Travel Nurse: Healthcare professionals working under a contractual agreement with a hospital or agency that sponsors their travel and accommodations in order to work for a certain period of time, often to fill in for staff shortages, health crises or annual patterns of sickness (i.e. the flu). Landlords / developers find housing for travel nurses to be reliable since they stay on average of 90+ days and are professionals with an assured income.

New York City’s public healthcare system is increasingly staffed by travelling doctors and nurses from abroad who come to the U.S. on short-term contracts that offer the opportunity to extend stays, bring families, and eventually apply for residency and citizenship. Vario Vitae grows in conjunction with its occupants. Since their jobs are so demanding, it is imperative to build a housing scheme that could provide a flexible layout in order to accommodate the changing needs of these healthcare workers. It offers the ability to respond to changing housing needs as individuals and families go through life. The travel nurses that reside here would be welcomed into a diverse community that supports their transition into life in New York City.

Faculty: Christopher Romano Fall 2019 In collaboration with Allison Faux, Diana Genoa, Andrew Griffin, and Matthew McClean Through the research of buoyant behaviors among certain mammals, the vessel Manatee was established as a small boat that capitalizes on the concept of air as a component for floating. Directly extracting from their physiologies, “lungs” (or air bags) are introduced within the ribs of the vessel as a correlation to the manatee’s primary function to achieve buoyancy.

The lone vessel in the water creates initial buoyancy as it is able to retain its own weight and float. Secondary buoyancy occurs once a passenger enters the craft.

Finally, a tertiary buoyancy is achieved when additional weight, such as cargo, is introduced, causing the air bags to push against the ribs and offer more surface area against the water. A top view of the final vessel at the regatta emphasizes this respiratory function.

Faculty: Christopher Romano Fall 2019 In collaboration with Hunter Perez A bouyant research building with a tectonic that relies on an interdependent system of air pressure applying a tensile/ compressive force on surrounding members, giving birth to a self-supporting, “breathing” architecture. By relating the design to organisms that successfully thrive through their physiological form, in addition to existing forms of ships that establish a mechanism for buoyancy and a maritime language to design, Pneuma formalizes the conception of air as an essential element to life with respect to architecture.

Faculty: Gregory Delaney + Dennis Maher Summer 2021 A transom and sidelight are elements that surround a threshold, commonly the front entrance. While the transom sits above and the sidelights on either side of the door, both maintain the goal of providing light and view, which is emphasized by the fact that they are inoperable glazing units. The abundance of openings and folds amassed together to form the reference model indicates these architectural elements’ goal of transparency.

The extraction of transoms and sidelights from Buffalo’s abundant Victorian Era houses allows this experimentation of 2D and 3D elements at the scale of the singular unit, the series collected, and at the building scale. The finalized gallery proposal seeks to re-interpret the sidelight and transom as experiential elements. By including distinct perspectives through which the model can be seen, one can understand the ability to perceive (and receive) information through a variety of openings. This abstraction of view allows us to value the transom and sidelight as more than an aperture, rather directs our attention to interact with such a dynamic world.

LAND BREEZE

Daily fluctuations of coastal breezes are caused by water’s high heat of vaporization. During the day, the land heats up faster than the body of water, making the air above it warmer and rise, pushing the colder air over the water below, creating a convection current from which sea breezes occur. The opposite is true at night creating a land breeze.

Tabby is a vernacular construction material often used for traditional lighthouses in Spanish colonies. It is a mixture of shells, lime, sand, and water. Advantages include using locally sourced materials, inexpensive, no need for skilled workers, more durable than wood, reusable, and versatile.

Spiral Mass offers a temporary habitable thermal mass at Montauk Point State Park, New York by taking advantage of the existing natural elements that occur on the coast. With tabby as the primary material, the spiral nature of the structure is able to support itself, while offering a comfortable thermally regulated space for occupants.

Green roof for additional insulation and filters rainwater. Greenhouse directly exposed to sun (and heat) due to lower winter angles. Low-E double pane glazing traps heat in greenhouse (double skin system).

An off-grid housing type takes advantage of the existing resources found on the Montauk Point State Park site. The house utilizes the coastal breezes to passively heat and cool with the use of concrete as the primary construction material. The introduction of a “structural thermal mass” along the southern facade acts as a modified trombe wall, effectively contributing to the passive strategies that allow for thermal comfort within the house. This area creates space for an atrium, providing additional protection by functioning as a second skin by blocking harsh summer light/heat while encouraging cross ventilation and uplift.

With a very simple program organization, the single family unit is able to maintain comfortable environments throughout the year without using much external energy. By itself, the house can collect potable water through a catchment system that is directed from the green roof, produce solar energy, and regulate its radiant wall system through geothermal energy.

Re-interpretation of Coles’ 9-square Logo into a Skewed Grid

In this restrained disciplinary context, the physical structure and aesthetic of Utica Street Station in Buffalo, New York remains faithfully “modernist” in its minimalist geometries, and yet it contains an African sensibility in the complex spatial programming of its interior, particularly in the waffle grid structure of the foyer. Its architect, Robert Traynham Coles, an MIT trained modernist, draws upon the practical strategies and techniques of canonical modernism to express his personal commitment of cultural pluralism.

Presently, there is an opportunity to radically infiltrate the purity of the former style of the waffle grid to asymmetrically activate the orthogonal geometries of Utica Station’s foyer. The visual contrast between the new canopy and the existing waffle grid expresses the synthetic harmonies that Coles intuited between European form and African space in his long architectural career.

The skewed grid structure becomes a reference to Coles’ architectural logo, through which novelty was encouraged, with new implemented lighting to take cultural reference to the specific bright colors of Ndebele huts. This skewed grid would follow the original in one axis, and break off in the other, allowing this fracturing of the grid to reveal its Afrocentric qualities.

The Black Rock Community is a diverse, young community with 69% of the population below the age of 35. This can be attributed to the presence of young mothers in the area with a high school education or less, prompting the need for childcare and job-finding resources within the community. A dichotomy is introduced: one building takes the program of heaviness to house the resilience hub, while the other directly relates to the existing daycare center adjacent to the northern edge of the site. The former represents adaptability in order to adequately serve the needs of the community and be a source of refuge in the event of an emergency. The bike workshop, in turn, provides educational opportunities to enhance the Black Rock neighborhood’s socio-economic and demographic challenges, thus including a lighter building that openly invites the community.

Emergency Operations With Buffalo’s notorious “Lake Effect” wind storms during the winter seasons, the possibility of emergencies are prevalent annually. On the other end, heat waves are just as prominent as noreasters.

With these, the building’s integrated designs require less dependency for heavy mechanical services. These decisions offer an adaptability for a variety of situations.
