Ambitious and aspirational people wanted Providing the opportunity to take a seat around the governance table is helping leaders of the future gain the experience they need.
The associate and independent director programme was launched five years ago as part of ÄtihauWhanganui Incorporationâs succession planning, and has proved to be a positive experience for all concerned. âProviding mentorship and giving people exposure to the nuts and bolts of governance is hugely rewarding,â says Mavis Mullins, Chair of the Ätihau-Whanganui Inc Board, âand the organisation benefits too, from their skills and what is often a fresh perspective.â âPrevious associate and independent directors have contributed in very meaningful ways to the conversations we have around our various committee tables.â Ätihau-Whanganui Inc is currently reviewing applications and nominations received for an Associate Director to join the Committee of Management and an
Independent Director position on the Audit and Risk Committee. âWe know that there are people out there who are already doing and achieving great things and this is their opportunity to connect with us so we can help them continue their journey,â says Mavis. These positions are welcomed into the governance team and hold the same responsibility as other Board members when contributing to discussions. âEssentially, they donât have a vote but they do have a voice when it comes to making decisions about the future direction of the incorporation,â explains Mavis. âIt is an opportunity for people to build their confidence and learn about what good governance looks like.â Laurissa Cooney is an independent director who has completed a four year term on the Audit and Risk Committee.
âThe experience has been hugely beneficial for me and I feel that I have made a tangible contribution to the organisation,â she says. âItâs a really nice way of getting your feet under the table and provides a platform for future directorship opportunities.â Laurissa is a qualified chartered accountant and was instrumental in the development and implementation of internal policies and structures to manage risk across Ätihau-Whanganui Incorporationâs diversified businesses. âThe position was also an opportunity for me to give back to my iwi by using my skills and knowledge,â says Laurissa. âThe growth and diversification ÄtihauWhanganui Inc is experiencing means that there are a whole lot of opportunities to learn.â TOITĆȘ TE MANA
