Launch of Borrisokane Local Switch Association by Duncan Stewart Plans to create 50 new jobs This coming Saturday, 14th July, sees the launch of a brand new initiative in Borrisokane. In association with LocalSwitch Ireland, Borrisokane Local Switch Association will be opening their information point on Main Street. The association plans to create 50 jobs for the Borrisokane area over the next 5 years, through the creation of local, user-owned enterprises and encouraging people to use their spending power locally. Visitors will have an opportunity to hear about and see some of the projects already underway. The
launch will be introduced by enthusiastic supporter Duncan Stewart, presenter of "About the House", who will also be hosting a question and answer session. Locals Donna McLoughlin, Miriam Lewis, Catriona Lennon, Aidan Claffey, Sean Egan and James Haugh, all founding members of Borrisokane LSA, will also be on hand to answer your questions. The event starts at 2pm, in the Local switch Info-point at the corner of Main Street and Town Park Road. Refreshments will be served, and all are welcome to attend.

The Gathering Ireland 2013 North Tipperary will host a community meeting in advance of The Gathering Ireland 2013, the national tourism initiative launched earlier this year by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny. A special Community Meeting will take place in the Abbey Court Hotel, Nenagh on Thursday 26th July at 7.00pm. All are welcome to attend the meeting which will offer an opportunity for local people to learn more about ‘The Gathering’ and how they can be involved. Anyone with ideas for a ‘Gathering’ can pledge them online after the meeting. They will also be able to access tools and supports online to help them to organise their Gatherings. Gathering Community Meetings will be held throughout Ireland in the year
ahead. Local Gathering organisations are being set up in every county, comprising a range of organisations. These include sporting bodies, cultural and musical groups, local authorities, and local development companies and other bodies. Community projects already underway throughout Ireland include clan gatherings, genealogical projects, school reunions, twin-town visits and an outreach initiative where local communities will contact people who have left the country. Waterford have a history of surprising Tipperary in major games, when the Premier County are favourites. Examples are the 1959 Munster Semi final in Cork, when Tipp were defending Munster and All Ireland Champions ( 9-3 to 3-4), the 1963 Munster final at Limerick when Tipp, who had trounced Waterford in the previous two finals, at the Gaelic Grounds, lost both Munster and All Ireland titles (0-11 to 0-8), the NHL’’ Home’’ Final same year ( 2-15 to 4-7 ), the 1983 Munster semi final in Cork, when Tipp were on the way back having beaten Clare in the first round, but were surprised ( 4-13 to 2-15), 1998 semi final at Cork ,when Tipp had been Munster and All Ireland runners up to Clare the previous year (0-21 to 2-12), the 2002 Munster final in Cork when Tipp, the reigning All Ireland champions, were again relieved of
Tipp v Waterford in Cork Tipperary and Waterford have met in the Championship at Cork (Cork Athletic Grounds or Pairc Ui Chaoimh) on 14 occasions – Tipperary have won 9 and Waterford 5. Dating back to 1998, Waterford have won 3 of the last 6 matches with Tipperary that were played at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
Second bite 2006 was unusual in Waterford /Tipp rivalry, because it was only the second time the counties had more than one meeting in the championship, the same year. (There was a Waterford win in a 1933 replay). Tipp won the Munster Semi final meeting in Cork in June, by 3-14 to 1-12 on a day that Waterford had several injury problems and Lar Corbett scored his first championship goal against them. Waterford came back to get their revenge in a Croke Park Quarter final, hitting an impressive 1-22 to win by 3 points. Their season ended in agonising circumstances when Cork beat them by 1-16 to 1-15 in the semi final.

Brendan Cummins, who was born on May 11th 1975, is the oldest player on the Tipperary SH panel while Sean Curran, who was born on the September 15th 1991, an honour he took this year from Noel McGrath who remains second youngest on the panel.
The attendance at last year’s Munster final – same teams , same venue- was 36,654 while 40,330 were at Semple Stadium for the 2009 decider. The Decies’ breakthrough win in 2002 brought 40,276 patrons to Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Their previous final meeting in 1989 also at Pairc Ui Chaoimh drew a crowd of only 30,241. While that was the 100th Munster Final and Waterford had beaten Clare and Cork to qualify, the ‘live’ television broadcast kept many people at home. After that Final, the Tipp Captain Bobby Ryan received the Munster Cup from Provincial Chairman and former Tipp full back, Michael Maher. Bobby was the first Tipp captain to lift the cup in Cork since his uncle Pat Stakelum RIP had done so in 1949.
Family Ties Captain Paul Curran and his brother Sean are both on the panel as are Shane and Donagh Maher. John Coghlan’s brother Hugh is vicecaptain on the senior football panel. Noel McGrath’s brother John is on the minor hurling and football panels. Their first cousins Liam and Aidan McGrath are also on the under 21 hurling panel and Liam captained the Tipperary minor football team to All Ireland success last year. Padraic Maher’s brother Ronan is on the minor hurling panel and his first cousin, Denis Maher is on the under 21 hurling panel. Patrick Maher’s brother Willie, Tom Stapleton’s brother Brian and Brian O’Meara’s brother, Niall are all on the under 21 hurling panel. Pa Bourke and Johnny Ryan on the senior panel are first cousins as are Gearóid and Adrian Ryan.
Average Age 25 is the average age of the Tipperary senior hurling panel at present. There are seven players over 30 on the panel and none under 20.
Successful outings Tipperary have appeared in 64 Munster Finals and won 39.There have been many memorable occasions over the years but for those who were there it would be hard to match the emotion of Killarney on July 19th 1987 – the day the Tipperary captain and Dublin selector of recent years, Richard Stakelum, proudly declared ‘’The famine is over’’.
Big interest The 2008 All Ireland Semi final meeting at Croke Park produced a record championship crowd of 53,635 for a Tipperary v. Waterford fixture.
Goal less In the history of this championship rivalry, there have only been two games which failed to produce a goal. The 1963 Munster final and the first round meeting in 2000 were the only occasions that there was no green flag. There has been an average of just over 5 goals per game over the 38 championship matches. There were 7 in the last championship encounter in 2011 and 4 in 2010.

Declan Ryan (Clonoulty Rossmore), Tommy Dunne (Toomevara) and Michael Gleeson (Thurles Sarsfields) are in their second season in charge of the Tipperary Senior Hurling team. Declan Ryan was Manager of the Tipperary minor hurling team in 2007 when they won the All Irleand title. Tommy Dunne was coach and Michael Gleeson was a selector. Tommy Dunne was coach to the Tipperary U-21 team which won the 2010 All Ireland title and was also Manager of the Toomevara senior hurling team in 2010. Michael Gleeson managed Thurles Sarsfields to victory in the Tipperary senior hurling championship in 2009 and 2010 and has also managed Thurles Sarsfields minor teams to win county titles in both hurling and football. Declan Ryan won three All Ireland senior hurling medals with Tipperary in 1989, 1991 and 2001. He played 41 championship games for Tipperary between 1988 and 2001, scoring 9-64 in 26 wins, 4 draws and 11 defeats. He represented Tipperary at minor and under 21 levels and captained the under 21 team to win Munster and All Ireland titles in 1989. He also won 4 National Hurling League medals, 5 Munster senior hurling championship medals, 2 All Star awards and 2 county senior hurling championship medals with his club, Clonoulty Rossmore, in 1989 and 1997. Tommy Dunne captained Tipperary to win the All Ireland senior hurling title in 2001 and was named Hurler of the Year in 2001. He played 44 championship games for Tipperary between 1993 and 2005, scoring 6109 in 24 wins, 4 draws and 16 defeats. He won an All Ireland under 21 hurling medal in 1995 and also represented Tipperary at minor in 1991 and

Michael Gleeson played senior hurling for Tipperary against Clare in the 1977 Munster senior hurling championship. He also played in the 1975/76 and 76/77 National Hurling Leagues. He played senior hurling with Thurles Sarsfields for 10 years between 1974 and 1983, winning a county championship medal in 1974 and 3 Mid Division senior hurling medals. He began his career in team management with the Durlas Óg club in Thurles and has made a major contribution to the recent revival in the fortunes of Thurles Sarsfields at underage and adult level. Trainer Ross Dunphy is in his first year as Strength and Conditioning Coach (Trainer) to the Tipperary Senior Hurling team. 33year-old Ross is a native of Wexford and holds a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Limerick. Ross is from the Clonard GAA Club in Wexford town and has represented Wexford at all levels of Gaelic Football. Ross has been involved in coaching both hurling and Gaelic football since 2004. He trained the Toomevara senior hurling team for three seasons and the Kildare U21's in 2009. He has also been on the coaching and management team with Sarsfields GAA club in Newbridge County Kildare over the past few seasons

By County PRO Ger Ryan Munster Senior Hurling Final We extend best wishes for success to the Tipperary senior hurlers and management for theMunster senior hurling final against Waterford on Sunday next July 15 at 4pm at Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Tipperary will be seeking their 40th Munster senior hurling title while Waterfordare seeking their 10th title. Tickets are still on sale for the game and supporters are reminded that tickets will be €5 cheaper if purchased in advance of Sunday. The winners will qualify for the All Ireland semifinal on August 19 while the losers qualify for the All Ireland quarter-finals on July 29 along with Kilkenny and the winners of Cork v Wexford and Limerick v Clare.
Electric Ireland Munster Minor Hurling Final Tipperary will attempt to win their first Munster minor hurling title since 2007 when they take on 3-in-a-row seeking Clare at Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Sunday next July 15 at 2pm. Tipperary V Wexford Senior Football Good luck to the Tipperary senior footballers and management for their All Ireland senior football championship round 2 game against Wexford on Saturday afternoon, July 14 at 3pm. Tipperary and Wexford last met in a championship game inn 2005 when Tipperarywon the Tommy Murphy Cup final by 3-10 to 0-15 at Croke Park. Their only other senior football championship meeting was the 1918 All Ireland final which was played on February 16 1919 at Croke Park and which Wexford won by 0-5 to 0-4 to capture their 4th consecutive title.

Congratulations to the Tipperary minor footballers and management on retaining the Munster minor title by defeating Kerry by 2-14 to 1-14 after coming back from a 7 point half time deficit at Pairc na nGael in Limerick. This is the first time for Tipperary to retain the title since 1935 and the first time Kerry have ever lost 2 Munster minor football championship games in the same season. Tipperary will play the losers of the Connachtminor football final between Mayo and Roscommon which will be played next Sunday.
Hurling Qualifiers Semple Stadium will be busy on Saturday with the Tipperary v Wexford football game followed by the round 3 hurling qualifiers between Cork and Wexford at 5pm and Limerick and Clare at 7pm. Johnny Ryan of Boherlahan Dualla will referee the Cork v Wexford game and we wish him and his umpires and linesmen well.

Newport/Ballinahinch Camogie Feile Champions Congratulations to Newport/Ballinahinch Camogie Club who defied all the odds by winning the All Ireland Division 1 Camogie Feile na nGael last weekend. On Thursday, they defeated their hosts Lucan Sarsfields on

their home ground and followed this up at the same venue on Friday with victories over St Judes Dublin and Pilltown Kilkenny to finish top of their group. In the semi final on Friday night they saw off Ballyboden Gaels in a tight battle at a wet and heavy St Perigrines GAA Grounds in Blanchardstown with the final score 2-0 to 0-3. On Saturday it was a dream come true for these young girls to play on the sacred sod of Croke Park and their dream seemed to be under threat as an appeal from the other semi final looked like causing a deferment. Despite a three and a half hour delay the final went ahead with Davitts of Galway as opposition. The game was close all through until the Tipp representatives scored two goals in the final minutes to end up worthy winners on a scoreline 3-3 to 0-2. Well done to this wonderful team fromNewport, Birdhill, Ballinahinch and Rearcross which only two years ago was playing in “C” competition and has proven what hard work and commitment can achieve. Hard luck to Kilruane MacDonaghs, Tipp’s representatives in the Féile Hurling, who won their opening game against their hosts Clontarf but lost to Na Fianna and Sarsfields in their other group games.
Thurles Sarsfields International Hurling Festival July 13 and 14 next will see over one thousand players from Ireland and overseas descend on Thurles for a two day International Festival of Hurling with teams from all over Ireland and Lodon competing for the Tom Semple Cup, which will be defended by London side, Kilburn Gaels. In association with the GAA, Thurles Sarsfields GAA Club, Shannon Development and a host of regional partnerships and bodies, the two day weekend event will serve up a feast of hurling activity with clubs and teams competing for a range of cups and silverware. Events taking place
include the Association’s social and recreational game, Camán Abú which will be showcased competitively at the Ursuline Convent Thurles on Saturday, July 14. Any club or social team can participate. For full details on entering, visitjustplay.gaa.ie. The European Board will also play the final round of their European Hurling and Camogie Championships in Thurles on Saturday, July 14. Teams from Switzerland,Sweden, Luxembourg , Netherlands, France, Belgium and Spa in amongst others will compete over the course of the day to become the 2012 European Champions. Among the events will be Hurl Ball and Road Bowling. Hurl ball is played in handball alleys with players using their hurleys in a new game largely based on handball rules. It is growing in popularity among current and former players. In Road Bowling, the Michael Cusack Cup will be presented to the winners of a special interprovincial men’s competition, which will have contestants representing all four provinces.
