INTERMOT and EICMA: Worth it? CONTENTS DESPITE some efforts by the organisers to offer reduced-price packages, the major European shows are increasingly expensive for exhibitors and visitors alike. As INTERMOT in Cologne and EICMA in Milan loom into view, we asked their organisers to explain why they remain relevant in the rapidly changing European motorcycle market, and what they offer the industry, most notably its dealer base. “As we will be featuring the entire Who’s Who of the international motorcycle and scooter industry, expectations naturally rise high. At INTERMOT the list of participants includes Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha, BMW, Ducati, the Piaggio Group, Harley-Davidson, Triumph and KTM, and we are expecting to host approximately 1,000 suppliers from 40 countries,” says Kölnmesse Executive VP Oliver Kuhrt. “In terms of visitors we aim, and expect, to match the figure we reached in 2008 — that is, approximately 200,000 visitors, including more than 55,000 buyers. “So INTERMOT Cologne 2010 on the one hand will be a festival for all motorcycle and scooter enthusiasts, and on the other will offer an effective international business platform for the trade.” Kuhrt says the show in Cologne offers unrivalled business contacts, market intelligence and information on future trends. “These are the real benefits for motorcycle dealers. Given the fact that around 1,000 suppliers are present, dealers are able to gain a complete market overview in one place at one time here in Cologne, in a well-organised and concentrated format. “We strive to strengthen the business character of the show by offering a bundle of services and contact opportunities. The first three days are more or less focused on trade visitors and dealers: the public tends to visit the show at the weekend. We also offer a matchmaking programme on our homepage and separate work and leisure facilities in a Dealers’ Lounge at the show. Also, the (International Dealer News) International Night on 6th October is another opportunity for business networking.” Kuhrt points to the unique features of the German show as an additional attraction, such as the Workshop Centre, where experienced PTW engineering staff from one of Germany’s foremost vehicle academies will demonstrate

the latest equipment and techniques, while also being available for personal discussions. “And of course all the other events at the show are open to the dealers, too. So they have the opportunity to get in touch with real fans of motorcycles, in the show or watching the events outside, listen to their needs and ideas, see how they feel about innovations and new developments.” He says INTERMOT will be different this year because as well as featuring motorcycles, scooters, quads, accessories, parts and clothing, new elements will include bicycles and electric mobility – pedelecs and e-bikes – as well as the e-scooters and e-motorcycles seen two years ago. EICMA Managing Director Costantino Ruggiero also emphasises the return of many OEMs and major industry players, who have been absent from Milan in recent years. These include Honda, Yamaha, Fuchs, Nolan and Dainese, the latter a leader in clothing and safety which has not displayed its products at the Milan Show for over a decade. As well as 47 major returnees, 17 companies will also make their debut at EICMA 2010, giving the most complete line-up seen in recent years. “In 2010 we will have a show that is really representative of the whole PTW world,” Ruggiero says. “And new features, including the free Visitor Club card for dealers from abroad giving access to free food, beverages and rest areas, make me confident we will reach our goal in attracting an extensive international industry audience.” He emphasises that many new model launches are planned, there will be a special motorcycle tourism section, and last year’s successful Green Planet electric and hybrid vehicle section will also be featured again this year. “Finally Motolive, with its 80.000 sq.m. of outdoor races, competitions, riding schools, trials, events, exhibitions and music is like nothing else in the world. EICMA 2010 will be the greatest, most beautiful and most complete motorcycle industry show anywhere this year!”

NEWS ROOM GERM AN REPO RT Stephan Maderner, editor of German motorcycle trade magazine Bike & BUSINESS, takes a look at the main issues currently affecting the industry in his country

Victory! IF a draft law currently in front of the German parliament is approved, the country’s youth will be able to ride lowpowered PTWs from the age of 15,including mopeds, scooters and quads with a maximum speed of 45 km/h. This easier access to two-wheel mobility means new hopes for the suffering motorcycle sector. Ministers in the Federal government have finally shown some courage – the new licence regime is to be welcomed wholeheartedly! Unfortunately no agreement has yet been reached on the issue of allowing car licence holders to ride 125cc PTWs. Also, there is the possibility that the right for car license holders to ride three-wheelers such as Piaggio's MP3 scooter might be withdrawn, which would definitely be a step backwards. Nevertheless, we are proud to have contributed through the bike & business petition, which ran from March this year in a bid to persuade government to reform the PTW licence. By 22 July, the petition had gained 16,840 signatures. The motorcycle sector will undoubtedly benefit from this change, but we need to maintain pressure to ensure politicians continue to take the riding community’s interests into account in the future.

Phoenix Distribution to represent Nolan and Rev’It! in UK ITALIAN helmet maker Nolan Group and Dutch apparel specialist Rev’It! will be distributed in the UK by Phoenix Distribution, from December for the former and September for the latter. They will join Phoenix’s existing brand line-up of Abus, Kappa, Yoshimura, Pinlock, Fine Vision, Max Vision, VentureShield and Shift It. More brands will be added and announced at a later date, according to the company. Arai will remain within Phoenix, operating as a separate company, “to ensure 100% focus can be given on continuing to build and service its Five Star dealer network and loyal customer base with its own dedicated sales team”. Phoenix Managing Director John Wakefield said: “Over the years the market has thrown up new challenges, and for a long time we felt the need to keep our brand offering at a fairly low level. We now know the time is right to start to re-build Phoenix and we could not choose a better partner than the Nolan Group to help us do this. We already know the brand well, it has a great reputation, particularly

for quality, and we look forward to re-launching X-Lite, Nolan and Grex to the UK dealer network later this year.” With regard to the Dutch company he added: “REV’IT! is a superb brand to complement our lineup and we feel extremely proud to have been selected by the company to be their representative in the UK. REV’IT! sits perfectly with our new brand strategy and expansion plans and we cannot wait to get the ball rolling with the launch of the 2011 Spring/Summer collection in September”.

Rieju seeks worldwide distributors RIEJU has been creating stylish small capacity motorcycles since 1934, and is looking to appoint new distributors outside the EU. Producing over 20,000 machines each year, the Barcelona-based company says its models are very competitive and that market pricing is well below competition levels. The Rieju range covers on and off road machines in the Sport, SM, Enduro, Trail and Fun sectors. New light weight enduro and Trial style

machines of 125cc, 200cc and 250cc offer big potential for existing and developing markets and the very serious WR powered 450cc Enduro bike is the flagship of the range and already a proven race winner in Belgium, France, the UK and Spain. Rieju wants to talk to on- and offroad dealers who want to work with market-leading products and can provide full support for marketing, spares, technical and warranty functions.

The company will be present at both INTERMOT Cologne and EICMA Milan. If interested, email Jamie.masterman@riejumoto.com

Cimamotor 2010 N REPORT A C I R E M A

Through the first six months of 2010, shipments of HarleyDavidson motorcycles were 112,720 units, a 15.2% fall on last year. Revenues over the period were $1.64bn (E1.27bn), a 9.8% decrease compared to the year-ago period. Gross margin was 35.7% and operating margin was 13.1%, compared to 35.7% and 16.8% respectively in last year's first half. Ducati North America reported a 7.5% sales increase in July compared to the same month last year in the U.S.A., Canada and Mexico. In the U.S. alone, Ducati sales were up 4.75%. Demand for the Multistrada 1200 is exceeding supply and the new Monster 796, which was launched in July, also helped to boost Ducati’s sales figures. Three executives of American off-road motorcycle manufacturer US Highland died in a plane crash in July. The three were President Mats Malmberg, Chief Operating Officer Chase Bales and Chief Financial Officer Damian Riddoch.

FROM October 21st to the 24th, 2010, the 9th China International Motorcycle Trade Exhibition (CIMAMotor 2010) will be held in Chongqing, in central China. The largest motorcycle exhibition in China, CIMAmotor is sponsored by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), Chongqing Municipal Government, and Chinese motorcycle and scooter manufacturers. Half of the world’s motorcycles are produced in China, and Chongqing is China’s largest

Taiwan, and many other countries have confirmed they will attend the event, including Harley-Davidson, and for the first time Honda, which will have a 1,000 sq.m. stand. www.cimamotor.com

Motorcycle safety improves in UK, worsens in France NEW statistics released by the UK Government show that as the number of motorcycle miles travelled has increased in the country, the number of casualties and fatalities have fallen. Motorcycle traffic rose by 2% while casualties fell 4% in 2009 compared to 2008. The number reported as seriously injured fell by 4% to 5,350 and there were 472 motorcycle user fatalities in 2009, which was also 4% lower than during 2008. UK motorcycle industry association MCI said the Police BikeSafe scheme, intelligent enforcement, engineering improvements and the commitment

motorcycle production and export base, with its motorcycle products accounting for one third of the market share of the country. After eight years of continuous development, the organisers say CIMAMotor 2010 will be the most powerful event ever for the motorcycle industry in China. So far, overseas exhibitors from the USA, Japan, the UK, Spain,

from trainers to improve standards have all contributed to a safer motorcycling environment. Steve Kenward, CEO of the MCI, said, “although there is still a strong concern about the number of motorcycle casualties, the fact remains that year after year motorcycling continues to get safer in terms of the likelihood of having an accident.” Meanwhile, the French Transport Ministry said in June that 1,187 PTW riders were killed on French roads in 2009, a 9.3% increase on 2008, despite a large overall fall in road deaths across all other vehicle and

Both the UK and French governments are running ambitious PTW safety campaigns, but it seems the British have been more receptive to the central message than the French

pedestrian categories. The increase was 11.7% for the motorcycle subsegment. One small silver lining: the situation improved towards the end of 2009 and has shown an improvement so far in 2010, according to the ministry. www.mcia.co.uk www.securiteroutiere.gouv.fr

Honda envisages greater electric presence HONDA Japan has outlined the company’s future plans, which include increased development of electric PTWs, as well as bold moves to export new models to China. In his 2010 mid-year speech, company President and CEO Takanobu Ito said Honda will begin lease sales of the battery-powered EV-neo scooter to businesses and individual business owners in Japan later this year. Ito also said Honda will strive to improve

technology and reduce costs to make zero-emission machines available to a wider audience. The company is also collaborating with electromotive specialists to study the possibilities of solar-powered energy stations using thin-film solar cells manufactured by Honda Soltec for plug-and-charge systems which can be used by battery-powered bikes. It is planning to conduct testing and demonstration of the system first in The EV-neo electric scooter will be leased to Japanese business users in late 2010

Japan, with the US to follow. The company also plans to target China with electric and petrol-engined motorcycles next year, stating they will introduce a new zero-emission bike into China in 2011. Honda will also expand its annual motorcycle production capacity in Indonesia to 4 million units by building a new plant with a capacity of 500,000 units, which will become operational in the latter half of 2011. The expansion will see Honda’s annual motorcycle production capacity in Asia (excluding Japan) increase from approximately 16 million units to 18 million units by the end of 2011. www.world.honda.com

2010 FEMA International Motorcyclists Conference IN late June the Federation of European Motorcyclists’ Associations (FEMA) organised a new event with support from the European Commission that is set to become an important fixture on the international motorcycling calendar, the first International Motorcyclists Conference, which gathered over 230 powered two-wheeler (PTW) sector participants to the Autoworld conference centre in Brussels. The conference was piloted by FEMA in partnership with the Australian Motorcycle Council (AMC) and the Motorcyclists Confederation of Canada (MCC). Its objective was to open dialogue between PTW users, industry and government representatives from around the world to share experiences, ideas and best practice. Altogether the three motorcyclists’ organisations have almost 500,000

affiliated members. On the first day of the conference the European Commission officially launched the European Motorcyclists’ Forum, designed to provide a platform for EU PTW user groups to put their views directly to the research community and to European decision makers. This included a high-level round table on motorcycling in the 21st century, along with a session dedicated to safety and mobility, presenting the views of motorcyclists and transport policy makers, and addressing current developments within the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) field. Also featured during the conference was the user forum of 2BESAFE, currently the most wide-ranging and best funded research project on motorcyclists’ behaviour. In parallel, a workshop on road infrastructure Some 250 attendees from Europe, Australia, Canada and further afield attended the conference

improvements provided information on the latest developments in this crucial field. Reaction to the conference from attendees was upbeat, and the organisers said they would try to invite other organisations in future, for example the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), and US organisations such as AMA and MRF. To see individual presentations made at the Conference go to: www.femaonline.eu/index. php?page=conference-report Meanwhile, FEMA has made an initial response to the European Commission’s new 10-year Road Safety Action Program (RSAP), whose stated goals are to make roads safer and cut road deaths by half by 2020. The FEMA position statement supports voluntary, rather than mandatory ABS on new bikes, opposes any ban on customisation (which the RSAP calls ‘tampering’), objects to power limits for new vehicles, supports the widespread dissemination of repair and maintenance information (rather than restricting this information to OEM monopoly outlets), opposes periodic technical

The inference from this statement is that the Commission has ignored much of the motorcycle user groups’ input into the consultation process in favour of expensive sticking plaster solutions and an overly bureaucratic approach.

MV Agusta back in Italian hands N a deal announced on 6th August, current MV Agusta President Claudio Castiglioni, 65, and his son Giovanni, 29, have repurchased from HarleyDavidson 100% of the shares of MV Agusta Motor S.p.A. through their family holding company, and have thus re-acquired both the historic MV Agusta brand and the family Cagiva marque, which they had previously sold to Harley in July 2008 for E70million ($108 million). Part of this included repayment of existing bank debt of around E45million ($69million), and in addition, the agreement provided for a contingency payment to Claudio Castiglioni in 2016, understood to be $40million, if certain financial targets were met. Now, after the repurchase of the company, Castiglioni père will continue as President, with son Giovanni as CEO.The latter, a graduate of the London Business School who joined MV in 2002 as Director of Communication after working in the USA for a year, fulfilled this role parttime while running his own fashion business, now sidelined in favour of his new full-time responsibilities in charge of day-to-day operations for MV Agusta. Harley’s exit comes after making a further significant but undisclosed investment of around $60million in MV Agusta, devoted to cleaning up the balance sheet and underwriting development costs of the acclaimed two new models announced for 2010, the heavily revised F4 sportbike and 990R/1190R Brutale duo, as well as the forthcoming 675cc three-cylinder F3. Harley management, headed by newly-appointed President/CEO Keith Wandell, had announced on October 15 last year that, in the face of its own financial troubles brought about by the recession, the Motor Company was shutting down Buell and putting MV Agusta up for sale. “Our decision to divest MV Agusta reflects our strategy to focus our efforts and our

I

investment on the Harley-Davidson brand, as we believe this provides an optimal path to long-term growth,” said Wandell in announcing the sale of the Italian trophy brand back to the Castiglioni family for the undisclosed princely sum of E3 – or five bucks in Uncle Sam’s greenbacks! This reflects Wandell’s desire to draw a line under the whole MV experience while at the same time being seen to exit gracefully, re-entrusting control of what is arguably the world’s most prestigious motorcycle brand in the hands of the people whom the previous Harley President Jim Ziemer and his colleagues acquired it from, in what is now viewed in Milwaukee as a strategic error which Harley must pay for. Effectively, Harley-Davidson is calling things even with the Castiglioni family, who would have been entitled to that $40million contingency payment in the event that MV Agusta had been sold by Harley to another buyer – another reason for Wandell choosing to divest the company to them, and not another. For the Castiglionis were just one of five suitors shortlisted by Harley to acquire the company, with three Italian investment funds also in contention, as well as former Ducati President/CEO, Federico Minoli. MV Agusta 1098R, one of several models the nowindependent company is offering in its 2010 range

“I really never thought that I’d find myself in this position again,” said Claudio Castiglioni after signing the agreement.“But I was determined not to let MV Agusta fall into the hands of the sharks of the fund management community, who have no understanding of what a brand like this represents. This is a motorcycle company with a historic past and a glorious future, and it must be treated like a tree that’s about to bear fruit, not stripped of its branches in order to save costs.” So, no hard feelings about being forced to sell Ducati to TPG, then... “ M o r e o v e r, Harley-Davidson had the same viewpoint, which was how we were able to come to an agreement,” revealed Castiglioni. “They wanted MV Agusta to remain in the hands of people who care about the product, with the understanding of how to develop it. That’s us.” The three-euro purchase price – apparently connected with the number of cylinders in the engine powering the range of 675cc models which MV Agusta has under development for launch next year! – has one major contingency, in that Harley-Davidson is not only writing off all the big investment it’s spent on MV so far, as well as the purchase price, it’s also fronting up one half of a

Giovanni and Claudio Castiglioni

$40million development fund to get MV firing on all four cylinders once again, with the other $20million provided by the Castiglionis, underwritten by the Paris-based investment bank Lazard & Co. With MV Agusta producing a total of just 3,000 bikes in 2009, resulting in a E27million pre-tax loss during its first full year under Harley ownership from turnover of E34million, and on line to manufacture only 4,500 units in 2010 with an even higher E60million projected loss, breakeven point is reliably understood to be more than double that quantity for a company employing 250 people, with a significant proportion of the workforce in R&D. “We’re going to lay the basis for significant growth calmly and carefully over the next year or so,” says Claudio Castiglioni, who believes he has the solution to MV’s numbers problem on the horizon in the shape of its forthcoming entry into the middleweight segment. “The PIN number for MV Agusta’s future is F3,” he says. “Our new 675cc threecylinder sports model will revolutionise the marketplace, as well as set our company in the right direction in allowing us to compete in a volume production segment of the >>>

without sacrificing quality. It will cost around E1011,000 (the Triumph Daytona 675 sells in Italy for E11,590), so will be very competitively priced, and it’ll be launched in October 2011 with a Brutale version that’s also under development – we call it the Brutalina in-house, which isn’t maybe such a bad name! The F3 isn’t just ‘una bella figura’, a pretty face. It has literally groundbreaking performance for its category, and will establish a new benchmark for the Supersport class when it arrives.” MV is also examining

building an entry-level stripped version of the 990R Brutale, to make four-cylinder MV Agusta ownership more accessible to more customers, while the Cagiva brand will be relaunched in due course, most likely with the Mito 525 four-stroke single when finance and customer demand are there. Claudio Castiglioni has also enticed Massimo Bordi back to the motorcycle business to join him and his son at MV Agusta. Bordi, 62, worked for Ducati for 23 years, rising to Chief Engineer and General Manager, which included

a decade-long collaboration with Castiglioni, but left in 2000 when the company changed hands. “I’m thrilled to have completed this transaction,” said Claudio Castiglioni. “Having lived and breathed MV Agusta and its products for the past 15 years, and with the passion for its heritage as well as a certain understanding of its customers’ expectations, I’m happy to be in the position of taking the company forward once again. Thanks to HarleyDavidson’s support, MV Agusta is right now, more than at any time in its

glorious history, at the threshold of a golden age of product-driven commercial success. I believe that Giovanni and I are the right people to take it forward from here, and look forward to doing so.”

B&B R-Tech 250 for Moto3 in 2012 OLLOWING a decision taken by the Grand Prix Commission at the Dutch GP in Assen on June 26, it’s now been confirmed that the 125cc class, Grand Prix racing’s last remaining two-stroke category, will be replaced for the 2012 season by Moto3, catering for 250cc four-stroke singles with a maximum bore of 81mm, like the proposed Moto1 rules for 1000cc GP racing. However, unlike Moto2, the 600cc

four-cylinder four-stroke replacement for 250GP, which debuted this season with a sealed Honda control engine whose performance has been held down for reliability reasons, Moto3 will be a free engine formula even at GP level. This makes the new class set to become the backbone of entry-level motorcycle road racing all over the world, where with 125cc two-strokes now semi-extinct, there’s a major demand for such a category at Club, National and International level in many countries, delivering affordable and accessible performance from any one of a wide choice of engines. Honda is already known to be developing a 250cc four-stroke singlecylinder motor which has been fitted into a race RS125 chassis for initial testing at the Japanese GP’s Twin Ring Motegi circuit, where it’s rumoured to have already lapped 1.5sec faster than an RS125 GP two-stroke. There’s already a National domestic series in Japan for MX-based 250cc four-stroke singles fitted in a road racing chassis, and in the USA, promoter Gavin Trippe has been trying for three years to get a similar MX-derived F450 Super Singles category off the ground. That’s a view shared by Swiss engineer and racer Willi Rüfenacht,

The R-Tech 250 has shown promise in dyno testing and is soon to hit the racetrack

who together with partner Maurizio Bäumle has produced a dedicated allnew Moto3 engine under the B&B R-Tech label (www.bb-technology.ch). First displayed at the final round of the IDM German Superbike race series at Hockenheim last September, the R-Tech 250 has since shown promise in dyno testing, and is soon to hit the racetrack. While acquisition costs of the new engine – for which a price has yet to be set by B&B R-Tech - will be more expensive than the 125cc two-stroke it replaces, it’s claimed that running costs will be greatly reduced, with 15 hours of running time between major

engine rebuilds. Extensive dyno testing has so far delivered peak performance of 45bhp at 15,400rpm at the rear wheel (with 27bhp already available at just 7,700 revs, halfway to redline), compared to 38bhp at the wheel for the best of the late RS125 Hondas, but around the same as the factory RS125 Aprilias, which have a short shelf life. This beautifully constructed Moto3 engine is the one that seems likely to bring Rüfenacht commercial success, and it’s going to be interesting to see how many other specialist manufacturers for the class will join him in that particular shop window.

Venturi electric makeover for Voxan IT seems there may indeed be a kind of life after death for the French marque Voxan, which was finally shut down in March by the Clermont-Ferrand bankruptcy court after manufacturing a total of 1,838 motorcycles in the ten years up to December 2009. At the auction of the company’s remaining assets held on June 2, top bid for the Voxan trademark and intellectual property came from Monaco-based sportscar maker Venturi, acquired in 2001 by Monegasque property millionaire Gildo Pallanca Pastor, 43, whose family are among the most substantial landowners in Monte Carlo. Since acquiring Venturi, founded

in 1984 and previously best known for producing 700 examples of the Atlantique turbocharged V6 sports car which it raced successfully in the Le Mans 24 Hours, Pastor has focused the company 100% on the creation of a series of leading-edge electric vehicles produced at the company’s factory near Le Mans. These have included firstly the Fetish sports car, then the commercially successful Venturi e-powered version of the Citroen Berlingo delivery van, the Eclectic, and finally the Astrolab, claimed to be the world's first solar-electric hybrid car. These vehicles were styled for

Arrivederci Moto Morini? PAOLO Berlusconi, the younger brother of Italy’s current prime minister, who was negotiating to acquire Moto Morini, has now walked away from a potential deal after dithering by the metal workers union representing Moto Morini’s workforce. Berlusconi was interested in assembling a new line of his Garelli scooters at the Morini factory, as well as relaunching the existing 1200cc V-twin Morini bike range. However, following a cancellation without explanation by the union of a meeting planned for June 14 between Nuova Garelli and local union official Bruno Papignani, Berlusconi threw in the towel. Berlusconi – the only potential buyer to have expressed a formal interest in rescuing the company - had increased to 26 from 20 the number of jobs which would be retained out of

the 57 positions filled when Moto Morini entered the Italian equivalent of Chapter 11 bankruptcy last September. The resulting 31 redundancies were considered unacceptable by the union, which therefore appears to have effectively shut the company down, thus sacrificing those 26 jobs on offer! The historic Italian motorcycle company now looks like it will be left with no future at all, and the trade unions, there to protect workers, have effectively done them out of a job altogether. In issuing a statement on the matter, Nuova Garelli declared: “The meeting of June 14 was cancelled for incomprehensible reasons. Therefore, in light of obstacles from the trade unions, and the impossibility of reaching an agreement with them, Nuova Garelli feels it must put an end to this affair which could have

overtones of a soap opera, if not for seeing bankrupt Moto Morini workers at home, without jobs.” In consequence, Moto Morini was definitively shut down on July 7, and its assets will now be auctioned – including the company name and intellectual property. It’s understood that an Italo-Canadian company is interested in acquiring the remnants of

the marque, but the price to be paid will be considerably less than Paolo Berlusconi’s E2.9 million offer for a going concern. And in the event that the company is indeed born again, it will of course not have to guarantee the same number of jobs as if it had been restructured under the Italian equivalent of Chapter 11. Not for nothing was Bologna known for decades as La Città Rossa, the Red City, and as the heartland of the Italian Communist party…

BMW no.1 in German market, which is down by 10.4% in first six months of 2010 THE GERMAN motorcycle and scooter market saw 81,914 new units registered in the first half of 2010, down 10.4% on the 91,417 recorded in the same period of 2009, according to IVM, the country’s motorcycle industry association. On a month-by-month basis registrations were as follows: January 2,450 (–41.1%), February 4,543 (–52.8) and March 24,854 (+12.6), April 21,074 (–12%), May 14,538 (–11.7% ) and June 14,455 (–4.5% ). Registrations of motorcycles with engines larger than 125cc fell 7.4% to 55,716, while those of scooters with

engines over 125cc fell to 5,753, a 22.8% decline on the first six months of 2009. Within the larger motorcycle category, numbers registered per sector were as follows: sportsbikes fell 5% to 18,711, enduro fell 1% to 11,863, supersport fell 23.7% to 6,761, classic bikes fell 10% to 7,097, touring fell 22% to 3,005, while customs and choppers fell 1% to 7,326. Again, for larger motorcycles, the breakdown by engine size shows that most categories saw a decline: 126-249cc +11.9% to 1,124, 250499cc –3.1% to 1,574, 500-749cc

French registrations fall 8.7% FIRST half year registrations in France across all OEMs fell 8.7% to 109,819 vehicles compared to the same period of 2009, a slower rate of decline than in the previous year. “Because of the weather, sales were very bad in spring, but picked up in June. Traditionally the French market has high inertia, which dampens both upturns and downturns (contrary, for example, to the Spanish market). We should end the year around –10%, but still remain as the biggest market in Europe for pure motorcycles, although not for scooters,” said Didier Ganneau, editor of l’Officiel magazine. “What is sure is that the supersport category, as in

Britain, is collapsing, although it was never as large in France as it was in the UK,” he added. Best selling models over the period were the Yamaha 125 X-Max (4,912), Piaggio MP3 400 LT (4,052), Kawasaki Z750 (3,520), 650 ER6 (2,631), Yamaha 500 T-Max (2,256), 600 XJ6 (2,143), Peugeot 125 Satelis (2,066), Piaggio 125 X Evo (1,991), Yamaha YBR 125 (1,851) and Triumph 675 Street Triple (1,703). www.cotedelofficiel.fr

–17.7% to 53,555,750-999cc –38.4% to 15,610, 1000-1199cc +16% to 10,939, 1200-1399cc –8.4% to 6,271, 1400cc+ –2.9 to 5,469. BMW has finally overtaken Honda to take the number one position in the German sales chart, all the more impressive for the fact that the Bavarian-headquartered company only sells high value, larger displacement units. For the Japanese OEMs the retreat continues, with Suzuki suffering most, followed by Honda and then Yamaha, and then Kawasaki. The fall in scooter sales affected Piaggio, which saw a 20% drop in

registrations, despite the fact that MP3s and Vespas are still selling well, while Harley’s small drop underlines the continued popularity of choppers and cruisers. Triumph’s sales are now contracting after a positive performance last year and KTM is also shrinking, while Ducati saw a 14% improvement, the best performance after BMW.

UK registrations fall 15.9% THE latest statistics from Britain’s MCI trade association show that new registrations of motorcycles, scooters and mopeds in the UK fell by 15.9% to 52,501 in the first six months of 2010. Moped registrations (scooters and small bikes 50cc and under) saw a 15.6% decline over the same period of 2009, while the overall figure for PTWs over 50cc was down 15.9%. motorcycle segment of over 22.4%, with a total of 73,493 units sold, while moped sales fell by 17% to 16,103 units. Sources at ANESDOR believe that the fall in moped sales is linked to the government’s decision to raise the minimum rider age for this type of vehicle to 15. The quad sector saw a fall over the period of 7.28% to 2,140. www.anesdor.com

10.2% to 13,622, 126-650cc 23.2% to 8,694 and 651-1000cc 29.5% to 11,641. The six months were pretty dismal for most manufacturers, with the exception of Triumph and BMW, which are both pushing up the rankings and threatening to topple Suzuki from third place. Triumph’s popular Street Triple is one of the reasons for the Hinckley-based company’s success, while BMW’s R1200 RT and GS were the most popular touring and adventure models in the UK over the six-month period.

Ya m a h a has taken the top position from Honda mainly due to the relative success of its 125cc motorcycle and scooter range, but like the other Japanese OEMs, is also seeing sales shrink at a rapid rate. Piaggio, Harley-Davidson and Aprilia also saw falls of between 20% and 30%, with the tenth position in the national sales league disputed between Ducati and KTM. www.mcia.co.uk

Surflex clutch disc kit for Hypermotard

LeoVince Scoot expansion chamber for Peugeot SpeedFight 3

THIS new clutch disc kit for the Ducati Hypermotard 1100, 1100 Evo, Evo SP, and 1198 S models is interchangeable with the original set and optimises the bike’s performance, Surflex says, fully transmitting all power from the engine without losing fluidity and modulation capacity.

THE new LeoVince Scoot ZX-R exhaust for the Peugeot SpeedFight 3 (2009-2010) has a large-size stainless steel body silencer with enlarged exit pipe, covered in carbon fibre and attached with an aluminium clamp. The expansion chamber body is made of special 10/10 mm steel, featuring an “open” doublechamber structure covered with deadening material and the cones (up to a maximum of 9) are TIG handwelded. When construction has been completed, a transparent varnish is applied that protects the expansion chamber from the elements, whilst at the same time enhancing its racing design by leaving all the welding visible. The ZX-R kit also contains a set of springs and rollers to boost the variator performance according to the particular features of the exhaust and engine for which it has been developed. The expansion chamber is CE marked and can be used on the open road.

The kit includes eight trimmed discs with metal die-cast aluminium support and ten steel discs. The carbon coating of the friction discs is designed to work with the powerful engine of the Hypermotard, with excellent temperature resistance and long use without losing efficiency. ECON EH 400 and 600 lifts ECON EH 400 and 600 lifts are made in Germany and have a maximum load of 400kg and 600kg respectively. They have a number of unique features, the company says, which give high-speed operation and long-term reliability. Operational height extends from only 160mm to 1,200 mm and the electro-hydraulic drive system complies with the latest EU directives. It is equipped with a safety valve, located directly on the hydraulic piston (40-45 mm for optimum robustness). The unit is controlled by a magnetic hand switch, and the long silicon power cables provide for a comfortable working environment. A large wheel piece at the rear of the lift can be pushed through under the lift, which allows for easy and quick wheel changes. The electrical drive system is completely covered with a steel plate and located under the lift. Another key feature is the ramp, which draws itself in under the lift frame when the lift is

being raised. The 400 kg lift has the same base and stable diagonal supports as the 600 kg lift, which guarantees good functionality and stability. Econ says the EH lift series combines great workmanship and functionality at a very keen price point. They are available in two standard colours (red/silver or blue/silver), with other colours available on request. The company is seeking distributors and will be present at INTERMOT in Hall 8.1. d3o Viper Stealth and Viper Pro back protectors FOLLOWING 18 months of research, design and development, d3o has launched the Viper range of back protectors incorporating d3o’s patented shock-absorbent material and new Air Wave technology. d3o says the Air Wave technology used in the Viper range is a breakthrough in design that allows for 3-dimensional flexibility for comfort without loss of protective performance. Multi-channel Wave geometry spans the protector promoting natural flexibility through both the x and y axis, without deformation, restriction or creasing. The result is a true ergonomic protector that is harmonious with the body’s movement, whilst maintaining constant protection. The waves also encourage

laminar airflow between the back protector and the rider, creating minimal contact with the body and so reducing the chance of moisture retention. Innovative features of the range include activation speed – the airbag inflates fully in 80 milliseconds – as well as new and more efficient fluid dynamics.Activation is via an innovative trigger, which is located to the rear of the jacket on one side and operated by a Sabelt inertia reel mechanism. The inflation rate of the airbag is around three times faster than

comparable products. Brembo R&D design engineers have also minimised the dimensions of the airbag and trigger, to the point that the safety system built into these new jackets is hardly noticeable. All models are exceptionally lightweight, even with the airbag system incorporated. The lightest jacket of the range weighs little more than 1 kg, and the heaviest, less than 1.5 kg. All innovations are protected by patents either granted or pending. The Brembo Life Jacket range has three models for men and two for women, offered in black, white, blue, red, silver grey and sand mélange. The fabric is Oxford nylon with a Teflon core. All models are enhanced by careful attention to detail, typified by the adoption of ultra tough waterproof zips, with a flatlock fastener that ensures the jacket will not burst open even under stress.

Brembo Life Jackets are styled, manufactured and marketed under worldwide exclusive license by the Cionti fashion house, with French company Helite involved in development and production of the airbag system and Brembo passive safety subsidiary Sabelt responsible for the inertia reel. The University of Florence Department of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Technologies conducted an objective assessment of the Brembo airbag device and its effectiveness in mitigating injury to motorcyclists. The assessment was carried out using numerical models able to simulate the behaviour of crash test dummies and of vehicles involved in the accident scenarios studied. The numerical models examined had been validated experimentally in the context of earlier studies.

From end-November 2010, the entire collection will be available at selected fashion stores and motorcycle outfitters worldwide, and purchasable online from a dedicated e-commerce site. Like all safety products, the airbag system can be checked and tested at an authorised service centre. Axo 2011 MX combo THE 2011 Sport jersey is designed to fit under or over roost guards and provide unrestricted freedom of movement. The 100% lightweight polyester construction resists stains and odours and is completely machine washable, and the fully sublimated graphics are colour fast and resist fading. The unique and new for 2011 neck pattern will not ride up into the neck causing discomfort, and a longer tail panel helps the jersey to stay tucked in the pant. The back panel features a graphic large and open enough to accept all AMA and FIM required numbering and lettering. The Apple version is provided with a large side mesh area. The all new 2011 Nickel pants include features and construction once reserved for only the most expensive pants, the company says. By combining 600 denier Nylon thigh panels with punched Nylon blended thigh and crotch panels, the shell is comfortable and supportive. Unique stretch panels wrap the upper thigh, waist and inner thigh, while the company’s own slip fitting knee and thigh

pattern suspends the thigh from the knee allowing the knee panel to operate independently from the leg of the pants. A vented thigh TPR panel allows cooling air to circulate, while leather inner knee panels reduce heat and increase resistance, and 1000 Denier Cordura is layered over the rear of the pants. The 2011 AXO Padlock glove uses Nash Clarino on the palm and finger tips with a top wrist closure, while 4-way stretch Spandex is used on the cuff with a Slip Fit™knuckle pocket. The sonic welded TPR flexes over the knuckles and is welded to a vented Airprene panel. The fingers are covered with colour-fast breathable sublimated PolyNylon. Short, non-restrictive Lycra constructed finger fourchettes are combined with a “Hour Glass” shaped palm side finger for complete freedom of flex.

Founded in California in 1956, Premier Helmets lays claim to being the first manufacturer to produce a full-face helmet. Thanks to the interest of seven-times World Champion Phil Read, the ‘Prince of Speed’, Premier moved to Britain and then to Italy in 1987, where production has been based ever since the purchase of the brand by Vicenzo Madeo. ODAY, Premier helmets are seen in all the major motorcycle race series, used by top riders in national and international championships. The brand, which celebrates its 50th anniversary next year, has kept ahead because of a constant focus on design, comfort and safety. The company is based at Gallicano, near Lucca in Tuscany, where it has 3,200 sq.m. of production plant, offices and warehouse. All Premier helmets are made at the plant, and production is covered by quality certificate BS EN ISO 9001-2000. Other than manufacturing, all product research and development, design, management, quality, logistic, commercial, marketing, customer care and aftersales activities are also centred on the site. The creation of new models, innovative design, together with state-of-the-art safety technology, are the most important aspects of the Premier Helmet business, according to current CEO Luca Madeo, Vicenzo’s son. “Alongside our continuing investment in human and technical resources and dynamic marketing, this is what will carry the brand forward into the future.” Madeo says the time is right for European manufacturers of quality products to take the battle to Far Eastern producers.“Our research shows that increasingly the trend in our segment of the market is towards high

quality products that are well-supported, and away from cheap Chinese products.” he combination of Italian manufacture and style alongside top-level production technology is highly appreciated in the market, he adds, and is an important part of Premier’s ongoing success. “In the production department there is a certified laboratory to check all the design and development stages of every prototype, after which they undergo static and dynamic testing to ensure they will meet homologation requirements all over the world, from EC 22-05 to DOT and Snell.” says Madeo. “The repeated quality checks during production and the final safety testing are expensive, but are crucial in ensuring the helmets will always give top level protection. “Once we have the homologation, we start serial production, and the internal laboratory guarantees all the checks on the materials, the product and the production through random destructive tests on every single component of the helmet. “For this reason,in the Research and Development department, traditional manual skills are found sideby-side with the latest computer technology. All the processes are coordinated by specialists, with the ultimate result the best combination of comfort, performance, safety and design.” he materials used in Premier’s helmets are often exclusive to the company and at the apex of modern technology: Dyneema, Vectran, carbon, titanium and epoxidic resins for the external shell; Lexan OQ from General Electric for visors with antifog and anti-scratch treatments; and special anti-allergenic technical fabrics for the internal linings such as Shalimar microfibre, which has an exceptionally high level of absorbancy. The company’s ongoing research programme gave rise to its unique composite shell technology, products such as TVA (Titanium/Vectran/Aramidic) and TVC (Titanium/ Vectran/Carbon), which provide maximum safety with minimum weight, for example only 1.19kg for the latest Dragon Titanium full-face helmet. Premier’s production cycle, from the receipt of raw materials to final checks and packaging of the finished product, is carried out using a special

internally-developed process using constant reevaluation to improve efficiency. “In this way we can ensure the evolution of production technologies, a good level of customer service and the maintenance of quality standards,” says Madeo. Before assembly, every component is carefully checked with special machines that make the component move as it is supposed to in normal use, to detect any problem at an early stage. remier has 12 of the latest bag moulding machines in its production department. “To mould the shells the best fabrics and the best resins are needed”, Madeo says, “but most of all, a lot of experience”. The machines heat the moulds and amalgamate the fibres with the resin, but the operator has to position the fabric by hand (cut and prepared beforehand and in a different way for every model of shell) and distribute the resin inside the mould. The moulding process is affected by weather conditions and is dependent on temperature and air humidity, requiring the moulding specialist to vary the catalysis of the resin, the temperature of the moulds and the moulding time. Also, every helmet type has a different shell and every mould has different characteristics. “It’s not a simple job”, Madeo says.

P

After the moulding the shells pass to the cutting department before painting. Once the decorative motifs have been positioned, the shells are covered with several layers of transparent protective varnish and as soon as the varnish is dry, they are transferred to the assembly line.In this department, specialists fix the air vents to the shell, the fin stabiliser, the mechanism that regulates the movement of the visor and the retention strap. Subsequently they insert the high absorption differentiated density polystyrene inner shells. Finally, the removable interior lining is inserted and the visor is fixed and regulated. The painting process, ventilation system, lateral visor mechanisms, and all the other components are the result of specific functional and ergonomic studies. As might be expected, the main market for Premier is in Italy, with 60% of total sales, with the rest exported. Particular attention is given to different markets’ requirements and specific product demands in separate countries, Madeo says. n Europe, the company has distributors in Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, the Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland. In the Far East, there is representation in Taiwan,South Korea,Japan,Hong Kong and Thailand, while elsewhere, Premier also has distributors in Chile and Qatar. The company also sells spare parts, usually for harder to find older models, via the internet, as well as to countries where it has no representation. “We introduce new designs every year, and new products every two years. In 2010 our best-selling model was the top range Dragon, followed by our open face models JT3 and City Fly.” The most recent models are Vintage and Angel, the first an open face helmet that takes inspiration from 70s’ models, the second a touring full face helmet equipped with an internal dark sun visor. “We identify market needs through market research, distributors’ and agents’ advice and through data analysis,” says Madeo.“This gives us important market intelligence, for example we recently introduced four very light, super-ventilated models, which have been extremely well received by the urban rider.” hen asked what differentiates the company from its competitors, Madeo cites the development of its latest composite shells. “Our experience of exotic raw materials and our extensive know-how make our products unique in the world. Just an example of what we can do with our technologies is Dragon Titanium. The external shell of this model is made from the patented TVC (Titanium/Vectran/Carbon) composite. This product was developed for the aerospace industry by Alenia Aeronautica, part of the Finmeccanica industrial combine, which granted Premier the exclusive right for two years to use it in the manufacture of helmets.” The TVC mix offers extreme lightness, thanks

Premier Helmets’ 3,200 sq.m. plant at Gallicano in Tuscany includes offices, warehouse and a production facility where all the brand’s helmet lines are made

mainly to the titanium fibre, which is as hard as steel but 45% lighter. Premier says TVC is the most advanced composite available on the market today, with tests showing the Dragon Titanium at least 15% safer than comparable tri-composite fibre helmets. With its multi-density EPS inner shell, it provides the optimum balance between resistance and shock absorption in an impact, according to the company. “You must constantly keep up to date with the fibres and resins to produce ever lighter and more resistant shells,” Madeo says. “When we found out about TVC we looked into the possibility of using it for our production. We had to work for a few months with our suppliers of epoxy resins, but we finally found one that guarantees us the best cohesion with

titanium fibre, as has been confirmed by our laboratory tests.” Also key to the Premier Helmets offer is the company’s quality policy. This involves continuous monitoring of the quality and prices of raw materials and components, ongoing research for technologically advanced components, monitoring of the after-sales services offered by authorised dealers and distributors, and direct feedback channels from customers and potential customers to managers via the company’s website. The Madeo family’s other helmet operations are also based in the Gallicano plant. These include the M.Roberts middle-market motorcycle helmet brand, and protective headgear for the military and police. remier’s racing pedigree is also an important part of its appeal. Since the days of Phil Read, champions such as Pier Francesco Chili, David Vuillemin, Kurt Nicol, Dirk Raudies, Edgar Torrontores, Bob Moore and Fabrizio Meoni have worn Premier helmets, and have provided essential feedback to the company’s R&D team. “All Premier technical developments are tested in collaboration with our professional riders. Races are the best test for the helmets, where our specialised technicians from the Racing Service have the double task of providing technical assistance and at the same time using the precious information from the race to improve new helmets going into series production,” says Madeo. “At the moment our riders Andrew Pitt and Ruben Xaus are trying out new materials, and if approved, these will be incorporated into our helmets next year.” For the future, the Premier CEO sees the company continuing to renew its product lines with innovative helmets that use the best available new technologies. “We will provide continuous improvement in products and advance our market knowledge, focusing on our customers’ needs and paying attention to the evolution of our customers’ knowledge,” he says. “This is Premier and these are its winning characteristics.”

Yamaha Motor Corp. is forecasting a 20% drop in its PTW sales in Europe and North America in 2010. The figure, released in July by CEO Hiroyuki Yanagi, doubles the company's original forecast of 10%. The company plans to shed 1,000 jobs worldwide in 2010, after 1,100 in 2009. Nevertheless, Mr Yanagi said the company was expecting to break even in 2010 thanks to a 14 per cent growth in the Asian market. The MF Colour Bender folding back protector from Soul Race, designed by Franzan Design, has been chosen as one of the contenders for the 2010 Good Design Expo Awards in Tokyo. Mahindra of India, already an established manufacturer of cars, scooters, 4x4s and tractors, will introduce a motorcycle range designed by Engines Engineering of Italy. As well as focusing on the home market,Mahindra says it is also planning to target Latin America,Africa and South Asia with the range. Peugeot Scooters has just launched in China through its joint venture with Qingqi Motorcycles, with a five-model line-up comprising three scooters and two motorcycles from 80 to 125cc to be built at the JV’s Jinan plant. The Peugeot sales network in China will number 145 outlets and nine flagship stores, across nine provinces.

THE seventh international INTERMOT Motorcycle,Scooter and Bicycle Fair will be held at Cologne in Germany from October 6th to 10th, 2010, in halls 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 of the Kölnmesse exhibition centre. Aiming to provide comprehensive coverage of the motorcycle, scooter and bicycle sectors, organisers IVM, the German motorcycle association, claim it will be the most important powered twowheeler show anywhere in the world this year. As well as showcasing for the first time the full range of products from IFMA, Germany’s former leading bicycle trade fair,INTERMOT 2010 will also focus on Light Electric Vehicles (LEVs). Special features will once again include a Tourism Centre highlighting motorcycle travel opportunities all over the world as well as the latest touring equipment, while the Cologne Custom Championship, a custom show run in cooperation with IVM and American Motorcycle Dealer (AMD) magazine, will display a wide range of the most original café racer, chopper, cruiser, streetfighter, scooter and sportsbike custom-builds. The overall winner will be entered for the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building in Sturgis, South Dakota, next year. The popular Workshop Centre will also return, with specialists from the German Vehicle Academy demonstrating modern motorcycle workshop best practice on more than 160 square metres of space in Hall 8.1. In live demonstrations, trade visitors can attend

modules on electrical and electronic fault diagnosis, performance testing for ebikes, customising, engine and motor technology and the service and maintenance of e-bikes. Work on the motorcycles will be carried out using tools and diagnostic equipment that the Vehicle Academy uses in its daily work, which means that trade visitors can obtain impartial recommendations about workshop equipment. In addition to the demonstrations, the experts from the Vehicle Academy will also be available for personal discussions. A meeting area is available for this specific purpose. Other activities include a motorcyclethemed photography competition that will be judged after the show. Throughout the exhibition a full programme of racing, stunts and demos will take place in the events arena and on the many outside tracks, while on Saturday what is billed as the world’s biggest freestyle motocross spectacle, the Night of the Jumps, is scheduled for the Lanxess arena nearby. Opening times for exhibitors are 0800 hrs to 1900 hrs, except on 8 October until 2100 hrs, and for visitors 0900 hrs to 1800 hrs, except on 8 October until 2000 hrs. In 2008 INTERMOT had 1,052 exhibitors from 36 countries, total exhibition and activity space of 120,000 sq.m.and 193,000 visitors, a 3% increase on the 2006 show.
