Tom Semple and The Thurles Blues Semple Stadium, Thurles, has for decades been the ‘mecca’ for GAA supporters, particularly hurling. Thousands throng to this heartland of hurling to witness the intense inter-county rivalries contested in the birthplace of the GAA. But what of the man whose name the stadium honours. This long-awaited biography of Tom Semple and his legendary Thurles Blues, was launched recently. Tom Semple, the GAA icon, is synonymous with the game of hurling, since he led the Thurles Blues to All-Ireland glory in 1906 and 1908. Read about these earlier heroes of the camán and of Tom Semple’s training regime and tactics. Follow the Blues on their amazing tour to Brussels and historic Fontenoy in 1910. Find out about the fascinating story of the early years of Thurles Sports-
field, renamed Semple Stadium in Tom’s memory, and how it developed into today’s ‘Field of Legends’. A coproduction with An Taibhdhearc, the play opens at the company’s hometown Galway, and at An Taibhdhearc on September 16 for four dates and tours to 9 other venues nationwide until October 24. Star of the Sea, originally the international best selling novel by Joseph O’Connor, is set against the backdrop of the Irish famine. It was Moonfish Theatre Company with Galway’s An Taibhdhearc that first brought to life this theatrical reimagining of O’Connor’s historical writing. With the original cast the company are delighted to share this great piece of Irish theatre to wider audiences, this Autumn. Star of the Sea is a sweeping story, set during the Famine, that moves between the wild landscape of Connemara, Co. Galway and the claustrophobic confines of a famine ship - the Star of the Sea. It is this ship that sets sail for the promised land and makes the journey from Ireland to New York, in 1847. Among the passengers are maidservant Mary Duane, the ruined Lord Meredith, and Pius Mulvey, a ruthless murderer. Their lives and fates are more connected than any of them know, creating a gripping story of revenge and forgiveness in this new piece of Irish theatre.

Moonfish Theatre’s production asks a number of timeless questions which not only straddle Irish history but are very pertinent to many other countries including the Ireland of today: what happens when a society is put under immense pressure? What are the ethical choices that face individuals at these moments in time? And what has been the Famine’s lasting effect on Irish culture, in particular, the Irish language and music? Star of the Sea is a bilingual play that will be performed in Moonfish Theatre’s signature blend of Irish and English and will be accessible to audiences with little or no Irish. The show has been created for an adult audience, and is suitable for anyone over 16 years. This is a not-to-be-missed play, which tours nationwide this September and October. What author of Star of the Sea, Joseph O’Connor said about the show: "...I found their version and their adaptation of it so moving and very emotional...and to hear those words spoken in the Irish language...was really something that I'll never forget." Social Anxiety. It prevents us reaching our potential. Effects on relationships. Erectile dysfunction. Sadly, social anxiety not only hinders the social development of sufferers, but it also prevents them from reaching their potential in almost every aspect of their lives. As they look back on their lives, they will see a vista of lost opportunities, of being (wrongly) seen as social misfits and recluses. They remain chained by negative thoughts and low self-esteem, and, for example, may abandon further education. The idea of going to adult night classes is too much for them. One of the most undesirable consequences of social anxiety is how it impacts on intimacy. Because they do not feel good enough, sufferers may fear intimacy, and this hinders the development of intimate relationships. Indeed dating for sufferers can be nerve racking. There is a strong likelihood that victims of social anxiety may marry the first person who shows an interest in them, because they may feel that this is the only chance they will get. That is not a good basis for a long-term relationship, although some relationships formed in this way are successful. There is the obvious temptation that sufferers may resort to internet dating. In this way, they feel reassured that they will not have to make intimate contact, but this is avoidance, an unhealthy defence mechanism. In the context of intimacy, it is now clear that anxiety affects our sexual performance. I am not sure if this should go in under social anxiety, but it is worth looking at. Anxiety can play a crippling role in the case of both men and women. Sexual problems then become performance anxiety, and victims suffer a painful vicious circle of general and performance anxiety. The spontaneity of lovemaking is replaced by an increasing fear of the inability to perform. Sexual performance anxiety seriously interferes with the ability to enjoy what is fundamental to all living beings - sexual pleasure. We are sexual beings, and this is a great loss. As with other types of anxiety, the tendency is to avoid the stressor. In this case having sex is the stressor.

In the case of men, erectile dysfunction (failure either to get or to hold an erection) is a hurtful and widespread reality. Sometimes it is due to some physical problem such as blood pressure, blood pressure medication, prostate problems, or merely getting older when our testosterone levels are dropping, but in many cases it comes down to anxiety. This may not be performance anxiety as such, but any type of anxiety. When we become anxious, our bodies release chemicals such as Dopamine or Adrenaline. As previously explained, this is in reaction to the flight or flight response, which sends blood to the hands or the feet. Blood flow to the penis causes an erection, so if the blood is going elsewhere it is difficult to get an erection. Therefore, it is vital to change your negative thoughts to positive ones, and to use all the techniques outlined in this series of articles. Above all is also important for partners to be understanding and supportive. Any type of mocking or ridicule increases the shame associated with the inability to sexually perform, and contributes to low self-esteem and more long-term sexual dysfunction. It is psychological castration. I would recommend the website ‘Sex health in plain English.com’, which explains and outlines some techniques for men who experience this embarrassing complaint.
