Gearing up for Summer and Fall 2023 Pre-Registration

In preparing for the Fall 2023 course registration, which opens on April 5, students are encouraged to do the following:

1 Attend their Individualized Development Plan (IDP) II meeting with their academic advisor During IDP 2, advisors will review midterm grades and plan for the upcoming semester with students.

2. Attend a pre-registration workshop hosted by the Office of Student Success. Workshop dates and times will be sent to students via email, sms text message, and posted to OSS social media outlets.

3. Review their degree audit to see which degree requirements are outstanding. Degree audits can be retrieved from Degreeworks (accessible via my desu edu) or by seeking assistance from their assigned academic advisor

4. Fill out their Course Request Form (CRF). Be sure that the CRF has 15 credits of degree applicable courses and is free from any errors, such as time conflicts or missing prerequisites.

Following through on these pre-registration tasks will make for a smooth registration process. Students are encouraged to see their advisor with any questions.

Stay Hornet Strong in Spring 2023

As the semester nears its halfway point, OSS wanted to share the tips below for students to stay strong and focus on the remaining weeks of the spring 2023 semester.

Review Degree Progress 1.

Students should view their degree audit to determine degree progress and course completions. Keeping track of degree progress is a key component of a timely graduation. Students should also check their Banner accounts for any potential account holds that could prevent registration.

2. Pre-Registration

Students should plan ahead for registration by attending a pre-registration workshop held by the OSS team and completing their Course Request Forms (CRFs).

3. Advising Meeting - IDP 2

Students are required to meet with their academic advisors twice per semester. These meetings, referred to as Individualized Development Plan meetings, or IDPs, are intentional points of connection between the advisor and advisee. These meetings serve as check-ins, rapport-building, and planning meetings, so that advisors and students can co-create plans for academic success.

4. Attend Mobile Advising

Once students have completed IDP 2 and their CRFs, they should attend mobile advising events or meet with their advisors to complete the registration process.

SPRING 2023 VOLUME 2: ISSUE 1 2

Mobile Advisement

Mobile Advisement is an event that occurs each fall and spring semester. Advisors and other cross-functional student services team members convene in heavily-populated student spaces to bring advising and registration support directly to them.

Spring Mobile Advising Dates and Times

April

April

April

April

April

Students should prepare in advance for Mobile Advisement by attending a pre-registration workshop offered by OSS and meeting with their academic advisor for IDP 2 (Individual Development Plan). During pre-registration, advisees will learn how to fill out a Course Request Form (CRF) utilizing their DegreeWorks academic plan. During IDP 2, advisors will review the CRF and sign off on it.

The CRF is a vital piece of information that students will need to bring to Mobile Advisement to complete their registration process. This form allows students to request specific courses. During Mobile Advisement, advisors will review the CRF. If not previously signed, then the advisor will review the CRF for accuracy and make any needed updates prior to registering the student.

Tip: Students should review Banner to make sure their account is hold-free prior to Mobile Advisement

Last year, the Office of Student Success (OSS) team launched a new tool, EAB Navigate Navigate streamlines the case notes, referral, and resource processes for the OSS team while providing students with a platform to schedule tutoring, advising, and other related services

Navigate will allow faculty and staff to act collaboratively as a care team for students,

monitoring their academic progress, professional needs, and personal concerns.

Navigate also includes an app feature, which keeps students connected to OSS resources on the go The Navigate app can be accessed on your various app stores, the Apple store or Google Play store, or directly in the DSU HUB app.

ele - Senior, Mass Communications ty, Maryland

My name is Janaan-Arie Akinmurele, and I am a Senior majoring in Mass Communications with a concentration in Public Relations and Advertising from Prince George’s County, Maryland. Being an out-ofstate student, transitioning to Delaware State required me to get out of my comfort zone and I was told that it wouldn’t be easy to do but I beg to differ My first real experience of HBCU life was during the New Student Orientation Even though it was one night spent on campus, I was able to connect with people that I texted over the summer and met up with as soon as I got to campus.

When I arrived here, I was shy and nervous about putting myself out there beyond the people I knew because I was in a new environment

My first taste of a student-led organization was the African Student Association “Oyato” Dance Team in which I became a member during the first semester of my freshman year. This experience of being around other people with the same purpose sparked my interest in joining other organizations such as the Fairy Godsisters of Delaware, Women’s Senate, Gracefully Igniting Voices Everywhere (G I V E), and the National Council of Negro Women My journey to student leadership happened when I ran for Miss Junior in 2021 and did not receive the position but I was appointed to Vice President of the Women’s Senate The trials I overcame with being comfortable with myself led me to be the Senior Class Vice President, G I V E Senator, and Miss NCNW for this academic year while being a general member of the organizations listed.

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Process

As we gear up for the summer and fall 2023 registration cycle, it is important that students are aware of their academic progress as it pertains to remaining eligible for federal student financial aid. We hope the following information provides further insight regarding Satisfactory Academic Progress.

What is SAP?

SAP stands for Satisfactory Academic Progress All students who receive financial aid are required to meet certain criteria (pace of completion, max timeframe, GPA, etc ) to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress In order to enforce SAP, a student’s record must be compared to the SAP criteria set by federal regulations (Sections 668.16(e), 668.32(f), and 668.34). SAP is reviewed after each semester (fall, spring, and summer).

What are the SAP criteria

SAP has three major criteria: GPA, academic progression (sometimes referred to as pace of completion), and maximum timeframe

For GPA criteria, undergraduate students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher.

For academic progression, students must complete 66.67% of all attempted credit hours in which they are enrolled beyond the last day of add/drop

To determine the pace of completion, the following formula is used: credit hours completed divided by credit hours attempted.

Example(s):

15 completed credits / 24 attempted credits = .625 x 100 = 62.5% (SAP not met)

15 / 24 = 0 625 | · 625 x 100 = 62 5%

30 completed credits/ 36 attempted credits = 833 x 100 = 83 3 % (SAP met)

30 / 36 = 0 833 | 0 833 x 100 = 83 3%

For the maximum timeframe, undergraduates must complete their degree in 150% of the timeframe outlined in the academic catalog. To calculate the maximum timeframe, take the average number of credit hours required to complete a degree and multiply it by the required percentage.

Example: 120 credits x 150% = 180 (maximum credit hours attempted for SAP)

What circumstances apply to the SAP appeal?

Students have the right to initiate a SAP appeal for extenuating circumstances that contributed to their situation, such as a family crisis, death of family, or serious illness. Documentation must be provided by 3rd parties regarding the extenuating circumstances.

The following reasons aren’t considered grounds for appeal: level of course difficulty, teaching method or dislike of an instructor, and time since the student last attended DSU An SAP appeal letter must be published prior to the deadline. It must explain in detail the circumstances that ground the appeal and how the student will be successful in their academic career going forward.

Note: Students may only submit an appeal two (2) times within their academic program timeframe. All appeals after will be automatically denied, except for special extenuating circumstances. All appeal decisions are final.

Campus Safety & Security at DSU

The safety and well-being of every individual in the Delaware State University community remains a top priority. As the warmer spring weather reactivates student engagement with more in-person experiences, the University continues to invest in resources to maintain campus safety and to educate students about ways to minimize risk We share the following information so that family members can become familiar with campus resources focused on safety and security An important initiative that began this semester to strengthen our current practices and policies regarding campus safety and security is the Safe Space Coalition.

The Safe Space Coalition membership includes students, faculty, alumni, administrators, staff, and parents. The Coalition is charged with assessing University safety protocols, campus policies, and response services that deal with sexual assaults, domestic violence, harassment, bullying, mental illness, and health-related matters It will submit recommendations to the President, monitor implementation, and regularly report to the broader University community

In executing the charge of the coalition, strategic committees were formed to work in parallel with and report to the Safe Space Coalition.

What Office Do I Call? Hornet Student GPS

A Communication Guide for Navigating the DSU Experience

On April 14, 2022, the Office of the President debuted the “2022 Hornet Student GPS” guide. Along with the guide is a message about providing a solution to the difficulties when it comes to navigating our offices here at DSU.

The message read - The “2022 Hornet Student GPS” is our initial attempt to help you better navigate your University experience Inside these pages, you will find contact names, emails, and phone numbers, but you will most importantly find in red processes and protocols for seeking assistance, addressing student issues, and escalating concerns. We will adapt this guide based on your feedback, but we are trying to make our commitment clear; we want a more seamless experience for our entire University, particularly for you, our students

We wanted to extend this guide to the peripherals of our beloved parents and families, as we know these contacts are essential to communicate specifically with our office and other offices that we work closely with

DSU Launches a One-Stop Shop App: DSU HUB

DSU is always striving to make innovations to support student success, campus services, and connection to the greater community The University this academic year launched its very own app, called DSU HUB The app, which can be downloaded for free from the App Store or Google Play Store, features a campus GPS, a centralized place for campus resources, communication capabilities, and allows students to be aware of campus happenings For parents, it offers a tool that provides important information about the University and the resources available to your student

Frequently Asked Questions: Parent/Families

How can I find out information about my student's record?

Oftentimes our office receives calls from parents who want to know specific information about their student's academic or behavioral record (grades, class schedule, advisors, etc) University staff members are prohibited from providing any information about a student's record as regulated by the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act Students can sign a FERPA waiver granting permission to University officials to discuss these matters with parents, caregivers, or designated individuals Students must do so with the Office of Records & Registration, which is open Monday – Friday from 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM at 302 857 6375 or by email at Registrar@desu edu

I am worried about my student. Where can I get help?

Many parents often call the Dean of Students Office when they are concerned about their students. Our office can contact other staff members to put resources in place for a student who is struggling. To speak to someone about your concerns, please call the Office of Student Success at 302-857-7527 or email us at Thrive@desu.edu. Likewise, you can also contact Dr. Wanda Anderson, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, at 302.857.6470, or email WAnderson@desu.edu.
