Delgado Community College supports economic growth in metropolitan New Orleans by training the skilled workforce our industries depend on to deliver quality products and services. INSTITUTIONAL IMPACT Delgado Community College generates significant economic activity in the New Orleans area. Through the wages and salaries of its faculty and staff, purchases from local vendors, capital improvements and discretionary spending of its students and more, Delgado contributed approximately $511 million in economic activity across the New Orleans metropolitan area in 2010. As the primary source of funding, the State of Louisiana is spending wisely when it invests in Delgado, generating over $10 in economic activity for every $1 appropriated. The economic activity generated by Delgado continues to grow. The college has seen record enrollment in recent years. As Delgado expands, its impact deepens. Since 2008, Delgado has seen total enrollment rise by over 25%. The annual economic impact of Delgado has grown as well. As of 2010, Delgado now supports over 7,000 jobs across the New Orleans metropolitan area.

Delgado Community College prepares students for careers in high-demand industries with associate degree programs, certifications, awards for technical training, and on the job internships. While not all graduates go on to work in the field in which they train, this analysis assumed that recent Delgado graduates employed in the metro area work in occupations related to their field of study. Given the job vacancies in each field recorded by the Louisiana Workforce Commission in their most recent survey, it is unlikely that qualified candidates would be forced to find work outside of their field of study.

The Value of a Delgado Education Taken together, Delgado students from the past five graduating classes will earn an estimated $107 million more in 2010 than they would have without the skills and credentials they earned at Delgado. The job prospects and average wages for those with associate’s degrees and technical training are significantly greater than workers with only a high school education. This analysis incorporates the unemployment rate, average compensation by occupation, and the migration of some Delgado graduates to other metropolitan areas. It is estimated that these recent Delgado graduates fill approximately 9,000 jobs across the metropolitan area. Again, these graduates earn $107 million more than they would have in the jobs they would have likely taken without a Delgado education. As Delgado graduates spend these additional wages on goods and services in the region, they cycle through the local economy, generating an additional $93 million in indirect economic activity in 2010.
the Value of WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT and Short-Term Technical Training The Delgado Technical Division and Workforce Development and Education unit provide a variety of training options, ranging from basic business software training, to maritime safety and firefighting, to skilled trade training. Since 2005, the Delgado Technical Division and Workforce Development programs have together provided the equivalent of on-the-job training for over 60,000 trainees. Part of Delgado’s Workforce Development unit includes programs qualifying under the State of Louisiana Incumbent Worker Training, which subsidizes training for existing workers in order to advance their skills, save jobs, and make Louisiana firms more productive.
