THE MATCHBOXES Preciously guarded by Ernst Andrea Scherz since the 1980s, they reflect the Scherz family’s attachment to luxury hospitality. They tell the tale of travels, favourites and the person who presided over the destiny of the Leading Hotels of the World. From 1974 to 1989, Ernst Andrea Scherz directed the hotel association, THE LEADING HOTELS OF EUROPE & EGYPT which under his leadership became THE LEADING HOTELS OF THE WORLD. A hotel collection incorporating the best addresses in the world with more than 400 hotels in 80 countries.
The Gstaad Palace joined this famous institution in the 1950s. In 2015, Ernst Scherz was elected Leading Legend of the year. A distinction which paid tribute to the passion with which for the past three generations the Gstaad Palace has offered its guests rare and authentic experiences, to his style of hospitality as well as to his commitment to preserving and developing independent luxury hospitality. A title also awarded to his lifelong friend, Jean-Jacques Gauer, owner of the Lausanne Palace & Spa. Today, the Gstaad Palace is one of the last 5* hotels in Switzerland still in family ownership.
