Welcome to Delbarton! Dear Parents, As I note each year to our new families, the faculty and staff of Delbarton School are your partners in the education and formation of your son. There is no more powerful team than Delbarton and our parents working together for the good of our students. In anticipation of the 2022-2023 school year, we have prepared this Delbarton Primer to provide you with a comprehensive description of essential information and contacts, and the many ways that you can immerse yourself in the Delbarton community. Getting involved in the Mothers’ Guild, Fathers and Friends, the Delbarton Fund Current Parent Committee, or the Parents Council on Diversity & Inclusion is easy and is greatly rewarding. Volunteering benefits your son and you as a parent. You’ll meet other parents and get to know the School and our distinctive Benedictine culture intimately. Volunteering and giving are expressions of your interest in and commitment to your son’s life. I encourage you to share your expertise with us, whatever it may be. Shape your volunteering to fit your ability to pitch in…whatever time you can share will be well worth it! “All children are warmed by the fires built by others.” This Delbarton Primer also covers the basics of philanthropy at Delbarton. Our annual giving program, the Delbarton Fund, provides approximately $2400 in support for each Delbarton student. Investments in the enhancements of tomorrow through our capital or major gift program build Delbarton’s long-term reputation and continue to benefit your son as an adult. Thank you for your faith in Delbarton by entrusting your son to us. Together, we will give him a transformative education like none other. That’s the Delbarton Difference! Gratefully,

Fr. Michael Tidd, O.S.B. Headmaster

History

T

he Morristown area is rich in history. During the notorious winter of 1779 - 1780, the Continental Army made its winter quarters in Jockey Hollow, now part of the Morristown National Historical Park, adjacent to what is now the St. Mary’s Abbey/Delbarton campus. Washington’s Headquarters is nearby in Morristown and well worth a visit. In 1868, self-made investment banker Luther Kountze, born in Osnaburg, Ohio, married Annie Ward Parsons, a descendant of two patrician New York families, the Barclays and the Delanceys. In the 1880s, Kountze amassed the four thousand acres that ultimately included what are now the St. Mary’s Abbey and Delbarton School campus, Morristown National Historical Park and Lewis Morris County Park. In 1883, Kountze built a large stone mansion as a summer retreat and established a working farm. Luther and Annie Kountze had four children: Barclay Ward, William Delancey, Helen Livingston and Annie Ward. Borrowing a syllable from each of the first three children‘s’ names, the estate was named Del-bar-ton. Following Kountze’s death during the influenza pandemic of 1918, his heirs made several attempts to sell the Delbarton estate. In 1925, the monks of St. Mary’s Abbey in Newark purchased approximately four hundred acres of the original estate, including the mansion and farm, to use as facility to train theological students.

2

The education-oriented Benedictine community, which had conducted St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark since 1868, opened Delbarton School in 1939 as a boarding school for boys, with students in the seventh and eighth grades. Eight boys graduated from the eighth grade in spring 1940. Under the energetic leadership of Father Stephen Findlay, O.S.B., who succeeded Fr. Augustine as Headmaster in 1942, high school grades were added (one per year) until 1948, when the first high school commencement of twelve young men took place. The academic prestige of the School grew, and, most significantly, in 1978, the monastic community terminated the residential program. Since then, many campus buildings and facilities have been added, and the student body has grown to 650 students in grades 7 to 12. In 2009, the monks sold 188 acres of its property for use as parkland, receiving funds raised by The Trust for Public Land, and the St. Mary’s Abbey/ Delbarton campus now occupies 187 acres of land. Fr. Michael Tidd, OSB, is Delbarton’s twelfth headmaster.

Our Expectations Students Delbarton students are called to excellence. Here, your son will think with all his being, strive with all of his strength, serve with all of his heart, love with all his soul, and act with all his faith. We offer much to all who become part of this community, and we welcome young men who are willing to give much. Faculty and Staff As a Benedictine Catholic college preparatory school for boys, we hold ourselves to a higher standard. Our educators are inspired to live out a mission of forming young men who are motivated to reach their best intellectually, physically, spiritually and morally. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging At Delbarton School, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) are not trends or novelties: they form a foundational part of our identity as a Catholic and Benedictine community. We believe that here, we belong and work hard to make this piece of our

4

mission a reality for all through programs, curriculum and strategic planning that focus on community engagement and growth. Our faith and commitment to Catholic Social Teaching and Diversity and Equity call us to deep, meaningful, challenging, and transformative work that impacts all departments and school constituencies. Delbarton is enriched by the diversity of its community. We are called to learn from and engage with students and adults of diverse backgrounds to create more dynamic and authentic learning environments in and out of the classroom. Faculty, staff and students become empowered to grow, lead, and excel. No learning community is whole without the inclusion and amplification of multiple voices, and we are committed to fostering belonging through this work. We are on an intentional, evolutionary journey, and our commitment to DEIB requires consistent review and a focus on growth and development.

Delbarton Transportation Information Car Drop-off / Pick-up Policies & Procedures Delbarton draws students from 12 counties and 120 towns throughout New Jersey, which makes transportation an important topic for our families. We offer a variety of options to make getting to and from our campus as convenient as possible. Please note that student drop off/pick up by car must take place in designated areas to ensure the safety of our students. The Science Pavilion bus loop is used for student drop-off and pick-up. Do not use the bus loop between 3:30 pm and 4:15 pm due to afternoon bus departures. The front of Trinity Hall is used only under special circumstances. We offer supervision in the Student Commons each school day from 7:00 am to 8:00 am, and 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. It is important for parents who drop their son(s) off at school before 7:00 am and/or who pick up their son after 6:00 pm to understand that he may be unsupervised while on campus. Municipal Busing Many of our students are bused by the public school district (morning and 4:00 pm) in which they reside. Most of the local school boards provide either transportation or its monetary equivalent to private school students who reside between 2 and 20 miles from the school they attend. In rural counties the farthest distance is 30 miles. The policy for transportation/reimbursement varies according to each town’s practices. Related information can be obtained by calling your Municipal Board of Education.

Franklin Lakes/Kinnelon/Mt. Lakes Summit Train Station Morristown Train Station Monmouth County Newark Hudson County Pick-up locations: Due to the wide geographical spread of each bus route, there are a limited number of stops for pick-up and drop-off. Parents are responsible for bringing their son(s) to and from these points. Bus stop locations change each year based upon the demographics of the student body. Late Bus Program Delbarton offers a late bus service for any student needing transportation for activities and athletics that conclude after the 4:00 pm buses depart. There are four late buses traveling in four basic directions: • North to Morristown / Boonton / Riverdale / Franklin Lakes / Ridgewood • South to Bernardsville / Far Hills /Somerville Circle • East to Madison / Chatham / Summit / Short Hills / Livingston / Florham Park • West to Mendham / Chester / Flanders All late buses depart Delbarton at Trinity Hall promptly at 6:00 pm. How to Support Delbarton In addition to sharing your time and talents with Delbarton, we invite you to consider supporting the School financially as well. Here are several ways to invest in Delbarton: The Delbarton Fund The Delbarton Fund is an essential, strategic resource that funds both anticipated budget items and unanticipated opportunities. Together, tuition and the Delbarton Fund are the foundation for everything that makes Delbarton unique. Gifts to the Delbarton Fund may be directed to: Greatest Need, for unrestricted support of the School's top priorities; Give a Boy a Year, supporting an annual financial aid budget of more than $3.25 million; Faculty and Staff Development, to help provide competitive salaries, benefits, and professional development; or Arts, Athletics, and Student Activities, supporting additional budgetary needs of sports, arts, clubs and activities. Each year, more than 85% of current parents participate by making a gift to the Delbarton Fund. For more information, please contact Maria Van Kirk P ’26, Director of Advancement Operations and the Delbarton Fund, at mvankirk@delbarton.org. Capital Giving Ongoing major updates to our campus facilities would not be possible if not for the generosity of our community making multi-year sacrificial commitments towards Delbarton School and St. Mary’s Abbey. For more information, please contact John O’Brien, Senior Major Gifts Officer, at jobrien@delbarton.org.

Endowment Giving A healthy endowment provides the School with longterm fiscal security and takes the pressure off the operating budget. Endowment principal remains intact as the school spends a limited percentage of the interest income, usually 4% of the endowment’s value annually. Gifts in Kind Delbarton welcomes donations of needed goods and services rather than cash. Donations of printing and professional services, construction and landscaping materials are examples of gifts in kind that directly enhance the quality of the Delbarton Experience for all students. Planned Giving Some ways to include Delbarton in your estate planning include making a gift to Delbarton in your will or living trust; Giving the proceeds of life insurance or retirement plans; Arranging a gift that provides income to you and/or a loved one. Many of these options not only benefit Delbarton School but can also provide benefit you and your heirs through tax savings and other means. For more information on the various ways to support Delbarton financially, please go to delbarton.org/giving.
