Flynn O’Kane Academy Of Dance September is here and another very exciting year of dance has begun at Flynn O’Kane Academy!! Bernadette and Damien have really achieved the goals and aims that are so important for their Academy which has gone from strength to strength. Their students are growing a real passion for dance while also learning the art of performance. This year’s Flynn O’Kane Summer Dance Camp proved to be a huge success with the end of camp show being testament to what they are working towards.
year five of their students will travel to Boston USA to compete in the 2013 World Irish Dance Championships. Bernadette and Damien also managed to keep their ties with Lord of the Dance this summer when they were invited to dance the lead roles in the hit show ‘Feet of Flames’. This supercharged version of LOTD with over one hundred dancers toured Taiwan and played to stadium audiences over the two week tour.
On the competitive scene, their students have really excelled in the world of Irish Dance. At Easter this year they had their first medal holder at the World Championships and in May had their first Irish National Championship title. In March next

North Tipp Macra Recruitment Drive North Tipp Macra Launches Recruitment Drive “Macra na Feirme in North Tipperary has developed at a huge pace over the past twelve months”. The Chairperson of North Tipperary Macra, Tim Maher told a meeting of the county executive in Nenagh last week that ”If we wish to continue that development we must seek to expand. Therefore, we are inviting any community which wishes to bring Macra to their area to contact us and we will come to them and provide the supports necessary to get a club off the ground,” The chairman reminded members to recruit not only in their own clubs but in n eighbouring areas too.

Macra na Feirme is an organisation for young people between the ages of 17 and 35 who are interested in meeting new people and getting involved in sports, travel, drama, debating, or just want to meet new people and have some fun!
To be a member of Macra, you must join a Macra club in your area. This will open the door to new friends and new activities. There are hundreds of clubs across Ireland bursting with activity who always welcome a new face. Congratulations are in order for county officers Tim and Catherine Maher who won Silver Macra Leadership Distinction Awards representing North Tipperary. Their Awards were presented to them at a special banquet held in the West County Hotel, Ennis last weekend. The first meeting / information night of the new Thurles Macra club will take place on Wednesday 5th September at 9pm in the back room of Jim Kennedys, Parnell St., Thurles. Tipperary GAA Scene By Ger Ryan PRO Tipperary Win All Ireland Intermediate Hurling Final Congratulations to the Intermediate hurlers and management on their 3-13 to 1-17 win over Kilkenny to secure the title for the first time since 2000 after what turned out to be a tension filled and exciting second half. Although Tipp lead by 12 points at half time after playing with the wind, Kilkenny came right into the game in the second half. A great penalty save from James Logue near the end kept Tipperary in front and they held on for a deserved victory. Special mention goes to Mikey Heffernan of Nenagh Eire Og who has now won All Ireland medals at 4 different grades of hurling – minor, under 21, intermediate and senior. successive year in the final, they were defeated by Galway last year. Tipperary are seeking their nineteenth title and first since 2007 while Dublin are seeking their fifth title and first since 1965. Tipperary have defeated Kerry, Waterford, Clare and Galway en route to the final. Dublin lost to Wexford in their opening Leinster championship game but subsequently went on to defeat Carlow, Kilkenny and Wexford to win the Leinster championship and Clare in the All-Ireland semi-final. The game will be refereed by Colm Lyons of Cork.
Tipperary County Board would like to thank Declan Ryan, Tommy Dunne and Michael Gleeson for all their good work managing the senior hurling team over the last two years. It should not be forgotten that they led the team to two Munster championships and their record should not be judged solely on performances against Kilkenny. They have all served the county well for many years and we look forward to their continued involvement in the GAA in the county. We wish them and their families well for the future. A committee led by County Chairman, Sean Nugent, will now select a new management team for recommendation to County Board. Anti Eviction Taskforce Launch Tipperary Group An independent group of home owners that decided to band together and unite in a concerted effort to protect all homes against repossession has launched a nationwide campaign to establish groups in every county in Ireland including Tipperary The group, calling itself the AntiEviction Taskforce (AET) has grown in numbers at a tremendous pace. A high profile case in Limerick which has gained international attention has highlighted the issue. Father of five, Seamus Sherlock, who famously chained himself outside ESB headquarters in protest at their treatment of people who had fallen into arrears and subsequently set up the organisation 'life after Debt' to assist others struggling with debt, received an eviction notice some weeks ago. He sent out a call for help and was inundated with offers of assistance from people willing to assist him and his children who have barricaded themselves into their farm. Packages of food, living essentials and even portacabins for volunteers to sleep in have been donated. A 24 hour security watch has been set up on the farm to prevent the eviction.
On their website the AET state that they "will turn out in numbers to offer a physical presence to homes under immediate threat and will have legal observers at each attempted eviction to document, record, offer advice and act upon any issues that are considered dubious or illegal". The AET work together with the People for Economic Freedom who also take direct action and campaign against evictions stating that they are unconstitutional. They recently assisted an 80 year old woman in Blanchardstown arriving just after the Sheriff had left and a locksmith had changed the locks. Both groups update their activities on Facebook and publish their campaigns on YouTube

The Quartet is also offering a workshop to guitar players interested in developing their skills. The workshop takes place in the Arts Centre on the day before – Friday 21st. The two-hour event is open to all types of guitar players at all levels as players will be grouped according to their skills. This is a great opportunity for players of all styles, rock, jazz, classical and folk to expand their range on the guitar. The following day, the Quartet’s concert will include a mix of celebrated works of the guitar quartet repertoire and modern classics by internationally acclaimed composers such Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Henryk Gorecki and Arvo Part. In March of 2004, Lyric FM broadcast their Mermaid Arts
Centre concert over two installments of the ‘Horizons’ programme. This concert included a world premiere of Four Guitars by internationally acclaimed composer Kevin Volans. The DGQ have played as guests of ‘rock’ groups such as The Redneck Manifesto (Dublin) and Final Fantasy (Canada) performing in venues such as Vicar St., Whelan’s of Wexford Street, the Project Arts Centre, Crawdaddy and the Roisin Dubh, Galway. The concert will take place at 9 p.m. on Saturday, 22nd September. Doors open at 8 p.m. Admission is €15 and tickets are available from Nenagh Arts Centre in Banba Square on 067 34400. Counselling Depression

Yet, I suppose depression has not played a big part in my life, although my therapist once told me that I had a low level of ongoing anxiety in the context of my job as a school Principal. That did not surprise me, and I was glad to hear the words ‘low level’! I’m not sure if this translated into a low level of chronic depression. I think it did, and an American clinical psychologist Joseph Carver is correct when he argues that ongoing stress is likely to lead to depression. Sometimes, in my own case I could not put my finger on why I felt a low level of depression or anxiety. But when I look back I realise that I overworked, carrying some remnant of grief within me, and gradually over the years a sense of fatigue and low energy set in. But I worked hard had pleasurable hobbies but eventually ran out of steam! Perhaps, I was merely acting in accordance with Western culture seeing depression as a weakness, and using what some researchers have described as described as greater willpower and greater personal effort. I ran what I think was a very good school, was indefatigable from morning to night, and managed 612 students, 44 teachers, and other ancillary workers with a good measure of efficiency, and greatly pleased most of the parents of the students.
To make matters worse I had taken that job within two years of my youngest child being killed in a road accident in 1990. That tragedy resulted in major depression for me. The book that I wrote with the help of my family (when a Child Dies. Footsteps of a Grieving Family) outlines some of that depression as a constant state of unease, no peace, fear and terror, and living in a different internal world. The absence of depression to me is being integrated in the ‘normal’ world. For a short time I only had a tentative connection with this world. When I was teaching I could hear my voice as if it were at a distance. There was no desire to live; no enthusiasm for getting up in the morning. The joy was gone from my life. I would have preferred to be dead than to carry this empty feeling throughout the day. I was exhausted, dejected, gloomy, unhappy, and shrouded in pessimism. I could not shake off this overhanging cloud that blighted my life. Outwardly, however, I smiled and worked, and carried this pain with me into my new job in 1992.
I had an angiogram in 2004, and the doctor remarked on the amount of adrenalin surrounding my heart. In effect I had one of the hidden physical symptoms of anxiety. At the same time, most Principals will admit that it is a difficult job, and many end up worn out by it. Of course, I spent some of my time training as a counsellor at that stage, and this training is an emotionally difficult experience. I suppose the combination of this training and my job was too much for me.
