Christmas is a time when everybody wants his Past forgotten and his present remembered.

Jokes A man phones home from his office and says to his wife, "I have the chance to go fishing for a week. It's the opportunity of a lifetime. I have to leave right away. Please pack my clothes, my fishing equipment, and especially my blue silk pajamas. I'll be home in an hour to pick them up." The man rushes home to grab everything. He hugs his wife, apologizes for the short notice, and then hurries off. A week later, the man returns and his wife asks, "Did you have a good trip, dear?"

The man replies, "Yep, the fishing was great... but you forgot to pack my blue silk pajamas." His wife smiles and says, "Oh, no I didn't... I put them in your tackle box!"

10 Reasons To Shop Locally & Support Independent Retailers 1. Local Economic Stimulus. When you purchase at locally owned businesses rather than nationally owned, more money is kept in the community because locally-owned businesses often purchase from other local businesses and service providers . Purchasing local helps grow other businesses. 2. Non Profits Receive Greater Support. Local business owners donate more to local charities than non-local owners. 3. Unique Businesses Create Character & Prosperity The unique character of your local community is defined in large part by the business that reside there, and that plays a big factor in your overall satisfaction with where you live and the value of your home and property.

4. Environmental Impact Is Reduced. Small local business usually set up shop in the town/village centre, providing a centralized variety that is much friendlier to a community's walk score than out of town shopping malls. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution.

to have to commute which means more time and less traffic and pollution. 6. Customer Service Is Better. Local businesses often hire people with more specific product expertise for better customer service. 7. Local Business Owners Invest In Community. Local businesses are owned by people who live in the community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community's welfare and future. 8. Public Benefits Far Outweigh Public Costs. Local businesses require comparatively little infrastructure and more efficiently utilize public services relative to chain stores. 9. Competition And Diversity Leads To More Consumer Choices. A marketplace of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. 10. You Matter More

The Benefits of Buying Local Food It’s fresh. Buying local food means there is less time between when your food was harvested and when it gets to your table.

It supports local economy. Buying from local farmers supports businesses in your community, aiding the overall local economy.

It’s better for the environment. Local foods require less packaging and travel less distances, saving on waste and pollution.

It creates access to food experts. Buying local food creates the opportunity for you to build a relationship with your food supplier, learning about what he or she knows best—food.

It’s better for you. Local foods are more nutritious: food loses vitamins and minerals as it ages.

How the Multiplier Effect works

When I Was Young When I was a young man, I wanted to change the world. I found it was difficult to change the world, so I tried to change my nation. When I found I couldn't change the nation, I began to focus on my town. I couldn't change the town and as an older man, I tried to change my family.

Now, as an old man, I realize the only thing I can change is myself, and suddenly I realize that if long ago I had changed myself, I could have made an impact on my family. My family and I could have made an impact on our town. Their impact could have changed the nation and I could indeed have changed the world.

County Championships Motions to change the county senior hurling championship were deferred for consideration in January at November’s county board meeting last week. Changes have been agreed to the senior football championship and the intermediate hurling championship. Full details of all changes will be circulated to clubs and will be available on the Tipperary website in due course. In summary the senior football championship will be run on a group basis with the intention of reducing the number of clubs participating to a maximum of 16 by 2017. The divisional championships will be on a straight knock-out basis. The intermediate hurling championship will be run on a county wide group basis with Divisions left to organise their own divisional championships. The divisional winners will be guaranteed a place in the preliminary quarter-finals. Relegation will be used if needed to keep the maximum number of teams to 24.

Youth Forum A Youth Forum for Transition Year students organised by the County Youth Committee was held last Friday in The Dome, Semple Stadium. Over fifty students from ten post primary schools participated and they gave excellent feedback from the workshops that discussed a number of topics including Games, GAA and the Community, Clubs, Match Days, Communication and Information Technology. The feedback will be posted on the Tipperary GAA Website and a report will be submitted to the County Board with a view to implementation, where feasible, of some of the ideas and suggestions received from the students. Sean Nugent, County Chairman, addressed the forum and Ken Hogan, Tipperary Under 21 Hurling Manager and Pat Mulcahy, County ASAP Officer gave informative presentations. Thanks are due to John Smith, County Youth Officer, all those that assisted on the day and also to the Post Primary Schools who facilitated us by allowing their students to attend.

Irish People Sue The Banks Hundreds of Irish people have lodged High Court proceedings against banks and building societies alleging fraud and claiming €1 million compensation. A Facebook campaign called Debtoptions is providing advice and support to people who find themselves struggling with their mortgages. Claire Cullinane, one of the instigators claims that the banks were

fraudulent in their activities and broke liquidity laws. The cases cost each litigant €138 in court fees to instigate, which the group insists means that the banks cannot then touch the applicants while the case is pending. A number of videos on YouTube under ‘Irish People Sue The Banks’ feature interviews with some of the people who have lodged cases.

North Tipperary Macra On Friday night last the Monthly meeting of the North Tipperary county executive took place in Quinlan's Pub, Moyne and was hosted by the local Moyne /Templetuohy club. A cheque presentation was held for the "relay for life" fundraiser held earlier in the year. Padraig Moran and Imelda Walsh were on hand to accept a cheque for €3044.12 from the North Tipp Macra committee and thanked them all for their efforts in this regard. The team captain Sarah Guilfoyle congratulated everyone on making the event a huge success. The fantastic team spirit showed by north tipp was evident especially in the long hours of the night and into the morning, the fact that we raised such a substantial sum of money made it all the more worthwhile. She added that we hope to have a team there next year as it is a great cause and way of promoting awareness of

Phil Hogan may end up in High Court over Household Charge The Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan may find himself in the High Court if he fails to answer a number of questions related to the Household Charge according to a letter received by us. A notice, dated 27th November 2012, has been sent to the Minister demanding answers to several questions relating to the Household Charge. Attached to the letter is a copy of a summons to appear in Westport District Court issued to an individual for failing to make a declaration regarding the Household Charge. Hogan was given 72 hours to respond to the letter which was issued by Fitzpatrick Financial Solutions of Portlaoise, Co. Laois. The letter has questions seeking clarification on a range of issues under the following categories :- The summons served, the Household

Charge Bureau, the Household Charge form, the Local Government (Household Charge) Act 2011, Bunreacht na hÉireann and the NonFatal Offences Against The Person Act 1997. The letter states “If you do not answer ALL of the questions in the manner prescribed, we will have no issue standing the €157 required, for our client to take you and your cohorts into the High Court…”

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package. “What food might this contain?” the mouse wondered. He was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap. Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning: “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!” The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head an...d said “Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it.” The mouse turned to the pig and told him “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!” The pig sympathized, but said “I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured you are in my prayers.” The mouse turned to the cow and said “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!” The cow said “Wow, Mr. Mouse. I’m sorry for you, but it’s no skin off my nose.” So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer’s mousetrap alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house – like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey. The farmer’s wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer’s wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital and she returned home with a fever. Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup’s main ingredient. But his wife’s sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. The farmer’s wife did not get well; she died. So many people came for her funeral, the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them. The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness. So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn’t concern you, remember: when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk. We are all involved in this journey called life.......

Van Shelving

These are highly intelligent members of the crow family and are very familiar birds of our streets and gardens. Traditionally they would have nested in tree holes and cliff ledges but the chimney pots on our roofs make an ideal substitute. Near my house they nest each year in tall conifer trees that sway dramatically in the wind. This can lead them into conflict with people as they will keep on dropping sticks down the chimney but this can be easily avoided by placing a cowl over the pot.

The Urban Countryside - The Jackdaw The meeting had been running for several hours and my attention was starting to wane. Thankfully a short break was called and I strolled over to the window to see if anything interesting was happening. I had an excellent view from the top floor and the streets were full of casual shoppers but very little wildlife. Next i scanned the roof tops and was delighted to find a pair of Jackdaws resting on the slates of an adjacent building.

Jackdaws eat a wide variety of food from earthworms, seeds, caterpillars and scraps discarded by people. When they are feeding they move like clockwork toys with short jerky movements.

green moss. On the old red brick chimney Polypody ferns were growing in profusion. This was a secret world that we rarely get to see and I felt very privileged to be able to experience it.

A few years ago a friend of mine was repairing a roof and Jackdaws were building their nest in the chimney. I jumped at the opportunity to get a closer look at their nesting habitats. I balanced precariously on the ridge and gently peered inside. The nest was located about two feet down on a narrow ledge. It was constructed of grass and scraps of newspapers and their were small pieces of shiny paper scattered around the nest. Usually they would use sticks but these can be in short supply in a city center and this shows the adaptability of these birds. The parents returned nosily and I quickly moved back. The Jackdaws also had their own secret garden. The old slates were covered in colourful lichens and instead of a lawn there was lush

Jackdaws are very social birds and have a wide repertoire of calls for communicating. They can become very tame if you feed them regularly and this lead to a very strange incident. I have been feeding the Jackdaws at the front of my house for years and each Spring I would follow their nesting antics and with parental interest the first flight of the chicks. The young birds utter a distinctive begging call that stimulates the adults to give them food. I was the sitting room when I heard a fierce commotion outside. I went outside to investigate and found that one of the fledglings had been killed by a car. Naturally I removed it from the road and I can still hear the harsh calls of the assembled birds.

Suddenly they took flight and did not return to my house for several weeks. Was I in some way held responsible for the untimely death? This is question that I have never been able to satisfactory answer. The short break is over and I return to my seat and leave the mysteries of the Jackdaws for another day.

Prayers The Miraculous Prayer – Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I’ve asked for many favours. This time I ask You this very special one (mention favour). Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. N.D. The Miraculous Prayer – Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I’ve asked for many favours. Counselling Anxiety By Jim O’Shea For a number of years I have been exploring a number of painful psychological problems (depression being the last one) to help you understand the nature of these complaints, and how you might ease them, or, better still, get rid of them altogether. Sometimes understanding them can bring ease, and perhaps do away with the guilt that some people have, because of merely having such painful issues. It might be helpful to remind ourselves that we are not responsible for our feelings, but we are responsible for our behaviour. As I write these articles, Ireland is in the grip of a deep recession. By the time they are published things may have changed. As of now, hundreds of thousands of people have lost their jobs, and thousands have had their wages cut. A great number of people are struggling to pay their mortgages, and many are unable to do so. Budgets are harsh, and, while most people understand that sacrifices have to be made, they are frustrated at the message that seems to be coming from the political establishment - financial stability is more important than people. Pouring money into irresponsible banks seems to be more important than catering for vulnerable people in terms of health and education. The Irish public have had to endure the statement from a spokesperson of Fitch, a ratings agency, that his organisation was concerned at the low rate of repossessions in Ireland. It reminded me of the Establishment during the Famine, who secretly rejoiced at the eviction rate and the prospect of larger farms, when the unfortunate tenants had left for America. The current state of commentary on Ireland’s woes is surely sufficient to induce anxiety in most people about all the uncertainty and the harsh budgets that lie ahead. Surveys have shown that many people fear that their standard of living will be reduced, and others are terrified that they will lose their homes. While I keep in touch with what is happening in the context of the economic misery, I don’t expose myself to too much bad news. I have stopped buying those newspapers that seem to wallow in misery. Of course, I do not avoid the bad news that is in the media, I simply limit the time that I spend reading or listening about it. Anxiety is a widespread reality that all of us experience at some stage of our lives. Indeed mild anxiety can be beneficial and help us perform better. It is a natural reaction to danger or painful situations. We do not like feeling anxious, but normal or mild anxiety is a positive part of our lives. It is natural to fear danger, and anxiety helps us to focus on different tasks or problems and deal with them in a more efficient way. An anxious reaction is an ancient part of human evolution to deal with a perilous stressor. The human’s nervous system releases a chemical called adrenalin when facing a

stressor that indicates extreme danger. This enables the threatened human to react by running or fighting. The heart beats faster to supply the muscles with extra oxygen and energy for either flight or fight. Long ago, this was a response to threats from wild beasts or from attacks by neighbouring tribes. We should not confuse anxiety with worry or fear. Sometimes they are closely related, but worry, for example, may arise if we have too much negative thinking or self-talk. Our life style and how we are socialised can lead to worry. For example, if we overwork, eat the wrong type of food, have insufficient rest and sleep, and feel that it is ‘strong’ to carry all our burdens, we are leaving ourselves open to worry. Anxiety. What promotes it? While mild anxiety visits all of us and is beneficial, many people experience a more severe type of anxiety. Some studies estimate that 33% of people experience moderate to severe anxiety at some time in their lives. We are uncertain about the sources or causes of severe anxiety. Some psychologists feel that it may have a genetic root, and others argue that it is a learned behaviour in a family. Dr Edmund J. Bourne, who is a psychologist in northern California specializing in the treatment of anxiety disorders and related problems, and author of several books, including the bestselling Anxiety &Phobia Workbook, highlights 10 aspects that foster and maintain anxiety and phobias. Knowing these is a good way to help defeat this painful complaint. The first one, which I will mention again in different contexts, is of anxiety-producing situations. Another one is anxious selftalk, which will be looked at later also.
