Playing golf with his buddies, my grandfather had to make a slick 25foot putt. As he lined it up, he announced, "I have a €5 that says I can make this putt. Does anyone want to bet?" His three friends eagerly agreed to the wager. My grandfather missed the putt by ten feet, and his friends gathered around to collect their money. Granddad pulled out a €5 note on which he had written, "I can make this putt." His pals are still trying to collect on the bet and granddad is too.

I have to exercise early in the morning before my brain figures out what I'm doing.
A man asked his wife what she'd like for her birthday. "I'd really love to be ten again" she replied wistfully. On the morning of her birthday, he arose early, got up, made her a nice big bowl of Frosties and then took her off to their local theme park. What a day! He put her on every ride in the park: the Death Slide, the Wall of Fear, the Screaming Monster Roller Coaster, everything there was. Five hours later she staggered out of the theme park. Her head was reeling and her stomach felt upside down. Right away, they journeyed to a McDonald's where her loving husband ordered her a Happy Meal with extra fries and a refreshing chocolate shake. Then it was off to the cinema to see the latest blockbuster, complete with a hot-dog, popcorn, a big fizzy drink, and a huge bag of M&M's, her favourite sweets. What a time she had! Finally she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bed exhausted. He leaned over his precious wife with a big smile and lovingly
asked, "Well, Darling, what was it like being ten again?" Her eyes slowly opened and her expression suddenly changed. "Oh dear", she replied. "I meant my dress size..." And the moral of the story: Even when a man is listening, he's still going to get it wrong.
An 85 year old couple, having been married almost 60 years, had died in a car crash. They had been in good health the last ten years mainly due to her interest in health food and exercise. When they reached the pearly gates, St. Peter took them to their mansion which was decked out with a beautiful kitchen and master bath suite and Jacuzzi. As they "oohed and aahed" the old man asked St. Peter how much all this was going to cost. "It's free," St. Peter replied, "this is Heaven." Next they went out back to survey the championship golf course that the home backed up to. They would have golfing privileges everyday and each week the course changed to a new one representing the greatest golf courses on earth.
The old man asked, "What are the green fees?" St. Peter's reply, "This is heaven, you play for free." Next they went to the club house and saw the lavish buffet lunch with the cuisines of the world laid out. "How much does it cost to eat?" asked the old man. "Don't you understand yet? This is heaven, it's free!" St. Peter replied with some exasperation. "Well, where are the low fat and low cholesterol tables?" the old man asked timidly. St. Peter lectured, "That's the best part. You can eat as much as you like of whatever you like and you never get fat and you never get sick. This is Heaven." With that the old man went into a fit of anger, throwing down his hat and stomping on it, shrieking wildly. St. Peter and the old man's wife both tried to calm him down, asking him what was wrong. The old man looked at his wife and said, "It's all your fault! It's all your fault!" His wife said, "My fault? What are you talking about?" He yelled, "If it weren't for your blasted bran muffins, I could have been here ten years ago!"

Dundrum Craft & Food Fair Oct 26th Dundrum Craft Group are holding their annual Craft and Food Fair on Sunday October 26th. This year again no effort is being spared to ensure the success of this event. As usual 20 to 24 stalls are expected. The goods vary from jewellery, knitwear, sewing, pastry and bread, buns, pictures, cushions, honey which is always a major feature, woodturning demonstrations from Sean O'Brien, woodcraft, cards etc., jams and gluten free foods and hope-
fully vegetables and meat. All work will be home produced and as such will be vetted by the committee. The show starts at 1 p.m. and closes at 5 p.m. The Hospice stall will also feature, where the relaxing cup of tea will be available. A vintage stall from Clonoulty Rally is also a part of the scene. Junior Alley in Roscrea Shopping Centre celebrated it’s first year in business at the end of July. The shop stocks a large selection of kids and ladies clothing and footwear. Shoppers come from all around eg. Thurles, Nenagh, Templemore, Cloughjordan, Birr etc. Junior Alley is run by Catherine Sheeran who previously worked 18 years with the Health Service. Just three weeks after opening the shop Catherine was diagnosed with cancer. Friends and family were excellent and helped out in the shop while Catherine was undergoing treatment which consisted of 8 months chemo and 2 months radium in St James Hospital and St. Lukes Hospital in Dublin. Catherine is two months past her last treatment. One thing is sure, when you enter Junior Alley you will be greeted with a warm smile and a friendly hello from Catherine, who loves meeting people coming into the shop. You can even avail of an ad hoc counselling service and will be guaranteed to leave with a smile on your face if you take the time to have a chat with Catherine. The shop is going from strength to strength, and it’s no wonder, with the great range, excellent prices and free delivery to practically anywhere. Liam Ó Maonlaí to play in Borrisoleigh on Sunday October 5th Borrisoleigh is the place to be for the first weekend in October as the Borrisoleigh Festival takes place from Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th October. Locals have been busy again this year painting premises around the town and even more lovely murals have been added to the ones painted last year. The festival is being officially opened on Friday evening in McDonagh Square with the re-inroduction of the mayoral candidates followed by live music by Outa Diesel. Saturday has two walks organised by the local Bush and Briar Ramblers up the Devil’s Bit and on the newly opened Inch Loop Walk. There is also a Line Dancing workshop in the Marion Hall and a Food and Craft Fair in the Square. Craftspeople who would like to book a stall can phone Fiona at 087-2169150. Due to circumstances the historical walk around Borrisoleigh scheduled for Saturday has been cancelled and is being replaced by live music in the Square from 2.30pm onwards. Live music in the Square starts at 7.30pm with the White Gypsy Band followed by the ever popular Silver Dollar and friends at 9pm. Sunday the 5th starts off with the annual 40k charity cycle organised by the local cycling club with funds raised this year going to Downs Syndrome North Tipp Branch. The Family Fun Day in the park, which starts at 1.30pm, is bigger and better this year with a
host of new fun activities added. Along with popular favourites from last year such as Bubble Soccer, Strongman Display by Irish Champion and local man Kevin Murray, Tug of War, Sheaf Tossing, BBQ and novelty games of skill, there is also an exhibition of Birds of Prey, Bouncy Castles, Sumo Wrestling, Rodeo Bull, Arts, Crafts and Music workshops for kids, a vintage tractor display, a climbing wall, face painting and more. To book yourself or a team to play Bubble Soccer phone Fiona at 087-2169150. Live music in the Square kicks off at 5pm with the Castle Trio. At 7pm the acclaimed Liam Ó Maonlaí (of Hothouse Flowers fame) will take the stage. At 9pm Ebony take over and the new Mayor/Mayoress of Borrisoleigh will be announced. New Craft Centre for Nenagh - The Stiching Room The Stitching Room in Nenagh, which has recently opened it’s doors, is a fully equipped dedicated craft learning room in the town centre that will deliver knitting, sewing, crochet, card craft and flower craft. The room is also available to groups to have their own craft classes or meetings. Knitting, sewing and crochet are skills that were passed down from one generation to another in families. Each lovingly making practical garments, creative gifts and family heirlooms. These skills however seem to have missed a generation and may soon be lost to many of us.

The Stitching Room hopes to address this issue. It is a dedicated craft training room in Nenagh town centre. The room has all the resources and equipment you need to learn to knit, sew, crochet or quilt. There are scheduled classes morning and evening to suit all abilities or any group can book the room for one or more sessions.
With many of us becoming more frugal it is important that we can patch a knee, sew a hem or knit a winter hat. And it is even more important that we pass these skills on to the next generation. Sewing and knitting are methodical and can be very relaxing, and you get something practical when you are finished. Creamy Chicken Korma Recipe by Neven Maguire The spicing in this korma is absolutely authentic, so it won’t resemble the formula restaurant version. Apparently it is traditionally the emperor’s favourite and it’s now one of mine too. In India it would be garnished with fresh rose petals, but for me it needs nothing more than a scattering of fresh coriander leaves.

Serves 4 2 tbsp rapeseed oil 2 onions, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 green chilli, seeded and finely chopped (optional) 2 tsp finely grated root ginger 1 tsp garam masala 1 tsp ground turmeric ¼ tsp chilli powder 400g (14oz) can chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp mango chutney, plus extra to serve 1 tsp tomato purée 400g (14oz) can coconut milk 4 x 175g (6oz) boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 2.5cm (1in) cubes sea salt and freshly ground black pepper steamed basmati rice, to serve handful of fresh coriander leaves, to garnish warmed naan bread or green chilli and coriander flatbreads
Add the garam masala to the pan with the turmeric, chilli powder and a pinch of salt and cook for another minute, stirring. Add the tomatoes, chutney, tomato purée and 4 tablespoons of water. Stir well to combine, then bring to a fast simmer for 5 minutes, until the sauce is so well reduced that it is almost sticking to the bottom of the pan, stirring occasionally. Stir the coconut milk into the pan and then stir in the chicken. Slowly bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer gently for 10–15 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through and completely tender. Season to taste.
To serve, arrange the basmati rice and chicken korma on warmed plates and scatter over the coriander leaves to garnish. Whip 375ml (13fl oz) of the cream until soft peaks form and then fold into the mascarpone mixture.

Pour the coffee into a shallow dish and stir in the Coole Swan.
- 750g (1¾lb) mascarpone cheese, well chilled - 200g (7oz) icing sugar, sifted - 1 vanilla pod, split in half and seeds scraped out - 450ml (¾ pint) cream, well chilled - 200ml (7fl oz) freshly brewed strong espresso coffee, left to cool - 100ml (3½fl oz) Coole Swan Irish cream liqueur - 2 x 380g (13oz) chocolate loaf cakes (shop-bought or homemade) - 2 tsp good-quality cocoa powder - 10–12 chocolate-covered coffee beans, to decorate This might look like a very impressive cake that took ages to make, but it’s really only an assembly job. Mascarpone is a rich, creamy cheese from Lodi in the Lombardy region of Italy. It has a sweetened taste and is famously used in classic tiramisu, which is the basis of this dessert. However, I’ve used shop-bought chocolate loaf cakes instead of the traditional sponge fingers. Using an electric whisk, mix the mascarpone cheese, icing sugar and vanilla seeds until well combined.
Slice the chocolate loaves. Line the base and sides of a 23cm (9in) springform cake tin with parchment paper and wrap the outside in clingfilm to avoid any leaks. Dip 8 of the chocolate cake slices in the Coole Swan mixture to cover the bottom of the tin. It’s important to only dip them as you go along so that they are not soaking for long, which would make them difficult to handle. Cover the layer of soaked chocolate cake with one-third of the mascarpone cream and then arrange another even layer of the soaked cake slices on top. Continue layering in this way, finishing with a mascarpone layer, and place in the fridge to chill for 10–15 minutes. Meanwhile, whip the rest of the cream in a clean bowl and transfer to a piping bag fitted with a star-shaped nozzle. When ready to serve, carefully remove from the cake tin and transfer to a cake stand. Give the cake an even dusting of the cocoa powder, then pipe 10–12 peaks of cream around the edge of the cake and top each one with a chocolate-covered coffee bean. Place in the middle of the table so that everyone can help themselves.

Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C. SUCCESSFUL CROSS COUNTRY CHALLENGE HELD The Annual Moycarkey/Moyne Cross Country Challenge took place in the Middlepiece on Thursday 25th September. This year, it was great to see a 4 way competition with Moyglass A.C. & Coolquill A.C. joining in. There was a big turnout on the night with 177 athletes (aged U/6 to U/16) from the 4 Clubs taking part (numbers would have been closer to 200 as some athletes attended Tipperary's last training session before their replay with Kilkenny and others were at the Ploughing Championships. So this is a very good sign for the annual Track & Field Challenge next year). Congratulations to Moyne A.C. who enjoyed the overall victory on the night with the Club in 2nd place, Moyglass 3rd and Coolquill 4th. All athletes seemed to enjoy the run out with over 20 athletes participating in some of the younger age group races. We are sure this will be of great benefit to them before the County Primary Schools & County Even Age Championships this coming weekend. After the races, everyone was treated to a warm welcome and top class refreshments in the new Sports Complex in Littleton. There was sterling work done in the kitchen under the leadership of Josephine Martin who was ably assisted by Rachel Martin, Catriona & Ciara Mockler, Helen
Purcell & Mary Shelly. Many thanks to all who helped out on the night & to everyone who provided sandwiches & confectionary. Thanks also to Donal Hayes for the continued use of his lands by the Club. It is all very much appreciated. Club Chairman, Michael Mockler said a few words & presented the Moyne Captain, Erika Carroll with the brand new Cross Country Challenge Cup with medals (courtesy of Ger Costelloe) also given out. Erica congratulated all on their participation, thanked the coaches and parents for their time and wished everyone well in the forthcoming Cross Country Season, a sentiment that was echoed by our Club Chairman. In the past our students have been successful in completing both courses and have gone onto permanent employment, set up their own business or further their studies at third level. A recent graduate of our level 6 Administration course Patricia Langton, secured employment with local employer’s Richmond Trading Ltd. She says the course has helped her to grow in confidence and improve her business skills.
So the Secretarial course is alive and well – just changing its name and adapting to the new world. These courses are fantastic for any person who is looking to get back into the workforce, or isn’t sure of what career direction to take. You learn skills that will be used throughout your life.
