LEARNING FROM ANIMALS THERE ARE MANY LESSONS WE CAN LEARN FROM ANIMALS ABOUT COMPASSION, LOYALTY, AND LIFE. They are carefree, non-judgmental creatures that carry all of the positive attributes we should strive toward. Pets find beauty and happiness in the simplest parts of life. Their loyalty is like no other, as they are with us on our darkest days, and they do not care about our pasts. Our four-legged best friends are experts at living in the present and embracing the qualities we put forth today. They do not care about possessions, health, wealth, or fame. They care about what truly matters: kindness, happiness, and love. What I continue to learn from my pets is that life is full of beautiful, little surprises and joys. The way my dog’s face lights up over the simplest of actions, such as going for a walk and enjoying nature, or hearing me talk to him, reminds me that happiness is spending time with the ones we love. He also taught me that it’s ok to be yourself - even if it’s hard to find people who understand you, there is always a pet out there who will love you. If only we could all be as accepting of others as our loveable furry companions. There is hardly a better example of how pets teach us, accept us, and cherish us for who we are than our main feature on New Leash on Life USA, a prison dog training program in the Philadelphia area. Seeing inmate handlers with their dogs in training shows happy dogs who are willing to give people a chance, no matter their history. They teach their handlers that they have a purpose and that they are important. In our secondary feature on Day By Day Pet Caregiver Support, we learn that pets can show us our life’s purpose and that, because they are so essential to our daily lives, losing them is one of the hardest challenges we’ll ever face. It’s also a reminder to embrace every moment our pets are here guiding us through this journey of life. In our rescue feature on Luv-N-Bunns, we learn that even the smallest of companions teach us how to be responsible, caring, and patient. Pay attention to your pet and what they have to teach you. Perhaps your companion will show you how to accept others despite their differences, or how to be adventurous by setting down your phone and trying out new parks or pet-friendly businesses with them. Or, maybe they will teach you about new events or activities you can do with them this spring. Please reach out to us and tell us how your pets have shaped and changed the way you think and act in positive ways. Pets are our best friends, and they are great role models.

M Philadelphia and Pittsburgh unanimously passed ordinances prohibiting the sale of dogs and cats in pet shops, unless obtained from a shelter or rescue.
Cats love anything that moves, and water is very good at moving. Your cat might enjoy batting at running water, or drinking from the faucet because it’s shiny, reflective and it moves quickly.
Victoria’s Law will drive the pet market in PA toward more humane sources by prohibiting the sale of commercially-raised dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores, and increase transparency by requiring sellers to include identifying information in advertisements. source: humane-pa.org
WHITE VINEGAR IS GOOD FOR CLEANING White vinegar is highly alkaline and can deodorize areas marked with dogs urine. Urine stains are difficult to remove because they contain organic enzymes that aren’t removed using traditional cleaning methods. Vinegar breaks down the enzymes to clean the area and remove the odors from your home. To treat the soiled area, mix 1- part white vinegar to 6 parts water in a spray bottle, then spray to thoroughly saturate the stain. Use a toothbrush or carpet brush to rub into the stain and leave the solution on for five to 10 minutes. Then completely remove the vinegar with an absorbent towel and clean the stain again with a stain remover to remove any excess vinegar.

New Leash on Life USA Giving inmates and dogs the chance to rescue each other By Samantha St.Clair /// Photography by Dreamlite Photography
EVERYONE DESERVES THE CHANCE to rewrite their life story. In the Philadelphia area, New Leash on Life USA provides this opportunity to people and canines by teaching inmates the skills to succeed in the community upon parole, and training at-risk shelter dogs how to be exemplary companions. New Leash has worked with 320 men and women, 172 dogs and an additional 20 dogs that were too sick to enter prison since its start in 2011. Inmates teach dogs basic obedience to help them find loving homes, while the dogs teach inmates about responsibility, compassion, and their purpose in life. Changing Lives Associate Vice President of Prison Programs for New Leash on Life USA, Rob Rosa, is no stranger to prison dog training programs. Before his advancement in his career, he followed a similar narrative to the people he helps today. “At age nine I started to experiment with drugs. This led to a struggle with addiction and getting caught up in criminal activities. At the age of 16, I was labeled a career criminal. By 18 I was sentenced to a state correctional facility, and a judge told me that I would never be rehabilitated,” Rob explained. No one had faith in Rob having a chance outside of those prison walls until a stray dog named Terp entered his life. The dog was a Labrador mix who had been adopted and returned to the shelter three times prior to being rescued by the organization at the prison. He was scheduled for euthanasia, and the only way to save him was to train him. “I related to him,” Rob said. “I understood where he was at in terms of needing direction in life.” After their time together, Rob was pleased to see Terp become a service animal. “I was so proud to know that I took part in giving a young lady the ability to experience independence through the dog I trained.” Rob found his calling in life. He enjoyed several careers in the animal industry including being a kennel attendant at Animal Care and Control Team of Philadelphia and the Shelter Manager at ACCT Philly before he got involved with developing New Leash. His story is not the only story of success thanks to canines entering the prison environment to live with, teach, and learn from their inmate trainers. Graduates of the New Leash program are far less likely to return

Twice weekly they meet with the New Leash certified dog trainer, and once weekly they receive a two-hour basic animal care class on subjects such as bathing, brushing teeth, and cutting nails. The routine includes life skill classes that help teach the participants about mastering emotions, building self-esteem, victim awareness, and building confidence in workplace settings. to prison, and many go on to have successful careers in animal-related or other fields. The dogs are rewarded with positive life changes, too, changing from homeless and misunderstood dogs to loving, behaved companions, all in 12 weeks. The Program Process Every class starts by selecting participants who will be eligible for parole following the 3-month dog training program. Chosen participants go through an orientation on what to expect when participating with New Leash. The program begins with a week of preparation, followed by choosing dogs in the second week.
Throughout the 12-week program, the human-animal bond becomes apparent. People labeled as criminals become seen as animal lovers and dog trainers as they lay on the floor with their furry companions, laugh at the animals’ silly personalities, and learn and grow from every step of the training process. “Sometimes I look at the groups we are working with and think to myself: who is going to be the next me? It’s gratifying to watch them turn their lives around. I love being able to teach these individuals that there is something greater than being stuck behind a wall, or living with addiction, or living a life of crime. I look forward to having these people return to their community with the chance to do something positive.”
“I quote our CEO, Marian, when I say this: one of the toughest parts about the dog selection process is not being able to put a New Leash “rescued” tag on every dog in the shelter,” Rob said. “We have to focus on the ones we can save.” Dogs are chosen based on their potential to become excellent companions and their potentially bleak outlook if they are left in the shelter. “Dogs that need behavioral training, socializing, medical care, and obedience work, but will be safe in the prison environment, are our ideal candidates.”
After Release When graduation day comes, the dogs and people are ready to greet the rest of their lives from outside of prison walls. Canines head to their new homes where they will be pampered and loved for the rest of their lives, while the people have all of the tools they need to get a head start on a new life outside of crime.
Dogs and their inmate trainers are paired and live together 24/7 until graduation. The dogs are trained through positive reinforcement, and the end goal is to have the pups be able to pass their Canine Good
“Every graduate is given a 60-day internship with animal or non-animal related businesses,” Rob said. “A lot of these internships turn into full-time employment.” During their 60-day internship, parolees
receive stipends and transport to and from their workplace. Licensed social workers meet with them during a 90-day post-release transitional period to ensure they are adjusting and excelling in positive ways. “We also help them with job development by building their resume and searching for career opportunities,” Rob said. At the core of the organization is the fundamental principle that all people and animals are individuals who make mistakes and need guidance. “We believe that no human or animal should be forever judged by their worst moments,” Rob said. “I was one of those people once who was bringing destruction to my community. Now, I do what I can to have a positive influence on the community, which is what we teach our inmate handlers through our program.” While many New Leash graduates obtain careers involving animals, even those that do not are undoubtedly changed by what their canine partners taught them. “Dogs are amazing because they do not judge us,” Rob explained. “They do not see a criminal file. They do not see race, origin, or sex. They see another living being. We should learn from our animals. They look past the negatives and are always willing to give us a chance.”

about their dinner, which can add some difficulties to their care routine. They are also highly intelligent and can get themselves into trouble with their antics. However, most goat owners would agree the bad behaviors usually end in laughs for everyone.
Nubian Goats Friendly and productive farm companions AS A DAIRY animal and an enjoyable companion, the Nubian goat is an excellent choice for someone looking to fill their pastures. These goats produce rich milk that makes the most delectable of cheeses, while also maintaining a friendly and outgoing personality for those in search of a fun pet. The signature lop ears are what make Nubians stand out among other popular goat breeds. Nubians also have no color restrictions, which allows a herd of them to be vastly colorful. Coat varieties include blacks, browns, reds, creams, and
whites with patterns such as spots, stripes, and flecks with splashes of color on white. Their larger size is something to consider when deciding on a goat breed, as does can weigh over 150 pounds, while larger bucks can top over 200 pounds. If you’re in search of goats for milk production, Nubians are among the best with high butterfat content and nearly year-round production. However, while they are pleasant to have around, they can be more challenging to manage than some other farm animals. If you want rich cheeses, feeding them a specific diet and keeping them healthy and fit is a must. Despite the myth that goats will eat anything, this breed tends to be picky
As a pet, they are much easier to manage. Nubians have vibrant personalities, love neck scratches, will follow you around everywhere, and grow very attached to their owners. As herd animals, you need to have at least two goats for them to be happy, though three or more is preferred. If you supplement feed, they can do well in the smaller pasture spaces of the Delaware Valley, PA region. These goats will ideally live for 12-15 years, so they are a long-term commitment. After doing thorough research to determine if this breed fits what you’re looking for in a farm companion, you can enjoy all they have to offer - including those irresistible ears and loving personalities!

Day By Day Pet Caregiver Support Providing support before, during and after the loss of a beloved pet By Samantha St.Clair
All pet lovers know, the hardest part of loving a pet is saying goodbye. The time surrounding the loss of a pet is even more grueling when there is no one to turn to for help. Sometimes friends and family do not understand the grief journey when losing a pet, so instead of expressing grief to loved ones, it gets bottled up. Since 2012, Day By Day Pet Caregiver Support has been a free source of relief for those facing end of life decisions and heartbreak when caring for their elderly and ill pets. People don’t have to feel alone during the process, as all of Day By Day’s team members understand the sorrow that comes with saying goodbye to a beloved companion.
FOUNDING OF DAY BY DAY Day By Day founder Kathryn Jennings and her family went through hardships with their dogs before the decision to start the organization came to fruition. Their three Schnauzers, Pookie Poo, Hallie Boo, and Sallie Lou, were all lost within an eight-month period after battling several illnesses. “We had been managing Pookie’s extensive health problems for five years,” Kathryn explained. “She was a foster failure who made me the person I am today. Without her and my other two Schnauzers, Day By Day likely wouldn’t exist.” Kathryn had a difficult time finding assistance during her time caring for her ill companions. “I had to take my dogs to a lot of specialists, and I met many other people going through similar struggles. I got to the point where I decided I needed help. I needed someone to talk to, but there were no formal organizations that could normalize my grief or provide on-going support while I was caregiving or after loss. All the grief I was going through with my girls had to be for some reason.” The reason, it turned out, was to honor them through Day By Day, where pet parents would no longer have to feel alone when going through their grief journey. “The local vet community very much embraced the idea to open a 24/7 support organization,” Kathryn explained. “Grief can strike at any time, and everyone agreed there needed to be someone to contact, night or day, every day. I feel very honored and blessed every single day for what my girls gave to me in a time of great sadness: the knowledge to help others.” SEEKING HELP We can feel more grief when losing pets than we do people in our lives, which says a lot about the human and animal bond. However, despite this uniquely strong bond, it is still difficult for people to express their grief over the loss of their beloved companion. Hiding grief is common, but it shouldn’t be. “You build a relationship with your pet and share a life with them,” Kathryn said. “They are always happy to see you. They are with you night and day, through big life moments, and through times of great emotion. This bond becomes even stronger when you have to take care of an aging or ill pet with chronic health conditions. You build a daily routine around that pet. When you as a caregiver have to say goodbye, you’re saying goodbye to a living being you’ve spent an incredible amount of time with and a furry loved

one who has shaped your life. It is completely normal to feel and express immense emotions.” Day By Day steps up to provide a non-judgmental place for people to share their stories of life and love with their pets with others who understand the human-animal bond. The organization provides 24/7 support through a variety of service methods to suit most pet family’s needs. Whether you want someone to talk to over the phone, or prefer email or online chat services, Day By Day makes it easy to seek support in whichever manner makes you most comfortable. “Some people prefer working one-on-one with someone, while others prefer group discussions. Some people prefer not to speak to anyone at all and have found the many articles on our website of great service to them in times of need,” Kathryn said. It’s important to remember that grief often starts before even losing a pet. Anticipatory grief and the struggles of dealing with a chronically ill pet can be just as, if not more difficult to cope with during the end of life journey. spring Westminster Master Agility Grand Champion On February 9th, 2019 my Border Collie, Verb, was crowned the Westminster Master Agility Grand Champion beating out over 300 other dogs for the top honors. Verb is a five-year-old male Border Collie from Wyncote, Pa who has been training in the sport of dog agility his whole life. This was the 6th year Westminster has offered a dog agility competition and it was Verb’s second year competing. Dog agility is a well-loved and growing dog sport where dogs and their handlers are tested on their ability to navigate an obstacle course with jumps, tunnels, weave poles, and more. The course is never the same, and the dogs rely solely on the direction from their handlers. Verb is one of the top agility dogs in the country competing on a number of national teams. Volunteering What a perfect time of the year to donate your time to one of our local rescue organizations! Something as simple as a 20-minute walk would make the biggest difference for a shelter dog. Dogs at an open admission shelter may be there anywhere from one day to several months while waiting for their second chance home. Enjoy the beautiful weather, get some exercise and give this gift to one of our many homeless canine companions.
Spring is coming soon and now is a good time to prepare your horse for riding and training. Here are a few helpful tips: M Schedule a farrier visit, dental check and get any vaccinations needed up to date along with fecal counts for parasites. M Mend your pasture fences and prepare your tack for riding are other things to add to your Spring Checklist. M Body condition is also very important. You should periodically record the weight so you can monitor any excessive weight gains or losses. M Spring pasture grazing is important to monitor too as the Spring grass can contain more sugars and affect horses that are more susceptible to metabolic imbalances and diseases such as laminitis. M Body clipping is another important task on the to do list because the horse can become overheated during exercise. DVP: What was the inspiration behind opening Beech Hill Kennels? MET: My veterinarian requested that I open a boarding facility because they love how well cared for my animals are. We began nearly 50 years ago, and I still love working with the dogs every day. I love seeing to their needs, while also getting the benefit of playing with them.
DVP: What experience do you have with dogs?
MET: I used to show dogs and had the number one Great Dane two years in a row in 2010 and 2011. I also breed top quality German Shepherd Dogs. We have a recent litter of puppies from a German Shepherd we imported from Germany that will be phenomenal dogs.
DVP: What do your clients love about
DVP: Why should people choose your
your services? MET: They love the individual attention the dogs get. We also have a section for special needs dogs that are older and have special requirements. Our staff is qualified to administer medications such as insulin. People like the care their dogs get as well as how much time our team plays with them daily. We also are very accommodating and allow dogs with behavioral problems. There are very few dogs we won’t serve.

Each dog has their own indoor and outdoor run so they can choose to have fresh air whenever it is nice outside. We provide walking and individual play time for an additional fee. HILE SPRING AIR AND THE EASTER HOLIDAY may make adopting a bunny tempting, you must stop and consider if a rabbit is suitable for your lifestyle. Rabbits are the third most surrendered pet to animal shelters and rescue groups in the United States, primarily due to misconceptions about their care needs. A local rabbit rescue, Luv-N-Bunns, provides valuable information for future bunny owners while also saving abandoned and surrendered domestic rabbits. If you’re on the search for a new furry family member that binkies and takes over your home, contacting Luv-N-Bunns is a responsible first step toward learning more and finding that companion that will steal your heart.

LUV-N-BUNNS Luv-N-Bunns was founded in 2007 and has saved the lives of nearly 2,000 rabbits. Through foster homes, the organization has an average of 70-80 rabbits in its system at any time. From tiny Netherland dwarves to Flemish giants, Luv-N-Bunns rescues all breeds of domestic rabbit, no matter their health or personality upon arrival. “We rescue over 100 rabbits per year now,” Luv-N-Bunns’ President, Elizabeth Luczyszyn, explained. “Around half of them are owner surrenders and the other half are strays or come from shelters.” All rabbits are given veterinary care upon intake, and once given a clean bill of health from a veterinarian, are spayed and neutered before they are available for adoption. “When you adopt from us, you know the rabbit’s personality already,” Elizabeth explained. If you purchase a baby rabbit, you are getting an unknown when it comes to personality and you will also be responsible for spaying or neutering. When you adopt, your rabbit comes altered with a history of characteristics from their foster family. The most significant decision with adoption is whether or not you are ready for a little ball of fluff that is a much bigger responsibility than most anticipate.
Owning a Rabbit “Our rescue frequently gets rabbits who were gifts for Easter or other holidays,” Elizabeth stated. “People often don’t realize the responsibility and long-term commitment that comes with sharing their home with a rabbit.” Rabbits can live for ten years or more if you are fortunate, require daily exercise and socialization, and take up a lot of space in your home when housed appropriately. An exotic vet is also a must, which can be costly and difficult to find. “Rabbits are very fragile and don’t make the best pets for young children,” Elizabeth said. Young children are often the ones who receive rabbits as gifts, and generally don’t get what they want out of a pet. Bunnies are not always as cuddly as they look, and, as prey animals, they don’t like people holding them. They are much happier with adults and older kids who will respect their space, be gentle, and get on the ground with them to socialize. “Rabbits, of course, do make wonderful pets,” Elizabeth said, “as long as you’re willing to provide them the home and environment they need to thrive.” They are happy little companions who will light up your home with their funny antics. They love interacting with their people and will always make you laugh, even when they are naughty. “They are clean, smart, and affectionate pets,” Elizabeth said. “Once you know how to care for them, they are a joy to have around.” How You Can Help “We couldn’t do what we do without our amazing foster system,” Elizabeth explained. “Foster homes supply food, toys, and a lot of love for their foster bunny until they find a loving forever home.” Fostering is a great way to learn what it’s like to own a rabbit without the long-term commitment, and you get to save a life along the way. “If you can’t foster, we need volunteers all the time in all different capacities,” Elizabeth said. “We love having help at events such as our bunny yoga nights.” After research, if you genuinely believe a rabbit would fit into your family, seek out a rescue group that can help you find a bunny that best suits your life. PAMPERING BELOVED PETS IS exciting and rewarding for everyone involved, which is why doggy weddings, “gotcha day” celebrations, and birthday parties are a growing trend. While people may enjoy seeing happy dogs and socializing with fellow pet lovers, pets will have their eyes fixed on the prize of the party: the food. It may be tempting to go over the top and supply furry guests with burgers, ice cream, and cake, but these aren’t the best options if they aren’t made specifically for pets. Your pup will love safe alternatives and you will feel content knowing your pet won’t suffer ill consequences from eating food made for people when you plan dishes thoughtfully. “Substitute sugar with pet-safe peanut butter or honey, and avoid dairy,” Stephanie Johnson, owner of Pet Friendly Dog Bakery in Philadelphia explained. “If you’re planning to invite other furry guests, leave meat off the menu, too.” Dogs can have health issues that prevent them from tolerating certain meats, and there are plenty of alternatives that will make them just as happy. Use cake and ice cream made for dogs and avoid those

made for humans. No matter how pretty and tasty goodies made for humans are, it isn’t worth the risk to your pet’s health. It’s also important to be mindful of how much your dog is eating, especially when they are eating new foods. “Our bakery makes a wide variety of treats that dogs love that are low calorie, pet-friendly, and still delicious,” Stephanie said. Some ideas include using crumbled dog treats as sprinkles for doggy ice cream, making a peanut butter drizzle to go over canine cakes or cookies with a warmed xylitol-free peanut butter and coconut oil mixture, and using peanut butter flavored popcorn as a light snack. “We also offer dog beer and wine for sale, which is fun to add to parties.” Dog beer is made of chicken broth, beef broth, and added vitamins and minerals, while the wine consists of purified water, chamomile, beet juice, and vitamins. They are healthy, cute additions to any party that create adorable photo opportunities.
