Defiance College Yellow Jackets WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT DC VOLLEYBALL 2013 Dear Fellow DC Fan: It is a real pleasure to welcome you to our campus and to today’s game. We at Defiance College are extremely proud of our wonderful athletic program and of the many other activities taking place at DC. The students whom you are watching today are an important part of our larger DC family, and they are among the approximately 1000 DC students who benefit from the dedication and assistance provided by our wonderful faculty, alumni, staff, administrators, and friends. Students at DC receive a wide range of distinctive experiences as we strive to offer our students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. What does this mean? It means that our students start working with us before they even start their classes to put together distinctive Personal Success Plans, so that we can work with them to tailor their DC education and experiences to their own individual interests and goals. Throughout their four years at Defiance, our students benefit from a broad range of activities and experiences that are structured both to help them achieve their individual dreams and also to enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. As part of that approach, we work with our students to help them develop their own Defiance College Resume. DC students also participate in a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities that give students distinctive hands-on experiences in their relevant fields. Just to name a few examples, we are proud of the work that our Criminal Justice students do in investigating cold cases for the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in Detroit; our Education students get hands-on experience working in classrooms as early as their freshman year; Science students run and manage a 200+ acre wildlife preserve; through our Business Advantage Program, business, marketing, finance, sales, accounting and other students get hands-on experiences creating and running actual businesses. I could go on and on in terms of the different opportunities for our Communications, Sport Management, Pre-Med, Social Work, Graphic Design, and students in many other areas. We are all particularly proud of the great work that our students have done in running Project 701, a unique student-run, separately-legally-incorporated non-profit, in which DC students create, develop, run and manage service projects. From working with the two hospitals in town to run a free primary-care clinic to micro-finance lending; from providing computer repair services to packing backpacks full of food for needy elementary school students to take home on weekends, our DC students are gaining the tools to become entrepreneurial life-long learners, while also helping to address important local, regional, national, and international issues. In fact, Defiance College was recently named one of the top 20 schools in the country in terms of community service and engagement. DC students also get unique opportunities to travel both domestically and internationally. Under our DC Global Program, we actually guarantee an international opportunity in the junior or senior year to students in good standing who successfully complete our full four-year program. Over the past two years, DC students have traveled to Cambodia, Belize, Tanzania, Ghana, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, London, Paris, Vienna, Prague, Hungary, Slovakia, and more. Similarly, on a domestic level, DC students have traveled to New York City, Washington, D.C., Portland (OR), Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Kansas City, Des Moines, Denver, Selma, Memphis, Chicago, Nashville, Florida, South Carolina, New Mexico, and elsewhere. We are very proud of the opportunities we give our students to open their eyes, raise their sights, open their minds, and, in many cases, open their hearts as well. I hope you notice some of the recent improvements to our athletic facilities. Our George M. Smart Athletic Center (“the George”) began operation in February 2012, and we are thrilled with the opportunities our students have to use this 84,000 square foot facility, with its 200-meter indoor track, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, batting cages, fitness center, weight room, and much more. The new turf on our football/lacrosse field was installed in December, 2012, and we also recently renovated our outdoor E. Stevens Dix Tennis Courts. The new bleachers and improved flooring in our Weaner Center has also enhanced the experience for our fans, and more improvements are underway across campus this year as well. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers, and staff for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go above and beyond on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D’ all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable faculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are so proud to host. Defiance Athletics Philosophy The Defiance College intercollegiate athletic program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletic program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletic program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. Media Services General Information The 2013 edition of the Defiance College Volleyball Media Guide was written, edited and published by the DC Sports Information Office for use by the news media. Weekly Media Services The Sports Information Office produces a weekly release featuring match notes, updated statistics and other pertinent information on the Yellow Jackets volleyball team. To access this release, please log on to www.DefianceAthletics.com and click on the link to Volleyball. Each weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s release will be located on the right side of the web page. Press Credentials Requests for credentials for working press, photographers, television and radio should be made to Benjamin Dishong, Sports Information Director. Credentials should be requested at least seven days in advance of the game. No credentials will be mailed. If there is a special circumstance, please contact the Sports Information Office.

Gameday Services Members of the working media will be provided the following at the Karl H. Weaner Center: game notes package, game program, complete statistics and the opportunity to interview both coaches at the conclusion of the game. The final stat pack will be available 20 minutes after the game. Radio and Television Radio stations planning to originate a broadcast(s) from the Karl H. Weaner Center should contact the Sports Information Director at least one week prior to the planned broadcast. Courtesy lines are provided for the official station of the opposing school. Player Interviews Media members must adhere to the following guidelines regarding Defiance College player interviews: (1) All player interviews must be coordinated through the Sports Information Office; (2) Players are available for interviews, either at the Sports Information Office or via telephone prior to practice (generally 1:30-4:00 p.m.) and following the completion of practice; (3) Please give at least 24 hours notice; (4) No interviews will be allowed prior to kickoff on gameday. INTERNET ACCESS The Defiance College Athletics complex offers wireless internet throught the area of all facilities, including the Karl H. Weaner Center. Defiance College Yellow Jackets DC VOLLEYBALL 2013 THIS IS DEFIANCE COLLEGE For the past four years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College was also selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its Community Engagement Classification. The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2012-2013 year in Belize and Cambodia, and will travel to Tanzania during the 2013-14 academic year. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness, with the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum, and Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization. Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity. Defiance College Yellow Jackets DC VOLLEYBALL 2013 ATHLETICS FACILITES Defiance College boasts some of the premier facilities within the region for Division III. The Yellow Jackets play in front of loyal DC fans at Justin F. Coressel Stadium (Football & Lacrosse), Winsper-Knobel Field (Soccer), Craig A. Rutter Field (Baseball), Sal Hench Field (Softball), and inside the Karl H. Weaner Center (Volleyball and Basketball) and George M. Smart Center (Track & Field and Tennis). A full athletic training room is available inside Coressel Stadium, the George, and the Weaner Center. Also located within the complex are teammeeting facilities, perfect for reviewing game film with full-color projectors. DC also recently opened an 84,000 square-foot field house in February of 2012. The multi-purpose floor provides additional year-round training areas for all 22 varsity athletic programs at Defiance College. The George also boasts a full athletic training room, expanded fitness and free-weight areas and two full-length batting cages. All of these facilities are available for use by Defiance College Yellow Jacket student-athletes.

Defiance College Yellow Jackets DC VOLLEYBALL 2013 ATHLETIC TRAINING STAFF Defiance College Sports Medicine features some of the finest facilities in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and NCAA Division III. After recent renovations were completed to the athletic facilities on the campus of Defiance College, Yellow Jackets student-athletes now have access to one of the most comprehensive departments in the region. Boasting three separate locations within the Defiance Athletics sports complex, the Athletic Training team makes sure the student-athletes here at Defiance College receive the best treatment possible. The DC Athletic Training main office is located on the south side of the Karl H. Weaner Community Center. The staff also works out of athletic training rooms located within Justin F. Coressel Stadium, as well as the Duane C. Hocking Athletic Training room within the new George M. Smart Athletic Center. Under the direction of head athletic trainer Kevin Tong, Associate Athletic Trainer Kathleen Westfall and Assistant Athletic Trainer Andrew Bacon, Defiance College Athletic Training works tirelessly to make sure our student-athletes receive the highest level of care possible. Defiance College also features the Athletic Training undergraduate program that enhances the services provided to the athletic teams. The staff also features a comprehensive medical team that features six physicians in a variety of medical specialties.

DEFIANCE COLLEGE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. Defiance College Yellow Jackets DC VOLLEYBALL 2013 SEASON OUTLOOK Entering the second year of head coach Brie Brenner’s tenure with the Purple and Gold, the Defiance College volleyball team is poised for a stellar season. After finishing third in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in 2012, DC has high expectations and hopes of a shot at the conference crown this season. The Yellow Jackets return five-of-six starters from a 2012 team that notched the most wins since 2009 at 18-13. The squad was also successful in conference play, as it put together a third-place record of 6-3, the best mark since 2008. DC is laden with a strong upperclassmen presence, as it brings back three seniors and three juniors, who totaled 149 matches started last season. With the veteran leadership and experience returning, the Jackets look to get off to a hot start in 2013 and ride that momentum to an HCAC title.

Setters Junior Alicia Kalik is entering her third stint as the go-to setter for the Purple and Gold. Over her first two campaigns, the South Lyon, Michigan native has racked up 1,737 assists, including 961 in 2012. The setter’s total was the third-most assists in the conference, but she finished with the second-highest assistper-set average at 9.33. Kalik was an All-HCAC selection for her performance on the court. However, Kalik did not just dish out assists. The junior contributed in all facets of the game, as she added 76 kills, 28 aces, 259 digs and 50 total blocks that were all amongst the topfive marks on the team. The South Lyon High product was also efficient in her attacks, as she led Defiance with a .260 attack percentage.

If Kalik continues her extraordinary play at setter over her final two seasons, she will most certainly shatter the current DC assists and assists per set records held by Megan Thigpen and maybe even notch a couple of marks in the HCAC record book.

Liberos/Defensive Specialists With 2012 libero Lindsay McDaniel graduating, the Yellow Jackets will feature a group of back-row defensive specialists that all look to contribute time at the libero and defensive specialist positions.

Senior Lexy Pierce will be the main offensive and defensive force at the center of the net, as she enters her third year at middle blocker for the Yellow Jackets. The All-HCAC standout led DC with 358 kills last season on a .253 attacking percentage. Pierce is the top returning Jacket for total blocks, as the senior totaled 93, an average of 0.85 per set. The 6-1 Pierce has now totaled 183 in her first two campaigns with DC.

Seidenstricker shared a lot of her time between outside hitter and defensive specialist in 2012, but will focus on the back row this season, likely causing a spike in her digs. Regardless of which player starts at libero, both will be counted on to anchor the backcourt and post high passing percentages to turn the defense to offense for the Yellow Jacket attack.

PIERCE Joining Pierce on the front line is freshman Kelsey Tietje, who comes in with high expectations, literally. The 6-3 Tietje now becomes the tallest member on the team and brings in the height presence that Defiance has lacked over the last few seasons. The Deshler, Ohio native earned First-Team Northwest Ohio Athletic League and District 7 during her senior season.

Outside Hitters

Freshmen defensive specialists Dia Jackson, Makayla Dennis and Addison Forche’ join the Purple and Gold as well and will look to make their mark in the back row with solid defensive play.

LUDeman For Anderson, the former transfer hopes to see a boost in her numbers as she settles into the second year under head coach Brie Brenner’s offensive system.

Senior Christa Seidenstricker and sophomore Rebecca Kain figure to be the main contributor’s in the back row, as they racked up the second (275) and third-most (262) digs last season, respectively.

Junior Caroline Hesterman will also be in the mix for a lot of time at the defensive specialist position. The Fort Wayne, Ind. native finished fourth on the 2012 team in digs.

Kalik

Middle Blockers

On the outside of the Purple and Gold attack will be the veteran combo of senior Chelsea Ludeman and junior Bree Anderson. In 2012, Ludeman turned in 331 kills for second on the squad, while Anderson notched third most at 271. Combined, with Pierce’s numbers, the front-line trio accounted for nearly 75 percent of DC’s kills. With a lot of attention being focused on Pierce and Tietje in the middle, Ludeman should be prime for her best season yet as a Yellow Jacket. The 2012 All-HCAC selection has a strong chance to leave her mark in the Defiance record books for both kills in a season and kills over a career.

Freshman Hope Neargarder, Ari Mahaffey and Shy Garmon are also set to see time at the outside hitter positions during the 2013 campaign. The trio will add some needed depth to the position that should allow for more rest breaks to starters Anderson and Ludeman.

Head Coach • Second Season • University of Washington, 2006 419-783-2326• BBRENNER@DEFIANCE.EDU In her first season at the helm of the Purple and Gold volleyball program, Brie Brenner put together a fantastic campaign with the Yellow Jackets. The Defiance, Ohio native returns in 2013 for her second season in charge of the Purple and Gold. The team compiled an 18-13 record in 2012, best since 2009, and also earned a 6-3 mark in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action, the top mark for DC since 2008. The squads play ranked fourth in the conference standings and earned a birth to the HCAC Tournament, where it advanced to the second round. Brenner’s efforts on the season netted her HCAC Coach of the Year honors. With the award, Brenner became the fifteenth coach in Defiance College history to have been honored as the HCAC Coach of the Year and the first since the 2007-08 athletic year. The award marked the third time a DC volleyball coach has received the honor. Brenner took over as the head volleyball coach at Defiance College on January 17 2012, bringing strong local ties and a rich volleyball pedigree with her to DC. Brenner was a two-time Western Buckeye League Player of the Year, while also earning First-Team All-Ohio honors in 2001 for Defiance High School. After concluding a standout prep career, Brenner began a collegiate career at Ohio State University and then transferred to the University of Washington for her final three seasons. During her time with the Huskies, Brenner became a two-time All-PAC-10 performer and led Washington to a pair of PAC-10 Championships. The success continued on the national stage, where Brenner and UW advanced to the NCAA Division I Final Four in 2004 and 2005 and claimed the NCAA Division I National Championship in 2005. Brenner went on to play two years of professional volleyball in Puerto Rico and was voted into the athletic Hall of Fame at the University of Washington, as well as Defiance High School in 2010. Along with her extensive success on the volleyball court at the collegiate and professional ranks, Brenner also boasts eight years of coaching experience at various club and prep levels, which includes stints on staff with Defiance High and multiple club programs. Brenner began her coaching career as an assistant for the Cascade Volleyball Club in 2004 and also worked the UW summer volleyball camps from 2004 through 2006, before returning to northwest Ohio. Since that time, Brenner spent six years as the director of the Hagerty Volleyball Camp that hosted summer camps at several local high schools, including Defiance, Ayersville and Hicksville. She also recently started up the Defiance Volleyball Club that ranges from 10U to 18U competition. Brenner also served as the head coach of the Toledo Volleyball Club from 2008 through 2011, leading the team to three-straight appearances at the United States of America Volleyball Nationals and working as the club’s performance trainer during each of those final three campaigns.

Assistant Coach • First Season • Defiance College, 2012 419-785-2863 • JTIETJE@DEFIANCE.EDU Jessica Tietje, who came on as an assistant coach this spring, is in her first season as part of the Defiance College staff for the volleyball program. Tiejte returns to DC one year removed from finishing an impressive playing career with the Yellow Jackets. Tietje graduated from Defiance College in May of 2012 with a degree in wellness and corporate fitness, while maintaining a grade point average of 3.73. Tietje excelled on the court as well as in the classroom during her four-year career. The Jackets qualified for the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament three of the four seasons that the Deshler, Ohio native was on the team. During her senior season, Tietje was second on the team in kills and third in aces. The Patrick Henry product received a number of awards over her college career at Defiance. Tiejte was named the Outstanding Senior in Wellness and Corporate Fitness in 2012 and earned Academic All-Conference honors for three seasons from 2009 through 2011. Along with coaching, Tietje will work towards a master’s degree in business from Defiance College.

Head Coach Brie Brenner and the DC Volleyball program have made it a point of pride on doing their part in the community and spreading the game of volleyball to the youth of Northwest Ohio. The team has hosted camps at the George M. Smart Athletic Center, along with making trips to local middle and high schools in the surrounding areas. Their success has been shown in the hundreds of young female athletes that they have worked with.
