Near or far. Closer than ever. A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The theme of the last year has certainly been... Pivot! Like many of you, when we started staying home in March and brought all of our offerings online, we had no idea what to expect. This piece celebrates ASU Hillel before and during our pandemic, and truly pushes us to remember life pre-COVID. It was filled with Jewish learning over a shared meal, loud Shabbat singing, and Hillel tables throughout campus where we met new students all the time. And, we can’t forget the countless one-on-one conversations with students over coffee, chatting about Judaism, life, relationships, and so much more. The 2019–20 school year brought us our first rabbinic intern and led us to having a fulltime rabbi in fall 2020, something we had been pining for since our beloved Rabbi Lee retired in 2014. We also enjoyed eating bagels, attending community events, and celebrating holidays in person. Missing for us this fall was our special annual gathering in person to raise funds for Hillel and celebrate our successes together.

Guess what? Even a pandemic couldn’t stop us from doing what we do best—supporting students while they make the transition to adult life. The article on the next page highlights some of the ways we have been doing that and some of the things we have learned along the way. We are deeply grateful for our community of supporters. You have stood by us, coming out in full force during Hillel Global Giving Week in May 2020 and making ASU Hillel one of the top Hillels nationally for the number of gifts raised during that week. With friends like you, the Jewish future is bright. All my best,

Debbie Yunker Kail

Physical distancing, not social distancing Since the pandemic began, Hillel has rejected the notion of social distancing. Of course, we can’t be together like we are used to. And of course, spring 2020 in particular was challenging, as everything happened so quickly. However, knowing that we all need each other more than ever has motivated us to push through these challenging times and give students the support they need to do the same.

With all the curveballs throughout the year, ASU Hillel continues to be adaptive, collaborative, and student-centered. We are the same pluralistic and relationship-centered organization students have always relied on, and we take pride in the creative ways we continue to build community and celebrate Jewish life together.

With 5-8 events each week since March 2020, ASU Hillel has provided • Individualized outreach to students through personalized engagement with more than 600 students

• Space to dialogue about the day's issues including racial justice, politics, and civic engagement

• Structure and normalcy through continuing our weekly social events, Shabbat, Passover and High Holiday celebrations, all virtually or safely in person

• Thought-provoking and relevant Jewish content, including classes, 10-minute Torah sessions and oneon-one meetings with our rabbi, to help students contextualize this crisis within the Jewish tradition

• Over 600 meals to go to nourish students' bodies and minds

• Zoom events for Hillel families to celebrate students’ accomplishments and connect with one another

Hillel connected me with so many people and helped foster wonderful friendships. Especially in this confusing time, with COVID, I feel like all of their virtual events have really connected me to such great people and provided me with so many resources I was nervous I would be without here.

Hillel provided me with food and shelter and treated me like family when I needed it most.

Even through these difficult times and all of the uncertainty in the world right now, they have made sure the Jewish community is more unified than ever and that we all have something to do and someone to talk to when we need it. Hillel has shown time and time again that they care about each and every one of us as individuals, about our growth and successes.

Imagine spending your first semester of college at home, while other first-year students are on campus doing what they can to safely meet new friends. Before this semester started, Hillel staff members reached out to me for a virtual ‘get-to-know-you’. Because of that one call, I joined two Hillel classes that helped me build deep connections with students and the Jewish community at ASU. Hillel constantly reminded me that being virtual might have made things harder, but not impossible.
