WHERE YOUR HISTORY IS CREATED

De Historiske – historic hotels & restaurants – is a unique membership organisation con t ain i ng many of Norway’s most charming hotels and restaurants. A very definite perception of the responsibilities of the proprietor is required to qualify, with the relating of history forming the setting for the guests’ own overnight stay and gastronomic experience. Our aim is to use the past as a backdrop for our guests, to enable them to create their own history based on experiences. It is our hope that these narrations may continue to live in the memories of our guests long after their return home.

Although the members of De Historiske each have their own distinctive character, you will find that they have features in common: a warm welcome, good service, a friendly atmosphere and high quality in every respect. The quality standards that the group has in common ensure a generally high standard in the group, and our values of “hospitable”, “personal” and “quality conscious” shall aid us in achieving our shared vision: Take your story home.

Welcome!

A WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE IN HISTORIC SURROUNDINGS!

De Historiske historic hotels & restaurants are visible evidence of our past. At the same time, they are evidence that the past continues to live in the present. We want to offer our guests experiences against the backdrop of our history, so that they in turn have their own stories to recount in the future. Thus you create your own history. The members of De Historiske are brimming with experiences, both inside and outside. Here are some examples:

Outdoor activities

Play a round or two of golf, try your luck at angling, go hunting or horse riding, play a little tennis, take a dip in the pool, feel the wind in your sails, go downhill skiing, soak up the landscape from a horse and carriage, or go glacier walking. All these activities and more are available in the vicinity of De Historiske.

A romantic excursion, or time for yourself!

Leave the hustle and bustle, and enjoy a little time with your loved one. Our luxury settings or delightful wellbeing centres will undoubtedly spoil you and revitalize you to cope with a hectic everyday life.

Delicious food and wines

Our members offer some of the best available in the choice of food and wines. You are served in a style that transforms your meal into a feast. Dinner is served!

Our multi-faceted culture

A multitude of cultural experiences await you both at the De Historiske and in their surroundings. If you are interested in cultural history, pictorial art, arts and crafts, architecture, music or interior decorating, a tour of our member hotels is an experience in itself. If you want to go to museums, theatres or exhibitions, or to enjoy the landscape, whether natural or cultural, you will find just about all you want within a short distance of our members.

HISTORIC HOTELS

Our hotels are not “ordinary” hotels. They are landed estates, country houses, manors, large and small timber-built hotels in pseudo-Swiss and Jugend (Art Nouveau) style, old coaching inns and many more historic buildings that have been transformed into beautiful, small, romantic hotels. This, and the passion we feel about our role as hosts, is what primarily characterises De Historiske!

A stay at one of our hotels is above all about giving you a warm, personal and welcoming experience in an atmosphere of real quality where the focus is always on the guest. We offer fine cuisine based on the very best ingredients, vintage wines from our wine cellars, original artworks on the walls, cultural experiences of the highest quality, interiors and decorations based on long traditions, first-class service and comfort, exciting history, a romantic

atmosphere, peace and quiet, spa treatments, golf and much, much more. Our hotels represent much more than a comfortable bed and a good meal: first and foremost we represent a rich diversity of experiences and ac tivities, both indoors and outdoors. Your challenge is to choose something you don’t want to miss! No m atter what you choose, we will always do our best to make you feel that this is “a good place to be”.

Welcome!

Energihotellet is a design hotel situated in the small village of Nesflaten along RV13 (highway 13), midway between Trolltunga and Preikestolen. The hotel was designed in the 1960s by the renowned architect Geir Grung and built as part of Norsk Hydro’s power plant, Røldal-Suldal Kraft. The hotel has many original features such as our gilded fireplace and collection of lounge chairs by Sven Ivar Dysthe. The functionalist-brutalist architecture challenges our preconceptions of the building style we would expect to see in a small village in Western Norway. He dried fish caught by local fishermen, salted countless barrels of herring, produced cod liver oil, and ran shipping services and a busy country store. Today, a new generation of proprietors continues to enhance and develop Støtt Old Trading Post. It is restored and upgraded with modern amenities. Restaurant Gammelbutikken proudly prepares dishes from the freshest fish and the finest locally sourced ingredients. Your luxurious lodgings offer warm down duvets, and the salty sea breeze is conducive to a good night’s sleep. At the top of the Helgeland coast, Støtt is surrounded by thousands of islets, sandy beaches, crystal-clear seas and towering mountains. It’s a magnificent setting for a wide range of seaborne and land-based activities. Welcome to Støtt, the perfect base for your Helgeland adventures!

Sundvolden Hotel

As far back as 1648, it is known with certainty that people stayed at Sundvolden. At the time, a woman named Marthe ran a small guest house at Sundvolden between Steinsfjorden and Tyrifjorden, and ferried travellers across the strait. Arne Laeskogen, Tord’s father, bought the hotel in 1965. Back then the hotel was run-down and old, but Arne loved it nonetheless. He married Bjørg Moe from Røyse in 1966, and they started running the hotel together. The collaboration worked well, and from running a hotel with 20 beds and a sofa, the hotel now has 525 beds and can serve 800 guests at once. Today, Sundvolden Hotel is focused on sustainability, local ingredients, home-cooked food and premium service. Our vision is loved by our guests and admired by our competitors.

The first licensed premises in Svinøya opened in 1831. Svinøya is a small, vibrant fishing village on an island in Svolvær Harbour. The fishermen’s shacks are idyllically located near the fisheries, drying racks, and old, traditional buildings in the local style. Svinøya is striking, with dramatic ocean views on one side and breathtaking Lofoten mountains on the other. Our restaurant, Børsen Spiseri, is situated on the merchants’ wharf dating from 1828. It is the most highly regarded restaurant in Lofoten, and stockfish is its specialty. The opportunity to study this way of life close up is a unique experience. Søstrene Storaas hotell

The Storaas Sisters’ hotel is situated on the property of Moen Farm, a small farm built during the 1750s. Today the farm hosts a beautiful garden with herbs and vegetables as well as free range pigs and sheep all through summer, and a high-tech hydroponics plant that provides the hotel with fresh ingredients all year round. At the hotel, you can experience our unique family history. It all started when we inherited a crocodile – which it turned out had eaten our great-great-grandfather’s dog! Our great-great-grandfather also had eight daughters with three different women, from three different continents during the beginning of the 1900s. This led us to collect multiple exciting family stories from all over the world! Today, these stories inspire everything we do.

It started, like any good love story, with a bucket of fish in a dogyard. Johnny Trasti came by to deliver the fish to feed Trine Lyrek’s huskies and invited himself in for a cup of coffee. The rest is history. Two creative souls found each other and built a family based on each of their passions; food and dogsledding. Johnny is a trained chef with more than 30 years of experience, who has won national recognition. He moved back from Oslo to Alta to challenge himself as a chef and to use the amazing ingredients that you can only find in the very north. Trine, on the other hand, found her passion through a love for nature and a discovery that there is no better way to experience it than from the dogsled. This is a passion that Trine’s daughter, Hanna Lyrek, who is also an important part of Trasti and Trine, inherited and is carrying on both through guiding and competitive dogmushing.

HISTORIC RESTAURANTS

Norwegian food traditions are deeply rooted in Norwegian culture, to this very day. The challenge is to find these gastronomic experiences outside the Norwegian home. Accordingly, we offer a concept designed to highlight historic restaurants in Norway.

The Historic Restaurants group is constantly increasing its membership. See www.dehistoriske.com for updates on new members.

How will our guests benefit?

First and foremost, through access to information about historical restaurants in a town or area that you may not be familiar with. The hotel you are staying in will help you book a table at a historical restaurant, and guests living at a Historical Hotel will be given priority. It will be reassuring to know that

the restaurant radiates an atmosphere of “a good place to be”, and sets a high standard in terms of service and quality. Our main objective is to fulfil your expectations that the meal should be an experience. Accordingly, the Historic Restaurants are bent on providing you with a unique food and wine experience provided by an enthusiastic staff possessing sound gastronomic knowledge. Our intention is to leave you with such a deep impression that you spread the word of your enjoyment to a wider audience.

Dinner is served!

Apotekergata No. 5

Apotekergata No. 5, once a storied warehouse, now houses a restaurant, café, and bar, boasting a charming barge for those balmy days where views and local fare can be savored. Norwegian nature is both ruthless and demanding, but it is also generous. Our chefs find their muse in the resilience of local farmers, fishermen, and hunters who – against all odds – procure exceptional ingredients. Set against this rugged canvas, we aim to present the essence of Sunnmøre’s gastronomy – a journey from the soaring summits to the fathomless ocean. We invite you to experience Apotekergata No. 5.

In 1855 local farmers established the distillery Atlungstad Brenneri. They started an industrial adventure producing potato spirits, aquavit, cognac and church wine. The industrial production lasted until 2008 when the restoration to rescue the distillery as a working industrial heritage started. Atlungstad Brenneri is the oldest working distillery in Norway, still producing potato spirits and aquavit. In 2019 the distillery was preserved as a technical and industrial heritage building, to present the story of the Norwegian distilleries and aquavit. A visit to Atlungstad Brenneri is an experience using all senses, and a trip through the Norwegian food and beverage culture. In 1927, Oslo architect Lars Backer won the competition to design the new Ekebergrestauranten. The original restaurant was built as early as 1916, by Tiedemanns tobacco factory. Two years after the competition, in 1929, one of Europe’s foremost buildings in the functionalist style was complete, to the delight of all the people of Oslo. Today it is a listed building, and any renovation work is based on the idea of cherishing the classic style but modern-sing it for a new age. Towards the end of the 1990s, Ekebergrestauranten was closed and left to deteriorate, until Christian Ringnes and Eiendomsspar bought the site and announced a large-scale investment. Together with restaurateur Bjørn Tore Furset, they have now created a modern building that still retains all its classic features.

In 1865, consul Thomas Heftye bought the land around today’s Frognerseter, and in 1884 he opened an open-air museum with five buildings that he brought in from different parts of the country. Kristiania municipality bought the site from Heftye’s widow in 1889. The municipality immediately started building Frognerseteren, and in 1891 the oldest part of the house was finished. DE HISTORISKE IS HELPING TO MAKE TOURISM MORE SUSTAINABLE!

For generations, many of De Historiske’s member hotels and restaurants have sought to offer their guests a flavour of Norway’s history – ideally with local ingredients, cultural history and a distinctive style of hospitality. For our members to deliver on this, Norway’s brand as a tourism destination must nurture the country’s unique natural and cultural values. This is why cooperation in the tourism industry is important, and De Historiske has contributed to and is a signatory to the “Roadmap for Norway’s tourism industry”. The industry holds enormous potential for low-emission solutions, is labour intensive, touches on many economic sectors along the value chain, and can nurture Norway’s natural and cultural capital by shifting towards greener, cross-sectoral and experience-based hospitality. This is important for De Historiske, and our

hotels and restaurants enable our guests to experience architectural styles, historical buildings and local food, and enjoy friendly, genuine and innovative hospitality.

De Historiske’s members are representatives of both authentic experiences and genuine Norwegian traditions, and take pride in nurturing nature, culture and the environment of their home town. Our members work continuously to reduce food waste, develop menus in close collaboration with local producers and suppliers, exploit geothermal and seawater heating, offer their guests bikes to explore the local area, etc. This is sustainability in practice, and De Historiske has also been certified by Miljøfyrtårn – the Eco-lighthouse foundation – ensuring continuous development in the best interests of the environment.
