, Sun and moon, which influence and guide all life on earth. We understand this especially through the seasons. This rhythm, when followed consciously affects our cellular structure, helps us create new habits and patterns that re-polarize the lower self upward, toward the higher self, moves us from desire to aspiration and guides us out of the maze of unknowing into a field of clear knowledge where “daylight” is found. We no longer walk in the dark. Participating in these rhythms, especially in a group, move us from inertia, to activity to harmony. Two statements are made to students in Mystery schools. Learn about the self (through astrology), and establish a rhythm in daily life. Rhythm creates a balanced and stable vibration. Rhythm is the Life (God) Principle. When we establish rhythm in our live, this Life begins to flow gently and naturally through us. It effects our environments and all we contact. We become the Radiant Light everyone seeks. We become the “points of light moving within the square.” We then change the rhythm of the world. ARIES: You will be communicating at a fast pace, possibly using many languages (symbols, graphs, power points). You will be an authority as well as providing information to authority, serving many directions at once. Things change rapidly. You need the extra challenge. People see you as skilled, energetic, fresh and new. Your next challenge will be to stabilize all you initiated. TAURUS: Problems presenting themselves will be quickly understood. You will inspire others to further research, study and learning. You realize how important knowledgeable information is

needed by humanity and how well researched fact and information affect people’s lives and well-being. You see and understand the larger picture while offering practical advice. People’s lives change as a result. GEMINI: Though no one can tell what you’re really thinking, your mind is interested in what makes people say and do things, what secrets support their choices, what mysteries make up their psychology. This isn’t what you think all the time. But now it is. Entering in a phase of research you may study finances, philosophy, spiritual journeys,

healing and herbs. Explain your purposes when communicating with others. Understanding is needed and clarity CANCER: Ask questions and listen to others’ answers carefully. This will help you comprehend your own thinking so conclusions and decisions will be easier. Don’t play devil’s advocate. Share all new information, ideas, experiments and studies. Try not to overanalyze. Only provide new perspectives. Know that silence will bring forth many impressions and revelations. Look for them. LEO: You will remember all information and details that everyone else has forgotten. You will become the “messenger” in your daily life. Is there something about the animal kingdom we need to know or that needs tending? You will consider what you true service is to the world. You want to feel useful. Careful with health. To support adrenals take the tincture Eleuthero (Siberian ginseng) by HerbPharm. It adapts to your needs. VIRGO: The art of creativity keeps has called to you this past year. Now the art of playfulness is added - play that allows your intelligence to shine. Play that includes magic. Play with words that entertains and teaches. If a parent, be sure to recognize your children’s abilities and gifts. Think about becoming a teacher. You have the gift. LIBRA: You always keep current with the present day news, especially things of culture, theatre and the arts. You like to exchange ideas, gossip a bit and titillate the minds of others. Now it’s important to train your eye on home. Focus on

what resources are needed to make it more harmonious, colorful, well designed and beautiful. Like an Ashram. Share what you know. You could be an interior designer. SCORPIO: You will be very practical, using your intelligence to understand what obstacles stand in the way of manifesting needs and wishes into your life and the life of many others. You take your time with decisions, focusing your mind on essentials. You are seeking the comfort of solitude so decisions are clear and precise. You are serious these days. In search of the Angel of the Presence. SAGITTARIUS: When we look at you we will see Mercury, the swift footed one, wings on his shoulders, feet and cap on his head. You will act like Mercury – restless, changeable, distracted, versatile, agile. You will talk like Mercury with mischievousness, quickness and trickery, all in fun. You will be like Mercury – alert, precocious, interesting and curious. At time you will be tired and cry. CAPRICORN: You will begin to develop a trust in yourself that you have great gifted abilities that include many endeavors. Especially the arts. Capricorns have secret abilities no one knows about. Only when called forth can the gifts be seen. You will be extra sensitive. Symbols and paradoxes will surround you. Use your imagination to more fully articulate what you want to create. Have a journal of ideas. AQUARIUS: You begin to question who you can trust. You can be discrete and confidential. Who in your life also possesses these traits? You think and analyze complex matters and finally realize that by posing a question to your mind, your intuition answers it unexpectedly. You learn best seeing things visually, symbolically & through sound - the Aquarian way of learning. PISCES: You seek people who are intelligent and curious, quite like you. You need interactions that involve community building and community affairs. You study and hear the trends of the times. You’re shocked with unfair play, manipulations, dishonesty. You come from another planet. We don’t know which one yet. But it’s dreamy, intelligent and good. Taking Control of Your Health & Wellness From Barely Surviving to Thriving

By Jackie Devereaux

DESERT HOT SPRINGS – If you’re sick and tired of feeling sick and tired, than you need to meet Barbara Kinsey, a clinical nutritionist and detoxification specialist at Thrive...health by design. Kinsey practices Quantum Reflex Analysis to accurately diagnose and then offer treatments specific to each individual body. Kinsey does not believe that one treatment fits all and her clients drive from as far as San Diego and Los Angeles to receive her health and wellness treatments which cost between $125 for a 90-minute detox and cleanse to a full six-hour cleanse for $525. Her Optimun Wellness Xtreme Miracle Cleanse includes an advanced immune treatment, deep cell detoxification, laser light therapy, hot mineral soaks, infrared thermal and sauna therapies, power drinks, pure body cocktails and nutritional supplements.

Barely Surviving

The reason Kinsey is able to help so many seriously ill people is because she knows what feeling sick and tired is all about. Her personal journey to health and wellness started when she was 27 years old suffering with a body that was falling apart and in constant pain. “I grew up eating lots of fried foods, meats, drinking a lot of sodas and eating a lot of refined sugars. At 27, both my knees were painfully swollen and I could not work. I had mytrovalve prolapse arrhythmia, bronchial and cardiac problems. I had Bell’s Palsy where half my face could not smile,” Kinsey confessed. “I looked like an old, sick woman at 27! I went to numerous doctors but nothing they did worked, and some made me worse. I prayed to God to show me what to do, and he did.” Kinsey found enlightenment in a garbage dumpster where she rescued two books – one on Detoxification and the other on Nutrition. She read them both like a bible and started changing her life. “I had no idea about nutrition – I was ignorant. I only had $20 left to

feed two people and a dog for one week. Doctors could not help me and I was desperate.” Kinsey made that $20 stretch by eating less meat and less protein, and eliminated fried foods, sodas, coffee and her favorite chocolate from her diet “I also had fibroid cystic breasts and like everyone, I didn’t want to change until I had to.” Kinsey believes everyone has a “body reserve” much like a bank account. Each person has a different amount of this or that in their bodies, and we’re all wearing our reserves out daily. “We think we’re okay until out of the blue our account is in bankruptcy. Poor man or rich man we all have bodies that respond to diet and lifestyles. Some people think sugar doesn’t hurt them. You’re only living on reserves and they will wear out. For me it was sooner. At 27, I hit bottom.” That was 22 years ago and now at 49, Kinsey does not look her stated age. She appears much younger, trim, fit, energetic and free from her past ailments - no more painful swollen knees and ankles, and no more heart and lung problems. Kinsey’s work in health and wellness has reached mainstrean America. Recently, the Holman Group hired her to conduct health and wellness seminars for employees at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio. “There is a large Hispanic community that suffers from diabetes, and many people still smoke and have very poor diets. It’s all about attitude. Meat eaters are more aggressive and violent with emotions that somethings get out of control. “I’m not saying to be a vegetarian,” but people should eat meat once a week or once every two weeks and eat fish four to five times a week. “Eat wild caught fish from the deep sea, New Zealand or Alaska that are free of hormones and toxins. Do not eat farm-raised fish,” she said. “Eat lots of green leafy vegetables, just like mom use to say. We focus on the body’s natural self healing ability. Our main objective is guiding, educating and helping individuals to achieve a higher level of health by using proven successful, natural healing modalities and therapies. “We have had some amazing immediate results even for people with kidney, liver and gall bladder failure,” she said. If you want to take control of your health and wellness, contact Kinsey at thrive.healthbydesign@ gmail.com or call 760-2882079. Visit her website www. thrivehealthbydesign.com for more information.

2013 Chevy Malibu ‘Eco’

A New Breed of “Mild Hybrids” Since the Great GM Meltdown, I’ve been watching for evidence that the passion for cars has returned to GM and its brands, especially Chevrolet. The all-new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco, along with other home-run hits for Chevrolet recently, makes a strong case that these cars are genuine Chevrolet - and have the right to wear the Chevrolet Bowtie. This new “Eco” is a strong contender in the midsize sedan segment. It’s also the first of a new breed of “mild hybrids” for 2013 - cars that have some of the mechanical benefits of a full hybrid to increase fuel economy, but lower sticker prices than a full-fledged hybrid. It gets a respectable 37-mpg - enabling a range of 580 miles with a full tank. Chevrolet needs this car to be a sales winner - it’s their first global midsize sedan and will be sold in nearly 100 countries on six continents. Pricing starts at $25,995, including a $760 destination charge.

The exterior of the Eco - and all Malibu models - has a coupelike silhouette and carries design cues from Camaro to bring a sporty sensibility to the family sedan segment. A wide stance, broad shoulders, a powerdome hood and an integrated rear spoiler bring a new athleticism to Malibu and give it a more aggressive, planted and sporty appearance. These design cues also include Chevrolet’s dual-port grille, large swept-back projector HID headlamps, larger Chevrolet bowtie badges front and rear, Camaro-style tail lamps and a single hidden exhaust outlet. The look is complemented by standard 17-inch alloy wheels and lowrolling-resistance Goodyear tires. The inside of this Chevy is allnew. It’s roomier, more comfortable and upscale (it could pass for a Buick), and is much quieter than the previous Malibu. It features an all-new dual cockpit design, and its three inches wider than the previous Malibu.

The interior features metallic, chrome or wood accents located around the shifter, surrounding the center stack, around the instrument cluster and on doors and the steering wheel. Soft, ice blue ambient lighting reflects off of and complements chrome accents and ensures even, consistent illumination along the instrument panel. Ice blue lighting on the center stack dials, exposed ice blue French contrast stitching, soft-touch and textured surfaces, and strategic applications of noise-deadening materials add to Malibu’s interior refinement. Seats are sport-sculpted and bolstered with firmer foam and frames made of high-strength steel for longdistance comfort and durability. Chevrolet’s new MyLink infotainment package and OnStar are standard on the Malibu Eco. They build on the safety and security of OnStar and seamlessly integrate online services like Pandora internet radio and Stitcher SmartRadio. MyLink integrates

wireless connectivity through Bluetooth to enable hands-free use of selected smart phone apps while the device remains safely stowed. Malibu Eco’s eAssist system is mated to an Ecotec 2.4L directinjection four-cylinder engine and next-generation six-speed automatic transmission. The 2.4L engine is efficient and lightweight, featuring dual-overhead cams, direct injection, continuously variable intake and exhaust timing and electronic throttle control, as well as a lightweight aluminum cylinder block and cylinder head. It is rated at an estimated 182-hp. Along with the Ecotec 2.4L and six-speed transmission, the eAssist system uses power stored in the air-cooled, lithium-

ion battery to provide needed electrical boost in various driving scenarios, optimizing engine

and transmission operation. An advanced 115V lithium-ion battery and 15-kW motor-generator unit help increase fuel economy through regenerative braking, using electricity instead of gasoline when stopped, and fuel-cut off during deceleration. All of this adds up to package that is very well put together. On the road, it drives much better than I expected - having been engineered to deliver ride and handling that are very good and on par with more expensive sports sedans. Rivals include Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and the Ford Fusion. For more information, see your local Chevrolet dealer or visit Chevrolet.com.

DCA Cancer Cure Discovered

My dog is going blind and my vet says she has cataracts.

-But You Can’t Have It !

Is there any thing other than surgery that I can do for her?

In two previous Living Longer columns in this newspaper, on May 18, 2009 and again on November 11, 2010, this column reported on a cancer cure being developed by researchers at the University of Alberta in Canada. This story has been updated on the internet by a Glen Beck Youtube video published on November 20, 2012 whose dramatic title I have borrowed for this week’s column , “DCA Cancer Cure Discovered – But You Can’t Have It !” It is a sad fact that this very promising development has not received the great attention it deserves from the major media in the United States because a significant part of this story is that the pharmaceutical industry does not see a way to profit from this discovery As television and radio host Glen Beck observed on November 16, 2012, “Cancer is the second leading cause of death in this country leaving almost half a million families without mothers, fathers and children. But I have some good news. A Canadian research team has come up with a cheap and simple drug called DCA that kills almost all lung, breast and brain cancer cells but not healthy cells.” However, in commenting on the failure of the pharmaceutical companies to research and promote DCA because it is already patented, Beck concluded, “Maybe capitalism needs to be reminded about the value of human lives.” As I reported in my previous columns, when the researchers at the University of Alberta in Canada first revealed in 2007 that a cheap and safe chemical with the name of Di-chloro-acetate (DCA) had been proven to cure many types of cancer in animals, thousands of deathly sick cancer patients rushed to the internet to purchase the miracle medicine that could possibly save their lives. The internet discussion forum then started by those users of DCA (www.thedcasite.com) has shown that people can be cured of

www.desertstarweekly.com

cancer in a few weeks of treatment and at a cost of less than $5 a day. However, although DCA, a small vinegar-like molecule, had already been prescribed by medical doctors for over 30 years as a cure for conditions in children called lactic acidosis, the U.S. government quickly said the use of DCA for healing cancer was illegal until expensive human trials were completed. Then, since DCA as an already existing medicine could not be patented, no pharmaceutical company offered to come up with

Mr. Life Extension Art Kunkin

the hundreds of thousands of dollars required for human trials. In reporting on the financial barriers to the use of DCA, New Scientist magazine and others then took on the unprecedented action of calling on the public to fund the required human studies. $800,000 was raised for an initial study of DCA on 50 people with brain tumors. This study has been completed and DCA has proven very successful in destroying cancer cells. DCA accomplishes its magic of killing cancer cells by a very simple process. All living cells normally get their supply of energy from a chemical called ATP (AdenosineTri-Phosphate) produced by tiny structures in the living cell called mitochondria. These organelles also limit the life span and growth of the ordinary cell. However, cancer cells shut down the mitochondria and then get their energy from another source, glucose sugar. This results in the cancer cells becoming virtually

immortal, forming large tumors and harmfully migrating throughout the human body. Until recently, it was believed that the cancer cells had completely killed the mitochondria. However, studies have shown that DCA does its magic by reviving the mitochondria previously believed dead. Then the mitochondria start producing ATP again and the cancer cells die, no longer having the sugar they need for their life and abnormal growth. If you want more information about the positive experiences of cancer patients with DCA, please look at www.thedcasite.com. Even the articles observing that more research on DCA must be done are accompanied by letters from readers testifying that the compound is a magic bullet against cancer. You can also email me at artkunkin@ gmail.com for a pdf computer file of the original New Scientist article detailing the anti-cancer action of DCA. If you do email me for this, please put “New Scientist” in the subject line.

The most common cause of blindness in our ageing canine population, like us humans, is the progression of cataracts. Early cataracts cause the lens to become cloudy, which begins to blur vision. It’s a bit like constantly looking through a pane of frosted glass. As the cataract progresses, shutting out more and more light, the pupil begins to show a snow-white opaqueness. Conventional treatment has been to surgically remove the damaged lens – a costly procedure with an acceptable rate of post-op complications. Now, there may be a safe, low cost alternative in the form of simple eye drops. The most significant research in this field has been spearheaded by Dr. Mark Babizhayev, based at the Moscow Helmholtz Research Institute of Eye Diseases. It has been discoveredthat the healthy eye contains high levels of the natural antioxidant carnosine (a small molecule composed of two amino acids). Carnosine is important for preventing glycosylation (oxidation of proteins by glucose). Glycosylation - a common problem for diabetics - causes cell damage in many tissues, including the lens of the eye. The breakthrough came when researchers found that the N-acetylated form of the carnosine molecule (known as N-acetylcarnosine)could be absorbed and utilized by ocular tissue to replace depleted stores of carnosine – a crucial antioxidant also found in skeletal muscle, heart muscle, nerve tissue and the brain. N-acetylcarnosine (Can-C™) eye drops have been researched in humans and in animals for over ten years. Surprisingly both dogs and rabbits responded better than their human lab rats! In fact, in one clinical trial, 96% of the dogs (subjects included both immature and mature cataracts) showed notable improvement in vision. The behavior of your pet is the best indicator for you to determine how well the drops are working. With the return of sight

and improved ability to navigate their surroundings – overall improvement in temperament and behavior should follow. Positive findingsare generally noted within the first 2-3 months afterapplying drops 2 – 4 times daily. Optimal results areachieved with 6 - 12 months. At the end of 6 months, you may want to consult with your veterinarian to determine if it is time to go to the maintenance dose of 1 drop daily or to continue longer with the reversal dose. When medical science can be applied to find natural remedies that work with the body to help it heal by its own natural methods, that is a drug-free and nonsurgical win-win for the patient! In my practice, drugs and surgical procedures are offered when there

is no reasonable alternative. Important Note: a specific purity level of N-acetylcarnosineensures both safety and optimal results. This purity level is highly proprietary and trademarked asNacetylcarnosine (Can-C™). STARetc… sentinel plant

continued from 1 Competitive Power Ventures Holdings, LLC (CPV) is a leading North American electric power generation development and asset management company headquartered in Silver Spring, Maryland, with offices in Braintree, Massachusetts, San Francisco, California, and Toronto, Canada. CPV has three divisions; asset management, renewable energy and natural gas. Peter Galbraith Kelly, Jr., Sr. VP of External Affairs says “a third of the company’s focus is in renewable energy, but without a backstop (Sentinel Energy Plant), there would be a 60% loss of energy during a cloud storm or if the wind was not blowing.” According to Kelly, there are not technologies in place to do away with fossil fuels completely, but he looks forward to the day that those technologies are available. CPV Sentinel Energy project is not currently online, but is in the testing phase of the turbines. CPV Sentinel will be commissioning services at the end of summer 2013, only as the peak of the cooling system is at the brink of blackout. The plant will then come online and relieve the demand for energy and stop a possible energy crisis. CPV Sentinel will operate only during periods of peak demand for electricity, 15 percent to 30 percent of the year, to protect against blackouts

and stabilize the overall power grid system. CPV Sentinel will generate 800 MW of power, enough power to protect the entire Coachella Valley in time of crisis. In California we have increasing demands for new, cleaner, and more efficient electricity generation facilities. In response to these mandates, the California Public Utilities Commission has enabled Southern California Edison (SCE) to procure 3,200 megawatts (MW) of capacity by 2013 and to bring more power online as soon as practicable. Natural gas is the cleanest burning non-renewable energy source; Kelly assures that CPV has only the most advance systems and technologies in place at the Sentinel Energy project to ensure the community’s health and well-being, while providing a necessary source for energy. CPV wants to make certain that although a fossil fuel plant is necessary to meet the demands for energy that renewable energy cannot supply, it is operating at the highest standards in the industry and researching and developing new and innovative ways to generate 100% renewable energy. Today, CPV Sentinel is the only new power project with approved energy supply contracts to meet these energy needs. CPV Sentinel will also provide a major benefit to the Coachella Valley

water supply, specifically Desert Water Agency, at a time when we all need to focus on creative water plans. CPV Sentinel will purchase and import for recharging the groundwater sub basin up to twice the amount of water the power project will ever use. CPV Sentinel will fund projects to conserve potable water in the west end of the Coachella Valley with at least equal the amount of water which it uses. CPV Sentinel not only provides major water benefits, but it also produces $25 million in sales tax, $5 million in annual property tax, 350 new construction jobs with a $40 million payroll, 14 permanent jobs with a $1.3 million payroll and more than 380 indirect jobs during construction creating $15 million in payroll and $2.6 million in business taxes. CPV Sentinel is a proud sponsor of several charities including Food Now, Angel View, Family Services of the Desert, FIND Food Bank and Cabot’s Pueblo Museum. They participated and co-sponsored the December Chamber Mixer for the City of Desert Hot Springs, where unwrapped gifts were brought as a donation for the Christmas Tree Store. There have been several local charitable organizations that have benefited already from a company that has not yet come online.

Desert Hot Springs - On Sunday, January 6, 2013, Officer Jason Hunter of the Desert Hot Springs Police Department was conducting extra patrol of an area he had learned was seeing an increase in metal theft. Officer Hunter contacted a subject, Edward John Montoya as he stood next to a vehicle, in this area. During the officer’s investigation he noticed that a fire hydrant was missing from its mount. Officers checked the inside of the vehicle Montoya was standing next to and located a fire hydrant and a tool used to shut the water off. Montoya was arrested for Grand Theft and booked on the above charge. He was lodged at the Larry Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.

This week we decided to explore the use of pine trees in our sub-tropical desert environment. There are a number of pines that work here that will fit into a design palette that is drought tolerant. Western Garden Book describes pines as “the great individualists” of the garden, each species differing not only in its characteristics but also in the ways it responds to wind, heat and other growing conditions. It is not too difficult to identify the pines that work in the desert because there are only four common ones and four that are not easy to find from growers. Pines that do well and are easy to find are Pinushalpensis(Aleppo Pine), Pinuseldarica (eldarica or afghan pine), pinuscanariensis (Canary Island pine), Pinuspinea (Italian stone pine). Other pines that work but are not readily available are Pinusbrutia (Calabrian pine), Pinuspatula (jeletcoe pine) and Pinuspinaster (cluster pine). So how do you know what pine you have in your yard? Cone appearance is one identifying feature of these trees. Another is the number of needles in a bundle; most pines carry their long, slender needles in groups of two, three, or five. Needle length and tree form are the other ways to identify a pine tree.Seeds of all species attract birds. Pinushalpensis (Aleppo pine) is native to the Mediterranean region and grows moderately fast to 30-60 feet tall and 20-40 feet wide. The light green needles are 2 ½ inches to 4 inches long and are usually grouped in twos. The tree shows rugged character at 5 years; with age, an open irregular crown of many short, ascending branches is created. Reddish brown cones are 3 inches long, oval to oblong, stalked and bent backward. Takes poor soils, desert heat, seashore conditions but likes milder climates. In the Southwest, Aleppo blight can cause temporary dieback in the winter.

Pinuspinea (Italian pine) inches in size and reddish brown. This tree thrives in heat, wind and poor soil. Pinuspinea(Italian stone pine)is from southern Europe and Turkey. It grows moderately to 40-80 feet tall and 40-60 feet wide. In youth it grows as a stout and bushy globe; in middle life, the Italian stone pine develops a thick trunk topped with an “umbrella” of many branches. In maturity, the tree is broad and flat topped. Stiff needles are bright green to gray green, 5 – 8 Inches long, and held in groups of two. Cones are broadly oval, 4 – 6 inches long and glossy chestnut brown. While it tolerates our heat, you will also see it in beach gardens. Eventually it is too large for small gardens. This is the pine depicted in many Renaissance paintings and the source for edible seeds (pine nuts).
