From the Principal Dear Families, Our world is very messy at the present time. Each evening on the TV news we are almost certain to have three items: the starvation of millions in the horn of Africa and the consequent refugee stream into northern Kenya of mainly woman and young children, the people of Libya, Syria, Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan and their struggles for freedom from oppression, and, the asylum seekers debate. Australians are involved in the feeding of the drought-affected peoples of North Africa through AusAid. A Federal Government initiative, it is there to ensure that we play our part in helping to feed people and cure the sick. We cannot solve the problems caused by drought but we are doing our bit to assist people in need. Asylum seekers to Australia are receiving a lot of attention at great expense and no solutions are apparent. Should we re-settle children in another country? Should we move our processing systems off-shore? Should we grant all asylum seekers temporary refuge in Australia until processing of the request has been completed? Should we accept all asylum seekers when they arrive as they are such a small part of the world’s refugees? Is it human to lock people away in far off places for an extended period (sometimes more than 18 months) and until they can be ‘processed’? These are but a few of the questions for which the answers are not so readily forthcoming. As federal parties argue over position, policies and parliamentary point scoring, perhaps we need to keep the victims in our prayers. Asylum seekers are generally not opportunists. They have fled their own country out of fear, at whatever the expense, to find a place of freedom and happiness. Whilst processing is important, is it not reasonable to also assume that speedy processing is the humanitarian thing to do? Australia is the land which “abounds in nature’s gifts”. Most of the families in De La Salle are the sons and daughters of immigrants. Some are even the descendants of convicts. Some are the descendants of those devastated by the ravages of a European war. All are the descendants who chose Australia with hope and freedom in their hearts. Well, now we have the descendants of a middle eastern war – how should we respond? Let us pray that our parliament will find a humanitarian and Australian answer to this challenge very soon. We cannot determine the answer but we can pray for those whose responsibility it is to do so. May the principles of compassion and morality prevail.
Year 11 Students & Teachers to PNG This week thirteen of our Year 11 boys, two staff, a TAFE teacher (who also went with us in 2010), and a plumber and father of an ex student, have gone to De La Salle College, Bomana, on the outskirts of Port Moresby, to assist in the re-development of that school. Having raised $1,200.00 each, they have gone to Port Moresby with the aid of some MAD funds as well, to live in ordinary conditions and work hard to help the school re-develop some of its facilities. De La Salle is a very good high school in PNG and it is now trying to upgrade its facilities to improve the opportunities of all who study there. It is a challenge! We pray for the good health and safety of our De La team and that their contribution of time and funds will enable a very poor country to help develop its young people through better educational provisions.

Year 8 Class Learning Experience Camps Year 8 classes have also begun their Learning Experience camps this term. So far 4 classes have been to Geelong and surrounds to examine its history and development, a tropical rain forest and enjoy some time at Jan Juc. On their way back they spend a morning at “Big Issue” in the city where some of the homeless people have shared their story with the boys. They finish their 3 days at Sacred Heart Mission where they assist in the facility with after lunch work and preparations for the evening. The reports from the boys and teachers accompanying have been very positive indeed.
Year 7 and 8 Drama Congratulations to all the thespians from Years 7 & 8 classes who came together, under the direction of Mr. Andrew Murrell, Drama Coordinator, to produce two wonderful short plays for us last weekend. The experience for the boys was just wonderful. Mr. Murrell had an arduous journey with them as for most this was their first piece of drama. But hard work and persistence won through. Well done boys and our thanks to Mr. Murrell for all his dedicated hard work with the boys.
NAPLAN RESULTS Congratulations to all teachers and students on the outstanding NAPLAN results for De La Salle in 2011. A full report is presented elsewhere in this Newsprint. The College has improved significantly against all the markers.
End of Term Term Three has been very busy with lots of opportunities for the boys. I am grateful to all the teachers who contribute to so many activities during the Term and make it all possible. I am also grateful to the boys who are so keen to be involved. A sport report elsewhere will detail that success and our thanks to the Director of Sport who makes so much possible. We have had music programs, dramatic productions, public speaking and chess competitions. Whatever is done enhances the wide band of opportunities provided for the boys and also enhances their opportunities to develop themselves. The term is coming to a close and we look forward to some very serious study in Term 4. Our senior boys have finished all their sporting commitments and only the VCE or VCAL remains as the centre of attention. I urge all our seniors to use the holidays well. Organise your free time around your daily study commitments since your ATAR score will be your passport.
Term 4. The term commences on Monday 10 October. Summer uniform will be the order of the day. Make sure that the hair is neat and tidy on resumption of classes, you black leather shoes with laces are clean, and your summer uniform is shirt with badge. If you have no badge you are required to wear a tie. We wish all families a safe holiday and hope that you can get valuable family time during the two weeks. Brother Paul fsc Principal

Naplan Results 2011 During this week families should have received the results of their son’s NAPLAN testing which was undertaken in early May this year. Tests were undertaken in the five areas of Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar & Punctuation and Numeracy by students in Years 5, 7 and 9. The individual student’s results enable comparison with the student’s performance compared with the National Standard at that Year Level in each of the 5 areas of testing. The school has also received statistical information about the overall school performance at each Year Level compared with the Statewide performances in each of the test areas. We are pleased to be able to report strong performance.
YEAR 5, 2011 Valid statistical analysis is difficult due to the comparatively very small size of our Grade 5 cohort compared to the average Grade 5 enrolment in most schools. Nevertheless we are encouraged to know that our Grade 5 performances are at least equal to the statewide performances.
YEAR 7 2011 An examination of the graph below will show that mean performance of Year 7 was much higher than the statewide mean performance and that this difference was statistically significant in all five areas.
YEAR 9 2011 Again the graph following will show that mean performance of Year 9 was much higher than the statewide mean performance and that this difference was statistically significant in all five areas. This is most noticeable so in writing and numeracy.

IMPROVEMENT FROM YEARS 7-9 The graph below shows how the current Year 9s have improved from Years 7 – 9 compared to the statewide figure. For DLS use the red bars as this “matched cohort” represents the students who were here during both Year 7 and Year 9. DLS has shown higher growth than the state growth in all areas. (Reading cannot be validly compared as the writing genre changed in 2011).
Comparisons with National Data are not yet available but a positive performance against state data is always encouraging as Victoria always performs higher than the National performance. Stephen Young Assistant Principal Curriculum

Year 12 Unit 4 Trial Exams Trial exams will be held for the majority of Unit 4 subjects from the 4th October to 7th October this year. Students are expected to attend their scheduled exams as per the exam timetable attached. This is an opportunity for students to gain valuable exam practice as well as give them a real test as to where they are up to with their studies. All exams will be marked and feedback given to the students on their return for Term 4. Students must attend in school uniform and need to ensure they contact the school if they are unable to attend any of their exams.

Wellbeing News Thanks to those parents who attended the parent evening on 7th September. A special thanks to the three students who spoke so openly and clearly about significant intrapersonal and interpersonal learning that has happened for them this year. Well done! “Socialisation”, while obviously not a formal part of the curriculum, is nevertheless an important part of the educational experience at school. Helping boys to become increasingly “response-able” to self and others is a vital service to them and to the society of which they are members. Boys need constant reminders from teachers and parents to be socially aware. This means correcting them for all sorts of “seemingly small” infractions of anti-social behaviour: talking while eating; putting feet on seats in classrooms, at home and on public transport; talking loudly or over the top of others; texting while another is trying engage in face-to-face conversation; leaving rubbish behind for others to clean; coughing, sneezing and yawning without covering the mouth; swearing in public (even though no harm is intended); not contributing to household costs whilst having a part-time job; yelling in arguments; speaking maliciously of others; neglecting to use the words “please”, “thankyou” and “excuse me”; lying and exaggerating; taking or borrowing other people’s items without asking; giving into fear instead of standing up for what is known to be right; opening closed doors without knocking; … the list is huge! All these may seem rather unimportant – I would argue (in terms of wellbeing), that indeed they’re not – moreover, if you put a number of them together, you begin to unearth a description of a most unattractive personality – one which will repel decent friends and one which will eventually be at the bottom of the list of desired employees. Boys will respond to simple, consistent correction for behaviours, which they know are inappropriate and socially irresponsible … and of course, the younger they are and the sooner you start, the easier it will be. It is imperative that the adults in their lives take an active interest in promoting GENTLE-MANLY behaviour rather than in turning a blind eye to behaviour which labels them as socially unaware and ignorant. Mobile Phone Recycling Program Dear Parents, This year De La Salle has enrolled in a mobile phone recycling program. The phones we collect go to Melbourne Zoo and help to support their programs to save the Mountain Gorilla. The added bonus is for every old phone we collect the school gets $3 which this year will go to support the Coolies boys traveling to India to erect houses and school buildings for the disadvantaged. Please search through your draws and send your old phones to school, they can be handed in at the main office, to your son's homeroom teacher or myself. Thanks for your support

Chaplain’s Notes Congratulations: Daniel Venturoni, Joshua Webb, Michael Ermacora, Travis Shannon, Thomas Webb, Jai Rodrigo, Michael Giannattilio, Timothy Fierenzi who will receive the Eucharist for the first time this Sunday, 18th September. Also to Beau Holden who has prepared with his fellow students and received the Sacrament in his local parish. It is encouraging to witness the commitment of these young people who have chosen to strenthen their relationship with the person of Jesus Christ within the Church. The support of their families and their involvement in their son’s preparation is impressive. A family Mass and supper on Thursday night, for candidates and their families, was a joyful preparation for this big moment in the boys lives as they excitedely anticipate next Sunday. The Eucharist is for all of us the summit of our prayer and the source of grace, that compells us to be people who make a difference in the world. It is from Eucharist that we are “sent forth” to live out the message of Jesus in both word and action. Please continue to keep these young people and their families in your prayers. I also thank and commend all the families who have been involved in the Sacrament preparation program during 2011. It has been a privilege to take this journey with you and your sons. Primary News Grade 6 Military History Projects Grade 6 have just completed a term military project that looked at aspects of Australia's involvement in wars over the years. The projects included a written summary of a selected topic and a model to support the researched topic. The standard of these projects are excellent. Six projects will be selected to be on display at the East Malvern RSL leading up to Remembrance Day 2011, along with other military projects from seven local primary schools. Each school will have a winning project and a prize will be presented to each student at the Remembrance Day Ceremony on 11th November. Primary Auskick Clinic On Thursday, 15th September the Primary students attended an AFL football clinic run by the Year 11 Community Recreation classes, co-ordinated by Peter Larsen. Boys rotated through a range of football skills and had time at Menzies Reserve. Grade 5 Camp Grade 5 have gone to Gippsland this week for their annual camp. The camp combines adventure activities during the day combined with a range of night time group tasks. The camp is led by Tim Curran and Michael Wilson, Camp Coordinator.

Year 10 Dance Program 2012 A reminder to all Year 9 students and parents that you should have received by now the letter notifying you about the Year 10 Dance Program held in Term 1 each year. This letter was mailed to each Year 9 student informing them that applications are now being accepted for the popular Year 10 Dance Program that is conducted each year in the College Gymnasium. I know how students of Star of the Sea College look forward to this event each year and we can only accept 75 students from both De La Salle College and Star of the Sea College so you need to return your form and payment in the self-addressed envelope that was provided with the letter. If you have any questions regarding this Dance Program, please do not hesitate to contact me – Joy Bew (Coordinator of the Dance Program) on either 9775 6110 or 0422 396110 as soon as possible to reserve a place for your son. Please note that this Program is extremely popular with the boys and after I receive 75 applications I will need to create a waiting list.
Blue and Gold Ball 2012 Last week, I mailed to all this years’ Year 10 students and their parents a letter inviting students who would like to participate in next year’s Presentation Ball to please return the reply slip which indicates their “Intention to Participate” in the Ball. This year, we had a record 58 couples participating and I have already received numerous phone calls from young ladies who attend neighbouring schools wanting to participate in our Presentation Ball. Please do not worry if your son does not have a partner at this stage; all I need is an indication of the total number wishing to participate. Your son will have the Christmas holiday break to ask a young lady to partner him or he may like to partner one of the girls who have already indicated their desire to participate in the Ball and will be requiring a partner. With the letter there was a reply slip to return along with the $20 to secure his place in the Presentation Set. (This $20 deposit will be deducted from the price of his ticket to the Ball.) I also supplied a self-addressed envelope for your use when returning the form. PARENTS’ NETWORK Parents’ Network AGM To be held: 17th October, 2011 at 7.30pm - Peppercorn Tree Café – Kinnoull Campus Br. Paul to give Principal’s Report ( Light refreshments will be served) Those of you who have never attended a Parents Network meeting or AGM, this is an opportunity for you to come along and see for yourself how informal and friendly these meeting are. We look for assistance from any parent willing to dedicate a little time but this does not mean you have to have previous experience in anything in particular. We work together as a group and collectively get the job done. Most tasks are not onerous at all and even though some have a title, they seldom entail anything more than a couple of hours a month and always with support and direction from other members. Those of you contemplating putting your hand up for an executive role, the following are on offer:President:
Chairs the meeting and co-ordinates the committee. Liaises with staff and acts as our head of proceedings. Attends a couple of functions a year to represent the parent body at designated school functions. Allocates and oversees anything the committee decide to do such as raffles, fundraisers etc. This is all done with the assistance of all members so plenty of help is always on hand.
Vice President:
Serves to assist the President and step in in his/her absence.
Treasurer:
As the role suggests, this person looks after the banking and presents a small monetary movement report at each meeting – very simple role which requires no more than a couple of hours per month.
Publicity Officer:
Prepares the article for insertion into Newsprint each issue. Probably requires a maximum of one hours work every 3 weeks.
If you have any questions prior to the night, feel free to give either myself or my current Vice President, Marie a call to clear up any issue that might have you joins us and support the functions we undertake to ultimately assist our boys and the facilities available to the them. I genuinely hope to see lots of new attendees there on the night. Jan Juc Mothers Weekend. Carry On (Victoria) assists Secondary School students in Years 7 - 12 with grants for expenses such as fees, books, uniforms, excursions etc. For those students going on to Tertiary Education, a grant may also be available. Children whose Parent/s or Legal Guardian/s have a need for financial assistance and comply with our eligibility criteria may apply. All grants are income tested and the closing date for applications is 25th October, 2011. Notice from Victorian Police - Operation cross In an effort to improve pedestrian safety in the Malvern area, Police are commencing Operation CROSS which will run from September until December. 2011 ACC Cross Country Carnival The ACC Cross Country Carnival is now over for another year and we finished in 3rd place in the overall Division One standings. It was our team goal to ensure that we maintained this position from 2010 and all 60 team members who represented De La performed proudly and bravely. We finished 3rd in the Junior (Under 13 and 14), Intermediate (Under 15 and 16) and Senior Sections (Under 17 and Senior). That's consistent! Both our Under 14 (2nd in 2010) and Under 16 (4th in 2010) Age Groups were Division One Champions which is the first Carnival since 2007 that we have won any Age Group Championship. The following Team members were awarded ACC Medals for their great performances: Harry Lagastes (Year 8R) Winner of the Under 14 3km race in a time of 9.52 minutes. Harry has now won "Back to Back" ACC Gold Medals! Nathan Evans (Year 10B) Runner Up in the Under 16 5km race in a time of 16.37 minutes. Simon Hearn (Year 12H and 2011 Captain) Runner Up in the Senior 5km race in a time of 16.01 minutes. Thank you to the following Staff Members, not only for their support of the boys, but for all of their time, effort and enthusiasm right throughout our preparation for this Carnival which began back in Term Two: Tim Curran, Ken Stokes, Dave Alexander, Peter Larsen, Ray Leetham, Peter Crellin and Simon Brown. We look forward to acknowledging and applauding our 2011 ACC Cross Country Team/Squad at upcoming Tiverton and Kinnoull Assemblies. 2011 Victorian Interschool Snow Sports De La Salle College was again represented at this years Snow Sports Championships at Mt Buller, from 19th August to 23rd August with 18 students from Years 7 to 12 competing. The boys competed in both the Snowboard and Alpine Skiing Giant Slalom events. Each boy was entered into an event in which he completed two runs of the slalom course on Little Buller Spur. These two runs were timed and their final result was calculated as an average of the two runs. All the boys completed the course and are named below in their divisions. Alpine Giant Slalom
- Division 1 Boys - Elliot Tamplin, Phillip Stevens, Alex Chaplin - Division 2 Boys - Jack Reeve, Sebastian Otten, Pierluigi Grech - Division 3 Boys - Will Jones, Callum Brace, Remo Checcucci
Snowboard Giant Slalom - Division 1 Boys - Stuart Brennan-Smith, Joseph Maccora, Ryan Moody, Oliver Jones - Division 2 Boys - Harrison Tailby, Kieran Johnson, Jake Pirovano, Ben Tamplin, Brendan Simon
The competition has the largest number of competitors of any winter sports event in the world. It is fantastic that De La Salle is part of this inaugural event. All the boys who represent the College competed to the best of their ability and were very competitive. Particular mention must go to Harrison Tailby who came 18th out of 113 competitors and Jack Reeve who came 45th out of 152 competitors. I would like to congratulate the boys on their performance and encourage them to return next season to compete. For the College to compete in this event, a great deal of preparation and planning is necessary. I would like to thank the College for putting their full support behind the Ski Team and a special thanks go to staff members: Mr Shane Slavin, Mr Peter Harte and Mr Simon Brown for their time and effort. Victorian Weightlifting Championships The Victorian Weightlifting Championships were held on Saturday, 3rd September and the results for our three DLS Weightlifters were as follows:Frank McCormak (Year 7) Gold in Under 15, 42kg Division Luke Torrisi (Year 9) Gold - Under 15, 69kg Division Gold - Youth, 69kg Division Silver - Junior 69kg Division Jake Lever (Year 10) Silver - Youth, 77kg Division Luke Torrisi was also awarded ‘Best Under 15 Male’ at the 2011 Victorian Championships. Achievers Corner Billy Gray (Year 9) has been selected as a member of the Victorian Secondary Schools’ Sports Association Under 15 Boys Touch Football team. This team will compete in the annual School Sport Australia Sport Championship which will be held this year in Coffs Harbour, NSW, from 23rd October to 28th October. It is expected that teams from each state and territory will be represented. Harry Haley (Year 12S), Jake Williams (Year 12H) and Michael Stizza (Year 12R) have been selected in the ACC Senior Football Team of the Year.
