The Princess and the Dragon Princess Carolyn, 13 All day I have had to follow my parents around. They said “it’s so you know what to do when you become queen.” But I don’t believe any of it. I think it’s just so they can keep an extra eye on me because I am at the age where people really want to harm me and use me for ransom since I mean a lot to the kingdom. So for their sake I just followed them around all day and didn’t cause any trouble for them. So when it got to the end of the day and everything had calmed down I snuck out of the palace and wandered off into the woods. Throughout the woods I saw many lovely flowers and several birds came by me and greeted me with flower crowns as I descended deeper into the forest. Walking through the forest made me think of when I was younger. My father and I would always walk through the forest together and explore. Now he thinks it is too dangerous for me in the forest. Father has told me “There are many new creatures that have come into the forest recently and we don’t know if these creatures are dangerous or not. That’s why I don’t want you to go into the forest anymore. I don’t want anything to hurt you.” He explained it to me five years ago. I am seventeen now and he still doesn't want me to go into the forest but I still go anyway because it is the only place I truly feel at peace. As I descended further into the woods I started hearing a sound. It sounded like something was hurt. Something was in pain. That's when I came upon it. It was a humongous Dragon. Its scales were as dark as midnight, their eyes as red as blood. Their wings were the size of a ship, and their claws looked like they could kill something with one swipe. I was about to look away when I heard it wince. I quickly turned back and looked a tad bit closer. I saw the magnificent dragon had a big cut on one of their arms. At that moment I felt really bad for it so I thought it would be a good idea to try and heal. So I slowly started approaching it when its big head yanked around and looked directly at me. It started growling at me and tried to move away. But because its arm was still injured it started wincing again and stopped in its tracks.

Then I quickly responded by saying, “Wait, don't be scared! I really don’t want to hurt you! I see you are hurt and I want to help if you would let me!” I exclaimed. The dragon looked at me straight in the eyes and I looked straight back into their eyes. After what seemed to be ages of this the dragon reluctantly laid down and stuck its arm out towards me. I looked up at the dragon and slowly walked to its hurt arm. I kneeled down and softly pressed my hands against its wound. Immediately I felt the dragon pull away a little bit and I heard them make a small wincing sound but right after they moved their arm back to let me help them like I said I would. Therefore to stay to what I exclaimed I took a breath in and let my magic flow through me. I closed my eyes and pictured the dragon's arm all healed up with no scar or mark left behind. After a couple seconds of this I opened my I and lifted my hands off the dragon's now healed arm. I got up, took a few steps away from it and looked up at the dragon. The dragon looked at its arm then back at me and just stared at me for some time. That's when I saw purple mist from around me and the dragon. I looked down to the ground and couldn't see my feet. So I looked back up at the dragon and they were gone only the mist and a bright glow from where they once were. Then all of a sudden I heard a thud. I heard the thud from the direction the dragon once was so I started walking that way to see if something was there. Though the closer I got to where the dragon used to be it got harder and harder to see because more mist kept forming. The only way I knew I was going in the right direction was because the glow was still where the dragon used to be. So I used the light as a guide and navigated my way towards the glow. The closer I got the glow kept intensifying. It got to the point where I could hardly see anything. I thought I might go blind. Suddenly the just went away. The light was gone. The only thing left was the mysterious purple mist and darkness around me. This alarmed me and caused me to trip. I landed on something really squishy and warm so I didn’t hurt myself thankfully. But then I heard a voice that sounded really close to me yell,“Ow! That hurt!

Out of habit I quickly started to apologize. “I am so sorry. I didn’t know someone else was out here and I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going.” “Well can you at least get off of me?”

“Yes of course!” I quickly moved off of the person I had landed on and blushed a little bit out of embarrassment. I tried to offer them my hand to help them up but they pushed it away and got up their self. The mysterious purple mist started to slowly go away making me able to see this person. I took one look at them down then back up and all I could think of at that moment was “Gosh they look really hot.” From what I could see they were a young female close to my age. They wore a gorgeous black and purple dress with finger less fishnet gloves. They hair was as black as the sky at night, and luscious looking. Hair as wavy as a waterfall. She looked absolutely stunning. Then I was broken out of my trance when she stated, Don’t you know it’s rude to stare at people?” “Oh of course! I am so sorry it’s just your really beautiful.” “Oh. Well thank you I suppose.” “If I may ask what is your name?” My name? Why does that concern you? The thing that should concern you most is how you are getting back to wherever you came from.” “Well I could say the same thing to you how are you going to get back home?” “I actually know where I am and every part of these woods. So I know the direction back to my home. So while you ponder how you are getting home I am going to leave.” She started walking off into the woods which scared me because I would be alone again. So I quickly dashed up and said “wait!” She twirled around and asked me “And why should I wait?”

“You know every part of these woods right?” Yes” “So can you lead me back to my home? I will even pay you I just need your help please!” “Hmmmm fine I will help you only because you seem really desperate.” “Thank you so much!” “Yeah yeah don’t thank me yet. So where is your home anyway? I can’t lead you home if I don’t know where I am going.” “Oh right! I live in the kingdom of nature.” “Evervale?” “Yes! Evervale the kingdom of nature.” “Oh I see hmmmm.” “Is something wrong?” “No No! Nothing is wrong let’s just get going it should be getting dark soon.” “Right ok let’s go.” With that we went off. She lead the way and I followed quietly behind her not making a peep. But after a while of us not talking I just couldn’t stand the quiet anymore so I started with asking the simple of “What do you like to do when you have free time?” And things went on from there. I was actually surprised when they answered. So the rest of the way back to my home we talked to each other and it turned out we really had a lot in common. Eventually we got back to my kingdom and I had to say my farewells to this girl who helped me.“Here it is the kingdom of nature Evervale,” she announced. “Thank you for your help guiding me back home”

No problem it was nothing. Now I guess I will be on my way now goodbye” ““Wait!” I yelled ”before you go what is your name if you mind telling me.” “Why are you interested in my name,” she said with a smirk. “I just want to know since we talked so much and maybe one day I will see you again.” “Hmmmm ok but tell me your name first.” “Ok that seems fair. My name is Brie Princess of the nature kingdom heir to the throne of Evervale.” “Wait really!?!? You’re being serious?” “Yes I am.” “Well I guess I should tell you who I am now. Remember that dragon you saw in the forest?” “Yes. Wait how do you know about that?!?” “Well that dragon was me. I am princess Luna of the shifters. I got upset earlier today so I shifted and flew off to blow off some steam. I ended up going in the forest and I couldn’t unshift. That was until you healed me so thank you for that.” “Wow I guess we both were hiding something,” I laughed. “Yes it seems so. Well I still have to go so I guess this is farewell. “It doesn’t have to be though. When can send letters to each other.” “You’re right that could work.”

“Ok let’s do that and you can just call me Brie.” “Ok Brie than you can just call me Luna. Well farewell I will be looking forward to your letters.” “Farewell Luna!” I waved back. Luna turned around and started on her way back home and so did I. Over time we sent each other letters more and more frequently and after a while it became a daily thing. But than one day something ruined it all.

I just got a letter from Brie a few days ago formally inviting my kingdom to partake in the unity festival. When I saw it I was so excited I almost fell out my window because I was sitting on the rail when I read it. So I brought it up to my parents later at dinner and they agreed saying “It would be good for our people and our kingdoms to be united.” So now today I am going over what outfit to wear for the festival. I finally decided since it would be really warm today at the festival and all to wear some nice black shorts with a black tank top. I put on my purple sneakers and some purple sunglasses and my outfit was complete. I rushed down to the foyer and I could barely hold my excitement and I am definitely sure my parents could tell. “You seem quite chipper this morning don’t you Luna?” My Mother asked. “I am just excited for the festival!” “Really or are you just excited to see princess Brie?” My Father countered. “I don’t know what you're talking about like I said I am just excited for the festival though I do want to see Brie already. It is really just that I am excited for the festival, nothing less and nothing more.” I blushed knowing that was all a lie and I truly did want to see Brie. It has been a year since we last saw each other in person when we were invited to the kingdom of Evervales four year annual ball. Ever since that ball was over I have yearned for another chance to see her in person again. I would take any excuse to go back to Evervale and see Brie again so of course I am excited that today is finally the festival of unity. Meaning I will get to see Brie again and I really cannot wait to see her. Plus I have a surprise in store for her today.

Today is the day I propose to her and ask for her hand in marriage. I had bought the ring a month after the ball and today will be the day it finally sees the light. “Sure just keep saying that to yourself darling. Anyway, let's be on our way to the festival.” With Father's words we all went outside and we were on our way to the festival. After an hour or two we finally arrived at the festival. There were people from all of the kingdoms already there including my own kingdom. The carriage finally came to a stop when we got all the way up to Evervales castle. I opened my door and there waiting for us was Brie and her parents. Me and Brie rushed to each other and we fully embraced each other in a tight hug. We stood there hugging each other but then let go of each other when we were both brought back to reality by both of Brie’s parents saying,“Just kiss already!” Both of our faces turned red and Brie stammered “Oh my god st- stop you two are so embarrassing.” “Well we are just saying what we see and you two both have those heart eyes right now.” Her mother stated. Then my father added “It’s very visibly clear you two have it for each other as far as anyone here can see. You two should really just go out already. It's sort of sad to keep watching this go on.” Before I could get a word in he quickly added that he and mom were going inside with Brie’s parents and said “We will let you too love birds do your thing see you later.” With that our parents were gone and I was alone with Brie. “I apologize for my parents. I am so sorry for that!” Brie blurted out. “I am too. I didn't know my father would jump in like that” I commended. Since you are here now would you go to the festival with me Luna?” In return I obviously said yes so Brie and I went down to the festival and partook in all the events. The day was going so well and I won Brie a prize at a game but then suddenly we all heard a big thud. What was that!” Brie yelled. “I am not sure but I think it came from the forest.” Thud! Thud! “Whatever it is, it's getting closer! We need to evacuate the people to the castle immediately” Brie stated. “Ok you evacuate the people I will take care of whatever this is.” “Are you sure you can do it by yourself?” “Of course now hurry and evacuate everyone as fast as you can.”

Brie nodded and began clearing every one out and into the castle for safety. Everyone was in the castle in no time leaving me out here with only whatever is coming. Thud! Thud! Louder and louder it got until I saw what we were dealing with. I was a big slime monster and as soon as it spotted me it went into action. It jumped up and attempted to land on me but I dodged out of the way in time. I knew I wouldn’t be able to beat it with any weapon or just my regular magic. So I shifted into my dragon form leaving a light purple mist. Before it could attack me again I went into action and sent fireballs its way. It couldn’t move in time and took all of them head on. Then I flew behind the slime and started making wind currents and the slime flew into the sky and landed right before the kingdom gates. I thought it would come right back and attack me but it just started squirming away back into the woods. So I flew over to the castle and when I landed I shifted back to my human form. Brie came running and embraced me and I hugged her back. She started saying how cool I was and how thankful she was for me being able to get rid of the slime. When she was done I backed up a little and bent down on one knee and asked “Brie will you honor me by giving me your hand in marriage and marry me?” That’s when I pulled out the ring. Brie gasped and yelled “Yes Yes a million times yes!” So I got up from my knee, slid the ring on her finger and we both kissed each other. Then we quickly stopped when we heard our parents say “Finally! You Finally did it!” Then they started cheering which made us both blush out of embarrassment. From that day forward me and Brie were together and lived out our happily ever after.

Nick of Time A.S., 13 We only have one Timepiece. It’s government-issued and it sits on the mantel in our living room. We used to have more, before the Percepts. Before me. The first victim in decades. No known cure. Phase in and out forever. Nothing we can do. Phrases float in and out of my head as the conversation between my mother and the doctor goes on for I don’t know how long, but one word sticks in my mind, never to be erased. Chronopoena. That’s the scientific name for what I have, though most people call it timephasing. I could blink and find hours have passed. Fall asleep and wake up a century later — thank the Hourglass it’s never happened, but it could. My skin tingles from the pricks of needles, the burn of alcohol on my bare cuts. I wiggle my fingers, willing feeling back into them, though whether it’s from lack of use or the sheer amount of serums these so-called specialists have injected into me that they’ve gone numb, I’m not sure. I feel a hand on my shoulder and focus my eyes to find the doctor shining a light into them. “Nikyn?” The way he says my name sounds vague. Wrong. I open my mouth, but fail to make discernable words. For a brief moment, I wonder if this is how Zeven feels when he tries to talk. I nod to the doctor’s question — I didn’t hear him, but he stares at me as if expecting an answer. A troubled look passes over his face, but I’m too tired, too shocked to try to make it go away. I’ve read books about people with chronopoena. They don’t get to have normal lives. They normally end up in containment chambers or testing facilities. Deep in my bones, I know my mother wouldn’t let that happen to me if she could help it, but the same feeling tells me she won’t be able to.

“We’ll have to report this to the Hourglass.” The sentence jerks me out of my mental fog. I half-expect my mother to ask them not to, to offer them something in exchange for their silence like I know my grandfather would if he were here. But she says nothing, only nods. She stands and I stand with her. “Thank you,” she says, though the doctor did nothing but destroy everything we ever knew. The doctor bows his head slightly in response, and I know I should echo my mother, but I cannot be thankful for such a verdict. Zeven raises an eyebrow at our grave faces as we enter the kitchen. His question is clear: What happened? I exchange a look with my mother in an unspoken conversation both of us understand. I take a deep breath. “I have chronopoena.” I am surprised at the steadiness of my voice, though all of us know what this means. Zeven’s eyebrows furrow in a way that reminds me of our father. My older brother sets down the knife he was using to dice onions and points to the picture of Father on the counter across from him, eyes questioning. My mother nods. “Like Jecht.” Her slip of the tongue alerts us to how worried she really is. She never calls our father by his first name. It’s always ‘your father.’ Zeven looks at me worriedly. Zeven visibly grimaces and his fingers drum on the counter like they always do when he wants to say something. My mother crosses the room seemingly without moving — I didn’t lose seconds, it’s a talent she’s always had — and places gentle hands on my brother’s shoulders. “It’ll be okay.” “Yeah, Zev,” I say, trying for a smile. “It’ll be a couple of months before it gets severe.” My brother still looks dubious, but I can see him trying to maintain his composure — for his sake or ours, I’m not sure.

What’s Out There Freddi, 18 I’m watching the sunrise through the open window of my apartment. It’s one of the few things that can calm my ever-present anxiety about the New Plague. The world has become a shadow of itself. Industries stopped making supplies, the internet cut out, electricity stopped working, and governments collapsed. It’s as if the world has reverted back to Medieval times when there were no countries and it was every kingdom for itself. In my case, I’m the ruler and subject. I’ve been by myself since the beginning and eleven months of solitude is starting to show. Last week, I realized that I was talking to myself. I guess it’s my brain’s way of coping. That scared me enough to make me decide to do something I never thought I would: I’m leaving. I mean, I’ve gone on supply runs because I didn’t stock up on food for more than a few weeks when I heard about the pandemic, but I always came back. I’ve been too scared that I’ll catch the New Plague. Before the world collapsed, scientists were saying that it originated in cats. If ever a time to celebrate that I’m a dog person. Scientists decided to name the disease the New Plague because the symptoms are nearly identical to the original plague, Black Death. Infected are feverish, weak, and blood seeps into their skin, killing the cells. There are some differences though, such as their dead skin turning green and they can’t tell what is and isn’t real because the disease eats away at their brain. I’ve heard that victims sometimes kill their loved ones because they don’t know who they are anymore.

My theory as to why the dead skin turns green is that this is nature’s revenge upon humanity for what we’ve done to earth. I wouldn’t trust my ideas much though because I’m not a scientist. I just have an overactive imagination. The only reason I know this information is because of news stations before the internet went out. I’ve never seen one of the infected. Anyway, that’s why I haven’t left. But now, I’m losing my mind being here alone. Still, that doesn’t change the fact that I’m terrified of leaving. What if people are out there killing each other? What if I’m all that’s left? What if I get sick? But what if there are others out there, like me, that need help? Closing my eyes, I take a deep breath of fresh air– is it considered fresh if there’s a chance of disease in it? –to stop what I know will become a downward spiral. I feel a cold and wet nose rub against my palm. “Good morning to you too, Mandy,” I say as I crouch down and pet my dog’s head. “I would’ve gone crazy long ago without you.” She tilts her head as her tail wags back and forth. I stand up and shut the window, sighing as I walk over to my awaiting bag and wagon. I’m not about to make a journey to who knows where for who knows how long without having something to carry my supplies. It even hooks to the back of my bike. I got the supplies I need yesterday: new clothes, canned food, camping gear, and some new books. I’ll need entertainment when I stop to rest and I’ve read all the books I own at least three times now. I guess this forces the book-lovers of the world to read the books they’ve been putting off until later.

It takes several trips up and down the stairs for me to get all my supplies to the parking lot. Not having an elevator when you live on the twelfth floor really sucks. I look into my first–and potentially last– apartment one last time. Mandy nuzzles my hand as a tear rolls down my cheek. “You’re such a good girl,” I tell her as I shut the door and lock it out of habit. We make it back to the supplies and I start packing it all into the wagon. I cover it with a tarp before strapping it in with bungee cords. I sigh as I rub a hand over my choppily shorn hair. Having long hair in an apocalypse is unwise because there’s not much running water when the world collapses. I tie Mandy’s leash to one of the handlebars and use my foot to lift the kickstand. Whatever’s out there, I’m going to find it.

The Gaming Disaster Jaden, 12 Once there was a kid named Matt. Matt was 15 years old and would spend all of his free time playing video games. Matt plays video games a lot to escape from the real world. He considers his life to be nothing but disappointment. When he was 7 years old he watched his dad get shot and killed at a gas station and ever since that day his mom has been depressed and hard on Matt. Matt hated his life and the only thing that was dear to him was his best friend Joshua and his video games. One Friday afternoon in Los Angeles, Matt and Joshua planned being sick that day so they would not have to go to school so they could grind the new season of their favorite game “Forest of the Beasts”. Matt called Joshua “Hey are you ready to play?, he said. “Yeah I was able to trick my mom, she is out buying me medicine.” Joshua replied. “Bro I can’t believe the new update finally released after all these months!” Matt exclaimed. Both of the boys successfully tricked their parents into letting them stay home so they could play their new game. After many hours of playing their games the boys were famished and decided to go offline. Matt was hungry but there was nothing in the refrigerator that he could pick up and eat. With his mom at work she could not make anything for Matt. Matt was stuck with no ideas, but remembered that there was a small gas station down the street. Matt didn’t like going to that gas station because that's where he watched his dad die, but Matt was left with no other options. Matt put on his old Jordan’s and strolled down to the gas station watching his surroundings when all of a sudden “Boom”. There were gunshots flying right past Matt’s head. “OHHH NOOO” yelled Matt. Matt ran behind the gas station for cover. As he was running he tripped in a 2 inch deep puddle making his already torn Jordans worse.

Matt fell onto the muddy ground right in front of a dark blue hard drive that had “Proj3ct #223” written on it in white paint. He swiftly got up and grabbed the harddrive and quickly dipped through the back of the gas station. He waited 10 mins before going home. After the 10 mins passed Matt walked home in complete shock as if he saw his own ghost floating right in front of him. Matt reached his house and the second he walked inside he locked the door and ran up to his room and slammed the door shut “Bang”. He rushed over to his console and plugged in the harddrive. All of a sudden his computer went black and there was electricity flying everywhere. One of the bolts hit the ceiling of his room and landed on Matt’s head leaving him unconscious. A few moments later, Matt woke up in a daze, but once he regained control he realized that he was no longer in Los Angeles, but in his favorite game “ Forest of the Beasts”. “No way!’ Said Matt. “I’m in my game.” Matt was excited to be in his game, but that excitement quickly left when he heard a deafening roar as loud as an atomic bomb coming from right behind him. Matt quickly ran without any hesitation, he ran and ran until he saw a light ahead. He ran towards the light thinking it was a way out, but it ended up being a sleeping ground with more than 500 creatures currently resting. He mistook a creature's bright neon body as the sun. Matt had no idea where to go because if he went forward he is stuck against 500 creatures and if he goes back it’s the fear of finding out where that roar came from. Matt completely froze and felt a vibration coming from his back pocket when he remembered he had his phone with him. It was Joshua calling out of excitement Matt answered yelling “JOSHUA I NEED HELP!” but the second he finished the sentence all of the creatures that were resting quickly woke up glaring at Matt with an extreme look of bloodlust in their eyes.

Matt ran like never before, but the creatures took off after him at insane speed. Matt knew he was dead until he heard “What’s wrong, where are you?” coming from his phone. Matt started tearing up “ Joshua, it’s over…I”M GOING TO DIE”. Joshua had no idea what was going on so without a thought he packed his bags and ran over to Matt’s house. “Beep” the call ended. Matt was still running for his life when he saw a hole underground Matt slide into the hole holding his breath so the creatures could not hear him. After waiting a few minutes in the hole the creatures gave up trying to find him and went back to their resting place. When Joshua reached the house the door was locked, but at the time he had no regard for the law because his best friend was in danger. He grabbed a nearby rock and threw it through the kitchen window, he hopped in through the window and ran upstairs to Matt’s room. Joshua busted right through the door and the first thing he noticed was Matt on the computer screen. Joshua calls Matt back “Matt please tell me you aren’t in the game right now.” Joshua asked in a worried tone. “Yes, I am but I think I know how to get out.” Matt said. “Just pull the harddrive out of the console and I should return back to normal.” Joshua asked no questions and followed Matt’s orders and proceeded to take out the harddrive. Out of nowhere there was electricity flashing everywhere and there was a big, bright flash coming from the computer screen. Within a puff of smoke appeared Matt crying and covered in mud. Joshua ran to hug Matt both confused, but glad that Matt made it back. A few seconds later Matt’s mom pulled up shocked seeing a hole in the window thinking there was an intruder. She ran in and went up to Matt to confirm his safety; she busted through the door in complete horror to see his room all messed up. Before she could let out a grasp Matt ran into his mom’s arms and started weeping. Matt explained to his mom what happened, but since she was a parent it was hard for her to actually believe this story but she eventually gave in and trusted her son.

A few months passed since the incident Matt has been less into his game and more involved in his real life. Matt’s mom has been showing Matt more love than she has before. Joshua would rarely play games anymore, but would still hop on to run duos with Matt every once in a while. Matt and Joshua both grew their friends list. Matt also wrote a book about his experience and is considering making a movie. Then one day, Matt was riding his bike home from school, enjoying his life when he fell off into a pile of leaves. Matt felt something poking his back when he fell in. He reached down for it and felt a square shaped object. A chill ran down his spine. He picked the object up to reveal a harddrive with the writing, “Proj3ct #224 The New Model.”
