Two confirmed bachelors sat talking. Their conversation drifted from politics to cooking. "I got a cookbook once," said the first, "but I could never do anything with it." "Too much fancy cooking in it, eh?" asked the second. "You said it. Every one of the recipes began the same way - Take a clean dish and...."

A man was praying to God. He said, "God!?" God responded, "Yes?"

And the guy said, "Can I ask a question?" "Go right ahead," God said. "God, what is a million years to you?" God said, "a million years to me is only a second." "Hmmm," the man wondered. Then he asked, "God, what is a million dollars worth to you?" God said, "a million dollars to me is as a penny." So the man said, "God. Can I have a penny?" And God cheerfully said, "Sure!!.....just a second.

Did you hear about the banker who was recently arrested for embezzling €100,000 to pay for his daughter's college education? As the policeman, who also had a daughter in college, was leading him away in handcuffs, he said to the banker, "I have just one question for you. Where

The father of five children had won a toy at a raffle. He called his kids together to ask which one should have the present. "Who is the most obedient?" he asked. "Who never talks back to mother? Who does everything she says?" Five small voices answered in unison. "Okay, dad, you get the toy."

Two men went bear hunting. While one stayed in the cabin, the other went out looking for a bear. He soon found a huge bear, shot at it but only wounded it. The enraged bear charged toward him, he dropped his rifle and started running for the cabin as fast as he could. He ran pretty fast but the bear was just a little faster and gained on him with every step. Just as he reached the open cabin door, he tripped and fell flat. Too close behind to stop, the bear tripped over him and went rolling into the cabin. The man jumped up, closed the cabin door and yelled to his friend inside, "You skin this one while I go and get another one!"

Two women came before wise King Solomon, dragging between them a young man. "This young man agreed to marry my daughter," said one. "No! He agreed to marry MY daughter," said the other. And so they began arguing until the King called for silence. "Bring me my biggest sword," said Solomon, "and I shall hew the young man in half. Each of you shall receive a half." "Sounds good to me," said the first lady. But the other woman said, "Oh Sire, do not spill innocent blood. Let the other woman's daughter marry him." The wise king did not hesitate a moment. "The man must marry the first woman's daughter," he proclaimed. "But she was willing to cut him in two!" exclaimed the king's court. "Indeed," said wise King Solomon. "That shows she is the TRUE mother-inlaw."

For All Those Born In 70's & 80's We are the last generation that learnt to play in the street. We are the first who've played video games, saw cartoons in colour and went to amusement parks. We learned how to program the VCR before anyone else, play with the Atari, Super Nintendo and believed that the Internet would be a free world all on a 56kbit modem. We

traveled in cars without seat belts or air-bags and lived without cell phones. We rode our bicycles down the road without brakes. We never had phones but still kept in touch. parish. Having won a County senior football medal in 1972, he followed that by winning junior and intermediate hurling medals with his club, He served on the club committee for over thirty years and became Club secretary in 1997. His time and his work as club secretary will never be forgotten. His strong work ethic, his attention to detail, his fundraising activities, his match reports, his lining of the sportsfield and his voluntary service in maintaining it, his allocation of match tickets and his club notes will stand him out as a GAA club volunteer extraordinaire. He managed to combine all this with being a member of the Tipp Year book committee and United Sports Panel Awards committee, Chairman of Killurney Sports and Social Club and Quizmaster for so many entertaining quiz nights around the area. He attended matches all over Ireland, stewarded in Semple Stadium, saw Tipperary play in the Skydome in Toronto and was at the early Compromise Rules games in Australia. County Chairman Sean Nugent, a close neighbour and great friend, said at his funeral Mass that James Holohan’s deep faith and Christian values shone out in his work or sporting activity as it did in his contribution to community life. It is somewhat disappointing to find that the 50 mile section through North Tipperary is now something of a road block, having fallen far behind the other counties in the development of this project. At one stage recently, it appeared that North Tipp.was going to lose out altogether, with the route being diverted via the East Clare Way. However, the small group which has been striving for several years to avoid the calamity of such a valuable attraction for the local economy being lost have now secured the assistance of the Tipperary Leader Group and five sections with their own committee have been set up or are in the process of so doing. They are: Lorrha/ Ballingarry, Cloughjordan, Toomevara, Latteragh/ Templederry and Upperchurch. Of those, Lorrha and Latteragh/Templederry have recently shown great progress, while Upperchurch was already well established. Toomevara and Cloughjordan have some ground to make up. The North Tipp. section will be known as the

Ormond Way. Lorrha Historical Society have taken to the task of getting their section up and running with great enthusiasm and have already raised most of the funds which each area has been asked to contribute. The village is of huge historic interest and should be one of the most important sections of the route. The crossing of the Shannon near Lorrha in hastily constructed makeshift boats was one of the great hardships faced by O’Sullivans remaining followers.

Reps. From various groups who met in Lorrha to promote the Beara-Breffni Way. James Heenan, David Broderick, Christy Madden, John Bradshaw (Tipperary Clans). Matty Ryan (Ormond Way), Connie Ryan (Tipp.Rural Recreation), David Kyne (Leader), Sean Crowley (do), Joe O’Donoughue (do), Jim O’Sullivan (Nat. Co. Ordinator).

Some members Lorrha Hist. Society: Johnny Kelly, Denis Maher, |David Broderick Chairman and James Heenan Sec.

Book Review

Review by Elizabeth O’Shea

Vegetables for the Polytunnel and Greenhouse

His new volume, Vegetables for the Polytunnel and Greenhouse, is very welcome. Nature writer Michael Viney has said, ‘Of the many new books on growing your own food, this is the one I’ve been waiting for.’ In it, Klaus has chosen not to go into detail about selecting and erecting a polytunnel (for full details of this, you want The Polytunnel Book by west Cork-based Joyce and Ben Russell). Instead, he focuses on the detail of growing fresh food to the point of self-sufficiency. He also wants to encourage people to try out new plants we aren’t familiar with and ones that we use frequently but which really don’t grow outdoors in Irish conditions. So, in addition to the tunnel

standards such as aubergines and tomatoes, Klaus includes vegetables such as yacon and cape gooseberry. To ensure a good crop, he also goes into detail about propagation, tunnel soil fertility, pest management, and crop rotation. A number of colour photos will inspire anyone considering a tunnel or glasshouse to get growing. Vegetables for the Polytunnel and Greenhouse, like its predecessor, is a truly excellent reference for the serious vegetable grower. Vegetables for the Polytunnel and Greenhouse is 10% off at Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Cloughjordan, which is open Wed-Thu 10.30am5.30pm, Fri-Sat 10am-6pm and Sunday 1pm-6pm. By Klaus Laitenberger. You can count on one hand the number of vegetable gardening books that are written specifically for Irish growing conditions. Klaus Laitenberger’s Vegetables for the Irish Garden is probably the best regarded of these. Using the knowledge he gained as head gardener at The Organic Centre in Rossinver, Co. Leitrim and subsequently as the restoration gardener at Lissadell House, Laitenberger’s volume carefully considered Irish growing conditions and gave invaluable advice for Irish growers.

Prayers Novena to St. Martha St. Martha, I resort to thee and to thy petition and faith. I offer up to thee this light, which I shall burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. Comfort me in all my difficulties, through the great favour thou didst enjoy when Our Saviour lodged in thy house. I beseech thee to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (mention favour). Intercede for my family, that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask thee, St. Martha, to overcome the dragon which thou didst cast at thy feet. One Our Father, and three Hail Marys, and a lighted candle every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays and the above prayer made known with the intention of spreading devotion to St. Martha. This miraculous saint grants favours asked before the nine Tuesdays are ended, no matter howdifficult. Thanksgiving to St. Martha. A.M. The Miraculous Prayer – Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I’ve asked for many favours. This time I ask You this very special one (mention favour). Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Also, Thank St. Joseph, St. Martha and Our Lady. B.M. You are so powerful in obtaining every need of body and spirit from the heart of God. Holy Mother Church proclaims you, Prodigy of Miracles”The Greatest Saint of Modern Times” Now I fervently beseech you to answer my petition. Counselling Depression

(Continued from last issue)

There is a strong relationship between stress and depression, and it has been suggested that women’s lives are more stressful because, in some countries at least, they have less access to resources, have lower status jobs, and because of their dual role as worker and parent. Women may also be more affected by stressors than men, because they are more embedded in family and social networks than men. They may also have more negative life circumstances, e.g. caring for an ill relative, or being a single mother. Dave TuroShields, a therapist in Indiana, refers to a study of 2,921 single mothers, and shares his experience about them being at greater risk of depression because of increased number of life stresses, and a decreased amount of social support. Such mothers are often overwhelmed with their daily work, and feel trapped. Single fathers are also vulnerable to depression, but not as much single mothers, but more so than married fathers. There is also a connection between sexual abuse and depression, and research has shown that a significantly higher percentage of women have suffered this awful trauma, and are more affected by it in a depression context. Constance Hammen and Edward Watkins state that it has been shown that disadvantaged women find it harder to cope with ‘chronic adversities’ than men. They go further and argue that women’s ways of coping might actually intensify their sadness, because it has been proposed the when experiencing emotional distress women’s style is one of rumination, self-focus and overanalysing their issues. Many studies have shown that rumination promotes depression. Other research found that the rates of depression in women were only higher for problems concerning children, reproduction or housing, presumably because of their commitment and involvement in these areas. There were no differences between the genders in terms of marriage or work problems. Women do not experience higher rates of difficult life events, but may differ in the quality of experience associated with them, possibly due to their distinctive social circumstances. Interestingly, studies of brothers and sisters show that the brothers who suffered childhood hardship were more associated with externalising complaints such as substance abuse, while the sisters suffered from depression, which is seen as an internalising complaint. Popular attention is so concerned about facing men with responsibility for the results of their

By Jim O’Shea

destructive behaviour, that it does not see the emotional pain that drives these behaviours. Nonetheless, we must all take responsibility for our actions, even if we have suffered hardship and abuse. Much study, with mixed results, has been done on depression associated with menopausal changes. The latest research shows that rates of depression are higher among menopausal women, and that changing hormonal activity combined with stressful life events may account for this. There is also some evidence that the male menopause (andropause) is also associated with depression. Many changes can lead to depression, and men suffer depression from physical changes during the andropause. Flab can replace muscle, the skin gets dry, hair loss occurs not only in the scalp but also in the genital area and the armpits. The testes can get smaller. Jed Diamond is quite specific about the reality of the andropause, which has many of the symptoms of the menopause. These symptoms include a decline in hormones, erectile dysfunction, general tiredness, mood changes, memory loss, night sweats, and sometimes palpitations due to falling testosterone levels. It is understandable, for example, that depression can result from erectile dysfunction (failure to get or maintain an erection). This can be a vicious circle because some medications used for depression can contribute to erectile dysfunction.
