No part of this publication may be reproduced without permission of the publisher. This month we had the great pleasure of sitting down and chatting with Central Coast local John Wall. John has more energy and enthusiasm at 76 than many of us have at any age. We spoke about many things but the one thing that stuck to mind was the youthful energy and mindset he tributes his life too and the realisation that this can be found in every single one of us. It made me reflect about my Nan's current situation. Nan is 96 and unfortunately is no longer mobile, and as much as she loves spending time with our kids, 5 and 7, her immobility restricts how much she can interact with them. I have to wonder if Nan had been as fit and agile as John at 76 maybe she would be having a very difference experience at this stage in her life.

I love John's theory – "If you're still standing, then anything is possible!" and I think this is a motto to live by. Sometimes too much emphasis can be placed on age and the restrictions that comes with it. But after meeting John, I feel reassured that age can be just a number! Our bodies are extraordinary machines with the capacity to live well beyond 100 and maybe John has found the formula to make this happen. So take that walk, go for that swim, you never know what it might lead to. can do it

Perhaps that’s why we put off planning for our aged care needs – it’s not as much fun to think ahead to a time when we might need more support.

The truth is, most of us avoid thinking about our own future aged care needs, delaying our decisions until perhaps they’re taken out of our hands.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER – ISSUE 49 9 No.3: Accountant Fees

Ray White

No.5: Property Management Fees

Property management fees can vary wildly from state to state and depends on which agency you select. Usually, it’s charged as a proportion of the rent collected, which may be somewhere between 5 and 9 per cent. What you should consider in this case is the cost of not hiring a local property manager from an agency you can trust. If you do it yourself this cost will come in the form of hours out of your day, stress, rental vacancies and possibly even disputes with tenants. It’s better for you and your tenants if you let a trained professional manage that relationship.

Before you sign a contract of sale you should already have a landlord and house insurance policy in place to protect yourself in any event. This should cover you for things damage by tenants or tenant’s guests damage by tenants or tenant’s guests of rental income due to tenant default costs related to eviction of tenant ƒ Replacement value of the property Liability cover and much more.

ƒ

Body corporate fees vary from building to building and state to state, but you should always know the cost before buying an apartment or unit as an investment as they can number in the thousands. One thing you can’t plan for is an extra or special body corporate fee. These may pop up when repairs are needed after a weather event, when a lift unexpectedly breaks down or something otherwise unplanned for occurs. Unfortunately, these can be costly, and provided it’s a legal and reasonable cost, you may be required to pay it. For that reason, it’s always a good idea to keep some ‘just in case’ funds aside for any unexpected events that may result in extra body corporate fees.

It is estimated that the average accountant could cost around $134 an hour. It’s not technically essential to hire an accountant when you buy an investment property, and you could get by filing your own tax return. However, accountants are trained and experienced at maximising the tax efficiency of investment properties. Therefore, hiring an experienced accountant could save you far more than the cost in the long run by reducing your tax bill and making your property work for No.4:you.

Central Coast Council has recently developed a series of road safety videos for older road users. The aim of the videos is to assist older road users to be as safe as possible on and around our Central Coast roads and roadside areas. They provide advice and safety tips to help make safer choices when driving, riding, walking, using a mobility scooter or catching public transport.

Any or all of the videos can be viewed at a time that suits, depending on an individual’s own needs and interest.

The series comprises eight sessions, each covering a different topic. Each session is between around four and nine minutes in length.

The topics are as follows:

NSW road crash data show that people aged 75 years or over are three times more likely to lose their life in a crash than people in their 20s, and this risk increases for people aged 85 or over.

All topics and information in the series are based on Transport for NSW’s publication “On the Road 65Plus”.

Maryam Masters’ No Words is a junior fiction novel about Aria, a 12–year–old refugee, now living in Australia. Aria has just started at a new school and even though he doesn’t speak anymore he befriends Hero, a young girl who feels anything but heroic, and Jaz, their funny, outspoken sidekick. Hero’s dad experiences extreme mood swings and Hero has learnt to live with the ups and downs. Enjoying the good times while they last and finding ways to cope with the bad days. The book opens with Hero, her little sister, and her dad at McDonalds “Macca’s”, where her dad is feeling particularly upbeat and decides to shout everyone in the restaurant hotcakes. Hero is equally embarrassed and amused! Together Aria, Hero and Jaz navigate schoolyard politics – including hiding from His Royal Thug–ness Doofus (Rufus) – while working on a project to help Aria find his voice.

The book explores themes of bullying, trauma, and mental illness. There are interwoven storylines of standover tactics from the mean school kid and more sinister examples of tyranny and loss of freedom of speech. Masters doesn’t shy away from the tough scenes but while the subject matter is painful, it is described gently, through a young lens. There is also a lot of humour running in the background to provide constant comicTherelief.story is told from Hero and Aria’s perspectives. The Meibomian glands are tiny oil glands which line the margins of the upper and lower eyelids (the edges which touch when you Meibomianblink). gland dysfunction (MGD) MGD occurs when the Meibomian glands are not secreting enough oil, or when the oil secreted is of poor quality. The oil gland openings can become clogged, preventing the lubricating oil to come out of the glands. The oil that does make it out of the glands can be unhealthy and cause irritation to the eyes. The tears evaporate at a higher rate due to the lack of this oily layer. MGD is very common and leads to dry eye disease. If left untreated, MGD can progress and become chronic, causing a vicious cycle. Dry eye is caused by many factors and is an inflammatory disease. The tears are disrupted, become unstable and result in discomfort and vision disturbances. Dry eye leads to damage to the surface of the eyes and is more common with increasing age. It is also seen in younger people due to increased use of screens (computer, phones and other devices). Children as young as 10 have been diagnosed with dry eye disease. Most people have dry eye at some point in their life and some may not even realize it!

Commonly, lubricating eye drops are recommended. This only treats the symptoms and not the cause. Eye drops can provide temporary relief while the underlying condition continues to progress. Dry eye is a common and multifactorial condition which can be managed. It starts with finding an optometrist or ophthalmologist with an interest in dry eye, correct diagnosis, and evidence based up to date treatment to return to healthy function of the meibomian glands and tear film.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a revolutionary treatment for dry eye developed by world–leading ophthalmologist, Dr Rolando Toyos (USA). It also targets abnormal blood vessels which cause rosacea, improving the appearance of the skin and ocular rosacea. VIBRANT CONCEPTS

If you are of a certain age you should wear softer, pastels and neutral colours. fact! You can wear Fashion Colours no matter your age if they are right for your colour palette and suit your personality.

Each season Pantone (the leaders in colour forecasting), overseas designers and artists introduce a new array of shades to wear and ways to wear them. These hues ultimately set the trends for both fashion and interior design. While it is great to look modern and on trend the secret to wearing these shades and trends successfully is adaptation. You need to adapt what is trending to suit you!

The way you adapt these trends is by translating the “trend makers” visions (which is our area of expertise) and you can find this information in the VC Style & Beauty Portal, at a personal Style Session, however, for a taster we have revealed a few of the keys colours in this article!

So often society gets caught up in dressing for “age”, to look “youthful” or not “mutton dressed as lamb” and as a result women often end up wearing colours that leave them looking frumpy and drab and feeling blah. did you know!

Colour doesn’t discriminate against age!

There is no age limit to wearing fashion colours, you just need to find the right ones that enhance and not detract from your “natural beauty”. That being your complexion, eyes, personality and style.

Once you have this information it is all about choosing the colours that you love but more importantly the colours that love you, then, add them to your wardrobe for instant, modern style. Keep reading to find out more… Determining the best shades of fashion colours for you Everyone can wear pink, the trick to finding a pink that is appropriate and doesn’t result in looking “mutton dressed as lamb” is determining if you need a warm or cool and soft or bright pink (this is what we specialise in at our VC Colour Analysis) and the colours that work best back with the hue. For example a Spring palette would wear a Warm Hot Pink with Olive whereas a Winter palette would wear a Cool Hot Pink with Black –regardless of their age.

There is nothing quite like a good night sleep and waking up feeling refreshed and ready to enjoy your day. However, if you are someone that wakes up feeling unrefreshed, experience daytime sleepiness, have poor concentration, headaches, depressed mood and irritability you could have sleep apnoea.

Sleep apnoea is a condition where you stop breathing for short periods when you sleep. This results in a drop in oxygen levels in the blood and triggers your brain This can happen multiple times per hour and usually people don’t completely wake up and are not aware it is happening. Consequently, you feel more tired and sleepy than usual. The most common type of sleep apnoea is ‘’Obstructive Sleep Apnoea’’ which occurs when the upper airways become relaxed and floppy when you sleep and cause partial or complete blockage of the airways. If the airway gets narrowed, it can cause snoring but when there is complete blockage your oxygen levels drop and your brain wakes you up to take a breath.

ƒ

ƒ

Symptoms People with obstructive sleep apnoea may not be aware they have it as they don’t remember waking up during the night. They may notice waking up gasping or chocking during the night. Partners or parents may report loud snoring or that they stop breathing during their sleep. During the day however, people with sleep apnoea may notice the following: ƒ Wake up feeling non refreshed ƒ Day time sleepiness Poor concentration and mental functioning Headaches

Sleeping tablets Enlarged tonsils and adenoids (a common cause in children )

ƒ

3 in 10 men and 1 in 5 women have sleep apnoea and if left undiagnosed can lead to a higher risk of health problems.

Nasal congestion ƒ Age – as age increases, throat muscles tend to relax more during sleep. Family history of sleep apnoea.

What is Sleep Apnoea?

The first line of treatment is making changes to your lifestyle. This may include weight loss, smoking cessation, reduction of alcohol intake, avoiding sedating medication, and sleeping on your side can make a big difference to symptoms. Positional devices To help you avoid sleeping on your back. There is the tennis ball technique (where you attach a tennis ball to your back), and special pillows to help change your sleeping position. Sleep apnoea mouthguards or splints These can be fitted by your dentist and can sometimes work well for those with mild sleep apnoea.

There is also an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. It can also lead to increased incidence of motor vehicle and workplace accident due to daytime sleepiness and poor concentration. Testing for Sleep Apnoea If you have symptoms suggestive of sleep apnoea you should have a chat to your General Practitioner. If you GP suspects you may have sleep apnoea, they may refer you for sleep studies. Sleep studies involve the measurement of your breathing and oxygen levels overnight to help diagnose or exclude sleep apnoea. These may be done at home or at a specialised sleep laboratory. Your GP may also check your blood pressure and do some blood tests to exclude other causes of sleep apnoea and associated health conditions such as diabetes.Thediagnosis of sleep apnoea can be made depending on the amount of apnoea’s or events that occur. An event is when breathing stops for a minimum of 10 seconds. ƒ Normal sleep –less than 5 events per night ƒ Mild Sleep Apnoea –5 to 14 episodes per hour ƒ Moderate Sleep Apnoea –15 to 30 episodes per hour ƒ

Lifestyle Measures

The good news is there are many treatment options available for sleep apnoea depending on the cause and severity of symptoms.

ƒ

ƒ Surgery May sometimes be required as is more common in children with sleep apnoea and may involve removal of enlarged adenoids or tonsils. If you have daytime sleepiness, are a loud snorer and perhaps a little bit grumpy please have a chat with your doctor. Untreated sleep apnoea can have significant consequences for your health and quality of life. We all know how much better we feel after a good quality night’s sleep.

It involves wearing a face mask when you sleep which is connected to a pump that pushes pressurised air into your airways to keep your throat open and prevent it blocking as your sleep. Although the thought of such a machine to help with sleep is daunting there is good evidence it makes a big difference to patients quality of sleep and therefore quality of life.

Welcome to Coffee with a Coastie. We had the great pleasure of sitting down and chatting with Central Coast local John Wall. At 76 he is faster and fitter than most of us are at any age. I hope you are as inspired as I am by John’s story as he returned to athletics later in life and went on to become the fastest human in the world for his age at 62. John wants nothing more than to inspire both young and old through his story and to promote the benefits of exercise and keeping a young mind.

JOHN WALL LOCAL ATHLETE AND coffeeCOACH WITH A Coastie

4. You then went on to become the fastest human in the world for your age at 62 running 100m in 11.97sec. Now at the age of 76 you hold 3 world records for your age group. What are these current records.

I’m still ranked as the fastest human being in the world for the 75 age group in the 60m, 100m and 200m run.

24 ON THE COAST – OVER 55

1. You were senior athletics champion at school. Though your athletics career was cut short when you became unwell with tuberculosis. After recovering you didn’t return to athletics and instead worked in the film industry. How did you end up in the film industry? When I was in the army I looked after all the weapons for an action movie. It was when I was around 19 years old in China, on a trampoline in a gym and a gentleman came in and said, hey, do you mind if I have a go on the trampoline? I’m looking at this slightly older guy thinking to myself you gotta be careful. He then got up and did these amazing things. He did somersaults, he did everything. I was gobsmacked. I introduced myself and he said he was in China making a movie. I mentioned I spoke fluent Chinese and asked if I could be of assistance and that catapulted me into mainstream film with 20th Century Fox.

2. You worked with some big names in the film industry, who was most memorable? Probably two people that I worked with on a 20th Century Fox movie called The Sand Pebbles, Steve McQueen who was the primary star and Candice Bergen, who was the female lead. She became pretty famous, but when I was working with her, she was 18 and it was virtually her second movie that she had ever done and Steve was an amazing guy. He was sort of a hero of my day. I used to watch him in movies like The Great Escape and all sorts of different films.

3. How many years was it before you returned to the track later in life. I returned to the track when I was 50 and I left it when I was 23. So 27 years.

5. You say we can keep healthy, as an aging demographic, by doing the simple things. What are these simple things? If you are physically capable, though have never done anything before, go for a walk for an hour. You don’t need to run along and pound the pavements even if you’re capable of doing that, because that can create extreme loading through the joints, knees, ankles, hips? Yes, I train at the gym. Though for many you just want to maintain your health later in life. Because our bodies have to carry us on this journey. However long that journeyDon'tis. you dare let them tell you that you're too old or that's its too late. If you're still standing, then anything is possible. Own your awesomeness and show everyone that greatness doesn’t have an expiration date. Keep going. You got this.

8. Also in our previous conversation, I mentioned one of the reasons that I wanted to do these podcasts is to show myself, my kids and the community what is possible outside of each individuals current awareness, by sharing other people’s stories within the community. You then said I should really want to show people the impossible. Can you talk a little about this?

7. In a previous conversation you said you feel the most powerful word one can say is ‘want’, when describing what they are looking to do in life. Can you talk a little about the word ‘want’? I think the important thing is that there’s two words, like and want. What is the difference between those? Liking something is a very passive happy go lucky word. Gee I’d like to ride that horse. Whereas when you choose the word want in your self descriptive process, then you are saying to yourself, this is an action word. I want to ride that horse. So, I think that to like something is an emotionally empowering word, but the real strength comes from wanting it, because when you want it, you change the dynamic of what’s actually happening in your brain and that want then focuses the brain into achieving that goal.

The impossibilities of life are not something that everybody thinks about. I feel it comes down to the wanting to be able to achieve the impossible. It is something that I think we need to not restrict ourselves by the limitation of possibility, but that we allow ourselves to open our minds to the impossible, because in the impossible lies the magic, in the impossible lies the crazy youthful, fun, and joy of doing something that’s never been done before. Is it impossible for you to say, I will do something a little bit different today to be able to achieve the impossible. Impossibilities are really possibilities that are just on the sidelines that we never think about.

We tend to categorize somebody’s brilliance by the piece of paper that they’re able to engineer for themselves in a Scholastic environment. It’s not always the case. Sometimes you’ve gotta be somebody who rolls up their sleeves and gets out there and just does it and wants to achieve it. I say go for it and don’t be afraid. It’s a big world out there. And there’s millions of people that want to help you. If you just ask, don’t be afraid to ask for help. This interview has had to be edited for readability and length. So please be sure to listen to the full conversation with John on our Coffee with a Coastie podcast as we chat about: John filling a bath for Australian actor Chips Rafferty and working with Steve McQueen How he got through tuberculosis and his initial injuries when returning to running Who John contributes his success to outside of simply a lot of hard work Who inspires John to keep running His mission to have an international Indoor Athletics Centre built on the Central Coast and much more…

9. My final question, what advice do you have for someone who did or didn’t do something when they were younger, and now later in life and they think they are too old or it’s too late to give it a go again or do it for the first time?

www.onthecoastpublications.com.au/blog/podcast/atjohn-wall/orscantheQRcode.PhotobyJonWaddyJohnWallandChrisMcCormick

ƒ

6. You say we need to stay young in our minds and in everything we do. What do you think and do to stay young at 76? I try to motivate myself and connect with the youthful energy that is everywhere. I like to recognize that there is a joy to life. There is a joy in looking at our grandchildren. Playing carpet bowls at the local community centre or doing simple Tai Chi exercises. There is a joy in all these things, search them out. Search out people who are positive minded, search out people who’ve got an energy for life, search out people who are going to give you a reason to live a happy and joyful life.

Just as it can feel fabulous after spring cleaning our house, so too it can feel rejuvenating to spring clean ourselves and head into the warmer months with a fresher outlook. Spring cleaning the physical body can be as easy as reducing alcohol, caffeine, refined sugar and increasing the intake of seasonal vegetables, pure water and simply moving the body more. When we’re very busy or heavily focused in certain areas of our lives, we tend to move at such a pace that we don’t have awareness around the subtle changes in our environment and the subtle needs of the body that may change along with the seasons.

Finding a friend to ‘spring clean’ with can be a fun and accountable way to reset together. Take even just one small step in a direction that feels closer to a healthier and happier path because as the saying goes, this is not a dress rehearsal, this is the main event.

tomatoes or a couple of pickles as a snack can increase vegetable intake in between meals. 2 pieces of fruit per day will help to satisfy sweet cravings as well as add beneficial vitamin and protective antioxidant value to the body.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER – ISSUE 49 27

Spring is a fabulous time to not only check in with ourselves physically but also mentally and emotionally too. Having awareness around our thoughts and emotions means our life is less likely to just pass by and awareness can lead to consciously creating more life experiences that we want. The man–made resources and things around us haven’t just appeared or been shipped in from another planet but rather everything began as someone’s thought. We are fantastic creators if we learn to master our thoughts rather than our thoughts randomly appearing in our mind and unconsciously running the show. Learning to master your thoughts rather than the other way around can be a game changer for mental health and happiness. There is an abundance of free resources available via the internet and library to explore this phenomenon and the world that exists behind our eyes.

spring clean also requires a check in to how the emotions are showing up in the body. Many health issues in the body have been linked to chronic stress – both physical and emotional. Recognising patterns of behaviour and being honest enough with ourselves to acknowledge unhealthy reactive emotional patterns can improve relationships with the self and others. Taking responsibility for our own emotions and realising that it’s impossible for another to physically ‘put’ an emotion inside of us is an interesting concept. Working with a practitioner to help have a healthier response rather than react to the outer world from old belief structures can make the world a much sweeter place to exist.

Spring is all about new beginnings and this includes your health and happiness at any age.

When I left home at 18 to house share, travel and live in a cockroach–infested, crumbly terrace in Redfern within walking distance to Sydney University, the first thing my parents did was turn my bedroom into a glass roofed conservatory. Any prospect of ever returning home was dashed and occupied instead by plants and succulents. True! I kid you not. Now I am not suggesting major knock down renovations if they go off for a holiday, but let’s not rule it out. It works! But seriously, this is a tough one. Because, it really does seem unnaturally, unfairly harder for young adults today. The cost of living, the cost of education and ‘adulting’ seems truly inflated compared to ‘our day’. It’s hard, but in some ways, it is just a different version of hard. As a coach once said to me, “Sarah, it’s ok. Life and love is sometimes hard. We can do hard things!” As each generation comes through, they are further and further distanced and sheltered from the hardships of the generation before them. Remember when we didn’t have mobile phones and computing? We got paid in cash with paper payslips? Remember when there were no credit cards, AfterPay or the bank of ‘mum and dad? Remember when you just had to ‘live within your means’ and maybe that meant you had to work two jobs? I remember at Uni, living on porridge, rice and semolina and hanging out for the wonderful $2 vegetarian meals provided by the Hari Krishna club, and eating staff meals at my night time week night pub job and weekend, fine dining waitressing. I lived off my tips, jangling home with a bra full of coins and small notes. OK. OK. Enough small violins. And yet, we can do hard things. They can do hard things too. It’s not permanent, just a part of an essential part of life and love’s rollercoaster.Maybeitneeds a family heart to heart sharing with your children your feelings, needs and desires. Maybe it’s putting a plan in place to give them time to think about how they’d like to own their next steps into independence and adulthood and discussing a time frame for future moves. Life is too short to not at some point in time, put yourself first. It is ok to–step away from parenting obligations once your kids are adults. Life is about continual transitions and changes and evolutions. Even into our adulthood and mid–life, we can invite transformation, change and new directions. We must learn to embrace these especially the ones of our choosing and desires because trust me, life will impose transformations, change and new directions anyway. You may as well get in first and choose your ownAndadventure.whoknows, there is a fair chance life and love will come full circle. Later, when the winds of change swirl again, maybe, you will be in a new space and place, and find yourselves back together again. Multi–generational households are all the rage in the third age. So go on. With all the love and goodness in your heart driving your intentions…kick ‘em out. Follow the sun. The kids, they’ll be fine. Much love, Sarah x

“ Anyway, walking past the aforementioned matchsticks to the Art Gallery (where’s that f–ing napkin now!), we scan our vouchers on our iPhones at the gallery and enjoy the Archibald. It’s chockers. It seems everyone has the same idea: quick, use those vouchers! However, we are shocked at the number of seniors not wearing masks. Carn people! With covid effectively taking out a Boeing 747 worth of seniors each week, what do seniors need to understand before they simply wear a mask in a crowded public space? We just don’t get it.

I am in my early 20s. I am drinking a beer at a party at my next–door neighbour’s bohemian warehouse in Redfern. I’m an impoverished student at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and most of my chums are musos, deadbeat poets or struggling painters. Suddenly, the seediest looking derelict of a human being sidles up beside me at the party. He’s trying to engage me in conversation through yellow teeth. He’s a heroin addict. My entire body language says, “Shoo! Be gone with you!” But he persists. Now the smelly tramp draws two matchsticks on a napkin, asking what I think of his idea for his lame sculpture. One match is unused. The other is burned. In a blue cloud of smoke from his rolled cigarette, he says, “the matchsticks represent ‘life and death’. Perhaps you can use one to burn your clothes, I think. My next door neighbour, seeing my unease, discreetly flags me over. My neighbour is the (then) struggling painter, Tim Storrier. (Now Tim Storrier AM, who won the 2012 Archibald Prize.) He nudges me. “Psst! Just thought you’d like to know that the guy you keep brushing is Brett Whiteley.” Today, as I stand outside the NSW Art Gallery before Brett’s two giant matchsticks – one unused and one burned – I think crap. I wish I’d kept thatWhennapkin.Ilived in Redfern/ Chippendale as a struggling student, living on lentils, brown rice and left wing ideals, it was perfect: close to universities and cheap. But no one wanted to live in Redfern any more than they wanted to live in Chornobyl. Indeed, the word Redfern still conjures negative images for seniors. But I’m here to tell you things have changed. Indeed, millennials would kill to buy a house in Redfern/Chippendale now. So what would it be like to have a weekend getaway in my old stomping ground?Ourdigs for this nostalgic travel adventure are Adina Sydney Chippendale. Set in a residential area, this unassuming hotel is an 8–minute walk from Redfern Station if sans car. (If driving, Adina has parking.) The building was recently transformed with a contemporary interior design and fit–out. To step into Adina Chippendale is to step into a secluded, inner city oasis, with interiors in soft galah pinks and greys, with terrazzo tiles, all enclosed in a hip mid–century aesthetic. Like all Adina Apartments it includes a kitchen and laundry and their wonderful (Simba) pillows, surely made from the belly fluff of angels. This Adina is within spitting distance of the Seymour Centre, where we see a play that evening. It’s also perfectly situated amongst Chippendale’s groovy cafés and galleries and virtually across the road from the major department stores at Broadway, such as Peters of Kensington and Myer. Now did you do what we did? On the final weekend of the NSW Dine and Discover Vouchers, we panicked, using them up madly before they ran out – hence the Seymour Centre and we also saw the Archibald Prize at the NSW Art Gallery. Psst! Did you know parking at the Domain is only $12 all day? (6min walk to the Art Gallery via Art Gallery Rd.)

Psst! Just thought you’d like to know that the guy you keep brushing is Brett Whiteley.”

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER – ISSUE 49 31 wish to use up more vouchers. But can you believe the museum is free this weekend? How ironic. (Hey, it’s good to have a government job.) Anyway, a lot’s changed at the Barracks since we visited last. They now have a fabulous audio tour that takes you through the different incarnations of the barracks – which is a palimpsest of its erstwhile residents. But suddenly I hear lots of people coughing around me in the dark. Panicked about covid, I turn to my wife and whisper, “I’m not sure this is safe in here. I can hear people coughing everywhere!” She laughs, explaining it’s the sickly convicts on our audio recording. She’s right. I did hear more cockney accents than in a Dickens Audio Book. For mind, possibly the most moving items at the Barracks is the detritus found under floorboards: a child’s shoe, a clay pipe, a Victorian steel knitting needle. Postcolonial narrative, we drive back to our digs in Chippo to have a glass of bubbles on the long balcony of our stylish apartment. Here I reflect on my old neighbourhood. And how I struggled just to survive as a student. If you’ve ever read the wonderful, Ruth Park, you’ll know that the area was always associated with privation in Sydney. Suddenly a smartly dressed guest wanders out of an apartment to sit at a deckchair by Adina’s twinkling pool, talking on his mobile about stock options. What do you think now, Ruth? Before the play at the Seymour Centre, we dine early at The Rose Hotel, Chippendale (over the road from the Adina). Again, I am sitting in the pub gobsmacked (metaphorically). Because last time I was here I was gobsmacked (literally). Back in the day, at this pub, you’d get a fight faster than a drink. Anyway, we thought being early midweek the restaurant would be quiet. But it was as packed as a refugee train. The meals were fabulous and the wines outstanding. How could this be the same bucket–of–blood pub? Where am I? The following morning, we breakfast next door to Adina at a cafe, Terra Cotta Roasters. The brekkie is excellent with delicious coffee as the name suggests. Customers are mostly hipsters with Ned Kelly beards, cradling designer dogs with Diamanté collars. Or smartly dressed empty–nester retirees who could have stepped out of an Armani catalogue. As we wander around the old neighbourhood, I spy funky art galleries and even a tattoo museum (however that works). My wife and I (now married 35 years) can’t believe the change in our old neighbourhood. We kick ourselves for not buying the flea–ridden terrace we were renting all those years ago. But who knew? At strolls end, we find ourselves walking up a tidy street with towering office blocks. I turn to my wife and say, “you’re not going to believe this. We have just walked up the ‘The Block’. She looks at me open mouthed. Having taught indigenous kids at NAISDA college for 4 years, I always had loads of Koori chums all my life. Even as a student. But whenever visiting chums at The Block, I always felt a slight trepidation, even if I did have a mohawk and looked pretty tough back then. These days I’m all fine–knit cardigans and sensible shoes. Matt Monroe is crooning on my iPod. As we drive out of Redfern and point the car north, I think my only connection to those old Redfern days is the team I still support: The Rabbitohs. And these days they even win games. How apt. Adina Chippendale offers 42 spacious studio rooms or one, two and three –bedroom apartments. Providing an ideal sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the city, the rooms have been stylishly fitted with newly furnished fixtures and furniture throughout. They offer generous lounge and dining areas, along with free WiFi. 24–hour reception and onsite parking. There’s a pool, and gym or you can relax in the secluded courtyard. Many of Sydney’s best new eateries are close by, including Spice Alley and Ester. The apartments are perfectly located among some of Sydney’s best galleries and forward–thinking precincts. Within a stone’s throw of contemporary Chinese gallery White Rabbit and performing arts venues like the Seymour Centre, all of which are perfect for cultural day adventures and evening entertainment. Indulge in some retail therapy with a visit to the many shops and market stalls of Central Park. With a fully equipped kitchen in every apartment, you can cook in your room. If not, that’s ok, many of Sydney’s best hawker–style eateries are close by, including Spice Alley and Ester. Eat in or take away and enjoy a picnic at the tranquil nearby park Chippendale Green. Soak up the bohemian café culture, sample international cuisine or experience fine dining in a hatted restaurant. Rooms average at $220 per night. fact #1
