If you’re not spending your principal, but instead using it to create perpetual income, you can live for 50 or more years in retirement. 9/11 families hit Obama for ‘siding’ with Saudi Arabia By Desert Star Staff President Barack Obama is facing increased pressure due to a renewed effort to make a secret Congressional report public that may describe links between Saudi Arabia and the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. Over the past week, families of 9/11 victims have criticized President Obama because of reports stating that his administration is lobbying Congress to block a bill that would allow terror victims to sue foreign governments connected to attacks on American soil. The criticism comes as Obama prepares to travel to Riyadh for the fourth time in his presidency. Saudi Arabia has threatened to sell some $750 billion in US assets if the bill passes, fearing it could leave the country vulnerable in US courts, the New York Times reported. Many relatives of 9/11 victims believe Riyadh played a role in the attacks, particularly since 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi citizens. Officially, the 9/11 Commission Report “found no evidence that the Saudi government as an institution or senior Saudi officials individually funded the organization.” However, a previous Congressional report, which the Commission followed up on, features 28 pages that more closely detail the hijackers’ sources of money and funding, and those documents have been kept classified for more than a decade. Families of 9/11 victims have tried to sue Saudi Arabia

The Obama administration has argued that stripping sovereign immunity from nations over terror attacks on the US would endanger Americans and spark similar legislation against the US. Relations between the US and Riyadh have already been strained by the Iranian nuclear deal and unflattering

Ariana Galindo, 19, is an activist with the Coalition for Human Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, which is also known as CHIRLA. She traveled to D.C. to rally with thousands of others on the steps of the Supreme Court in hopes of winning a reprieve for her parents, who came to the U.S. 25 years ago. “So, it would really really affect all of us, education wise and emotionally,” Galindo says. “It’s inhumane. Just because your parents are immigrants they take them away from you heartlessly and they separate you from the ones you love.” A 4-4 split on the high court would leave the anti-

California Considers Cutting Cord on Landline Service By Desert Star Staff California lawmakers are considering a bill to cut the cord on landline telephone service at a hearing today before the Assembly Utilities and Commerce Committee. Assembly Bill 2395 would permit AT&T to stop maintaining the copper-wire landline service in California in 2020, except in areas that have no alternative to cell phone or Voice Over Internet Protocol service. Josh Hart, a consumer advocate who founded a group to fight smart meters in homes, said landlines are a crucial part of the state’s infrastructure and are less

vulnerable than cell phones. “They depend on the electric grid, and when that goes down there’s no cell service,” he said. “So there needs to be robust, reliable high-quality landline service available as a choice for Californians.” AT&T said its cell and VOIP services are more advanced and cost less than landlines, and have estimated that only 15 percent of households in the state maintain a landline. Advocates say that still amounts to about 10 million Californians. Blanca Castro, manager for advocacy at AARP California, said her organization

opposes the replacement of publicly switched telephone networks because many people, especially seniors, can’t use cell phones or aren’t comfortable with the technology. “People’s landlines are their lifeline,” she said, “because of disability, not being able to read the numbers on a cell phone and needing to have big keyboards on landlines.” Last summer, the Federal Communications Commission passed a rule allowing phone companies to phase out landlines but required them to give homeowners and businesses three months’ and six months’ notice, respectively

300 arrested at Democracy Awakens protest against money in politics By Desert Star Staff About 300 arrests were made at the Democracy Awakens protest at the US Capitol, police confirmed. Officers made at least three warnings before detaining people, who are calling on Congress to get money out of politics and restore the Voting Rights Act. The latest protest comes after a week of Democracy Spring demonstrations on the Capitol steps. The demands of the two sets of rallies are very similar. Those who have been detained chose to be arrested.

Capitol police issued three warnings before beginning to round people up. The day began with a march from nearby Columbus Circle, in front of Union Station, to Capitol Hill. Unions support it, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, environmental groups and everyday Americans. Approximately 300 people were arrested, including NAACP President Cornell Brooks and Ben & Jerry’s co-founder Ben Cohen.

Democracy Protests in D.C. – The California Connection By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES - California has a long history of setting political trends, and actually gave birth to the massive eight-day Democracy Spring protests that are wrapping up in Washington D.C. today. Close to 1,000 people have been arrested during the sit-ins, where activists railed

against corruption and the influence of money in politics. Specifically, they denounce the 2010 Citizens United Supreme Court decision that declared that corporations have the same legal rights as people, which led to an explosion of super PACs and dark money. Democracy Spring

communications director, Peter James Callahan, says the movement started two years ago with a “March for Democracy” from L.A. to Sacramento. “After that, they had two weeks of nonviolent sit-ins at the California Capitol, which resulted in two out of their three bills being passed.” The March for Democracy protests convinced California legislators to call for a state constitutional convention to pass an amendment to

For Calif. Women of Color, Nothing to Celebrate on “Equal Pay Day” By Desert Star Staff SAN FRANCISCO - It’s Equal Pay Day, April 12, which means women have to work about 16 months to earn the same amount of money that men make in 12 months. A new report from the Congressional Joint Economic Committee, women in California make almost 16 percent less than men - which is better than the national average of 21 percent. Still, Noreen Farrell, executive director with the nonprofit Equal Rights Advocates in San Francisco, says the gender pay gap has stagnated for the past decade and for non-white

women, it has increased. “African American women would have to work into July to make what men made in the previous calendar year,” says Farrell. “Latinas would have to work until October to make what men make in the previous year. It’s much worse for women of color.” Farrell says California’s new first-in-the-nation hike in the hourly minimum wage, to $15, should go a long way toward improving pay equity. State lawmakers also passed a bill last year to ban retaliation against workers who compare salaries. This year, Farrell is supporting AB 1676,

legislation introduced by Assemblywoman Nora Campos, that bans companies from asking applicants about their salary history. “When an employer asks a woman what she made at her last job, that’s in some circumstances been depressed by prior discrimination, and she starts off on unequal pay footing,” Farrell says. On the federal level, the report authors would like to see Congress pass the Fair Pay Act, the Equal Rights Act, and bills to guarantee family leave, universal child care and flexible work schedules.

Budapest 2024 Launches Olympic Bid

The timing is appropriate, as this week Hungary also celebrates its part in the founding of the modern Olympics and the first gold medal ever won for the country in the 1896 Olympic Games. A program of coordinated citywide activities commenced this morning at the Freedom Statue, a national symbol of liberty and peace that commands spectacular views over the Citadella. West Coast Premiere of Sarah Ruhl’s Comedy “Stage Kiss”

By Beverly Cohn Before launching into a review of “Stage Kiss,” I think it important to say a word or two about satire. Many of us are familiar with “Saturday Night Live” or the famous “The Second City” where no subject got past the long reach of their collective satirical eye. This genre, which actually goes back to early Greek plays, does not appeal to everyone’s theatrical taste palette. Some may not find it funny while others might actually be offended. No judgment intended. I am, however, one of those people with a giddy sense of humor and am a sucker for satire or “low-brow” humor. I have to admit that a pie in the face or someone slipping on a banana peel, tickles my funny bone. So, I plead guilty to being a fan of such comedy, which brings me back to the play at hand. “Stage Kiss” premiered at Playwrights Horizons in New York City and earned an Off-Broadway Critics’ pick. Performed on the West Coast for the first time, Miss Ruhl’s clever send-up of the drama, which takes place backstage as well as off stage, has travelled well. Illuminating the angst, Ruhl’s “insider script” sheds a light on the insecurity housed in some actors and directors, and the sometimes-blurred lines between make-believe vs. real life realities. “Stage Kiss” definitely moves back and forth between those two worlds. A very well written Act 1 begins with “She,” or the character of Ada Wilcox, a neurotic actress played amazingly well by Glenne Headly who has sharp comic timing and a playful vocal instrument. Entering a bare stage, she is auditioning for a lead role for the first time in years and is nervous. She is late which adds to her anxiety. Before Ada can settle down and read the “sides,” (her scenes only) she asks permission to move the chair which faces her audition partner Kevin, well played by

Matthew Scott Montgomery, who contrasts her broad reading with just line readings. Stalling, she now asks the director to tell her the story line, which basically is about a woman who is dying of cancer and her wish is to see her former lover for the last time. The clearly inept director, appropriately played by Tim Bagley, sits patiently at a table, answers all her questions, and waits until she stops flitting about the stage and finally settles down. The scene calls for her to kiss Kevin and she says, “Do you mind if I kiss you? You look so young so I don’t want to traumatize you.” When they come to the kiss, the gymnastics are hysterical as they try to physically figure out how to do it. At one point, the director asks her if she can sing and she says, “I can learn to sing” and unhappy with her audition adds, “I could learn to act, too.” Miraculously, she is cast in the role and rehearsals are about to commence. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Ada, her former lover, deliciously played by Barry Del Sherman, has been cast to play the role of her former lover who is a successful sculptor living in Sweden. Initially, there is tension between them, but remember the name of the play as there are multiple, and I mean multiple, long, passionate kisses which ignites their old feelings for each other. Since that affair, the actress has moved on with her life and is now married to investment banker Jack Wilcox, amusingly played Stephen Caffrey. His characterization is solid as the understanding and sometimescuckolded husband. John is not married but lives with his girlfriend Laurie, well played by Melody Butiu. She is a schoolteacher from the midwest and comes off as a loving, kind, spiritual woman. Laurie appears to be totally indifferent when she barges in on John and Ada who have just spent a sex-filled night in this cramped apartment. She scurries around

the apartment unpacking groceries and offering Ada coffee. We find out later that she has an unusual yardstick for relationships. Ada’s blue-haired, demanding, foul-mouthed daughter is played by Emily James, who also plays the maid. As is the norm for actors to question motivation during rehearsals, John turns to the director, who is always eating or drinking something from a container, and asks about a moment. The director offers the well-known cliché, “Follow your instincts,” which is

code for not knowing exactly what to do in that particular moment. At one point, Ada comments “This play is kind of awful,” and in fact the playwithin-the play is deliberately awful and eventually the unpleasant reviews substantiates her opinion. It’s close to opening night and John, who sprained his ankle, is on crutches. Kevin, who is gay, is John’s understudy. When asked to do the role he is fearful that if he kisses Ada, the audience will say, “Really?” Sure!” “And I will get laughed off the stage.” So, in true show biz tradition, John consents to perform on opening night, crutches and all. Most of the action in Act I basically takes place on a bare stage. Finally it’s opening night and Scenic Designer Keith Mitchell transforms the naked stage into a beautifully designed lavish set. The director greets the audience asking them to turn off their devices informing them, “There will strobe lights and gun shots for those of you who have seizures.” This is a good time to mention that John Ballinger’s original music is delightful in its grand Broadway musical tone and creates excitement for the opening and ensuing scenes. Adding to the perfect look of the production is Lap Chi Chu’s splendid

There are scenes with a hooker and her pimp, also characterized by Matthew Scott Montgomery. At one point the director barges in on John and Ada to tell them he has a new play in mind and begins to unfold the story. It was at this point that I looked at my watch and thought, “This play really has to end.” So in summary, it’s worth seeing the play for the originality of Act I, which is well-written satire served by an excellent cast and spot-on direction by Bart DeLorenzo, who keeps the pace moving at its best comedic pace and elicits wonderful performances from this talented ensemble. But, I wish someone would have said “cut” sooner. Boys & Girls Second Annual Sports Heroes Luncheon

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Boys and Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley held its Second Annual Sports Heroes Luncheon on April 14th. The event honored local sports heroes and student athletes. The event was held at the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort and was supported by The Desert Sun. The MVP sponsors were CBL Foundation and Rasmuson Foundation. Connie Lurie chaired the event. There was a cocktail hour where the athletes and heroes got to meet. The 22 top athletes were told they were to escort the Sports Heroes to the stage. Kris Long served as Emcee and introduced the 10 Sports legends to be honored. Honorees were Randy Caballero, sports legends, Steve Garvey, Ted Sizemore, Jim Hardy, Jim Lefebvre, Oscar Lua, Bob Lurie, Marty Schottenheimer, Paul Warfield and Ed White.

Many of the sports figures are members of the Hall of Fame in their chosen sport. Other former honorees and Sports heroes attending were Rosie Casals, Ron Fairly, Antonio Diaz, Tom Flores and others. Emcee Al Michaels was supposed to attend but was sidelined with a bad back and possible surgery. Close to 300 people attended this luncheon. There was of course a silent auction and some of the items were autographed by the attending legends. 22 top local athletes were honored as well. Emcees were local sports writer, Larry Bohannan and Desert Suns Shad Powers and Nathan Brown. They announced all the honorees and their sport. Honorees were Luis Barrera, Koty Burton, Morgan Dewyer, Azalea Guanajuato, Tayler Hawkins, Leo Hsiang, Tiani Jadulang, Jiyoon Jang, Christian Kontasix,

Desiree Lewis, Anthony Mantanona, Nate Lopez, Christian Meyer, Hailey Murdica, Charles Neal, Marisa Rodriquez, Destiny Salinas, Jazmyne Santiel, Ryan Sawyer, Elise Stein, Alyssa Felasquez and Fred Zaragoza. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Coachella Valley Chapter of Israel Cancer Research Fund held its annual fundraising luncheon at the Annenberg Center for Health Sciences on the Eisenhower Medical Center Campus on April 18th. Approximately 100 guests listened to three doctors speak about AIDS and Cancer Research. Co-chairs Patrick Mundt and Dr. Jeralyn Brossfield were emcees for the event. The luncheon was hosted by the Eisenhower Medical Center, Desert AIDS project and Israel Cancer Research. The keynote speaker was Dr. Ran Taube from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Taube

spoke about the research being done where studies have shown there is a higher risk of heart attacks, cancers and infections among HIV and AIDS patients. The amount of research is being done by many facilities, and they share their information and findings. Dr. Ken Lichtenstein, Medical Director at Eisenhower and Dr. Steven Scheibel, Director of Research at Desert AIDS Project, spoke about the great strides in medicine and research that has given many a longer life. The many forms of cancers are down because of treatments found in research and early detection. They found that creating a healthier lifestyle, stopping smoking,

diet, sports are all beneficial in the fight. Breakthroughs that Israel Cancer Research Fund has studied include Velcade, Gleeevec.Doxil, The p53 Gene, DNA methylation, the Rad51 Gene, and a novel Bone Marrow Transplant technique that fights all forms of cancers. ICRF Coachella Chapter Board President Patrick Mundt said that what they do is pure research, and they derive no monetary benefit. What the ICRF discovers they share. They work with all religious and ethnic researchers, and together they make things happen and are leaders in the fight against Cancer. The journey from AIDS to Cancer was a main topic of the day. a painting. He has extensive experience in the entertainment industry along with painting murals. Townsley is a local artist living in Cathedral City. He put a lot of his thoughts about the Keller’s in his painting. The Painting shows his conception of many operas with Mickey Mouse as the conductor. This bright and colorful painting will be proudly displayed either in their home or at their restaurant, LULUs, in Palm Springs. The program started with the music of the “D Company” during the cocktail hour and during dinner. The opera part of the program started after dinner, and dessert was served. Victoria Kirsch was the Music Director and Pianist and has been with Opera Arts for all seven years. Kirsch told about the meaning of each song being performed. Kirsch then introduced the two beautiful songstresses,

Jamie Chamberline, a Soprano and Danielle Marcelle Bond, a Messo-Soprano. The songs depict two girls traveling to Paris and returning home. The two women sang solo performances with a couple of duets, and the final duet was from West-Side Story. A piano solo by Victoria Kirsch came during the middle of the concert. About 100 opera lovers enjoyed the evening’s performance. Rosenthal said that Opera Arts works with outreach programs in the East Valley and other parts of the Desert in Art Education. She said that with Cooperation and love with other charities like the Steinway programs, they bring Art to all our children. Several children were invited to the dinner because of the efforts they have made with essays and posters.

Major pesticide brand dropping bee-killing chemical

By Desert Star Staff Ortho, a top US manufacturer of lawn and garden pesticides, will phase out products containing the neonicotinoid class of chemicals, the use of which has been linked to a massive decline in honeybee population. Ortho, a division of Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, announced Tuesday that it will cease the use of neonicotinoid (“neonic”) ingredients imidacloprid, clothianidin and dinotefuran by 2017, while phasing out neonics in eight products that are used to kill garden pests by the year 2021. Tim Martin, Ortho’s vice president and general manager, said the company will also begin a “multi-year partnership” with pollinator advocacy organizations to “to promote pollinator habitat” and “homeowner education” initiatives to encourage “responsible use of pesticides where

pollinators can be found.” “This decision comes after careful consideration regarding the range of possible threats to honey bees and other pollinators,” Martin said in a statement. “While agencies in the United States are still evaluating the overall impact of neonics on pollinator populations, it’s time for Ortho to move on.” Martin added that the change may require gardeners to apply Ortho products more frequently than is currently recommended, and that the cost of products will not change significantly. Neonics attack the central nervous systems of insects, causing tremors, paralysis, and death. The insecticide is absorbed into treated plants and distributed in their vascular systems, rendering various parts – including the roots, leaves, stem, flowers, nectar, pollen and guttation fluid – toxic to insects. Neonics like imidacloprid were developed in the 1990s

to boost yields of staple crops such as corn, but they are also widely used on annual and perennial plants in lawns and gardens. Researchers believe the neonics are causing some kind of biological reaction in bees that has been blamed for Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), the disease killing off honeybees and threatening pollination of the world’s crops. While regulatory agencies in the US are still assessing the impact of neonics on bee populations, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has said imidacloprid can be a threat to various bees and other pollinators. Groups wary of pesticide use refer to current research blaming the cause of CCD on two major types of neonics, including imidacloprid. Another study found that bees exposed to “field-realistic” doses of neonics gather less than half the pollen that they normally do, causing

starvation among their young. Environmentalists are calling on the EPA to join the European Commission in adopting a moratorium on such insecticides. In 2013, The EC instituted a twoyear moratorium on the use of three neonic pesticides, including imidacloprid. In 2015, the EPA proposed a prohibition on the use of pesticides that are toxic to bees – including neonics – when crops are in bloom, and temporarily halted the approval of new outdoor neonic uses until new bee data is submitted and pollinator risk assessments are complete. n March, the US Fish and Wildlife Service said it will consider protecting two species of wild bumblebees under the Endangered Species Act. Meanwhile, major neonic producers like Bayer CropScience and Syngenta have said that claims of neonic effects on bee populations

were exaggerated. Honeybees pollinate more than 100 US crops that are worth more than $200 billion a year. CCD has killed tens of millions of honeybees in the US, with annual death rates of about 30 percent. Since 2006, about 10 million beehives at an average value of $200 each have been lost, according to a 2013 US Department of Agriculture Study. CCD is threatening the existence of those crops. In May of 2015, the Obama administration announced a strategy to protect bee habitats. The National Strategy to Promote the Health of Honey Bees and Other Pollinators aims to reduce honeybee colony losses during winter to no more than 15 percent within a decade. The strategy also states that the government and private entities will restore or enhance 7 million acres of land for pollinators over the next five years.

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California has almost 50,000 oil wells and more than 4,100 gas wells – and a new report says federal law allows companies to use chemicals for drilling and fracking with virtually no health testing and then use confidentiality claims to hide basic information on what’s being injected. The report, by the nonprofit advocacy group the Partnership for Policy Integrity, reviewed

EPA records and found that health information was made public in only two of 99 cases. Dusty Horwitt, senior counsel with the Partnership for Policy Integrity, says the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act is too lax. “Companies can claim the chemicals’ name confidential, same thing with the expected production volume, how people might be exposed to the chemical,” he states. “And that prevents people from

identifying in some cases where the chemicals are used.” The EPA has expressed concern about many of these chemicals, saying exposure can cause skin and eye irritation and be toxic to the brain, liver and kidneys. Oil and gas companies say they comply with the law and are within their rights to claim proprietary information as confidential. Horwitt says the EPA tests don’t take into account the

possibilityof leaks or spills, and adds that researchers found that two of the chemicals of concern have been used in . “We think it’s important that someone from the state of California or an independent researcher go to these well sites and make sure that these chemicals aren’t migrating into groundwater or otherwise getting out into the environment where they can come into contact with people,” he states. Two bills are making

their way through Congress that improve the rules on confidentiality and make it easier for the EPA to request more health tests. But Horwitt notes that the bills still don’t require public disclosure of information about the chemicals or the health testing. California does have a fracking disclosure registry called FracFocus, but companies’ participation in it is voluntary.

How To Zap Business Executives Out Of Their Comfort Zones

By Desert Star Staff What happens when a corporation’s leadership is engaged, talented and competent but so stuck in their ways that they can’t quite grasp the importance of acting as a strategic, forward-thinking team? It could be time for drastic measures – so drastic that company vice presidents might be left mumbling, “What just happened?” “Shake them up,” says Frank Granara, CEO of General Insulation Co. and co-author with Lorraine Grubbs of “Beyond the Executive Comfort Zone: Outrageous Tactics to Ignite Individual Performance” (www. executivecomfortzone.com). “Don’t be afraid to get their attention in an overthe-top way, even if it means

pretending you’re Zeus – a very miffed Zeus.” Granara never asks anyone to fire lightning bolts he wouldn’t himself. He once dressed as the top Greek god at a company training session – complete with blaring music and swirling clouds – and required his dubious vice presidents to dress as gods, too. “I would have called it outside the box thinking, but I’m not even sure Frank has a box,” says Grubbs, the consultant who helped Granara design a series of six imaginative sessions that reinvigorated his company. She and Granara say such extreme tactics may sound absurd, but they can snap executives out of their doldrums and inspire them to view daily decisions from

a different perspective. “Not every company CEO will go to the extremes Frank did,” Grubbs says. “But they still can think creatively – and even outrageously – in figuring out ways to help their company leaders evolve into a high-performing team.” The co-authors say some of the lessons they learned from the sessions that other CEOs can benefit from include: • Place people in the right roles. Sometimes a job just isn’t the right fit for the individual. Rather than fire them, place them in a role that capitalizes on their strengths. At the conclusion of his company’s training sessions, Granara assigned 40 percent of his vice presidents to new positions that better matched their abilities and potential. • Train first, then promote.

Often, high-performing employees are rewarded with promotions, but are woefully unprepared for their new duties. “Promoting people and then training them afterward is not the best way to develop leaders,” Granara says. • There is little growth without discomfort. Most people prefer to keep everything as is once they become comfortable. That may get the job done, but improvement won’t happen unless people are confronted with situations that throw them off balance. “Be proactive,” Grubbs says. “Companies that can get their leadership teams thinking strategically are rewarded with greater teamwork and a better bottom line.”

By Desert Star Staff SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - A move to change Illinois’ birth certificate law is earning praise from a civil rights watchdog. According to the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois, the change will help thousands of transgender residents in the state. House Bill 6073, introduced by Rep. Greg Harris, D-Chicago, passed out of committee on Monday. Supporters argue it would update the law by removing a requirement that transgender people must have surgery in order to change the gender marker on their birth certificate. John Knight, director of the LGBT and HIV Project for the ACLU of Illinois, said transgender people often can face discrimination when they are “outed” against their will. “

A birth certificate is one document that can end up revealing someone’s transgender status,” he said. “We know that transgender people face overwhelming discrimination in so many aspects of their lives, including employment. This helps reduce that possibility.” Illinois hasn’t updated its birth certificate gender marker law since 1962. HB 6073 would use the same standard as the federal government for changing gender markers on passports. The bill is headed to the full House for a vote. Also on Monday, a separate bill aimed at regulating how transgender students use Illinois school restrooms was sent down by lawmakers to a subcommittee. Knight said he’s hopeful that means House Bill 4474, introduced by Rep.

Tom Morrison, R-Palatine, will not move forward during this session. Knight has argued that the bill is discriminatory because it would deny transgender students access to genderappropriate restrooms and would run afoul of federal civil rights protections. “Title IX protects against discrimination against transgender kids,” he said, “and

this effectively would put every school district in Illinois at risk of losing their federal dollars.” This comes just a few weeks after North Carolina passed a law overriding local protections for LGBT people. Recently, South Dakota’s governor killed a similar bathroom regulation bill, although several other states are still considering like-minded legislation.

Q: And here in America? Female actors are considered to be unemployable after thirty-five or so, with exceptions of course when it involves stars. Q: But you’re still working today as an actor over sixty. A: Yes, thank goodness, but not many people do what I do, have done, and can still do. I’m very fortunate. I came from an acting family. My mother was a successful Eastern Russia actress who began acting at age seven. She had a successful stage and film career. Later, she wrote several books on actresses in Hollywood.

This past week I was fortunate to interview iconic international star of stage, screen and television, Irina Maleeva, who latest feature film “The Meddler”, starring Susan Sarandon, opens nationwide on April 22nd. Maleeva, born in Bulgaria but who has lived in the United States for over 40 years, started her movie career at the tender age of 14 while living in Italy. She was discovered by famed filmmaker Federico Fellini and went on to work with some of the premiere filmmakers including Orson Welles. Considering the recent dust-up at the 2016 Oscar ceremonies regarding the lack of diversity in the movie industry, to say nothing about the lack of roles for middleage actors and beyond, the interview with Maleeva seemed like an interesting way to get a first-person perspective on this hot button topic. Q: Hollywood and television are at long last acknowledging that the cinema and TV industries are in a state of transition when it comes to the subject of diversity in the arts. What are your observations on the subject of work for people of color with an emphasis on female actors of ‘a certain age’? A: To be honest, I have mixed feelings about the subject. I favor diversity in the industry, of course. I’m a European woman who’s been a U.S. citizen for many years, and as an actor I applaud the industry for finally coming to grips with this issue. Q:Tell me about all those references to the “La Dolce Vida” lifestyle when you worked with Fellini in “Satyricon”, “Spirits From the Dead”, and “Roma”. A: Yes, I worked with the great Fellini on those films. He was a film genius and a very nice man. I also worked opposite the brilliant Orson Welles in “The Merchant of Venice”. I’m sorry, however, to disappoint you regarding onset gossip, but we were too busy just learning our lines and playing our parts. Of course I can’t speak for everyone during that wild era...(laughs) Q: What was it like living and working in Rome as young actors? A: It was a golden time in the Italian cinema. The Via Veneto was the great street where you brushed elbows with celebrities and movie people all over the place. During that period, Italy was producing 300 plus films a year. Those were exciting times to be an actor. Then the movies in Italy changed some twenty years ago and I haven’t made a film there in over ten years. European films now are chasing the dollars. They’re not making stories or character driven films as they used to do. Now, it’s films with an edge or all action. Q: Just like today’s American movie industry. A: Working in early American films I was usually cast as an Eastern European female with a heavy accent, even though I speak seven languages. I’ve been told that even my face has an accent, according to casting directors.

Q: Speaking of working today, you have a new movie called “The Meddler” opening nationwide this month starring Susan Sarandon. What role do you play in it? A: I play Angie, Susan’s sister-in-law from New York. Susan’s character has lost her husband and I help her get through her new widowgrieving process. It’s a broad comic role. It was a wonderful experience working with

Susan and our amazing director Lorene Scafaria. Susan is such a generous and giving actor. I loved it.

Q:You also have a gueststarring role this spring on David Duchovny’s NBC series “Aquarius” in a segment called “While My Guitar Gently Weeps “. What’s that about? A: I play Vira, a sweet Ukrainian lady who turns out to be a murderess and a con-woman who causes problems for Duchovny’s cop character who is pursuing the Manson Family. Russian actress Ludmila Velikaia, who lives in San Diego, and I play two women in their sixties who are insurance fraud scam artists. We had a ball doing it. You know, getting serious for a minute, David is an interesting and very caring man. He shared a story with me as how he rescued a dog he found lying on the road one day on his way to the set. He stopped, put the animal in his car and drove it to a vet hospital, saving its life. The word ‘tohovny’ means a person with a lot of soul. David certainly has that. How many people stop on their way to work to rescue an animal lying on a road?

Q: Irina, I know you have a one-woman show called “Illusions”, a musical memoir of a life well lived that you wrote and performed at the Hudson Theatre in Hollywood last year. Do you have any plans to take it on the road somewhere? A: I would love to, but I don’t have a theatrical agent to represent me in such a venture.
