DEFIANCE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement…to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

THIS IS DEFIANCE COLLEGE

For the past four years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College was also selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its Community Engagement Classification.

The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2012-2013 year in Belize and Cambodia, and will travel to Tanzania during the 2013-14 academic year. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness, with the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum, and Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization. Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity. Approximately 10,000 men and women across the globe claim Defiance College as their alma mater, and they excel in all walks of life.

ATHENA MILLER - HEAD COACH

Athena Miller enters her third season in charge of the swimming and diving programs at Defiance College. Miller, who was hired on March 9, 2012, became the second head coach for the Yellow Jacket men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams in the second year of the programs. Miller earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Mount Union in 2008 with minors in economics and sport management. During her time with the Purple Raiders, Miller was a four-year letterwinner for UMU on the track and field team, as well as on the swimming and diving squads. The Wadsworth, Ohio native boasts nine years of coaching experience in the pool, ranging from stints as a youth swim instructor to stops at the club, prep and collegiate levels. Miller’s coaching career began in 2003 as a swim instructor at the Wadsworth Youth Center, before serving on staff at Mount Union for the 2006 campaign. Miller then worked as an assistant for the Hudson Heat club program for two seasons, while also helping launch the first-ever swimming and diving programs during her two years on staff at Malone College.

Since her time at Malone, Miller spent four seasons as the head coach at Stow Munroe Falls High, while also working as the assistant coach for the highly respected Firestone Akron Swim Team for two years. During that time, Miller coached a pair of Stow High athletes to Ohio State Division I qualifying marks and mentored an Olympic Trial Qualifier with Firestone Akron.

RYAN DAFFORN - ASSISTANT COACH

Ryan Dafforn began his career as an assistant coach for the Defiance College swim team on January 2, 2013. His focus with the squad will be on coaching diving. He graduated from Purdue University in May of 2011, where he earned a degree in communication with a dual minor in psychology and sociology. During his career at Purdue, the former Boilermaker was a four-year varsity letterman on the men’s swimming and diving team. Dafforn earned Academic AllBig Ten Honors from 2008 through 2011 for his performance in the classroom, as well as in the water. Dafforn helped lead his team to four consecutive National Collegiate Athletic Association division one Top-25 finishes. Dafforn also took part in the Boiler Communication Student-Run Public Relations Firm during his senior season in West Lafayette, Ind. As an account associate intern, he worked to ensure client deadlines and tasks were met, including creating press releases and other creative materials for fundraising and recap reporting programs.

The Purdue product comes to the Yellow Jackets with three-years of coaching experience. During the summers from 2005 to 2007, Dafforn was the assistant swim and dive coach at the Avalon Summer Sports Club in Fort Wayne, Ind. In other job experience, Dafforn worked as an account associate for Emanate Public Relations in New York, New York from June 2011 to August 2012. Dafforn will work towards a master’s degree in education during his time at Defiance.
