Jokes Paddy and Charles walk into a bakery. Charles steals 3 buns and puts them in his pockets and leaves. He says to Paddy "That took great skill and guile to steal those buns. The owner didn't even see me." Paddy replied "That's just simple thievery, I'll show you how to do it the honest way and get the same results." Paddy then proceeded to call out the owner of the bakery and says "Sir, I want to show you a magic trick." The owner was intrigued so he came over to see the magic trick. Paddy asked him for a bun and then he proceeded to eat it. He asked 2 more times and after eating them as well the owner says "Ok my friend, where's the magic trick?". Paddy then said "Look in my friend's pockets."

Jim has been in Sao Paulo Brazil since 1969 and is a well known human rights activist in the favelas of Jardim Angela.. He is originally from Clonlara, Co.Clare to where he returns every summer for a short break. He was central to the formation of a community police system in the 1990s which helped reduce the death rates. The education system of Brazil was compared to Irelands’ and everybody was glad they don’t have to rely on four hours at night in much overcrowded classes! Fr. Jim emphasised how ordinary people can have extraordinary effects if they work together towards a common goal.

RSA Expresses Concern Over Driver Attitudes to Tyre Safety The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has expressed concern at driver attitudes to tyre safety, as a survey conducted by the Authority has revealed that 1 in 8 drivers (14%) have bought partworn tyres in the past. The survey of 1,000 motorists, conducted in November 2014, also showed that motorists are not checking their tyres regularly, despite knowing how to do it. 8 out of 10 (79%) drivers stated that they know how to check the air pressure of their tyres, yet 1 in 10 check this less than once a year or not at all. Similarly, 1 in 8 drivers check the condition and tread depth of their tyres less than once a year or not at all, despite 72% of drivers knowing how to perform this important check. Tyre safety, child safety and cycling safety were the focus of this year’s ‘Irish Road Safety Week’. Speaking at the launch of ‘Irish Road Safety Week’, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Paschal Donohoe TD said: “’Irish Road Safety Week’ is an important event in the road safety calendar as it gives us an opportunity to review our behaviour on the roads. If we all looked at how we use the roads every day, I have no doubt that we would find room for improvement. So this week, consider what small change you could make to make the roads safer for yourself and others. In particular, as the weather starts to get that bit colder, I would urge road-users to ensure they check their tyres regularly. Tyres are the only thing between you and the road, so it is critical that they are in good condition and that the tread depth and air pressure are checked regularly.” The RSA is reminding road-users that roadworthy tyres must be the right type and size for the vehicle, be properly inflated, free from defects and have a tread depth of at least 1.6mm. Chief Superintendent Mark Curran An Garda Síochána said: “Tyres are the only part of your vehicle that separate you from the road so it is critical that they are in roadworthy condition at all times. We would encourage everyone to avail of the free tyre check and ensure they are up to standard, particularly as winter approaches.” Ms Moyagh Murdock, Chief Executive of the Road Safety Authority said:

“We are concerned with the level of part worn tyres being used on vehicles, some are on sale for as little as 10 euro. When you consider that tyres are your only contact with the road, you really have to ask yourself is this the value you place on your family’s life?” “The RSA are currently finalising a report, based on an analysis of forensic data that shows the quality of tyres plays a much bigger role in fatal collisions than previously thought. So it is really worrying that people are not prioritising safety when they purchase tyres. Your safety, along with the safety of your passengers and other road users, could depend directly on the condition of your vehicle’s tyres. If you drive with tyres in poor condition, you really are putting your life at risk. You may save a few euro in the short-term, but at what price? Get them checked and give yourself and your passengers the peace of mind that you’re travelling safely.” Moyagh added. Mr Paddy Murphy, Acting President of the ITIA said: “It is important to keep our car and its tyres in top condition, yet many of us don’t make it a priority. As winter approaches and the weather starts to get worse, it really is critical that your tyres are in the best condition possible. If you are unsure what to do or how to check them a simple 5-minute visit to a local ITIA tyre outlet is all it takes to get your tyres checked for free to ensure they are safe. To find your local ITIA member visit www.itia.ie It’s important to remember safe tyres – saves lives. Ms Moyagh Murdock, Chief Executive of the Road Safety Authority encouraged people to play their part in keeping our roads safe from death and injury “To date this year, 119people have died on our roads, 20 fewer than the same period last year. We can all play a role in keeping our roads safe by changing our behaviour for the better. Small changes can make a huge difference, for example, reducing your speed, making sure you and your passengers are safely restrained in the car, or keeping your vehicle, motorcycle or bicycle in roadworthy condition at all times. So this week, think about what you can do to be a better, safer driver and play your part in reducing deaths and serious injuries on our roads.”

Courtesy of www.theaa.ie Four small patches of rubber each about the size of your hand are the only parts of the car in touch with the road. The right tyres, in good condition and correctly inflated are vital for braking and cornering safety – and the only things keeping the car on the road.

When replacing your tyres you must stick to the same size, type and ideally brand and tread pattern too. This is likely to be the tyre best suited to the car. Changing brand or pattern could result in increased noise or adversely affect cornering characteristics for example.

New tyres to the front or rear? Regular checks and maintenance will help to prolong the life of the tyres and keep you on the right side of the law too. Tyre life is influenced by several factors: Driving style. For example, aggressive cornering and harsh braking increases wear Position. Front tyres wear faster because of movement through steering

• Puncture Repair Check the car manual first as some vehicle manufacturers give specific advice on this. If there is no information in the manual, then it's good practice for safety to fit the best/newest tyres on the rear. In wet conditions, this favours understeer rather than oversteer. So if you have the front tyres renewed it's best to have the rear ones moved to the front and the new tyres fitted to the rear.

Speed. High speed driving increases temperature and increases wear

Basic legal requirements

Load. Heavy loading increases wear

Tyres must be compatible with others on the car and generally be in good physical condition

Pressure. Both under inflation and over inflation increase wear Alignment. Incorrect wheel alignment results in rapid and uneven wear. Original fit car tyres For new cars the car maker and tyre manufacturers work closely to select a make, size and tread pattern that suits the car. Styling, handling, noise and many other factors are taken into account.

Irish Motorists Could Be Wasting €Millions On Fuel Needlessly Michelin Study Shows Irish motorists could be wasting over €18 million a year on fuel and putting lives at risk by driving on dangerously underinflated tyres, if figures drawn from a UK-wide study conducted by Michelin were applied here.

checked had underinflated tyres of which 37% were ‘dangerously underinflated’ or ‘very dangerously’ underinflated. Some 5% had a punctured tyre and one per cent had tread depths below the legal minimum.

After inspecting tens of thousands of cars over an eight-year period, the free Fill-Up-With-Air tyre check programme - extended to include events held in Galway, Naas, Dungarvan and Ballymena (where the company manufactures truck and bus tyres for the European and US markets) Michelin found that 62% of cars

Running on tyres underinflated by as little as 7psi can increase fuel consumption by about 1 litre every 833kms. At an average petrol/diesel fuel price of €1.37 per litre, this means that almost one third of all cars in Ireland could be consuming an additional €18 million a year on fuel needlessly, Michelin estimates.

What could your community organisation do with up to €1000? €1000 to be spent as your organisation wishes is the top prize that’s up for grabs with the launch of the 2015 RUTT (Round up the Troops) project. The initiative, run by South Tipperary Volunteer Centre in association with North Tipperary Leader Partnership, South Tipperary Development Company and Tipperary County Council will go county-wide this year. The initiative aims to assist community based not for profit organisations in County Tipperary with the completion of projects that

they are not in a position to complete themselves due to a lack of sufficient resources or skills within their group. In essence the project is about cultivating community spirit through volunteerism where a group that has the resources assists a group that doesn’t to complete a project that will benefit the hosting group. Project options are only limited by the resources and skills that the group who plan to take on the project can provide. Signing up is as simple as talking to your own group to see if you have

Future proof your Home.

Fogged up windows? Condensation on the glass? Rubbers to small ? Hinges and handles not closing correctly ? These are all signs that you are Heating the street! as they say. When you turn your heating on it rises to the ceiling and a good insulated Attic which most people have will keep it down . The next ports of exit are the glass, the windows and the walls. New windows would be the order of the day if the pockets are deep enough and enthusiasm for the redecoration afterwards. What you might not know is an upgrade of your existing windows is possible a lot cheaper and with little disturbance to your home. Early double-glazing was as simple as 2 panes of ordinary glass joined together. It was a small step up from single glazing but with modern advances in both glass manufacturing technology and with research into energy management, experts learnt that poor performing glazing is a major weak link in Building Energy Rating (BER). The standard of glass has improved so much in the last ten years that A-Rated gas filled double glazing can retain 70% more heat then normal double glazing. The difference between single glazing and A-Rated double glazing is huge. The savings enourmous!!

Teak ,Aluminium and PVC windows can all be upgraded to improve your home and make it more snug for the winter. The service on the windows includes replacing all the glass repairing all the rubber and checking and repairing any hinges and loose handles that may leave draughts. As the work is 90% external there is very little disturbance to your home. You could also change the appearance of your house by including georgian bar effect or if your old double glazing has georgian you could remove it and give your house a fresher look whilst upgrading to A_Rated glass. On our doorstep we have Carey Glass ltd which produce an A-rated unit that has a U-Value of 1.0 which in double glazing is the best.Triple glazing can reach as low as 0.7 but most older windows would not take the weight or thickness of glass. So if you have old teak single glazed windows or aluminium windows with shrunken rubber or if you just feel your rooms are not staying warm contact the glazier and talk over the improvements he could make and the windows you have. We at Mirror and Glassworx would be delighted to take your call and advise you the best we can..

ENTERTAINMENT & EVENTS Star of The Sea at The Source Thurles Moonfish Theatre Company in co-production with An Taibhdhearc and in association with Stroller’s Touring Network present STAR OF THE SEA adapted from the novel by Joseph O’Connor The Source Arts Centre, ThurlesCo Tipperary Saturday 17 October | 8.00pm | €15 Box Office – Tel: 0504 90204 / www.thesourceartscentre.ie Award-winning Moonfish Theatre Company, are proud to announce the national tour of Star of the Sea after their global premiere and sold out run at the Galway International Arts Festival 2014. A coproduction with An Taibhdhearc, the play opens at the company’s hometown Galway, and at An Taibhdhearc on September 16 for four dates and tours to 9 other venues nationwide until October 24. Star of the Sea, originally the international best selling novel by Joseph O’Connor, is set against the backdrop of the Irish famine. It was Moonfish Theatre Company with Galway’s An Taibhdhearc that first brought to life this theatrical reimagining of O’Connor’s historical writing. With the original cast the company are delighted to share this great piece of Irish theatre to wider audiences, this Autumn. Star of the Sea is a sweeping story, set during the Famine, that moves between the wild landscape of Connemara, Co. Galway and the claustrophobic confines of a famine ship - the Star of the Sea. It is this ship that sets sail for the promised land and makes the journey from Ireland to New York, in 1847. Among the passengers are maidservant Mary Duane, the ruined Lord Meredith, and Pius Mulvey, a ruthless murderer. Their lives and fates are more connected than any of them know, creating a gripping story of revenge and forgiveness in this new piece of Irish theatre.

Moonfish Theatre’s production asks a number of timeless questions which not only straddle Irish history but are very pertinent to many other countries including the Ireland of today: what happens when a society is put under immense pressure? What are the ethical choices that face individuals at these moments in time? And what has been the Famine’s lasting effect on Irish culture, in particular, the Irish language and music? Star of the Sea is a bilingual play that will be performed in Moonfish Theatre’s signature blend of Irish and English and will be accessible to audiences with little or no Irish. The show has been created for an adult audience, and is suitable for anyone over 16 years. This is a not-to-be-missed play, which tours nationwide this September and October. What author of Star of the Sea, Joseph O’Connor said about the show: "...I found their version and their adaptation of it so moving and very emotional...and to hear those words spoken in the Irish language...was really something that I'll never forget." Funded & supported by The Arts Council of Ireland, Foras na Gaeilge, Galway City Council, An Taibhdhearc & Stroller’s Touring Network Production Award Created and performed by the Company (Ionia Ní Chróinín, Grace Kiely, Zita Monahan, Morgan Cooke, Simon Boyle & Máiréad Ní Chróinín) “Gorgeously Assembled theatre” – THE IRISH TIMES * * * * “A lesson in theatre magic… captures an extraordinary and devastating story” – IRISH DAILY MAIL* * * * Further details at www.moonfishtheatre.com

Counselling Anxiety

(continued from previous issue)

Social Anxiety. Psychological and physical symptoms. You can see by this stage of how destructive social anxiety is. It is so disabling because sufferers feel helpless under the onslaught of its symptoms, which are psychological and physical. The psychological symptoms of social phobia are fear, anxiety and worry. These unpleasant feelings may come on months before the event, and you worry about making a fool of yourself in public, making a mess of a speech, being seen by others as being nervous, being judged and ridiculed, and being self-conscious. It is as if you are the centre of attraction for the wrong reasons. You know that this is ridiculous and irrational, but this does not ease the worry and the fear. This intense fear, worry and anxiety will affect your body and bring on unpleasant physical reactions. Your mouth may feel parched, sweat breaks out on your forehead, your voice becomes shaky, your hands feel clammy, your face twitches, and you may feel faint. Some of the reactions are similar to those of panic attacks. A common reaction is palpitations, which in themselves can cause a lot of stress and fear. Those who suffer from this complaint may tremble and sweat, even at the thought of going to a celebration. They immediately become tense, blush, and often feel dizzy. They may experience an overwhelming sense of despair and hopelessness; feel a knot in their stomach, and a strong desire to escape from the social event. One of the principal symptoms of social phobia affects your breathing. As the stress and anxiety increases, you will begin to breathe rapidly, and this in turn triggers other distressing physical symptoms such as dizziness, a choking feeling, increased pulse, and tension. These can be relieved by deep breathing. Meditation and relaxation techniques also provide some relief. On a longer term examine your thoughts and try to change them. Negative thoughts predicting disaster or embarrassment create a negative outlook and an irrational inner world, which nourishes the anxiety. Changing these thoughts to more positive ones starves the anxiety and destroys the inner irrational, unreal world that you have created. For example you could

change the following negative thoughts, ‘I know I’m going to make a right idiot (eejit!) of myself’, ‘I can’t do this’, ‘ this is too much for me’, ‘I know I’m going to get a panic attack’, ‘people will think I am a bore’, people will think I’m stupid’, ‘I know I’m going to sweat, and what will people say’, ‘I know my mouth will dry up and I will speak with a squeak’, and so on. You might substitute the following positive thoughts for these negative thoughts - ‘I know what I’m talking about, I have researched what I am going to say’, ‘I might sweat. So what!’, ‘it is normal to be nervous when speaking in public’, ‘I will have a glass of water nearby if my mouth gets dry. It’s normal to have a dry mouth when speaking publicly’, ‘I won’t get a panic attack. I know how to breathe deeply to ensure my breathing is ok’, ‘People won’t think that I’m boring. If some do, so what!’, ‘I am not that important that people will focus on me’. Try to put in a thought that is exactly the opposite of the negative thought. You could practise this on a daily basis until it becomes second nature to you. It is important to understand that positive thinking and behaviour can undo the negative pathways hardwired on our brain and replace them with positive ones. This is well researched and proved. I have found it successful in my own regard. It takes about a year or so for this to work.
