FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

CONFIDENCE BUILDING

SUMMER LEARNING During the summer months many children are not as engaged in learning and reading activities as they would be while in school. The SPARK program helps children stay on track over the summer and read at or above grade level when the new year begins. Studies show that without access to summer learning activities such as camp, travel, and visits to libraries and museums, students can experience more significant learning loss. The day at SPARK is filled with fun enrichment activities like physical education, music, and arts, as well as a weekly field trip. Healthy breakfast and lunch are also provided.

BECOME A READING BUDDY What can you SPARK this summer? You can help kids in Wabash County stay sharp over the summer! In collaboration with MSD of Wabash County, Wabash City Schools, and Manchester Community Schools, SPARK provides literacy instruction from certified teachers to ensure that students do not experience summer learning loss, but in fact gain reading skills and can begin the next school year right where they need to be. We need volunteer Reading Buddies to read with SPARK kids and provide encouragement.  What is a Reading Buddy? A Reading Buddy is a positive role model who spends time listening to a camper read and reading to a camper. Reading Buddies have the opportunity to model good reading habits and encourage campers. Reading Buddies can volunteer one, two or three hours per week for the six weeks of SPARK or even for just a single day. SPARK will run from June 15-WJuly 23 in Wabash and June 29-August 6 in North Manchester. Reading buddies are needed from 10:15 - 11am Monday through Thursday. To become a Buddy contact Danielle Darnell, Site Director at ddarnell@WabashCountyYMCA.org!

Nothing is more fundamental to this opportunity than consistent access to healthy meals. Our collaboration with the Walmart Foundation and hundreds of other partners helps us serve 5 million healthy meals and snacks paired with enriching activities during the summer months for kids who typically participate in the National School Lunch Program, and13 million throughout the year.

FEEDING THE SPIRIT, MIND AND BODY In addition to receiving nutritious meals and snacks, youth between ages 5-18 are provided recreational and learning activities to keep their bodies and minds active.

It’s no secret that daily exercise leads to good health. But it can be challenging to find an activity that keeps you coming back day after day. We’re learning more about a fun sport that gets people off the couch and outside. It’s the sport with a funny name, it’s called pickleball. As we found out, from the moment you give it a shot, you’ll be hooked. It’s part tennis, part ping-pong, and part badminton. Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America. 2015 marks Pickleball’s 50-year anniversary! Pickleball is a fun game with parts borrowed from tennis, badminton, and ping pong. It’s played on a badminton court with the net lowered to 34 inches. It is played with a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles. It’s easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced competitive game for experienced players. Pickleball is played in the blue gym with the court clearly marked. Call to ahead to reserve court time!

It’s a great game and its popularity is increasing steadily. Come on in and have fun as you learn a new game. We have several members who play each weekday at 11 am and would love to teach you how to play. If you’re not ready to jump in on the court yet, come on in and have a seat on the bleachers and watch! All adults are invited to join in the fun!

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

All kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, under the guidance of adults who care about them and believe in their potential. We see every interaction with young people as an opportunity for learning and development.

Health and well-being are all about balance. That’s why we help people and families build and maintain healthy habits for spirit, mind and body in their everyday lives. By helping kids, adults, families and seniors from all backgrounds improve their health and well-being, we build a stronger community.

With our doors open to all, we work every day to connect people from all backgrounds and support those who need us most. We take on the most urgent needs in our community and inspire a spirit of service in return. Our members, volunteers, supporters and staff demonstrate the power of what we can achieve by giving back together.

GIVE TODAY We have an extraordinary opportunity to ensure a brighter future for Wabash County, but we must take action today, and only your support will make it possible.

MEANINGFUL GIFTS MAKE BIG CHANGES

When you give to the Wabash County YMCA, your gift will help young people achieve their potential, empower people of all ages to lead healthier lives, and strengthen the bonds of community in Wabash County. •Your gift enables us to provide Academic Enrichment programs like SPARK, CareTogether, After School Care, and Day Camp. Last year, you helped 348 children to learn more, do more, and be more. •Our school-based Water Safety Education and Swim Lessons have given 958 children the skills they need to swim safely. •The Wabash County Promise has planted seeds of HOPE in 1,061 children so they can dream for their futures and live those dreams.

Now, when you think of your YMCA you’ll know it’s more than just a gym…it’s a cause. A cause, that, with your generous support, will continue to strengthen the community in which you live.
