Jennifer's wedding day was fast approaching. Nothing could dampen her excitement - not even her parent's nasty divorce. Her mother had found the PERFECT dress to wear, and would be the bestdressed mother-of-the-bride ever! A week later, Jennifer was horrified to learn that her father's new, young wife had bought the exact same dress as her mother! Jennifer asked her father's new young wife to exchange it, but she refused. "Absolutely not! I look like a million bucks in this dress, and I'm wearing it," she replied. Jennifer told her mother who graciously said, ''Never mind sweetheart. I'll get another dress. After all, it's your special day.'' A few days later, they went shopping, and did find another gorgeous dress for her mother. When they stopped for lunch, Jennifer asked her mother, ''Aren't you going to return the other dress? You really don't have another occasion where you could wear it."

Her mother just smiled and replied, ''Of course I do, dear.....I'm wearing it to the rehearsal dinner the night BEFORE the wedding.''

There was an old priest who got sick of all the people in his parish who kept confessing to adultery. One Sunday, in the pulpit, he said, "If I hear one more person confess to adultery, I'll quit!" Well, everyone liked him, so they came up with a code word. Someone who had committed adultery would say they had "fallen". This seemed to satisfy the old priest and things went well, until the priest died at a ripe old age. About a week after the new priest arrived. He visited the mayor of the town and seemed very concerned. The priest said, "You have to do something about the sidewalks in town. When people come into the confessional, they keep talking about having fallen." The mayor started to laugh, realizing that no one had told the new priest about the code word. Before the mayor could explain, the priest shook an accusing finger at the

Bees, Hives, Honey! Beekeeping for Children

Declan McGrath CAR SALE & SERVICING Ballygraigue, Nenagh

By Tim Rowe Tim Rowe keeps bees in west Cork, where he has developed the rose hive method, emphasising colony health and increase. Tim also teaches beekeeping to adults and children, and his new book, Bees, Hives, Honey! Beekeeping for Children, is a truly wonderful record of how to get started with beekeeping. In fact, the book is a fullcolour, generously illustrated, handson start-to-finish guide that will be as useful to adults just starting as it is to children.

dents accompanied by 5 teachers will travel to Zambia for a 2 week Immersion working in the 10 schools. Three of the teachers involved hail from Tipperary; Principal Tom Clarke from Clonmore, Pat Downey from Boherlahan/Dualla and Paul O’Donoghue from Cashel. The funds raised will be invested in providing Water, Sanitation and Hygiene hence the acronym ‘WaSH’. Zambia is one of Africa’s poorest nations and basic facilities are often non-existant. Toilet facilities in the 10 schools are extremely basic and in many cases are just open’ pit latrines’. Former Principal of both Kilkenny C.B.S and Thurles C.B.S. and avid hurling supporter , Bro. Michael O’Donoghue is the driving force behind this project which strives to provide adequate water, sanitation and hygiene amenities in these centres of education catering for over 10,000 students. The Zambia Immersion Committee would like to thank both Under 21 Managers, Richie Mulrooney and Ken Hogan for their unstinting support in agreeing to this fixture and also to St. Patrick’s Ballyragget for providing their pitch on the night. Admission to the game is 5 euro and all proceeds go towards the financing of this worthwhile project. Why not come along and enjoy what should be an interesting and informative game of hurling between two age-old rivals whilst making a contribution to the lives of thousands of young Zambians who are infinitely worse off than we are despite the recession we find ourselves in? Your support would be greatly appreciated.

On Saturday last at Bruff, Doon CBS won the Corn an Runaí Munster Football title defeating Patrician Academy Mallow on a scoreline of 3-8 to 1-12. Doon’s path to the final included wins over Hospital Secondary School, St Joseph’s Spanish Point (after a replay) Nenagh CBS and St Munchins College (AET). This was a first ever Munster football title for the school and caps a great year after essentially the same panel won the Munster B Hurling the previous weekend. They now play the Ulster champions in the All-Ireland Semi Final. There was significant Tipperary involvement. Cappawhite's Russell Quirke was the star performer scoring 3-1 in the final. Our latest project to bring a bit of excitement to the village is ….. we have a picture entered onto the O2 website, to try & get the Irish Rugby team down to record there next TV advert for O2. Obviously this means we need votes – you only have to follow the simple steps. This all came about from the group doing Operation Transformation which has turned out to be a huge

success in Aglish with the group losing a combined weight of 55 ½ stone. 10th Kelly Clan Gathering to Take place in Tipperary It might seem a long way to go, but Tipperary is the venue for the 10th Kelly Clan Gathering.

Australia’s “famous son”, Ned Kelly, and also taking in various places of interest in the locality.

The Gathering dates are 17-19 May 2013 and will take place at the Dundrum House Hotel which is situated amidst the beauty and splendour of Ireland’s Golden Vale in the heart of Co. Tipperary. It is 21 years since the last Kelly Clan Gathering was held in Tipperary which makes it a very special event, with guests expected not only from Ireland, but USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.

Mary Kelly, one of the organisers and a spokesperson for the Association, says that although the weekend will be action-packed, the atmosphere is relaxed. “It’s a real opportunity for people who have a genetic, historic and cultural link to meet and have a good time, in a great location, with the added benefit of learning about their ancestors as well as meeting their living relatives.”

During the weekend there will be a tour of Moyglass (Killenaule), Co Tipperary, which was the birth place of Red John Kelly, the father of

We answer some of the questions you might have about the Household Tax

Q:

How much is the household tax? €100

Who has to register/pay? Every homeowner in the state (1.8m) is being asked to register. Every homeowner is being asked to pay except some groups such as council tenants (including shared ownership), people living in named ghost estates, those entitled to mortgage interest supplement and owners of commercial property.

Q:

When is the deadline for registration? March 31 2012

Q:

Will this money be used to improve local services? No. Local authority budgets have been slashed to pay for the bailout and this tax will not even cover all these cuts.

Q:

Why does the government want you to register? It wants the information you give them when registering to build up a database. They would not be able to introduce property tax (2013) and water tax (2014) without this.

Q:

Isn't a a property tax progressive? There is nothing "progressive" about taxing the homes of ordinary people. The mansions of the super-wealthy should be taxed but this can be done instead via a wealth and assets tax.

Q:

Q:

How much would a property and water tax be? Probably more than €1000 a year.

Can I be charged extra if I don't pay? Yes. There is a 10% late charge for the first 6 months, a 20% late charge for the second six months and a 30% late charge after that. There is also an extra 1% charge for each month. That means a penalty of €42 in a year.

Q:

Q:

Can I be fined for nonregistration? Yes. But this is not an automatic fine. The local authority would have to take you to court and the court would have to find against you. You could receive a "Class C" fine of up to a maximum €2500.

Can a fine be deducted from my wages or social welfare? Not unless the government changes the law. And only then if the local authority takes you to court and the court finds against you.

Q:

Q:

Can this be stopped? Yes. If a huge number of people refuse to register, the government will be unable to bring everyone to court. This campaign will appeal to trade unionists to boycott all work aimed at penalising nonpayers. There will be an almighty political storm if the government start cases against ordinary workers protesting against an unjust tax used to fund an unjust bailout. The Campaign also intends to establish a legal defense fund from some of the €5 membership fees paid by those who join the campaign.

Has a government ever been beaten on an issue like this? Yes. Thatcher's poll tax was defeated in Britain. "People Power" beat water charges here in the 1990's.

Q:

Q:

What can I do to support the campaign? Don't register. Don't pay. Contact us. Take a window poster, car sticker, leaflets. Come to your local meeting. Get your friends, neighbours, workmates involved. Spread the word. Join the Campaign by paying the €5 membership fee to help fund Campaign materials and the legal defense fund.

So why not step into the enchanted world of Broadway’s modern classic! Based on the Academy-Award winning animated feature, the stage version of Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST includes all of the wonderful songs written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman along with new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice. You will be transported to the heart of provincial life in a lovely French town. When Maurice becomes lost in the woods on the way to the fair, he seeks shelter in an old castle, but the master of the castle is a horrible beast that takes him captive. Maurice’s daughter, Belle, must then give up her freedom to save his life. Belle’s taming of the unfortunate Beast and his ultimate transformation back into a handsome prince enthralled Broadway audiences for over 13 years. This ‘tale as old as time’ is filled with spectacular costumes. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is sure to bring our entire community together for family theatre at its best.

Counselling Depression

(Continued from last issue)

Some studies show that while women are far more likely to have first onsets of depression than men, both are equally likely to experience recurrence. Other studies have found that females are more liable to recurrence and males more likely to have persistent depression. Those who suffered persistent depression are more likely to also have a comorbid (co-existing) complaint. It seems, too, that men may have different stressors; for example research in the last few years show that 1 in 7 men who become unemployed will develop a depressive illness in the following 6 months. After relationship difficulties, unemployment is the thing most likely to push a man into serious depression, because work is often the main source of a man’s sense of worth and self-esteem. The negative effect of unemployment is likely to become stronger if the female partner becomes the bread-winner. Men, also, have far higher rates of comorbid alcohol abuse and dependence than women. Many report that they do not experience depression until they had become dependent on alcohol. They also face a higher risk of heart disease, and show a much higher rate of completed suicides. There is a relationship between suicide and heavy drinking, and, in the U.S. 7% of men with major depression commit suicide as against 1% of depressed women. Depressed men younger than 25 are 10 times more likely to commit suicide than depressed women in that age category. It is also significant that men are more likely than women to become depressed in the context of divorce or separation. I think that this stems from how men are treated by the courts in relation to access to their children. Some men become suicidal when they feel that they do not have sufficient access to their children. I imagine the impact would be the same for women if they were similarly treated. Men’s behaviours are seriously affected by depression. They tend to withdraw from relationships, avoid getting help, have an over-involvement with work, angry outbursts, irritability and aggressiveness, an inability to cry, changes in concentration, sleep and weight, and sometimes lose an interest in sexual activity. It has also been found that depressed men are more affected at work than depressed women, and are more affected in their social activities and in how they relate to people. They show less impairment in their levels of physical functioning and vitality than depressed women. But, elderly men are more at risk of dying

By Jim O’Shea

during a bout of depression than elderly women. The reason for this may be the lethal effect of depression and heart problems, which are more likely to occur in men. Further, men do not seem to be equipped to deal emotionally with hopelessness and helplessness. So while men turn more often to sports, hobbies or alcohol, depressed women are more likely to turn to friends, family, religion, laughter or crying as a response. Bearing in mind the gender difference in symptoms and responses outlined above, other explanations have been put forward to explain why more women suffer depression than men. The roles that society imposes on women may partly explain this. There is a significant relationship between depressive disorders and being a homemaker. Sometimes being a homemaker means not having an income of their own, and dependency sometimes breeds depression. Because females are more socialised to orient towards others, and to suppress expressions of aggression, they are more vulnerable to depression in a social context. Women’s depression is more likely than men’s to occur if they experience low levels of social support. Vincent Lorant, of the Catholic University of Louvain, and his colleagues carried out a 7 year longitudinal study in 2007, which shows that women are more vulnerable to depression than men when they experience a downward change in poverty and suffer financial strain.
