Tipperary Graduate Short-Listed For Prestigious Award by Sarah Butler/ Seamus Hoyne. LIT. The power of dreams: Graduate of LIT. Tipperary, Anthony Glynn, has been short-listed for the prestigious 2014 David Manley Emerging Entrepreneur Awards.
New President for Thurles Chamber John O’Shaughnessy, Managing Director of Clancy Construction, was elected President of Thurles Chamber at the recent AGM held in Thurles. John takes over from PJ Shanahan of Tim Looby Associates, who completed two packed years at the helm of Thurles Chamber. John O’Shauughnessy tells us that “PJ worked tirelessly during his two years as President of the Chamber and had some significant success during his tenure with the official opening of Thurles Chamber Enterprise Centre (TCEC) which was a joint venture between Thurles Chamber and LIT, the installation of the CCTV system to the town of Thurles and the reduction of the Chamber debt to name a few. All of these were significant achievements for Thurles Chamber during a time of deep recession. PJ and the board of Thurles Chamber have to be commended for what they achieved”. John has great hopes for his presidency and is aiming to develop a 3-4 year overall strategy that will give the Chamber more direction with a focus on particular projects. As John explains “the areas that are of interest to me are, how we communicate with our membership, networking events, training and seminars, events
will allow local business people meet in an informal setting where they can interact with each other and build B2B relationships and at the same time learn new skill sets that will allow them develop their business. The development of the town square and the proposed car park to the rear of Jackie Griffins shop are two particular projects that I feel we as a Chamber should be focusing on. I intend to meet with the local authority and business people on the square and any other interested parties to who see how we all working together can progress these projects for the betterment of the town centre”. John brings over twenty years of business experience to the board and has served on the board of Clancy Construction for over 10 years. During this time, John has held the position of HR, Contracts, Safety, and Quality director. He is currently the Vice President of the Master Builders and Contractors Association (MBCA) a national organisation that represents main building contractors. He is also a member of the national executive of the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) which represents building contractors, sub contractors and suppliers.

Albert Glynn from Roscrea and James Sherlock from Athlone, have together designed a hydro-turbine engine system that enables people to harness electricity from the natural flow of water in minor rivers, streams, weirs and sluice gates. Their innovative and creative thinking has resulted in a fledgling but hugely promising Business called “Ár NuaTEC” which has gained a nomination(Business category) on the shortlist for the prestigious David Manley Emerging Entrepreneur Awards sponsored by the Dublin Chamber of Commerce. Lateral thinking seems to come naturally to Anthony Glynn, who studied Renewable Energy Development at
LIT.Tipperary (formerly Tipperary Institute.) During the course of the programme Anthony developed his initial concept and has gone on to pursue his dreams of devising new ways of generating electricity for rural communities at a reasonable cost. The combined innovative spirit and creative thinking embodied by the dynamic duo have resulted in the development of a micro-hydro turbine engine called “DUNK-E”which gives people the choice of generating their own electricity by harnessing the energy provided by natural resources. The turbine has yet to be patented. Anthony claims that the main advantages of “Dunk-E” combine energy savings with cost efficiency and has applications both within Ireland and abroad, including developing countries. The Hairdressing Department at Templemore College (formerly St. Sheelan’s college) recently facilitated a cutting and styling workshop hosted by top Irish Stylist Kieran O’Gorman. The students observed Kieran and his team as they transformed ordinary hair cuts into extraordinary styles. His tips and techniques left a lasting impression on this dedicated group of students at Templemore College. Kieran opened his salon in Kilkenny in 1992 - Kieran O’Gorman Hair & Beauty is now a leading quality 5 star salon. During his career, Kieran has worked all over Ireland showcasing his work at various events and conducting seminars and session work. He has also showcased his famous collections at the prestigious Salon International. Kieran has also worked in Dubai, Iceland, India, Serbia, London and all over the U.K. Winner of the British F.A.M.E. Team Award an initiative which puts a team of four young hairdressers together to represent the British Fellowship at various showcases, Kieran puts a great deal of emphasis on training initiatives like this. Complete an Ancient Pilgrim Path this Springtime How would you like to complete one of Ireland’s oldest and most revered pilgrim paths this spring, while also supporting a good cause? You now have such an opportunity on the 18th Annual Kerry Charity Challenge which takes place from Friday, April 4 to Sunday, April 6, 2014 in the Skellig Hotel, Dingle, and supports the cause of visually impaired people and other charities. Well known Tipperary born hillwalker and mountain climber, John G O'Dwyer, who has written the first guidebook book to all of Ireland’’s sacred trails titled Pilgrim Paths in Ireland, will lead the walk along the ancient Cosán na Naomh Pilgrim Path that follows the 18km route from Ventry Strand to the foot of Brandon Mountain in Co. Kerry. The tradition of pilgrimage to Brandon Mountain dates back to when the pa-
gan deity Crom Dubh was ousted from the mountain by the St Brendan, who then built an oratory on the summit. Pilgrimage has continued to the present day along a route suitable to almost all fitness levels. The path winds its way among the fuchsia-hedged fields and bare hills between the Atlantic Ocean and the memorable mountains towering above Corca Dhuibhne. The cost for his once-off opportunity to walk in the footsteps of pilgrims past with a highly knowledgeable guide is just €159 euro for the entire weekend and covers hotel B&B on Friday and Saturday along with gala dinner and entertainment Saturday evening. Career Choice and Self By Marguerite Costello, MBC Careers During all our life we make career choices based on what we think will satisfy our needs at a particular time. These choices may or may not turn out to be correct. One of the main factors that determines if occupational choice is correct is the Self. The Self is a combination of all internal and environmental factors that make up the individual (hence the debate between learned v inherited behaviour). We are faced with choices every day. What to have for breakfast, what to wear, etc. These choices are trivial in the context of the choices students have to make in terms of Subjects, Career and College. Sometimes choices are correct other times not. One of the main reasons an individual makes correct choices is their capacity to understand themselves as individual. Many of us would agree that choosing the right occupation has a major impact on our sense of Self, in terms of our self esteem and self fulfilment. If you have chosen a career that you find satisfying what happens for you is you are using your Skills and Apti-
tudes to express you Interests and Values. In doing this you are better able to meet the needs and challenges of the job. This is because there is a connection between the characteristics of the job and your own attributes. There is congruence between your personality and the characteristics of the job. When such a fit or match exists your needs, wants, desires, values, interests, and abilities are matched with and met by the demand of that job. And as these are met, you will naturally perform better, be more satisfied, seek out and accept challenges, excelling in what you do. It is also highly likely that when your career is congruent with your personality you may find that you have surrounded yourself with people of similar personalities, interests, and skills as your own. This in turn makes you feel more comfortable in your working environment, and further enhances your feeling of career satisfaction. New Food Enterprise opens in Dolla We’re delighted to see new businesses emerging throughout Tipperary as shoots of recovery start to appear. This week we talk to Joe Corcorcan who launched Curryquinn Eggs last November. Joe worked in Galmoy Mines for over 13 years but like many others across the county, was made redundant in 2009. As Joe explained “I looked for work for months but the recession had just kicked in and it was impossible to get any work. There was little work I could apply for and I wasn’t getting anywhere so I started looking at the food industry, as I had always been interested in food. I had a limited amount of land so I couldn’t make enough of an income from cattle and traditional farming. While I was thinking about a food business, I read a story in The Farmers Journal about a new EU directive that was going to change Irish egg production and the more I looked into eggs, the more it seemed like the perfect business for me.” It took Joe over 2 years to finish his market research, business plan and source funding. Building of the state of the art facility beside his home commenced in May 2012 and Joe
started selling the first eggs in November 2013. It’s been a huge learning curve for Joe but he has loved every minute of it. The business started with 1,000 hens but due to demand from customers, has now increased to over 2,000 hens laying daily. Joe has been delighted with the support he has got to date from across North Tipperary and is now supplying eggs to all great food retailers within a 20 mile radius of Dolla (including Nenagh, Thurles, Silvermines, Templederry, Borrisoleigh, Ardcronery, Ballycommon and Puckane). As well as shops and butchers, Curryquinn Eggs are getting great support from hotels, restaurants, nursing homes and of course the great bakers of North Tipperary. Joe believes the support is down to locals loving to support local food produce and the quality of the fresh Tipperary egg he is producing. Joe was also greatly encouraged by the help provided by Rita Guinan and Eleanor Forrest of the North Tipperary County Enterprise Board. By Jim O’Shea Series 4, no. 18. Anxiety. More relaxation techniques, negative self-talk is lethal, creating a dangerous, irrational and negative fantasy world. She also outlines a process of autogenics (autogenic training is a relaxation technique developed by the German psychiatrist Johannes Heinrich Schultz), which seems easy to practice. Because this is so effective, there is a warning that it might be unsafe for people with diabetes, low blood sugar levels and heart conditions. The reason for this warning is that blood pressure may suddenly drop because of these autogenic exercises. Similarly, if you feel anxious during or following the exercises it is best to avoid them. The following is a basic idea of one exercise Sit in the meditative posture and scan the body My right arm is heavy My left arm is heavy. Both of my arms are heavy. My right leg is heavy. My left leg is heavy, Both of my legs are heavy. My arms and legs are heavy and warm (Repeat three or more times) My heartbeat is calm and regular (repeat 3 times) My solar plexus is warm (repeat 3 times) My forehead is cool My neck and shoulders are heavy (repeat 3 times) I am at peace (repeat 3 times) While the workbook by Martha Davis and her colleagues is very useful, Bourne’s workbook is one that I would strongly recommend that you have on your bookshelf. It has over 400 pages of extremely helpful material. It would be useful for people suffering from anxiety or for counsellors dealing with those who have this painful condition. It is particularly good on self-talk (chapter 8). Negative self-talk is closely linked to our beliefs and assumptions, which have roots in our childhood. For example, the belief ‘I am worthless’ comes from an abusive childhood. If children do not experience love from someone, they feel unlovable and worthless. This core belief is firmly planted in their core and becomes manifest in adulthood. At the beginning of this series of articles I have already mentioned negative self-talk, but let us explore it further here. We have seen that negative selftalk (‘what ifs’) brings us into a fantasy world that strengthens anxiety. This fantasy world is built on a foundation of negative self-talk. It has roots of negative self-talk. It is important for us to become aware of our negative self-talk (that destructive monologue that goes on incessantly in our mind), because in a way it can lie outside our awareness.
I believe that it is a mechanical and instinctive response that has been bred in our core from childhood. It may seem based in reality, but it is irrational. People suffering from anxiety, phobia, or panic live in this irrational world. When we live in this irrational, negative world, it is no wonder that we are actively avoiding situations in the real world. For example, if we think that we are going to blush on a particular occasion, we may remain away. Similarly, if we manage to attend this particular occasion we may get the irrational thought ‘suppose I panic’. The very word ‘panic’ may bring on the physical symptoms of a panic attack. Such negative thinking is a fertile ground for the noxious weed of anxiety and panic. It envisages the worst possible scenario. Series 4, no. 19. Anxiety. challenging negative self-talk and irrational ideas. Alpha brainwaves. If we have developed into adults beset by negative and irrational self-talk, we must learn to confront them. We, therefore, become aware of each negative thought and challenge it. Examine the type of words you are using in this inner dialogue. Look at phrases such as ‘I must do something or the consequences will be disastrous’, if I blush people will think I am stupid and fearful’, ‘if I falter in my speech people will ridicule me and think that I am a fool’, and so on. Confront such thoughts with ‘how do I know what people are thinking’, ‘so what’, ‘what they think is not going to kill me’, and so on. Realise, too, how harmful such thoughts are. Do you really want to torture yourself with such irrational thoughts? Do you really want to make yourself miserable? Part of identifying your negative thoughts is to take time to look at them. Write them down so that you can see how irrational they are. (Continued in next issue)
