BEST DENTAL OFFICE Dental Professionals, P.L.C. 200 N. B St., Indianola, 961-8411; 65 School St., Carlisle, 989-3180 Second place: Indianola Family Dentistry

Whether a Warren County resident has a tooth ache or just needs a regular cleaning, they can turn to Dental Professionals, PCC, of Indianola for care. The dental practice was established in 1962 by James Rundle in Indianola, with the addition of a satellite location in Carlisle to help serve patients in that community. Patients receive preventive dental care, periodontal treatment, radiographs, silver and tooth-colored fillings, oral surgery, restorations like crowns and veneers, cosmetic dentistry, extractions, and partial and complete dentures. “We have wonderful patients. Many have been coming here for years and have become part of our ‘extended family,’” said Gary Jacobsen. “Without our patients, we have nothing. The manner in which they are treated is our highest priority. We look forward to meeting new patients and welcoming them to our growing family.” There are 23 employees at Dental Professionals, PLC, who regularly receive compliments about their professionalism and high level of customer care. “Each member of our staff works hard to provide quality care and service. We strive to make our patients comfortable and at ease while ensuring that they maintain optimal dental health,” Jacobsen said. The dental practice also reaches out to help in the community, including sponsoring Indianola and Carlisle high school activities, as well as Simpson College.

MICHAEL ROLANDS/RECORD-HERALD

Dr. Jerry Lehr with The Iowa Clinic was voted Best Family Doctor.

Local eatery Funaro’s has roots dating back to 1996 when Greg and Sondra Funaro started their business, serving sandwiches, soups, cookies, cinnamon rolls and other delicious breakfast pastries, which has earned the family the Best of Sub Sandwiches title this year. Rose Houston, daughter of the Funaros, and her husband, Bryant, bought the business in January 2016. With the help of five employees, Funaro’s serves lunch with a menu full of premium meats and cheeses sliced daily with the meat and salads prepared in house. “A new menu features an array of Funaro’s specialties with new homemade sauces, from the chipotle club and triple pork to delicious hot subs like the meatball and homemade Italian beef. We, of course, kept all the classics like Sondra’s cookies, egg and chicken salad recipes and Greg’s delicious cinnamon rolls and Danish in the mornings,” Bryant Houston said. People love the fact that Funaro’s is family owned with quality food and friendly service. “I have great employees that help make all customers feel welcome and do a great job showing first-timers what makes our food stand out from others. We know a majority of the customers by name and enjoy seeing their faces on a regular basis. As an owner, I appreciate customers taking a minute of their time to ask me how my day’s going or what’s new in my life. It makes the job that much better,” Houston said. Funaro’s also offers catering for special events like weddings, graduation parties, company gatherings and other outings. Houston said he hopes to expand the business to offer additional seating and have a larger kitchen. “This is our second year receiving the Best Sub Sandwiches in Warren County and I would like to attribute that to our fresh, quality ingredients. Cooking the meats in-house and baking the fresh hoagies every morning for the subs are a couple of the things that help keep the quality level up where it needs to be,” Houston said.

BEST CHIROPRACTIC OFFICE 10-Year Winner Drees Family & Sports Chiropractic 214 W. Salem Ave, Indianola, 515-961-5202 www.dreeschiropractic.com Second place: Crain Chiropractic Clinic

For more than a decade, doctors Cory and Laura Drees have been tending to area residents’ overall well-being and chiropractic needs at their clinic, Drees Family & Sports Chiropractic. They recently were named Best of Warren County. With five employees, the staff at the clinic offer one-on-one personal care to everyone who walks through their door. Not only are the Drees chiropractors, but

Laura Drees is certified in acupuncture and Cory Drees is the team chiropractor for Simpson College Athletics and the Indianola High School football team. He also is a certified strengthening and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and is a certified chiropractic sports physician. “We believe people come to our office, because we truly care about the health of our patients,” said Laura Drees. “It’s very rewarding to see a person change from being in pain and unhealthy to pain-free.” As the Drees look toward the future, they hope their office continues to grow, which could possibly include moving into a larger location and hiring additional staff to ensure the seamless care of patients.

BEST PLACE TO GET A CUP OF COFFEE Mudslinger’s Drive-Thru Coffee 504 N. Jefferson Way, 961-2200 Second place: Uncommon Grounds Coffee House & Deli

Warren County residents relish the warm and cold beverages available at Mudslingers, along with the enticing desserts and baked goods. Mudslingers has been named Best Place to get a Cup of Coffee for 2016. Just last November, current owners Brett and Kinda Miller bought Mudslingers from previous owners Carrie Kaster and Dennis Hosey.

Kaster and Hosey opened the shop five years ago. “We sell coffee, lattes, smoothies, frappes, muffins and mishmash cookies,” Brett Miller said. This summer, the shop will begin offering iced tea and fresh squeezed lemonade, too. Just in time for warm weather. Customers love stopping by the store to see what new drinks and goodies are available. “We love seeing all of the customers every day,” Miller said. “We have great products and service with a smile. We strive to put out consistent, quality products with a smile and a thank you.”

BEST DANCE/GYMNASTIC STUDIO Indianola Dance Academy 207 West Salem Ave., Indianola, 515-783-9673 ; www.indianoladanceacademy.com Second place: The Dance Factory

Girls and boys ages 3 to 13 love learning dance and other modalities at Indianola Dance Academy, which was voted Best Dance/Gymnastic Studio for Warren County. The dance academy started in 2009 under the umbrella of the Indianola Park and Recreation Department, then split off and became a separate business entity in 2013. Owner and teacher Jessica Eginoire relies on six employees to help instruct dancers and baton twirlers while developing a love of the fine arts. “Working with young dancers has brought me so much joy. I love seeing their faces light up when they learn new tricks and they master skills,” Eginoire said. Students at the studio can learn baton, hip-hop, tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical and pom. Classes are open to both boys and girls ages 3 to 13. “We are an inclusive studio and work to accept students of all shapes and sizes and do not turn families away based on their financial situations. We also offer competition and recreational classes,” Eginoire said. “The majority of our older students have been with the studio over six years. We keep costs as low as

we can by not marking costumes or shoes up as other studios do. To help students whose families cannot afford to participate, our studio offers scholarships.” Last summer, dancers at the studio were thrilled when Jordan Willis and two other choreographers hosted a hip-hop clinic there at the studio. “We also had Allison Arnold-Kempers come twirl in the balloon parade and gave a clinic to our twirlers on baton and tricks. Allison is an Iowa State alum, who twirled with me when we were young girls and who lives in Indiana now as a teacher and baton judge,” Eginoire said. Eginoire credits her dance family for the success the studio has enjoyed in the past several years. “I sincerely care about every student that walks in the door. When we have families with deaths in the family, serious illnesses and injuries, it affects us all. IDA is a second home to our twirlers and many of the parents. Without the genuine connection the staff and I have made with all the families, I do not think we would be as successful as we are,” she said.

Thanks for your votes and support! • Drive thru for our delicious drinks! • Served both hot and cold. Also try our fresh treats. • Great location and fast service for your commute to work or during the day!

Winn’s Pizza and Steakhouse has been a fixture on the Indianola square for more than 10 years, drawing diners from all across the county and beyond. The eatery became such a popular place to eat, that the owners opened a second location in Norwalk slightly more than a year ago. Situated on the north side of The Square, Winn’s is family owned and operated. In fact, you will often find Nguyen Winn himself behind the counter preparing meals. At Winn’s, each customer’s satisfaction is top priority. “We are truly grateful for each and every customer that walks through

the door. We want to make sure they are happy and keep coming back,” Winn said. “Our customers are the best in the world.” In addition to the famous pizzas and steak topping the menu, Winn’s offers a full salad bar, authentic gyros, handmade egg rolls and crab rangoon, ribs, chicken, fish and other sandwiches. Daily specials are offered for lunch and dinner that differ slightly between the two locations. They also have a party room available for larger gatherings. One of the busiest places in Warren County happens to be the Indianola YMCA where members and visitors of all ages enjoy swimming, exercising, yoga and other fun fitness activities. The Indianola YMCA even hosts the Healthy Kids, Families Expo and an indoor triathlon for youth. One of its wildly popular programs, SNL!, offers a safe place for students in grades fifth through eighth to gather and have fun with positive adult role models. Of course, it takes a number of people to operate such a sizable facility. There are 125 employees, primarily part-time. The facility officially opened in August 2013. The online conveniences banking customers have become accustomed to didn’t exist when Peoples Bank opened in Indianola in 1998. Lending services feature personal, auto, mortgage, business and agriculture loans tailored to fit the needs of customers. “Banking was and still is, built on relationships; the convenience of technology is only a tool for us. We get to know each other well and often continue to stay in touch for years after the transaction,” Bishop said. “The majority of my clients are repeat clients or referrals from previous and I feel blessed to have such loyal clients.” Being active in the community is essential to Bishop, too. “It’s important to care about and be a part of the community. I enjoy helping and giving back through volunteerism with projects and on committees with the schools, athletics, city and church,” she said.

BEST PRESCHOOL/ CHILD CARE 10-Year Winner Indianola Preschool, Inc. 205 S. Howard St., Suite B, Indianola; 515-961-3798 Second place: Victory Christian Academy

MICHAEL ROLANDS/RECORD-HERALD

Justin Woosley and his crew at Woosley Landscaping & Mowing won Best Lawn Care Service.

BEST HOME BUILDER 10-Year Winner Downing Construction, Inc. 2500 W. 2nd Ave., 961-5386 Second place: Construction by Cambron LLC

For almost 50 years, Downing Construction has served the central Iowa area as a contractor, first as a residential contractor then transitioning over to a general “turn-key” contract and design/build company specializing in commercial, industrial and residential construction with clients across the state.

As a design/build contractor, Downing Construction adheres to the “total project management” philosophy. Downing experts will develop parcels, carry construction financing, lease facilities and design/build a facility. Downing Construction stands out from the competition with its team of construction engineers and experienced staff members. “The most enjoyable part of our business is working with clients, developing relationships and the contributions they make to clients and a community, whether it’s expanding or building a new structure,” the owners said.

More than half of a century ago, First United Methodist Church members launched a nursery school that eventually evolved into a preschool class that educates little ones today. This year, Indianola Preschool has been named the Best of Preschool/Child Care. As the longest running preschool in the state of Iowa, Indianola Preschool started out in the First United Methodist Church, the program for local tots moved to Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. It relocated again in 1979 to Redeemer Lutheran Church to accommodate for growing class sizes. Then in 1982, the program moved again to First Baptist Church due to the need for even more space. Finally, in 1986, the preschool set down roots in its current facility where it had its own home. “Children are the best part of this job – hands down. The preschool years are a magical time when children love to learn, change and grow every day. We are thankful to be a part of it,” said co-director Kim Neessen. “The families of Indianola and community support is what has kept IPS strong for such a long time.” Eight teachers help mold the minds of the busy preschoolers. The school received a top score of “level 5” in a quality rating system used by the Iowa Department of Human Services,

showing the teachers’ dedication to educating their students. “No other preschool in Warren County has achieved a level 5,” Neessen said. “Our mission is to provide a safe, developmentally appropriate learning environment for preschool-aged children. We provide a meaningful experience that promotes social/emotional, physical, cognitive and language development. Caring and capable teachers nurture each child’s natural desire to learn. We value and encourage an active partnership between home and school.” The community apparently agrees that this preschool is top-notch, as it has won Best of Warren County Preschool for the past nine years. The teachers also have incorporated technology into their teaching methods, including iPads obtained through a grant. They even participated in a study about preschoolers and technology administered by Iowa State University. As they look forward to the future, the preschool’s leaders do not lose sight of their historic past. “We hosted a 60th community birthday party last year at the preschool. We invited the community to come join with us as we reflected on the past, reviewed our present success and celebrated together,” Neessen said.

Fareway in Carlisle was voted Best Carlisle Business in Warren County.

Nestled on 65 acres of pasture ground and woodlands sits Two Saints Winery, a family-owned winery established in 2006 that earned the title of Best Winery in Warren County. Four employees help care for the 10.5 acres of grapevines, which were planted in 2003 and 2004. “It was quite a learning process, but has been interesting and fulfilling for us. We sell most of our wines at our current location and do have wines in several Hy-Vee, Casey’s and other retail outlets, said Christine Carlton. “Here you can actually visualize what an Iowa vineyard looks like and appreciate that we make our wines from Iowa-grown grapes. Gary Edgington serves as the expert winemaker, coaxing delightful flavors from the grapes, then running them through the wine-making process. “Gary is always tweaking the wines to bring the best to our customers, Carlton said. “We also host live music events on Sunday afternoons from 2 to 5 p.m. beginning in June and continuing through September. We are continually educating our customers on our wines and the process of making wine. We conduct ‘Wine 101’ classes in the winter and have several other activities throughout the year. Other amenities include nature walking trails being created there. “Our woodlands are full of beautiful trees, flowers, wetlands and creatures. It’s peaceful to take some time out of a busy hectic life and enjoy nature’s beauty, she said. At Two Saints Winery, guests will

find a diverse variety of wines that appeal to all palettes. “We have one of the largest selections of dry red wines in the state, as well as lovely sweet and semi-sweet wines, Carlton said. “Our original ‘Wine Mojitos’ have become extremely popular. We have been successful, because we treat each customer like a treasured friend, enjoy visiting with them and answering any questions they may have. “The beautiful views of our vineyards from our deck have been described as ‘Napa-esque’ by our customers, she added. While the owners stay busy creating a warm, welcoming and interesting environment for their guests, they, too, enjoy the experience of owning a winery. “We enjoy meeting and conversing with our customers, and informing them about our processes, wines and our beautiful facility. We try to make sure that everyone who enters our doors has a memorable experience and wants to come back for another great time, Carlton said.

Burger King was voted Best Fast Food in Warren County.

For eight years, Busy Bee Garden Center has been abuzz with green thumbs seeking beautiful plants, flowers and landscaping greenery. The business has been named Best of Garden Center. It takes 20 employees to operate the facility, which is owned by Chelsey Soder and Tyler Flinn. It opened in 2008 south of the middle school, then moved to its current location. “We went from 1,800 square feet to 20,000 square feet,” Soder said. While the garden center sells annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, trees and shrubs, they go above and beyond simply stocking a few varieties. “For example, we sell geraniums, but we don’t just have a few different colors, we have more than 30,” she said.

Not only does Busy Bee Garden Center call Indianola home, but they treat central Iowans to their products by selling produce at the Downtown Des Moines Farmer’s Market every Saturday from May to October. They also offer landscaping services. Soder and Flinn plan to add more greenhouses and grow even more plants at their location. “You truly can’t find the quality of plants we sell at the price we sell them at anywhere around the Indianola area. We always try to exceed at customer service and go above and beyond to make sure everyone’s experience is a good on,” Soder said. “I enjoy the fact that every day is a different day and no two days are the same. We have a great group of loyal customers who have helped us grow through the years and we look forward to seeing them throughout the season.” Most everyone recognizes the duo from their jovial and jesting TV commercials where Soder tells Flinn regular to “get back to work” or “you better be working.” “I love when random people tell Tyler to get back to work,” she said.

Chumbleys Auto Care has quite the history in Indianola, dating back to 1957. But today, the automotive service has been named Best of Warren County. Current owner Tim Davison bought into the business in 1999 after Wilbur Chumbley ran it since 1957, retiring shortly before Davison came on board. The business originally sold fuel and offered vehicle repair services, then added 24-hour towing service and a Conoco farm tank wagon service, which eventually they did away with. Today, Chumbley’s Auto Care offers the pick up and delivery of vehicles, including a local shuttle, as well as light towing, vehicle unlocking, fuel delivery, inflating tires, washing windows and

Chumbleys uses original equipment parts and well-known name brand lines. “In a city of 15,000 people and 20 repair facilities, competition is pretty strong. BEST TOWING COMPANY Aubert’s Towing 406 E. Euclid Ave., 961-8525, fax 515-962-0545, Facebook @ Aubert’s Towing 1 Second place: Tomin Towing & Automotive

Since 1995, Warren County residents have turned to Aubert’s Towing for local and long distance towing services and other emergency vehicle needs, which is why the business was named the Best Towing Company for Warren County. Current owner Tim Nelson bought the business from Bob Aubert, who ran it for eight years. Nelson currently operates the business with AJ Aubert. “We strive to be professional and courteous at the time of service. Most of the time when people need our help, they aren’t having a very good day. We show up in a timely manner, with a smile, and try and change that,” AJ Aubert said. With two employees, Aubert’s

Towing offers not just towing, but lockout service, tire changes, jump starts and recoveries/accidents. They also sell Sunoco Race Fuels. “Aubert’s Towing has been involved in racing and has sponsored many race cars and teams that race at the Warren County Speedway here in Indianola,” Nelson said. “We have also sponsored various school sports, including the Indianola Trap Team and the Indianola Rugby Club.” Nelson credited their Warren County customers for their successful business history. “We enjoy helping customers in their time of need and meeting new people. We have the greatest customers in Warren County,” he said.
