Cappawhite Pupils Visit Áras an Uachtaráin On Wednesday June 13th, pupils and teachers from Cappawhite N.S. were honoured to be invited to visit Áras an Uachtaráin. On arrival, they were greeted by Sergeant John Grennan, from the aide- de camp's office. All pupils received refreshments as they entered the state reception room. This was followed by a guided tour of the official state rooms of the Aras. These included portraits of all the former presidents and the state room, where President Mary McAleese met with Queen Elizabeth II last year. Ms. Quigley,the school's deputy principal, was also invited to play on the Steinway piano in the Áras. The highlight, of the tour, however, was being introduced to

The Punt In Borrisoleigh Businesses in the town of Borrisoleigh in County Tipperary have started accepting the old Irish Punt as payment for goods and services. The local traders hope it will encourage people to dig out those old notes and coins that may be resting in jam jars around the town and that people from outside the area might visit to spend their old currency. Although the Punt is no longer legal tender since it was discontinued in 2002 the Central Bank will still exchange Irish pound notes and coins for Euros. The town of Clones Co. Monaghan has recently hit the headlines where dozens of businesses have agreed to accept the punt. The town of Murgados in Northern Spain re-introduced the Peseta alongside the Euro earlier this year. Local Borrisoleigh businessman Derry O Donnell who publishes the Tipp Tatler contacted a number of local businesses with the suggestion.
He said “I was inspired by the Clones example and contacted a few people. Everyone was pretty keen on the idea, so far nearly a dozen local businesses that I’ve spoken to have agreed to accept the old Irish Punt. I expect more businesses that I didn’t get a chance to speak with will join the initiative once they hear about it. It’s a great way to hopefully give a bit of a boost to the town’s businesses. Walk The Burren for a Good Cause Mid-Tipp Hillwalkers recent summer climbing expedition to the English Lake District was a great success in good weather. On the first day a large group completed Scafell Pike the highest mountain in Britain. This marked the completion of the four peaks challenge (climbing the highest mountains of each country on these islands) for Dan Condren, Templemore; Marianne Cleary, Thurles; Ollie Walsh, Moyne; Bridget Browne, Moycarkey and Tom Cummins, Graigue. This group then went on to ascend the famous Broad Stand rockclimbing route on Scafell under the leadership of Dan Condren. On the following day, Josephine Tobin led a circuit of Helvellyn while including traverses of the captivating Striding Edge and Swirral ridges. Meanwhile, John G O'Dwyer, Joan Quinn, Bridget Browne, Winnie Flynn, and Dan Condren broke away from the main bunch to ascend the famous vertical pillar of Napes Needle. The Hairy Tulip competition takes place at the Abbey Court Hotel Nenagh this Saturday the 30th of June at 8pm and tickets are now on sale at the Abbey Court Hotel. The competition has been building for some months now with 18 men from across the County dressing up and competing in a beauty pageant competition. All contestants have had ball gown fittings and the make-up artists are on hand to beautify the men. The lineup for the competition includes Miss Spanner, Mis Laid, Mis Treat, Scarlett Charlotte, Miss Tess Tickles and Connie Della Haney. Of course the competition wouldn’t be complete without our very own Mrs Brown!! The final decision rests with the judges on the evening as to who will be crowned The Hairy Tulip.

Fun Cycle In Aid Of Minor Footballers The Friends of Tipperary Football are running a fun cycle in aid of the Tipperary Minor Footballers on Saturday July 21st. The cycle will start at the Nenagh Eire Og GAA Complex at MacDonagh Park, Nenagh at 9.30am and proceed to Clonmel via Roscrea, Templemore, Thurles, Horse & Jockey, Cashel and Cahir. It will culminate with a family fun day at the GAA Centre in Clonmel commencing at 3.30pm which will include a BBQ, Music and Children’s events. All are welcome to participate for some or all of the 132km route. Entry fee is €20 or sponsorship cards are also available. Learn from Elephants As my friend was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from the ropes they were tied to but for some reason, they did not. My friend saw a trainer nearby and asked why these beautiful, magnificent animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. "Well," he said, "when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it's enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to
believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free." My friend was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn't, they were stuck right where they were. Like the elephants, how many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before? So make an attempt to grow further.... Why shouldn't we try it again? Your attempt may fail, but never fail to make an attempt & CHOOSE not to accept the false boundaries and limitations created by the past.

Duncan Stewart To Speak At Green Business Network Showcase in Cloughjordan A special event, which is being held in Cloughjordan this month as part of the Totally Tipperary day of Cloughjordan Festival, will promote businesses from Tipperary with a community, ecological or local focus. The showcase event is being organised by the Tipperary Green Business Network and is taking place in the GAA Complex in Cloughjordan on Saturday the 30th of June. The event will feature talks from experts, networking sessions and a clinic designed to help businesses consider how to save money and increase their market by going green. Duncan Stewart will explain why the green economy makes sense and will lead a tour of the ecovillage highlighting the green business elements of the world renowned community project. Stalls from businesses and agencies from across the county will also be displaying their products and services. This
event, which opens at 10.30am and runs until 4.30pm, is free to the public. Female-Run Food Businesses on Winning Menu at Network Awards Two food business entrepreneurs have claimed top honours at a Business Network Awards Ceremony in Tipperary on June 19th. Margaret O’ Connor, who helped to turn the Quigley’s chain of bakery cafes into a multi-million euro business employing over 150 people, and Elaine Dorris, who set up Lough Derg Chocolates with her husband just seven months ago, both won top awards at the Network North Tipperary Business Women of the Year Awards, sponsored by AIB. O’Connor, the joint Managing Director of Quigley’s, joined the 5th generation family business in 1988, helping to grow the company from just one outlet to sixteen café outlets across nine counties. O’Connor was presented with the ‘Existing Business’ award by Martin Troy, Branch Manager of AIB Nenagh at the awards ceremony, which took place at the Fairways Bar and Orchard Restaurant in Nenagh earlier this evening (June 19th). Elaine Dorris, who had previously worked in the construction industry before taking redundancy in 2008, was presented with the ‘Emerging Business’ Award by Rita Guinan, CEO from the Tipperary North County Enterprise Board. Dorris and her husband, Malachy, set up the hand-made luxury chocolate company in Nenagh, just before Christmas 2011. “Our winning entrepreneurs clearly have a passion for food and for business and are both incredibly focussed on achieving their company objectives,” said Fiona Connolly, the President of Network North Tipperary. “Although our two winners are at very different stages in the business life cycle, they both
exhibit key entrepreneurial characteristics. According to the judging panel, both entrepreneurs were energetic, measured risk-takers and both had an understanding of how important their teams were to the success of the business.” Margaret Ryan from Storm Web Management took the runner-up prize in the ‘Existing Business’ category and Camelia Shanahan from Meli Bondre came runner-up in the category for ‘Emerging Business’. Towards the end of the ceremony, the Tipperary-born humanitarian aid worker and writer, Adi Roche, was presented with an honorary award, ‘Tipperary Woman of the Year’, by the President of the Network. This is the second annual Network North Tipperary Business Women of the Year Awards and last year’s winners were Anne Marie Walsh from The Tipperary Kitchen in the ‘Existing Business’ category and Louisa Condon from The Ant Team in the ‘Emerging Business’ category. Other 2012 shortlisted nominees this year included Una Ryan from Marketing Eye, Emma D’Arcy from Integral Marketing (both ‘Emerging Business’ nominees), Georgina Kearney O’Dwyer & Helen O’ Dwyer from George Lang Hair Group and Joan McGowan from the Fairways Bar and Orchard Restaurant (both ‘Established Business’ nominees). Dry Needling is an invasive procedure in which a solid filament needle is inserted into the skin and muscle directly at a myofascial trigger point. A myofascial trigger point consists of multiple contraction knots which are related to the production and maintenance of a patients pain cycle.
Typically it takes several visits for a positive reaction to take place. In essence, your chartered physiotherapist is trying to create mechanical and biochemical changes which takes time. Therefore, we are looking for a cumulative response to achieve a certain threshold after which the pain cycle is changed. Dry Needling is often utilized in the clinic as just one of many modalities we utilize along with stretching, strengthening, etc. Treatment will continue until either there are no palpable Myofascial Trigger points, or until the patients complaints have been alleviated.
Historically, Deep Dry Needling is primarily a Western technique, which was first explored and recorded by President John F. Kennedy’s doctors, Dr. Janet Travell and Dr. David Simons. How Dry Needling exactly works is not known, but we do know that is has mechanical and biomechanical effects. Based on the continued and pioneering research by Dr. Jay Shaw and colleagues at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, we know that inserting the needle into the trigger point can cause favourable biomechanical changes which assists in decreasing patients pain. Dry Needling can be used for a variety of musculoskeletal problems in which muscles are considered to be the primary contributing factor to the signs and symptoms. Such conditions include, but are not

A great community effort has swung into action to raise funds to build a children’s playground in Clonoulty. The playground has already been designed and a site within the GAA grounds has been generously donated by Clonoulty-Rossmore GAA. This wonderful new facility will boast state of the art play equipment from the Crazy Daisy, Gym and Play Panels for the younger age groups, to the Wobble Bridge, Spinner Bowl and Supernova for older children. “This new facility, set in the heart of the Parish, will provide a very welcome addition to the area. It will offer a wide range of equipment and will provide challenging play for young children of all abilities, as well as being a positive social gathering place for the local community for

Unfortunately, as sufferers begin to recover from a bout of major depression they get the energy and the capacity to carry out suicidal thoughts that may have occurred to them early in the bout of depression. It is always hard to know if any particular sufferer will go ahead and complete suicide, but it is certain that even with every precaution being taken a small proportion of depressive people are likely to die by suicide. Major depression with psychotic features carries a higher risk of suicide than major depression alone. It seems, too, that being assimilated into another culture increases the rate of suicide ideation (thinking) among immigrants, especially young people. You may recall that at the beginning of these articles I said that there were two broad forms of depression, unipolar and bipolar. I would now like to leave unipolar (being down) depression for a while, and quickly explore bipolar depression which is characterised by episodes of highs and lows (hence bipolar meaning two opposite poles). This used be termed manic depression. The highs are referred to as mania or hypomania. Mania is defined as a period of abnormally and persistently elevated or irritable mood lasting at least 1 week and combining with at least four of the following symptoms - inflated selfesteem, grandiosity (being pompous), decreased need for sleep, much talkativeness, racing thoughts, poor concentration, being easily distracted, and being inclined to be over involved in pleasurable but risky behaviours.
