Boating area Friesland

FRIESLAND Beautiful boating region Friesland is a beautiful region of Holland that offers an enchanting experience for boaters of all abilities. Very easy to reach by a number of different forms of transport, once afloat you will marvel at the beauty of the natural landscape, the charm of the villages, towns and cities and the endless vistas of magnificent and ever changing skies. One of the most striking features of boating in Friesland for the foreign boater is the joy of finding an almost complete absence of locks! There are a few but they are very rare and more often than not left open! When planning your route you will often find a number of different waterways that will take you to your chosen destination, and occasionally you will have the fun of stopping for a bridge to lift or swing (including some where the bridge operator will offer you “a clog on a fishing line in which to place your toll fee - usually a few euros)! The villages, towns and cities of Friesland offer a wealth of interesting architecture and history along with striking churches whose towers and spires can dominate the scenery for miles around. With charming paved streets and alleyways, often hundreds of years old, there is never a shortage of something to see or experience, and equally important are the excellent restaurants to be found. Whilst the most popular destinations can be very busy in the peak months of July and August, the facilities offered are generally first class. If you prefer to experience nature at first hand there are some spectacular nature reserves where you can moor on an island, light a barbecue, and look at the stars long into the night. All in all, The Frisian Lakes are a boaters paradise, and if you fancy travelling a bit further there are delights to be found in Amsterdam to the west and Gronigen and Germany to the east.

LEEUWARDEN Cultural capital of 2018

Leeuwarden is the centre of Friesland and will be the European Capital of Culture in 2018. In that year, the Frisian people want to show how they live, their history and which role the nature plays. The Frisian landscape and its connection to the history and people is also in the central point. Different activities will not only take place in Leeuwarden but also in whole Friesland. With this, the UNESCO world heritage Wadden sea area and the Frisian eleven cities will receive the corresponding attention. The eleven Frisian cities will be symbolistic connected by fountains specialised build for each city, which are designed by national and international artists. On the following pages we introduce four cultural highlights in our cultural capital Leeuwarden.

4 Cultural highlights of Leeuwarden

1. Mata Hari

Prinsentuin Leeuwarden

2. Fries Museum

Mata Hari Margaretha Zelle was born in Leeuwarden. She captivated the audience with her exotic dances as Mata Hari. During the first world war she was suspected to be a spy due to her many affairs with men in uniform and travels throughout Europe. From 14th October till 2nd April 2018 an exhibition takes place in the Frisian Museum which displays items of her life.

Fries Museum The Frisian Museum is the main museum of the Province Friesland. The museum does not only show everything about the eleven cities, the culture, the landscape and the battle against the water. It is also a meeting place where you can enjoy a delicious cup of coffee, buy an original souvenir or watch a movie in the evening. Opening hours: Tuesday-Sunday.

Oldehove The Oldehove does not have a specific function, however it is an important symbol for the city. In 1529, they started to build the tower but the tower started to lean and hence so they could not go on with building the adjoined church. In 1533 the construction of the tower had to be stopped at the height of 120 meters. Opening hours: 1-5 PM.

Stadhouderlijk Hof The Regents Palace is located directly in the city centre. The former palace is nowadays a hotel and over the years it was used for different purposes. In the earlier centuries the Frisian governors lived in the palace. Then it became the royal palace and eventually the residence of the kings commissar.

Giethoorn

Weerribben - Western Europa largest swamp area National park De Weerribben looks pristine, but the whole nature is created through humans. The peat area that has been formed the last thousand years was almost completely digged out in the past 300 years. The peat was pulled out of draw holes (de Weeren) and was laid to dry on the long narrow barkers (de Ribben). This gave the opportunity for peat workers to create a landscape of narrow strips of land and water. Today this pattern is still recognizable in the landscape. Through peat digging this landscape has changed into the largest swamp area of Western Europe. The boat is the excellent vehicle to discover this unique national park. Via it Tjeukemeer you can drive to Ossenzijl, where you’ll enter this unique landscape. Here you find rare animals like the otter and the black stern. It’s possible to spot these birds and animals from the different observation sites. All the reed fields and small canals lead to the main canal the Kalenberggracht. Places to visit are Giethoorn, Muggenbeet, Kalenberg, Zwartsluis and Vollenhove. Tip: Rent a canoe at Yachtcharter De Drait and discover the beautiful hayfields or the mysterious swamp forest.

For many tourists the labyrinth of canals and its midpoint Giethoorn feels like a real attraction park, but this ‘Dutch Venice’ is well-known for its many bridges, small water canals and punter boats (a small open boat which is special developed for peat transport). Giethoorn is one of the two Dutch places which is mentioned on the world edition of Monopoly. The town is elongated and the main canal is its midpoint. Through the peat harvesting different lakes arise and for peat transporting land workers have digged different canals. A lot of houses and farms are situated on little islands and connected through small bridges. There is one foot/cycle path to discover Giethoorn. Through its location on the edge of the national park, Giethoorn is also known for its many water sport activities. So it is possible to rent a boat in the town middle and discover the unique small canals in the neighbourhood. For a day trip Giethoorn offers many different possibilities, which can be dscovered by foot, bike or canoe. The town centre has a lot of shops, museums and galleries where you will find a lot of special goods.

in order to drive on our boats. In the Netherlands it is only necessary to have a licence for boats which are bigger than 15 meters and can go faster than 20 km/h.

For an unexperienced skipper, it is recommendable to take the routes over the Frisian lakes along the villages Eernewoude, Grou, Akkrum and Terhorne. Before departure everyone will get an instruction about routes, navigation, buoyage and ship knots. These instructions are customized to the guest’s experience. For the experienced skipper we recommend tours over the IJsselmeer. Knowledge and experience with tides and navigation are required. This has to be identified with a boat licence. Twice a year we organise a skipper training for unexperienced and experienced skippers. This training costs € 75,- for one day training inclusive lunch. For a trip with the boat there is also the possibility to book a shorter drive lesson for € 45 per hour. During such a training we will explain you how to moor a boat and how to leave a berth, the different ship knots and the meaning of the buoyage. Furthermore you will get more information about navigation, the handling of the bow and /or stern thruster and further practical tips.

Experience the unique atmosphere The

Netherlands is famous for its beautiful canals. These small canals in the town and city centres have a rich history. In the past they were not only dug to defend the city but also as a protection against drying-out. The long and beautiful canal district in Amsterdam is nationally and internationally well known. Due to the constant growth of the city, each time a new canal ring arose. These canal rings were afterwards used for transportation of goods. Later, warehouses and apartment buildings were built in order to store the goods. Nowadays, tourists are driving over the Amsterdam canals in order to admire splendid buildings and special sites such as the ‘Magere Brug’ and the ‘Gouden Bocht’. Not only Amsterdam but also Friesland has many villages and cities with beautiful canals and a rich water background. In Leeuwarden you can find one of the most beautiful canals rings in the Netherlands which you can best explore from a flat boat. The canals from Sneek, IJlst, Hindeloopen and Sloten are suitable for walk, boat and bike tours. Along the berths you can gaze over the special buildings or just enjoy the unique atmosphere on one of the terraces at the water. In order to keep the traffic on the water safe, various rules were made for the main waterways. Always drive on the bow side (right) and within the waterway. Drive quickly through bridges and watergates. Think about the speed due to the wave and suction that can be caused through the ship. Try to avoid the blind spot of other boats and do not cross the way of approaching boats. Furthermore, do not only pay attention to the traffic in front of you but also look back on a regular basis.

Aqueducts and bridges Special constructions

Fleet Friesland

COMFORT CRUISERS

Friesland has many constructions which are connected with the water. For example some bridges and aqueducts can already be seen as a work of art. In order to enable a smooth street traffic, bridges were replaced with aqueducts. In the roman age, people used the aqueducts to transport drinking water to the cities. Many new aqueducts were built in Friesland in the past few years. The most recent aqueducts were designed as architectural constructions. Nevertheless, the bridges identify the water sport province. Here the car traffic has to wait for the passing of the boats. The bridges in Friesland have long opening hours. Even though at most bridges you do not need to pay money anymore in order to pass through, some bridges such as in Akkrum, Warten and Watergates still ask for 2,00 â‚Ź. A fishing pole attached with a typical Dutch wooden shoe (Klomp) is still being used to collect the money.

Modern capital with an extensive history

Berlin, a city with countless sights, was founded in 1237 on a moorland at shallows in the river ‘Spree’. Due

to the location at numerous roads and rivers, many markets and trading facilities were established for the city. In order to spread the trade, more roads where created. While building the roads, attention was paid to the location of adjacent dunes. The city hall, the Nikolaichurch and the Marienchurch were built on the biggest dune. In 1307, Cologne and Berlin decided to join the Hanseatic League. A lot of city towers were built in order to protect the cities. In the following years devastations took place due to fires and therefore they stared building stone houses. During the Thirty Years’ War in the 17th century, a city wall with a lot of fortress buildings was constructed. In addition, the surrounding moor areas where drained for further cultivation. In 1961, after the Second World War, Berlin was spilt into East- and West-Berlin. The east of Berlin was under Russian influence and the western part under the influence of the West. Even after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the influence in the various residential areas is still visible. After the absence of Russian interference, Berlin developed into a modern city with attractive living and working opportunities. Berlin has 3,5 million residents at the moment. This makes Berlin not only an industrial and commercial but also a lively city with a lot of culture and interesting sights

Fernsehturm

The 368 meter tall tower is an important landmark of Berlin. It was built between 1965 and 1969 and is situated in East-Berlin. You can visit the tower daily and with good weather conditions you can enjoy a 40 kilometre long view of Berlin and the surroundings. Aditionally, there is also a restaurant on 203 meter height. There you can enjoy a delicious meal next to the spectacle view.

Reichstag

This unique sight is also very important within the German politic. It is the domicile of the German parliament and every 5 years the elections are taking place here. Due to the outstanding architecture, the large glass dome with a fantastic view, it is one of the most beautiful sights of Berlin. Do not forget to register yourself on the website of the Reichstag before you visit.

Brandenburger Tor

The last intact city gate of Berlin is located on the ‘Pariser Platz’ between the boulevards ‘Unter den Linden’ and the city park ‘Tiergarten’. In the past the gate was used as a city gate. Back then people needed to pay customs in order to enter the city. During the split of Berlin, one could not visit the Brandenburger Tor due to the Berlin Wall. Now the Brandenburger Tor is the symbol of the reunited Berlin.

Checkpoint Charlie

The former border crossing in the Friedrichstraße was for foreigners the only possibility to travel between West- and EastBerlin. After the fall of the wall, the original item was demolished and later on a replica was build. Now the Checkpoint Charlie is a famous tourist sight and you have the possibility to take a picture together with a frontier-guard.

The sailing area Berlin-Brandenburg is a hospitable watersport area with many berthing facilities. There are many associations with their own marina and harbour building. Most of the ports offer berths for guests and have a cafe or snack bar. Due to the increasing popularity of watersports, a lot of marinas have been expanded and new public berths have been built in almost every village and city. The ‘Gelbe Welle’ (yellow wave) is a symbol that represents the water sport and it stands for hospitality, friendliness and environment. Many marinas, associations and municipalities are part of this. In Brandenburg - Berlin you can find more than 240 berths with the ‘Gelbe Welle’ symbol. There are many quiet berths at the Havel. Relax, swim or just enjoy the beautiful view with a nice snack on board.

License in Germany Routes and possibilities without license

Normally

a boat licence is required on every waterway on Germany. However, there are also some regions where this boat licence is not needed and where you can also drive a boat with a Charterschein. This is intended for water sports enthusiasts who would like to rent a boat for a limited time and do not have a boat license.

Our licence free area is along the river Havel which is between Brandenburg and Havelberg. The total tour is ca. 200 km which can be done within 1 week.

97

Bravoure 40/34

The Charterschein is an advanced instruction for the boat and water sport in general. The instruction includes a theoretical (driving and behavioural rules) as well as a practical part (mooring, departing of the boat, technique, how to tie a knot etc.). The Charterschein is valid for the charter period.

98

The DrachsterSloep is a robust sloop and it has a remarkable appearance on the water. The

design is based on old rescue sloops of the Dutch merchant shipping. The driving characteristics, comfort and the classic lines are standing out. A long keel, high freeboard, elevated bow and stern, a full mirror and the extraordinary seating comfort are features which make the DrachsterSloep different than other sloops. These features are not only improving the appearance of the boat but also the driving characteristics.

However, in Germany you can also enjoy international dishes such as Italian delicacies, Japanese or Indian specialties. Along the river Havel you can find many berths and different restaurants. This opportunity is very inviting to have a nice dinner out in one of the restaurants and then to sleep later in your boat at the landing stage. In Brandenburg an der Havel you can for example have a nice dinner at a former shipyard or at Gasthof am See which is located along the Malge and here you can also enjoy a beautiful view above the lake. The ‘Fliegende Holländer’ in Potsdam is an insider tip. Here you can rest after a long day of sightseeing.
