DCCA Board Seeks Candidates

Board Candidates Sought

Each year at this time, in accordance with the DeBordieu Colony Community Association Bylaws, the DCCA Board of Directors appoints a Nominating Committee which is charged with reviewing applications for new members to serve on the Board of Directors. The new members will serve a three-year term commencing on May 4, 2019.

Our current board members make their community service look glamorous and exciting, but being a DCCA Board Member takes patience, a lot of reading, and regular monthly meetings that sometimes turn into weekly meetings. Board members also chair and/or serve on one of the community’s committees (Executive, ARB, Long Range Planning, Infrastructure, Community Affairs, Legal & Regulatory, and Grievance).

The committee is currently seeking community members who are interested and able to serve on the Board. Committee members will review candidates over the next month and present their slate of nominees to fill four vacated Board seats during the DCCA March 9 board meeting.

COMMUNITY BOARD BRIEFS

The following are highlights from the DCCA January 21, 2023 Board Meeting:

Reported:

• There are currently 53 new homes under construction, and 33 new homes under ARB review.

• Jordan McCall, of Clemson University Kennedy Waterfowl & Wetlands Conservation Center, discussed her ongoing DeBordieu/Hobcaw Water Bird Study. The presentation is on the community webpage.

• Total Asphalt begins road rejuvenation on March 20. It will take approximately two weeks to complete the project, which is weather dependent. This new green formula is clear and dries faster. Those roads recently paved or scheduled for upcoming paving will not receive the treatment.

Approved:

• The 2023 Nominating Committee to include Tom Moon and Ken Davis serving as the two Board members and Doug Patton, Helen Rose and Emerson Gower as at-large community members.

• Allowing members of management, an Executive Committee member, and the ARB Chair Kenny Michaels to meet with a party currently building in DeBordieu and take any action the Board deems necessary.

Approved Board minutes are available online at www.debordieucolony.org

New road project begins in March

Total Asphalt will be on property in late March to treat community roads in a rejuvenation project similar to the one completed in 2017. Touting a “greener” product that dries in just two hours, the crews will begin by cleaning the roads, applying the product, and directing traffic.

The benefits of using this product are the increased longevity of asphalt. Studies show it is more cost effective to periodically maintain a pavement surface, mitigating many of the environmental distress mechanisms. Preventive maintenance of flexible pavements is important, as weathering and other environmental damage are primary factors leading to premature failure of pavements. Periodic renewing of the surface preserves the pavement structure.

Residents will be updated on the specific location and dates/times as we get closer to the start date. As a reminder, the project is weather dependent so updates will be sent accordingly. Additionally, recently paved roads and those scheduled to be paved this year will not be treated.

DCCA Board Wants to Hear from You; Focus Groups Forming

The DCCA Board has commissioned an owner survey to focus on owner satisfaction, capital planning, and strategic priorities for the community’s future. GGA Partners has been tasked with the development of the DCCA 2023 Resident Survey.

The first step in developing a survey is to listen to residents, and focus groups are the best way to do that. A recent email to owners contained a sign-up link for owners interested in participating. The focus groups will meet March 1 to March 4 from 8 AM to 5 PM in 75-minute intervals at the DCCA Administration Bldg. Each session is limited to eight people. Evening zoom sessions are available on a limited basis. Reservations will be on a space-available basis.

If you missed the email, the link is available at www.debordieucolony.org.

AROUND THE COLONY

Health Symposium Set

S.C.U.T.E.

Our current cool temperatures make it seem premature to be thinking about turtle season but we want to hit the ground running when they warm up! Loggerhead sea turtles are coldblooded reptiles and are spending their winter in the warm waters of the Gulf Stream and down in the Caribbean. They will start following the warming ocean temperatures and head north in April when mating occurs and begin to nest in early May.

Mark your calendar to attend our first-ever Mature Health Symposium. DCCA is partnering with the Tidelands Health to bring you two fascinating speakers on the topics of “Living to Be 100” and “Your Emotional Health and Dealing with Stress.” In addition to the programs you will have the opportunity for personal interaction with experts and medical professionals to discuss maintaining wellness. These stations will cover various topics from physician care (think Cardiac or Orthopedic) to how to prepare a Living Will. The event will be held Monday, April 1 from 2 to 5 pm in the Colony Room. Signature bar and light hors d’oeuvres will be available. Please call to reserve your spot (843) 546-2410.

Volunteers begin walking our 6 miles of beach at sunrise in early May searching for the tracks of loggerheads. They locate egg chambers, relocate nests if necessary and protect the site. New volunteers will train with experienced trainers and will be working to earn their SCDNR certifications.

Being a turtle volunteer is hard work but rewarding and so interesting. If this sounds like a good fit for you, please let us know if you will be joining us on April 16th (betsybrabson@ gmail.com).
