New Year, New You – Goal Setting Workshop

Sit Right for Your Type ☻

Did you know that sitting places more stress on your lower back than standing or laying down? Sitting improperly can result in premature ageing, fatigue and countless aches and pains. In this workshop you will not only learn how to sit properly at home and at work in order to reduce daily postural stresses, but you will also learn the best exercises to strengthen and maintain your spinal health. Even a map can’t help you if you don’t know where you want to be. This 3 hour workshop is an intensive hands on preparation specifically designed to launch you into 2011. Utilizing goals, affirmations and gratitudes, as popularized by best selling books such as The Secret, you will be guided through the steps as you create your very own “Playbook” to success. Handling Stress before it Handles You ☻ The majority of health problems are either caused or aggravated by stress. You will learn what the most common stress related ailments are and what you can do to prevent them. Nutrition for Vibrant Health ☻ Learn how to increase energy, slow the ageing process, and boost your health and immunity through proper nutrition. This 2 hour session begins with a tutorial on eating smart and teaches you what your body requires to build a better you. This class may include a tour through the grocery store, as Dr. Stepney shows you how to apply the information on your next shopping trip. Course fee is $20. Planning For Your Future ☻ Do you wonder about writing a Will, Personal Directive or Power of Attorney? This presentation will explain: what these documents are, and what they achieve; how they are made; what goes in them; and the kinds of things that need to be considered. It will also describe some common examples. This session will help you decide if, how and when to plan for your future personal and financial needs. The presentation is, however, not a do-it-yourself guide: it gives general information only, not legal advice. Community Adult Learning Council Ask a Nurse ☻ Join us Wednesdays for our new Ask a Nurse program. One topic each month with two options to attend (daytime or evening). Time will be provided at the end of each session to “Ask a Nurse”. All classes will be held at Family and Community Services, Sherwood Park, group room B. Support will be provided for ESL participants who wish to attend. Please register if possible, however; drop-ins are welcome. No cost. Max 10 Getting health care when You are sick: topics to be discussed will be the Alberta Health card, applying for a card, what is covered by the Alberta Health card. If time permits and if people already have this knowledge then we can advance to types of health services, Health Link, and how to access these services. January 12 (10-11 am) or January 19 (7-8 pm)

Finding a family doctor, walk-in clinics, emergency treatment and emergency departments. Learn how to start the process, how and when do we access these facilities, and what is an emergency. Additional preventative health services: dental and eye care. February 9 (10-11 am) or February 16 (7-8 pm)

Continuation of heart health: prevention and what everyone can do. Strokes: signs and symptoms, what is a stroke, and what can be done to prevent strokes. March 23 (10-11 am) or March 30 (7-8 pm)

Emergencies- what is an emergency and what can be done at home. What is an illness- when to seek medical aid, signs and symptoms of different illnesses.

Down and Dirty on Drugs ☻ Call it prevention or intervention—you will want to attend these two sessions on illicit drug use amongst our youth or young adults. Your two facilitators have been involved in the area of addictions for many years and will present the “down and dirty” on drug use (including prescription) in our own backyard. Merry Mixers Square Dancing

Introduction to heart health: what is a heart attack, signs and symptoms, when to get help. What is going to happen when emergency help is accessed and what are some of the tests that may be done.

Continuation of different kinds of emergencies. Basic anatomy and physiology. Treating minor injuries.

Website Development Series for Small Businesses Green Hectares in partnership with the Fort Saskatchewan/Strathcona County Community Adult Learning Council presents the Website Development Series for Small Businesses. This computer series has been developed for small businesses with an emphasis on rural businesses. Search Engine Optimization

Participants will learn the importance of branding; go through the process of creating a logo and colour scheme, ensuring business cards, letterhead, print media and websites all follow their visual identity guidelines. Google AdWords Campaigns

Participants will learn to understand and create a purpose for their website and develop a diagram of the pages, links and content. Participants should bring a list of possible pages of content. Date: Tuesday, February 8, 2011

Participants will learn the concepts that Google uses to manage AdWords Campaigns, then they create an ad and learn to manage and monitor a Google AdWords Campaign. Participants should bring a credit card if they want to complete a purchase of ads, a list of key phrases that you wish to create ads for, and a list of products or services that you wish to create campaigns for. Web Site Planning

Participants will explore a number of free hosted sites and choose one that meets their needs and will leave with homework on coming up with content, pictures, etc. in order to populate their web site. Participants should bring available visual identity package including: logos, colours, and fonts. Date: Tuesday, March 8, 2011

Add Content to Web Site Adding content and making changes to the web site. Participants will add their collected content and then publish their site. Participants should bring digital copies of content, pictures and other information to upload onto their sites. Date: Tuesday, March 22, 2011

Participants will learn how to set up LinkedIn and Twitter accounts; add contacts; join groups and maintain their accounts. Students should bring at least a dozen contacts to add into their social media sites. As well as a professional headshot (photo), executive summary or highlights of qualifications, career goals, education history, employment history for profile development. Date: Tuesday, May 3, 2011

Facebook Participants will setup a business group and learn to create Facebook Ads. Students should bring a profile image for the public to view. Example: a logo, or photo on a USB stick or CD. Credit card for Ad creation (optional). Date: Tuesday, May 10, 2011

Roots of Healing is a 10 week program starting 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm Tuesday, January 11, 2011. Roots of Healing will provide participants with information on the causes and effects of childhood sexual abuse and an opportunity to learn through shared experiences of group participants, about ways in which they have been affected that are common among survivors of sexual violence. Participants will also identify and learn about their resilient qualities including their skills and strengths that have assisted them to overcome the sexual abuse. It’s Not Sex It’s Popularity is a three week information series starting on Wednesdays in January 2011. This program runs approximately 1.5 -2 hours each evening. This workshop series will include topics such as: o Setting Boundaries for a New Social Code

Losing Touch with Nature is a 3 week program starting on Wednesdays in February 2011, this program runs approximately 1.5-2 hours each evening. This program will focus on parent and toddler relationships and the effects of a positive interaction with nature, to learn what grass feels like, what it’s like to hug a tree, and how to splash in the rain and mud puddles. These are not sensations that can be learned or felt through a television set or computer monitor. Research is now suggesting that children under the age of two years of age should not be watching television for any length of time, if at all.

Strathcona County Community Mediation Conflict is a normal part of day to day life—unresolved conflict can make life difficult and stressful. A breakdown in communication is often a key contributor to the conflict or why it cannot be resolved. Mediation provides the support of a third party, neutral mediator to create a safe place for people in a dispute to have a discussion and explore how to resolve a conflict.
