Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control Celebrates 95 years

Mosquito control is a community effort, and we are proud to work with you. California Mosquito Awareness Week begins April 16-22, 2023.

Want to hear a story? Ninetyfive years ago, the Coachella Valley was experiencing a significant problem with eye gnats. They were causing the pink eye to spread so rapidly that schools in the Coachella Valley closed for two months! In response, the Mosquito Abatement District was created.

“Fortunately, today we don’t have eye gnats to worry much about,” says

Information Manager Tammy Gordon, “But we do have disease-carrying mosquitoes and invasive fire ants. So, we continue to work with you to keep our neighborhoods safe and healthy.”

Join us in celebrating 95 years of service and California Mosquito Awareness Week by stopping by our booth at a community event and learning more about our work. We are excited to share our latest innovations in mosquito control, including

using drones and SIT (Sterile Insect Technique) to control the population of female mosquitoes.

The entire community needs involvement to make

the most significant impact in controlling mosquitoes. We’re proud to be working beside you for 95 years!

So please celebrate with us and learn how

we work together to keep the Coachella Valley mosquito-free! Join us virtually and at local events April 16-22, Continues on Page 3

MUSIC

NAMM Show Celebrates Icons, Rising Stars and Musical Innovation

On April 13, the 2023 edition of The NAMM Show returned to the Anaheim Convention Center in Southern California. Last held in June instead of the traditional January dates on the calendar, this year’s event was 20 percent larger and had 200 more exhibitors. There were over 3,500 exhibiting brands and 200+ music panels and sessions.

Day 1 got off to a winning start early with the Breakfast of Champions session hosted by NAMM President and CEO Joe Lamond. It featured Grammywinning Creedence Clearwater Revival singer/songwriter/ guitarist John Fogerty, who was presented with the Music for Life Award and did a Q&A.

Lamond has led the Carlsbad-based not-for-profit association NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) for 20+ years and will be retiring from the position. His replacement is music education advocate John Mlynczak. As a surprise, Lamond’s predecessor presented him with a Music for Life Award and Mlynczak put Lamond in the interviewee “hot seat” chair.

During Fogerty’s brief chat with Lamond, he relayed how serving in the military during

the 1960s affected his music. “We got vocal about the war in Vietnam. It was the first time a whole generation was questioning government policy and not told the truth about” why we were there. “That came out in my songwriting, obviously, with ‘Fortunate Son,’ like a flaming arrow. “I had the viewpoint that sending kids off to die for business” was useless. “I couldn’t help myself.”

Fogerty was honorably discharged from Army active duty in 1967. Immediately after, he went to a drugstore and bought a small notebook to jot down song titles and other ideas. At NAMM, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer took that original binder out of protective covering and showed it to Lamond and the audience.

It was amazing to see.

Then he revealed how the ‘69 CCR hit “Proud Mary” (famously covered by Ike & Tina Turner) was written. “I knew it was a classic” right away.

“I knew I had written a great song,” he said. “I thought, ‘I hope I can do this again.’ ‘’

Elsewhere in the discussion, Fogerty recalled the influence of a music teacher in school and that even though he was shy, he’d sometimes go over to a classroom piano and start

playing “Do You Wanna Dance” and suddenly the other students would be dancing. “I met two of the guys from Creedence in that room later on.”

About having perseverance when first starting as an artist, Fogerty said, “If people say you’re no good and that stops you, you probably weren’t meant for this job.” Fogerty had just began describing how the 2020 album Fogerty’s Factory recorded with his children came about when an alert rang out and the conference room had to be cleared - a false alarm. This writer could have listened to Fogerty talk for hours. (GP)

On the main trade show floor, Sheldon Dingwall, founder of Canada’s Dingwall Guitars, did a special presentation of the new limited edition John Taylor signature Rio Dream Bass. Reps from collaborator Rupert Neve Designs, which crafted the onboard preamp, were on hand.

Taylor’s female assistant described how the orange and green pastel stripes paid subtle tribute to Duran Duran’s Rio album cover design by Patrick Nagel without being “overtly obvious.” She also pointed out two small symbols used by the band in the ‘80s (such an eye) on the guitar’s fretboard and headstock that longtime

fans will instantly recognize.

Each bass guitar is individually numbered and includes a Hipshot Drop D Xtender key, special string pack, spare cream

pickguard and custom gig bag. Currently on tour in Europe, Taylor said via video that the bass felt “intuitive to me from

Groups Call for Expanding Power Outage Battery-Backup Program

Our house lost power a few nights ago during one of 2023’s record-setting storms. For most people, losing control is a minor inconvenience. However, for our family, losing power is a medical emergency.

People who use medical devices that depend on electricity need continuous access. Some of my son’s most critical machines—such as his ventilator—have built-in battery backup. But other appliances need to be plugged in, like the oxygen concentrator that supplies oxygen to help with breathing and the humidifier that adds moisture to the air from the ventilator. Previously when the power went out, I had to scramble to jerry-rig his ventilator circuit to run without many of the accessory machines he usually uses. This required making quick, complicated changes in the dark, risking his health. I then had to quickly figure out how to get to a place with electricity.

But on this occasion, I had access to a portable power station for the first time. That meant I could unplug the machines from the wall and plug them into backup power without the outage affecting my son.

Portable power stations are rechargeable batteries that can provide hours of backup electricity, which is especially important for people who use medical devices or assistive technology. The battery takes up about the same amount of space as a suitcase, and using it is as simple as turning it on and plugging equipment into it. But even though this lifesaving technology exists, most people who need it don’t have access to it because of cost.

The power bank we used to keep my son’s equipment running overnight was funded by my utility provider, Pacific Gas & Electric’s (PG&E) Disability Disaster Access and Resources Program. This program pays for portable backup batteries, food replacement, transportation, and hotel stays related to power outages. The program works well—but only a few California residents qualify. It’s only open to disabled PG&E

Dueling Opinions Likely to Send Abortion Issue to U.S. Supreme Court

Access to medication

abortion will be front and center this week after two competing court rulings, in Texas and Washington, were handed down Friday, with one quickly appealed by the U.S. Justice Department.

The Texas ruling invalidated the Food and Drug Administration’s approval 23 years ago of the abortion pill mifepristone. If upheld, the legislation would force it off the market nationwide, not just in Texas.

Rachel Fey, vice president of policy and strategic partnerships for Power to Decide, said the lawsuit filed in the Northern Texas district

and decided by conservative federal Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk was a clear case of “judge-shopping.”

“The plaintiffs here are going about trying to ban medication abortion nationwide through the courts instead of through the ‘court of public opinion’ because they know they wouldn’t win there,” Fey asserted.

According to a survey by the Public Religion Research Institute, 64% of Americans believe abortion should be legal in most cases.

Shortly after the Texas decision, a judge in Washington state issued a separate opinion, ruling that mifepristone is safe and effective and ordering the FDA to preserve “the status quo” and retain access in 17 states.

For decades, anti-abortion opponents said they wanted the issue decided by states. It happened after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year, the federal guarantee to abortion access

under the U.S. Constitution.

But Fey believes anti-abortion activists in so-called “red states” want all others to conform to their beliefs.

“As soon as it’s been ‘back to the states,’ we’ve seen this case in Texas, that

could find its way to the Fifth Circuit, or even the Supreme Court in the coming months, attempting to ban medication abortion which is more than 60% of all abortions in the United States,” Fey outlined.

Since both court rulings

cannot stand, experts say, it is likely a matter of days before mifepristone is banned nationwide, while a second pill also used for the procedure will remain available.

First Responders Deal with Electric-Vehicle Accidents

As the number of electric vehicles on Illinois roads grows, so does the danger of injury for emergency medical technicians and firefighters responding to EV accidents.

The auto industry is beginning to offer training for first responders - particularly those in rural areas - to deal with the high voltage and other dangers found in EVs. Starting next week in suburban Chicago, General Motors and the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute will kick off a national tour, offering two days of information and training.

For the uninitiated, said Joe McLaine, a staff engineer at GM, cutting into an electric vehicle can be very dangerous.

“Most electrified vehicles worldwide have high-voltage components,” he said. “Highvoltage components could be potentially dangerous if you were to handle things. So we, as an industry, have moved toward identifying those potentially hazardous high-voltage components with the color orange.”

McLaine said the training,

offered at no cost, covers battery and EV technology details, dispels misconceptions, and shares best practices. Next week’s sessions are Wednesday and Thursday in Wheeling. For information or to register, look online at GMEVfirstrepsondertraining. com.

While the training is open to all first responders, McLaine said it’s essential for rural EMTs and firefighters, who are volunteers and may have different

training than professionals.

“Most of the fire services in the United States, the vast majority are from volunteer fire departments,” he said. “Where we’ve gone around the country, and where we’ve targeted certain areas that we deliver this training, we have seen a tremendous outpouring of support and appreciation for delivering this training.”

McLaine said the sessions would teach first responders how to approach high-voltage

disconnect and stabilization, venting, flames, arc flash, and unswitched energy - as well as the differences between internal combustion engines and EVs.

“What we have done with the in-person, hands-on training is not lecture-based,” he said. “We have people interact with the product, get ‘up close and personal’ with many of the battery components, the high-voltage motors and the other components, and a whole host of vehicles.”

Prevent mosquitoes around your home:

Check for overwatering. Clean lawn drains regularly and reduces or eliminate landscape irrigation run-off to the street. Inspect yards for standing water sources. Drain the water collected under potted plants,

birdbaths, tires, and other water-holding containers.

Clean and scrub pet dishes and water features weekly.

Prevent mosquito bites: Don’t go outside around dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

Wear insect repellent with EPA-registered ingredients. Cover up. Wear long sleeve shirts, pants, socks, and shoes when mosquitoes are most active. Check window and door screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.

ESOTERIC ASTROLOGY AS NEWS FOR WEEK APRIL 19 – 25, 2023

MERCURY

RETROGRADE – A MAGICAL TIME!

Mercury begins its second retrograde of the year sometime after midnight and before dawn, Friday, April 21. Mercury retrogrades in Taurus till May 14, moving back from 15 degrees to 6 degrees Taurus. As with all retrogrades, we begin to focus our thoughts and behaviors and ways of seeing the world with the “re” words - redo, review, re-visit, re-frame, re-think, re-examine, re-evaluate. Which we do with all ideas, thoughts, plans, studies and agendas created since Mercury’s last retro (January). We look back, assess, re-assess and refine, while also resting and recuperating from a mind exhausted with too many facts.

Let’s review what is best not to do during retrogrades. We don’t create new plans or projects, negotiate or make final decisions, purchase important items (cars, homes, appliances, gifts, etc.). Contracts aren’t signed, agreements aren’t made, money isn’t borrowed or loaned and we don’t expect clear communication or many aware drivers. We know everything’s overlooked, messages aren’t received, details are neglected, keys are misplaced, information’s off-center, minds constantly change, thoughts turn inward, and questions aren’t answered. In other words, possible havoc everywhere and with everyone.

During Mercury retro, we display Virgo tendencies, becoming internally analytical, mentally organized, discriminating, discerning, detailed and practical. However, none of this externalizes because it’s only our minds (Mercury) that are inwardly reorganizing, evaluating and reflecting.

So now let’s go beyond the usual interpretation of Mercury retrograde – a phase of inconveniences, bad drivers, forgotten keys, and generally a bad time had by all (except natal Mercury

RISA’S STARS

retrograders). Mercury retrograde has function and purpose. The “inconveniences” are messages to do something different than “business as usual.”

During Mercury retrograde new information can be gathered from the deepest reaches - information not only hidden during Mercury direct times, but information revelatory and unique.

Mercury is the planet of Mind, messenger of the Gods, the way through which we can access our brilliance, often hidden by day to day realities. It is as if the Rain Cloud of Knowable Things suddenly appears.

How do we respond? We consider Mercury retrograde a time of inner perception and observation – actually an experiment everyone participates in. It’s a magical time, a magical mystery threeweek tour, a time to observe inner and outer realities with intelligence, knowledge, and, above all, humor.

ARIES: As Mercury retrogrades the next three weeks and while in its retrograde shadow (‘til mid-June), the focus will be on values (what is of value to you, what are your values, are you of value and how do you live your values?). There will also be a focus on resourcespast, present and future – their usefulness and how to maintain finances for all that is needed. The eclipse will shake things up in terms of self-identity, will and purpose. All good things. One more item - investigate silver and gold.

TAURUS: This retrograde belongs to both you and your shadow-friend, Scorpio. Later in the year Jupiter also retrogrades in Taurus. This is your year of change. You must be feeling this already – a reassessment of everything about the self as well as the past. Uranus has been playing with your emotions creating

disruptions in daily life while also refining your emotions for more changes to come. Maintain as much stability as possible. Remain focused in the heart. Know you are immortal. Venus is watching over you. Gaze at tarot cards.

GEMINI: You will find yourself in the depths and experiences that Pisces lives with – on a boat, drifting through Neptune, no steering, no directions, only able to follow the stars at night, especially the North Star. You will be in deep psychological waters and many emotions will be present, which can be difficult for the ever-thinking mental mercurial Gemini. You may retreat for a while, finding your own way through multiple dream worlds. Know that love underlies all happenings, whether inner or outer events.

CANCER: This will be a good time to reconnect with those from the past. Perhaps friends, family or a group you were part of, the latter thinking you outgrew them. Maybe not. The retrograde will uncover old wishes, new hopes wishes and dreams. Some you’ve forgotten, some you’ve held in your heart a long time and some are new. These all point out thoughts, visions and possibilities about your future. What would you want it to be?

LEO: Professional plans shake and jostle about both in your mind and in real life. There may be challenges, dilemmas, and new experiences to be thought through concerning your daily life’s work. You will wonder should you stay or should you go? You will consider the value of your work and its usefulness to the world. Humility is your keyword. A true leader knows the value of co-workers around them, always offering openings for their talents to come forth. Then your gifts shine more brightly.

VIRGO: It’s good to ponder for the next many weeks on travel, journeys, pilgrimages, culture and countries far away. Embrace anything that takes you on detours which may lead to the real road (“road less traveled”). Mercury retro times are actually exciting times for Virgos. Your mind works overtime integrating multiple impressions from the Mind of God. The result is your sense of faith deepens and joy permanently establishes itself in your heart. Like a miracle!

LIBRA: Have you invested in gold and silver yet? If not, it’s best to do so immediately. Investments and resources should be assessed, making any changes necessary after the retrograde. Account for your money, what comes in, where it goes, how money is spent. Be sure to maintain a healthy savings. The economic picture in our country is fast changing. Keep up. It’s important to have Goodwill with everyone in your life. This brings you to a state of comfort, ease and above all peace. Just do it.

SCORPIO: You will sense you’re at the edge or end of something. This clears the path for a new creation, a new endeavor. So much is changing in your life. If we were looking at a tarot deck, we would see elephants in a desert, walking and linked together. Elephants are Ganesh the spiritual mother nurturing you through this change. Everything is completing itself so you can take a step into the new reality. Chains from the past are breaking allowing you a sense of liberation and freedom. The wait now is simply an interlude. Patience.

SAGITTARIUS: Flexibility and fluidity are needed during this retrograde. Allow yourself to feel completely what is occurring which is change, change and more change. It will affect your daily life.

You can work with the changes by tending carefully to health and wellbeing. During the retrograde rethink how you want your future day-to-day to play out. Rethink each moment from morning till night time. Make all tasks sacred and holy. Exercise more, rest more, eat better. Think of yourself as a permanent fixture at Cafe Gratitude.

CAPRICORN: You are the responsible one of the zodiac, making plans and following through no matter what occurs. However, Mercury retrograde never gets that message. So what may occur in the next three or more weeks? Plans may be upended, you may have no time for pleasure or entertainment, children or young ones may need you more and any thoughts of creativity fly out the door. Maybe. Notice any analytical thoughts that help in challenging situations. Take time to rest. Know that all that you give is returned to you ten-fold.

AQUARIUS: There is a focus on home, family, land, property and things that nurture and nourish. You may want to clean and reorganize the home. Careful with communication with family members. There may be misunderstandings. Some Aquarians may journey to previous homes or visit family. It’s possible an opportunity or desire arises to move. It’s important to eat the right foods for your blood type to help with digestion. You are creating, with friends, the family that is just right for you. Your presence opens their hearts.

PISCES: It’s a good idea to be out and about in the neighborhood, get to know the neighbors, observe gardens, yards, fences and gates. Take short field trips with friends. Reuniting with siblings, relatives and friends could provide fun and laughter and relaxation. Always be kinder than is needed when communicating. This Mercury retrograde affects all interactions. You will want to speak with conscious Goodwill in all encounters. Let Goodwill and Right Relations be your personal Mercury retrograde endeavor.

The HOA Is Not Working With Me on Solar

Hi Kelly, I have been trying to get solar panels installed on my shared roof, which is maintained by the HOA. The CCRs state that the HOA can ask for removal of solar panels for maintenance, and the HOA is trying to force me to remove the panels twice every year so that the roofing vendors can perform maintenance. This will cost me at least $2500 for each instance. When I spoke to the roofing company they said they don’t need to have the panels removed to perform the work, but my HOA fails to budge. They’ve now had the lawyers send me an email saying that the HOA is within their rights to ask for reasonable restrictions around maintenance. Does this go against Civil Code 714? Thanks, D.I., San Jose

Dear D.I.: The law prohibits “unreasonable” restrictions against solar installations, and if the contractor says it’s unnecessary to remove the solar panels twice a year, that expense does sound unreasonable. It’s not unusual to ask homeowners to agree to remove panels if roof repairs require it, but you are saying it is not necessary. If the HOA is forcing you to spend $2,500 twice a year, that could possibly violate Civil Code Section 714(b) by “significantly” increasing the cost of your system. The

key here is whether it is truly necessary to take your panels off so frequently. Pursuing some dialogue with the HOA and sharing with them the roofer’s information hopefully will avoid unnecessary conflict on this. Sincerely, Kelly

Kelly: We live in a condo and I submitted solar plans for approval to our HOA. Over two months after submitting my application I reached out for a status update, nothing. I spoke with the solar company who said that after 45 days if I don’t hear a response the plans are considered approved. I still have not heard anything back. If I move forward with my solar installation what is the backlash I can receive from the HOA and am I in my rights to move forward because I never received a letter and they have been incredibly unresponsive over the past 3 months?

Dear S.V.: Since your home is a condominium, the roof is most likely common area. By installing solar panels on the roof you are not just pursuing an architectural change to your property, you are seeking to change common area. So, I don’t think the architectural approval time limit (and the automatic approval for a non-response) would apply to that proposed roof installation because you don’t own the roof. So, the legal advice from the solar company sounds like very bad advice.

Just moving forward to install your system may result in litigation from the HOA. Try to engage in dialogue with your HOA. They must learn that the laws about solar installations (Civil Code 714, 714.1, and 7546) really favor solar and that the HOA could be at risk if they don’t reasonably cooperate within the boundaries of the

law. The board may not be as knowledgeable as you regarding what the law requires, so share information with them. Hostility or even legal action should be the very last option – remember, these folks are still your neighbors! Best regards, Kelly

Five Steps to Babyproof Your Home

Your little one’s on-the-go adventures mark a massive milestone for their development and your family. Before you allow your baby to trek freely from room to room, get your home ready for a child on the move with these safety steps and precautions:

Prepare before birth. Firsttime parents will likely embark upon a new life filled with late nights, sleep deprivation, and a world of stresses they’ve never experienced or considered. So prepare your home before the baby is born to avoid the panic of waiting until the last minute.

Tour like your tot. The first step toward ensuring your home is ready for a mobile child is to see the world from the same level. Take a crawling tour around

your home to see things that may be in the way or discover hazardous items within easy reach. Use all of your senses to assess any potential dangers.

Latch it up. Protect your little one from sharp objects and heavy items by installing child protection latches on all cabinets and drawers. For an added layer of protection, keep any sharp things and harmful chemicals in high places only adults can reach.

Evaluate leaning objects

Bookshelves, bedside tables, and the items placed on them, such as television sets and other large appliances, can threaten the safety of a small child trying to pull himself up and balance on two feet. Ensure these items are properly secured or put away

unless in use to avoid pulling them on top of your child.

Other safety measures

To properly prepare your home for a mobile child, don’t forget to take steps such as:

* Covering electrical outlets with safety plugs

* Placing safety gates at the top and bottom of staircases

* Installing fireplace screens

* Adding foam padding to sharp furniture corners and edges

* Placing a soft cover over the bathtub waterspout

* Removing blinds with looped cords or installing safety tassels and cord stops

* Stocking your first aid kit

* Putting non-slip pads under rugs

customers who live in highfire-threat areas subject to Public Safety Power Shutoff, a particular type of planned power outage intended to reduce the risk of wildfires. PG&E’s program isn’t available in the cities where most customers live. Other utilities with these programs have similarly narrow restrictions. Those who live in other states, such as the 1-yearold in New York whose mother had to use a bag valve mask to manually give breaths to her child when the ventilator battery ran out, need backup power.

Any power outage is an emergency for people who depend on electricitypowered medical devices to live. When I’m scrambling to change the arrangement of my son’s ventilator circuit in the dark, I don’t care whether

the power is out because of a wildfire threat or because a car knocked over a power pole. From a practical standpoint, it doesn’t make sense for one type of outage to be eligible for utility-funded backup power and the other not to be.

Access to electrical power during outages is an equity issue for low-income California residents. The power bank we used to keep my son’s equipment running retails for almost $6,000—as much as a decent used car. In California, 26% of people with disabilities live below the poverty level. So families don’t have thousands of dollars to spend on a device that will be used, at most, a few times a year. The sad irony is that because portable power stations are so costly for many families, those who can’t afford them may call 911 during outages and request ambulance

transportation to a hospital, an even more significant expense. Gasoline-powered generators are cheaper but not a good option for many disabled people in an emergency. These generators require a wellventilated outdoor space for safe operation. People who live in apartments typically don’t have access to a place to safely operate gas generators or store them when not in use. In addition, setting up and running an outdoor gaspowered generator requires

substantially more strength and agility than using an indoor power station. Using an indoor portable power bank is as easy as bending over to plug equipment into the device.

Access to electrical power during outages is critical as climate change brings wildfires, hotter summers, and unpredictable storms. When the power grid fails, it’s an inconvenience for most people but a matter of life and death for disabled California residents who depend on medical devices

We’re in a drought. We all need to reduce our water use by 15 percent. That’s about 12 gallons per person per day.

It’s easier than you think. Check with your water agency to see what rebates are available, to save water, money, and beautify your home!

that need plugged in. The limited program that utility companies have in place proves they can identify customers who have a medical need for backup power and build a distribution network to get them the devices. California’s public utilities should build on this program and expand it across the state to any consumer needing continuous medical device power.

Three Tips for Creating a Summer of Unplugged Fun

Between school, work, and entertainment, there are times when screens can seem like a pervasive part of modern life. Yet, for all the positive aspects of technology, children can also desire to have stretches of unplugged learning and participate in educational activities that do not require a screen.

Why Unplugged Learning Matters

“Unplugged learning is important to balance the screen time children may experience with other forms of learning; to promote physical activities, social interaction, and creativity; and develop the essential skills that bolster them throughout their exploration and growth as individuals,” said Rurik Nackerud from KinderCare’s education team.

Summer can be an ideal time to focus on unplugged learning as it often brings a break from the traditional academic year and activities.

“We want summer to be a time when children can

put down technology and connect face-to-face, build important creativity skills, and learn how to be social without the buffer of screens,” said Khy Sline from KinderCare’s education team. “They can play, run, be immature and laugh with their friends, giggle at the silly things and find joys in those in-person interactions with one another.”

Tips for Creating Unplugged Fun as a Family

1. Get Outdoors. Make time as a family to get outside and explore, even if it’s simply a walk around the block after dinner. Help children notice the little things like a bug on the sidewalk or how the sun filters through tree leaves to make patterns on the ground. Ask them about what they see, and give your children the space to ask questions and work together to find the answers. This helps teach children collaborative learning skills: asking questions, sharing ideas, and working together to reach a solution.

2. Read Together. This could mean visiting the library

to check out new books or exploring your family’s bookshelves for old favorites. Then, snuggle up together for family storytime. If children are old enough to read independently, invite them to read to you or their younger siblings. Please talk about the story or even act out their favorite parts to help your children actively participate in storytime, which may help them better understand

the story’s concepts.

3. Encourage Creative Thinking. Help children expand their thinking skills by working together to make a craft or project. For example, the next time a delivery box arrives at your home, encourage your children to turn it into something new using craft supplies. For example, a blanket could turn a box into a table for a pretend restaurant, while some tape or glue could

transform it into a rocket ship or train. When everyone’s done creating and playing, the box can be broken down for recycling. This activity can help children think outside the box and apply their unique ideas and creativity to create something new. Attract Backyard Birds with the Right Seeds

While almost all bird seeds may look the same to you, it doesn’t look to the birds you’re feeding, and knowing what kinds of sources different birds like can help you attract a variety of fine feathered friends to your feeders.

Consider these popular seed types and the common backyard birds they attract:

Sunflower: Black sunflower seeds attract

blue jays, goldfinches, woodpeckers, purple finches, chickadees, titmice, and nuthatches. Striped sunflower seeds appeal to chickadees, doves, grosbeaks, northern cardinals, nuthatches, titmice, and woodpeckers.

Sunflower hearts (also known as “hulled sunflower” and “sunflower chips”) attract chickadees, common redpolls, juncos, doves, finches, goldfinches, grosbeaks,

nuthatches, pine siskins, titmice and woodpeckers.

Nyjer: These lightweight, tiny seeds are a favorite of goldfinches. Put Nyjer seeds in a hanging feeder with little holes so the small seeds won’t get blown away. Nyjer attracts redpolls, juncos, doves, indigo bunting, and pine siskin.

Safflower: These white seeds are slightly smaller than black sunflower seeds. Because they are bitter, grackles, blue jays, starlings - and squirrels - don’t like

them. However, they attract doves, purple finches, chickadees, titmice, and downy woodpeckers.

White millet: Good for scattering on the ground, white millet attracts ground feeders such as juncos, sparrows, indigo buntings, towhees, and mourning doves.

Cracked corn: Popular with ground feeders, cracked corn appeals to doves, crows, jays, sparrows, juncos, and towhees. Avoid getting finely cracked corn

Face masks are strongly recommended.

Museum Hours: Tuesday through Saturday 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Sunday 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Tour Times: Every half hour from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m and 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

as it’s vulnerable to rot and can quickly turn mush. When choosing a birdseed mix, consider the ingredients list on the package. Bird seed is required by law to list ingredients in order of content. Some cheaper combinations have filler seeds such as wheat, red milo, red millet, or “assorted grain products.” Most backyard birds won’t eat those; your seed mix could be well-spent on the ground. Learn more about making your backyard an oasis for birds of all kinds at eLivingtoday.com.

Elizabeth McGovern in “Ava – The Secret Conversations”

Ava Gardner, born Ava Lavinia Gardner in the small town of Grabtown, North Carolina, eventually became one of the most stunning, talented actresses during the Golden Age of Hollywood. She married three of the most famous men of the era beginning with Mickey Rooney, followed by Artie Shaw and finally Frank Sinatra, whom she considered to be the love of her life. She also had a stormy relationship with Howard Hughes. Some of Miss Gardner’s most memorable films include Show Boat, The Snows of Kilimanjaro, Knights of the Round Table, The Barefoot Contessa, Bhowani Junction, The Sun Also Rises, On the Beach, The Cassandra Crossing, and Mogambo for which she received an Academy Award nomination. Putting together a theatrical

piece incorporating her life at one particularly challenging time is no easy task and yet Elizabeth McGovern not only wrote the compelling script, Ava: The Secret Conversation, based on the book by Ava Gardner and Peter Evans, but also assumes the role of one of the most iconic women of her time and delivers a tourde-force performance, digging deeply into Gardner’s psyche. You might remember McGovern most recently for her role as Lady Cora in the extraordinary “Downton Abbey” series where she played the steady guiding light of her sometimes dysfunctional family. These two characters couldn’t be further apart in their specific complexities, but McGovern nails the superstar Ava from the opening beat of the play.

Under Moritz von Stuelpnagel’s absolutely perfect

direction, we first meet Ava in her beautiful hotel suite nicely designed by David Meyer. She is recovering from a stroke and one hand is partially paralyzed. She has fallen on economic hard times and needing money, calls journalist Peter Evans, wonderfully played by Aaron Costa Ganis, to see if he would be interested in collaborating on her autobiography. She tells him it’s either sell her jewelry or write a book, adding “I’m sentimental about my jewelry.” The writer is rather awestruck by this famous movie star and it takes him a while to get over his enchantment with who she is and then the collaboration dance begins. Ava is unsure of exactly what she wants to reveal and tries skirting around parts of her life that she doesn’t wish to have incorporated into the book and

asks him if they could just make everything up. As Ava talks about her different husbands, beginning with Mickey Rooney, who she married at the age of 19, Costa Ganis seamlessly transitions into the different husbands depicting Rooney as a rather silly young man who insists that the gorgeous starlet marry him on their very first meeting. That marriage lasted a year, as did her marriage to Artie Shaw, who asked, “Do you mind if I go to Mexico and get a quickie divorce?” Ava reminisces about some of her films, referring to The Barefoot Contessa as “A piece of shit.” In between scenes with Ava, Peter discusses the project with his agent, Ed Victor, played by unseen actor Ryan W. Garcia, who gives him ongoing instructions on how to complete this book project. During the writing sessions, her language is sprinkled heavily with “f” bombs which she asks that her biographer remove from the book. During one of their conversations, Peter says, “Is it true you turned down the role of Mrs. Robinson?” She makes up an excuse as to why she made that choice. When the subject of Sinatra comes up, there are rear screen projections of the iconic singer designed by Alex Basco Koch, and we hear “Fly Me To The Moon.” Throughout the play, there are germane sound designs by the always spot-on Cricket S. Myers. When asked about what happened to that marriage, which lasted for six years, Ava confesses, “I couldn’t be the woman Frank wanted me to be.” Throughout this one-act play, dressed in Costume Designer Toni-Leslie’s exquisite costumes, and flattering lighting by Amith Chandrashaker, Ava drinks, smokes, and slithers about the stage like a cunning feline. The most talented Miss

McGovern mines the multiple complex layers of her character, capturing the irony and wit of this legend an example of which, while refilling her never-left empty glass of alcohol quips, “I feel sorry for people who don’t drink.” As Peter spends more and more time with her, he begins to examine his own life and comes to the conclusion that he is not happy and doesn’t even know what that feels like. While the emphasis is on Ava’s story, Peter Evans emerges as an equally interesting character with his own pathology and personality. This play is basically a twohander, but you couldn’t ask for a better pairing of actors to portray the complex life and times of one of the most revered Hollywood actresses culminating in an enchanting evening of theatre.

Nonprofits Press for Deal as They Fight Post-Pandemic Inequities

During the pandemic, nonprofits in Los Angeles took on the monumental task of helping feed, house, and vaccinate millions of Californians suddenly thrown out of work. A new report calls on the city to overhaul how it works with the nonprofit sector.

The Committee for Greater LA found that nonprofits need help to get paid on time for services rendered.

Efrain Escobedo, president and CEO of the Southern California Center for Nonprofit Management said the city’s and nonprofits’ relationship needs attention.

“While nonprofits have been playing this critical role, the way government contracts and treats nonprofits in these contracts is not strengthening that sector,” Escobedo explained. “It’s not helping them be better. It’s

not helping them reach more people. It’s simply more of an extractive relationship that overburdened a sector that has gone above and beyond.”

The report called on the new Mayor, Karen Bass, to reset the relationship with the nonprofit sector, which provides 23% of jobs in the city. In addition, the authors asked the town to start paying its bills on time, cut bureaucratic red tape, and consider funding projects up-front rather than asking nonprofits to provide services and then be reimbursed.

Escobedo noted that the Committee for Greater LA was formed to tackle crises during the pandemic, such as hunger, homelessness, poverty, and unequal access to affordable high-speed internet.

“The inequities that we were seeing right up in front, in our faces, during the pandemic,

are solvable,” Escobedo contended. “We did not want to just recover to the same state of affairs we were in

going into the pandemic.”

Mayor Bass, in a statement, said the city would not thrive if nonprofits were burdened

by unnecessary costs, red tape, and delays and vowed to work to improve the city’s relationship with the sector.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. If the sale occurs after 1/1/2021, the sale may not be final until either 15 or 45 days after the sale date - see Notice to Tenant. Further, no TDUS can be issued until the sale is final. Your bid is subject to being over bid by the Tenant or “eligible bidder” after the sale and if your bid is over bid, your only remedy is to the refund of your actual bid amount without interest or payment of any other costs, expenses or funds of any kind or nature incurred by the initial successor bidder. MDLT celebrates conservation wins

Joshua Tree, California

– The Mojave Desert Land Trust (MDLT) released its 2022 Annual Report on Friday. The publication celebrates significant conservation achievements while examining the region’s more considerable challenges.

The 2022 Annual Report outlines specific threats to the California desert and explains how the public can make a difference. To cultivate a spirit of hope at this critical juncture, MDLT reimagined Rosie the Riveter for the report cover. Essays and infographics outline how climate disruption and habitat loss impact critical species and how the community and MDLT can work together to ensure lasting protection for the desert and its immense biodiversity.

As a full-service land conservancy, MDLT employs a multifaceted approach to help ensure the long-term prosperity of the desert and the plants, animals, and people that rely on it.

MDLT’s 2022 conservation highlights include: Permanent protection of 6,983 acres of the California desert, including acquiring 640 acres in the Cadiz Valley at the heart of Mojave Trails National Monument and 232

acres in Death Valley National Park.

They achieved 100,000 native plants grown since 2016 - with 4,143 plants cultivated for restoration projects and community landscaping in 2022. In addition, over 2,200 plants were sold at MDLT’s Fall Native Plant and Salvage Sale, twice the number in previous in-person sales.

RELEASE MDLT celebrates conservation wins, outlines California desert challenges in Annual Report Volunteers provided over 1,000 hours of service for stewardship of MDLT lands, over 1,400 hours supporting plant conservation programs, and over 1,000 hours in outreach and education activities.

Staff and volunteers removed over 18 tons of trash from the desert habitat.

The Mojave Desert Seed Bank surpassed over 700 collections representing over 210 taxa – approximately 10% of the Mojave’s native species.

Across Southern California, 469 students participated in MDLT’s Desert Discovery Field Studies programming, exploring the California desert’s unique ecological and cultural values.

Interns with the Women In

Science Discovering Our Mojave (WISDOM) program provided longitudinal data about tamarisk beetles in Afton Canyon, a current management concern for the Bureau of Land Management in the lushest areas of Mojave Trails National Monument.

MDLT mobilized support for listing the western Joshua tree under the California Endangered Species Act, hosting a rally, petition, and email campaign.

“Here in the last relatively intact ecosystem in the United States, we stand at an important juncture if we want to save the California desert’s unique and rich biodiversity. Climate disruption is unleashing intense heat, drought, and uncertain precipitation. As a result, thousands of acres of desert habitat are fragmented and degraded yearly by current human activities, impacting key species. But we are here to fight for it. As a result, we made incredible progress in 2022, with nearly 7,000 acres protected and surpassing a new milestone of over 100,000 native plants grown

since 2016. We are confident that our multifaceted approach will help ensure the long-term
