To say that there is something for everyone is certainly true on this occasion! The festival is being officially opened on Fri at 8pm in The Marian Hall. Following the official opening the cast of Borrisoleigh Drama Group will perform the one act play ‘Spreading the News’, which was staged in June to a full house over two nights. Entry to the Official Opening and play is free. This will be followed by live music in The Square.
There will be live music in The Square from 5pm onwards, starting off with Social/Old Time Dancing. There will also be a celebration honouring the Juvenile Champions of 1963. Later on well known and popular bands Out’a Diesel, The Baby Powers and Silver Dollar will entertain the crowds for the night.
Saturday’s events will exercise your legs and your brain! There is a 3 hour walk of the Devil’s Bit Mountain, a Sean Nós Dancing workshop and an historical walking tour of the town with members of the Historical Society sharing their vast knowledge. The Borris Bothy, which is a new community craft shop and tea rooms, will also be opening on the weekend. A craft fair will have a number of local craftspeople and artisans selling their produce. On Saturday night there will be a Variety Concert showcasing local and visiting talent which promises to be a wonderful nights entertainment. Sunday 6th has a Family Fun Day in the Town Park with a host of activities. Ireland’s Strongest Man, Kevin Murray, will put on a display. There is tug ‘o war and sheaf tossing contests, plenty of sundry activities for kids to enjoy, a BBQ and a Vintage Tractor Drive. Throughout the afternoon a Busking Competition will see talented musicians competing for some great prizes on the streets of the town (to register to enter the busking competition go to borrisoleighfestival.com). The Pink Ribbon Events sponsored by Centra in aid of the Irish Cancer Society will be a huge attraction. You can try your hand to score a goal past Tipperary Senior Goalkeeper, Brendan Cummins. Pieta House Roscrea suicide crisis centre launched by Joan Freeman Pieta House’s founder and CEO Joan Freeman was in Roscrea this week to officially launch Pieta House’s Roscrea suicide and selfharm crisis centre. The centre, which opened earlier this summer, provides a free, professional therapeutic service for people in distress. Originally intended as a part-time outreach centre, demand has been very strong and the centre is now open six days a week.

By Jim O’Shea I have mentioned already that exercise is very important in dealing with anxiety. It is equally important in recovering from burn out. It can be combined with relaxation exercises, such as muscle relaxation. It is also important to take time out for yourself during the day. You need that personal space. I always take several hours for myself each day. It is my time. The most I spend writing throughout the week is 15 hours and that is too much at my age!! As with anxiety, a healthy and balanced diet is also very important in recovering from burn out. That means eliminating, as much as possible, processed foods and sweets, biscuits, buns, cakes and all that lovely sugary food. You can substitute sugar with Xylitol, which is a natural sweetener. You can get it in the health shops. It is not an artificial sweetener (avoid these), it is as sweet as sugar, and it is good for your teeth. On the downside, it is expensive. Finally, get sufficient sleep. The better you sleep the more energy you will have, and I find that a good night’s sleep gives me a sense of well-being.
Series 4, no. 13 Anxiety. Progressive relaxation to relieve anxiety. Meditation and visualisation is an excellent way of dealing with anxiety. If used at an early stage meditation can prevent the build up of anxiety, which might lead to panic attacks and disablement. I have used this on some people suffering from anxiety and was amazed at how it works. Anxious people can learn how to meditate, but I believe that having someone else to lead the meditation is the most effective. It allows the anxious person to relax and follow the instructions of the meditation or visualisation. It includes progressive relaxation, which means relaxing each member of your body from scalp to feet. Shakti Gawain has some very good books on visualisation, which your local bookshop will order it for you. There are some beautiful visualisation exercises in Bourne’s book (pages 229 to 234), and a very good section on meditation (pages 378 to 397). I have a number of meditations/visualisation/progressive muscle relaxation techniques, which I find useful. If you would like some, please contact me via my website, mobile phone or email. You might like to practise these two, which I often use Close your eyes and sit back on the couch. Feel the back of the couch supporting you. Place you feet on the floor. Be aware of the floor supporting you. Make sure your clothes are loose. Gently rest your hands on your lap with your palms open. Take a deep breath and exhale slowly, allowing your shoulders to be loose and relaxed. Open your mouth wide. Yawn, or pretend you are yawning. Let the areas around your eyes and forehead be relaxed and loose. Let the areas around your nose, mouth and jaw be relaxed.
Breathe slowly and easily. All the time notice how your breath gently travels through your body. If ideas or feeling come into your mind at this time, pretend they are a telephone ringing in the distance, perhaps in a neighbour’s house. Acknowledge that ‘someone is calling’, but you do not have to answer. Then repeat the following 4 times:Take a deep breath, inhaling gently and slowly and comfortably, imagining the breath entering your right nostril. Hold the breath for a moment, then exhale slowly and comfortably, imagining that you are exhaling through your left nostril. Take another deep breath, this time imagining your breath entering your left nostril and exiting your right. Focus your attention on how your breath feels – cooling as it enters your nostrils, perhaps gently expanding your chest as it fills your lungs, then slightly warming your nostrils as you breathe out. You may wish to visualise the air as having a beautiful, vibrant colour as it enters and exits your body. Now focus your attention on one area of your body Be aware of your scalp relaxing Be aware of your eyes, ears, and jaw relaxing. Be aware of your neck relaxing Be aware of your shoulders relaxing Be aware of your chest relaxing Be aware of your upper back relaxing Be aware of your arms and hands relaxing. Be aware of your abdomen relaxing Be aware of your buttocks relaxing Be aware of your legs relaxing Be aware of your feet relaxing. Now, have done this progressive relaxation process 4 times, slowly come back into the room, and enjoy the relaxed state you have created.
