COMPANY PROFILE ENGLISH

This book celebrates the first 25 years of activity of DECOR. In particular, it is a tribute to its founder Marco Martena, who founded a small company for the processing of local stone in 1990, full of 40 years of professional experience in architectural restoration. His work was driven by a strong passion and great resourcefulness. Quickly he understood that his production could go beyond local and national boundaries, so he bought his first CNC machine and decided to participate in some important stone exhibitions, both in Italy and abroad. The first very important order came from the Middle East: the furnishings for a member of the Royal Family of Saudi Arabia, followed by the construction of arches and minarets of two mosques in Turkmenistan. It was a period of great enthusiasm and great plans for the future; in a few years the small workshop developed into a dynamic company well-known and appreciated for its professionalism and reliability. When Mr Marco died, in 1999, he passed the baton to his three children, Gabriella, Roberta and Valerio, who run the family business personally with different roles. Today the company has found dedication and enthusiasm: they look towards new and even more ambitious aims with pride and determination.

Questo libro nasce dalla volontà di celebrare i primi 25 anni di attività di DECOR. In particolare, è un omaggio al suo fondatore Marco Martena, che dopo 40 anni di esperienza maturati nel settore del restauro architettonico, nel 1990 fonda una piccola azienda per la lavorazione della pietra leccese, ad uso quasi esclusivo dei suoi cantieri di ristrutturazione. Ma il suo lavoro è guidato da una forte passione e una grande intraprendenza. In breve tempo comprende che la sua produzione può andare oltre i confini locali e nazionali, così acquista la prima macchina a controllo numerico e soprattutto decide di partecipare ad importanti fiere del settore lapideo, sia in Italia che all’estero. La prima importante commessa viene dal Medio Oriente: gli arredi per un membro della Famiglia Reale dell’Arabia Saudita, cui seguono, la realizzazione di arcate e minareti in due Moschee in Turkmenistan. E’ un periodo di grande fermento e grandi progetti per il futuro e in pochi anni il piccolo laboratorio artigianale si trasforma in un’azienda dinamica che mira a distinguersi nel settore per serietà e affidabilità. Nel 1999 il Sig. Marco viene a mancare dopo una breve malattia, passando così il testimone ai suoi tre figli, Gabriella, Roberta e Valerio, che gestiscono l’azienda di famiglia personalmente con ruoli differenti. Oggi l’azienda ha ritrovato impegno ed entusiasmo: si guarda verso nuovi ed ambiziosi traguardi con orgoglio e determinazione. The company incessantly strives to privilege materials of local origin, especially “Pietra leccese” , a golden calcareous limestone, which characterizes Lecce’s history and its famous Baroque architecture. The mission of the company is to interpret and introduce in a contemporary lifestyle the same stone that, for its physical and aesthetic characteristics, was utilized since ancient times in the great architectural masterpieces of our art history. DECOR STONE design and construction of decorative works for residential, commercial, religious buildings and private villas. Architecture : floor, paving, cladding, stairs, balustrades, portals, frames, doors and windows surrounds, architectural details. Interior design : furniture, fireplaces, columns, decorative stone pieces. Landscape design : fountains, statues, benches, vases . The company carries out high tech processing based on numeric-control machines, which cut and shape materials with high precision and in short time. However, the most modern technologies are combined with the irreplaceable manual skills of “stone-cutters” and “craftsmen” who are able to create unique and valuable works of art.

DECOR STONE ITALIANO È nata per garantire continuità e riconoscimento alla tradizione. Impegno costante dell’azienda è quello di privilegiare materiali di provenienza locale, specialmente la “Pietra Leccese” una roccia calcarea di colore giallo paglierino che ha legato il suo nome alla storia di Lecce e alla sua famosa architettura Barocca. La missione dell’azienda consiste nell’interpretare e introdurre nel vivere contemporaneo quella stessa pietra che, per le sue caratteristiche fisiche ed estetiche, è stata utilizzata fin dall’antichità classica, nei capolavori architettonici della nostra storia dell’arte. DECOR PIETRE si occupa della progettazione e costruzione di opere edili residenziali, commerciali, religiose e ville private. Architettura : pavimenti, rivestimenti, scale, balaustre, portali, cornici, contorni per porte e finestre, elementi architettonici in genere. Interior design : componenti d’arredo, camini, colonne, elementi decorativi. Progettazione di giardini e paesaggi : fontane, statue, panchine, vasi. L’azienda sfrutta le più moderne tecnologie industriali in tutti i processi lavorativi; macchine a controllo numerico, infatti, permettono di tagliare e sagomare i materiali con precisione e in tempi brevissimi. L’impiego dei più moderni macchinari, tuttavia, è costantemente affiancato dalle insostituibili capacità manuali di “scalpellini” e “finitori” che consentono di ottenere complesse e pregiate lavorazioni.

DECOR DESIGN ENGLISH After years of experience acquired through stone processing, in the last decade the company was inspired by the need to renew its traditional image through a close look at modern trends. The partnership with young and creative designers has revealed the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s aspiration to welcome the challenge of innovation and design, experimenting new materials and their application. It was the start of a new philosophy: creating linear and sober lines item, which combine stone tradition and avant-garde design, great aesthetics and functionality. The excellence of achieved results are testified by their welcome at important exhibitions as well as international magazines.

ITALIANO Dopo anni di esperienza maturati nel settore della lavorazione della pietra, nel 2003 l’azienda sente la necessità di rinnovare la sua immagine tradizionale attraverso un’opera di attualizzazione delle tendenze in chiave moderna. Nell’ultimo decennio l’incontro e la collaborazione con alcuni architetti e designers hanno segnato un nuovo percorso aziendale: avvicinare una realtà fatta di antichi mestieri alla creatività di giovani designers. È stato l’inizio di una nuova filosofia: creare oggetti d’arte dalle linee sobrie e minimaliste, dove la tradizione della pietra incontra il design d’avanguardia e l’estetica ben si combina con la funzionalità. L’eccellenza dei risultati è testimoniata dagli apprezzamenti ricevuti in importanti fiere e dalla pubblicazione su affermate riviste del settore.

This project comes from client’s desire to create a prestigious residence, where stone finds its original static function, even more than a decorative one, as the main material of local building tradition. Following the current housing choices, the villa, which is entirely built of stone blocks, fully meets the needs of bio-compatibility and environmental sustainability. However, the strength of the structure is made aesthetically “light” by the dramatic effect of the architectural decorations: doors and windows surrounds, string courses, columns, balustrades, bas-reliefs, masks... which are part of the local baroque tradition. 1999

Il progetto nasce dalla volontà della committenza di realizzare una residenza di prestigio, dove la pietra ritrovasse la sua originaria funzione statica, come materiale principale della tradizione costruttiva locale, prima ancora che decorativa. Da questo punto di vista, precursore anche delle attuali scelte abitative, la struttura, costruita appunto interamente con conci in pietra, risulta rispondere appieno ai principi di biocompatibilità ambientale e sostenibilità. Tuttavia, la solidità della struttura è resa esteticamente “leggera” dall’effetto scenografico delle decorazioni architettoniche: cornici di porte e finestre, marcapiani, colonne, balaustre, bassorilievi, mascheroni... che fanno parte della tradizione barocca locale. 1999

The property, subject of the intervention of restoration, is an integral part of the building complex known as “Convitto Palmieri”. It is composed of a large hall, now hosting the Provincial Library, entry in Via Caracciolo. The renovation and restoration project is for a portion of the building with a vaulted ceiling only, supported by walls made of dry wall, externally covered with blocks of local stone. In particular, in the façade, portions of stone wall, pilasters, cornices and other architectural elements, have been cleaned and replaced, where necessary. 2005

BIBLIOTECA PROVINCIALE ITALIANO

L’immobile oggetto dell’intervento è parte integrante del complesso architettonico noto come “Convitto Palmieri”. E’ costituito principalmente da una grande aula (già destinata a Biblioteca Provinciale) con accesso da via Caracciolo. I lavori di ristrutturazione e restauro hanno interessato una porzione di fabbricato con copertura a botte unica, sorretta da pareti realizzate con muratura a secco, rivestito esternamente con conci in pietra leccese a vista. In particolare, nella facciata sono stati ripuliti e sostituiti, là dove necessario, porzioni di muratura, lesene, cornicioni ed altri elementi architettonici. 2005

The restoration and renovation project transformed the prestigious building into one of the most luxurious hotels in Lecce. The conservative restoration involved all structural and artistic stone elements of the Liberty-style façade; stone walls and cornices were cleaned and replaced where necessary while maintaining a homogenous appearance throughout. 2007

L’intervento di ristrutturazione, restauro e risanamento conservativo ha consentito di trasformare un prestigioso palazzo in uno dei più lussuosi hotel di Lecce. Il prospetto principale, di epoca ottocentesca, è stato sottoposto ad un trattamento di pulitura ed integrazione di conci in pietra leccese a faccia vista, che costituiscono il paramento murario. Anche le decorazioni in pietra leccese e in stile liberty, lesene, cornici e marcapiani, sono stati sottoposti ad un accurato intervento di risanamento e ripristino. 2007

The project included the restoration and conservation of the façade of an old mansion. The stone walls and the elegant decorations in Baroque style were restored to their former beauty through a high level of craftsmanship. 2006

The estate dates back to the period of Christian persecution; a group of byzantine monks found here a pleasant place to live and pray (hence the name of the castle). Today it is a prestigious location for events and ceremonies. The renovation and restoration involved the banister of the staircase inside the cloister, with the replacement of the columns according to their original design, and the flooring of the halls with slabs of local antiqued stone. 2011

La tenuta risale al periodo della persecuzione cristiana; in questo luogo ameno un gruppo di monaci bizantini trovò un posto dove vivere e pregare (da qui il nome del castello). Oggi è una location di prestigio per eventi e cerimonie. L’intervento di ristrutturazione e restauro ha interessato la balaustra della scalinata interna al chiostro, con la sostituzione delle colonnine secondo il loro disegno originale, e la pavimentazione delle sale interne con lastre in pietra leccese anticata. 2011

Apulia has a great architectural heritage of enormous historical and cultural importance. Today the challenge is to “de-construct” the buildings from by-gone centuries and transform them into useful and efficient spaces for living and working. An example is “Relais Masseria Capasa”, which has been transformed into a luxury location. Settled in the sunny countryside of “Grecìa Salentina” the farmhouse, dating back to 1700, has typical vaulted ceiling. An atmosphere of warm and refined elegance in a charming place, of absolute relax. “The finish of the restoration is based on the assumption that design must be in harmony with the space, dialoguing with tradition and places. La sfida di oggi è “de-costruire” gli edifici dei secoli passati, ovvero ristrutturarli e cambiarne la destinazione d’uso. Ne è esempio l’intervento di trasformazione di “Relais Masseria Capasa”, che ospita oggi una location di lusso. Immersa nella campagna della “Grecìa Salentina” la struttura, che risale al 1700, ha le tipiche volte a stella. Un’atmosfera di accogliente e ricercata eleganza in un luogo suggestivo, di relax assoluto. “La finitura del restauro parte dal presupposto che il design deve armonizzarsi con lo spazio, dialogando con la tradizione e i luoghi. L’uso della Pietra Leccese anche negli arredi, realizzati su disegno, contribuisce a creare un ambiente magico e confortevole, ricco di luce”. 2013

Private area par excellence, today the bath has lost its connotation of room service becoming a relaxing place where we find physical and mental well-being. Comfort and elegance are at the centre of the renovation project of this bathroom into a private residence. “Luxury interiors display a sensitive minimalism, warmed up by a clever use of stone and other natural materials, which contribute to create a cosy and fascinating, almost like artificial universe”. The style is contemporary and the comfort functions are sophisticated: everything is designed to create “a space that was neat and rational, but also a personalized reassuring space to retreat closely into”. 2005

Angolo intimo per eccellenza, il bagno oggi ha perso la sua connotazione di stanza di servizio e si è trasformato in un ambiente dedicato al relax, un luogo dove rigenerarsi e “rappacificarsi” con se stessi. Comfort ed eleganza caratterizzano l’intervento di restauro in questo bagno di una residenza privata. “Un interno di lusso dove il calore della matericità si mescola al rigore del design contemporaneo, contribuendo a creare un’atmosfera intima ed avvolgente, quasi come universi artificiali”. Monia Allegretti is the author of The Spa, the luxury wellness center of Pennyhill Park Hotel, in London, voted the best English hotel in 2001. The building is spread over 45,000 square meters and offers a full spa facility, 8 pools, 21 massage rooms, a Technogym and a VIP area reserved for English National Rugby team. The theme of water is well represented by the pool of 25 x 10 meters, completely covered in marble and granite, with beach effect to the edge. The strong appeal to the Roman Baths is represented by columns of Lecce stone that develop on the perimeter. The decoration of the pool is very simple: a big wave in White Sivec in the middle of the space in blue intense Labrador Gt Pearl and only interrupted by the logo “The Spa” in Azul Cielo. Inside, the big tub is lit up by 102 LED light and outside with optical fibers in the colors of blue, pink and champagne, while the music spreads underwater without any perceivable sound outside. The brightness of granite, marble and natural stone used in the floors create an elegant atmosphere that combines contemporary claims to a refined classical Roman architecture. The 21 massage rooms are on two floors and are divided according to the four elements of air, water, fire and earth that combine different materials and colors (blue, green, red and brown). The Thermal Sequence runs in three different areas, one female, one male and the mixed one, in order to provide total freedom to customers in their time of relaxation. 2003

Il tema dell’acqua è ben rappresentato dalla piscina da 25 x 10 mt, interamente rivestita in marmi e granito, con effetto spiaggia al bordo. Il richiamo forte alle terme romane è rappresentato dalle colonne in pietra leccese che si sviluppano sul perimetro. Il decoro della vasca è molto semplice con la grande onda centrale in Bianco Sivec che si fa spazio sul blue intenso del Labrador Gt Pearl ed interrotta dall’onda bidirezionale del logo The Spa in Azul Cielo. La vasca è illuminata all’interno da 102 led light ed esternamente da fibre ottiche nei colori blue, fucsia e champagne, mentre la musica si diffonde sottacqua senza che sia percepibile all’esterno. La lucentezza dei graniti, dei marmi e delle pietre naturali impiegati nei pavimenti creano una elegante atmosfera che coniuga le istanze contemporanee ad una raffinata classicità romana. The renovation and expansion project concerns the grouping of a large vaulted room in another building on two levels, located in the historic center of Lecce, both portions of a former convent. The project followed two key lines: giving a new layout to the apartment and studying specific functional solutions. The architect has shown a particular sensibility in bringing together the tradition of the historical building and the needs of contemporary culture of living. The new functional layout involves the construction of a mezzanine floor destined to a guest room, and an extension of the living area in which a crystal staircase, leading to the loft, acts as a discrete protagonist. The intervention was treated in full compliance with the existing, supporting the use of traditional materials, choices that led to the enhancement of the typical vaulted ceiling in local stone. Particular attention was given to two ancient frescoes perfectly restored, found during removal of old plaster. 2010

VILLA PRIVATA ITALIANO

L’intervento di ristrutturazione e ampliamento riguarda l’accorpamento di un grande vano voltato ad una unità immobiliare su due livelli, sita nel centro storico di Lecce, entrambi porzioni di un ex convento. Il progetto di ristrutturazione ha seguito due linee cardine: la riqualificazione degli spazi e la necessità di adeguarli funzionalmente e tecnologicamente, coniugando la tradizione dell’edificio storico e le esigenze della cultura contemporanea dell’abitare. Il nuovo assetto funzionale prevede la realizzazione di un piano soppalco destinato a camera degli ospiti, e un ampliamento della zona living in cui fa da discreto protagonista una scala in cristallo che conduce al soppalco. Il lavoro di recupero è stato curato nel pieno rispetto delle preesistenze, affiancando l’utilizzo di materiali tradizionali del luogo, scelte che hanno portato alla valorizzazione delle tipiche volte e pareti in tufo e pietra leccese. Particolare attenzione è stata posta ai due affreschi d’epoca, rinvenuti in fase di rimozione di vecchi intonaci e perfettamente restaurati. 2010

The sacred architecture is a very inspiring issue since it showcases the best building and decorative qualities of stone. There are several examples both in the classical architecture and in the contemporary one. Here we pay specific attention to the “Church of San Bernardino Realino”. In designing this new church, the aim was giving a clear and recognizable morphological value to the whole parish. The focus was on the need to bring out the image of an active community, avoiding that the church - building was submerged in the shadow of the new urban expansion. The result was a building whose image was referring to historical memory of Salento, favouring morphological solutions and the use of local materials such as white plaster and local stone: a clear reference to our South land. 2013

ARCHITETTURA SACRA ITALIANO

L’architettura sacra è sicuramente una tematica molto stimolante poichè mette in mostra le capacità costruttive e le doti decorative della pietra. Vi sono svariati interventi realizzati sia nel mondo classico e sia in quello contemporaneo. Qui si pone particolare attenzione alla “Chiesa di San Bernardino Realino”. Nella progettazione della nuova chiesa, la volontà principale dei progettisti è stata quella di attribuire un valore morfologico chiaro e riconoscibile all’intero complesso parrocchiale, per far emergere all’interno dello skyline urbano l’immagine di una comunità attiva, al fine di evitare che la chiesa-edificio fosse sommersa all’ombra della nuova espansione urbana. Si è cercato di riproporre un edificio la cui immagine facesse riferimento alla memoria storica e tipologica salentina attraverso soluzioni morfologiche e attraverso l’impiego di materiali come l’intonaco bianco e la pietra leccese: un chiaro richiamo alla nostra terra del Sud. 2013

The interiors of show rooms are getting more and more sophisticated and pay a closer attention to detail. The aim of design is taking the customer to a visual experience. In this way the art of hospitality and business are mixed together. In these projects the major element is the stone with its colors, its textures and its finishes. There is a progressive increase in the use of stone as a decorative element and it is certainly due to the intrinsic elegance of the material itself. The stone is a versatile material since it mixes well with other materials, enhancing their elegance. In the interiors the final effect is one of great formal purity. There are several examples but here we only mention the optical store “Visionottica” and the pastry shop “Il Senso del Gusto”.

ATTIVITA’ COMMERCIALI ITALIANO

Gli interni degli spazi commerciali divengono sempre più ricercati e attenti ai particolari. Lo scopo della progettazione è sicuramente guidare il cliente in un’esperienza visiva. Così l’arte dell’accoglienza e del commercio si mescolano. Qui l’elemento primario è la pietra con i sui colori, le sue trame e i suoi tagli. Vediamo un crescendo dell’impiego della pietra come elemento decorativo o di finitura muri, questo è sicuramente dovuto all’eleganza intrinseca del materiale stesso. La pietra è un elemento duttile perché si accosta ad altri materiali esaltandoli. L’effetto scenico finale degli interni è di grande purezza formale. Gli esempi sono innumerevoli, ma citiamo alcuni come l’ottica “Visiottica” e la pasticceria “Il Senso del Gusto”.

Symbol of durability, stone has always been a priviledged material for decorating spaces such as restaurants, locations, hotels, gardens. Certainly its large use is also due to the continuity between the exterior and interior. In fact, the use of such a resistant material makes design more creative and free.

L’ architettura alberghiera è progettata per consentire agli ospiti di immergersi completamente e vivere a pieno il luogo che li ospita. Ed è proprio nell’architettura dell’ospitalità che la pietra trova il suo maggiore impiego. Da sempre la pietra è stata simbolo di durevolezza e per questo prescelta per realizzare spazi come ristoranti, sale ricevimenti, strutture di ospitalità e giardini. Il forte impiego è sicuramente dovuto anche alla continuità fra esterno ed interno. Infatti l’uso di un materiale così resistente rende la progettazione più libera e creativa.
