Relay for Life exceeds €100,000 again well as supporting research to find cures and better treatments for those with the disease, are a significant contribution to the fight against cancer. Finally, she said that the venue and dates for next year’s Relay for Life Tipperary would be announced in due course, and hoped that those who participated in past years would continue to do so in the future. Speaking on behalf of the Relay Committee, Padraig Moran thanked all the teams who took part for their efforts and commitment and also for their spirit and ingenuity. He said that without the teams there would be no Relay for Life, adding that their contribution was much greater than the money they raised. Both he and Jerry Cronin, Committee Chairman, thanked Toomevara people in general and the GAA club in particular, for embracing Relay so completely during the past three years, and for giving it such total support. In conclusion, Jerry added that Relay for Life Tipperary had really just begun and will now spread its wings and go ahead from strength to strength in various venues throughout the county. Relay for Life Tipperary, held in Toomevara at the end of August has exceeded the €100k mark for the third year in a row. At the official cheque handover held last Friday evening in the Tipperary Inn, Toomevara, the final amount from this year’s Relay was announced as €104,306-29. Receiving the cheque on behalf of the Irish Cancer Society, Kathleen O Meara, Director of Advocacy with the society, thanked all who contributed to such a remarkable outcome, adding that the Tipperary Relay is one of the most successful and well organised in the country and has contributed €359,000 to the fight against cancer in the past three years. She complimented the committee for their work during the past three years, adding “you are the happiest hardworking committee I have ever met”. Pointing out that the Irish Cancer Society is not a state funded organisation, she said that funds from Relay were used to provide a range of services to cancer sufferers in Co Tipperary, including cancer information services, the night nursing service, daffodil centres the financial support programme to those suffering from cancer, the survivors supporting survivors programme and the advocacy service. Counselling Anxiety

By Jim O’Shea Series 4, no. 16. Anxiety. Deep breathing, negative thinking and desensitisation Deep breathing is one of the basic and best ways to ease and manage anxiety (and panic attacks). It takes about 3 weeks to learn how to deep breathe. It means breathing through the stomach (abdomen) rather than through the chest. When this is mastered and you breathe through your stomach your shoulders will not move, but your belly and stomach will expand and contract as you breathe. It is advisable not to spend more than 2 minutes at a time deep breathing, because you take in more oxygen this way, and can become dizzy if you do too much of it at a time. Therefore, it is best to spend a short time 5 or 6 times a day doing it. There are several ways to learn how to deep breathe. The classical way is to sit straight in a chair, put your hand on your stomach and as you breathe in your stomach will expand, and as you breathe out your stomach will contract. Having breathed in, you hold your breath for a second or two before breathing out. Some recommend putting a book on your stomach, and using your stomach to push it out. This can be difficult in the first few days, but as you practise you will notice your stomach extending more as time goes by. Long ago, I learned to deep breathe in a rather unusual, but effective way. I spent some time in the Jesuit order, and we learned deep breathing to help us when giving sermons. The method was to go down on all fours and pant like a dog! There was no great effort in this, because you have to deep breathe when in that posture. It might look strange, but it works, and eventually deep breathing becomes habitual. While deep or abdominal breathing in itself is a big help in easing anxious feelings, it can be used to relax the entire body. If you refer back to an earlier article, you will see how I incorporated deep breathing into the visualisation of the wise being. Our breath is like our spirit. Feel it gently coursing through your body. It will also help you to empty your mind and quieten your thoughts. This prevents rumination, one of the roots of depression and anxiety. Another technique is to pick a ‘relaxing’ word such as ‘peace’, ‘gentle’ and so on and repeat it as you relax each part of your body.

Since anxiety may come from distorted, negative or illogical thinking, training ourselves to think positively is the best possible way forward. This is not as difficult as one might think, although pessimistic thoughts are deep rooted, and a pessimistic thought has a greater impact than a positive one. Therefore, anxious people must constantly practise positive thinking until a new pathway is laid down in the brain. In practise, this means substituting positive thoughts for negative ones. For example, the phone rings, and the anxious person immediately thinks ‘bad news’. Constantly replacing this with the thinking ‘good news’ will help to reconfigure our negative wiring of the brain. This will take some time to achieve. Since extreme anxiety means that a person has become acutely sensitised, one of the most common procedures is to desensitise the sufferer, by gradually exposing him to the anxiety-provoking situation. Desensitisation is a technique of cognitive behavioural therapy, and involves becoming familiar with the situation that arouses the anxiety. It means steeling yourself to feel the disagreeable and severe sensations and gradually getting used to them, all the time slowly extending the limits of exposure to the fear arousing event or place. This requires courage. Who wants to experience the painful sensations associated with anxiety?
