The boys cross country program at Ferndale is reaching new heights. That progress was never more evident than at the Division 2 regional meet Oct. 29 at Metro Beach Metropark. The Eagles placed third and qualified for the state meet (held Saturday at the MIS Speedway in Brooklyn after this newspaper went to press) for just the third time in school history. Detroit Country Day won the regional with

59 points. Bloomfield Hills Lahser (60) placed second and the Eagles grabbed the third and final team-qualifying spot with 98 points. Bloomfield Hills Andover scored 110 points to finish fourth. “It doesn’t happen very often at Ferndale, but lightning struck here for us this year,” head coach Rick Piornack said. “I figured Lahser would win and Country Day was the team we would chase, and if we did that we could be second behind Lahser. The worst-case scenario was that we would be fourth. “But Country Day won and we ended up reach-

ing a happy medium by taking third place,” he said. “I expected to be among the top three so I wasn’t surprised at how we finished.” The young Eagles had just two seniors among their top seven regional runners. Junior Leo Kopack, also a soccer player who transferred into the Ferndale system as a sophomore, paced the Ferndale contingent with a time of 17:17.0 which was good for ninth place overall. Sophomore Mike Murray was among the top 15 regional runners with a 15th-place time of

Raven runners place third at regional meet By Marty Budner Eccentric Staff Writer

Although a relatively young team in terms of varsity experience, Royal Oak’s boys cross country team believed in its collective talents before the season. At a preseason team training camp up north, the Ravens set their goals of challenging for a league championship and advancing to the state finals. They knew what they were talking about. After running to the OAA Blue Division’s undisputed overall championship, Royal Oak showed everyone it was for real by earning a state-qualifying berth at the Division 1 regional meet Oct. 29 in Waterford. Competing on the challenging Hess Hathaway Park course, the Ravens latched on to the third and final team qualifying spot with 90 points. Host Mott won going way with 36 points while Catholic League power Birmingham Brother Rice was second with 87 points. The Ravens had four runners among the top 16 finishers to earn their second trip to the Division 1 state meet in the last three years. Royal Oak failed to

qualify last season after placing 17th at the 2009 state meet. They couldn’t be happier about the return trip to states (scheduled for Nov. 5 in Brooklyn after this paper went to press).

“In the summer, we go for a training camp up north and we sit around the campfire and we talk about individual and team goals,” said Royal Oak’s cohead coach Ryan Piippo on Tuesday afternoon at prac-

tice. “Almost every guy made it their team goal to win the league and to qualify for the state meet. “We just bonded as a team this year. I know the other teams who qualified (for states) were real-

ly happy on Saturday (at the regional), but our guys were just ecstatic. You could just see it in their faces as they collected their medals. Please see RAVENS, B2

Trojans turn their focus to 2012 Clawson gridders reflect on another winning season By Dan O’Meara Eccentric Staff Writer

As time passes, the Clawson Trojans will have a better perspective on the recent football season than they did last week, according to coach Jim Sparks. Just days after a season-ending loss in the

playoffs, the sting of defeat was still fresh, and it was difficult for them to see the big picture. “Like any season when it ends, you’re disappointed, but I’m sure as the days pass and we can reflect on it, we’ll find we had a lot of things we accomplished,” Sparks said.

“The last couple years we lost some key kids and had other kids step up. I’m as proud as I can be of our kids and the seniors in particular. “We were glad to get six wins and compete for a league championship. Getting to play in the playoffs was a great highlight for the kids. Hats off to them. As the days go by, we’ll remember more good things than we do the loss.” Clawson had its sixth

The Michigan Independent Athletic Conference recently announced its All-Conference team and nine players represented either Birmingham Roeper or Southfield Christian high schools. Roeper’s six all-stars included seniors Jordan Veillette and Nathan Flynn, juniors Spenser Solys, David Veillette and Dan Thibadeau, and sophomore Graeme Schulman. Southfield Christian had three all-star representatives, including senior Christian Bryant, junior Garrett Nimo and sophomore Kevin Nimo. Anyone interested in the recruiting process regarding high school athletes should attend the 4th Annual Recruiting Night and Athletic Recruiting Seminar series scheduled for later this year. Troy and Walled Lake Western high schools will host the twopronged event sponsored by the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association. The Recruiting Fair involves college coaches visiting with high school coaches to pick up game tapes, bios and transcripts of current junior and senior prep football players. The Recruiting Seminar is a free educational assembly for the athletes and parents of football players, especially eighth through 10th graders. It is designed to cover recruiting preparations and give attendees a better understanding of what the recruiting process is all about. Walled Lake Western will host the event on Dec. 5 from 3:30-6:30 p.m. (fair) and 6 p.m. (seminar). Troy will host the event Dec. 13 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. (fair) and 7 p.m. (seminar). For more information, or to register, call (313) 999-0342 or e-mail at kostoff@totalstudentathlete.com.

The Trojans were stopped on downs in Raider territory, and Almont drove for a second touchdown and a quick, 13-0 lead. “Going into it, we felt real confident,” Sparks said. “We had a great week of practice. We were excited to go north and play someone new. “They seized the momentum early, and we started to feel a little pressure and panicked. It snowballed from there. They gained confidence and we lost it, and the next thing we were heading home. “The credit goes to Almont and its coaching staff. We were not as good as they were, and

we wish them the best of luck as they move forward.” Clawson will lose a dozen or so seniors, many of whom were starters, all of whom “contributed in one form or another,” according to Sparks. Lineman James Steffen and multi-purpose back DeShawn Gilbert were three-year starters and two-way players. Other key seniors were Deonte Hill, Greg Gmeiner, Jalen Harrison and Roger Forney. “Obviously, it’ll be tough to replace those guys, but we always manage to find a way,” Sparks said. Ten players will return to the varsity, and the Trojans fill out the lineup with players from this year’s 4-4-1 jayvee team, which was unbeaten against MAC Bronze opponents. “We’ve already met with (next year’s varsity players) after we turned the seniors loose,” Sparks

said. “We tell them they’re now the seniors in the program and, from this day forward, they dictate what the program is like. “We have the same expectations as every other team. We expect to compete; we expect to be in the playoffs. The season has already started. We’ll get them in the weight room next week. Hopefully, they can put it all together, and we can have continued success. “In the next eight months, that’s when the leaders will evolve and kids will step up, and they’ll earn the trust of their peers and coaches. Those are the kids who ultimately will put their stamp on the program. “Every kid who was on varsity and is coming back has the opportunity to influence the direction of the team. It’s whether or not they take advantage of that opportunity. They determine the attitude and expectations.”

17:30.0. Junior Darrell StrongStaple was 23rd overall (18:18), senior John Akers placed 25th (18:22) and sophomore Josh Hughes was 26th (18:30). Junior Sean McQueeney and senior Devin Chartier, another soccer player, placed 47th and 48th, respectively. Akers, a three-year varsity veteran, is the team captain who leads by example, Piornack said. “He’s a real dedicated runner who is more

about the team than himself,” said Piornack, who also coaches the distance members of Ferndale’s track team. “Some people on our team may be doing better, but they are inspired by all the hard work and time that John puts in to improve himself.” Ferndale placed fourth in both the OAA Blue Division Jamborees and at the league meet and finished behind Royal Oak, Berkley and Farmington Harrison in the final team standings. The Eagles’ best invitational showing was at the Hanson Invitational where they placed third.

“On paper, prior to the regional, you would have thought that we were going to finish 10th or 11th,” said Piornack, who took over the program three years ago with five runners — it now boasts 22. “But, I knew the kind of workouts the kids were putting in and I could see that they were getting it together. “We finally had a meet where everyone had a decent race at the same time. That’s why we were able to place third at the regional. “Things are starting to go in the right direction. Our athletes are starting to come around.”

“They knew this was a team effort, and it wasn’t just about an individual. The guys were way more happy to go as a team and to know that they did this together. Basically down to a guy, they had their best race of the season (at the regional).” Royal Oak was led by freshman newcomer Ben Hill who placed seventh at the regional in 16:43.60. Junior Max Benoit, a freshman on the statequalifying team two years ago, was second on the team and eighth overall at the regional in 16:49.40. Senior Leonard Jackson, another member of the 2009 team, was 13th overall in 17:06.40. Senior Adam Quinn was 16th (17:13.70) and junior Willie Davids placed 46th (18:23.20). Seniors Dan Dobras and Joe Ledford also ran at the regional, finishing 65th and 67th, respectively. “It was a rugged course, so we weren’t necessarily expecting personal-best times from everyone,” Piippo said. “But nine of the 14 guys who ran in the race ran their best times, and the other guys were right there. “Everyone had great rac-

es and that right there tells you how much they put into it and how much they trusted the training that they did. That’s how they were ready to perform. We didn’t really surprise ourselves, but from the reaction of some of the coaches who were congratulating us, I think we surprised some other teams.” All of Royal Oak’s varsity experience this fall orig-

inates with its trio of captains. Jackson is a fouryear varsity runner and Dobras and Benoit are three-year varsity members. Ledford and Davids are in their first varsity seasons. “There’s a story for every guy on our team — one through seven I can tell you something,” Piippo said. “We have everyone from a guy who just started running for the first time in August (Davids) to a freshman who ended up being our number one guy to a four-year runner who just plugged away and plugged away. “We really had a good mix on the team. We had good leaders from guys who have been around the block to guys who were really green and had no cross country experience, but were talented. They all just brought it this year.” Royal Oak, with that young lineup, won all three OAA Blue Jamborees. The Ravens placed second at the Center Line meet and did well in the highly competitive meets at Holly and Jackson. “We just preached to the guys to go out there and run the very best race you can. That’s all we can control,” Piippo said. “It just so happened that us running our best race got us into the state meet. They really improved this season. “It’s been a great year, not just because we qualified for states,” he said. “This is a great group of guys and this is just one of those teams where you don’t want the season to end.”

Neff ‘proud’ of Andover’s postseason effort HISTORY-MAKING RUN Bloomfield Hills Andover’s boys soccer team concluded its history-making season Wednesday evening as a Division 2 Final Four participant. Following are Andover’s tournament victories which led to its first semifinal appearance: DISTRICT TOURNAMENT Andover 4, South Lyon East 0 Andover 8, Redford Union 0 Andover 2, Cranbrook Kingswood 1 REGIONAL TOURNAMENT Andover 2, Trenton 0 Andover 2, SCS Lake Shore 0 STATE SEMIFINALS Avondale 2, Andover 1 By Marty Budner Eccentric Staff Writer

As one might expect, it was difficult for Andover senior forward Will Neff to digest Wednesday’s season-ending defeat in Auburn Hills. Playing in the Division 2 boys soccer state semifinal game for the first time in school history, the Barons could not survive a staggering second-half onslaught by host Avondale and suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss. The stinging setback brought a painful halt to a thrilling state-tournament run that fell just one victory short of playing for the first state boys soccer championship in program history. Andover had never before won a district title in the 30 years that the Michigan High School Athletic Association has sponsored the popular post-season tournament. However, posting that first district title, the first regional crown and advancing to the Final Four for the first time ever was the furthest thing from Neff’s mind as the final horn signaled the end to a marvelous season and stellar prep career.

Overcoming adversity

Neff, who overcame some tough knee injuries to lead Andover’s exciting postseason run, nonetheless attempted to put the memorable fall in perspective. “It was a great senior season. We had 12 seniors on the team and I’m really proud of the guys this year,” said Neff, a fouryear varsity player who served as a team captain the past two years. “We’ve been in and out of injuries all year and I feel like

Will Neff (10), a four-year varsity player and Andover’s leading scorer this fall, attracts attention as he performs a balancing act with the soccer ball Wednesday in Auburn Hills.

we never had a full team until the playoffs. “We got our roster back healthy at the right time, and I couldn’t be prouder because we left it all out on the field. It’s been a really satisfying season. You can’t take away the opportunity you have in front of you. “It’s never easy to lose, but I’m really proud of the guys that we got this far,” he said. “You can’t point your finger at anyone. We win as a team and we lose as a team. And, I think we handled it well.” Neff netted Andover’s lone goal against Avondale. Just 10 minutes into the game, Neff used his size and strength to out muscle his defender and set up his scoring opportunity. Once he found some free space, Neff booted the ball along the ground and into the far side of the net past Avondale goalie Ben Richter.

A ‘wonderful’ leader

It was Andover’s first shot on goal and first good scoring opportunity of the game. Neff didn’t miss it as he registered his team-leading 15th goal of the season. Neff scored in every playoff game and finished with 19 points on the season

counting his four assists. “Will is a terrific young man,” said Andover assistant coach Aaron Seaton, a 1998 Andover grad and former Barons soccer captain. “He was one of our three captains who showed leadership throughout the year. “He’s had to battle injuries his entire career. He missed all of his sophomore season and battled a lot of adversity. He’s showed a lot of will with what he’s gone through. “And I think the team picked up emotionally from what he’s been through over the years,” said Seaton. “The team fed off that. He was a wonderful leader for us both on and off the field.”

An outstanding season

Andover finished its outstanding season with a 13-7-3 overall record. The Barons tied for second — with Avondale — in the Oakland Activities Association White Divisions standings behind champion Farmington. The Barons played without a few banged-up starters and dropped their final two games of the regular season to Avondale and Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood.

However, with many of those players returning for the playoffs, the Barons won five straight games before falling to Avondale. Andover posted its district title with wins over South Lyon East, Redford Union and Cranbrook Kingswood. In the regional, the Barons did not allow a goal in defeating Trenton and St. Clair Shores Lake Shore. That set up their rubber-match with Avondale — the teams split their two regular-season games — in the semifinals. Although it didn’t go their way in the end, veteran head coach Geoff Parkinson was satisfied with his team’s season overall. “In 1978 the school won a state title (in the old coaches association sponsorship prior to the MHSAA takeover), but it’s certainly a lot harder to get this far nowadays,” said Parkinson. “There’s a lot of parity and there are a lot of great teams out there. “We always felt like we could have been here before if we weren’t always in one of the most difficult districts in the state. And I think this year proved it. Once we got out of our district we made a nice run.”
