Record number of pre-entered bikes slated for 8th annual AMD World Championship T the end of May, a record number of entries had been received for this year’s 8th annual AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building. Being staged at its customary Lazell/3rd site in downtown Sturgis from August 7 through 10, some 65 bikes were already confirmed for the event’s four classes with 10 weeks still to go. In addition to the now world famous ‘FreeStyle’ Class, this year sees revised class definitions for Modified Harley-Davidson motorcycles (sponsored by Harley-Davidson and designed to throw the focus on customisation using stock frame geometry) and the introduction of a new ‘Performance Custom’ Class to showcase bikes of all platforms where the custom work is primarily of a performance nature. This class includes strip and circuit race bikes, bikes bound for the Bonneville Salt Flats and street performance work. The fourth class is the ‘Production Manufacturer Class’ for stock or customised bikes that either already are in volume

production, or where the design and engineering values have been developed with productionization in mind. Hosted for the second year by Harley-Davidson at their newly located Sturgis Motorcycle Rally headquarters, this year’s ‘World Champs’ will be the culmination of a worldwide affiliate event program that, for the first time, has included the ‘Ultimate Builder’ custom bike shows that were staged at last winter’s 11 city Progressive International Motorcycle Show series. Featuring a United States Championship finale at Daytona Bike Week, the ‘Ultimate Builder’ shows brings the total number of affiliate and Championship program events to over 30 in some 20 different countries – events that between them attract a total rider and consumer audience of over 2m enthusiasts, in markets with some 70m road going motorcycles. World Championship judging is by ‘peer group review’ with past and present competitors and selected industry experts voting for the bikes they think are the pick of the crop at each year’s finals. So far World

Champions have come from Canada (Roger Goldammer, a three-time winner), Japan (Chicara Nagata), Sweden (Stellan Egeland), The United States (Dave Cook from Milwaukee, Wi.) and reigning World Champion Freddie ‘Krugger’ Bertrand from Belgium. Among this year’s competitors will be reigning Modified Harley-Davidson World Champion Shaw HarleyDavidson from the UK, who are returning to the finals this year to defend their title. Set-up for this year’s World Champs, with registration of all competing bikes, is on Saturday August 6th, while the awards ceremony at which the new World Champion will be announced will be live on the internet at 3:00pm MST on Wednesday August 10th. All AMD Magazine readers who are attending this year’s Sturgis Rally (past and present competitors, all dealers and customizers and all vendor personnel) are welcome at the annual ‘Partner Night’ Industry VIP Party at the World Champs facility from 7:30 pm on Sunday August 7th.

Bryan Schimke is a former motocross racer turned custom builder and his past race bikes heavily influenced his latest build – Consuela. The blend of custom and motocross styling took the bike to a top 15 placing at the 2011 World Championship. Full story page 60
