ptometry is in the genes at Optometric Associates. Dr. Craig Winjum is the second in his family to be in the eye care business at 225 W. Ashland Ave. His father, Ken Winjum, opened the business in 1965. Over the years, they added locations, opening in Carlisle in 1980 and in Norwalk in 1990. The key to their success and growth over the years has been a “genuine concern for our patients,” Craig Winjum said. “We are constantly upgrading available products like digital lenses, one-day disposable contacts and new and ever-changing frame styles.” Winjum said the company has made significant investments in both equipment and facilities this year. Three doctors now work with the practice: Winjum, Dr. Jonathan Anderson and Dr. Michael O’Meara. All three share a commitment to their patients, Winjum said. “We are committed to Warren County and want to keep our focus here,” he said. “Our success comes from the long-term commitment of our staff and doctors, but also from a very loyal patient base.”

uality Plumbing and Heating has been doing business since 1977. Although the business has new owners, it has the same location and many of the same customers it has had for years. Joe Greubel now owns the business, while Lisa Cooney manages the office. Greubel bought the business from Ken and Lila Ruch, who owned it for more than 25 years. They sell and install Rheem Heating and Cooling equipment, sell and install Delta plumbing supplies and service all brands of equipment. Greubel says his personable and cheerful office staff contribute to the success of his business. “We listen to customers, to their needs and wants,” he said. “We provide timely estimates and service as well as well-known suppliers, reasonable rates and longevity of service. “I really enjoy our customers,” he added. “We have a great community and the best staff around.” Quality now employs seven people, but Greubel said he will add staff as needed to support his customers.

fter five years in the hauling industry, Mike and Sarah Rosenberger felt there was a need for a local trash service in Indianola. So they started one in October 2011. Today, the pair have two employees and provide residential trash service within Indianola and the surrounding rural areas. They also offer commercial trash and recycling within Indianola. They say they have been impressed at how their dedication to their customers has been repaid. “Our business has been successful because of our customers,” Sarah Rosenberger said. “The residents of Indianola and Warren County show great respect and patronage for our local companies.” She said they work diligently to “provide friendly and dependable service” to their customers. That has been reciprocated by customers who refer others to their services. “We feel that our locally owned company serving our local community is definitely a win-win,” she said.

he Sports Page Grill is a full-scale bar and grill that keeps customers coming back with its burgers — a menu staple. “We offer a variety of burgers from just a good old-fashioned hamburger to our best-selling burger, the zesty ranch burger,” said Joe Ripperger, who owns the restaurant with his wife, Amanda. The two purchased the Indianola restaurant, along with Sports Pages in Pella, Winterset and Ankeny and the Brickhouse Tavern on The Square in Indianola, in 2012. The full-service bar also caters to families and kids. With 17 televisions, there’s plenty for sports fans of all ages to enjoy. Ripperger said they are proud of the support they offer local schools and athletic teams, from USSSA baseball teams to Simpson College. In 2012, the annual Sports Page Golf Outing raised more than $17,000 for the Indianola Athletic Boosters. Ripperger said they plan to introduce a new menu in the next few weeks.

utside Scoop in Indianola is about much more than chocolate and vanilla. Apple crisp, blueberry lemonade, and chocolate Oreo cookie dough are just a few of the crazily delicious ice cream flavors the business offers at the Indianola location, said Joe Doering, owner. The ice cream is all premium small batch, made-fromscratch ice cream. “No fro yo reconstituted from a powder or bland soft-serve offered here,” he said. Doering opened in 2010, serving from a trailer, and then in 2011 moved to his current location at 602 N. Jefferson Way. They also serve ice cream at the Valley Junction Farmers Market on Thursdays from 4 to 8 p.m., and will have a pushcart at the new Hub Spot on the Des Moines Riverwalk beginning in mid-June. In addition, 15 Hy-Vee stores in the Des Moines area sell pints of their ice cream. “Our scrumptious ice cream keeps customers coming back,” said Doering.

ndianola Preschool may be the longest-running preschool in the state of Iowa, but it’s working hard to stay up to date on what it offers students. The preschool began in 1955 as a nursery school at the First United Methodist Church. Later, the school moved to Mount Calvary Lutheran Church and offered more structured 3- and 4-year-old classes. In 1979, the program moved to Redeemer Lutheran and moved again in 1982 to First Baptist Church. In 1986, the school settled in its current location. “We offer a true preschool experience with developmentally appropriate practices, field trips, special guests and much more, said Kim Neesen, the preschool director. “We provide that positive first step toward your child’s educational future. The best thing about the school, says Neesen, is the children and their families. “We have tremendous family support here, and it’s a great thing for children to see that home-school connection.

oing to the dentist rarely seems like fun, but the staff at Indianola Family Dentistry is working to change all that. “Life is too short not to have fun and that involves work, said Dr. Michael Lindeberg, owner of the practice. “We have a lot of fun at work. A lot of laughing going on for a dental office. Lindeberg practiced dentistry in Oregon before moving to Indianola in 2008 after purchasing the practice from Dr. Dave Zaborac, who had owned it since 1982. In October of 2012 the business moved from 212 N. Buxton St. to its new location in Summercrest Hills north of Indianola. Lindeberg and Zaborac provide a range of services from cosmetics and Invisalign to working with children and, of course, the basic fillings and crowns. Lindeberg said he enjoys seeing customers who have been coming in for decades. “It’s great when the patients feel like they are our friends, and they in turn refer friends and family ... “I really try to take any fear out of going to the dentist by having fun and making the patient experience enjoyable, he added. “I want patients to like going to the dentist.

hen Miller Pest & Termite LLC first opened in 2001, people were most concerned about termite treatments, inspections and pest control, said owner Jerry Miller. About five years ago, treating for bed bugs moved to the top of the priority list. Miller said he hopes to hire additional employees to handle the influx of bed bug treatments. Providing quick service at a good price is key, said Miller. The company often bids pest control and bed bug projects over the phone. When Realtors call for pricing on termite control, they are usually able to provide a price within about 10 minutes. The company also places a premium on doing the right thing. “Our goal is to provide the best service, and do the right service for our customers,” said Miller. “We study and keep up with new treatments. We use an all-green service for bed bugs and guarantee the service for one year.” He said they really enjoy working with the customers and supporting the community, including sponsoring local teams at the Indianola and Martensdale-St. Marys high schools.

ob Keller of Country Financial says the combination of local service and national resources is vital to his customers. “We provide our customers with a tangible plan for their future financial security here at the local level, while being backed by a team of experts at the corporate level, he said. Country Financial has been working with families for more than 80 years. Keller began working with Country in West Des Moines in 2006. In 2008, he reopened the Indianola office. Keller, through Country Financial, offers insurance and investment solutions that “protect the things that are most important, like your family, your home, your child’s education and your retirement dreams. Keller said that he is working with families at all stages of financial planning. “No matter where you are starting from, you’ll get advice that lays out your choices and provides solutions to help you achieve your idea of financial security, he said.

ark work and patience are the tools that Jake Doering has used most since founding his lawn and landscaping business back in 1999. That has paid off in a good reputation and a growing business. “I believe we’ve gained a reputation for providing quality lawn and landscape services, said Doering. “The business sustains itself, which oddly enough, sets it apart. Doering provides everything from commercial and residential lawn care to commercial snow and ice removal services. He designs, builds, installs and maintains retaining walls, patios and landscapes. In addition, he said, the business does grading, sodding and tiling systems. Doering said he plans to continue to fine-tune the business, particularly as the competition grows in numbers. He said his involvement in every facet of the business has been key to its success, along with the many relationships the company has built over the last 13 years. “We provide a quality service at a fair price, he said.

Julie Gorsche and her husband, David, bought their first Subway franchise in 1990. They opened their first store in 1991, and since then have moved their main store across the street and opened two additional locations, one in Wal-Mart in Indianola and the other in Norwalk. Subway food fills an important niche for people, said Julie Gorsche. “We have a high-quality, fresh healthy food in a fast-food environment,” she said. Subway’s emphasis on fresh and healthy food has helped drive the dialogue about how to eat better, she added. “About four years ago we came out with a Fresh Fit value meal,” said Julie. “We offer fresh fruit and yogurt instead of chips and cookies. We still have the chips and cookies, but it’s a personal choice. “It’s recently become much more popular, but it’s always been a need.” Julie said the local store actively supports local teams and groups. “We want to support the things our customers care about,” she said. amily friendly is the name of the game for FISS’, located in Carlisle for the last 18 years. But the business is also friendly to other families. “We fill a need for a fun, family-friendly gathering place with good food and great ice cream, said Tom Thiel. The menu ranges from hot subs to cold ice cream, and everything in between, including tacos, soups, salads, cookies and pie. “We just offer fresh food fast, and provide great customer service and we have a fun atmosphere, Thiel said. The Carlisle Chamber of Commerce named FISS’ the 2012 member of the year, recognizing its ongoing support of countless local organizations. FISS’ also is a first job for many of the young people in the community, who then go on to successful careers, but “remember their first job at FISS’ as a wonderful learning experience, the chamber said in its annual awards dinner program.

“Real food is what Barb Martsching says has kept customers coming back to One Stop over 31 years and four locations. “Everything is homemade and made in-house, she said. That hasn’t changed since she opened her business in 1982 in what is now the parking lot of Farm Bureau on Iowa Highway 92. From there, she hopped to the corner of Iowa and Jefferson avenues before moving to The Square, where her building collapsed. She has been located at 903 E. Second Ave. ever since. The menu features a tenderloin, ribbon fries and homemade onion rings and soups, along with the mainstay — a fluffy flour taco. The customers have kept Martsching loving her business, along with enjoying the cooking. Now, Martsching says she would like to expand her “comfort food options, but also is looking at retirement as an option. “I’m looking for someone who might want to take it over, she said.

he National Balloon Classic has been an Iowa tradition for more than 40 years. From July 26 to Aug. 3, approximately 100 hot air balloonists will compete for points and wow close to 90,000 spectators during the 2013 Classic. The Classic has its roots in the National Balloon Championship, which took off in Indianola in 1970 and called the community home for 18 years. In 1989, the Classic took over the tradition of sport ballooning in the community. Staci Scheurenbrand took over as executive director of the event this year. She says she has high expectations for the Classic.

“I want to grow and develop the Classic to its full potential, while staying true to its roots,” said Scheurenbrand. “The National Balloon Classic is the claim to fame in Warren County. Ask anyone who travels. Oftentimes when one mentions they are from Indianola, the response is the same: “That’s where you have the balloon event!” Scheurenbrand said the Classic owes its success to the many volunteers and sponsors who put on the event every year. “With them comes a wealth of knowledge and experience,” she said. “With an outstanding team like that, anything is possible.”

achel Hall opened Indianola Glass Creations just two years ago, and she is already growing her business. She is expanding into a space next to her original shop which will house a paint your own pottery business. That expands her original offerings of glass products and classes on how to create stained glass, fused glass and jewelry. Her focus, though, continues to be on providing customers a great place to find a one-of-a-kind gift. “We make very unique pieces,” she said. “We try to make it so no two pieces are the same. I think people like that what they are getting is one of a kind, and also our prices are very reasonable.” While the range of products the shop offers has grown, the dedication to customers hasn’t changed, said Hall. “I like talking to the people,” she said. “I like getting to know them and finding out that they really enjoy our classes and our products. They like what we have enough to keep coming back.”

quality website is only one of the many tools Iowa Realty provides its clients, says Korey McKasson, the branch office coordinator at Indianola’s Iowa Realty office. While many clients use the Web to search for homes, the real benefit of working with Iowa Realty is the customer service offered by the agents who serve those clients. Iowa Realty opened in Indianola in 1976 with a location on The Square. Later, a second location opened in U.S. Highway 65/69. The two merged in 1989 at the current site. Nineteen agents now serve clients at the location, along with one administrative person. “We bring buyers and sellers together to facilitate a successful real estate transaction,” said Barb McMurry, broker for the office. “Our company has been a leader in the real estate market, and the customer service provided by our agents forges relationships for life with our clients.”

Best Place to Get a Cup of Coffee UNCOMMON GROUNDS 111 W. Salem Ave., 961-9681 Second place: Mudslingers

ncommon Grounds is more than a place to get a cup of coffee. In the eight years that Melanie Abbott has owned the business, she has expanded and changed the menu. Today, the coffee shop has expanded beyond coffees to offer tea, lattes, espresso, smoothies, cookies, deli sandwiches, soups, wraps and salads. The wide variety of menu options is driven by the businesses’ “loyal customers,” she said. “Without the customers we wouldn’t have a business,” said Abbott. “They’re great all-around people. Even when new businesses come into town, they may try it, but they stick with us.” Customers also provide important input to help shape the shop’s menu. Abbott and manager Madonna VandeKamp may get ideas for menu items from food shows or supplies, but customers decide the fate of those items. “We try it out on our customers and we go on feedback,” said Abbott. “If they like it we keep it, and if they don’t, we try something different.”

reat course conditions, a full-service pro shop and excellent dining opportunities keep members coming back to the Indianola Country Club, says Jason Marvelli, PGA golf professional at the club. And it’s not for members only. The club offers a lunch menu on Tuesday through Saturday that is open to the public and a large banquet room is available to the public for private events. Members enjoy PGA golf instruction, leagues for both men and women and golf tournaments throughout the year offered to all skill levels. A full-service pro shop and a large junior golf following keep the club busy all year. Plans call for continued improvements, with a new practice facility on Country Club Road and new irrigation on the original nine, along with new cart paths already added. Members hope to update the course and are working toward clubhouse improvements and replacement. The club serves as the home course for teams from both Indianola High School and Simpson College. “Our customers keep coming back because of the experience they get every time they visit the club,” said Marvelli.

etails Plus Collision Center is Warren County’s first choice for auto body and collision repair. Allen and Debbie Benesh opened the business in 1995 and now provide everything from repairing dings and dents to repairing major collision damage, deer damage and windshield repair. Debbie Benesh says they understand that accidents happen. Every year from October to December, they run a “hit a deer, win a turkey” promotion for customers. When that happens, she said, customers need the outstanding customer service that Details Plus provides, she said. That great customer service helps keep their business successful, she said. “We really enjoy helping our customers get their lives back after being in an accident,” she said.

owning Construction Inc. was founded in 1966 by D. Robert (Bob) Downing, who started with one 8-by-20-foot trailer, one employee and two trucks. By the end of his first year, he had built five houses and a fourplex apartment building in Indianola. While Denis Frischmeyer took over as president of the company in 2010, Downing Construction has continued to build and grow. Home construction continues to be a vital part of the business, said Frischmeyer, but when housing permits fell in the 1980s, the company started to look at other opportunities. Downing first turned to prefabricated metal buildings, and then built its commercial construction business. Downing Construction is proud of its history and excited about its future, said Frischmeyer. The team of 25 staff members is committed to understanding its clients’ needs and giving superior customer service.

n 1985, Gene and Elanor Smith of Indianola organized a group of local business and community leaders to help bring a continuing care retirement community to Indianola. In September of 1991, their dream became reality. And it began to grow. Today, the Village is a campus for healthy living, offering residents options including independent living apartments and townhomes, assisted living apartments and a five-star health center that includes a secured dementia-specific household. More than 220 people live in the various housing options at the Village. Julia Fitzhugh, sales director, says the campus prides itself on offering a wellness-based environment. “We empower people to be healthy, engaged and energized

Second, having family involved in the operation. “They know how the restaurant has been run over the years, and it is in their blood, she said. Rhonda Crouse says people like the cafe for what it is: “They like the simpler things she said. “Or what they remember from when they were young.
